Ward 2 local Councillor Mark Holland, who represents the area, says he's planning to bring a motion before colleagues June 28 that would ask the politicians to oppose a plan by Pickering Hydro to spend S3.8 million on transferring power lines from Kingston Road to a hydro corridor in the Maple Ridge neighbourhood. The motion states there are more important priorities to spend the money on and the ob- jective of moving the lines off Kingston Road can he achieved in a different way. The ultimate decision on the powerlines will still be up to the Pickering Hydro Commission, says the councillor, unless it decides on its own to refer the decision to the Town. The Town had requested the transfer of power lines off Kingston Road to im- prove the appearance of Pickering's main thorough- fare and to create further op- portunities for valuable com- mercial and business devel- opment there. Removal of the lines was recommended in a study on the Kingston Road corridor approved by council last year. "They're premising this action based upon that deci- sion;' says Coun. Holland. "I think there is a measure of doubt as to whether this is how council would like to see this issue proceed." He suggests council needs to examine what the Town's priorities should be in terms of moving wires, and consider whether there wouldn't be better ways to spend the money. One option would he burying power lines on Liverpool Road and West Shore Boulevard, the two main routes to water- front recreation areas. That, he says, would provide more attractive gateways to the waterfront, where the Town plans major improvements. Coun. Holland also sug- gests there may be better ways to get rid of the lines on Kingston Road than moving them through the Maple Ridge hydro corridor. The commission has de- ferred a final vote on tllc transfer in order to give resi- dents and the Town time to try to get some of the extra $1 million needed to bury the lines in Maple Ridge from Ontario Hydro Services Company, which owns the corridor, and/or Ontario Power Generation, which owns the Pickering nuclear station. Teachers will also be in- volved in "extensive" train- ing around the new high school report card this fall, he noted. "It's a different way of re- porting to parents. High-speed chase called off PICKERING - Durham Regional Police say a high- speed pursuit which began after a break-in at a Pickering beer store was called off be- causc: of safety concerns. Witnesses said two men smashed through the doors and then sped off in a black half -ton pickup truck. A short time later, the vehicle was spotted on Hwy. 401, near the Durham/Scarhorough border. While I believe in effectual prayer in a personal God, I also be- lieve the home is where it should be taught and practised. The con- troversy over prayer in the public schools today is the strongest evi- dence that we are in a state or moral and spiritual decay. Canada is going the way of all nations that have crumbled, which humanized and secularized their principal institutions to exclude and deny a sovereign God His rightful place in the affairs of man. Show me a society which doesn't uphold Godly principles and re- spect for humanity and I will point YOU to the rubbish heap of so- called powerful nations of the past, like the former Soviet Union, and others which humanized and secu- larized their own existence to the point of moral, spiritual and eco- nomic collapse. Pickering's third Community Pride Day held on Saturday. April 24th was a complete success. Many individuals and community groups were involved with a variety of projects that included cleaning up litter, and tree and shrub planting. I am sure everyone would agree that all our greenbelts, marshlands and other open spaces are much cleaner and more attractive as a result of these community efforts. COMMUNITY PRIDE AWARDS The Council of the Town of Pickering has created the Community Pride Award Program to recognize groups and individuals who make significant contributions to keeping their neighbourhoods clean and inviting while generally displaying promoting pride in the Town of Pickering. These awards shall be given by Council following each Community Pride Day to two individuals and one organization from each of the three Wards in the Town of Pickering. The Pickering Baseball Associa- tion hosted the 1999 Pickering Rookie Ball Select baseball tourna- ment which featured teams from across the GTA, including Picker- ing, Cawthra, Maple, Richmond Hill, Whitby and Barrie. The Pickering Pirates rookies, comprised of the best eight- and nine-year-old players from the house league ranks, made it all the way to the championship game, be- fore meeting up with the hard-hit- ting Cawthra As, who defeated the Pirates 22-12. Peter Colicchio was named Pick- ering' s tournament most valuable player. In Sunday's semi-final game, the Pickering Pirates. defeated Whitby 13-10 in what was without doubt the hardest -fought game of the tour- nament. The Pirates got off to an impres- sive start by defeating Maple 19-11 and then Barrie 21-5. "It's the biggest coup for eco- nomic development personally in my I I years here," says Doug Lin- deblom, the Town's manager of economic development. That news is the long sought after and much anticipated im- provements to Hwy. 401 through Ajax which will bring a new inter- change at Pickering Beach Road, something Town Council and the Town's Economic Development Department has been lobbying the provincial government for