Durham's public high school
teachers are calling for a judicial
revie%% of the arbitration ruling
handed down this week, claiming
the *'process was stacked against
the teachers from the beginning"

School Teachers' Federation
(OSSTF), says the union is appeal-
ing arbitrator Richard Jackson's
ruling that calls for teachers to in-
struct 6.5 of eight classes every two
days.
..The Durham District School
Board, that has received interna-
tional recognition for excellence in
public education, is the best exam-
ple of the damage caused by this
government's cuts to public educa-
tion;' she said in a news release.
"Jackson's claim that if he accept-
ed the teacher's position he would
not be able to justify his award to
the government is the proof that
this process was stacked against the
teachers from the beginning:'

Earl Manners adds. "Jackson's
comment that nothing in Bill 160
specifically required teachers to
pick up a fourth class, is a direct
contradiction to the award he has
made. This inconsistency and his
later admission that in fact he
might be wrong when he argues
that any future 'money should go to
relieving teachers' teaching load,'
means we will seek an immediate
judicial review of this award:'

in to provide relief
Hurricane
victims to
get clean
water
PICKERING — A pottery
teacher and her students are hop-
ing you can help them assist the
victims of Hurricane Mitch,
which devastated communities in
Ni,aragua and Honduras last fall.
"The people there are strug-
gling to survive:' notes The Turn-
ing Point Pottery Studio co-
owner Gay Liddell.
The potters will be holding a
Hurricane Relief Sale on Satur-
day. Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. at the studio, located in the
Pickering Recreation Complex at
1867 Vallev Farm Rd.
Pieces of pottery and sculp-
tures— made by artisans from be-
ginners to experts — will be for
sale, along with baked goods,
children's toy, books and other
items donated by Mrs. Liddell's
pottery students.
Money raised will go to the in-
ternational organization Potters
for Peace and will allow for the
production of hand -made ceramic
water filters. The filters are de-
signed for family use and remove
bacteria and other disease -caus-
ing organisms from polluted
water, making it safe for drink-
ing.
A filter unit is made of clay
mixed with sawdust and sand in a

Catholic teachers say Wednesday ruling is
`even worse' than public board decision

Durham's Catholic high
school teachers will be spending
more time in the classroom next
semester under an arbitration de-
cision that creates a "totally in-
equitable working situation in
our schools;' says a local union
leader.
Durham Catholic District
School Board chairman Mary
Ann Martin, meanwhile, says
there are no winners as a result of
Wednesday's long-awaited rul-
ing.
"I'm very pleased that this is
finally over;" Ms. Martin says.
adding "there's a lot of healing
that has to go on. I don't think
anybody comes out a winner."
After more than three months,

Mr White reports it's not so
much the increase in teaching
time that concerns him as the
"totally inequitable" situation the
ruling has created.
'Me ruling, which covers the
period From Sept. 1, 1998 to
Aug. 31, 2((X), means teachers
must teach an average of 6.7

Says Province owes
Region $1.3 million
for Morin inquiry
A drop in the number of people col-
lecting social assistance is the main
reason Durham Region could have a
$1.45 million surplus with its 1998
budget.
And, the water supply system could
generate a $1.8 million surplus and the
sanitary sewer system $2.3 million.
Any surplus generated in the water and
sewer systems are used to keep user
rates down.
Durham has also not received the
$1.3 million the Province promised to
help cover some of the Region's cost in
the Guy Paul Morin wrongful -convic-
tion inquiry, according to a staff report.
Regional Council endorsed a motion
Wednesday calling on the Province to
provide the Morin money promised last
summer.
The general levy surplus is expected
to be about $2.35 million, but $900,000
has been earmarked for Y21K purposes.
Fewer people on social assistance
saved about $1.8 million last year.

White maintains "other boards

per capita increases in funds
from the funding model as com-
pared to most other boards. They
got more money than they had
last year. The bottom line is they
didn't want to share it with their
employees...

trust in their grass-roots move-
ment," Mrs. Liddell notes.
"Potters like myself have a
benefit sale and send the
money to Potters for Peace.
The money is earmarked for

Wired teens in Durham just love to keep in touch
Sales people use them, pho-
tographers carry them and almost
every business person around has
one.
But more and more families
arc using pagers or cell phones,
too.
They are fast becoming the
favoured method of- parents and
teens to keep in touch during
their busy daily schedules.
"It's just peace ol' mind for a
parent;' said Janice O'Neill,
whose teenage son asked for a
cell phone for Christmas 1997.
"Our first reaction was 'No."'
she recalls.
But then she and her husband.
Fred, got thinking about Stephen,
who was then 17 and driving.
He got his phone, prepaid for a
year.
"It was a great thing to do be-
cause we always knew where he
was," Mrs. O'Neill said. "We
might as well take advantage of
the technology. It seems like a
yuppie thing but it isn't:'
They knew they could find out
where he was and when he'd lx:
home and knew also that if he had
problems while dn%ing, he could
get help.
Nk'hen the phone came up for
renewal this year, the O'Neills
asked Stephen if he wanted to
keep it, since he would have to
pay for it. He said

house"

