Approximately 300 short stories were submitted for the News Ad- vertiser's first short story contest, which provided a welcome chore for us to sort through the varied and compelling stories we received. First place was awarded to Port Perry resident Kay Langmuir for her short story called 'Keepsakes', while second place was taken by Craig Norton for his story The Loss of Gregory Porter. Third-place ho- nours went to Andrea Zekveld of Janetville for her story Inside Grandma's Skin and an honourable mention goes to Kathleen Martin for her entry The Bath House. Fifteen finalists were selected in the first round of judging; those were then forwarded to a three- member Writers' Circle of Durham Region judging parcel. Author and poet Ruth Walker, of Whitby; novelist Rabindranath Maharaj, of Ajax, and author Bill Swan, of Courtice, took on the task of selecting the winners. Pickering to curb street vendors "Most annoying' practice prompts action PICKERING — The sale of flowers and other goods on street corners here has become a thorn in the side of Town officials and they're moving to nip the problem in the bud. To do so, the Town must re- quest provincial legislation autho- rizing it to pass a bylaw that ;would allow it to confiscate any goods, wares or merchandise, in - eluding produce, being sold from any highway or on any vacant lot adjacent to any highway within the town. Councillors will vote on a res - giving the clerk and solic- A:. itor permission to make that ap- plication at their council meeting Tuesday. Flower vendors are the "most annoying" roadside vendors in Pickering, reports clerk Bruce Taylor. "All we can do is issue a fine (of about $150), which they look at as the cost of doing business.' Not even police officers are al- lowed to confiscate the merchan- dise, which would be an -effec- tive way" of getting vendors of the streets, says Mr. Taylor. Several municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area, including Mississauga, have successfully applied for the type of legislation being sought by Pickering. It's also in place in Ottawa, London and Brampton, Mr. Taylor notes. The Town is hoping its appli- cation will proceed to the provin- cial legislature this fall, which would allow it to have the bylaw in place by next spring, when the sale of flowers on roadsides is at its peak with Easter and Mother's Day. The Town says it will approach Minister of Education and Picker- ing -Ajax -Uxbridge MPP Janet Ecker for her support on the issue. Durham reacts to Saskatchewan ruling Prayer plans still on for public schools BY SUSAN O'NE/LL Staff Writer While Durham's public school students could soon start each day with a prayer in the classroom, that practice is coming to an end in Saskatoon where prayer was banned from schools this week. The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission declared the practice of reciting the Lord's Prayer in Saskatoon's public schools discriminatory Tuesday, saying it interferes with the free- dom of religion of all students. Ken Halvorson, a retired judge who headed a tribunal on the issue in July, agreed with the nine par- ents who complained to the Human Rights Commission in 1993 that Saskatoon's public schools were discriminating against their children because the school day began with a prayer and Bible reading. "His parents have every right to be proud of him," dispatcher Anne Preyde says of Mark Ruberry, a student at Glen - grove Public School. "He was polite and very well-spoken." And because he was "so calm", it took ambulance attendants just a little more than four minutes to reach his home when he called June 15. "I didn't have to ask him anything more than once," recalls Ms. Preyde, who had a chance to meet Mark, his grandmother Maria Bulhoes and other family members on 'Thursday, when she presented the computer whiz with a cer- tificate. "He was very responsible," says Ms. Preyde. "Even the ambulance attendants said they were impressed with this kid", who had to look after his six-year-old brother Sam while dealing with his grandmother. While Mark's mother Carm was "shocked" to arrive home to see an am- bulance and police car in the driveway, she was impressed to learn of her son's efforts. He had even given his grand- mother a glass of orange juice with extra sugar while waiting for emergency crews to arrive. He also translated for his grandmother, who speaks only Por- tuguese, when crews needed to know the type of medication she was taking. Yet it wasn't the first time he talked to emergency dispatchers. N E W EDITORIAL Treatment of Nikita an eye opener Child abuse