Pickering residents win power line fight BY MARIANNE TAKACS Staff Writer PICKERING —Town council has rejected a controversial plan to move power lines from Kingston Road to a hydro corridor in the Maple Ridge neighbourhood. The $3.8 -million transfer was to be undertaken by Pickering Hydra at the request of the Town to improve the appearance of Hwy. 2 and to create further opportuni- ties for valuable commercial and office development on Pickering's main drag. Council's decision Monday was sweet victory for area resi- dents fighting the project tooth and nail since February, when they first learned of a plan to put the lines about 10 feet behind the rear prop- erty boundanes of homes backing on to the hydro corridor. The plan was later changed to place the lines between the existing power towers in the corridor. However, the residents were still not satisfied and about 100 of them filled the council chamber Monday to per- suade politicians to oppose the transfer. "Unsightly, potentially unsafe and unhealthy commercial hydro lines do not belong in a residential, recreational, school and conserva- tion area;' Paul Marrin of Field- stone Circle told councillors, not- ing the project would require cut- ting down 18 trees in the Duffins Creek watershed and chopping the tops off about 80 more. '-We do not believe we should be cutting down trees to relocate wires that are too unsightly for our streets" He urged the Town not to take the "cheap route" and "improve one arca at the peril of another"_ Area resident Bill -Alexander told councillors 250 citizens had signed a petition opposing the transfer. Ajax $4.4 million and Clarington $1.9 million. In Durham last Tuesday to sell Re- form party members on the idea of cre- ating a new political party, and to raise funds, Preston Manning put on a brave face despite the fact his chief fund-rais- er announced his resignation just hours before. The reason Patrick Ryall gave for relinquishing his post June 29 as presi- dent of the Reform Fund of Canada was that he doesn't agree with the de- cision to pursue creation of a new po- litical party. In his "Give me a (tax) break" campaign, Mr. Manning says he is calling for a 25 -per cent reduction in federal taxation over the next three years, geared to a timeline of the Liberals' next budget in Feb- ruary. "We will also present our own tax relief program in conjunction with the next federal budget," said Mr. Manning, "to show the Liber- als how." The most enthusiastic applause of the evening was a promise made by the federal leader to reduce capital gains tax by 50 per cent. Mr. Manning broached the subject of the United Alternative initiative, an effort, he said, to stop splitting the conservative vote in Canada. He called for "Canadians of all walks in life" to unite to get tax levels down. He spoke of an auto worker from Windsor, Ont. who showed him his pay stub after working over- time with a net pay in the same amount as deductions. "The average family spends more on taxes than on food, cloth- ing and shelter;" he said. On the minds of the decided and undecided, was the June I1 result of a Reform party referen- dum in which 60.5 per cent rank - and -file members supported con- tinuing the United Alternative ini- tiative to create a new conserva- tive political party. "I'm here for only one reason;' said Scugog resident Joel Aldred, a (Prime Minister John) Dicfenbakcr-era speech writer and broadcaster, in his introduc- tion to Mr. Manning, following a $150- a -plate roast beef dinner at Thunder- bird Golf and Country Club. "I believe in exactly what Preston Manning is doing" Beginning by acknowledging the 89 -year-old Mr. Starr, former federal minister of labour and the last surviv- ing member of the Diefenbaker cabinet of 40 years ago, Mr. Manning then congratulated both Mrs. Ecker and Mr. Ouellette on being re-elected in the re- cent Ontario election. There was a blue mood for the em- battled Reform leader as his chief fund-raiser resigned only hours before the Durham stopover due to the con- troversy surrounding the so-called United Alternative. But there was also a blue presence in the audience with the participation of local Progressive Conservative MPP% Janet Ecker and Jerry Ouellette and former federal Tory cabinet minister Michael Starr. But Mr. Manning's main message will likely play well anywhere: deep, broad-based tax relief. The Reform leader's 'Give Me A (Tax) Break' campaign calls for a 25 - per cent reduction in federal taxes over the next three years. And never one to pass on an opportunity to take a jab at the Liberals, Mr. Manning promised to present Reform's own tax relief pro - grain in conjunction with the next fed- eral budget in February "to show the Liberals how". Though Mr. Mannings tax relief message - particularly in an audience with sitting members of the Mike Har- ris Tory government in Ontario - is welcome in Durham Region by people :still feeling the strain of high taxation, there was an urgency to his message on the United Alternative. Even active Reform members have had trouble embracing the concept of a united political right wing. (Fewer than half of Reform members cast ballots in a party referendum.) So Mr. Manning is reaching out here in Durham and elsewhere to address the concern that a United Alternative will somehow