About 370 members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1785 work in Durham’s waste management, road maintenance, traffic control, sanitary sewer and municipal water supply opera- tions. However, Local 1785 president Dan Mc- Gregor said the union and the Region are headed for mediation on Oct. 10 and the union is still looking for a deal. If they don’t reach one, the union will be in a legal strike position. “We have full intention to go to media- tion still, to work hard at a settlement. It’s disappointing the Region doesn’t seem to be taking that stance along with us,” said Mr. McGregor in response to a press release from the Region on the issue. The Region says it has offered the union a three-year contract with a 3.25-per cent wage increase each year and the offer is identical to the one accepted by indoor regional workers. But Mr. McGregor said the issue isn’t the wage increase. Instead, the sticking points are job reviews that the union say would determine whether the employees are being paid fairly and new working sched- ules being proposed by the Region. “For the schedule end of things, the Re- gion is asking for major schedule changes and we are trying to work with them to come up with something that’s fair and we haven’t had any luck to date,” said Mr. Mc- Gregor. However, the Region said what the union is omitting is that the job review would lead to an eight per cent salary hike. “I don’t mind reviewing everyone’s po- sition, but it’s not going to result in an eight per cent increase .... I’m not going to saddle the taxpayers with that,” said Garth Johns, Durham’s commissioner of human resources. In terms of scheduling, Mr. Johns said the Region wants to be able to schedule evening shifts without paying overtime. “If there’s a snowstorm we don’t want to BOOTING UP FOR A GOOD CAUSE AJ Groen/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — The Pickering Professional Firefighters’ Association’s annual Boot Drive is at various locations this Saturday, Oct. 4. Members of the Durham Regional Police Association (DRPA) meeting in Oshawa Wednesday night voted unanimously in favour of a motion to form a job ac- tion committee that could recommend cops begin their protest campaign next week. “The committee will be meeting as early as Mon- day and job action could begin that day,” association president Doug Cavanaugh said after the meeting in an Oshawa hotel conference room. “The committee has marching orders from the membership and we have made some preparations.” Mr. Cavanaugh said DRPA members are frus- trated that they’ve been without a contract since the beginning of the year. He said members of the re- gion’s police services board have delayed a new deal with the association’s 1,100 uniform and civilian mem- bers. “We’ve been prepared to bargain since April and the police services board has been dragging its feet,” Mr. Cavanaugh said. “These are not grandiose contract negotiations,” he said. “(A contract) just brings stability. It shows respect.” Negotiations between the police and the services board have been rocky in the past, with talks going to arbitration in 2006 and 2007, Mr. Cavanaugh said. “We’ve had a contract for only two months out of the last three years,” he said. Police Services Board chairman Terry Clayton said the board has sched- uled talks with the associa- tion this coming weekend and members are hopeful headway will be made. “I don’t concur with (Mr. Cavanaugh) we’re dragging our feet,” Mr. Clayton said. “As far as the board’s concerned we need to do this, but we have to be very conscious of financial im- plications.” Mr. Clayton said associa- tion members are entitled to take job action to ex- press their frustration over the status of their contract. The coming weekend will prove pivotal; two days of talks are planned and members will be watching closely as they contemplate their first job action in sev- eral years, Mr. Cavanaugh said. Members present at the closed-door meeting ex- pressed frustration over the ongoing lack of a current contract as well as staffing, a perennial issue with Dur- ham cops and their man- agement. The growing region re- quires more front-line offi- cers to deal with a spiralling number of calls for service, Mr. Cavanaugh said. “There’s no doubt we’re busier,” he said. “Calls for service are waiting hours if not days. “I think the public ex- pects and deserves better.” Mr. Clayton said he re- mains optimistic about the prospect for progress when the two sides sit down for talks this weekend, but warned a new agreement may be a while in coming. “I’m not holding my breath,” he said. “But I am cautiously op- timistic.” Hardiman Mount & Associates Insurance is operated by Johnson Inc., is a licensed insurance broker. Nicholas Hosein, 26, of Benton Crescent, left his home on Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. He was last seen the following day in a coffee shop at the corner of Dixie Road and Finch Avenue. Mr. Hosein is described as East Indian, five-feet nine-inches tall, about 150 pounds with a shaved head. He was last seen wear- ing a white shirt with bur- gundy horizontal