Union launches complaint over letter mailed to members By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A deal which included a 9.6- per-cent raise over three years for cops is off the table, the Durham Regional Police Ser- vices Board announced Tuesday afternoon. The board and the police association have been involved in acrimonious negotiations for months. On Dec. 3, the board sent a two-page let- ter to union members highlighting its most recent offer, including a 9.6-per-cent pay increase over three years, a capping of sick leave payouts at a maximum of six months upon retirement for new hires only, and other improved benefits. Association members were informed they had until Dec. 8 at 4 p.m. to accept the offer before it expired. The letter came as a response to the union’s latest offer, which police board chairman Terry Clayton said contained another half million dollars-worth of benefits, which was unacceptable to the board. “When we said there was no more money, we meant it,” he said in an interview prior to the board’s announcement that its rescinded the offer. The Durham Regional Police Association took issue with the Dec. 8 deadline. As planned before the deal was taken off the table, the union will still be asking its members to vote on the board’s offer on Dec. 15. “They have a right to know everything that’s in that offer,” said Mr. Ca- vanaugh. Meanwhile, the union says the letter sent out to members violates the Police Services Act because the board can- not bargain directly with the membership and the association has launched a complaint with the On- tario Civilian Commis- sion on Police Services. “The letter they sent out ... it looks like a con- tract offer to me. It has salaries and benefits,” said Mr. Cavanaugh. Mr. Clayton disagreed. “They have the right to do what they want, but we checked, obviously, with our legal people be- fore we did this,” he said. He said management can send out a letter to the union membership if they don’t feel they’ve been informed by the bargaining team. “We’re not negotiat- ing with them privately. We’re just making them aware of what has been offered,” said the chair- man. However the union said there are discrepan- cies between the board’s most recent offer and the letter’s contents. Barring an approval of the offer by the union members, which the as- sociation does not rec- ommend, it seems all but certain that both sides are headed to arbitration in early 2009. That’s exactly where they were heading before this latest flurry of offers and counter offers. As an essential service, police cannot strike or be locked out by manage- ment. But residents should expect longer waits on the phone for customer service By Parvaneh Pessian ppessian@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Mail sent during this holiday season should arrive safely and on time despite strike action at Canada Post locations. The issue affects staff- ing numbers in the support departments but residents shouldn’t be concerned about delivery delays, says manager Steve James. “The actual folks that are on strike are call-centre agents and some techni- cians,” he said, while taking calls to fill in for the short- age in staff. “We’re taking longer to answer the phones and I’m not able to do as much on the phone as a regular call-centre agent but as far as delivery of the mail, all items are being delivered and there’s no impact to the operational side of the busi- ness.” The strike began in No- vember across the country involving more than 2,000 administrative and techni- cal workers. A notice on Canada Post’s website reads that “extenu- ating circumstances” have led to a limited number of customer service agents and as a result, only urgent and critical services on a limited basis can be performed. “As of right now today, to my knowledge, no areas are being affected and ev- erything is being delivered and processed as usual,” Mr. James said, adding that demonstrations in some areas have attributed to the delays. While negotiations con- tinue, employees at Canada Post say they look forward to resuming full customer service as soon as is pos- sible. “Mail is being delivered and everybody is working hard to get it there because it’s obviously an important time of the year.” Post office strike won’t disrupt mail deliveryBoard, union likely headed to arbitration ✦ Board from page 1 OFF SELECTED STYLES Oshawa Centre-beside Sears STARTS THURSDAY DECEMBER 11 1400 Hopkins St. Whitby (JUST NORTHWEST OF THE AMC THEATRE) 905-665-8119 ext. 242 8080SAVE UP TO Store hours: Monday to Wednesday 10am-6pm Thursday 10am-7pm • Friday 10am to 7pm Saturday 9am-5pm • Sunday 11am to 4pm $5 LADIES SLIPPERS ONLY $15 LADIES DRESS FLATS FROM $20 LADIES DRESS SHOES ONLY $2250 KIDS WINTER BOOTS ONLY $70 LADIES BOOTS FROM$32 LADIES DRESS BOOT ONLY INVENTORY BLOW-OUT %% WAREHOUSE SALESALE 5050 %%OFF ALL KIDS WINTER BOOTS OVER 15,000 PAIRS OF BOOTS, SHOES AND SLIPPERS IN-STOCK REG. $44.99 *SELECTED STYLES... Store employees in Santa hats flipped sandwiches as fast as people could pay for them, as part of a week-long fundraiser in support of the family, which was attacked by a knife-wielding man on Nov. 29. Parents Rick and Leslie Kelly