Kosovars call Canada their
home away from home
It was a trip they'll never for-
get.
Ajax -Pickering News Adver-
tiser reporter Jane McDonald and
Chief Photographer Walter Pas-
sarella witnessed history in the

Base Trenton to report on the ar-
rival of Kosovar refugees into
Canada.
Having served in the Canadian
military herself, Ms. McDonald
was familiar with the ways of the
Canadian Forces, but reports it
wasn't easy to arrange the trip to
the base.
Inundated by requests from
the media to meet with refugees
at CFB Trenton, it proved diffi-
cult to get through to the Canadi-
an Forces public affairs officers
on the phone.
The order from Ottawa to the
military was to protect the al-
ready traumatized refugees from
being overwhelmed by media in-
terest.
Accordingly, reporters and
photographers were roped off in a
designated area from which pho-
tos could be taken. Mr. Passarella
was thankful he'd taken along a
telephoto lens.
Checkpoint to checkpoint,
from headquarters staff to recep-
tion centre duty personnel, Ms.
McDonald found herself relying
on her military background to
talk her way in.
She and Mr. Passarella found
Lieutenant Bruce Clayton of the
Oshawa Regiment, and also man-
aged to snap images of Ajax resi-
dent Rory Feeley. (pictured
above).
Finally, they took another
half-hour drive east to CFD
Mountainview to meet the
refugees and more Ontario Regi-
ment members.
Their story and photos appear
on pages 8 and 9 of today's News
Advertiser.

PICKERING — Maple Ridge
residents want Pickering Hydro to
spend an extra S I million to bury
power lines the utility was planning
to transfer from Kingston Road and
place above ground in the hydro
corridor that borders their neigh-
bourhood.
That was the message about 25
people from the area brought to
hydro commissioners and area
councillors at a public meeting on
the issue held Wednesday night at
Town hall. They claimed more
would have come if they weren't
tired of and frustrated with fighting
the plan.
"Don't transport the problem
from one area to the other:' said
Maple Ridge resident Bill Alexan-
der in reference to the proposed
above -ground transfer. "I don't un-
derstand why this would be an ac-
ceptable option. We think this is not
consistent with beautification of the
downtown, beautification of the wa-
terfront and getting rid of dumps"

Parents, teachers scolded at public forum

Parents, teachers and community
members who care about education are
up against some "serious issues" re-
garding education funding and the im-
portance being placed on technology
in Canada's schools, says author
Heather-jane Robertson.
The Ottawa resident spoke with ed-
ucators and parents in Whitby Thurs-
day during the second in a series of
three education forums sponsored by
the Concerned Citizens of Durham
and the Durham Region Coalition for
Social Justice.
"We tend to think of education
more when we're losing the institution
than when we're not;" she told the
crowd of approximately 50 people
gathered at St. Andrew's Presbyterian
Church.
"If you're going to take something
away from people, you have to con-
vince them it's not worth much.-

ents during the forum, which also pre-
sented local provincial candidates with
an opportunity to talk about their edu-
cation platforms.
Organizers of Thursday's forum in-
vited all of the candidates running for
election in Durham to participate in
the event.
But, Betty Ann Craig, New Democ-
rat candidate for Whitby -Ajax; Aldo
Di Giovanni, Liberal candidate for
Whitby -Ajax and Jim Wiseman,*New
Democrat candidate for Pickering -
Ajax -Uxbridge, were the only candi-
dates who showed.
Meanwhile, Ms. Robertson said the
-reduced spending in education has to
do with a rather scary kind of global-
ization (that's seeing) knowledge
workers become a smaller percentage
of the population"
She notes increasing tuition rates
and decreased funding for postsec-
ondary education "is a very wise poli-
cy if you're trying to educate fewer
people."

about what she refers to as the "paren-
tocracy "
She said schools have become the

ents," noting there's a danger in that
because people who don't have chiil-
dren in the system are not encouraged

Patrice Gibson Kirby says that date

election.
Ms. Gibson Kirby says she's hope-
ful more parents will turn out for the
third forum, noting the majority of
those in the audience Thursday were
teachers.
"We're trying to reach the uncon-
verted. To present all sides of the is-
sues;" she said.

