They've helped seniors re-
main in their own homes, made
sure surgery patients were on
the mend and allowed those
destined not to recover, a peace-
ful death. The Durham Branch
of the Victorian Order of Nurses
has visited patients at home for
85 years and although the
method used to travel Durham's
highways and byways is as dif-
ferent today as the changes in
medical technology, the nurses'
care remains as vital.
The VON started in Durham
in 1914 when one Ione nurse
first rude her bicycle on her ap-
pointed rounds in Whitby. Little
could the woman realize the
thousands of lives her new orga-
nization would touch in the
decades to come.
But despite the modern vehi-
cles the nurses drive throughout
Durham's many communities in
1999, the road can still be a
bumpy one. Reduced levels of
funding, a nursing shortage and
pay equity arc all challenges felt
in the nursing profession. Add
in increased technology, an
aging population, and shorter
hospital stays and the VON
nurse is as important today as
ever.
Be they full- or part-time
nurses, executive director Eve-
lyn Smith says the branch's
nurses and staff' are "dedicated
and skilled to the hilt" in their
quest to provide nursing care
throughout the region, 24 hours
a day. She emphasizes that the
VON is not an emergency care
service and that it works closely
with agencies such as Durham
Access to Care. It's primary
source of funding is the ministry
of health and it is governed by
volunteer board of directors.

nurses covering Durham Re -
Sion, all women except for one
male nurse. They contend with
four-day post operative patients
who've undergone open heart
surgery and run the gamut of
ailments that can afflict
teenagers through to seniors.
"It is caring from birth to
death;' says Ms. Smith. "al-
though we don't do active pedi-
atrics" The nurses work differ-
ent shifts, the time,, they are
needed often specified by it
physician. A working nurse is
on call at night. The nurses' ser-
vices may be needed for short
term acute care or long term
chronic.
Established more than 100
years ago in Ottawa, the VON
came into its own nationally
during crises like the 1917 Hal-
ifax Disaster, the Influenia Epi-
demic of 1918 and through both
world wars. Prenatal education,
well baby clinics, school health
services, visiting nursing wr-
vices and coordinated home
care programs all had their ori-
gins with VON. More recent ini-
tiatives include home -batted pal-
liative care for the dying, adult
day programs, foot care clinics,
respite care, primary health care
clinics and health services in
shelters for women, children
and youth.
The: services offered by each
branch are based on the specific
needs of the community. The
contemporary VON nurse pro-
vides education for caregivers
of the developmentally chal-
lenged. they run wellness clin-
ics, help pont-op cancer patients
with enterostomal therapy, they

fairs assessments, cholesterol
testing, massage therapy and
continence training.

computer camps for elementary
school pupils at Highhush Public
School in Pickering recently.
The camps, operating at elementary
schools across the region throughout
July and August, provide underprivi-
leged students between the ages of
nine and 13 a chance to participate in
a variety of academic activities. In-
cluding designing a mousetrap -pow-
ered racing car and using digital cam-
eras and the Internet to complete a
multi -media project.
"I think it was awesome," camp or-
ganizer Jenny Reynolds says of the
first week. "it went extremely well."
The Oshawa resident is one of five
counsellors overseeing the camps,
being funded through a grant of ap-
proximately $13,000 from Industry
Canada and by donations from heal
businesses, including IBM and Honda
Whitby -Oshawa, that helped pay for
student transportation. Ms. Reynolds
notes pupils are only asked to pay $25
each to participate in the five-day
camp -

Pupils also created computer docu-
ments featuring their designs with the
use of the Hyper Studio program, and
learned how to create computer pro-
grams, use digital cameras and import
data.
"They've learned a lot," Ms. Mor.
rison says. "All of these things have
applications across, not just the cur-
riculum, but in the workplace toxo."
The board ran a similar camp for
underprivileged pupils during the
summer of 1997, but the program was
cancelled last year due to a lack of
funding.
This year, the computer camps are
being run in Pickering, Whitby. Os-
hawa and Beaverton.
The camp has moved to R. A. Sen-
nett Public School in Whitby July 12
to 16. It's running from July 19 to 23
at Beaverton Public School in Beaver-
ton, July 26 to 30 and Aug. 2 to 6 at
Mary Street Public School in Oshawa
and Aug. 9 to 13 at William Dunbar
Public School in Pickering.

summer, is considered liberal by cler-
gy standards. He does not emphasize

Rev. Eagle sees a growing interest
in spirituality as people realize a fami-

Rev. Eagle. "it's like water. People
need a drink of water. It doesn't [natter
if someone says, 'you don't need a
drink of water."'
Fr. Lennon doesn't see a general
shift from the worldly in tour society.
What passes for spiritual development
today is often personal development,
not a meaningful quest for spirituality,
he suggests.
"We have yet to take a measure of
how deeph entrenched secularism is
in our society and our churches," says
Fr. Lennon.