stripes and khaki pants. He may be wearing black/blue skater shoes and carrying a red tote bag. Both police and his family are concerned for his safety since he needs medication for some men- tal health issues. He is believed to be in the downtown Toronto area and left home with limited financial resourc- es. Mr. Hosein likes read- ing, libraries and park set- tings. Anyone with informa- tion regarding his location is asked to contact Dur- ham police at 1-888-579- 1520. call people in on overtime, there should be people ready to hit the road,” he said. So far, an essential services agreement with the union was not reached, meaning management would run services such as water and sewer treatment facilities in the event of a strike. The Region reminded residents that municipal drinking water is safe. Should the employees hit the picket lines, all water testing will continue, however the Re- gion says boil water advisories may be issued. Any such adviso- ries would be sent out as public service announcements to local media and the information would be available on the Region’s web- site, www.region.durham.on.ca. Garbage, recycling and green bin kitchen waste pick-up would continue as the work is contracted out, however there may be delays. The three Region-owned waste transfer stations in Brock, Scugog and Oshawa would be closed. Mr. McGregor said the union would discuss an essential ser- vices agreement when they felt they would be withdrawing their services. “We’re taking this day by day, we haven’t said we’re withdraw- ing our services yet, we’re still going through the bargaining pro- cess.” Mr. Johns said the Region is committed to the bargaining pro- cess and plans to stay with media- tion beyond Oct. 10, if necessary. He said there won’t be an em- ployer-initiated lockout of work- ers. “You can absolutely be assured that we will not lock anybody out. If anything happens it’s the union’s initiative, not ours.” Durham residents are being asked to tune into local media for updates on the situation and instructions on what to do in the event of a strike. When asked if the Region re- leased details of the situation to light a fire under the union, Mr. Johns responded it was more to inform the public of what was unfolding. “At the same time if we com- municate to the public we’ve put more than a three per cent per year (raise) on the table and they’re turning their nose up, I think we’re being more than fair.” Mr. McGregor, meanwhile, said he felt there would be a likely conclusion to the talks, but the Region’s news release about the situation has made him unsure. “I thought they were willing to sit down at the mediation process and try to work out our difference, I’m not sure that’s the case any- more.” To learn about any of Durham Region’s waste management programs, visit our website www.durhamregionwaste.ca Send your waste related letters, questions, or comments to katherine.ross@region.durham.on.ca Katherine Ross-Perron, Municipality Of Durham, 605 Rossland Rd. The Pickering-Scarbor- ough East federal candi- dates discussed the issues at Wednesday’s Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade all-candi- dates’ debate. On the topic of research and develop- ment, Green Party candidate Jason Becevello noticed each candidate that spoke before him talked about the need for a focus on the environ- ment, such as renewable en- ergy. He said it’s important to find safe alternatives to toxic chemicals and added the science adviser should have never been cut by the Conservative government. “We believe the science adviser position should be reinstated and (report) back to the House of Commons,” he said. Gary Dale, stepping in for New Democratic Party can- didate, Andrea Moffat, since she was unable to attend, said “in the 21st century, green economy will be the one that survives.” Chaitanya Kalevar, the Canadian Action Party can- didate, later in the debate criticized the continuous use of nuclear energy. “We are 63 years into the nuclear age and none of these candidates have a clue how to bring it to an end,” he said. He added he’s the only candidate without signs, which just end up in landfill. George Khouri, the Con- servative Party candidate, said research and develop- ment is key and Canada has to lead in technology in order to participate in the global economy. Liberal candidate Dan McTeague noted his efforts to help students, such as his ongoing work attempting to make RESPs tax deductible, and praised the University of Ontario Institute and Tech- nology (UOIT) for its work in helping Canada become a “world leader in cyber crime.” On the topic of infra- structure, Mr. McTeague criticized the Conservative Party’s choice to fund “a train not to Durham” as part of its investment in public transit, despite other needs in Durham. He said there is no need for a train from Pe- terborough to Union Station; there should be one from Scarborough to UOIT. Mr. Khouri fired back, saying “We have 13 years of backbenchers from the Re- gion of Durham,” indicating that’s why there’s been a lack of work on Durham roads. Mr. Dale said the govern- ment shouldn’t simply