Family court clinic
seeks board members
Nominees are being sought to serve on the board of di-
rectors of the Durham Family Court Clinic.
The non-profit agency, serving the region for 19 years,
provides clinical assessment services to children and
families before the courts, as well as clinical services to
high-risk young offenders. It's a member of the Young
Offender Management Council.
Candidates should be pro -active planners with strate-
gic and creative thinking, and have a strong commitment
to developing a more nurturing community for children.
Nominees should be willing to active!y participate in de-
veloping ideas and to devoting time to fund-raising activ-
ities.
Anyone interested should be over 18 years of age, a
resident of Durham Region and reflect the diversity of the
community. The board meets monthly, with additional
committee work each month. The term of office is two
years.
Interested candidates should call 436-6754 between
8:30 am. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday to get a nom-
ination form. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 14.

our hopes and dreams in this little tool
we will have made some very serious
mistakes.
"It's interesting how we can think
that technology can solve deep in-
tractable problems," she added, noting
"the problem here is techno-lust. Un-
less we deal with the techno-lust we're
not going to get at the other stuff."
,She also encouraged parents to "get

ing ... and the baggage that goes along
with it."

Month delay just allowed us
more time to prepare for refugees
It took a while to sink in, but finally
NATO members have realized Slobo-
dan Milosevic and the Serbian army
are not going anywhere soon. All the
bombing and threats in the world have
not changed the situation appreciably
in Kosovo.
The hope the Serbs would withdraw
and would, therefore, pave the way for
resettlement of displaced Kosovar
refugees was the reason for the one-
month delay in bringing 5.000 refugees
to Canada. NATO members felt that
moving the refugees too quickly to safe
countries in Europe and North America
would be an admission to the Serbs
their goal of ethnic cleansing had been
a success. While nobody's conceding
anything yet, the suffering of refugees
in overcrowded tent camps in Macedo-
nia and Albania is no longer accept-
able. Finally now, by the daily plane-
load, the refugees are on their way.
There are five members of the Os-
hawa -based Ontario regiment working
at CFB Trenton in anticipation of the
arrival of several thousand refugees.
Lieutenants Bruce Clayton and Clay
Harnum, corporals Trevor Ackland and
Scan Sitaram and Trooper Rory Feeley
are working with hundreds of other
personnel in Trenton to take in the be-
leaguered refugees who've been living
for the past weeks and months in the
tent villages.
The first 248 refugees came in this
past Tuesday, with more flying in
Wednesday to Nova Scotia's CFB
Greenwood and a further planeload
going to Nova Scotia on Friday. Every
attempt is being made to link up arriv-
ing refugees with family members al-
ready in Canada. Over the next few
weeks the process of registering, pro-
viding physical examinations and or-
ganizing where refugees will locate
will be done at each of the bases. While
it's believed most refugees will eventu-
ally want to go back to their homeland,
the government will allow those who
wish to remain in Canada to do so.
In the meantime, the federal gov-
ernment through the Citizenship and
Immigration Canada (CIC) is taking in
all offers of assistance from individuals
from across the country. If you want to
volunteer your help, call the CIC at 1-
888-242-2100. Leave your name, ad-
dress, phone number and the type of
assistance you are willing to provide. If
you wish to provide donations for hu-
manitarian aid overseas call the Red
Cross at 1-800-418-1111.