di- lute Reform's founding principles. Reform has never succeeded in any great measure in Ontario and that isn't likely to change without some big change within the party itself. Hence, the United Alternative can be seen ei- thcr as a brilliant political evolution for those perched on the right, or as a poor attempt at providing artificial respira- tion for a dying party. No matter where you stand philo- sophically, however, few would argue about the merits of a plan to substan- tially reduce federal taxes. Ontarians voted with their hearts and their heads for the Tones twice, largely due to tax relief. Surely Reform has been paying attention. Tax relief? Some would say it's only common sense. June 19. Reading between the lines it appears to me that some employ- ees could be adversely affected by a joint transit organization. 1 would quickly condemn any ac- tion which results in a job loss. What we sometimes forget is that we need to open our minds to see the more elusive opportunities that also exist. Hiring a doula is one such op- portunity that recently factored into my .family's life. Our first-born son was two weeks late and had to be delivered by cae- sarean section or we would risk the lives of both mother and child. At our next birth, my wife was not swayed by the myth "Once a caesarean always a caesarean" Nicole wanted to hire a doula; I had never even heard of one. Realizing that it would be extreme- ly difficult for my wife to handle an ac- tive two-year-old and a newborn while recovering from a second caesarean, I opened my mind and wallet to look at Henry Zaczek Opinion Shaper possible alternatives. I cleverly sur- mised that natural birth was a beautiful but stressful time for fathers; I felt that I could use all the help I could geL This is especially true when mother decides to go into labour at 2 am. on Jan. 3, 1999 during the biggest snowstorm of the winter. While -the doula did not help me shovel snow, she sure took the edge off the stress once we made our way to the hospital. Yes! She made it to the hospital too. Our doula, Tracey McCannell, was a positive and assertive coach who sup- ported my wife's view that natural birth was very possible after a caesare- an. With her by our side, during the first 10 hours of my wife's excruciating labour, I was perfectly relaxed. In the last two hours, however, when things got so rough that both my wife and I had decided natural birth was not in our cards, Tracey pulled an ace from her sleeve and asked us to consider using it. With the hos- pital's support (especially a nurse called Stacey), Nicole and Tracey did their part to dispel a long-standing myth. Our family's life was made eas- ier. It can lead to depression, fam- ily break-up, violence and once in a while suicide. I suggest the towns of Ajax and Pickering bear this in mind during these talks. I will not sanction any merger or amalgamation if it means job losses. What concerns me greatly in this part of Durham is the frenet- ic rush of commuter traffic as the public jockeys for the fastest lanes on our rubber -worn roads. In Pickering, the GO train sta- tion parking lot fills up in no time. The overflow at the nearby arena is impractical; it's too far away and there are no sidewalks on Bayly Street. Nearby streets are used. Parking tickets are is- sued. And then I see Town buses nearly empty morning and night as they attempt to co-ordinate with the trains. I don't mean to condemn my Town's administra- tion but what's wrong with this picture? I see a failing transit system and a horror story on Bayly Street twice a day. I see money spent on studies but our gridlock worsens; it has become a morass. Perhaps it's time to spend money on how to correct the en- tire transit system, never mind a merger. "He made a big difference in my life," Pickering resident Mike Hen- ning says of' his former Big Brother Glenn Toner. "We were well matched and had common interests in sports;" Mr. Henning says of the match, made when he was 10 years old and living in Kitchener. His parents had di- vorced several years earlier and he seldom saw his father. While Mr. Henning credits "a great mom who put us in spans and did so much for us", the oldest of three boys also rememlx:n "feeling different" when it came time for fa- ther -son games. "I specifically remember those situations;" says Mr. Henning, now 39. "1 remember the low self-es- teem. But a year later, my Big Brother was there. 1 think it was a building block for mc" Admittedly, "I don't think I would have gone as far in sports if it weren't for Glenn;' says Mr. Hen- ning, the father of a two-year-old boy and with another baby due late this summer. "He helped me develop confi- dence and I started to get g(xxJ at some things;' Mr. Henning recalls, pointing to his days as co -captain of fix: high school football team and winning championships. He also played hockey and baseball. "This is not an appropriate ac- tion to be taking to meet the objec- tives of the Kingston Road Corri- dor Study," he noted. His motion originally stated the $3.8 million should be diverted to burying power lines on Liverpool Road South and West Shore Boulevard, the two `gateways' to the town's waterfront. But the majority of politicians, including Coun. Hol- land, voted to delete that part of the resolution and continue