Ajax, Pickering students
spell well at annual
competition
Durham students left their mark at
the 1 Ith Annual Spelling Bee Of Cana-
da finals at Queen's Park last weekend
Five students from throughout the
region finished among the top three
pupils in their age group at the event on
Sunday, which attracted 93 "super
spellers" from across south central On-
tario. the Spelling Bee of Canada re-
ports.
Finalists competed in four age cate-
gones, including the primary division
for children ages six and seven. the ju-
nior division for eight and nine year
olds. the intermediate division for
youth aged 10 to 12 and the senior di-
vision for students aged 13 to 15.
Winners from the Ajax-Pickenng
area included seven-year-old Alanna
Ramoutar, a student at Blaisdale
Montessori Sch(xll in Pickering. who

eight-year-old Tim Zhou. a student at
St. Monica Catholic School in Picker-
ing. who won third prize In the junior
category and Courtney Kelly. a 12 -
year -old student at Frenchman's Bay
Public School in Pickering, who fin-
ished in first place in the intermediate
category.
"I work with these children from the
beginning (of the competition) in Feb-
ruary right through. It's like they're all
mine:' says Marlene Hawtin, organizer
of the Ajax-Pickenng Spelling Bee.
Winners from the Oshawa -Whitby
area included seven-year-old Rebecca
Harrison, who won first place in the
primary category and Jeremy Waxl-
cock. 15• who won top prize in the se-
nior category.
More than 1,600 students participat-
ed in the Spelling Bee this year. with
eight area semi-final competitions
King held across the province prior to
Sunday's event.
First. second and third place winners
in each category took home a number
of prizes, including computers donated
by EDS Canada. software donated by
the Corel Corporation, dictionaries do-
nated by Oxford University Press, tro-
phies donated by Ray's Trophies and
the Spelling Bee of Canada, cash pnzes
donated by CLTJBANK Canada. T-
shirts donated by Canada Post, certifi-
cates from McDonalds and gift pack-
ages donated by Fortune Financial.

Rotary Clubs' Run The Lake event
scheduled for Saturday. June 19 raises
money for the Ajax and Pickering
Health Centre Foundation.
The five -kilometre walk starts at 9
a.m. and the five -km and 10 -km runs
get under way at 9:30. Participants can
enjoy the scenic waterfront of Ajax as
they walk or run along the paved road
and asphalt pathway.
Last year. hundreds of people en-
joyed the well -organized event and
raised more than 35.500 for the hospi-
tal.
Registration fee for the runs is $15
before June 9 and $20 on race day.
Walken can sign up for $10 at any
time.
The first 250 pre -registered partici-
pants receive Gee Run The Lake T-
shirts. In addition, prizes are available
in several categories.
This year's event is sponsored by
McDonald's Restaurants of Ajax.

The provincial government

needs children here, a half dozen
local provincial election candi-
dates agree.
While they differed on how
the Province could find the
money, six candidates from the
three major parties concurred
Tuesday that Queen's Park must
increase funding in Durham.
About 40 parents and people
who work with special -needs
children were present at the elec-
tion forum at the Durham Re-
gion headquarters. However,
candidates who attended the de-
bate were outnumbered by cicc-
tion hopefuls who were ah -writ.

Ecker (Pickering -Ajax -
Uxbridge Riding). Jim Flatten-,
(%%'hitby-Ajax) and Jerry Ouel-
lette (Oshawa). New Democrat,

Residents in north Pickering have rallied their resources.

At Monda%'s meeting. the group of citizens, municipal,
pro%nncial and federal representatives came up with what ap-
pears to to a workable solution to allay some of the concerns
that still exist in relation to an airport designation.
However. much work must still he done on the complex
proposal the group is considering to lay to rest concerns about
what the future might hold fix residents in the sensitive re-
gion.
First. some background. Voters Organized to Cancel The
Airport Lands (VOCAL) came into being hollowing the an-
nouncement last summer h% the federal government it would
officially designate its lards here for future airport use. in

checks. adult 'day care' pro-
grams, and in-home respite to
provide a break for caregivers.
Where appropriate, DAC will
usualh refer its own clients or

Durham boys beasts of the east, best of the west at tournaments
The Durham Attack volleyball
club captured the gold medal at the
Canadian Western Midget National
Tournament in Calgary on the Victo-
ria Day lung weekend.
The Durham Attack hays' team.
made up of 15 players aged 14 and 15
from Ajax. Pickering, Whitby and
Oshawa. captured the national title
after winning every match against the
top teams in western Canada.
Forty-three squads, most from
west of Winnipeg, competed at the
western nationals.
The Attack defeated Calgary's
Canuck Red Stuff 15-3. 15-6 in the
gold -medal final.

PICKERING — Strong pitching, timely hit-
ting and stingy defence helped the Pickering Red
Sox major mosquito haseball team capture the rc-
cent Mississauga Majors Spring Tournament.
In the championships. the Red Sox denied the
Guelph Royals the crown by winning 6-3.
Pitcher Mark Phillips tossed a gem. allowing
one run over four -arid -two-thirds mnirgs. David

have been most impressed with his
size as well as his velocity, which runs
from 88 to 91 miles per hour on his
fastball.
"I can throw the ball hard and they
like my potential," says Cozier. "I can j
already throw hard and with better me-
chanics they think they can get me
throwing even harder."
Following the draft, Cozier says he
plans to play in either rookie ball or
short -season Gass 'A' ball with an af-
filiate of the team which drafts him this
week.

PICKERING — The Pickering Phantoms

Major Junior 'A' Roller Hockey League contests.
The Phantoms most recently downed the Vaugh-

Len Vetelli paced the Phantoms with a five -goal,
four -assist performance. New linemate Steve
Tabarro was almost as effective. scoring three goals
and adding four assists. Depesh Parma chipped in
with three goals. Mike Pratt added a goal and three
assists. while Glen Bowman had a goal and an as-
sist.
The Pickering squad was buoyed by a strong
goaltending performance by 15 -year-old Ryan
Bosak. who was called up for the Vaughan con-
test -
The Phantoms eked out a 5-4 victory over the
visiting Durham Devils at the Pickering Recreation
Complex last Thursday. With the score tied 4-4 in
the last minute, the Phantoms gut the game winner
with 23 seconds remaining.
Scoring were Bowman with three goals and an
assist. Parma with a goal and an assist and Tabarru
with a single marker.
In their home opener on May 20. the Phantoms
were blasted 17-9 by the Brampton Warriors at the
complex. Tabarto led the way with three goals and
two assists. Matt McDonald scored one goal and
added two assists. Brent Chandler. Pat Elder, Joe
Kelly and Ryan Mcllrath each scored once.
Phantoms' head coach Dave Wilkinson notes the
team has come together quickly and appears to be
gelling into an offensively potent squad.
'-Other than the opening -night jitters. I'm happy
with the make-up of the team;' says Wilkinson.
The team plays the Toronto Tigers tonight.

edy club strives at raise $7,500 to
help pay for medical treatment for
the nine-year-old Whithy boy

him in coma for five days and re-
sulted in severe brain injuries.
