Durham schools
Three more incidents involving
gun threats made by high school
students have been reported in
Durham following a similar one in
Ajax Friday.
Durham Regional Police said
officers responded to schools in
Ajax, Newcastle. Oshawa and
Port Perry on regarding similar,
but unrelated reports. A 15 -year-
old Oshawa boy has been sus-
pended from classes and a 15 -
year -old Newcastle boy has been
charged with making death threats
following the local in the wake of
the Colorado and Alberta shoot-
ings.
Sergeant Jim Grimley said in
one incident police were called to
Clarke High School in Clarington
after a male student was over-
heard saying he -wanted to re-
enact the Colorado shooting:'
where 12 students and a teacher
were shot dead at school by two
students who then committed sui-
cide.
Police investigating the New-
castle incident were told the 15 -
year -old student "made threats

He was charged with four
counts of threatening death.
Meanwhile, a Grade R student
at Gertrude Colpus public ele-
mentary school in Oshawa has
been suspended a "minimum of
16 days" for allegedly claiming to
have a -hit list:' said Sgt. Grimley,
adding there were comments
about a Colorado copycat shoot-
ing but no direct threats.
And a student at Prince Albert
Public School on Old Simcoe
Road in Port Perry was also spo-
ken to and cautioned by police for
allegedly talking about "going to
school with a glut to shoot himself
and others; Sgt. Grimley said.

PICKERING — Town coun-
cillors have put off staking out a
final position on a major redevel-
opment proposal for the Metro
East Trade Centre (METC) that
could see the establishment of 'big
box' retail outlets on the site.
Council's executive committee
voted last week to defer consider-
ation of a rezoning application for
the redevelopment. It was to be
decided last night by Pickering
councillors, after the News Adver-
tiser's deadline.
Town staff support the redcvel-
opment proposal as a whole but
are recommending against certain
aspects of it.
.'The concern has been
throughout the process there may
be commercial uses at a scale that
would be in conflict with the Pick-

St. Mary school crowding
solutions proposed
Pickering trustee seeks addition to school
PICKERING — A Pickering
trustee wants the Durham Catholic
District School Board to examine
putting an addition onto St. Mary
Catholic Secondary School to alleviate
overcrowding at the Whites Road facil-
ity.
Pickering Trustee lim McCafferty
reports he plans to ask staff next week
to prepare a report, on the feasibility of
adding a third floor to the school,
building a two-storey addition where
the portables are currently located. or
replacing some of the portables with
port-a-paks — a grouping of four to
six classrooms with a central hallway
that's detached from the main school.
"To add a port-a-pak would be great
off the bat:' says Trustee McCafferty,
noting that option would provide stu-
dents with classrooms and another lo-
cation to eat lunch, which "would alle-
viate some of the overcrowding in the
(cafeteria)".
A report to trustees last month list-
ed a number of options that could be
considered to alleviate the cafeteria
overcrowding, including increasing the
number of lunch periods or decentral-
izing the lunch room arca so students
can cat in regular classrooms.
Trustee McCafferty also notes an
addition would eliminate some of the
school's portables.
He reports there are currently 30
portables on site, with another eight to
be added this September. And, al-
though the board's projections esti-
mate that number will eventually drop
to 14, Trustee McCafferty contends
that's still 14 portables "too many".
The school's current enrolment is
approximately 1,750 students. And,
board officials report that number is
expected to climb to 1,924 pupils next
year and up to 1,932 the following
year.

