Group seeks support in lobbying governments
The debate over prayer in the
;public school system is continuing
this week as the Canadian Bible So-
ciety calls on Christians to lobby the
government for the inclusion of the
Lord's Prayer and Bible readings in
Canada's public schools.
In an open letter to religious
leaders throughout the country
Tuesday, Reverend Greg Bailey, the
society's national director, de-
nounced last week's ruling of a
.
Saskatchewan Human Rights Tri -
burial that prohibited the daily
recital of the Lord's Prayer in
:Saskatoon's public schools.
Mr. Bailey maintains banning
the reading of the Bible in public
schools could "further reduce the
possibility of exposure to higher
ideals, such as the quality of love,
mercy, the Golden Rule and the Ten
Commandments.'
The Saskatchewan ruling comes
at a time when the Durham District
School Board is planning to begin
each school day with "a spiritual en-
couragement; a positive thought for
the day; a scripture passage or
prayer for the students' well-being"
as part of the daily morning exercis-
es in every school here.
Ajax trustee Brian Clarke, who
voted in favour of the motion to ad-
dress students' spiritual needs at
school, grew up reciting the Lord's
Prayer in school and `liked" doing
so. But, he admits he "could see (the

But, according to Mr. Bailey, the
Lord's Prayer, which was banned
from Ontario's schools in 1988,
should be allowed if the majority
calls for it.
In his letter, he urges "all con-
cerned Christians to join us in con-
tacting government officials with a
view to enshrining the right for pub-
lic schools throughout Canada to
use the Lord's Prayer and Bible
readings wherever a majority Chris-
tian population exists."

PICKERING —A waste trans-
fer facility here could be permitted
to accept almost 440,000 tonnes of
garbage a year, outraging some who
believe it could open the door to
new garbage woes.
"We've been there, done that:'
Local Ward I Councillor Dave
Ryan said at Tuesday's council
meeting in response to a motion to
prepare a 'host benefit agreement'
with Miller Waste Durham Inc. that
would see an expansion of its
Squirts Beach Road facility.
"I think it's disgraceful:' argued
Coun. Ryan, the only councillor to
oppose the motion.
But others believe the agreement
will paint a much brighter picture
for the municipality that successful-
ly fought to close the Brock West
landfill site just a few years ago.
"In the bad old days of Brock
West, (garbage) was deposited
there ... and is still there:' noted
Local Ward 3 Coun. David Pickles.
This garbage, on the other hand, "is
coming in and going out again"
Currently, the site operates as a
waste transfer and processing facili-
ty for solid non -hazardous industri-
al, commercial and institutional
(ICI) and domestic waste from
across Ontario, with Pickering and
Ajax residential and Durham Re-
gion recyclables among its top cus-
tomers, notes director of public
works Richard Holborn.
The maximum volume of mater-
ial the can now be received is 299
tonnes per day and on-site storage is
a maximum of 780 tonnes per day.
If Phase I plans are approved by the
Ministry of the Environment, those
amounts would increase to 1,020
tonnes per day and on-site storage
of 1,185 tonnes at any given time.

An Ajax nurse accused of sexually
assaulting a female patient showed no
signs of sexual arousal while per-
forming an internal exam on the teen,
court has heard.
Paul So, 36, has pleaded not guilty
to charges of sexually assaulting and
exploiting a 17 -year-old psychiatric
ward patient at the Ajax -Pickering
Health Centre.
The young woman, now 19, says
she was violated Jan. 31, 1998 during
an examination Mr. So performed
after she had complained about men-
strual pains.
She has testified Mr. So took her
into an examination room in the men-
tal health unit, told her to remove her
shirt and checked her breathing with
a stethoscope.
After, Mr. So offered to perform
an internal examination and the
teenager agreed, court has heard.
Mr. So had her to remove her pants
and underwear and lay on the exami-
nation stretcher, the teen said.
The exam lasted about 10 seconds
and she said she later felt "shocked"
and "unsettled" by the experience.
Court has heard the teen was ad-
mitted five days earlier with severe
depression, complaining of a voice in
her head repeatedly telling her, "It's
bad, no good.
On Wednesday, during a lengthy
cross-examination, defence lawyer
Todd Ducharme asked whether the
voice in her head planted the thought