focus on more roads, but on in- frastructure planning, such as traffic solutions and using more rail for transporting goods. He also said with the current food crisis, “the Pickering airport has to be stopped. It’s a bad use of the land.” Mr. Becevello later said his party believes in building the local economy and commu- nities and the government should support farmers. On the issue of health care and care for the elder- ly, Christian Heritage Party candidate Rick Chue, a per- sonal support worker (PSE), thinks it’s important to have the option of private health care. “I believe that the best care for the elderly is many times in the home,” he said. Mr. Khouri said the best care is from families “and they should be given a tax credit.” Mr. Kalevar said “we believe that any public in- terest project like health should be funded through the Bank of Canada with its low interest rates.” Mr. Chue said the CHP is pro-life and pro-family, and believes the government should run the country as a “prosperous, upright nation under God. “The CHP believes in so- cial, moral and fiscal policies that have worked in the past and will work in the future,” he said. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 3, 2008 durhamregion.com O f all the people and all the stories that I’ve written on during my 21 years as a journalist, her story was one of the most compelling to me. It was about pulling one’s self up by the boots traps, about arriving at a crossroads and making a decision to break free of for- mer habits -- dropping them cold turkey -- and instituting new ones. It was also about replacing self-doubt with self-discovery, and about carving out a niche in a physically demanding sport that, only a few years earlier, would have been unthinkable. Nine years ago, as a 40-year-old mother of one, Nancy Sinclair said her life was in crisis. Feeling the stress of her busy career and smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, she recalls her 40th birthday, usually a happy milestone, being one of her saddest experi- ences. “On my 40th birthday I cried all day. I took a bottle of wine and a pack of ciga- rettes to bed and I cried because I felt so miserable and lost. My husband had to cancel my birthday party. I wouldn’t go. I refused,” said the Pickering resident in a 2005 interview. “I went through every drive-thru imagin- able. I have a very stressful job, so I worked late and before I knew it I had gained 40 pounds and I felt I had no time to exercise. I was tired and I couldn’t get up in the morn- ings. I was really unhappy. One day I just said, ‘no, it’s my turn’ and I haven’t looked back.” She started working out in her home gym, saying she was too embarrassed to work out in front of anyone. She did, eventu- ally, deem herself fit enough to proceed to a local gym. That led her into the sport of fitness modelling, a drug-free sport that de-emphasizes body building and places the focus on fitness. Competing against women who were up to 20 years her junior, Sinclair’s foray into fitness modelling didn’t start well, as she finished second last in her first competition. But, it was enough to keep her in the sport and striving to improve her fitness. Her perseverance paid off as she eventually earned a top-10 finish in one competition. When I met her in 2005 for the feature story, she was the picture of health, and so far from the place where she started from -- hopelessly overweight, a pack-a-day cigarette habit and stress ruling her life. By way of an update, the upbeat and effervescent 49-year-old is still living in Pickering but, most interestingly, her life has truly come full circle. She resigned her position as a fleet man- ager for a large company and has started into a career that fits her new lifestyle. She’s now helping people become more -- and in some cases, less -- than they were through her new company KA Health and Fitness, which opened this past June. “I gave up my full-time job in the cor- porate work, and now I’m doing this,” she said, adding she meets with clients, some she’s had for several years, each day for one-on-one training and lifestyle coaching. “This is my passion. I was meant to do this.” Mostly, though, she can relate and empa- thize with people who come to her from a place in their lives she once occupied. “They know I’ve been there and done that. I’m coming from a place of experi- ence, I’m not looking down on them. I wasn’t always skinny and I wasn’t always athletic.” Al Rivett’s column appears every fourth Friday. E-mail arivett@durhamregion.com. Helping others reshape their bodies, self-esteem now a calling I t’s hard to believe, but even in 2008 there’s still a stigma attached to issues dealing with mental health. Many people who have dealt with mental health issues — or experienced them in their families — no doubt would prefer to keep the issue quiet, to maybe ignore it and hope it goes away. That, of course, is exactly the wrong thing to do. History has shown us ignoring issues just makes them worse and consequently harder to deal with. With that in mind, the Whitby Men- tal Health Centre deserves applause for not only