counts of key events and features.
The book is supposed to be a cele-
bration of the millennium and a
summing up of Pickering's history
at the turn of the millennium.
It's expected to cost up to
$150,000 to get it published for
sale at $10 a copy. Much of that
cost is to be covered by sponsor-
ships from community businesses,
organizations and individuals,
who'll be recognized by having
their names displayed on a 'ribbon'
along the sides of pages in the
book.
Historical society president Tom
Mohr has described the book as an
opportunity for sponsors to be
"scratching their names in the wet
cement of a new era".
Unfortunately, the society has
only been able to really get the
marketing of the sponsorships

you spoke to in the neigh-
bourhood was upset by it,"
says Ms. Herzog. "To any-
body who complained, we
said 'here's the customer
service number, phone and
complain and tell them what
you want'"
Residents didn't want the
No Frills store, she explains,
because it would not be a
full-service supermarket,
with amenities such as its
own bakery and deli depart-
ment.
"They would be limited
in the choice of what they
buy and the service would
be less"
Seniors in particular,
notes Ms. Herzog, were
worried they would lose
things like carry -out service.
"People were concerned
about those who work there
as well because they live in
the community too" The ex-
pectation was many would
lose their jobs at the new
store.
Mr. Wilson suggests that
probably won't happen now.
-I would imagine a good
majority would stay on but I
don't have any details on
that;' he says.
Pamela Spence, who's
shopped at the existing su-
permarket for 10 years,
wrote to Loblaw Compa-
nies, helped compile the pe-
tition, and went before Pick-
ering council to ask for the
Town's assistance. She
noted the local situation was
part of a national issue of
takeovers in the supermarket
sector, yet to be approved by
the federal Competition Tri-
bunal, that could result in
the market being controlled
and possibly manipulated by
only two corporate super-
market giants.

"It's been difficult to reach a number
of people:' says Gail Lawlor of the so-
ciety, who's in charge of marketing the

An Ajax man accused of pho-
tographing partially -nude young girls
while they slept appeared in court
Monday on four new charges and was
released on $10,000 hail.
Acting on a tip from an Oshawa
photo lab, detectives from the Durham
Regional Police sexual assault unit last
week searched a residence and seized
a camera, camcorder and pictures of
girls who appeared to have been posed
for the photographs while asleep.
Police say they know the identity of
three victims, Oshawa girls between
the ages of I 1 and 18. The search also
uncovered approximately 200 video-
tapes, cassettes and several articles of
girls' underwear, police said.
The investigation began June 30
after a customer dropped off some film
at an Oshawa photo lab. Concerned
employees alerted police after devel-
oping the film.
Detectives waited for the owner to
show up at the store and collect the
pictures, before making an arrest.
Thomas Bickerton, 36, of Glynn
Road, Ajax, was originally charged
with possession of child pornography,
making child pornography, sexual as-
sault and two counts of possession of
stolen property.
On Monday, Mr. Bickerton ap-
peared in Ontario Court of Justice. Os-
hawa, where he was also charged with
one count of sexual exploitation and
three of mischief -interfering with the
lawful use or enjoyment of property.
Following a bail hearing, he was re-
leased under the supervision of a
court -approved surety, his father.

The investigation, meanwhile, is
.continuing and polis�g . have not ruled
out the possibility more charges.
"We still have a large number of
videotapes and cassettes to review,"
said Sergeant Jim Grimley, police
spokesman.
Police have asked anyone with in-
formation about the case to call detec-
jtives at 579-1520, ext. 5317 or 5319.
Still, the society is soldiering on
through the summer with the project be-
cause it would like to have the book
ready for launch at the beginning of De-
cember, to take advantage of the Christ-
mas season and to be able to jointly
market it with the Harvest International
film/video project also under way to
commemorate the millennium in Pick-
ering.
While the goal is still to raise as
close to the $150,000 as possible, Mr.
Sabean says he could likely proceed
with the printing in preparation for a
December launch if $100,000 was
raised by the end of August.
"Later than that it would be very dif-
ficult for us to get the book out on time"
So the society is appealing to local
businesses and the community to get
out of the summer holiday mode for just
a bit and consider sponsoring Picker-
ing's millennium book. Sponsorships
are available at rates ranging from $400
to $5.000 and tax receipts will be is-
sued.
Mr. Mohr notes the project provides
sponsors a chance to leave their person-
al mark on the millennium celebration,
"to say 'I was there, this is who I am,
here is my gift to the future.' On a cor-
porate level, it allows a business to say
'thank you' to the supporting communi-
ty, ,.
Those alreadv committed to snon-
sorships include Ontario Power Genera-
tion, CMR Disposal, Waterfront Bistro,
T. Amts Loam Supply Ltd., Massey's
Restaurant, Lloyds Laboratories, Pine
Ridge Garden Gallery, Simcoe Engi-
neering, Pickering East Shore Commu-
nity Association, Fire Department Em-
ployees Credit Union, Pistritto's Farms,
Willoughbys Gifts, Swans Marina, Bay
Cycle and Konica.
Anyone who would like to know
more about sponsoring the book is in-
vited to call Ms. Lawlor at 509-8901.
Mr. Sabean is also still accepting
contributions of photos for the project,
but only for another week or two. He
has already collected lots of pictures, in-
cluding images of local disasters such
as a train wreck and flooding in the
1920s.
"I never even thought of disasters
when we started:' he notes.
He could use more photos of sports,
festivals and celebrations and anything
that reflects Pickering's multicultural
history and character.
"I want to get some non-European
faces and some non-Christian religions
represented in the book"
Anyone with photos of these and
other subjects they think might be suit-
able may phone Mr. Sabean at 831-
381 1. Pictures can be wanned right in
people's homes if they're worried about

