PICKERING — The Town
has established a citizens' commit-
tee to help determine how a provin-
cial fund for local charities should
be allocated.
The $291,747 being distributed
is part of the Province's 'Advance
Funding Program' to provide $40
million in interim funding through
the Ontario Lottery Corporation to
community charities in Ontario.
A Town ad last fall inviting
local community groups to apply
for the funding available here
brought in about $1 million worth
of requests from organisations
ranging from sports clubs to the
Ajax -Pickering Hospital Founda-
tion.
The reason for having the citi-
zens' body, said Ward 1 Regional
Councillor Maurice Brenner, was
to ensure allocation of the money
will be "transparent and at arms -
length from any political process"
The councillors' committee also
established criteria for the citizens'
committee to use in considering the
applications.
Six categories of applicants
were deemed acceptable: sports,
cultural or environmental groups,
service clubs, children and youth
or seniors' services and health ser-
vices. The citizens' committee is to
report back to Council with its rec-
ommendations by March 22. Its
members are Alex Honeyford (re-
tired from a position with the
provincial Ministry of Community
and Social Services, Tent' James (a
founder of the local Civitan Club)
and Heather Guscott (a member of
the Pickering Public Library
Board).

The students will instead

Golden years can bring a lot of stress, especially on a marriage
Retirement transitions
BY LINDA WHITE
Staff Writer
or many, the retire-
ment vears are
something to look
forward to. Some
couples carefully
plan for years,
putting aside as much as possible
into retirement savings plans, ea-
gerly anticipating the day when
they can travel, enjoy their hobbies
and pursue other interests.
Others have retirement thrust
upon them, through layoffs, the
golden handshake or injury. They
aren't prepared financially — or
psychologically — and haven't
given much thought to how they
will spend the next 30 or so years
of life without a career or job.
That can be particularly difficult
if one spouse is still working, espe-
cially if they are working solely out
of financial necessity.
But no matter how you enter re-
tirement, you are about to embark
on a new course in your life and
will face many changes, including
a change in your relationship with
your spouse.
That relationship may grow
deeper as you spend more time
with one another, enjoying com-
mon interests at a more leisurely
pace of life, relishing all you
worked so hard to attain.
For many couples, however, re-
tirement may bring new stress. For
a homemaker accustomed to her
own schedule, togetherness may
threaten her home management
skills. The spouse who has just re-
tired, meanwhile, may feel out of
place and experience a loss of self-
worth.
And some couples may realize
they have been co -existing for
many years — each following their
own interests, goals and ambitions,
but not really spending much time
together. They may discover the
person they are married to is really
not the same person they wed so
many years ago — and neither are
they.
"To retire is to go through one
of life's transitions and a mourning
process is involved;' concurs psy-
chologist Dr. Michael Teehan in
Whitby. "It can lead to expression
of the loss by acting out in their re-
lationship.
"In addition, the issues of who
has control change with retirement.
And those spouses, because they
have less individual control and
have to deal with each other more,
sometimes find themselves at odds
and in disagreement"
That can be particularly difficult
"for couples who have not had
much interaction" with one anoth-
er before retirement. "Some cou-
ples find differences or personality
characteristics are more difficult to
cope with when they are together
more;' notes Dr. Teehan.
Those differences may not have
been so apparent when at least one
of the spouses was working.
"Some individuals have personali-
ty problems but work allows them
to deal with those problems and
keep them at bay. When retirement
uccun, they have fewer familiar
defences and require time and con-
siderable efforts to develop differ-
ent sorts of defences that are more
open to relationships"
Finances can also come into
play. "Sometimes retirement
means less funds, so some couples
have to cut back on what they
enjoy doing and that may cause re-
sentment;' explains Dr. Teehan,
who suggests counselling may help
some couples experiencing marital
Keeping busy key to happiness
You've worked for years and
dreamed of the day you'll retire.
Have you given much thought to
what you'll do?
Recently -retired Durham Re-
gional Police Sergeant Ken Hudson
has and this he knows for sure: "1
won't be sitting around"
Mr. Hudson attended retirement
planning seminars offered through
the police department union and has
contsidered the financial and psycho-
logical impacts of retiring.
At 57, Mr. Hudson is retiring ear-
lier than the average Canadian, who
calls it quits at age 62, Statistics
Canada reports. But behind that av-
erage lies a "more complex picture",
as a much higher percentage of
workers are retiring in their fifties,
whik a substantial proportion are
still working well past age 65, Sta-
tistics Canada notes.
For many people, embarking on a
life of leisure can be a stressful jour-
ney, particularly if they don't have
interests or hobbies to keep them
motivated.
Admittedly, Mr. Hudson is enter-
ing retirement "with some trepida-
tion. I know people who are retwed
and drey're always busy. My moth
-
er-in-law is 90 years old and you
have to make an appointment to see
her:' he laughs.
Still, he is looking forward to de-
voting more time to his interests. He
is president of the local Lions Club
and is active in his church. He is also
eager to spend more time with his
wife Shirley.
"We don't go our separate ways.
We both love Itavellieg, (going to
yard sales), meeting people. We also
dabble in antiques" and enjoy work-
ing on their boom, a renovated
schoolhouse which they bought w
the early I%0s, just before they got
married.
Mr. Hudson is aware, however, of
the stress reurement and being to-
gether can bring to a marriage. "If
you really care for one another and
have a mature outlook, you dKxdd
be able to manage," he believes.
One of the most difficuk things
for Mr. Hudson to come to terms
with is leaving his police colleagues.
"You feel like you're abandoning
your fellow officer," he says, search-
ing for words to explain how he
feels. "You've had to count on one
another in tough titres and you don't
just walk away from that."
CARL FERENC7/ News Advertiser photo
Ken and Shirley Hutbvon in a room of their home surrounded by