Gentry wants to establish
a centre for large format re-
tailing on the METC site,
including a food store, retail
warehouses, and other,
smaller "ancillary" retail
outlets in addition to the
trade centre uses currently
permitted. About 9,000
square metres of the
27,000 -square -metre exist-
ing building would continue
to be used for a trade centre,
with the rest and a possible
expansion of about 13,000
square metres to be used for
retail stores, for a total of
31,000 square metres of re-
tail space. For various rea-
sons, several aspects of the
application and the official
plan arnendubM required
for the de nt have
been appea.115 the OMB
by some major food store
chains, as well as Gentra.
And the Pickering Town
Centre is also a participant
in the OMB process on the
rezoning issue.
However, according to
Geoffrey McKnight of the
Town planning department,
the food store chains and
the applicant have reached a
compromise under which
the chains would not oppose
the application if a food
store is prohibited from op-
erating on the site for four
years. Negotiations on other
issues are still continuing
between all the parties.
Central to the discus-
sions is the size of stores to
be allowed under the rezon-
ing. Gentra wants to be able
to have a 9,000 -square
metre or larger discount de-
partment store; a 5,000 -
square -metre or larger food
store; a minimum size of
1,000 square metres for
other retail stores; and
stores as small as 300
square metres.
Mr. McKnight notes
there is no disagreement in
principal between the plan-
ning department and Gentra
over having the big box
stores to establish what is
often referred to as a 'power
centre' on the site.
"The trade centre site in
our view is underutilized,"
he explains. "It's been iden-
tified by a number of mar-
ket consultants that a power
centre is a use that fits well
on this site"
Board superintendent of student ser-
vices Teresa Freedman said the
board's social workers and youth
counsellors were touching base with
at -risk students and school administra-
tors to determine whether any students
had been affected by the shootings.
And, superintendent David Visser said
the school administration and police
"worked very efficiently and proac-
tively" to look into the matter at
DO' C.
Neither Durham nor Clarinvon
school board officials could be
reached for comment.

A. soldier's story
Former Pickering resident serves with British forces in war-torn Balkans
BY LINDA WHITE
Staff Writer
For a soldier who has seen first-
hand the atrocities of war, helping
"Kosovo refugees fight disease and
starvation is a rewarding experi-
ence and brings with it a certain
peace of mind.
"When you see these people,
it's not hard to be convinced that
(the North Atlantic Treaty Organi-
zation) is doing the right thing,"
maintains Ian Cameron, a former
Pickering student now serving
with the British Army.
"You go in there with a clear
conscience," admits the Dunbarton
High School and Frenchman's Bay
Public School graduate who has
been visiting family and friends in
the Toronto area on a two-week
rest and relaxation leave.
And while the 26 -year-old "can
understand some of the deep-root-
ed problems the (Serbians) have
with the Albanians and the prob-
lems Albanians have had with
some of their neighbours... their
way of dealing with it is not the
right way."
While growing up, Lieutenant
Cameron belonged to the army
cadets at Pickering High School
and was in the militia in Oshawa
and Toronto. He credits those ex-
pcnenccs and his Big Brother Tom
Hart, who is with Durham Region-
al Police, with helping him get to
where he is.
After graduating from high
school, he studied political science
at the University of Western On-
tario in London. But he got "bored
with school and wanted to travel a
bit", and landed in Britain in 1995.
A British citizen — his mother,
who lives in Pickering, is from
England and his father, now in St.
Catharines, is from Scotland —
Lieut. Cameron joined the British
Army "on a spur of the moment"
and hasn't looked back since.
His first posting was in the
largely Catholic town of London-
derry in Northern Ireland on an op-
erational tour where he saw every-
thing from minor car accidents to

