PICKERING — The commu-
nity lost another piece of its history
this week, but everybody seems to
agree it couldn't be helped.
The 150 -year-old coach house
next to Dunbar House on Dunbar -
ton Road was demolished Monday
to make way for new homes. The
remaining old residence and the
coach house, which is believed to
also have been used as a black-
smith's shop at some point, once
belonged to one of Pickering's
founding families.
"We're very sorry that the coach
house had to come down, but there
wasn't any way to save it;' says
John Sabean, chairman of Heritage
Pickering, the Town's Local Archi-
tectural Conservation Advisory
Committee, and vice-president of
the Pickering Township Historical
Society. "We did review the build-
ing. We would have tried to pre-
serve it if there were any way of
preserving it. It was in such bad
shape.-
According to Mr. Sabean, restor-
ing the coach house would have
cost hundreds of thousands of dol-

lars and wouldn't have left much of
the original structure.
The property had belonged to
the family of William Dunbar, who
settled in the area in the 1830s. His
descendants remained here for
about 150 years. taking on promi-
nent roles in the community.

William Dunbar was one of the
founders of the village of Dunbar -
ton, one of the originators of the
Pickering Harbour Company, an el-
der in the Presbyterian church, and,
together with his sons, apparently a
participant in the Rebellion of 1837
as well.
While the carriage house is
gone, the developer of the property
has left Dunbar House, which dates
back to the early 190(X-, in place.
It's being renovated and used as a
residence. Mr. Sabean says he's
pleased the house is being kept and
praised the developer, Gwitlimbury
Homes, for allowing it to remain.

PICKERING — Town Coun-
cil has placed its official stamp of
approval on the push for a full-
service cardiac care centre at the
Centenary Health Centre (CHC)
in Scarborough, which would
provide services such as bypass
surgery and angioplasty closer to
home for Pickering and Ajax res-
idents.
Council passed a resolution
Monday to "strongly support" the
enhanced cardiac service at the
CHC, after hearing from hospital
cardiologist Dr. Joe Ricci.
"There is a need now in our
region to provide this service,"
said Dr. Ricci.
"We are asking for a strong
endorsement to bring this service
to the eastern area"
The CHC and the Ajax and
Pickering Health Centre belong
to the Rouge Valley Health Sys-
tem formed in a merger last sum-
mer.
Dr. Ricci told councillors the
CHC has been developing its car-
diac services for two decades and
is the logical choice to provide
full cardiac facilities and surgery
for the approximately 1.3 million
people living in the east Toronto
and Durham Region areas.
He noted the CHC already has
advanced emergency cardiac ser-
vices, modern diagnostic equip-
ment, one of the largest and most
efficient cardiac rehabilitation

PICKERING — A Pickering
youngster will play a role in Saturday's
celebration of the opening of the Air
Canada Centre, the new home of the
NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and the
NBA's Toronto Raptors.
Lee -Ann Murphy, 8, will drop the
puck for the ceremonial faceoff before
the game between the Maple Leafs and
the Montreal Canadiens.
The Grade 3 student at St. Elizabeth
Seton Catholic School in Pickering will
share the honours with Daniel Clarke, 9,
of Toronto, after the two were selected
at random from mina hockey leagues
in the Greater Toronto Area.
Lee -Ann says she's looking forward
to dropping the puck at the Air Canada
Centre as it's her first chance to see an
NHL game in person. "I've never been
there before and I've never been to a re-
al hockey game before;' she says.
She's doubly excited by the prospect
of meeting her favourite Leaf Mats
Sundin because, as team captain and
first-line centre, he'll likely take the cer-
emonial faceoff. Lee -Ann reports her
friends and schoolmates have been in-
quiring since Tuesday how she was cho-
sen to take pan in the historic event.
'I?tey've been asking me 'how did
you get picked?' and 'how did they find
your name'' and stuff'...
Lee -Ann is a big fan of hockey, hav-
ing played for the past four years with
the Durham West Girls' Hockey Associ-
ation. This season, she's splitting time
between her house league team and the
novice 'B' rep squad.

PICKERING — It was a good -
news speech from Mayor Wayne
Arthurs at the annual Mayors' Lun-
cheon held Wednesday by the Ajax -
Pickering Board of Trade at the Re-
galis Restaurant in Pickering.
The mayor painted a rosy econom-
ic picture of the town in a speech de-
tailing all the building and business
activity taking place in Pickering.
He said, " 1998 was a good year
for business, but 1999 is shaping up
in my view to be even better."
According to the mayor, Pickering
received about 1,000 building permit
applications in 1998 representing ap-
proximately $150 million worth of
construction. More than 650 new res-
idential units were approved, includ-
ing a 16 -storey apartment building
and recreation complex in the down-
town area, a 200 -unit expansion of
the Valley Farm Retirement Centre
and a 172 -unit subdivision at the
northeast corner of Whites Road and
Finch Avenue.
"The general business and manu-
facturing sectors are considered to be
booming;' noted Mayor Arthurs, cit-
ing a number of expansions at local
businesses and industries.
"By the end of 1998, some 61 new
companies had commenced operation
in Pickering, creating 582 new full-
time jobs:' said the mayor. "Over
783,000 square feet of expansions
and new development will create an
additional 1,500 new full-time jobs
by the middle of the year 2000"
Mayor Arthurs also brought news
of three important additions to the lo-
cal business community, including a
major new tenant at what is now the

to the new Ontario Provincial
Assessment Corporation;" he
said. "OPAC has leased 43,000
square feet at the Pickering Cor-
porate Centre and will be opera-
tional by April 1999. Clearnet
has agreed to move its Pickering
operation into Scarborough earli-