Mr. So's exam was "bad"
She replied, "No, I just thought
(the exam) was very odd, that it was-
n't done right. Everything seemed
strange"
She said it didn't feel like a "nor-
mal" internal exam in that there were
no stirrups on the bed, no special
lamp, no medical instruments used
and no female personnel present dur-
ing the procedure.
Mr. So does not deny performing
the exam and it's the position of the
defence it was medically justified.
The former patient was also ques-
tioned by Mr. Ducharme about Mr.
So's demeanor during the internal
part of the examination.
"He was not flush? You didn't no-
tice if he was breathing heavy? His
face wasn't sweaty? His glasses did-
n't fog up'? There was no indication
from what you saw of Mr. So he was
sexually aroused?" he said.
The witness agreed with the
lawyer's conclusion.
On several occasions during cross-
examination, the teen broke down
crying when asked by Mr_ Ducharme
to recount explicit details of the ex-
amination.
"There are parts, sir, that I can't
remember," she said, prompting Mr.
Ducharme to reply, "You'd agree
there arc lots of parts you can't re-
member."

prize.
Nahid Westberg won the $250,000
Encore prize in the July 31 Lotto 6/49
draw and collected her earnings on
Tuesday. Aug. 3.
While living in Winnipeg, Ms.
Westberg won $50,000 in 1981 play-
ing a provincial lottery.
She plans to pay bills with her lat-
est winnings.
Ms. Westberg checked her num-
bers at 1 am. on Sunday, Aug. 1, but
didn't know how much she won until
later that day.

So in a victim impact statement —
and money. A $200,000 lawsuit has
been filed against Mr. So and the hos-
pital.
"I don't feel extreme hate... It
would be better to describe it as dis-
appointment and anger," she said.
Mr. Ducharme questioned the for-
mer patient about whose idea it was
to file a civil lawsuit in the case.
"I'm not exactly sure how that
came about... I didn't come out and
say 'let's sue the clothes off the
guy'," she said.
"You'd agree you could certainly
use $200,000.." suggested Mr.
Ducharme, prompting the young
woman to reply she didn't need the
money, "I'm comfortable."
The trial is being held in front of
Judge Norm Edmondson in the On-
tario Court of Justice, Oshawa.

Good news for young
people in Durham
The next decade likely to present
plenty of employment opportunities

grow up to be teachers, or nurses, or
firefighters, construction workers,
even professors.
According to a report released
Thursday by the Vancouver -based
Urban Futures Institute, the future
looks bright for Generation Y —
those in high school or university
right now.
The study indicates there will be
plenty of jobs to fill in the above-
named professions as today's baby
boomers, those born between 1946-
60 begin to retire early in the next
century.
Canadians will be retiring in
greater numbers than ever before
with 225,000 calling it quits next
year.
That number rises to 265,000 by
2(x)4, to 320.000 by 2005 all the way
up to 425.000 a year between 2020
and 2029 when the last of the
boomers collects his or her last pay-
cheque.
Into that void will go the young-
sters of today and they'll have loads
of employment choices and great
prospects.
Nurses and teachers, none too
happy with the way they've been
treated recently, will be leaving in
vast numbers and the need to replace
them is critical.
The average age of today's On-
tario teacher is 46, so many will he
leaving the profession over the next
decade.
The study also says unemploy-
ment in Canada, currently in the
eight to nine per cent range, will
drop to three per cent by 20X9 and.
get this, will be zero per cent by
2014.
Heady days arc near indeed.
Young people often hear doom -
and -gloom future predictions but
this is one they can get excited over.
Even if the rosy predictions by
the Urban Futures Institute come up
slightly short, the numbers indicate
there will still be plenty of opportu-
nity for our young people.
The jobs will be there. The mes-
sage to today's teens is to take ad-
vantage of opportunities their par-
ents would have died for.