Jan Cameron, a former Pickering resident who attended Dunbar -

week during a rest and recreation leave from the British Army. He
is currently serving in the Balkans as part of a force in Macedo-
nia and has seen the thousands of refugees who have fled Kosovo
during the latest military conflict in the region.
riots and sectarian violence.
"I was in a western European
country ... where they had modern
stores and electronics boutiques,
yet the streets were patrolled by
armed soldiers," Lieut. Cameron
recalls. "It was quite strange really.
People walk through you like
you're not there because they're
just used to it...Most people were
quite friendly."
At the time, his hometown of
Pickering "seemed like a long way
away. But it was a good learning
experience. It made me appreciate
what we have and how lucky it is
to be Canadian," concedes Lieut.
Cameron, who may one day return
to Canada.
After Northern Ireland, Lieut.
Cameron spent a year at the Royal
Military Academy Sandhurst and
was commissioned to the regiment
he served in as a soldier — the I st
Battalion the Highlanders
(Seaforth, Gordons, Camerons).
He returned to Northern Ireland
during the Protestant Marching
Protests and served on an emer-
gency tour in County Permanagh,
where his duty was to police a
ceasefire.
At the end of November, Lieut.
Cameron volunteered to serve in
Kosovo and was selected as a pla-
toon commander. After pre -de-
ployment training, he was sent to
Macedonia just three days after
Christmas.
"Our job, up until the bomb-
ngs, started out as a NATO extrac-
lion force." explains Lieut.
Cameron. The job was a "quick re-
action force that spent just a few
minutes on the ground extracting
(Organization for Security and Co-
operation in Europe)" personnel
who were to monitor a ceasefire.
Immediately before his two-
week leave, Lieut. Cameron and
his troops were "wearing two
hats", as they were working in a
refugee camp, putting up tents.
guarding trucks and distributing
food.
"It felt very rewarding," says
Lieut. Cameron, who was struck
by the similarities of the Kosovo
children and those in Canada.
"They're just like the kids you see
here. They wear the same clothes,
with Nike and Adidas labels. They
aren't like the faces you see in
Africa... People have their (cellu-
lar) phones with them.
'To see that they've lost every-
thing they've worked so hard for is
tough. They're reduced to what
they can carry, if they haven't been
robbed by the Serbs..'
Lieut. Cameron was to return to
his duties Monday night, after
boarding a plane in Toronto. "It
will be a shock," admits Lieut.
Cameron, who would be pleased
to hear from area residents.

Durham steel maker cleans up its environmental image
David Camozzi feels the sting
every year when Co -Steel Lasco
makes the list of the biggest pol-
luters in Canada
"In the past few years when
these reports carte out, we'd feel
like going and hiding under the
rug. It's like our annual root
canal," said Mr. Camozzi, general
manager of the Whitby steelmak-
ing plant.
Co -Steel Lasco is fighting an
environmental image problem de-
spite being regarded as the biggest
recycler in the country, turning
more than 300,000 old cars and
other scrap into new steel each
year.
But it also produces an enor-
mous amount of waste. The plant
generates 6,000 tonnes of zinc
each year contained in 20,000
tonnes of electric arc furnace dust,
a by-product of the steel -making
Mite plant produces more zinc
dust, a hazardous industrial waste
created during the melting of gal-
vanized steel, than any other facil-
ity in Canada. That puts Co -Steel
Lasco, owned by Co -Steel Inc., at
the top of Environment Canada's
National Pollutant Release Inven-
tory, an annual compilation of in-
dustrial polluters across the coun-
try.
Mr. Camozzi argued it's an un-
fair ranking. The furnace dust is
hauled away for disposal at On-
tario's only hazardous industrial
waste dump.
Dumping in a landfill site is
considered a `transfer' according
to the federal release inventory,
but when it comes to the rankings,
Co -Steell Lasco is compared with
other companies that release most
of their pollution into the air and
water.
The plant has an elaborate com-
plex to gather and bag the dust
sucked from the furnace by mas-
sive exhaust fans.
"We don't put it into the air,"
Mr. Camozzi said.
"When this plant was first built
in 1964, the sky was orange (with
pollution) whenever they made
steel," added plant operations
manager Bernie Lewis.
. Starting this summer however,
the company will be sending its
furnace dust to a recycling facility
in Pennsylvania instead of the haz-
ardous waste landfill site near Sar-
nia, Mr. Camozzi said.
The company will spend an ad-
ditional $600,000 annually ship-
ping the furnace dust to the United
States compared with the cost of
disposal, he said.
"We're the largest recycler in
Canada and we're tired of being
presented as polluters," Mr.
Camozzi said.

