Pickering man celebrates lottery win
PICKERING — Pickering
has a new millionaire.
Jerzy Szpytko, 42, was the
winner of the $1,145,272 jackpot
in the May 15 Lotto 6/49 draw.
Mr. Szpytko, a construction
subcontractor, began celebrating
immediately after checking the
numbers on his winning ticket at
the store.
"I started dancing," says Mr.
Szpytko. "My wife thought I was
crazy.-

Provincial election candidates
for the three major parties in
Pickering -Ajax -Uxbridge Riding
agree on one thing — there's no
need for an airport in north Pick-
ering.
Progressive Conservative
Janet Ecker, Liberal Dave Ryan
and New Democrat Jim Wiseman
all said an airport shouldn't be
built in Pickering during a tele-
vised debate Thursday night.
The only candidate who didn't
come out unequivocally against
an airport was the Green Party's
Chris Pennington. "I don't want
to say you can't have one."
A full Environmental Assess-
ment would have to be conducted
and extensive public input gath-
ered before an airport is built, he
added.
Ms. Ecker said there's no need
for an airport here because
there's plenty of capacity at Pear -

According to an interview in the
National Post, Harris said, "... it's
clear to us that as we revitalize
nuclear... those assets will be more
valuable, they'll be worth more."
This is wrong.
The Harris government has con-
tinued to ignore calls for full public
disclosure and a full assessment.

Mpps, public school board trade jabs over education funding

Inequality in the
Province's funding formula
has left Durham's public
school board facing a -stag-
gering shortfall" and forced it
to alter special education pro-
grams this year, says the
board chairman.
"I believe we are grossly
under -funded;' says Durham
District School Board chair-
man Doug Ross. "There is no
equality in what we arc re-
ceiving here in Durham"
However, some local
MPPs claim the board isn't
placing a priority on special
education programs and
"We think they need to be
audited;' says Jim Flaherty,
Durham Centre MPP. "The
figures we're getting from
(board staff) are all over the
place... we're going to have to
send in the Management
Board to straighten out what
they're doing, or not doing.
"What I see is bureaucrats
dealing with union lead-
ers. --making deals that pick
the packets of special educa-
tion;" Mr. Flaherty adds. He
believes the board is chang-
ing its special education pro-
grams because it spent mil-
lions to increase preparation
time for elementary teachers.

Students cast 28 votes for Tory Jim

vanni and 16 for New Democrat Betty
Ann Craig.

consider such other business as properly comes before the
meeting.

to the Annual General Meeting relate to the following
