Days before she was found dead
with a cord wrapped around her
neck, a tearful Laurie White ex-
pressed fear of being killed by for-
mer boyfriend Jesse Watkins and
told a co-worker he "tried to stran-
glc" her, a court has heard.
Jurors were told Monday the 20 -
year -old Pickering dental assistant
was upset and her face bruised when
she arrived late to work at the Am-
berlea Dental Clinic Oct. 4, 1996.
"She mentioned she had an argu-
ment with Jesse where he tried to
hurt her, kicked her, grabbed her,
and he'd tried to strangle her;' testi-
tied Joanne Solima, who worked
with Ms. White at the Pickering
clinic.
Childhood friend Colleen Pelley,
who had an appointment at the clin-
ic that morning, said Ms. White
"looked like she was crying" when
she arrived.

Teachers win contract
The Durham Catholic
District School Board has
hammered out a contract
with its 400 secondary teach-
ers that will "improve" edu-
cators' workload and restore
a sense of "normalcy" to
high schools here, says board
chairman Mary Ann Martin.
The board and local
members of the Ontario Eng-
lish Catholic Teachers' Asso-
ciation (OECTA) reached an
agreement early Friday fol-
lowing marathon bargaining.
The two sides had been
given 45 days to iron out de-
tails of the department head
structure in secondary
schools for this coming Sep-
tember under an arbitrator's
ruling handed down Jan. 27.
"Both sides worked very
hard to come to an agree-
ment that will improve things
for our teachers and stu-
dents;" Ms. Martin says.
"It's been an extremely diffi-
cult time for teachers, stu-
dents and parents since the
kids walked in the door last
September. It's time to move
on.
Details of the agreemen-
will be made publicat a
board meeting on March 22.

More than 90 per cent of Durham
College's 1998 graduates found em-

"First off, I congratulate the entire

grads make grade with employers
"This success is also a tribute to em-
ployers throughout Durham Region
who hire large numbers of Durham
grads and who help shape the quality of

The
rograms.'The survey results for all 25 Ontario
community colleges released Tuesday
detail placement figures and graduate
and employer satisfaction.
In Durham, the survey revealed that:
• 91 per cent of Durham College's 1998
graduates were working or self-em-
ployed six months after leaving school;
• 91 per cent of the college's grads were
satisfied, very satisfied or neutral about
their education', usefulness in helping
them achieve their goals;
• 99 per cent of employers were satis-
Tied, very satisfied or neutral about the
skills and effectiveness of the Durham
grads they hired.
According to the college, the survey
results will help Ontario colleges pin-
point how they can improve programs;
enable students to compare colleges
based on how recent graduates view the
effectiveness of their programs; and
provide employers a mechanism to give
colleges feedback on the skills of grads.
A news release from the college re-
ports the results will also affect the
funding colleges receive in the future.
"in a few years, a percentage of the gov-
ernment funding each college receives
will be linked directly to its success
rate."