has surfaced once again. Every
time the price of gas goes up, the
backbencher who has no support
from his party gets his mug in
every newspaper. Mr. McTeague
should be happy when the price
goes up. If it wasn't for the mo -

Short story contest interesting exerence
We were overwhelmed by the imagination of budding authors
Congratulations and a nod of
thanks are due all around.
I extend my congratulations to the
300 or so short story authors in
Durham Region who took part in our
first-ever contest. Sorting through
them was quite a task for myself and
colleagues in Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa,
Port Perry and Clarington.
Of the many I had the pleasure of
reading, I can say without reservation
that we have a talented and imagina-
tive collection of citizens in Durham
Region. Their stories were funny,
dark, deep and, in some cases, inspir-
ing.
But the toughest task was given to
that of our distinguished panel of
judges who had to actually pick the
winners. For their efforts, I'm grate-
ful.
Ruth Walker, Rabindranath Ma-
haraj and Bill Swan — published
writers all — provided the expert per-
spective on choosing the winners. I
didn't envy them their task, but I'll al-
ways be in awe of the job they did.
Ruth Walker, it must be said, is
kind and funny and wonderfully per -

sonable. Ruth was one of the first peo-
ple I called to discuss the short story
project. Ruth being Ruth, she accept-
ed immediately with the kind of ener-
gy and passion I've come to know.
It was Ruth Walker who convinced
me — me? — to visit members of the
Writers' Circle of Durham Region last
year to discuss newspaper work and
the ragged, often unrewarding world
of freelance writing. It was Ruth's
presence which comforted me at that
session, even as I stammered through
my presentation.
So, to repay her, I asked her to take
on his huge project. Ruth, of course,
cheerfully accepted.
I don't know the other judges as
well, but their reputations precede
..,r....
them. Bill Swan ran the journalism
program at Durham College for years
and retired to, I'm sure, a much more
lucrative calling as a children's book
author. Rabindranath Maharaj is
known to me only by his critically ac-
claimed work written in his unique
voice.
Each of them deserves a nod of
thanks.
Thanks also to my colleagues who
joined to help read through the hun-
dreds of submissions. Without their
collective efforts, I'd still be working
my way through the pile.
It was an interesting, time-consum-
ing but ultimately rewarding experi-
ence for me. I hope you've enjoyed
the winning stories published in re-
cent editions of the News Advertiser.
In the meantime, keep your pens
poised.

The Liberals in Ottawa have
never been interested in giving
the people a break. The books
arc being balanced on the backs
of the people. When the price of
gas jumps up, so does the
amount of tax collected for the
govcrnmcnt(s).
I have always believed
strongly in the provincial Con-
servatives. While they plan to
jump into this mess, the federal
government will not work with
the provinces on health care. I I
-cannot see them working togeth- {
er on this mess.
Telecommunications were
deregulated and competition has
lowered prices. Maybe we
should be looking into the same
kind of structure for the oil gi-
ants.
If this were to take place we
might not get to hear from Mr.
McTeague ever again. 'Chat
would make it a happy day in
Pleasantville for me.

drum St., the smell of
bleach, and the sight of women
with flabby upper arms lugging
large tubs of wet washing, was fa-
miliar to Katie. Often she earned
extra money helping the tired
women home from the 'washie.'
Tonight, would be different, she'd
dared to go up the steep flight of
wooden stairs, at number 44, to
the public bath house.
As Katie watched her mother
heat kettles of water to fill the gal-
vanized bathtub, she wished her
mother would say, "och just stay
and have your bath here the nicht.
Ye can go tae Caldrum Street next
week."
Katie yearned to hang on to the
cozy feelings of bathing by the
fireside; but her own sense of
modesty was beginning to signal
the end of the Friday night fire-
side routine. Her father's strongly
expressed opinion voiced a few
weeks earlier reflected her
thoughts.
"It's high time you went to
Caldrum Street for your bath
,Katie.- he had said, just before
leaving for his Friday Oddfel-
low's meeting.
Katie was envious of her broth-
er and sister's time at home, with
their mother, while she ventured
off on her own. It vexed her that
once again she was paving the
way for her younger siblings. This
was the price she was paying for
being 1 I years old, and the oldest.
"Cheerio," came the chorus of
voices as Katie left.
"Hurry Hame, I'll hae yer
nichtgoon warm for ye" said her
mother.
This show of tenderness
brought Katie close to tears. She
felt sorry for herself going out in
the damp evening air. She could
hear her Granny's voice saying,
'you're afraid of the death you'll
never dee,' as she walked up
James Street on her way to the
bath house.