fought back against the attacker in an effort to protect the five boys in their Glen Street townhouse that night. Leslie died soon after the attack and days later their three-year-old son, Nathan, succumbed to his injuries at the Hospital for Sick Children. The tragedy deepened again last Friday, when Rick died from complications of his injuries just days before he was due to be released from hospital. The past week has seen the community rally to help the Kelly children left behind -- five-year-old Riley, who is still recovering in hospital, 11-year-old Brandon, and Rick’s half brother, 13-year-old Steven. “I’m a mom and my heart just breaks for those little boys,” said Whitby resident Kath- erine Vanderwyk, as she traded a toonie for a sandwich and drink. “I’m here shopping for my kids and I can’t take my mind off those Kelly kids and what they must be going through.” The north Oshawa Wal-Mart started the fundraiser Dec. 5 and will continue it until Dec. 12. As of Monday, about $6,000 had been raised, with all proceeds going to the trust fund set up for the Kelly family. Friends of the family are also planning two benefit events on Saturday, Dec. 20. The first takes place at Kedron Dells Golf Course, 2400 Ritson Rd. N., from 4 p.m. to midnight with raffles, a cash bar and light snacks. For more information or to donate auction items, e-mail kellyfamilytrust@gmail. com. The second benefit gets underway at 8 p.m. at Park Place Bar and Grill, 799 Park Rd. S., and runs until 2 a.m. It will feature a raffle, 50/50 draw and live entertainment by Sons of Adam and Accident Prone. For more information, contact Renee Lawrence at 905-999-5019. Tickets for both events are $5, with all proceeds going to the trust fund set up for the Kellys. Toys for the Kelly children are also being collected at the Oshawa Tim Hortons at 1251 Simcoe St. N., and the Pickering Flea Market, among other locations. Family spokesman Rob Hoddinott said support for all the efforts has been over- whelming. Friends of the family have secured storage for donated toys and he estimated three full courier trucks’ worth of toys have been col- lected. With that in mind, Mr. Hoddinott encour- aged people planning to donate toys to the Kelly children to consider a donation to the trust fund instead. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, December 11, 2008 durhamregion.com Government’s economic update missed mark To the editor: Re: ‘Deficit-free plan offers real leadership for Canadians’, Nov. 28, News Advertiser editorial. The idea that, let’s just carry on, is no lon- ger acceptable. We are in a recession. The Big Three automakers should be pushed into receivership so the companies can restructure for the economic times. Or, everyone at the company takes a pay cut of 25 per cent (or more). I mean everyone top to bottom, before they get one cent of my tax dollars. The problem with the economic update is that it is not looking at redemptive tech- nologies to stimulate growth. The sooner we stop sending money out of our economy for energy and we start producing and using Canadian energy the stronger our economy will be. Where is the money for natural gas conversion of trans- port trucks, solar, wind, small-scale hydro, home co-generation heating/electrical generation systems. That is the forward thinking that only a government can stimu- late. And, let’s be clear, it should never be a long-term subsidization like we have done to ruin the Big Three automakers. The continuous government cash flow to build here rather than there has to stop. The government should provide an economic environment better than anywhere else. If anything, there should be a tax on cars not produced in Canada to level the playing field. Allan Williams Ajax D o they still have ‘Wanted’ post- ers in post offices anymore? You know, those flyers with the grainy mug shot of some hideous, sneering felon smack dab in the middle? Maybe a reward of several thousands of dollars below that. And of course, those famous words ‘Dead or Alive.’ I’ve never seen a Wanted poster up here. Not in my little town. That’s probably due to the fact that there’s very little crime of note in these parts and when something does happen we generally know very quickly who the culprit is. We also handle it in our own way. That’s why we have the Lions Club. You don’t want to mess with those guys. Nothing strikes fear into the heart of a no-goodnik like seeing the boys in the purple and gold balaclavas at your front door in the dead of night. Even with very little crime though, I think there may yet be some use in the Wanted poster. There are still, after all, plenty of people in want of something; Wanted - - Babysitter, Wanted -- Ride into Toronto, Wanted -- Open minded female with Bass Boat. And what about all of those little misde- meanors that go unpunished but which rankle the law-abiding citizen? Wouldn’t the post office wall be a great place to “out” those in the community who aren’t pulling their civic weight? Wanted -- Ed “No Bag” Henderson -- for letting his pooch crap on other peoples lawn. Wanted -- Thelma “Guzzler” Moffatt - - for watering her stinking, prize-winning hollyhocks in the middle of a heat wave. Wanted -- The Steckler Gang -- Vince, Tommy, William and little Clara -- for teasing the Melnick’s Beagle on the way to school. Wanted -- Jack “Hearing Aid” Melnick -- for leaving his Beagle outside barking all day. Wanted -- Shirley and Royce “Grinchy- pants” Barlow -- for only clearing their own snow and never once using that jeezly huge snow blower to plow out poor old Mrs. Tompkins with the gout, next door. Wanted -- Pete “Ace” Devereaux -- for marking up the Cenotaph with that stupid- ity of his. Wanted -- Old Man Devereaux -- for rais- ing such a jackass. Wanted -- The Larraby boy, not the fat one, the skinny one with the wonky eye -- for telling everybody who would listen that there weren’t no Santa Claus. Wanted -- The Betchlers, The O’Gradys, The Robertsons and Wilf Kinsey for closing up on Halloween night and making it look like nobody was home when we all knew you were just too cheap to buy candy. Wanted -- Joe ‘Stink Bomb’ O’Hara -- for spreading manure on the day of the Miller girl’s outdoor wedding reception. Wanted -- Abel Dobson -- for riding the hell out of that sweet, good-natured kid of his at every darn baseball, hockey and football game he ever played. Wanted -- Everybody -- for parking in the handicapped space at the Bank. Hmmm . . . on second thought, maybe we ought to just leave well enough alone. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic- writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. He is currently co-starring in the CBC hit sitcom, Little Mosque on the Prairie. Cash critical as Canadian automakers gear up for survival mode A s lawmakers in Washington appear to close in on a $15-bil- lion bailout package for General Motors and Chrysler, it appears Jim Flaherty could become Canada’s $6-bil- lion-plus man -- with a little help from his provincial government friends. That Canadian dollar figure is the one sought by the three national automak- ers this side of the 49th parallel that are looking for loans and lines of credit from the feds and the Ontario govern- ment to stay in business. The automotive market is precarious, especially for Canadian subsidiaries of their American parent companies that export the vast majority of their produc- tion to the U. S. For that reason, imme- diate support here is critical. And, it seems that support is immi- nent. Such action comes at a time when the political situation in Ottawa is about as fluid as it gets. While Parliament takes a break -- or is prorogued as it is officially dubbed -- the Liberals have been work- ing overtime to get their leadership act together. The embarrassed Stephane Dion, who couldn’t put together a decent vid- eotape of himself replying to Stephen Harper’s speech to the nation last week, finally pulled the plug on his leadership long past its best before date. Mr. Dion never seemed comfortable in the lead- er’s chair and having decided to step down after the Oct. 14 election, he was definitely the wrong person to lead the coalition. Clearly, his own party -- and probably members of the NDP and Bloc who are tied in with the fortunes of the coalition -- saw the light. It is now up to Michael Ignatieff, who came second to Mr. Dion in the 2006 leadership race, to face off against Mr. Harper. It will fall largely on the shoul- ders of Mr. Harper and Mr. Ignatieff to show us the way forward out of the eco- nomic mess we are in through 2009 and beyond. Canadians will need fresh ideas and new approaches to the problems we face. But as far as we in Durham and in Ontario are concerned, the best Christ- mas present we could receive would be a big boost to the auto sector, the lifeblood of our economy. That will at least give us a fighting chance. For that, we will have to rely on the feds and the Province to deliver. The coupon will also apply toward a taxi ride in north Durham from Fox Fires Taxi and Sunderland Taxi. As well, Durham Region Transit will offer free transit on Dec. 31 with spon- sorship from Ontario Power Generation and the Manufacturing Technology Cen- tre. “People need to understand the seri- ous effects and consequences of driv- ing impaired,” said Pam Frisby, a public health nurse with the health depart- ment. “Driving over the limit can cost lives, and there could be serious legal implications and costs amounting to over $20,000, which is much more than the cost of a ride home.” Last year, 113 drivers were arrested for impaired driving during the Durham Regional Police Festive RIDE program. One-time severance costs will be about $850,000, paid out over the next few quarters, a press release stated. “We appreciate the many contri- butions these employees have made to AirIQ,” Mr. Willey said, “and while these actions are difficult, they are necessary considering the current economic conditions and the com- pany’s commitment to continue to reduce operating expenses.” The “realignment process” began more than a year ago and “has re- sulted in continuous reduction of expenses and operating losses.” In 2007, the company went from 123 employees to 59. AirIQ also announced Wednes- day the Toronto Stock Exchange is reviewing the company’s eligibility for continued listing. If it does not meet the TSX’s listing requirements by