difficulties.
Certainly, one of the myths
about retirement is that it is a vaca-
tion, explains Fay McCorkell.
manager of seniors' programs at
the Whitby Seniors' Activity Cen-
tre. "It's a total life transition. Peo-
ple plan ahead for the next six
months and talk about taking the
trips they've always dreamed of,
golfing and doing jobs around the
house "
But if they're retiring at 55, they
need to look into the future much
further than that. At retirement
seminars offered by the centre sev-
eral years ago, Mrs. McCorkell re-
minded couples "they're not al-
ways going to be 60."
That's why she recommends
looking ahead 30 years. "Aging has
a theme of loss — vision, hearing,
physical activity — even for the
most active of us. 'liter are other
losses that are really significant
around retirement, such as friends
who retire at different times, and
the declining health and even death
of those friends. Those are things
that have to be considered."
And if you're planning to retire
at a cottage, for instance, you need
to determine such things as if
health care is accessible and if liv-
ing on a lake is something they
both want. "It may be heaven on
earth for one, but very lonely for
the other," reminds Mrs. Mc-
Corkell.
It's important that couples talk
about their expectations and
dreams. Mrs. McCorkell points to
an example of a man who had
taken his lunch to work for years
and his dream when he retired was
to finally be able to sit down to a
hot lunch. Part of that expectation
was that his wife would make the
meal, but she was busy at clubs she
had joined years earlier.
"They didn't give each other
those agendas and dreams and it
was a big problem for them;' notes
Mrs. McCorkell.
That's not uncommon, she adds,
pointing to statistics which indicate
an increase in divorce and separa-
tion following retirement. It
forces couples to deal which issues
that may have been (there) for
years, but not at the forefront"
For sonic, there is a struggle
with the so-called `Protestant work
ethic'. "Leisure is almost taboo,"
Mrs. McCod=H explains. " 11hey
don't realize kisune is not about
doing nothing, but what you want
to do"
She recommends "a balance of
activities as you put that structure
back in your fife, hoping you'll
have more to do than just golfing.
You look around (the centre) and
it's positive."
Mrs. McCorkell points to re-
search which indicates "the ability
to take on new learning helps you
stay alert," and can include such
hobbies as knitting, bridge and eu-
chre. As you consider those issues,
you may cope better with retire-
ment. "Most problems arise when
there is no planning," Mrs. Mc-
Corkell believes.