to support the option of getting rid of the lines on Kingston Road. They suggested Pickering Hydro should continue to seek alternative ways of elimi- nating the lines. Only Mayor Wayne Arthurs and Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson supported the transfer. Coun. Johnson noted that with the upcoming merger of local electri- cal utilities in Pickering, Ajax and Clarington, Pickering may never again get such a "golden opportu- nity" to get the lines off Kingston Road because its new merger part- ners are not likely to approve such an expenditure. The mayor noted the additional new line would "not substantially change" electromagnetic emis- sions in the Maple Ridge hydro corridor, and that all the studies done for the town recommending the removal of the lines from Kingston Road had already provid- ed a business case justifying the cost of the project. Mayor Arthurs said after the meeting the cost of burying the lines remains "prohibitive". The drama started around 1:15 p.m. when a local business- man went to deposit his week- end receipts in the night deposit at the Roval Bank, 4 Harwood Ave. S.. Ajax, Durham Regional Police said. He was approached by a man who demanded the bag of cash. When the businessman resisted. the robber threatened him with a semi-automatic handgun, grabbed the cash and ran to a car, Sergeant Jim Grimley said. A witness who had spotted the car and its two occupants in the area before the robbery called 911 when she saw the crime. Police in Ajax and Pl, k- cring were notilied and the car. a Plymouth Reliant, was seen get- ting westbound on Hwy. 401. The car ended up in front of Detective John Gilker, who kept an eye on its until cruisers ar- rived. The car pulled off at the Whites Road ramp and stopped, at which point police surrounded it around 1:2.5 p.m. One man surrendered but the second fled on foot, eventually climbing onto a roof of a home on Sheppard Avenue and jump- ing onto a second roof. Media Q B.C.'s Cannery Row tells fishermen's tale BY MARGARET DEEFHOLTS Special to the Wens Advertiser When advised to allow at least an hour to go through the Gulf of Georgia Cannery museum at Steveston, B.C. I was skeptical. My information sheet said it was built in 1894 and that after it closed its doors in the '70s, it was designated a National Historic Site. It now operates under the um- brella of the federally -ad- ministered Canadian Parks Service and, under the aus- pices of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, it's been open to the public since 1994. Notwithstanding all that, in my book the cannery was a place with assembly lines and machinery, a few pho- tos, and dry facts and statis- tics on charts displayed alongside a collection of old artifacts. Worth about 15 to 20 minutes at most. That was what I thought until I stepped inside and found myself drawn into a dynam- ic, multi -media experience that was sheer entertain- ment. Where else can you step onto a huge weigh scale and find out what your value would be if you were a salmon'? Or walk through a model fishing trawler, take a look at the crew's living quarters, and snicker at one of the occupants'? (I won't tell you any more...you'II have to find out 'why' for yourself!) Or stick your hand in a bucket of bloodied fish entrails (okay, I didn't go quite that far!) which isn't real, but you'd never know the difference, except that it doesn't smell'? Smell, in fact, is one of the few sensory experiences you won't have when walk- ing through the cannery. But even that isn't hard to imag- ine, when you visualize the boats unloading their cargo at the wide entrance of the cannery (back in the 1920s), and you hear that the entire area was waist -high in fish. The sights and sounds of the fishing industry are evoked vividly on screens, and as you walk along the canning line, sensors trigger sound effects — the clank of machinery, noise and confu- sion of everyday working conditions. The Chinese crews worked on contract and were paid one cent per 1,000 cans off the production line, earn- ing between 835 and 850 a month — not a bad seasonal wage in those days. With cans whizzing by them at the rate of two per second, it was small wonder that newcomers turned dizzy and fainted after the first hour or two. Sealed cans stacked on trays were cooked within a huge iron oven -like retort. It is said that the retort at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery had another use too. On pay day, the party scene among the workers sometimes tend- ed to become a bit too ram- bunctious and law enforce- ment officers would have to he called in. If the cells at the local prison were full, the hot -heads were dumped inside the retort (its door bolted to six inches ajar) where they were left to cool off till the following morn- ing. The cannery offers some- thing for all ages: Children can open drawers and peek at artifacts, push buttons to watch audio-visual shows, turn cranks and pull aside flaps to reveal secrets of the octan. Adults will marvel at the human drama and shared ca- maraderie of the people who lived, loved, worked and died here. A charming 20 - minute film, 'A Journey Through Time', is an old fisherman's tale as told to his young grand -daughter, and plays in the surround - sound Boiler House Theatre within the museum building.