should provoke same reaction A good point was raised this week by someone who had read much of the media coverage about Nikita, a one -year-old rottweiler who was se- verely injured when she was dragged behind a pickup truck in Bewdley. The severe injuries inflicted on the dog and the incident, which has received world-wide publicity with over $30,000 in donations coming in for the Nikita fund, has given some pause for thought. One person wondered wouldn't it be wonderful if people were as out- raged about the treatment some chil- dren receive, as they are about the sickening way the puppy with the big brown eyes was treated:' How many times have you wit- nessed a small child being dragged along by his or her arm, obviously in distress, at the hands of someone who is supposed to be a guardian and safe -keeper? What about the Mom or Dad who only know one volume when they want the attention of their children - loud - and crank it up to another level when the small children don't pay at- tention, or worse yet, when those children mimic their parents by yelling back." We may tend to think it is none of our business to interfere. The parents must surely know what they are doing. But how often is the child damaged emotionally as he tries to figure out what it is he needs to do to make things better? Nikita is no doubt a playful young dog. She may have been at the wrong place at the wrong time. She may have been the target of a devastating release of anger. The courts will de- cide where to place blame and what will become of the injured dog. The incident has drawn a vast array of emotions from people across the country and beyond. Money has poured into the Nikita fund for her medical care and the person accused of causing her pain and terror has had his own life threatened, he says. Indignation, anger, grief and car- ing for the animal have all been felt. We feel a need to protect the inno- cent and the young among us from the meanness and danger in the world. The Nikita case smacks readers in the face and demands a reaction. But it would be a better world if the treat- ment of defenceless children upset us as much as the treatment of defence- less pets. We all want our independence for as long as we can, however our bodies age and we are unable to do what we used to. Could we look at life a little dif- ferently prior to this and realize the true value of it. These are not the material things that we have ac- quired but the memories that we store in our hearts. "It proves to me we have a good relationship be- tween the different faiths," she says. "I'm more posi- tive than ever that we're on the right track. It shows that Durham (residents are) respecting one another in our faiths and in our be- liefs." Although the public board isn't planning to reintroduce the daily recital of the Lord's Prayer — which was banned from Ontario's public schools by an Ontario Court of Appeal ruling in 1988 — trustees voted 6-4 June 21 to ad- dress the spiritual needs of students with a "spiritual encouragement; a positive thought for the day; a scrip- ture passage or prayer for the students' well-being" as pan of daily morning exer- cises in every school. Yet, some trustees fear the board is treading on dangerous ground and other community members say it could be opening it- self up to a legal challenge if prayer is mandated. "I could see the possibil- ity of someone taking ex- ccption to any sort of movement in this regard," says Oshawa parent Jane Hurst. "1 don't think the board should be opening it- self to a challenge. "In view of the diversity of our school population it would be wise not to go down that path," she says, noting she recognizes the -good intentions" of the trustees who supported the motion introduced by Trustee Weist. However, Ms. Hurst maintains "prayer is per- sonal" and says "it is not the board's responsibility to provide religious instruc- tion of any form in the school." Ontario's school boards are permitted to begin each day with a prayer or inspi- rational reading that re- flects the multicultural make-up of the province. "I think the route we've taken (in establishing a committee) will keep us within the legislation," notes Scugog trustee Bob- bie Drew, adding the multi- cultural make-up of the committee will ensure the board doesn't give "prima- cy" to any one faith. "What I'm looking for is inspirational messages," Trustee Drew adds, "I don't think anybody could object to that. I think we can all agree on an inspirational message." "It's something that real- ly needs to be looked at," says Whitby Trustee Eliza- beth Roy. "When it comes