creating a dialogue about mental health, but doing it creatively. The centre, which serves a population of 2.8 million and employs more than 1,100 people, is holding the first Imag- ine Film Festival Oct. 7 and 8. By showing films dealing with men- tal illness — Crash Landing and Away From Her Oct. 7 and Cornelius and Canvas Oct. 8 — the centre is bringing the issue to the forefront in a positive way, demonstrating loudly that it’s OK to have mental illness out in the open where we can discuss it, deal with it and learn what to do. But the centre went a step further than just running a few films. Holly- wood actor Joe Pantoliano, who many people will remember for his role of Ralph Cifaretto in ‘The Sopranos’, will be at the festival. Mr. Pantoliano, who has fought clini- cal depression for years, stars in the festival’s showcase movie, ‘Canvas’, and will speak at the end of the movie about his battle. The actor, who has also starred in ‘The Matrix’ and more than 70 other movies, said for a long time he was too ashamed to admit he had a problem. It reinforces a message presented by Olympic medal-winning diver Greg Louganis who bravely spoke about his problems with depression at the WMHC earlier this year. He felt it was important to offer support to those suf- fering from mental health issues. That’s the exact message the centre wants to get out — hiding the issue of mental problems doesn’t help anyone. But when it’s out in the open, then it can be addressed. Al Rivett Carbon tax idea needs to be simplified To the editor: The carbon tax is a real problem to many voters. The Liberals and Greens promise it will be revenue neutral because the carbon tax will be offset by an equal drop in income tax. It is reasonable to believe the carbon tax as designed will increase the cost of all products and services that either are energy or use it; gasoline, diesel, hence all food, transportation, generation of electric- ity except perhaps nuclear and virtually all manufactured products, etc. If it is revenue neutral, a far simpler, eas- ier and more cost-effective way to imple- ment the programs they want to fund via the carbon tax would be to take the money they expect to raise from carbon tax directly from the income taxes received and use it to fund these same programs. This would accomplish: all the same benefits of reduc- ing carbon footprints via these programs while not increasing the cost of all the items to which the carbon tax will impact negatively plus reduce bureaucratic costs of collection and auditing of the carbon tax. If revenue neutral as presented by the Liberal and Green party, such an approach would be a win-win-win situation. Many parents of today’s teens do not know how to handle their son/daughter’s negative behav- iour. The Association of Par- ent Support Groups in Ontario (APSGO) is there to support par- ents whose teens are involved in negative activities, including stealing, drugs, trouble with the law, running away, violence and gangs. The Ajax Pickering Chapter of APSGO hosts an open house and information night on Thursday, Oct. 9 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, 111 Hunt St., Ajax. Helen Jones, the founder of APSGO and host of the television call-in show ‘Helen Help Us’ is the guest speaker. APSGO parent support groups helps parents of young people who are in trouble with their fami- lies, schools, drugs, alcohol or the law. The groups welcome parents, grandparents, step-parents, or any adult concerned about the behav- iour of a youth who they know. All of the groups meet weekly and members learn from each other’s experiences in dealing with similar problems. All infor- mation revealed at the meetings is kept confidential. The Ontario Federation of Health Care Workers was outside The Wynfield nurs- ing home last Thursday. It was the latest stop on a pro- vincial tour aimed at pres- suring the Ontario govern- ment to invest more in the Province’s long-term care facilities. The biggest problem is staffing, said Nicole Desjar- dins, a union organizer at The Wynfield. Workers are often short-handed when someone calls in sick or in- jured. “It puts everybody behind. The residents aren’t getting changed when they want to be changed, they’re not get- ting fed when they want to be fed,” said Ms. Desjardins, adding not only are meals late, but medication can also be late as well. The nurses say they often have to do “double med passes,” meaning they ad- minister medication to 64 residents as opposed to 32. “When a nurse is working short and giving meds to 64 residents instead of 32, there could be medication errors or something forgotten,” said Ms. Desjardins. The union also raised con- cerns about the diapers used for incontinent residents. The Province allots $1.20 per day per resident for diapers. Each one costs about half that, but they’re designed for more than one use. Within the nursing home industry, workers are told they must stay on until a certain level of fullness is reached. But even if the diaper policy changed, the union questioned wheth- er there’s enough staffing to improve that standard of care. “I find it frustrating