Tire store on a 10 -acre site

cent to the Metro East Trade

ed to begin by late spring on
Squires Beach Road.

Don't handcuff

Give them the tools they need
and give runners stiffer penalties
To chase or not to chase'? That's just
one of many tough split decisions police
officers have to make each and every
day as they patrol their beats.
There's a looming threat the decision

pursuits are being considered by Ontario

Motorists put on notice with Operation Bus Watch

Durham Regional Police are
cracking down on drivers who
don't stop when children are get-
ting on and off of school buses
under the Operation Bus Watch
program launched in Oshawa
Thursday.
With the help of community
members, crossing guards and
bus drivers across the region, po-
lice are nabbing drivers who dis-
obey crossing guards or the law
requiring them to stop 20 metres
from a school bus with flashing
red lights.
"Set up as an educational pro-
gram to make drivers more aware
of their responsibilities when ap-
proaching a school bus with its
red lights flashing, the program is
also an enforcement program to
assist in dealing with the more se-
rious complaints received from
school bus drivers and crossing
guards;" Durham Regional Police
Constable John Hinds told bus
drivers and school board repre-
sentatives at police headquarters
Thursday.
"At least once a day over the
radio you hear someone saying a
driver went through their stop
sign;' says Alison McGrath, a bus
driver with Stock Transportation
who maintains the program is
greatly needed in Durham.
The program, which began in
the Halton -Peel area in 1992,
calls on parents, bus drivers.

witness a violation to collect as
much information regarding the
vehicle and driver and then file a
report with police outlining the
incident.
Violation forms are then re-
viewed by police who send a cau-
tionary letter to first-time offend-
ers or issue a summons in more
serious offences.
"It's a positive program de-
signed to increase the safety level
of children getting on and off bus-

Since the program's inception
in January, Const. Hinds reports
25 complaints have been received
and one charge has been laid for a
school bus violation.
"The program is starting to
build and expand in the commu-
nity," he says, adding failure to
stop for a school bus carries a fine
of $485 for a first offence, and up
to $2,000 and six demerit points
for subsequent violations. Dis-
obeying a school crossing guard
carries a $105 fine and the loss of
three points.

AJAX — A co-op student on a
"ride -a -along" with police Tuesday
night got a first-hand look at law
enforcement when he was called
into duty during a foot and car
chase.
The action began just before 10
p.m. while the 22 -year-old student
was accompanying a plainclothes
Durham Regional Police officer in
an unmarked cruiser during a rou-
tine patrol in Ajax.
Constable Phil Edgar was run-
ning the licence plate on a 1995
Plymouth Voyager when it was
learned the van was stolen.
The vehicle pulled out of a plaza
on Harwood Avenue South and was
followed to Mandrake Avenue.
From there the vehicle contin-
ued down several side suoets at
which time the driver apparently
be,:ame aware of police and
reached speeds of 100 kilometres
an hour," Sergeant Jim Grimley
said.
The officer chased the fleeing
van to a dead-end on Harman
Street, where two occupants bolted
from the vehicle.
`Both the officer and student
went after the driver on foot but
since the officer was in plainclothes
he didn't have a radio. So he ad-
vised the student to go back to the
car to radio for assistance;' Sgt.
Grimley said.
The student summoned for
back-up and uniform officers
quickly arrived on scene. A short
time later a police dog tracked a
suspect to a nearby backyard.
A 17 -year-old boy, of no fixed
address, was taken into custody.
The youth is charged with pos-
session of stolen property over
$5,000, dangerous driving, posses-
sion of burglary tools, mischief
over $5,000 and two counts of
breach of recognizance.
A second youth is sought.