July 1, 2009, the company’s shares will be delisted a month later. AirIQ also has an office in San Diego, Calif,, but the job cuts will take place in Pickering, Mr. Willey said. Q. How important is treating a hearing loss in a person diagnosed with Alzheimer’s? A. Some researchers have long suggested a strong, even causal, connection between untreated hearing loss and memory and cognitive defi cits. Auditory processing in older adults with untreated hearing loss can mimic the various communicative and psychosocial behaviors of dementia. (Alzheimer’s disease being one cause of dementia). Some research has shown that certain factors, for example, untreated hearing loss, at the time of the diagnosis, indicate a higher risk for a more rapid decline. Others believe that it is entirely arguable that the most effective and most pervasive way to delay if not prevent the unnecessary advancement of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s for most people is to assure appropriate amplifi cation for hearing loss. Written by Audiologist, Lila O’Neill, founder of the fi rst Audiology Clinics to dispense hearing aids in Durham Region: Ajax Pickering Audiology Clinic, Bayly Audiology Services, Whitby Hearing Centre. Q. Are the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease similar to those with untreated hearing loss? A. Yes, and according to Max Chartrand, PhD, (2001), the comparison is as follows: Depression, anxiety, disorientation Depression, anxiety, feelings of isolation Reduced language comprehension Reduced communication ability Impaired memory (esp. short-term memory) Reduced cognitive input Inappropriate psychosocial responses Inappropriate psychosocial responses Loss of ability to recognize (agnosia) Reduced mental scores Denial, defensiveness, negativity Denial, heightened defensiveness, negativity Distrust and suspicion Distrust and paranoia WHITBY HEARING CENTRE 905-666-7726 1032 Brock St. S., Unit 4 Whitby, ON L1N 4L8 BAYLY AUDIOLOGY SERVICES 905-426-4000 95 Bayly St. W., Suite 502 Ajax, ON L1S 7K8 AJAX-PICKERING AUDIOLOGY CLINIC 905-831-8311 1885 Glenanna Rd., Suite 104 Pickering, ON L1V 6R6 Advanced care... tomorrow’s hearing today! •3 year supply of batteries •3 year warranty •3 year in-house service A VAILABLE Word-of-Mouth… Our #1 Referral Source! A foot bath is truly an inviting way to detox the body especially when it claims to detoxify the body better and more efficiently than any herbal or nutritional supplement you can buy. Participants having an ioncleanse treatment simply take off their shoes and socks and immerse their feet in a warm foot bath for 30 relaxing minutes. It is not an ordi- nary foot bath though, this foot bath contains water and sea salt which carries a gentle electrical charge from a multiple-metallic array placed in the water. This causes the metals within the array, in combination with the water and salt to generate positive and negative charged ions by separating oxygen and hydrogen in the water. If all this sounds too confusing, perhaps you should try a treatment and see for yourself. It is a very comfortable way to facilitate detoxification even with people that have a serious toxic overload. Ioncleanse sessions have been referred to as... getting the issues out of the tissues! When using the IonCleanse array, water is absorbed directly into human tissue. The fluctuating pH causes antimicrobial activity that occurs metabolically with the session. Yes, the fluctuating pH that occurs dur- ing an IonCleanse treatment is like a lethal weapon to bacteria. As a result, whole body detoxification takes place without any effort or discomfort to the person, and by means of a comforting foot bath. Reports have been published on the measurement of heavy met- als found in the water after IonCleanse ses- sions. Some of the heavy metals measured were lead, copper, arsenic and aluminum. People have reported feeling lighter, more energetic, and relieved of pain even after one session. Particular improvement has been noted with symptoms of gout, edema, tired achy legs and overall lack of energy. In- dividuals that suffer more chronic conditions are sometimes recommended to have more than one session. If you would like to experi- ence the benefit of an IonCleanse session in the Pickering or Bowmanville area, contact Karen Steward at (905) 837-6627. Answer: Cravings are our body’s way of talking to us. When we eat foods that are defi cient in nutrients, such as fast, processed, refi ned, microwave or fried foods, our bodies do not have the materials, aka “nutrients”, they need to build cells correctly and run optimally. Therefore, our bodies, being as smart as they are, send out a “craving” to get us to eat more food! The key is to provide our bodies with whole foods that are nutrient dense, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, emphasizing low-glycemic carbohydrates, essential fats and lean proteins in the right ratios. Eating the correct balance of fats, proteins and carbohydrates is what we at U Weight Loss call eating in “hormonal balance”. This reduces cravings, fuels our bodies for optimal vitality and energy, helps prevent disease and makes weight loss safe and easy! Optimal health is the most important thing at U Weight Loss and can only be achieved through BALANCE - this is what we teach our clients at the clinics! durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 10 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, December 11, 2008 Give the Gift ofGive the Gift of HealthHealth & Happiness!