to recognizing all the faiths, there are so many out there that it's going to be very difficult to please everybody." Trustee Roy believes an inspirational message or positive thought for the day would be "a better way" to start the school day and says introducing prayers could cause "a lot of prob- lems" and might alienate students who are nonbe- lievers. The board also voted to form a committee responsi- ble for preparing a resource booklet of multi -faith read- ings and prayers for use in schools. That committee is ex- pected to report back to trustees before November. Ikram Makki, president of the Muslim Youth and Community Centre of Pick- ering/Durham and a mem- ber of the board's commit- tee, says "there are a lot of things we have to consid- er." He ieports that approxi- mately 50 community members will sit on the committee and maintains the group has "to work in the best interests of the stu- dents. "It's going to be very difficult to implement," he says, stressing the fact that he doesn't want the issue to create "friction" within the community. "I don't want to see that. E 0 N E Whether people are believ- ers or non -believers, we all have the best interests of the students at the fore- front," Mr. Makki notes. And, while Mr. Halvor- son recommended the Saskatoon school board set up a religious course of study rather than reciting prayers in the classroom, Pickering trustee Ruth Ann Schedlich says some high schools here already offer a religion course for credit purposes. But, given recent curriculum changes in ele- mentary schools, Uxbridge trustee Nancy Loraine notes she "would be cau- tious with that approach" in elementary schools. "I think that compiling some- thing representative of the different groups is, for now, a better option." 0 Meanwhile, Oshawa trustee Kathleen Hopper re- ports she's heard "equal feedback" from community members who support the board's motion and from those who don't. A coy smile crept up Eva Locke's cheeks. She leaned over and patted her husband's arm. "You see, I'm not so bad; ' she cajoled gently. Edward cocked a skeptical eye- brow at his wife but the weird - home program had him roped and tied. He raised a thick -muscled hand at the screen. "Look at this one. This fellow built his whole house out of bottles - embalming -fluid bottles" Eva knew his professional inter- est was peaked. She saw his eye- brows bear down and reckoned that he was mulling over how bottles performed as a load-bearing wall. Edward was a contractor; he built farm buildings mostly, a house oc- casionally as a favour to a good customer. She hadn't asked a question but she found herself hoping for an an- swer. She kept her eyes on him, willing his attention to turn back to her. Eva needed reassurance again, not so much because of her odd ways - she knew they were odd - but that her quietly enduring hus- band was still coping with them. She instantly understood the beer -can man. She believed she could see how the idea settled on him one loopy giddy night as his buddies shuffled out the door. Maybe some of them were older or ailing or visiting from afar or all three and it struck him suddenly like a bird thudding against his windshield that they likely would- n't be together again. And as he turned a bleary eye to the circle of empty chairs and the phalanx of empty beer cans arranged neatly on the table he saw instead a sacred relic of their friendship, of all his friendships, and he could not throw them out. There it began, a record and a monument honouring love and happiness, though a man would use other words. Eva, in the beginning, was only partial to antiques and old houses simply because that was what she knew. She grew up on a century farm in the comforting shadow of her ancestors. Her kin had been born and had died in its rooms, and they spoke to her across time. She has been a journalist for weekly and daily newspapers and Canadian'Press. Kati and her husband live in Port Perrv. when told of his son's death in the First World War. Nobody wanted to plaster over it. The family had been damaged. The chink was grief and loss materialized. Early on Eva became inclined to save things touched by those she loved. And she had a knack for keeping her emotional attachments in daily view rather than attic stor- age. Her grandmother's canoe pad- dle served as a curtain rod. Her grandfather's leather cavalry boots held dried flowers. She made patchwork blankets and cushion covers from her family's favourite old clothes. There were picture frames decorated with glued -on buttons and bits of old jewelry. In the summer, nasturtiums and