Katie pulled the large wrought -
iron handle on the oversized

of the familiar routine of the wash
house.
With ticket money clenched in
her hand Katie joined the queue at
'the wicket. The smell of jute was
strong as Katie stood behind a
mill worker whose hair and cardi-
gan were dusted with specks of
jute. Ahead of the woman was a
man in navy blue dungarees with
a folding ruler tucked in his side
pocket, and a whittled down pen-
cil sandwiched behind his ear.
Katie listened intently, as each
spoke in the broadest Dundee

The Bath
House

a married mother of two and grandmother of four. A retired early
childhood educator, she now fulfills creative writing and story-
telling interests by participating in 'Writing for Children' work -

she said, as she took his money.
"I ken, the foreman asked me
to feenish a job before I left" he
moaned.
"Braw day, wis it!" said the
mill worker, when it was her turn.
"Eh, but it was cald" replied
the ticket woman.
Each left with a red ticket, and
headed for the steep wooden stair-
case.
Katic stared in their direc-
tion and watched as they
began to climb the stair-
case, but after four or five steps
they were out of sight, only
stomping sounds traced their as-
cent.
With a cigarette in her mouth,
the woman behind the window
mumbled to Katie, "Do you want
a ticket?"
"One please," shouted Katie,
as she stood on her toes to speak
through the opening in the glass.
"I'm no deef," barked the
woman, as she shoved a blue tick-
et through a narrow slit while
waiting for fourpence to be re-
leased from Katie's right hand.
Katie's left arm remained locked
in a form of paralysis around her
towel.
As Katie climbed the staircase
she felt scared. She knew those
who had climbed before, could
now hear her noisy footsteps an-
nouncing her approach. Twenty-
one, 22, 23, she counted before
reaching the open waiting area.
All eyes glanced at her, just as
they continued to do with every-
one who climbed the staircase.
Katie took her place on the bench
next to the mill worker. The room
was smoky and hushed. Yellow
stained walls were camouflaged
by a framed black and white pic-
ture of Dundee. Tram -cars of by-
gone days, the old Tay Bridge,
(before its collapse) and the Law
Hill, (a sleeping volcano), all por-
trayed the history of Dundee. The
occasional nod of the head across
the room, between acquaintances,
was the only sign of communica-
tion. The silence reminded Katie
of visits to the doctor, where, like
the bath house, the body was a
private matter. Dundonians kept
to themselves about such matters.
Each time the strong looking
woman dressed in a dark blue
smock came into the room and
yelled, 'Next', there was an auto-
matic shifting of bodies along the
six wooden benches. Katie
watched and listened anxiously,
making sure she knew the unspo-
ken rules within the waiting area.
She could hear voices calling pe-
culiar commands from up the
hallway, "Marc hot for number
fev please"; "That's plenty for
number ccht, thank you," and
"mare cald for number ll,
please." All of this left Katie won-
dering if she could get the courage
to yell out, and if she could,
would she know what to shout.
She was afraid she wouldn't be
able to find her voice, and if she
did, others would soon realize her
accent, like her mother's was
from Perthshire, and it would
surely bring notice.