To the editor:
I'm writing to express my con-
cern about punks throwing eggs at
people's homes in the Bay Ridges
area and elsewhere. How sad it was
and is to see aging seniors on
Cortez Avenue scraping hardened
eggs off their hones as they have

The people who run in elections to get
their message out and in the process
collect a few hundred votes. The
Communists, the Greens, the Family
Heritage Party, the Canada Common-
wealth Party.
The provincial election campaign
is only a few days old - officially, that
is. But, Mike Harris and his Progres-
sive Conservatives have been running
for re-election for months. For that
matter, the Liberals and New Democ-
ratic Party have been equally busy re-
leasing their platforms, attacking the
Tories and making election promises.
The three main parties have selected
local candidates and campaign signs
was up within hours of the election
call.
But, obviously caught unaware, the
'other' parties, the ones you usually
only hear about at election time,
haven't picked their candidates.
Maybe they're going to be rallying the
troops in the next few days and find
someone to carry the banner into bat-
tle, and into sure defeat.
A fringe candidate is a noble sort. A
true democrat, one who uses the elec-
tion process to speak his mind, tell us

candidate is a passionate sort. He
would have to be considering the beat-

It's also been my experience that a
fringe candidate knows he doesn't
have much of a chance and only runs
a cursory campaign. The fringe fellow
usually doesn't live in the riding he's
running in, doesn't know any of the
local issues, and may not know where
the riding is. In fact, in the 1993 feder-
al election campaign here, one of the
fringe candidates running in Ontario
Riding lived in Ottawa. He didn't do
too well.
We shouldn't pity the fringe candi-
date. We should praise him. He's giv-
ing it the old college try, knowing he
has no chance. Yet, there he is, at the
nit -candidates- spreading dee
gospel according to him.
There's one thing a fringe candi-
date has over the people who run for
the mainstream parties. The fringe guy
doesn't need some binder detailing the
party platform, telling him what to say
or think. The fringe candidate knows
this stuff, because he really believes it,
more than likely lives it. He probably
had a hand in writing the party plat-
form.
The big problem with fringe parties
is they are usually one -issue groups.
Greens are environmentalists, the
Family Heritage Party is for religion
and family, the Communists are for
world domination.
Here in the Western world at dK
end of the millennium, it's got to be
hard being a commie. Talk about an
uphill battle.
However, out there somewhere,
there's a commie or a Green or what-
ever mulling over the opportunity to
throw his hat in the ring and dream of
victory, if people would only listen to
what he has to say.

sive camera at hand, turn off your
lights and shoot from inside your
window; you will get enough
image to convict the perpetrators.

If the guilty parties are caught
and convicted, you can file for fi-
nancial compensation under the
new victims rights law, which in-
cludes damage, labour, aggrava-
tion. etc. And you can claim from
the offenders or their parents.
We must not let these drunken
vandals take over our neighbour-
hood. Please stay up a little later on
Friday and Saturday.

If the past three years are any in-
dication, the fourth annual 1999
Pickering Town Centre Mayors'
Charity Golf Classic is destined to
be another hit for the Ajax and Pick-
ering Health Centre.
Dubbed Durham's premier char-
ity golf tournament, the Chanty
Classic has raised in excess of
`280,500 for the health centre, for-
merly known as Ajax -Pickering
General Hospital. This year, orga-
nvers of the Classic are hoping to
eclipse the whopping $112,000
raised for the hospital last year.
The 1999 edition is at Cherry
I)()wns Golf and Country Club in
nt)rth Pickering Thursday, Sept. 16.
Once again this year, the Picker-
ing Town Centre, the Ajax -Picker -
ng News Advertiser, the Royal
Bank Financial Group and Cherry
Downs Golf and Country Club are
major corporate sponsors of the
Mayors' Chanty Golf Classic.
Proceeds from this year's tourna-
ment will help purchase a CT
(Computenzed Tomography) scan-
ner for the hospital. A CT scan is a
sophisticated diagnostic test that
produces a high-quality computer-
generated image of the inside of the
body. The kick-off for this year's
Mayor's Chanty Classic Nas hosted
at Cheng Downs Tuesday after-