forget-me-nots overran blackened kettles, a wooden potty seat, an an- cient pram, a cracked creel. Vines engulfed decaying wagon wheels, old child safety gates and disman- tled crib sides all dutifully tacked to the side of the house by the ever - obliging Edward. He liked to save a dollar and Eva always featured fi- nances in her bids to sell him on her various sentimental recycling schemes. "Lord save us," Edward would sigh, and then Eva knew he'd agreed. They had three children, one son with a new family of his own and two daughters in college. There had been a fourth, born unexpect- edly when Eva was past 40. He was exquisite, with a face as serene as the moon and a full head of red curls. He never opened his eyes. It was inexplicable to her. It was as if his spirit refused to descend from the ether to the grungy coil of life below. They buried him in the fall. Eva had watched leaves ambling and cart -wheeling into the grave like children running after one an- other on a playground. Atfirst, she kept the child's pho- tograph in a drawer along with his tiny handprints and footprints inked at the hospital. After that, those close to her including her husband would say she turned a lit- tle morbid. The ink prints ended up modest- ly framed on the back wall of the enclosed porch where she and Ed- ward spent their summer evenings. Around it she hung dented da- guerreotypes of solemn ancestors and the tear -blurred telegram an- nouncing the solider son's death at Vimy Ridge. It had been crumpled in anguish and thrown away, then retrieved and smoothed flat. An umbrella stand near the door held the canes and walking sticks that had steadied the family elders. Ed- ward and Eva weren't in need of them yet, but Edward didn't like them. Their neighbour Margaret, a widow pushing 70, hated them. She could hardly bear to visit in the porch, despite the sublime view of Eva's gardens. Margaret busted up one evening visit after a half hour of fidgeting in her chair. "Uggh!" Margaret rose quickly with a slapping push of the chair arms and strode to the comer of the porch as if a bad smell had over- taken her. Eva instinctively stood and rolled up a magazine, battle ready. "Where is it?" Eva asked, her eyes on the floor. Margaret was terrified of spi- ders and Eva was her reluctant pro- tector -en forcer. ro- lector-enforcer. "No Eva;' Margaret groaned. She wished it were that simple. She wasn't anxious to challenge her friend's private feelings. All these dead things and dead people around you! Doesn't it bother you?" Eva was startled by the force of her objection and Margaret was worked up enough to answer her own question. "Obviously not;' she continued. "But I don't like being reminded all the time of where I'm ending up. And how decrepit and drooling I'll likely be before I get there" Eva was relieved that Margaret had said her piece. She leaned back and rested more deeply in her chair. "It's comforting to me, Mag- gie," she said calmly. "It reminds me that where I'm going eventual- ly is a very crowded place. And that means the people I've lost aren't alone either." "I never knew you believed in the after life" "1 didn't say I did. I don't know what comes after. I just think what- ever it is everybody's there togeth- er, even if it's only in the sense that they've all gone through death:' Eva frowned at her own words. What was she trying to say? Mar- garet was frowning too. Eva looked out at the garden at the gingko tree she had planted with her children, its odd split fan -leaves shuddering in the breeze. The kids always called it the dinosaur tree since she first told them the story of how it grew in the prehistoric swamps. Her eyes dropped back to Mar- garet's. "When I was younger I used to think a child's birth was life's big event. I was so curious. Somewhat in awe of women who'd been through it. They knew something I didn't. Now I feel the same way about death. It's a little scary and you worry about the pain. But there's the wonder of new life, or the hope of new life. I don't care if you're religious or not. We all hope there's something after." "All right I understand that," Margaret replied quickly, trying to hurry the discussion along. "But why think about it at all? Just enjoy life.