waiting. She wondered if it was
their first time, and if they too
were unsure and nervous.
The attendant in blue had a
tone and manner like that of a drill
sergeant.
"Yer next," she said, pointing
to Katie.
As Katie stood up, she could
feel her knees weakening and her
cheeks flushing a bright red with
embarrassment. She imagined all
eyes were, once again, staring at
her; she convinced herself every-
one there knew this to be her first
visit at the bath house.
"Follow me," ordered the
woman in blue.
Katie hurried to keep up with
the woman as she led the way up
a narrow corridor. There was a se-
ries of numbered white doors,
even on the right, odd on the left.
Outside each door was a set of
shiny chrome taps marked "hot"
and "cold." The odd instructions
Katie had heard while waiting
were beginning to make some
sense.
"In here," commanded a voice
from one of the bathrooms to
Katie's left.
Katie was ushered into a spar-
ingly fitted bathroom by a carbon

woman had just finished cleaning
the bathtub. She rattled off a list
of instructions to Katie waving a
wash cloth, like a bull fighter, as
she gestured and recited the in-
structions.
"Yourroom is number seeven;
jist close the door; dinna lock it; if
ye need mare hot water, shout; if
ye need mare cald water shout; if
ye have enough water jist shout,
stop, that's 'nough'."
All of this was more than Katie
had bargained for, she wss close
to tears. The woman left the bath-
room saying, "And dinna dilly
dally, there's mare fowk waiting,
and I want hame the nicht."
As Katie laid down her towel
on the small stood at the side of
the bath, she was startled by the
sound of gushing water. She could
hear her heartbeat as each sound
seemed to echo in the cold and
clinical bathroom. The high ceil-
ing emphasized the stark white
tiled walls. Katie's body shivered
as she began to undress. Her fin-
gers became all thumbs as she
fumbled with stubborn buttons
and hooks.

Katie squeaked. Her voice carried

Katie, screamed "Stop, enough
for number seven."
"AlI right, I hear ye" came the
reply. The water stopped.
The silence of bathing alone in
such a large, cold space, coupled
with the loneliness she felt, made
Katie move quickly through the
motions of getting washed and
dressed. Katie wished she was at
home in front of the hearth gig-
gling with her brother and sister.
No laughter in this place she
lamented. When Katie came out
carrying her wet scrunched -up
towel, the attendant rushed past
her and began the cleaning ritual
all over again. I'm just a number
here, Katie thought, as she walked
up the hallway past the row of
white doors and shiny taps.
When Katie stepped out into
the cool, damp evening air she
began to shiver. She hurried along
Caldrum Street, past the police
box on James Street, then on to
Anne Street and up the stairs of
number 17.
ust as she had imagined, her
brother and sister were sitting
in front of a roaring fire, and
ready for bed. From the minute
she walked in. Katie was bom-
bardcd with questions, none of
which she felt like answering; to
each one she grudgingly replied
with a "no" or a "yes."
"Did you like it Katie?" ques-
tioned John.
"Did you hae the whole bath to
yersel'" asked Lizzie.
"Is it a big bathroom?" queried
John.
"Can you get as much hot
water as you want? Were any of
your pals there?" continued
Lizzie.
"Can you stay in the bath as
long as you want?" asked John.
"Are ye going back next
week?" asked Lizzie.
izzie, had hit a nerve, tears
filled Katie's eyes. Her
mother noticed her hurt,
and relieved Katie of the prying
questions from her brother and
sister by announcing, "Time for
bed, John and Lizzie."
Their bedtime routine of
singing and marching was led by
their mother as she tapped out the
beat on her tambourine.
Katie put on her nightgown,
which had been warming on the
firescreen. It felt comforting next
to the chilled skin. She sat staring
at the coloured flames, from the
coal fire, dancing up the chimney.
When her mother had finished
putting John and Lizzie to bed,
she made a pot of tea. As Katie
and her mother sipped tea by the
glow of the fire, they listened to
the weekly radio show, called
'Carl Levis and his Discoveries'.
Words between them were
scarce and unnecessary, as each
seemed to realize that Katie's bath
house experience had declared
this was her first step from child-
hood.

community leader during a
one-week program offered by
The Youth Centre.
Leaders In Action topics in-
clude learning to work as a
team. developing skills to be-
come a leader in the communi-
ty and enhancing communica-
tion skills.
Along with team -building
exercises, different physical
challenges will be used to help
develop leadership skills.
The program runs from
Monday, Aug. 9 to Friday,
Aug. 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. daily
at the East Shore Community
Centre, on Liverpool Road
south of Bayly Street in Pick-
ering.
The free course is open to
youths 13 to 19 years living in
Ajax or Pickering.
A participation certificate
will be presented to each par-
ticipant upon completion of
the course.