Durham students gather for leadership program to learn racial tolerance

Armed with action plans to
fight racism in their schools,
Catholic elementary students are
planning to tell their peers that
"making fun of people isn't right"
as they aim to raise awareness
about equity among pupils in
Durham.
More than 80 students from 13
schools within the Durham
Catholic District School Board
took part in Spirit 1999, a two-day
student leadership and anti -racism
program held at Heydenshore
Pavilion in Whitby May 3 and 4.
The fourth annual event fo-
cused on educating pupils in diver-
sity and providing students with an
opportunity to participate in role-
playing activities designed to in-
crease their awareness of equity is-
sues and a chance to develop ac-
tion plans to fight racism in their
schools, reports program consul-
tant Mary Adelle Patterson.
"Students are expected to de-
velop a plan of action to take back
to their school to make others
aware of the issues and to become
proactive as leaders in their
schools,,' she said.

A new non-profit corporation
set up by the public board will
handle endowments and enable
the board to establish bursaries
and other programs for teachers
and students, trustees heard
Monday.
In a report to the Durham
District School Board's standing
committee, board director Grant
Yeo told trustees the newly -
formed Durham Learning Foun-
dation will provide a number of
benefits.
"It allows us to do some of
the things boards can't do in
terms of generating dollars" Mr.
Yeo said at the meeting, explain-
ing the foundation was initiated
because "there are many areas in
which the board may receive
funds from other school boards,
agencies and private sector orga-
nizations (for) training and staff
development, curriculum re-
source sales, software develop-
ment sales and community edu-
cation '
And, with the learning foun-
dation in place, Mr. Yeo notes the
'income and expenses for such
initiatives will not impact on the
board's annual budget making it
appear that the budget is greater
than it actually is for existing core
programs.-

The public board is working
on a number of "key' areas to de-
velop resources for the new so-
cial sciences curriculum, reports
a board official.
Durham District School
Board superintendent of pro-
grams Bev Freedman told the
standing committee Monday that
board staff are working on sever-
al initiatives to "facilitate the im-
plementation of the elementary
curriculum' in the social sciences
area.
She notes the board recently
hosted a conference entitled
Government and Citizenship in
Ontario Schools, and reports *as
a result of the very positive feed-
back ... and with Bertelsmann
Foundation Grant support; a
team of librarians and facilitators
are developing a 304esson
teaching package to support the
learning expectations for Grade 5
pupils regarding the Canadian
government.
Ms. Freedman also reports
that another team is developing
resources to support the expec-
tations in the Grade 4 medieval
times portion of the new curricu-
lum, while another group of edu-
cators are working on resources
related to Canada and its trading
partners that will benefit Grade 6
pupils when the new curriculum

CFB TRENTON - For almost
a month. Bruce Clayton has waited
for them to come. Then finally, on
Tuesday May 4, the first plane
touched down.
he Oshawa man is a lieu-
tenant in the Ontario Regi-
mcnt (Royal Canadian Ar-
moured Corps) and the people he's
been waiting for have been
through hell.
"We've been here for a long
time," says the 30 -year-old ar-
moured officer. A would prefer
what had to happen for the
refugees to be here on the ground
had not happened, but I do feel we
are actually accomplishing some-
thing. I'm glad things are finally
happening."
The circumstances Lieut. Clay-
ton refers to include the forced ex-
pulsion of ethnic Albanians from
their homeland, the Yugoslavian
province of Kosovo. The refugees
have swelled camps in neighbour-
ing Balkan countries to the point
where humanitarian officials,
specifically the United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees,
requested that Canada give safe
haven to 5,000 Kosovars. The ar-
moured officer has been a member
of the regiment for four years and
is joined in Trenton by four other
members of the Oshawa reserve
unit, along with 53 other reservists
from across Ontario.