Federal government must
make meaningful cuts

It's time for the federal government
to pay back the people which have cre-
ated the surplus it now enjoys.
The feds, in their September Speech
from the Throne and certainly in next
February's budget, must deliver a solid,
hefty tax cut.
'Brat's not a new call mind you.
We've been clamouring for a serious
federal tax cut for more than a year
now. But other than a few token mea-
stues taken in the last federal budget,
the governing Liberals have not been
listening.
Now comes a well -thought-out plan
from the Canadian Chamber of Com-
merce to redistribute federal surpluses
back to taxpayers. The move would
have no impact on current spending on
programs since only surpluses — that
is, excess tax revenue beyond what has
been budgeted for to balance the books
— would make up the tax cut.
The Canadian chamber figures the
measure would put about $500 back
into the pockets of a two-income-eam-
er, two -child family which makes about
$65.000 a year. The chamber also feels
that $500 would be spent helping to
boost the fortunes of businesses every-
where who would have to put some of
that $500 back into government coffers
in the form of taxes (at least 15 per cent
of that $500 in the form of GST/PST
alone).
It would appear to be a win-win sce-
nario. What makes even more sense is
that the Canadian economy, while
doing well, is lagging behind the white-
hot American economy. Critics argue
Canada must try to close the gap with
its largest trading partner with in-
creased productivity and more growth;
otherwise the Canadian standard of liv-
ing will continue to drop as compared
with that of the U.S. It's a compelling
case.
While the provincial Tories did have
to borrow to finance their 30 -per cent
provincial income tax cut - which was
accomplished while the Province still
was in deficit as it hasn't yet run a sur-
plus - there is no excuse for the feds not
to come through with a sizeable tax cut.
Canadians have worked long hours for
years to help the government do more
than balance its books. All the chamber
is arguing for is some fairness from the
fells. Let's hope that during their sum-
mer hiatus from Parliament, cabinet
members and backhenchers are listen-
ing.

likely fall prey to other wild animals

As tragedy struck the
Kennedy family again this past
weekend, people here and
around the world have been
stunned by the news of the death
of the young man they felt they'd
known since birth.
"I think it's simply that we've
known him all his life and have
followed his carver," says John
Sabean, vice president of the
Pickering Township Historical
Society, of the public's fascina-
tion with the Kennedy family
and the outpouring of grief at the
news of the death of America's
favourite son.
John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife
Carolyn and her sister Lauren
Bessette, are presumed dead
after the small single engine
plane piloted by the son of the
late U.S. president crashed into
the waters off the coast of
Martha's Vineyard Friday.
A massive search and rescue
operation conducted by the U.S.
Coast Guard following the crash
became a search and recovery
mission late Sunday when it be-
came apparent that it was unlike-
ly any survivors would be found.
"Tire family seems to have
had an unusual number of
tragedies, possibly because of
the kind of life they pursue. They
live life on the edge," says Mr.
Sabean who grew up near
Boston, Massachusetts before
moving to Canada in 1969.
"Just as they follow royalty in
Britain, in the United States they
follow the Kennedys," he says,
noting the 38 -year-old son of the
35th President of the United
States lived his entire life in the
spotlight.
"I think people had a lot of
hope for him," says Pickering
Township Historical Society
president Tom Mohr, adding
many hoped "he might follow in
his father's footsteps and be-
come president of the United
States."
Calling the family the "clos-
est thing the States have to royal-
ty," Mr. Mohr adds, `"there
seems to be just a whole lot of
sorrow attached to the fwnily.