A mother does so much for her family. Whether it's
making dinner, planning a family vacation or just
being there to listen, she's always
giving her all to those she loves.
However, too often, her love and
support are taken for granted.
Don't let this Mother's Day go by
without showing mom how important
she really is. Give her a gift of love
that will touch her heart — give her a
gift of cultured pearls.
Symbols of virtue, wisdom and purity,
cultured pearls represent the true
qualities of a mother. These precious
jewels will be a gift she can treasure
forever, and they'll be a lasting
reminder of love.
Classic enough to endure the test of time. cultured
pearls can fit into every aspect of a mother's bury
lifestyle. Whether going to the grocery store or an
elegant restaurant, she'll always look well-dressed in

pearls.
There are cultured pearl designs to fit every mother's
style and every shopper's budget.
From stud earrings to a beautiful
brooch to a high-quality necklace, a
wide variety of cultured pearl jewelry
is available at local jewelers.
To ensure that mom gets a fine quality
piece, there are several factors to
consider when shopping. First and
foremost, beware of imitations. Like
natural pearls, cultured pearls are
grown in live oysters and will maintain
long-lasting beauty and value.
Imitations, which are often highly
priced to give the illusion of value, are
man-made and have no
intrinsic value. They have a shiny surface,
but lack the deep-seated luster of real
pearls.
Since the quality of cultured pearls can he

detected by the naked eye, it is important to carefully
inspect them before purchasing. Quality is best
judged by luster and cleanliness. If you can see your
reflection clearly on the surface of a pearl, then the
luster is good, and it is a fine -quality pearl. The
foggier the reflection appears to be, the less valuable
that pearl is. Poor -quality pearls tend to look very
white and almost chalky.
Cleanliness refers to the absence of disfiguring spots,
bumps or cracks on the surface of the pearl. Since
cultured pearls are created through nature. it is
extremely rare to find a totally flawless pearl.
However, with low -quality pearls, such flaws are
abundant. Spots, bumps and cracks are not only
unattractive, but they also lower a pearl's value. The
fewer the imperfections on the surface of a pearl, the
more valuable it is.
When selecting cultured pearl jewelry, make sure the
pearls are carefully matched for size, shape, surface
quality, color and luster. Visible variations detract
from both the beauty and the value of the piece.
Help make this Mother's Day one mom will never
forget with a gift of cultured pearl jewelry.

Pickering coach hopes charges Carey home the cup
BY AL RIVE7T
Sports Editor
PICKERING —A Pickering resident will
play a pivotal role for the Ontario representa-
tives at the national championships for tier II
junior hockey which got under way in
Saskatchewan last weekend.
Carey Durant, 32, is in his second year as
an assistant coach of the Bramalea Blues of
the ORA Ontario Provincial Junior 'A' Hock-
ey League. Bramalea will represent the
province in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, site of the
Royal Bank Cup, emblematic of tier II junior
hockey supremacy in Canada.
Even after winning the championship in
the 37 -team Ontario league and capturing the
Dudley Hewitt Cup after sweeping northern
Ontario's Rayside-Balfour Sabrecats to win
the provincial title, the Blues aren't consid-
ered favourites for the Canadian crown. In
fact, no Ontario team has won a national tier
II title before.
Durant says the Blues are out to change re-
cent history.
"We're going into the nationals fresh and
healthy and with some practice under our
belts;' says the assistant to head coach Lind-
say Hofford. "We're prepared mentally for it
too. No tears from Ontario has ever went there
and won, but we've talked to some college
scouts and they say we're one of the better
teams out there.
"But, we'll have to play the same way.
We'll have to play disciplined hockey and use
our speed, smarts and mental toughness
against those teams."
Bramalea will suit up against
Saskatchewan squads from Estewan and York -
ton, and teams from Vernon, B.C. and Char-
kxtetown, P.E.I. at the national showcase. Bra-
malea opened against the Vernon Vipers last
Sunday. Play at the championships continues
until Sunday's final at 1 p.m.
Durant is somewhat fortunate to be in the
running for a national title. At the start of the
season, he was the head coach of the Bow-
manville Eagles in the league's East Confer-
ence. However, differences in opinion with
team management over player recruitment
prompted him to bolt the club and eventually
land back with the Blues for his second go -
round as an assistant coach.
It's been a magical season for the Blues
who defeated conference rival Milton Mer-
chants to emerge with the league title.
"It really has been unbelievable;' says Du-
rant. '"To beat out 37 teams to be the best in
our league is a big accomplishment. In the
playoffs we had to beat Milton not once, but
twice and that's also a big accomplishment:'
Durant feels privileged to have worked for
Hofford, who was honoured as the West Con-
ference's coach of the year.
"I really like it. It's been a lot of fun" says
Durant, who's coached in various Metro
Toronto Hockey League organizations before
moving up to junior hockey. "I met (Hofford)
two years ago and I had heard a lot of good
things about him. I've learned more in two
years here than in the past 10 years elsewhere.
He's the best in the OHA by far"
The Bluespath to the national charttpi-
onship went through Pickering as they dumped
the Panthers in four consecutive games in the
best -of -seven league semi-final series. AI -
though Durant admits that series wasn't as
emotional as those with league rival Milton, it
felt good to beat the hometown panthers.
"We don't see Pickering all (regular sea-
son), so there was a sense that we wanted to
beat them because I'm from Pickering. (Pick-
ering) was a good team, but maybe they