Durham steps in to
keep Ark afloat
Durham Region is giving a
youth hostel about $250,000 to
keep open a minimum of 18 beds
a night.
The Ark in Oshawa needs the
financial boost to offset changes
the Province made in providing
assistance to 16- and 17-year-
olds. Under Ontario Works, young
runaways who return home but
leave a second time aren't eligible
for shelter.
About 280 young people
needing lodging at The Ark last
year fell into that category, leaving
the shelter with a shortfall of more
than $33,000.
The Ark hopes to raise
575.000, but needed the guaran-
teed amount from the Region to
remain viable. The one-year fund -
ng allocation approved by Re-
gional Council will be reviewed by
politicians in 2000 when they'll
decide 0 they'll renew the pledge.
The Ark not only provides
shelter to young runaways, it also
encourages them to return home.
An earlier report to Council's
health and social services com-
mittee noted The Ark would be
hurting repeat clients and their
parents it it followed provincial
regulations and advised youths
against returning home because
they wouldn't be eligible for lodg-
ing if they ran away a second
time.
That's "not a policy they (Ark),
nor we, should endorse," the re-
port concluded.

practical advice on handling bully-
ing and peer pressure at St. Mon-
ica Catholic School Wednesday,
Feb. 24.
The seminar, featuring guest
speaker Greg Anderson, a princi-
pal, author and public speaker,
addresses everyday school is-
sues including advice on bullying,
split grades, parent -teacher inter-
views and lunch time at school.
The presentation, which runs
from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., is spon-
sored by the parent councils at St.
Monica and St. Marguerite Bour-
geoys Catholic School. Everyone

PICKERING — There's still plenty of
fun left this weekend as the 16th annual
Claremont Winter Carnival wraps up with a
parade and other events.
If it's cold enough to make ice the free Li-
oness Skating Party scheduled for 7 p.m.
tonight (Feb. 19) at Claremont Park will go
ahead. There'll be music and refreshments, a
Flashlight Parade (bring your own flash-
light), and prizes for the best home-made
noise makers. It
Saturday's activities begin with a Pancake
Breakfast from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at Claremont
United Church on old Brock Road. The
Claremont Mile Run begins at 10:30 a.m. at
the Country Depot at Old Brock Road and
Central Street. Entry forms for the run may
be picked up from the General Store or
Country Depot and must be brought to the
Country Depot on race day before 10 a.m.
There'll be prizes for the top finishers in sev-
eral age categories.
The Claremont Parade begins at I I a.m.
along Old Brock Road, starting at William
Street and ending at the Claremont Commu-
nity Centre. Afterwards, around 11:30 a.m.,
the Claremont and District Community As-
sociation will hold an open house at the com-
munity centre with refreshments and the
awarding of prizes for the best parade floats,
Mile Run, Poster Contest and Snowman
Contest. From noon to 3:30 p.m. there'll be
all kinds of activities and games in Clare-
mont Park — including sleigh rides (to 2:30
p.m.), a scavenger hunt, a 'Bird of Prey
Demonstration', chuck wagon races, puck
shooting, face painting, log sawing and nail
hammering competitions, and a chili cook -
off. Refreshments and hot apple cider will be
available all afternoon. There will also be in-
door games at the community centre.
The Trappers' Ball will begin Saturday
night at 8 p.m. at the community centre. Par-
ticipants are invited to get into the spirit of
the occasion by wearing trappers' costumes.
There'll be lots of prizes, a lip sync contest,
a DJ, dancing and back bacon on a bun. Ad-
mission is $10.

early enough and possibly save yourself a fortune."

How To Control Noise Level
Materials placed in walls and ceilings can

and from room to room. Some materials,

When most people think about insulation,

• Choose solid, wood -insulated core doors
where privacy is demanded.
• Use thick glass, insulating glass and
storm windows to help
reduce sound transmission
through windows.
• Select quiet, high-quality appliances.
• Install telephones, doorbells, intercoms or
audio built-ins on interior walls only, never
on party or corridor walls.
• Caulk holes made by wiring which
penetrates connecting structures with elastic

Auction/Dance
Saturday, February 27, 1999 is the date set for Big Sisters 10th Annual
"Jeans 'n' Jewels" Auction/Dance. This, the largest special event fundraiser
held by our local Big Sisters agency, will be held at the Pickering Community
Centre, Valleyfarm Road, Pickering at 7:00 p.m.
This fun -filled event includes: a "silent auction" for more than 30 theme
baskets; a "live auction" segment featuring many wonderful items such as:
weekend getaways; one -of -a -kind items; original artwork; and a silver bar
donated by Toronto Dominion Bank! Guests will enjoy dancing to the music
of the "Charles Street Band" and door prizes for only $10.00 per person. A
cash bar and food will also be available. All proceeds from the "Jeans 'n'
Jewels" Auction/Dance will go directly towards supporting the preventative
services offered by Big Sisters to girls and young women in Ajax &
Pickering. Presently Big Sisters has more than 40 "matches" with 23 Little
Sisters and Teen Moms waiting for a Big Sister - some for more than a vear!
This year's auction patron, Angelo Pucci, a local real estate agent with
Sutton Group Heritage Realty Inc., has issued a challenge to all local
businesses to support Big Sisters "Jeans 'n' Jewels" Auction. Donations of
products, services, or sponsorship of the event will go a long way toward
making this event a success!
Last year's auction "sold out" early. Anyone interested in tickets for this
exciting event, or for more information regarding sponsorship or donations,
can call either Big Sisters office at 428-8111 or Angelo Pucci at 831-9500.