And, he believes the recent
tragedy has had such a wide-
spread impact on the public be-
cause of the strong associations
with the Camelot era of early
1960s, a time of hope and opti-
mism about the future.
Everyone in their mid-40s or
older remembers where they
were when they first heard about
President Kennedy's assassina-
tion, he says, noting "Any events
with the Kennedy family sort of
bring all that back. All the subse-
quent tragedies bring that
back ... It invokes a lot of ghosts"
Mr. Mohr says President
Kennedy "epitomized every-
thing that made the United States
great. Kennedy represented the
new (post-war) era There was a
lot of hope. People really
thought there were good times
ahead and the western world was
absolutely the best place to live.-
"I

Kennedy came to power," Mr.
Sabean adds, noting the Ameri-
can public embraced JFK and his
presidency because it represent-
ed "the beginning of a new
era..it was a time of youth and
glamour"
Meanwhile, at Chapters in

there had been no "significant
customer traffic," however she
noted when a tragedy occurs in-
volving a celebrity, the store usu-
ally witnesses an increase in the
sale of books about the deceased.
"I think everybody is pretty
much waiting to hear that
they've found the body," she
says. "I think we were all still
hoping ... it's pretty devastating."

To boldly go where no one
has gone before
Pickering Web weasel infiltrates
. forbidden places
They don't steal, they don't vandal-
ize. Like the climbers of Everest, the
makers of Infiltration approach their
next forbidden conquest simply be-
cause it's there.
The details of each incursion are
posted on the Web at www.infiltra-
tion.org, replete with photographic ev-
idence of their discoveries and devilish
tales of close encounters with security
guards.
So are the people behind Infiltration
minors behaving like miners'? Not ex-
actly. The magazine is actually the
handiwork of one Ninjalicious, a 25-
year- old Pickering man who admits to
a lifelong fascination with forbidden
places.
Contacted by E-mail recently. Nin-
jalicious declined to be interviewed,
citing a reluctance to elevate his pro-
file. And judging by the reaction from
various Toronto security officials, that
profile is already beyond their comfort
level.
"They're trespassing, and while
they may believe it's entirely harmless,
we believe otherwise;" said Dwaine
Nichol, City of Toronto manager of se-
curity and life safety.
"They're going into some very danger-
ous areas. And because everything they
do ends up on the Internet, it poses a
danger to others who might attempt
similar acts.
"From the City's point of view, we
want the contents of the magazine re-
moved from the Web"
Inadvertently, says Mr. Nichol, In-
filtration "has been helpful as a cata-
lyst" to bring about a budgeted S I -mil-
lion overhaul of security measures at
City hall and other public buildings in
Toronto.
"All our security systems were very
antiquated. By December, we expect to
have completely overhauled our weak-
nesses, with updated locks, signage,
communication systems and proce-
dures to ensure what they did can't
happen again"
By the letter of the law, police say
Infiltration's trail of published evi-
dence potentially could lead to charges
of trespassing, public mischief and
common nuisance, all of which are
summary convictions punishable by
fines of $2,000 and up to six months in
jail.
But Toronto police don't appear
prepared to play the heavies, not yet at
least.
"We've taken a very close look at
what they're up to and obviously it's a
security issue, said Steve Irwin, a de-
tective with the police intelligence
unit.
"The concern is that because it's on
the Internet, you don't even have to get
off your butt to learn where and how
they've gotten into places," he said.
"So while they may be entirely be-
nign, if someone else were looking to
cause a significant event, this informa-
tion would be useful. They would
know where the chinks in the armour
are.
While Det. Irwin's concern involves
Toronto's public places, security offi-
cials at private buildings breached by
Infiltration regard the magazine's in-
cursions with mixed reactions.
"They got into the basement! That's
fantastic," said MuchMusic
spokesperson Sandra Puglielli upon
learning of the magazine's adventures
inside CHUM/City headquarters, doc-
umented in Infiltration's premiere
issue.
"But I can promise you this couldn't
happen now," she added. "Our securi-
ty is tight, very, very tight"
A security officer at St. Michael's
Hospital, meanwhile, was taken aback
upon learning that Infiltration had
prowled the bowels of the building, re-
plete with visits to the basement
morgue.
"Oh good God by Jesus holy
cripes." the officer blurted. "We have
enough problems as it is"
In its Internet summary of the mas-
sively complex St. Mike's facility,
Ninjalicious complains that "The hos-
pital's official visitors map is more of a
desperate cry for help than a useful
guide." He proceeds to remap the hos-
pital, paying special heed to the most
easily accessed entrance points.
In its current issue, Infiltration 13,
Ninjalicious details multiple excur-
sions into the Sheppard subway con-
struction site, including a 2 a.m. hike
from one end of the line to the other.
"Still no sign of any security whatso-
ever!," he notes in a diary entry.
Upcoming issues, according to the
Web site, will include explorations of
tunnels under Degrassi and Central
Tech high schools and a special feature
on breaching Toronto entertainment
venues the Masonic Temple, Roy
Thomson Hall and the SkyDome.
While Infiltration is just one of sev-
eral Web efforts dedicated to the sport
of "urban spelunking;' it's become one
of the darlings of the 'zine scene. Not
only because of its audacious presenta-
tion, but also because of its service-ori-
ented approach, which offers readers
practical tips on how to follow its lead
without getting caught. Or hurt.
For example, Infiltration takes pains
to warn readers about such caveats as
the TTC's electrified third -rail. But the
magazine also offers some fairly glib
reasoning as to why anyone is rightful-
ly entitled to go to such places.
"`Employees only' and 'Staff only'
areas really only exclude the unem-
ployed," Ninjalicious declares in an In-
filtration 2 article titled `Warning
Signs: How To Ignore Them.
If you have any sort of job at all,
even just the occasional bit of babysit-
ting, you can enter these areas with a
clear conscience."
None of which even slightly amuses
Toronto City Hall security chief Mr.
Nichol.
. "We know it's not just Toronto; this
whole issue of what they call urban
spelunking, it's a large thing in other
cities," he said.
`"Rtey might view it as modern cave
exploring, but what's harmless to one
person can be pretty dangerous for an-
other.
"The upshot is that now we have to
do an Internet search every week, just
to see what's being said about Toronto
City Hall and whether or not other
groups are getting on board"

