Durham Regional Police said the victim was confronted by the trio at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Kingston and Rosebank roads. "He was told to give them his money and when he refused they nook his wallet from his back pocket." Sergeant Jim Grimley said. The teenager was robbed of the $50 he was carrying in the wallet. The charitable organization, which helps children with disahilities train and participate in sports, will open a satellite office in Whitby, serving residents in Durham Region, Joe Millage, managing director of Variety Village, explains the new loca- tion will loan special equipment to chil- dren who need it so they can participate in activities and sports they normally would not be able to. Equipment includes arm crank cy- cles, sport and all -terrain wheelchairs, monoskis and ice sledges, a sled with blades that a child sits on to moves around the ice using small poles. "We're there so that if a boy who's in a Grade 3 class that goes ice skating but can't skate because of balance or what- ever, we would loan them not only one, but a couple of sledges so the other chil- dren can try them;" he says. This service has been offered by Va- riety Village in the past, working with school boards and children's treatment centres, however because of its Scarbor- ough location many people were not taking advantage of the service. In addition to loaning equipment for one-time use, Variety Village can also loan items to families who are consider- ing purchasing equipment for their child, but want to try out first before in- vesting a lot of money. The office would also have contacts of equipment suppli- ers for families looking to purchase. "Unfortunately when you have a dis- ability the cost of equipment can be pro- hibitive;' Mr. Millage says, explaining why a lending service is needed for these type of items. Some of the equipment will he pro- vided free of charge while others require a small fee to cover the maintenance of the equipment. The decision to open a Durham of- fice was the result of long-term involve- ment with the community through out- reach programs, he says. The Durham location "is also the pilot site for 1 I other satellite sites we are hoping to open over the next five yam" Although the Whitby office is ex- pected to open in March, a location has not been chosen. Child Find offers Kid Check this weekend The Durham chapter of Child Find Ontario is hold- ing an open house and of- fering 'Kid Check' finger- printing Saturday, Jan. 23 from I to 4 p.m. at 110 Hunt St., Unit 2, in Ajax, across from the Legion hall. The chapter will be cel- ebrating the opening of its new office and its fifth an- niversary. Everyone is invited to attend and join in the fes- tivities. The good news is that the less fortu- nate people in our midst have a lot of neighbours in the two communities who care about them. Proof of that comes from the St. Paul's on -the -Hill Community Food Bank which reports area residents and businesses have been so generous the past few weeks that the cupboards are bursting rather than bare. It seems the individual. self -orga- nized fogad drives Ajax and Pickering citizens and companies held over the holiday season have so filled the shelves at the St. Paul's food bank that needy families and individuals will be allowed to visit twice a month over the winter in- stead of only once, as is usual. St. Paul's now has about a three -to -five-month supply of food. In the past, single. monthly visits to the food hank have provided individual and family clients with a five-day supply of food. Now they will have access to a 10 -day supply. While this winter that lies ahead might be a cold one, at least it will be a season of sustenance for arca residents who might otherwise go hungry. It's a problem that's "unacceptable:' Councillor Mark Holland said in bring- ing forth his motion. "It's an affront to human dignity" that so many area chil- dren live in poverty that they have tc rely on the St. Paul's food bank to provide nourishment. His resolution rcvcaled that more than 50 per cent of the clients of the oral bank are children under 18. compared to about 37 per cent of people using similar facilities in Toronto. Ccun. Holland points out the number of children in Ontario living in poverty has grown to 5.38.(XX) now from 254•()00 in 1989• the year federal and provincial initiatives were announced to eliminate child povcrtv. Regardless of the structural deterioration of the building. it simply cannot house the parishioners because their numbers No common sense in court rulings What do judges think about when making a decision:' Does common sense have a place in the law? Last week, the B.C. Supreme Court ruled possessing child pornography isn't a crime. In his ruling, Mr. Justice Duncan Shaw said outlawing the own- ing of child pornography violates an individual's constitutional freedoms. "The invasion of freedom of ex- pression and personal privacy is pro- found." Justice Shaw wrote. "lite prohibition extends to all per- sons including those who make no harmful use of pornography. The pro- hibition also includes pedophiles, who, instead of preying on children, use pornography for very private purposes. "'lire intrusion into freedom of ex- pression and the right of privacy is so profound that it is not outweighed by the limited beneficial effects of the prohibition." Now, I'm as liberal as they come and just about any restriction on per- sonal freedom is anathema to me. But, this ruling just doesn't make sense. It doesn't consider the making of child pornography. His story in Tues- day's paper reported area lawyers rep- resenting individuals charged with possessing child pom are taking a very close look at the B.C. ruling. "We have the judicial blessing from the west and of course we are going to examine (the judgment) and use it in the context of our own case:' said Os- hawa lawyer Bernie O'Brien. In December, Justice Harry LaForme ruled Mitchiel (!Nicky) McArthur isn't a dangerous offender, although he's committed 50 robberies, been convicted of 150 offences and has shot six people, including four police officers — the only person in Canadi- an history to have shot four officers. If Mr. McArthur isn't a dangerous offender, who is? In 1994, he and an accomplice tried to rob a Port Perry bank. In the failed attempt, five people, including three Durham police, were shot. In his ruling, Justice LaForme noted, An entire community was ter- rorized" when Mr. McArthur and an accomplice "turned that small commu- nity into a war -zone." Yet, the judge de- cided Mr. McArthur shouldn't be locked up for the rest of his life. As a News Advertiser editorial asked following the ruling, "What do you have to do to be declared a dan- gerous offender in the country?" Both rulings are being appealed. Thankfully. But, I have to go back to one of my original questions. Is common sense a consideration when a judge makes a ruling? Based on these two cases, it isn't. i have increased dramatically. Presently, the church has more than I.0(X) members but the week- ly collection does not reflect that since ttt, parishioners seem to be very conscnative with their contri- butions. Having said that, then we must agree that the funds needed to repair this church would be wasted if spent on repairs. This church can no longer serve 1 the purpose it was intended for IW years ago, and therefore, has out- grown its usefulness to the present parishioners 100 years later. The 'friends' need to rethink 1 their position and act in a selfless manner, the way Jesus would, and sacrifice their sentimental attach- ment to the old church. The women who flocked after the handsome 1oen- eral became known as Hookcr's Wornen. And. later. dust hookers. Or .\Irs. Quack and her seven duck- lings. sculpted of bronze and %ad- dling in slightly slightly -larger -than - life glory along a stone walk in the Public Garden. So enamoured were visitors with the work. they wanted the same for their city. The sculptress ohli_*ed, but insisted ltlrs Quack he placed on dirt from Boston Public Gardens. And so another \Its. Quack leads her brood into eternity on Boston soil — in :Moscow. Skirting Bunker Hill we are treated to sonic newer history — the site of the Brinks' Robbery in the 1950s. when a gang of burglars made off with mil- lions. And thus ended our introduction to Boston's many attractions, offering us a glimpse of what was yet to he dis- covered in this historic city.