Pine Ridge Secondary School in
Pickering, said the school has
banned cell phones and pagers
"but I bet if I went into one of my
senior classes, I could probably
pull 10 pagers out of 25 kids."
Most students, though, keep
the devices out of sight and leave
the pagers on "vibrate" so they
don't disturb classes, he added.

"A lot of parents are pre -pay-
ing, pay-as-you-go for peace of
mind.
"It's accelerated a lot more
since the summer. Everybody's
got so much on the go these days.
It's gotten to the point where peo-
ple need cells to keep track of
people."
Paging those in the know...
Special codes and pager etiquette aid communication
Young people using pagers to
keep in touch with parents and
friends often use codes to com-
municate.
Here are a few codes from the
Canadian Wireless Telecommuni-
cations Association (CM/TA):
• 07734, upside down, looks
like the word 'hello.'
• 143 means 'I love you.'
• 90*401773 is 'Go home.'
• 911 behind the phone num-
ber means the call is urgent.
• 411 indicates the caller needs
information.
CWTA also provides an eti-
quette guide for young people
using pagers, especially if the
parents are paying for the de-
vices.
Here are some tips:
• Answer parents' pages to
give them peace of mind.
• If you are to page your par-
ents at specific times, do so.
• Be considerate and set pager
to vibrate silently when a beep
would be inappropriate.
• Don't pull pagers out and
check them during class or other
inappropriate times since the
pager will hold the information
until you can get to it.
• Tell friends to page you when
a phone call might disturb your
parents.
• Make parents and employers
aware of any changes in your
schedule that might change their
schedules.

Preparing for
provincewide testing
Several initiatives are under way
within the Durham Catholic District
School Board to prepare Grade 3
and 6 pupils and teachers for this
year's provincewide tests.
In a report presented to the
board Monday. Gerry Blake, super-
intendent of programs. outlined the
board's action plan listing activities
to prepare students and teachers for
this year's assessment, which will
be administered in May.
As a follow-up to the release of
the 1997-98 test results, the board's
mathematics committee analyzed
the scores and suggested a variety
of activities and teaching strategies
designed to develop students' prob-
lem solving skills, and the board's lit-
eracy committee continued to pro-
mote reading and writing, Mr. Blake
reports.
This year the mathematics com-
mittee is continuing to develop fol-
low-up activities to strengthen stu-
dents' math skills. the Teaching and
Learning with Computers initiative is
being expanded to include all Grade
1 to 5 c►assrooms this spring and
every Grade 3 and 6 teacher will
take part in three half-day training
sessions with respect to sample as-
sessment units which will be used
by pupils to practise before the test
is administered. The board report,
along with action plans from each el-
ementary school are to be submit-
ted to the Education Quality and Ac-
countability Office. responsible for
administering the tests, by Feb. 1.

new safety record by working 2.6
million hours without a lost time in-
jury, Ontario Hydro reports.

result of all staff being focused on
our number -one priority - safety —

in routine. emergency and disaster situations; advise callers of
emergency first aid procedures; communicate with hospital
staff/physicians; set priorities for ambulance calls; elicit and
understand directional and geographical information; maintain
accurate records and assess circumstances of incident in order
to deploy assistance to callers.
Qualifications:
Hold (or acquire with 30 days of employment) valid first aid and
radio operator's certificates; knowledge of medical terminology,
demonstrated keyboarding skills at 35 wpm; effective
communication and decision making skills and demonstrated
ability to assess circumstances of an incident and determine best
solutions/resources. Ability to intervene and negotiate with
callers in varied degrees of stress and anxiety. Ability to grasp
spatial concepts, directions and geographic information. The
ability to work under stress and to work a shift rotation. To be
considered for employment, selected candidates must complete
successfully a pre-employment qualification process, which
includes standardized tests to be heli at the Oshawa C.A.C.C.
office, and a four-week centralized training program to be
delivered in Mississauga, Ontario commencing on February 8,
1999. A physical demands analysis of the position is available
upon request.