Saute Ste. Marie," says Lieut.
Clayton, whose work with the
refugees in Trenton is "open-

Scotia on alternating days since
May 4. At presstime, a third plane
was expected to land at Trenton
yesterday, Saturday, May 8, and if
the scheduled airlift is on track, a
third plane should be landing in
Greenwood today, for a total of six
so far.
The actual location where the
refugees receive medical care, im-
migration processing and where
they sleep and eat is a half hour
drive from the Trenton air base at
Canadian Forces Detachment
Mountainview, a training and stor-
age area. Inside the detachment's
cavernous hangars, Corporal Sean
Sitaram has helped set up row on
row of folding cots.

you're on an exercise
like this. It makes
you realize what
you've got.

"We're working hand-in-hand
with CIC (Citizenship and Immi-
gration Canada) and the (Canadi-
an) Red Cross, explains the 20 -
year -old Durham College student
and part time armoured crewman,
who has been with the Ontario
Regiment, or OntRs, as they are
popularly known, for two -and -a -
half years. "I've been helping set
UP for the refugees coming in. We
set up all the cots in here, approxi-
mately 300. The Red Cross puts
the pillows and blankets on (the
cots), and we set up the (portable)
toilets."
Not exactly glamorous work for
a young military man, who also
volunteered to help in eastern On-
tario during the ice storm last year,
but the corporal finds meaning
here.
"When I walk by the kids and
they're playing around, they come
up and say, 'Hello' or 'Hi,' says Cpl.
Sitaram. "I was happy to come
here and do this. You see the kids'
smiles. It's humbling when you're
on an exercise like this. It makes
you realize what you've got."
Corporal Trevor Ackland also
helped during the 1997 Manitoba
Flood and was there, too, for the
ice storm last year when the Cana-
dian Forces were called on to help.
The 23 -year-old has been with the
OntRs for five years and has been
driving supplies back and forth
from the base to Mountainview
since arriving at Trenton last Sat-
urday (May 1).
"It's nice that I can do stuff like
this through the military," says
Cpl. Ackland. Trooper (an ar-
moured corps term for private)
Rory Feeley, 18, has been assigned
general duties at the safe, clean
and open refuge he is helping to
operate. A Grade 13 student at
Denis O'Connor Catholic High
School in Ajax, this is the first hu-
manitarian mission in his one-year
military career.
"I'm just here to do my job," he
says. "We've been setting up tables
and chairs and modular tents and
filling sand bags." Butthe
greatest task Trooper Feeley has
accomplished is sharing his sense
of play with the refugee children.
As an impromptu game of soccer
begins while a bus awaits to trans-
port a group of exiles to CFB Bor-
den, he makes a difference. And
for a few minutes, a child's laugh-
ter can be heard, the memory of an
ordeal few Canadians can imagine,
temporarily forgotten.
"You're a cool dude now,"
Trooper Feeley says to a little boy
whose baseball cap he's adjusted to
fit backwai;ds. The child seems to
understand and boards the bus to
yet another destination.

The fast refugees from Kosovo began to arrive in Canada last week
as ethnic Albanians corrtirxje to flee the Yugoslavian province. Growing
populations of refugee camps in Macedonia and Abasia threaten to over-
whelm the resources of u►temadonal humanitarian orgaruzations, prompt-
ing the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to ask Canada
April 30, to give refuge to 5,000 of the refugees. (An earlier offer to airlift
refugees to Canada was postponed because it was thought the camps
could cope with the numbers of exiles at the time and because most Koso-
vars were understandably reluctant to be displaced so tar from their home -

Local agencies such as the Salvation Army and the Durham Branch of
the Canadian Red Cross continue to receive generous donations from
area residents. And although the requirement for ciothii g has lessened,
monetary donations are stili needed.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada is keeping track of all offers to
help the Kosovar refugees and anyone wishing to volunteer their help
should phone the CIC's Kosovo Task Force at 1-888-242-2100.
Of the 5,000 expected to arrive in Canada over the next few weeks.
3,000 to 3,500 refugees are scheduled to land at CFB Trenton. The other
1,500 to 2,000 wil touch down at CFB Greenwood in Nova Scotia. In On-
tario, about 1,000 will stay in the Trenton area. Another 1,000 will be trans-
ported to CFB Borden, 500 wit go to CFB Kingston and 500 each to bases
in Petawawa and Meatoi d. Prime Minister Jean Chreben has said he
hopes goes and individuals wd sponsor the refugees the way Viet-
namese boat people were sponsored during the 1970s.