- "Have ife""Have you ever been around anyone who's terminally ill Mag- gie? "Not if I can help it." Margaret knew Eva volunteered at the hospital. But it was a big place. Not even Edward knew Eva spent most of her time in the pallia- tive -care unit. "People who've seen death up close enjoy life more. If you're dying, even the smallest things in life, like the smell of coffee or the cat scratching in the litter box mean the world to you.' Margaret nervously smoothed her caftan over her lap. Eva under- stood she wanted to leave the topic. "Well you're braver than I am," Margaret concluded. "I just don't know how Edward handles it day in day out." Eva didn't respond. Their talk turned back to roses. Edward's taciturn ways troubled her. Once and awhile he blew and lately she worried the steam was rising. He had greeted some of her recent projects with muted disgust rather than his usual wry tolerance. She had rescued an old warped chest of drawers long used in Ed- ward's family after spying it loaded in his truck with dump -bound junk. At first he thought she was just painting it. Then it appeared in the upstairs hall covered in large black calligraphy - lines from a poem fre- quently read at funerals. "I don't want to see that Do -not - mourn -for -me -I' m-the-wind-and- tlower-food crap on my way to the bathroom for heavens' sake!" Ed- ward rarely raised his voice and Eva immediately offered to move it. That was a month ago. The chest was still there and the matter hadn't been mentioned since. Eva as- sumed he'd succeeded in ignoring it. Then there had been that busi- ness with the cat. She had lost her tail to the sharp edge of a heavv screen door. A most beautiful, long, downy -striped tail. A creature unto itself which used to seductively stroke the chin of the lap in which it sat. Edward swore when he found it hung up to dry and hurled it into the trash. Eva rushed to save it and clutched it defensively against her chest as she pleaded her case. "Edward, do you remember Ben Lieberman's funeral? He lost that leg years before but they saved it and put it in the grave with him. I love Prou. 1 don't want to throw part of her out." When Edward rejected the idea as revolting, she reminded him of the raccoon's tail tied to his car aer- ial when they first began courting. So the tail was still there. It re- placed the pull chain on a wall lamp over the kitchen sink. Eva still loved its silkiness. Edward still hated it. But the kitchen was her territory. He didn't mention it again. Now Eva sat on the couch wish- ing he would answer, worrying that the absence of an answer was her answer. She began aggressively flipping the pages of her gardening magazine and Edward, with perspi- cacity earned through many years of marriage, divined that words were required. - He stretched and yawned and in his perplexing way began speaking on a different subject. He flexed on elbow and rotated his shoulder. "You keep me in a good running order Eva," he declared.17here are boys at the job who get stiffer than I do. Maybe it's your massages, maybe it's your joint oil" Eva had put him on cod-liver oil supple- ments which he stomached only because he'd seen arthritis pain cripple his mother. "You know," he drawled, "I walked by those cartes the other day and found myself feeling real thankful I can get around as well as I do" More silence. But this was good though, thought Eva. In the past, he'd complained about the canes. But Lord he had such a strange roundabout way of speaking his mind. He turned and delivered a pinching squeeze behind her knee. She jumped and swatted his knuck- les with her magazine. His eyes met hers full of benign deviltry, and Eva felt herself relax. j "Eva love, you get rid of that cat tail and I'll call y?u normal." The hum of silence. Ambient noise of people walking on padded shoes. The occasional ex- change of low-key voices. The rush of elevator doors opening and clos- ing. Wheeled beds rolling down the hall. A nurse speaks. A reply. "This way please." A sterile and cold light on a linoleum floor. Multi -coloured lines travelling highways like unimagina- tive road maps. Mint green walls dis- playing poor facsimiles of famous Canadian paintings in shabby frames. A young man with an open dress shirt and loosened tie holding a Sports coat. Day -and -a -half old beard. Bloodshot eyes. Empty Styro- foam cup in other hand. One shoe coming untied. Walking slowly down the hall. A nurse emerges from elevators behind him. I'm mourning. That's no reason "Mr. Porter!" to let yourself go like that. He stops and turns toward the So what. I'll kill you, and shut up. voice. I'm just saying, is all. "I'm sorry, but there's this... these Yes, yes. Yes -_-you are just say- ing. She's gone, huh. Yes. She's gone. You loved her a lot, huh. Mm, very much. Are you all right, sir?" A voice. Should I answer? "Sir?„ "Yes. Fine. Thank you" "All right. Are you sure? You've been stand- ing there for a while'!" "Yes, thank you, I was just lost in my thoughts a moment.