Orchestra stages concert Feb. 13
The Ajax -Pickering
Community Orchestra will
perform its second concert
of the season next month.
The orchestra's concert,
entitled A Minter Ro-
mance, is slated for the
Ajax Alliance Church on
Saturda}. Feb. 13 at 7:30
p.m.
The concert will include
music by Sibelius, Faurc,
Dvorak, Mozart and
Stravinsky. Featured per-
formers for the evening are
cellist Steve McNee who'll
perform Faure's Elegy for
Cello and Orchestra, and
clarinetists Stewart Ander-
son and Heather ' Whvte
and bassoonist Moira Tay-
lor in Mo/art's Diverti-
mento N0.4 K229,

donations will he accepted

men's hoops play
AJAX — Toronto Brake was run
over for Its second consecutive loss
after dropping a 57-50 decision to
Dakota Bob"s in Ajax Men's Basket-
ball League action on Jan. 20.
Despite the loss. Toronto Brake
continues to cling to first place in the
standings.
Al Sakata paced Bob's attack with
19 points. followed by Pat Roach with
11 and Chuck Tezak with 10. Mike
Gordensky replied with 18 for Toronto
Brake and Tom Rowen scored 16.
In the other game of the night.
Top Shelf Bar and Grill posted its sec-
ond win a row by defeating Dickson
Printing 58-50. Mike Stoddart poured
in 15 points for the winners. Dan De-
veau netted 13 and Lou Lapointe
chipped in with 10. Ken Russell was

PICKERING — The Pickering
Table Tennis Club will host its fourth
annual Pickering Flea Market Open
Table Tennis Tournament this Sunday,
Jan. 31, starting at 9 a.m.
The event will feature eight divi-
sions including the premier men's
and women's open, with prize money
at stake.
This year's event will include dou-
bles play.
The other divisions are the 'B', 'C'
and 'D' categories, as well as under -
15 and over -55 age brackets.
Tournament director Kam Bhatia
is delighted to see the event grow into
the largest table tennis showdown in
Ontario.
"Last year, we had players from
as far away as Buffalo and Quebec,"
says Bhatia.

PICKERING — Pickering's
Highbush Public School captured the
19th annual Rick Pettyjohn Basket-
ball Classic ( formerly known as the
Kinsmen Classic) over the weekend.
Highbush topped Cadarackque 28-
21 in the final, which featured 36 in-
termediate boys basketball teams
from elementary schools throughout
Durham Region.
Tournament organizers Jon Patte
and Frank Smith — teachers at Glen
Dhu Public School in Whitby — re-
named the event this year in memory
of Pettyjohn, a long-time tournament
supporter and Durham Board of Edu-
cation teacher, who passed away in
October.
About 400 Grade 7 and 8 students
took part in the tourney, playing 108
games over two days.
Highbush reached the final by
beating Glen Dhu of Whitby 26-18.
Cadarackque beat Lake Vista of Os-
hawa in the other semi-final contest
23-20.
Oshawa's Woodcrest won the B
championship, topping Lincoln
Alexander of Ajax 42-28 in the
final.

Parents at Ridgeway Public School
in Oshawa will continue to fight for a
delay in the transfer of their school to
the new French language tx>ard after
learning that board will not consider a
swap.
Durham District School Board
trustees voted last December to ask the
French board to consider swapping
Ridgeway for Central Park Public
School, but board communications
manager Mary Brown says staff
learned this week there will be no ex-
change of facilities.
"The French board is not interested
in Central Park Public School. It wants
to keep Ridgeway as their school;' Ms.
Brown says.
And, that decision has raised con-
cerns among parents about where their
children will attend school in Septem-
ber.
"This leaves us in an awful situa-
tion," says Ridgeway parent Tom
Balka. "We don't know where we're
going to be in September."
When the French board takes pos-
session of Ridgeway at the end of this
school year, Ridgeway students are
supposed to move into Central Park.
However, Central Park likely won't be
available for those students until Janu-
ary of next year because pupils from
that school can't move out until the
new Attersley school is completed.
However, Ms. Brown says the
French board may be willing to lease
some space at Ridgeway to the public
board to house students until construc-
tion is finished at the new Attersley
school.
"The board may have some space
available at Ridgeway next year to be
able to house some of the Ridgeway
students until Attersley is ready in Jan -

And, as for the remainder of the stu-
dents, Ms. Brown says there's no an-
swer yet regarding where they'll go as
of September.
"There should have been a back-up
plan," says Ridgeway parent Jane
McAllister.
"This is not good planning.
"This is an outrageous scenario for
us," Mr. Balka says, noting parents will
continue to pressure the Education Im-
provement Commission, the provincial
body overseeing the transfer of
schools, to seek a delay in the transfer
of their school to the French board.
"Me plan is to try to convince the
EIC to use their mandate to do some-
thing about this scenario," Mr. Balka
says.
He adds the EIC has the power tc
delay the transfer and says that would
minimize any disruptions for students.