and a little degrading when the members of society who built this province to be the great province that it is have to wait to be changed when you don’t do that to new- borns,” Ms. Desjardins said. Even when the home is adequately staffed, there’s not time to spend quality time with the residents, she added. “Even just picking out your clothes every day, wouldn’t it be nice to have an extra 10 minutes with Mrs. Smith to say, ‘You wore that yesterday, wouldn’t you like to wear something else today?’” A personal support work- er at The Wynfield, Danielle Lapierre popped by to visit the protesters before head- ing in to start her shift. Ms. Lapierre said there’s gener- ally three workers for every 30 residents. If one is on break or lunch, that leaves two people to rush the resi- dents through their personal care routines. “It’s kind of like a lose- lose situation. You’re rush- ing them so they feel more agitated,” said Ms. Lapierre. She said she tries to treat the residents as if they were her own parents and thinks they deserve better. Ms. Desjardins said more needs to be done to make sure residents are receiving the care they’re entitled to under their bill of rights. She doesn’t think plans by the government to introduce roughly one more nurse and one more personal support worker per home is enough. She also wants more over- sight from the government, including a better inspection process for the homes. Until that happens, the union will continue picket- ing homes across Ontario ASHLEY MANOR SENIORS FALL BAZAAR *Cash Draw Ticket Winners* 1st Prize: Judie Smith Robart $300 2nd Prize: Mrs. M. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 3, 2008 PAGE 13 A/Pdurhamregion.com Organizers ‘very pleased’ with Parkinson’s fundraiser DURHAM — The weather was wonderful and the turnout even better for the SuperWalk for Par- kinson’s. Held at Rotary Park in Ajax on Sunday, the event attracted a couple of hundred participants from across Durham Region. “It went really well. We were very pleased. The weather was perfect,” said Jean Keary, the chairwoman of the walk. On the day of the walk, $49,200 was collected, but the total has since risen to $50,700, she said. “It’s round about the same, equal to last year, which was one of our best,” she said. The money goes to the Parkin- son Society of Canada, through the Central and Norther Ontario Region chapter. Funds are used to support research, provide ser- vices and education programs. “Every penny raised goes where it should go,” Ms. Keary said. “One hundred per cent raised goes to the society for what it’s intended.” There were 122 register walk- ers, an increase from the 108 last year, she said. “There were 200 to 250 at the walk in total. Walkers bring friends and family. We try to en- courage it as a family thing,” Ms. Keary said. The walk distance was from “one metre to five kilometres.” The shorter distance is to “en- courage people with the disabil- ity to participate. Those with it don’t have to go very far, just a few steps. Those in the advanced stages, that’s all they can do,” she said. The walk was held at Rotary Park in Ajax and was for all of Durham Region, she said. “Our members come from all of the Durham Region,” said Ms. Keary. The Durham chapter of the Parkinson society has about 200 members. www.sklargallery.com Exceptional Warranty Superior Construction Fast Delivery Durham’s Newest & Largest Sklar Peppler Furnishings Store!ONELOCATI O N ONLY OSHAW A 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 905-723-4561 Hours: Mon.• Tues.• Wed. 10-6, Thurs.• Fri. 10-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun.11-5 *Credit equal to the value of the GST. Registration for the 2008/2009 Go Active Fitness Challenge is now open. Teach- ers must register their classes before Oct. 24 at www.fitnesschallenge.ca. The challenge is an annual program that gives Canadian elementary schools (excluding the Territories and the provinces of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador) the chance to earn $200 in physical education credits per class and up to a maximum of $500 per school. Inspired by the Canadian Fitness Awards, the challenge is designed to promote physical activity among students. After registering, each eligible class receives a Go Active Fitness Challenge kit. The kit provides all the necessary materials to com- plete the challenge. Classes taking the challenge are tested on a series of six exercises: crunches, push-ups, 50-metre dash, shuttle run, standing long jump and an endurance run. Teachers test their students on the same six exercises once in the fall and once in the spring. Schools must submit their results on the Fitness Challenge website. For more information, or if you would like to register your class, visit www.fit- nesschallenge.ca. To better serve the area, Rahim has doubled the size of his store and his staff. It’s not only bigger, it offers several new services, including an expanded grocery department, a full-service post offi ce, digital on-site photo lab and a bigger, better cosmetics department. The Beauty Boutique is the place where you’ll fi nd all of