Now that's `Food 4 Thought'
Program offers young moms important lessons in child nutrition
BY LINDA WHITE
Staff Writer
For young moms, learning
how to prepare healthy meals on
a budget and spending time with
their peers is an uplifting experi-
ence.
"They make you feel wel-
come;" Pickering resident Shara-
lyn Manley says of the Food '4'
Thought program offered at The
Youth Centre in Ajax. "They
don't make you feel like a bad
person for having a baby so
young, like the rest of the world
does.
"They don't put you down,"
adds the 19 -year-old. "They're
trying to help you out"
The weekly program has been
offered to young moms and
young moms -to -be since Febru-
ary, 1997.
It's open to young women
aged under 26 years and is of-
fered on a drop-in basis.
It attracts from 24 to 30 par-
ticipants and their babies.
Each Wednesday afternoon,
they get together to prepare a
snack, plan and prepare a meal,
and clean up.
They also learn about nutri-
tion, prenatal health and support,
parenting support, relationship
issues, personal and baby care,
budgeting and resources avail-
able in the community.
"The peer support is very im-
portant," notes facilitator Diane
:MacEachern, a nurse practitioner
at The Youth Centre.
"They can share the chal-
lenges of being young parents.
Some partners are involved, but
many arc not."
For Kelly Babcock of Ajax,
the program has given her a
chance to make new friends with
people who have similar inter-
ests.
The 22 -year-old lives with her
boyfriend, but looks forward to
weekly meetings at the centre
and says her six -month-old son
enjoys interacting with other ba-
bies.
"We're all friends now," she
says of other group members,
some of whom get together out-
side the weekly meetings.
And she's picked up tips on
such things as how to make her
own baby food.
They gave me a food grinder
so I can make my own food. I've
tried baby food in a jar, but it
tastes so much better when you
make it yourself."
The federally -funded program
is administered through the
YWCA in Oshawa and is also of-
fered at two locations in Oshawa
and four locations in northern
Durham Region.
Its aim is to "enhance the
overall health and well-being of
teens," explains Ms. MacEach-
ern.
"Meal preparation is a big
part of the program. Participants
learn how to prepare nutritious
meals on a budget" and leave
with $10 to $15 worth of free
groceries, such as dairy prod-
ucts, fruit and vegetables to use
at home.
Pregnant participants also re-
ceive prenatal vitamins at no
charge, as they are provided
through Health Canada.
Food `4' Thought also aims to
reduce the incidence of low
birth -weight babies, to increase
the number of teen mothers
choosing to breastfeed and to
lengthen the duration of breast-
feeding.
Because The Youth Centre is
also a medical facility, the young
moms can have their babies
checked and immunized at a lo-
cation where they feel comfort-
able.
The Youth Centre also offers
prenatal classes about six times a
year.
The popular program has re-
ceived "incredible support" from
the community, reports Ms.
MacEachern, pointing to holiday
Christmas baskets provided by
Holy Trinity Anglican Church in
Ajax, and donations from the
food bank at St. Paul's On -the -

Growth threatens to send watershed's future up the creek
Ajax resident Errol Sarpkaya is
an environmentalist who's con-
cerned about the impact of future
population growth on the local
ecosystem.
Historically, the Native people had
a north -south trail along the banks of
what they called "sin qua trik de que
onk" or "pine woods along side". In
the 1600s, the French came upon "sin
qua trik de que onk" for the first time
and named it "river au salmon" for its
abundant supply of Atlantic Salmon.
By the late 1700s, "river au salmon",
as well as most of Upper Canada,
was owned by the Crown of England.
Duffins Creek got its current name
from an Irish trapper who purchased
the land we know as Duffins
Creek/Marsh in 1788, only to be
robbed and killed three years later in
1791. By the late 1800% the Duffins
Creek Watershed was divided up into
rectangular lots owned by families
with names like Peak, Richardson,
Ratcliff, Cornell and Brown. As the

area developed, agricultural initia-
tives and urbanization began to alter
the natural flow of the watershed.
At the turn of this century the
creek's banks were used as urban
garbage dumps and during the Sec-
ond World War as a munitions scrap
yard. In the 1950s a massive soil and
clay dump in one of Duffins
Creek/Marsh embankments and
dredging a new channel at the mouth
of the creek had tremendous impacts
on the local ecology.
Today, Duffins Creek Watershed
crosses many municipal boundaries
and contains a mixture of privately -
owned homes, commercial and in-
dustrial facilities as well as vegeta-
tion and livestock farms. Publicly -
owned lands within the watershed in-
clude property under the control of
federal, provincial, regional and mu-
nicipal governments. The general
public also uses the watershed for
recreational activities including fish-
ing, picnicking, boating, bird watch-
ing, walking, bicycling, in-line skat-
ing and hiking, to name a few.
In less than 25 years Durham Re-
gion's population growth is expected
to double. This growth will place an
extraordinary demand on the natural
resources of the Duffins Creek Wa-
tershed. What do we expect will hap-
pen to environmental resources under
existing planning management mea-
sures and regulatory legislation crite-
ria? Are the current protections ade-
quate to contend with future popula-
tion growth impacts on Duffins
Creek Watershed and our water qual-
ity'?