& Happiness! Much to your dismay, so are all the extra calories you’ve consumed over the holiday season. It is for this reason that the top New Year’s Resolution year after year is losing weight and getting healthy! At U Weight Loss we coach our clients on how to avoid the common pitfalls of the holiday season because it is important to learn how to deal with the many situations in our life that threaten to spoil your weight loss goals! There are always going to be holidays and birthdays and vacations, so your best bet is to learn how to deal with them and that’s what I’m here to share with you! 1. Don’t Skip Meals Many people think that the best way to deal with a festive dinner is to “save up” their calories for the day. The reality is that this plan of action does not work! Skipping meals only makes you more likely to binge eat in the evening. Your body is extremely intelligent and if it doesn’t get the nutrients it needs, it will inevitably send out an intense craving and believe me, what your body wants, it gets!! Instead of arriving for a holiday party or dinner starving, eat your balanced regular meals throughout the day so that you maintain control and don’t succumb to cravings that could ultimately sabotage your weight loss goals. 2. Watch the bubbly Alcohol is like hooking up an IV of sugar directly to your bloodstream! It is full of empty calories with little to no nutritional value and it certainly is a HUGE factor in holiday weight gain! Not only does it cause an increase in your blood sugar levels which in turn causes your body to store fat, but it also increases your appetite and makes choosing healthy food even more difficult! I suggest a small glass of red wine if you absolutely must partake in the festivities and otherwise try having some sparkling water with lemon or lime in a fancy glass, you’ll still feel like a part of the festivities and keep your wits about you! 3. Try some healthy substitutions At U Weight Loss we have provided our clients with some amazing holiday recipes such as egg nog smoothies and almond protein balls so that they can partake in some holiday favorites while still choosing nutrient dense food. It is important not to completely deprive yourself of traditional holiday favourites; there are always ways to make your favourite treats healthy! Try mashed sweet potatoes instead of mashed white potatoes or opt for whole grain dinner rolls and use low fat cheese when make some of your favourite vegetable recipes. 4. Make sure all your meals and snacks are balanced It is important to have lean protein, good fat and low glycemic carbohydrates at every meal and snack time in order to facilitate healthy weight loss and balance your hormones. Eating the correct amount of protein at every meal is especially important because it releases a hormone called glucagon which stimulates the breakdown of fat! Some great protein sources are egg whites, whey protein powder, lean beef, turkey and cottage cheese. 5. Don’t forget to take your vitamins Supplementing your diet with a high quality multivitamin is essential. With our busy lifestyles it is difficult to get in the required nine-13 serv- ings of fruits and vegetables we need daily for optimal health and to prevent degenerative disease and the right multivitamin can bridge this gap. However, that’s not the only reason I recommend supplementation, many of my clients are surprised to learn and experience for themselves how the proper supplementation can prevent cravings and assist them in their quest to reach their target weight! 6. Sweat a little harder Let’s admit that the holidays are difficult and we are all going to indulge a little. If you fall off track, try to balance your over- indulgence with a little extra ex- ercise, not only will it help get you back on the health wagon, the extra endorphins will help you feel great. Remember that a combination of weight bearing and cardiovascular exercise has been clinically proven to be most effective. 7. Stay hydrated I know you have heard it over and over again, but it is worth repeating! Make sure you drink at least eight glasses of water daily, more if you exercise. You will be amazed at how energized you feel when properly hydrated and not only that but it even prevents cravings as water makes you feel full longer, decreases bloating and water retention and even helps digestion. 8. Go Green and Avoid Coffee Drinking three cups of green tea daily has been shown to increase metabolic rate and speed up fat oxidation. Compounds in green tea called cathechin polyphenols appear to speed up the rate at which calories are burned leading to weight loss. Green tea is also loaded with disease preventing anti-oxidants. Coffee on the other hand triggers food cravings, stimu- lates the appetite, in- creases stress (stress hormones increase body fat), and caffeine also increases insulin resistance.