the high-end brand names you’ve had to drive downtown for in the past: Lancome, Guerlain, Biotherm, Clarins, Shisei- do, Smashbox, Pur Minerals, Lise Watier, Ben- efi t, Gosh and Boots No. 7. The Beauty Boutique is also the place to at- tend “Cosmetic Galas.” Here you’ll fi nd the lat- est trends in cosmetics and support the Rouge Valley Health System at the same time. Rahim’s goal in expanding was to offer customers more one-stop shopping, a plus for many people on the go today. At the newly renovated store, you can take care of all of your postal needs - whether it’s sending a letter or receiving a parcel - and pick up a few groceries on your way home. There is also a new digital photo lab on- site with the latest cameras by Olympus, Sony, Fuji, Kodak and Canon. You’ll also fi nd the lat- est games and accessories by Nintendo Wii, DS systems, and more. Store hours have been expanded to 8 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. “We’re trying to make it easier for people. They get all of the convenience closer to home,” says Rahim, who has lived in the Ajax- Pickering area for the past 10 years. As a pharmacist, his priority is making sure his patients’ health care needs are also well taken care of. The pharmacy offers diabetes clinics at the Petticoat Creek Library in con- junction with the local Lions Club, as well as four in-store seminars. This fall, they include Blood Pressure (Oct. 23), Diabetes (Oct. 30), Managing Anxiety (Nov. 6) and Osteoporosis Prevention (Nov. 13). Rahim will also be offering a fl u shot clinic on Nov. 20. Customers must register and are strongly advised to for the in-store seminars as well. Rahim is pleased that his store has become a part of the community over the past seven years, and he hopes the expansion will help to better serve it. Shoppers Drug Mart is now sell- ing leaves and apples for its “Tree of Life,” with all proceeds going to the Rouge Valley Health System. As well, Rahim has extended a 15 per cent discount to all uniformed police offi cers after 6 p.m. to thank them for their dedicated service to the community. Part of Healthy Workplace Month, the Region is present- ing ‘Work, Stress and Wellness: Leading the Way’ on Oct. 21. The free event runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility in Ajax. It is aimed at managers, employ- ers, human resource profes- sionals and others who could bring best practices to their workplace. According to one survey, 83 per cent of Canadians showed up for work while sick or ex- hausted an average of six times in the past year. And the Conference Board of Canada says stressed out workers are twice as likely to call in sick as those who report little stress. “Improved employee health requires change at the individ- ual and organizational level,” said Jennifer Presley, a Dur- ham public health nurse. Lukianchuk’s parents, John and Louise, were two of the founders of the Ajax Lyric Theatre, and in her words she practically had no choice but to become an actress. “I was dragged to my parents’ rehearsals in my playpen,” she said, laughing. It might have been a drag at the time, but she also credits her parents with inspiring her to follow her dream of acting and sing- ing. “If they hadn’t gotten into the Ajax Lyric Theatre through their friends, they wouldn’t have met and I never would have even been born,” Lukianchuk said. With encouraging parents and a bundle of enthusiasm, Lukianchuk was soon taking part in community theatre in the GTA, includ- ing shows in Oshawa, Port Perry, Pickering, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton - any- where her parents were willing to drive her. The hard work has certainly paid off. From her first role as Gretl in the Bramp- ton Music Theatre’s production of ‘The Sound of Music’ in 1984, to attending Ryer- son University’s Theatre Acting Program and switching gears to achieving a degree in En- vironmental Studies from Trent University, Lukianchuk has enjoyed a steady stream of challenging roles and welcomes everything that comes her way. After years of performing in community theatre while growing up in Ajax, Marsala is grateful to have been able to work with and learn from so many different people. “All of these experiences helped me choose acting as a career and also gave me knowledge and practical experience beyond acting school training,” she said. “They also taught me that acting really can pay bills, give you a home, and a so-called normal life.” Lukianchuk, 28, has taken a break from travelling from show to show and found a welcoming home in Millbrook’s 4th Line Theatre, which stages summer plays focused on Canadian history and culture with a reg- ular cast of actors, playwrights and directors. The shift from getting to know new actors in each play and working with the team at 4th Line was an interesting adjustment for Luki- anchuk. “There’s a big difference between travel- ling around to shows and rehearsals versus feeling like part of a core group like we have at 4th Line,” she said. “I have friends from previous productions as well, but it’s easier to lose touch because of all the travel and moving