Durham Region farmers find
tax break grows on them

Durham's agricultural sec-
tor will find it one step easier to
put hammer to nail thanks to
the new provincial budget.
The Retail Sales Tax Rebate
on Farm Building Materials
has been made a permanent
program as announced by Fi-
nance Minister Ernie Eves
Tuesday.
Five items have also been
classified as provincial sales
tax (PST) exempt for farmers
improving their properties.
They are anti -freeze, calcium
chloride, lubricant oil and
grease, generators and live-
stock weight forms.
"We're happy it's been
made permanent;" says Karen
Yellowlees, of the Durham
Federation of Agriculture. "If
you're purchasing large
amounts (the PST) does add
up." The program was intro-
duced as a temporary measure
in May 1996 as a way of en-
couraging farmers to update
their farm buildings, says Joel
Bagg, of the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs (OMAFRA).
Farmers purchasing con-
struction materials to be used
to enhance their operations
could afterwards apply to the
government to get the eight per
cent PST back from their mate-
rials, he explains.
"With a large quantity of
building materials, (sales taxes)
can add up. But it's a fact it
takes time to go through every-
thing;" says Ms. Yellowlees.
A widely -used program,
the rebate was introduced in
1996 and then extended in
1997 for a year, and again in
1998 for another year. The
most recent extension came in
April 1999, allowing farmers to
take advantage of the break
until March 2000.
More than 8,800 applica-
tions have been received by the
Ministry of -Finance since the
program began, according to
recent ministry statistics. For
more information about the

Durham high school students bridge gap between school, employment
High school students here can take advan-
tage of an internship program designed to
bridge the gap from school to work, trustees
heard Monday.
Vicky Pidgeon, co-ordinator of the; Bridges
Internship Program, and superintendent of op-
erations Doug Wilson, outlined the school -to -
work transition project at the Durham District
School Board's standing committee Monday.
The Bridges program, a pilot project in-
volving the four school boards in and around
Durham Region, `offers a different way for
students to complete their (high school diplo-
ma) and to ease the transition from school to
the world of work;' Mr. Wilson said in his re-
port.
And, starting this fall, students will have a
unique opportunity to work on site building
residential homes under the guidance of certi-
fied journeymen with Fembrook Homes.
"The potential exists to be at the Fernbrook
location for 10 years," Mr. Wilson reports,
noting the Bridges program provides opportu-
nitics for students to be hired for summer em-
ployment or full-time employment after high
school.
The program includes specialized curricu-
lum for students in Grades 10 through 12 with
the in -class portion of the program focusing
on employability skills.
The program includes a half-day co-opera-
tive education placement for pupils during
one semester in Grade 11, followed by a full-
day work placement in Grade 12 that offers
pupils hands-on experience.
According to the beard. internship oppor-
tunities are available in a variety of areas in-
cluding construction, hospitality, child care,
electronics, metal fabrication, auto parts, en-
trepreneurship and small businesses.

Yoga is painless exercise

For many people, staying in
shape is synom•mous with pain.
Some people force themselves
through'punishing routines in order
to keep themselves "in shape". At
the end of their workout, they're
drained, they're dripping with
sweat, and their knees hurt.
But... they've "burned off" the calo-
ries in Tuesday's cheesecake, or in
saturday's lavish dinner with wines,
latices and desserts.
They continue with their old
routines even when their knees are
screaming and their muscles are stiff
and sore. At some point, we have to
ask. "If it's good for me, why does it
hurt so much?"
Yoga shows us that exercise does
not have to be painful. In fact, from
the yogic point of view, pain is an
indication that you are doing some
damage to your body, not that you
are doing something beneficial.
A regular yoga program will
stretch you and make you strong.
And it will do much more besides.
Yoga does not target selected body
areas with a "seek and destroy" atti-
tude. Instead, it brings balance, over
time, to the entire body, so that
whatever areas are out of proportion
will become more proportional nat-
urally. But this is almost a by-prod-
uct or regular practice. There are
sorne other very good reasons to try