Not only do most people take time
off from work in the summer, many
also take a vacation from giving
blood.
However, the need for blood never
stops and Canadian Blood Services
must keep hospitals stocked with the
gift of life. To help replenish sup-
plies, the service is holding clinics in
Ajax and Pickering later this month
and all blood types are urgently need-
ed.
A clinic is being held in Ajax on
Tuesday, Aug. 24 from 12:30 to 8
p.m. at St. Bernadette's Church, at
the corner of Harwood Avenue and
Bayly Street.
The goal for that clinic is 225
units.
There's a two-day clinic in Picker-
ing on Thursday, Aug. 26 and Friday,
Aug. 27, from 2 to 8 p.m. both days
at the Metro East Trade Centre, on
Brock Road just north of Hwy. 401.
The goal is 110 units each day.
Also, from Aug. 16 to 27, the ser-
vice is staging the Durham Mayors'
Challenge, with the community giv-
ing the most per capita declared the
winner.
The CBS supplies 59 hospitals in
central Ontario. Up to four people
can be treated with each donation as
a unit is divided into four compo-
nents — red cells, plasma, platelets
and cryoprecipitate.
Healthy individuals aged 17 to 71
can donate, although first-time
donors must be 60 or younger. You
must have valid identification, in-
cluding one piece with a photograph
and donors must wait 56 days be-
tween donations.

non-profit groups
Durham Region has computers
available for non-profit or charitable
organizations.
There's a catch, however. The com-
puters are not Year 2000 compliant and
most don't have monitors.
The Region is offering the comput-
ers because they aren't compliant.
The computers are currently being
prepared for distribution and any inter-
ested agency should send a written
submission to Y2K Project Office, Box
623, 105 Consumers Dr., Whitby, On-
tario, LIN 6A3. Include the name of
the organization, the address, contact
name, phone number and charity regis-
tration number.

"Just as people's personalities vary, so too,
do the ways in which to frame an image.
Besides the number and colour of mats you
choose, take a look at the variety of textures
available in matting today. A silk or suede
top mat can alter the appearance of an image
dramatically! Instead of a simple frame that
blends into the piece, maybe a larger more
colourful and ornate frame would be nice
for a change. Finishing touches such as
shadow boxing, v -grooves, or other fancy
mat cuts can also add to the appearance of
the print."

The lost continent of Atlantis lives again in Caribbean

Once upon a time, as told by
the Greek philosopher, Plato, a
huge island continent existed
11,000 years ago, which spanned
the Atlantic Ocean from the
straits of Gibraltar to the new
American world.
It was said to have been the
nearest place to paradise on earth,
bounteous in fruits, vegetables.
fragrant flowers and herbs and
marvelous temples sparkling with
gold, silver and brass. Residing
amongst the gods were fantastic
creatures that roamed this land
and an extraordinary utopian civ-
ilization which enjoyed abun-
dance, harmony and riches.
Eventually their wealth turned
to greed. and greed led to corrup-
tion. As punishment, the gods
created earthquakes and tidal
waves that swallowed up this en-
tire land in just one day and night,
sinking it to the depths of the
great Atlantic. Or so the tale was
told.