around involved. I’ve had a great experience with everyone at 4th Line! They are some of the most talented people I’ve ever met and, yet, they were also incredibly hard-working and down-to-earth. It’s been a pleasure and I’ve made lasting friendships.” Lukianchuk is looking forward to some time off over the winter after a busy summer including two very different parts for the plays, ‘The Last Green Hill’ and ‘School- house’, staged by the 4th Line Theatre. In the former, Lukianchuk took on the role of Lyla Sue, a vampy, cabaret-style companion to the town’s wealthiest man. She filled the shoes of a vastly different woman, the gos- sipy church-goer, Mrs. Baptie, in ‘School- house’. “I love playing parts that are so different from me!” she said. “Of course, everything comes from within, but being able to play and have fun with a character is both chal- lenging and fun! Also, I love singing, so any chance I have to combine it with acting is amazing.” Asked what her future goals are, Luki- anchuk’s love of music and down-to-earth personality take centre stage, as she admits, “I would love to do the big Toronto music scene... but I’d be equally happy playing original tunes with my husband at the local pub! Perhaps both!” For more information about the 4th Line Theatre, visit www.4thlinetheatre.on.ca. Lightning round with Marsala Lukianchuk: 1. Batman: Adam West or Christian Bale? Michael Keaton! 2. Entertainment in brief OCTOBER 3, 2008 By John Foote jfoote@IAOD.com Paul Newman’s death on Sept. 26 has not been far from my mind these last few days. Long an admirer of New- man, I was honoured with the chance to meet and in- terview him in 1998 during a trip to Los Angeles. Led down the hall by his assis- tant, I entered the suite in the Four Seasons Beverly Hills, and there he was, at the age of 75 still shockingly handsome, slim, with those piercing cobalt blue eyes. He rose, walked to me, shook my hand, and said “I’m Paul,” with a smile, (as if I would not have known) and ush- ered me into the room. Normally for interviews such as this, print press are given 15 to 20 minutes to talk film with the “talent”. Like clockwork, at the 20-minute mark, his assistant walked back in to let me know my time was up, and Newman gently let her know we were not done, and might not be for quite some time. Looking at his watch, he asked me if I had anything planned, and I stated no. He then asked her to come back in an hour, as he was having a good time. Engaged in deep conver- sation about method acting, ‘The Hustler’ (1961), ‘Hud’ (1963) and ‘Cool Hand Luke’ (1967), Newman and I spoke for more than 90 minutes, throwing his schedule off, and making me the envy of the film critics that day. When we were done, he walked me to the door, his hand on my shoulder, we shook hands and he thanked me for what he called, “an enjoyable conversation”. I left the room lighter than air and have never forgotten a sec- ond of it. For more than half a cen- tury, Newman has been one of the most prolific actors in modern cinema, easily walk- ing that very thin line be- tween actor and movie star. Unlike many of his contem- poraries, Marlon Brando among them, Newman un- derstood the Hollywood game, and knew that if he wanted work such as ‘The Hustler’, he would need to do films like ‘Exodus’ (1960) and, later in his career, ‘The Towering Inferno’ (1974), box office hits that made clear his drawing power with the pub- lic. While the big films made untold millions, the studios were happy with the smaller returns of the smaller films, so long as they made money. While Brando made en- emies and lost his love of the art, Newman was beloved and grew as an actor before our eyes. His debut film, ‘The Silver Chalice’ (1954), sent him running back to New York’s Actors Studio, to re- store his belief in himself. He returned to Hollywood after the death of James Dean to take the lead role in ‘Some- body Up There Like Me’ (1956), the film that made him a star. Two years later he received his first Academy Award nomination as Brick in ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ (1958). Where Newman cut loose and became a major actor was in the 1960s, where he gave an array of perfor- mances that should have seen him end the decade with three Academy Awards for best actor. In addition he proved equally at home in studio pictures geared to make money, including the box office smash ‘Butch Cas- sidy and the Sundance Kid’ (1969), which teamed him with Robert Redford for the first time. Strong work con- tinued through the 1970s and 1980s in ‘Slap Shot’ (1977), the Oscar-winning hit ‘The Sting’ (1973) and ‘Absence of Malice’ (1981), which earned him another Oscar nod for best actor. As a drunken law- yer in ‘The Verdict’ (1982), the performance that every- one in the business believed would finally get him that long overdue Oscar. Sadly again, he was snubbed, only to win four years later for Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Color of Money’ (1986). Leaving the Four Seasons that day back in 1998, I was asked by an American critic what he was like, and without thinking I answered, “He’s a nice