EDITORIAL
New party must
form new platform
United Alternative only
chance for right wing
The 1990s have been a fascinating
era in federal politics. Cast your mind
back a decade ago. The Progressive
Conservatives reigned supreme under
Brian Mulroney, the Liberals were
floundering under John Turner, the NDP
was in the wilderness with Ed Broad-
bent about to step down. Since 1989:
- the Liberals re -organized, elected
Jean Chreticn leader, installed Paul
Martin as finance minister and swept to
power winning back-to-back majority
governments;
- the PCs were blown out in the 1993
election and after a Kim Campbell hic-
cup and Jean Charest relief job turned
eventually to Joe Clark to revive its for-
tunes;
- the NDP has found its place as the
only true party of the left with first Au-
drey McLaughlin and then Alexa Mc-
Donough as leader;
- and two completely new parties
have come from nowhere to represent
two distinct regions of the country,
Western Canada with the Reform party
under now Official Opposition Wader
Preston Manning, and Quebec and the
Bloc Quebecois with Lucien Bouchard
and now Gilles Duceppe at the controls.
What's it all mean? That change is
ever constant in Canada and that's why
the United Alternative is now the
flavour of the year.
Can UA offer a legitimate, strong
right-wing option to the Liberals and
in 11,.E .
win support in Ontario and Atlantic
Canada to complement its popularity in
the West? That's the critical question, of
course. In fact, it's the only reason Re-
formers and some Tories got together in
Ottawa this past weekend to vote to
form a new party.
That new party will not, and it should
not. have Preston Manning as Wader,
nor can Joe Clark be its champion.
Maybe NDP MP Lorne Nystrom, who
made an appearance at the convention
had it right when he proposed Paul Mar-
tin be the Wader of a new right-wing
party which would include Reformers,
Tories AND Liberals.
For Mr. Nystrom has put his finger
on the problem for Reformers and To -
rim. Over the past six years, the Liber-
als, as personified by the fiscally con-
servative deficit -cutting policies of Mr.
Martin have occupied the centre -right-
wing the Tories under Mr. Mulroney
held supreme. And that has pushed PCs
and Reformers alike aside.
To bounce back and offer an alterna-
tive, the UA would have to outflank Mr.
Martin and will do so by offering huge
tax cuts, promising tougher law -and -
order, being increasingly harsh on im-
migrant criminals, and a take -ii -or -
leave -it Quebec platform. Sounds just
like what Reform stands for right now.
The key will be to sell a 'kinder -gen -
tier' Reform party which would be
friendly to Central Canada
To chase or not to chase: that is the question.
Whether tis nobler in the mind to forsake justice and suffer the scandal
of crimes unansuwed or to take up chase, and by opposing them. end
them... or others...

Canada is known as a country with
unlimited natural resources such as
coal, silver, gold, water, etc. The true,
real natural resource that is frequently
overlooked is our volunteers.
Here in Durham there is an abun-
dance of wonderfully committed resi-
dents who give of themselves to help
others, get programs or services started
or give of their time and energy to
make our community a better place.
The involvement by many of our
citizens is commendable and inspira-
tional. A growing number of Canadi-
ans are choosing to volunteer for vari-
ous projects and for various reasons.
With corporate downsizing, govern-
ment cutbacks and aging of former
volunteers, we need more and more
area residents to "see the light" and get
involved in local initiatives.
We must keep our volunteer base

strong and ever growing. Service
clubs, non-profit groups, seniors' cen-

vice outlets are continuing their contri-
bution to the volunteer scene. Howev-
M there is always room for more ded-
icated volunteers to assist with the
myriad of projects and programs and
special events that dot our calendar.
More and more today we see stu-
dent volunteers and corporate volun-
teers getting involved in school and
community functions. The age span of
volunteers is most definitely growing.
As we face the new millennium we
will need everyone pitching in if we
are to revitalize and re-energize our
community. We should be proud of our
town and our region and get involved
There can never be enough friendly,
dedicated volunteers to make our com-
munity the envy of the province.
The benefits of volunteering are
many. You meet new friends and enjoy
the feeling of self-worth in doing
something good for those in meed.
Thine is also the Warning aspect of
doing something new. Finally, volun-