of your yoga session! Rejuvenated,
uplifted, balanced, relaxed... these
are the words participants common-
ly use to describe how the feel after
yoga class.
But will you lose weight? It
depends on how often you practice,
the intensity of your practice, and, of
course, on what you eat. In yoga, it's
all a matter of balance.
GETTING STARTED: Yoga can
be done by people of all ages, both
men and women, regardless of
weight, shape, or experience. It's
best to start in an beginner's or gen-
tie class to learn the basic poses and
breathing techniques. After you feel
comfortable with the basics, then try
a moderate -to -advanced class to
challenge yourself and find your
desired level of intensity. regular

Finding relief from seasonal
and respiratory allergies
There are two main types of respiratory allergies.
People with seasonal allergies react to things such as

Pickering skaters rocket to glory
PICKERING — The Pickering Figure
Skating Club's synchronized teams had an-
other fine season.
This year, two synchronized (formerly
precision) skating teams were iced by the
club. The juvenile Mini Ice Rockets used the
theme Cheerleaders for the season and the
junior recreational Ice Rockets adopted the
theme of Fitness for the '90s during the year.
Both teams, with members ranging in age
from eight to 19 years, competed at various
events in Fergus. Brantford, Peterborough,
Newmarket and Thornhill this season. Each
squad won a bronze medal for its efforts.

Skating for the Ice Rockets were Melissa

Lisa Downer, Nadia Mohammed, Therese

Mitchell, Erinn Tushingham, Patricia Par-
tridge, Rachel Humphries, Pamela Spencer,
Andrea Furo, Melissa Siddall, Crystal Mat-
zos and Kristine Arbuckle.
The teams were coached by Kathy Miller
and managed by Joan Wallace and Dale Van
Dyk. The treasurer is Betty Blandisi.
Synchronized skating is growing in pop-
ularity and may become an Olympic sport in
the near future.
The sport provides an opportunity for
skaters to improve their skills and abilities,
while enjoying a social and team atmos-
phere.
This past year, the Ice Rockets and the
Mini Ice Rockets held regular practices two
to three times on and off the ice each week
as well as regular social events.
The Pickering club invites all interested
skaters to its tryouts in September.

soaped semi -private 18 hole golf course. The dub is located on Brock
Rd. N. in Claremont and features many ponds, trees, hills and val-
leys as well as lush greens and sculptured fairways. It's a very chal-
lenging course where water comes into play on IS holes. If you want
to stay dose to par you ll need a great deal of shot making.
4 Seasons Country Club features an indoor banquet room that
can seat up to 125 and an outdoor area that seats up to 150 under a
canopy. There is also a pro shop and lounge at the
dub as well as a sunroorn and outdoor patio. The
11th hole is very challenging with a water hazard
to the left of the green and sand traps in front and
back.

Cameron says you'll need a 7 to 9 iron to get it up

Durham rowers make
waves at first event
of the season
Jennifer Marsh won gold in
women's singles as the Durham Row-
ing Club competed in its first event of
the season, the Kingston Annual Invi-
tational Rowing Regatta last Sunday.
Keely Smith earned silver in
% omen's singles.
The international legend for the
types of rowing shells raced is 8+, the
largest shell in the rowing fleet, eight
rowers and a coxswain (pronounced
L:ox'n); 4+, four rowers and a
:uxswain.
Those rowers have one oar each
and are called sweepers. A single
,,culler is Ix (a rower who uses two
cars is called a sculler).