- "All oment.'"All right" "Thank you, though." "No problem. Have a nice day. ,. "Evening " "Yeah, right, evening. Well. Bye.- "Bye-bye. ye " "Bye-bye" Blackbird. Yeah. Blackbird. You okay? You've been standing there for a while? Yes, thank you. I'm fine. Thank you. This is a rental car. I can't remember how it opens. Could've said that. Guess I'm still feeling sorry for myself. Porter fumbles with his keys and pushes them into the lock. He opens the door and gets in. He starts the en- gine. A very sad song is already on the radio. He tuns the radio off. He is very sad. Porter's wife died this af- ternoon. It was an accident. We11, not really an accident. But a placement of the wrong person in the absolute- ly wrong place at the wrong time. Potter pulls out of the garage that he had panted his car in when he got to the hospital yesterday morning. She had been in the hospital for three days. He had rushed in from Toron- to. He had been there within hours of getting the call. Well, within hours of them calling him. He had only been there for half the time she had. Now she was gone. Approximately half the time he has been alive. Poor Porter. She was his life, his all, his everything. Now she was gone. He is not sure what he will do without her. Nobody knows yet, of course. . He thinks for a moment and looks back at her. "No. I don't think so." "Are you going to go home, or..." "Yes. "Well, are you all right - I mean, to drive" "Yes. Fine. Is there anything else?" . "No. Will you come back tomor- row?" 'Why?" ? .'Well, there are the ... prepara- tions, and ..' He thinks for moment and looks back at her. "Oh. Well, then, yes. lI guess .. " She thinks for a moment. "I'm very may, Greg„ "Yes. I'm very sorry, too" He turns away from her and walks down the hall. She watches him go. She is very sad for him. He is not taking it very well. Keys go into locks. Locks open doors. I'm being very self-indulgent. Her parents. His parents. Their friends. Her friends, his friends. The hospital knows. And most of the country has heard that something happened three days ago at the air- port. A bomb or something. Every- one is very concerned, but no details have been released and family and friends of those who were travelling are very worried, but the Porters' friends and families have no idea she was travelling. She was supposed to meet me in Toronto. I was finishing that day and she would meet me in Toronto. We were to have a very ro- mantic week together, and no one would know we were there. They did that sometimes, when she was alive, take off together. But no more. Wow, this car is really going very fast Very fast. One might even say too fast But, no, it's on the highway, and it's okay to go that fast Where am I going'? Oh yes that's right, I'm ... No wait Where am I going? Home? Where's that? Home. Home, home, home, home. What a strange word home. Home has lost all meaning. Home is where the what is? Home, home, home is something he does not have any more. She was home to him... No, not that one. The next street. Never mind the horns, they're not for you. No, they're honking at something else. Someone else. Someone who has not lost his wife. Someone else, some other person. Go house, Porter, go house. Peter's carturns down a street and then tarns into a driveway. He turns the car off and gets out of the car. He locks the doors with the automatic lock and climbs the in- clined driveway that leads up to their house. Wasn't it a rental car'? Rental. No. That was what I could have said to the man in the parking garage. No. She owns this car. She had left it at the airport, and ... that's right. Much better. Dogs. Porter opens the door and goes inside. He hears the scampering of feetsies running from the window in their bedroom upstairs, the running of pawsies down the stairs and run- ning toward him. The pawsies jump up and rest on his chest. Porter grabs the dogs and lies down on the floor. He tries to he playful, but cries in- stead. The dogs lick his face and try to make him stop crying. He cries for a very long time, even though the phone rings. The dogs want to lie down beside him and make him feel better, but they've been hungry for the whole day, now it's night time, so they begin to whine because they don't know how to fix it themselves. ' Okay, puppies. I'll feed you. I'm sorry, it's just that, Mommy died today boys, so I'm very sad. I'm � puppies " Pater gets up off the floor and makes his way to the kitchen. He gets their food out of the pantry and that puts some into their bowls. They eat and he closes the pantry