for many years. In April, Ontario minister of transportation Tony Clement an- nounced the construction of a new Hwy. 401 interchange at Pickering Beach Road would be commenc- ing in the year 2,000, along with the widening of Hwy. 40, from six to eight lanes between Harwood Avenue and Pickering Beach Road. The announcement was greeted by Ajax civic officials with enthu- siasm and a sigh of relief that the Town's push, together with the Re- gion of Durham, for the much- needed project to bolster develop- ment in the town's south end would now come to fruition. "The provincial announcement will lead to a new era of develop- ment in the Town of Ajax," said Ajax Mayor Steve Parish at the time of the province's announce- ment. "This new interchange will pave the way for the introduction of significant industrial develop- ment and jobs and will help attract badly needed hotel/conference fa- cilities in west Durham" The Province will cover two- thirds of the cost of the new inter- change, with the Town of Ajax, the Region of Durham and private sec- tor partners covering the remaining one-third of the $48.5 million price tag. Hot on the heels of the province's announcement came word that a new $65 million state- of-the-art hotel, convention and entertainment complex would be built at the north-east corner of the Hwy. 401 and Pickering Beach Road, soon to be renamed Car- ruthers Creek Parkway. Expected completion is expected to be in the next two to three years. The development will include a 250 room/suite five-star hotel, meeting rooms and convention fa- cilities for groups from five to 1,000 people, a health and fitness centre, corporate facilities and of- fices, a variety of restaurants rang- ing from fast food to fine dining, and a family entertainment facility which will feature video and virtu- al reality games, in-line skating and trick rink, billiards, bowling and play areas for younger chil- dren. The development is headed by Venture World Developments Inc., led by local businessmen Michael Wells and George Coutts. Lindeblom says talks with Ven - New interchange 'will lead to a new era of development in the Town of Ajax'. Mayor Steve Parish cure World for a new hotel com- plex in Ajax began more than a year, but at that time there was no commitment for an interchange to be built. Officials with Venture World were convinced the Picker- ing Beach site was the best in west Durham for a hotel development, but only as long as an interchange was built. DuPont continues its leadership in safe communities program Providing safe communities is in every- one's best interest. To that end, DuPont - Ajax has become a partner in the Safe Communities of Pickering/Ajax (SCOPA), launched last year, but is continuing to gain momentum in 1999. DuPont, at 408 Fairall St., Ajax, is one firm of a coalition of 30 key community partners of towns, area firms, organiza- tions and individuals which has set as their mandate: working together for the reduc- tion of accidents and injuries within the business sector and initiating a multitude of safety-related programmes and activi- ties outside the work place. The goals of SCOPA are many. Among the objectives of the organization: * To make the community a safe place to live, work and play. * To reduce work-related injuries in the Ajax -Pickering area by 20 per cent in the first year. * Promote the awareness of safety as an issue to our citizens, industry, business and students. * Create a community that is recognized for being safe. * Establish and maintain an effective data base regarding injuries and their causes to develop prevention programs. The SCIP program was launched in Waterloo and Brockville two years ago which, through the Workers Compensation Board. provides financial incentives to small busi- nesses for reducing accidents and injuries through a variety of programs. In Ontario, the SCIP program extends to a number of communities such as Sar- nia, Kingston, Smith Falls and Peterbor- ough. In order to be eligible for SCIP, a com- pany must participate in a Safe Workplace Awareness Training Program. The sessions cover leadership, organization of the pre- vention function of the company, hazard identification and assessment and controls (including hazard control, emergency re- sponse and return -to -work programs). Once the program is completed, employers are required to participate in an evaluation of their health and safety program. Through their awareness training and eval- uation results, the employer can develop an action plan to address the shortcomings in their health and safety programs. Larger employers in the community, in- cluding DuPont, participate in a mentoring capacity by providing access to their train- ing programs and by providing experts to assist small firms. The Town of Ajax and Run- nymede Developments owned the 20 -acre parcel of land, but through negotiations among the Town's planning department, Runnymede and Venture World in the spring, a deal was arrived at, again predicat- ed on the new interchange being built, notes Lindeblom. The min- istry announcement of the inter- change was the final piece of the puzzle. In other good news on Ajax's economic front, there continues to be a great deal of interest in the Hwy. 2 commercial corridor. This summer, a large Home Depot out- let will open its doors beside Wal- Mart and the Cineplex Ajax 10 Cinemas. Added to the commercial devel- opment in the Hwy. 2 corridor is a new Canadian Tire outlet will be