weren't peaking at the right time. At that time,
we were on fire. Pickering is probably a better
team than what they showed us"
Durant hopes to one day become a head
coach in the OHA but, for now, he's content to
serve in his assistant's role.
"I know I can be a head coach. but I'm sure
that I'll get my chance"
But, with a wife and child, Durant is pining
for the off-season to spend time with family
after a gruelling regular season and playoff
schedule.
"I think I'm going to have to go to bed for
a year after this"

AJAX — After a productive sea-
son last year, the Ajax 'AAA' senior
baseball team has even bigger plans
for the 1999 Eastern Ontario Base-
ball Association campaign that gets
under way next weekend.
The Ajax seniors, who finished
third overall in the EOBA senior
loop and were finalists in the league
championship last year, are hoping
for even bigger and better things this
season.
"We plan on winning the EOBA
this year. That's definitely a goal. An
even higher goal is to play in the On-
tario championships;" says Warren
Houston, shortstop with the Ajax se-
niors the past three seasons.
The Ajax seniors will open the
EOBA season at home against the
Scarborough Sun Devils at the Ajax
Community Centre Friday, May 14
at R P.M.
Pitching, which had been a little
weak last season, is now being seen
as the strength of the club, reports
Houston. The team has been bol-
stered by the addition of John Fred-
erick, a right-handed hurler who
played with the Pickering Red Sox
junior squad last season. He'll be
aided by fellow righthanders Pat
Middleton and the team's ace Shane
Moore, who's also a catcher.
The club, which features players
from Ajax and Pickering, will also
be buoyed by strong defence, espe-
cially in the outfield which is an-
chored by returning centre fielder
Dean Kirkcy and left fielder Paul
Kular, who played with the Ajax ju-
nior squad last season.
The Ajax seniors should continue
to be a strong hitting club, which
was able to generate 10 to 15 runs a
Same last season, says Houston. The
team will look to Moore to be the
dominant hitter as he was last year.
The club has been practising for
the past two months, reports Hous-
ton. So far in the pre -season, the
team has posted a perfect 3-0 record,
defeating Scarborough twice by
scores of 4-2 and 14-2, and defeating
the Ajax junior team 5-1.
The Ajacians will end pre -season
play with a contest against Markham
this Saturday.
The club is looking for sponsor-
ships for the coming season, as it is
currently funded entirely by the
players. If you or your business can
help, call team manager Garnet
Moore at 416-439-7247. _