guy, everything you expect him to be.” There will never be another like him. Cougars to play in Columbus against Bishop Ready Silver Knights next week By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com AJAX — The Notre Dame Catho- lic Secondary School senior boys’ football team is heading back to Ohio, hoping for more success than it enjoyed in a previous visit, said the team’s head coach. The Cougars will be in Columbus, Ohio where they will meet Bishop Ready Silver Knights at the private Catholic school on Oct. 10. Bishop Ready lost in the state semifinals last season at the Division V level, finishing with an impressive mark of 12-2. This year, however, the Ohio school team is in transition, having lost many of its players to graduation. This means the Cougars may be more able to compete effectively against the Silver Knights, which handed Notre Dame a 52-6 in their inaugural meeting last season. “They’re in a rebuilding year this year,” said Notre Dame head coach Brian Hughes. Playing American teams repre- sents a big adjustment for the Notre Dame players, who have to adapt quickly to a smaller field, to having only 11 players on the field at one time and to four-down football. While the Oct. 10 matchup in the Ohio State capital is an exhibition game for the Cougars, it means a whole lot more to Bishop Ready, as it comprises one of its scheduled games for the season. Playing in the U.S., said Hughes, not only gives Notre Dame a taste of football at its finest, but it offers a diversion from its regular-season slate of games. “We’re glad to be playing football down there gain. They have high- calibre teams and players and it’s a different game, it gives variety to players,” he said. Playing American competition is nothing new to Notre Dame, which managed to play several schools while in New Orleans in August. Players were helping rebuild houses that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005. The players worked all day and practised in the evening. En route to Louisiana, the Notre Dame team stopped in Findlay, Ohio to play the Liberty-Benton school Eagles late last month. The Cougars fell 59-13 to a top-notch Liberty- Benton squad, which was playing its first game of the season. They’re a program which Hughes feels could be near the top of Ohio state football this season. “They’re a really strong team. They could very well be in the state final this year,” said Hughes. While in Louisiana, the Notre Dame players practiced at New- man High School in New Orleans. That school boasts two significant graduates from its football program, namely Peyton Manning of the In- dianapolis Colts and Eli Manning of the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. While there, the Cougars took part in two scrimmages against New Orleans high schools, playing Arch- bishop Hannan and Livonia High School. Notre Dame played a quar- ter against Archbishop Hannan, los- ing 7-2, and also dropped a 15-0 decision to Livonia in a quarter of play. Mostly, though, the 60-member Notre Dame entourage continued its work of rebuilding homes in the city that just missed being in the eye of Hurricane Gustav that instead devastated parts of Texas. So far, the Notre Dame Cougars are off to a strong start in LOSSA gridiron play. In Week 1, the Cougars knocked off Monsignor Paul Dwyer of Oshawa 25-0, their first-ever win over Dwyer. This past week, how- ever, the Cougars dropped a 21-7 decision to Holy Trinity of Courtice in a contest at Archbishop Denis O’Connor field on Friday. Hughes said the Cougars are poised for a solid season, as they boast its strongest contingent of players in the program’s history. “We’re a veteran football team as almost every skill position has a vet- eran at it,” explained Hughes. “We have the benefit of some graduating junior players this year as we had a junior team at the school for the first time last year. They’re coming up to senior and they’re pretty good football players.” But, Hughes cautions what hap- pens between the lines will dictate the quality of the Cougars’ season. “On paper is one thing, but how they play on the field is another,” he said. The Isoft squad, which recently celebrated 20 continuous years in the league this season in various divisions, won the ‘E’ Division playoff final. The victory completes a stel- lar season on the field for Isoft, having swept both league tour- naments as well as finishing first in the regular season in the ‘E’ Division, one of six division in the PMSPL. The Isoft squad arguably has the most diverse age range of any team in the league, with play- ers ranging in age from 19 to 66. Despite the age differences, the team has enjoyed the play and the camaraderie. Submitted photo The Isoft team captured the championship of the ‘E’ division within the Pickering Men’s Slow Pitch League recently. The team has played 20 continuous years within the PMSPL. In the back row, from left, are Trevor Smith, Ian Arnold, Pete Austin, Brad Austin, Cam Young, Brian Austin and Bruce Phillips. In front row are Rob Maggs, Tom Ford, Pete Best, Jake Kempenar, Brian Austin, Matt Barnett, Craig Phillips and Mike Fisher.