built at the north-east corner of Pickering Beach Road and Hwy. 2. Lindeblom reports that the Hwy. 2 commercial corridor is "beyond the half -way point of build -out where most of the avail- able land has been utilized for de- velopment. The lone vacant piece of land waiting to be developed is at the northwest corner of Har- wood Avenue and Hwy. 2. First Professional Management, the owner of the land, is currently mulling over commercial options. reports Lindeblom. "Commercial development con- tinues to be very successful along Hwy. 2, he says. In terms of the long-standing vacant Verona Mall site in south Ajax, Lindeblom says the Hi Rise Group met with Ajax planning of- ficials and are in the process of for- mulating a development plan fol the area. As well, the Hi -Rise Group is also planning to move ahead with development plans for the south-west corner of Harwood Avenue and Bayly Street. "They're working on some real- ly interesting proposals. We expect them to come back to us with plans for proceeding;" says Lindeblom. Ajax will also be the home of a new 8,000 -square -foot Mercedes- Benz dealership on Westney Road. just south of Hwy. 401. Currently two new ice pads are under construction at the Ajax Community Centre and will come on stream in September, in time for the new winter sports season. With a total of five ice pads at the town (four at the community centre, one at the Village Arena), the Town will now be able to host major tournaments. "Hopefully, it will allow teams to pitch for major tournaments. The lack of available ice and lack of hotel and entertainment facili- ties prevented them from doing it in the past;' says Lindeblom. Pickering is now home to the new Ontario Provincial Assessment Corporation (OPAL). OPAC has leased 43.000 square feet at the Pickering Corporate Centre. Clearnet agreed to move into Pickering operation into Scarbor- ough earlier than planned to accommodate this new and exciting head office. A new 91,203 -square -foot Canadian Tire store began construction on the 10 -acre site ad- jacent to the Metro Fast Trade Centre and the Horne and Leisure Centre, fronting on to Brock Road. Bill Graham, the owner of the Canadian Tire store at the Hub Plaza, will ex- pand his operation to the new location. The town will see construction begin on a 220,00 -square -foot manufacturing facility on Squires Beach Road, the result of a consolida- tion of two separate companies from Willow - dale and Scarborough. The company is CDA Industries Inc. CDA is North America's kad- ing manufacturer of customized exhibition dis- plays, creative retail display equipment, shop- ping carts and vending machines. They have branches in Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Ed- monton and Vancouver and their new GTA lo- cation will be in Pickering. St. Laurent Packaging is relocating to Pick- ering; they have purchased 10 acrm of land at Copperstone Drive and Silicone Drive and will construct a new 120,00 square foot manufac- turing facility. By the end of 1998, 61 new companies commenced operation in Pickering creating 582 new full-time jobs. Hubbell Canada held a ribbon -cutting and official opening of their expanded operation at Brock Road, increasing their assembly, distrib- ution, sales and management functions from 60,00 to 134,000 squad feet. Peg Perego (Canada) constructed a new 41,000 square -foot warehouse and distribution centre on Granite Court. Yorkville Sound expanded their facihty on Granite Court by 31,000 square feet and provid- ed 30 additional full-time highly skilled jobs. The Minacs Group has leased an additional 6,500 square feet of office space at Ironstone Manor to accommodate date a fourth expansion. Halloway Holdings is currently construct- ing a 23,000 -square -foot addition to the Am- berlea Plaza on Whites Road, north of Hwy. 2. Centrccorp has approval for a 67.388 - square -foot commercial complex on Hwy. 2, just west of Whites Road, on a five -and -a -half acre parcel of land. It will be anchored by a major food retailer. Lenbrook Industries formed a new telecommunications company called AirIQ and continues to play a significant role in the development of our high-tech community. For the last seven years, the Pickering Town Centre has outperformed the growth projected for mall sales and in 1998 consumer traffic in- creased by 33 per cent over 1997. In concert with the 1998 completion of the Famous Play- ers Cinema, the mall underwent interior archi- tectural improvements in the in -filling of the centre court, the purchase of new mail funi- tum and improved interior landscaping. Addi- tional parking was created through the re- design and re -landscaping of the former transit loop. The final touch was the installation on May 6 of the 16 -foot stainless steel sculptue entitled Dmamscape by local artist Edward Falkenberg. The winning piece was selected through a public art competition. The leasing of 28,000 square feet to Ex- treme Fitness and the relocation of Papps Restaurant to the vacated Dakota Bob's site has balanced the necessary mix of tenants which adds to the already successful Home and Leisure Centre. The Petro Canada site at Hwy. 2 will be re- developed. Invar Developments is constructing a 75,000 -square -foot building on Orangebrook Court; leasing is currently under way. Purdue Frederick Pharmaceuticals is in the process of adding a fourth floor to their three- storey office and manufacturing facility on Granite Court. off of the main floor.