Pickering juniors earn conference semi-final series win over Oshawa, now in East Conference final
Pantherstake lead over Ll*ndsa
BY AL RIVE.7T
Sports Editor
PICKERPNG — The Pickering Boyer
Pontiac Panthers put together two impor-
tant victories on the weekend — one to ex-
tinguish the Oshawa Legionaires' playoff
hopes and another to get a jump on the
Lindsay Muskies in the Conference cham-
pionship series.
The Panthers hosted the Muskies in the
first game of the hest -of -seven OHA On-
tario Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey League
East Conference championship series at
the Pickering Recreation Complex Sunday
night. A goal early in the third period by
Steve Farquharson held up the rest of the
way in a 3-2 win.
Game two in the series was played at
the complex Monday night. The result
wasn't available at the News Advertiser's
press deadline. The series resumes in Lind-
say for game three Wednesday night.
Game four is also in Lindsay Thursday
evening.
Sunday's victory over Lindsay came
just 48 hours after the Panthers put the fin-
ishing touches on the East Conference
semi-final series victory over the rival Le-
gionaires with a 5-2 win in Pickering Fri-
day night. The Panthers took the best -of
seven series four games to two.
Most of the scoring came in the second
period of Sunday's game, with the
Muskies and Panthers trading two goals
apiece for a 2-2 tie heading into the second
intermission. Just 1:38 into the final frame,
Farquharson's slapshot was mishandled by
Muskies' goalie Nate Bedford and fell be-
hind him into the net.
Panthers' head coach Rod McGillis
notes it was important for the club to get
off to the solid start at home in the cham-
pionship series where the Panthers have
dominated this post -season.
"it was a critical win for us in the first
game of the series;' says McGillis. "We
certainly wanted to start off well at home.
The guys rose to the challenge and it was a
huge win for us"
McGillis praised his charges' defensive
play, which was able to render ineffective
Lindsay's attempts at employing the neu-
tral -zone trap. He notes the defensive abil-
ities of both teams, including solid goal-
tending, should make the series a close
one.
"I expect there will be a lot of low -scor-
ing games in this series. That's when we'll

use our disciplined play and let our special
teams help us out:'
Special teams also played a heightened
role for the Panthers in the first game of
the series. The club's penalty killing unit
was perfect in the contest, killing off five
Lindsay powerplays.
The weekend set of games also saw the
Panthers' snipers re-emerge in the playoffs
after being relatively quiet through most of
the post -season. McGillis noted George
Trifon and Joel Johnston were major rea-
sons why the Panthers earned the victories
over Oshawa to close out that series and
against Lindsay to take an early lead in the
championship series.
"The key to this playoff series is that
we have a number of guys who can put the
puck in the net. It makes us that much
more difficult to beat. We've received
some timely goals from Steve Farquharson
and, early in the playoffs, from Jason
Lange. George Trifon was unbelievable in
games five and six in the Oshawa series
and Joel Johnston also picked up points in
that series. Jeff Milroy has been our spark -
plug throughout the playoffs. Right now,
we're getting production from all three
lines, so we'll be tough to shut down"
Also scoring for the Panthers against
Lindsay were Marcel Rodman and Mike
Hanna. Assisting were Johnston, Sean Mc -
Morrow, Farquharson, Bill Duncan and
T.J. Kemp.
Meanwhile, in Friday's series closer
against Oshawa, the Panthers took a 3-1
first -period lead on the visiting Legion-
aires and never looked back cn route to the
victory.
Rodman and Trifon each scored twice
for the Panthers in Friday's game. Jeff Mil-
roy rounded out the scoring.
Registering assists were Trifon, Luc
Chiasson and Johnston each with two,
Jason Lange, Kemp and Milroy with one
apiece.