and sits down in front of the sink and watches the dogs eat and then Potter cries some more. Oh, Porter is very sad. He looks miserable. He is very sad. He has not eaten in two days. He is too sad to eat. All the life has gone out of him. Except for the life it takes to feed the doggies - They finish their meals and walk over to him and he pets them and they lay their heads down on his lap and he poets their heads and they try to comfort him by being dogs. Porter goes upstairs. Time for bed Pater. He gets his clothes off and he gets into bed and the bed still has her smell and her pillow smells just like her and he swears he can feel her warmth and God I miss her so much. I missed her in Toronto and she's re- ally gone now and really gone he re- ally cries this time because this is where it hurts the most. Porter will cry for the rest of the night. Until he falls asleep. Porter gets up in the morning and goes to the hospital. The doctor greets him and there is a federal po- lice something there and they ask him questions and he tries to answer them. The nurse is there. Sometimes she puts a hand on his shoulder and he turns to look at her and she gives him coffee in a Styrofoam cup. He drinks it but he cannot taste it. He looks awful. He isn't answering any of their questions now. The officer or whatever looks at him a moment. then he places a hand on Porter's hand. "I'm very sorry for your loss, Greg-- I've heard that one before. "Thank you. I'm sorry I'm not being much help" "That's all right. It's understand- able. Why don't we continue anoth- er day... .Thank you" The doctor has some things for Porter to sign and he signs them and a funny little man in a sombre suit comes in and talks to Porter in a very sad voice and tells him about the fu- neral and Porter's parents are mak- ing all the arrangements. I didn't know they knew. "Mv parents''" The doctor called them yesterday night. They will all he here tonight. His parents. Her parents. Maybe I will give the dogs to my father. Porter goes downstairs to the morgue and they leave him. She is lying on a metal beef and a sheet is covering her face. He pulls it back and she is so beautiful and I cannot stand this. There is a long scream somewhere inside his head. There is nothing left in my life. I cannot be- lieve how painful this is. She is gone she is gone she is gone she is gone she is gone. He places his hand on her hand and she does not move but God how I wish she would. Her fare is still so beautiful. God she's cold. Great, now I'm crying again. She's not coming back I know. She's really gone now. Yes. Yes, I know. She's dead. Yes. Dead. It is okay to cry. I know. I am. I know. It's okay. He kisses her once on the mouth. She does not kiss him back. This hurts so much. This hurts almost as much as he loves her. But she is not coming back and the finality of that is more than he can bear. It's okay, you've done your best. I know. You can go now. I know. Porter lift the sheet a little and pull her close to me. Get up on the metal bed and hold her in my arms. Pull the sheet back over your heads and try to fall asleep. Bye-bye, Porter. Bye. Anyone who has one would agree. So it should come as no surprise that they need special care. Dr. Christina McRae loves cats. That's why she wanted to open a vet- erinary clinic that catered specifically to felines. The clinic opened 31 /2 yearsago and is the only cat hospital west of Ottawa and east of Scarborough. The first thing you notice when you enter the King Street Cat Hospital in Oshawa is the waiting area. And with decreased bleeding, less risk of anemia. The forties and fifties are often trying ages for women. Pe- riods may become irregular and heavy causing annoyance and wont'. Abnormal bleeding of this type must always be reported to the doctor. But once cancer and other problems have been ruled out the pill will often control this bleeding. Add it all up and OC's have more than lived up to their origi- nal expectations. The tourney, slated for Aug. 7 and 8, will feature girls' teams in the under -10, under -11 and under -12 age categories. The under -10 division will feature teams from Ajax, Pickering, Dixie and Whitby. Action in this division gets under way on Saturday morning at 10:15 a.m. The championship and consola- tion final games in the bracket are slated for 11:15 a.m. Sunday. Meanwhile, seven teams will vie for the championship title in the under -11 category. Teams from Whit- by. Ajax, Markham, Brampton, West Rouge, Pickering and Peterborough will compete in the age group. Prelim- inary round action gets under way at 9 a.m. Saturday.