When four reactors at the Pickering Nuclear Generating
Station were shut down two summers ago, then -Ontario
Hydro chairman Bill Farlinger blamed the problems on a
"sort of special nuclear cult' which he said had developed in
the utility's nuclear division.
"Our problems are people, not machines.- Mr. Farlinger
said at a press conference called by the utility to explain its
stunning decision to indefinitely shut down seven of its 19
nuclear reactors, including those in Pickering. and spend $8
billion over the next five years to improve nuclear operations.
He said the cult at work running Hydro's nuclear division
was resistant to supervision and change. "Senior manage-
ment didn't dig in to what was going on in this special unit to
the extent we might now say they should have."
Mr. Farlinger's statements and a shake-up in Hydro man-
agement followed in the wake of a scathing 'Independent In-
tegrated Performance Assessment' report on the utility's nu-
clear operations presented to Hydro's board of directors.
In their report. IIPA team members observed that at the
Pickering station and other nuclear plants, "It's acceptable to
cut corners. It is not acceptable to make waves. Those who

preferred over disclosure, where management seemed to
want to be left in the dark about anything negative. where it
was felt best to withhold such information from the public.
Well. Ontario Hydro no longer operates the Pickering nu-
clear station. Ontario Power Generation is running the show
now. The utility has a different name, but it would seem to be
playing the same game. where misinformation is preferred
over free flow of accurate informauon to the public, where
the best possible spin is placed on the most negative news.
(After all, a major accident at the Pickering nuclear plant is
still referred to as a 'reportable event'.)
The continued presence of a cult still at work running On-
tario's nuclear stations is made apparent by the way OPG has
been conducting itself of late and by the propagandizmg by
the Power Workers' Union.
The union itself seems to he so caught up in the utility's
spin doctoring that it was guilty of the misinformation once
practised by Hydro in a recent letter to the editor of the News
Advertiser. Thc correspondence signed by Power Workers'
Union president John Murphy was in response to a previous
missive from Dave Martin of Durham Nuclear Awareness.
In his later, Mr. Murphy refers to -the upgrading of the
eight reactor units (across the province) that were temporari-
ly laid up by Ontano Hydro's successor. Ontario Power Gen-
eration as part of its mtckar operauonal excellence program. -
The union president would prefer the public believe the shut-
down was a positive, pro -active step taken by the utility
rather than a reaction to the IIPA's damning report. And, it
wasn't OPG which "laid up" the reactors-. it was Hydro. By
playing fast and loose with fats familiar to anyone who
knew% anything about the Pickering power plant. Mr. Mur-
phy snakes us wonder what misinformation he's guilty of
spreading in relatio rt to nuclear issues that art so complex the
general public couldn't understand them and therefore could-
n't question the information.
Then, there's OPG itself. The utility knew in mid-May
that the Atomic Energy Control Board would order a federal
environmental assessment of the Pickering nuclear plant's
'A' side before allowing the restart of the four reactors. But
OPG officials were mum about the requirement for a federal
review at the recent meeting of the Community Advisory

claimed he "never got a chancre" to mention it at the meeting
because a presentation on the restart was removed from the

PICKERING — The Pickering
Power under -12 boys' rep soccer team
continues to power past the opposition
both in league play at the premier level
and in tournaments so far this season.
In their most recent tourney out-
ing, the Power played in Laval. Que-
bec. The Pickering boys finished 1n the
top four at one of the biggest events in
that province. with more than 320
teams taking part. The under -12 age
group featured 24 squads. Pickering
was defeated by Brossard Lynx 2-0 in
the semi-final game. During the tour-
nament. Power allowed only two goals
against while scoring 17 goals in five
games.