continues to chalk up wins at
tournaments, winning the re-
cent Newmarket event, while
finishing as the runners-up at
the Mississauga tournament.
At Mississauga, the Pick-
ering bantams advanced to
the championship against a
strong Brampton team and,
despite a last -inning rally,
Pickering fell 14-13 in the
final. With Brampton lead-
ing 14-7 entering the final
inning, Pickering scored six
runs in the inning and left the
tying run on base to come up
one run short of knotting the
contest. Pickering's most
valuable player was catcher
and co -captain Caitlin Pask.
Pickering completed the
round-robin portion of the
Mississauga tourney with a
perfect 3-0 record. Picker-
ing prevailed 2-1 over Chin-
guacousy in a well -played
contest. Melissa Baril was
the offensive star with a
home run and a run -scoring
triple.
In the second game, the
local selects rolled to an easy
12-2 win over Martingrove.
Contributing two hits apiece
were Michelle Douglas,
Pask, Heather Wilkinson,
Wendy Taylor, Courtney
Puddister and Nicole Mc-
Culloch.
After falling behind 4-1
in the early going to
Oakville in the third game,
Pickering put it all together
for an 11-4 win. A seven -run
outburst in the second inning
followed by some outstand-
ing defence paved the way
for the victory. Brenda
Burgess hit a three -run home
run late in the game to seal
the win.
Meanwhile, at the New-
market tournament, Picker-
ing posted a solid 7-2 win
over Brampton to claim the
championship crown. The
Bob Hendricksen Construc-
tion bantams scored four
runs in the third inning and
never looked back in achiev-
ing their second tourney
championship of the season.
Pickering won the Whitby
tourney title last month.
Pickering first baseman
McCulloch was selected
Pickering's MVP of the
final. She led Pickering's de-
fence with two unassisted
double plays as well as sev-
eral other defensive gems.
Angel Gray pitched a
strong game in the champi-
onship contest. Backed by
solid defence, she recorded
only one strikeout, but con-
tinually kept the Brampton
hitters off balance during the
seven -inning final.
The Pickering girls' start-
ed the Newmarket event
with two convincing wins
over Chinguacousy and
Whitby by 10-0 and 12-4
scores respectively, to earn a
berth in the championship
game against Brampton.

PICKERING — A member of this
year's Stanley Cup champs, who
played for the Pickering Panthers ju-
nior hockey team, will bring profes-
sional sports' most -coveted trophy to
Durham this Friday.
Joe Nieuwendyk, a Whitby native
and standout for the Dallas Stars, will
bring the cup to his hometown along
with the Conn Smythe Trophy which
he won as the most valuable player of
the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Both trophies will be on display in
the main lobby of the Iroquois Park
Sports Centre, 500 Victoria St. W. from
' 4 to 11 p.m. that day.
An official presentation by the Town
of Whitby will take place at 1:30 p.m.

sign autographs from 2 to 4 p.m.
The talented centre, who also won
the Stanley Cup with the Calgary