lost continent of Atlantis contin-
ues to fascinate scientists and

In August 1969, the music world sat
down and listened as performer after
performer wrote a piece of rock history
in Woodstock, N.Y.
This weekend in Whitby, a group of
musicians is paying homage to those
three days in August. The show, being
billed as 'Visions of Woodstock', will
take place at Toll Booth Willy's on Sat-
urday. Aug. 7.
"We are going to cover bands from
the Woodstock concert as well as some
of the bands who we feel should have
been there;" says Roger Walker, one of
the organizers of the show." There will
be a few other surprises and the music
will be phenomenal:'
'Visions of Woodstock' was started
four years ago and the 16 -member
group has travelled across Canada
keeping alive the memory of Wood-
stock and some of the musicians who
were part of arguably the most popular
concert of all time.
"It is actually a good time for us to
present this concert, not only because of
the 30th anniversary of Woodstock, but
because people love the classics;" says
Q- 107's Al Joynes, a co-organizer of
the show. "As we get older, a lot of us
like to relive the classics (of the rock
era)."
Also responsible for 'Visions of
Woodstock' are Toll Booth Willy's
owner Gareth Smith and club manager
Les Lamaster.
"We want to stress this is not a con-
cert, but a show;" says Smith. -It's a
theme evening and audience participa-
tion plays a big part of the even—ng."
'Visions of Woodstock' is a four-
hour show consisting of 10 acts por-
traying greats like Neil Young, Janis
Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Creedence
Clearwater Revival. The 16 -member
band consists of top session musicians
like Rod Phillips (formerly of Light-
house), drummer Bruce Moffatt, The
Single parents
invited to a sock hop

On Saturday, Aug. 14, the Ajax -
Pickering Chapter of the One Parent
Family Association holds a fund-raising
dance with a 195(k and '60% theme. It's
being held at the Pickering Recreation

a.m. The cost is $8 for members and
$10 for non-members and tickets are
available at the door.

Pickering softball men drop doubleheader

Heat men's softball team
dropped both ends of a dou-
bleheader to the Owen
Sound Selects in Molson In-
ternational Softball Con-
gress Alliance league play in
Owen Sound on Tuesday,
July 27.
Owen Sound blanked the
Heat 7-0 in the first game.
The nightcap, however,
proved to be a much closer
affair as the Selects held off
Pickering 3-2.
Jamie Baker worked the
first one -and -one-third in-
nings, surrendering five runs
on four hits while register-
ing one strikeout. Chris Mc-
Coll came on to pitch the
next three -and -two-thirds
innings, giving up two hits.
In the second game, the
Heat were buoyed by home
runs from Jason Yoshida and
Jamie Baker in the contest.
Brad Bricknell took the loss
on the mound, giving up
eight hits while recording
three strikeouts.
The Heat earned a tie
while also losing to the
Scarborough Thunder in re-
cent doubleheader league
action in Scarborough.
The Heat played to a 5-5
tie with the Thunder in the
opener, but lost the nightcap
to Scarborough 6-0.
The Heat currently reside
in seventh place in the eight -
team standings with a mark
of 4-19-3 for I I points.

NOISE ATTENUATION BETWEEN MARKHAM ROAD AND NINTH LINE
The 407 ETR Concession Company Limited (ETR) is the private sector entity which has the
obligation to develop, design, build, operate, maintain, repair, and toll Highway 407 from the
Queen Elizabeth Way in the City of Burlington to Highway 7 east of Brock Road in the Town of
Pickering. This initial stage of the East Partial Extension project involves construction of a 4 -lane
toll highway easterly from Highway 48, with transition to a 44ane arterial road facility from west of
Brock Road to Highway 7 east of Brock Road by August 2001.
In accordance with the Conditions of Approval for Highway 407frransitway (Markham
Road/Highway 48 Easterly to Highway 7 East of Brock Road) specified under the Environmental
Assessment Act (Order -in -Council No. 1704/98), the ETR invites interested parties to attend an
information workshop to address the issue of noise attenuation between Highway 48 (Markham
Road) and Ninth Line in the Town of Markham (please refer to accompanying key plan).

Discussion topics "I include anticipated noise impacts and mitigation measures from highway
construction and operation, types of noise attenuation, constriction activities and techniques, and
hours of construction activity. Input from the workshop session will be used to finalize the noise
mitigation strategy along this section of the proposed Highway 407.
This workshop will take place on August 18, 1999 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Markham
Village Community Centre, Highway 48 and Highway 7 in the Town of Markham.
