Bay Ridges veterinarian buys property for future relocation By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — The last tenant re- maining at what’s left of the old Bay Ridges plaza has finally budged. Dr. Janet Sawyer, owner of Millenni- um City Veterinary Hospital, has been in a battle with San Francisco By the Bay developers, SR&R Bay Ridges Ltd., since the City granted the company’s request to construct a high-density, mixed-use commercial/residential area. Despite Dr. Sawyer winning the right to run her veterinary clinic at the plaza until her lease expires in 2010 (with a renewal option until 2015), demolition of the rest of the plaza and construc- tion has gone forward. And after con- ducting her business in a “demolition zone” and an unsuccessful attempt to halt the development of a tempo- rary building to relocate her business on the property, Dr. Sawyer recently purchased a house as a potential new ✦ See Vet, Page 3 Animal hospital has potential new home durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 2 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 15, 2008 location. “It’s something to look forward to,” she said in an interview. Although it’s not south of Hwy. 401, as Dr. Saw- yer wished since she plans to continue serving south Pickering, the new loca- tion is on Liverpool Road, between Kingston and Glenanna roads. But she’s not sure when she’ll make the move. “That remains to be seen,” she said. “We still have a lease here and it really doesn’t make sense to leave now without some resolu- tion from SR&R.” Dr. Sawyer is seeking compensation for costs she’s incurred to keep her business in the Bay Ridges neighbourhood. She’s spent more than $140,000 to remain at the plaza and it doesn’t make business sense to leave without a settlement since her business continues to succeed, she said. Despite original concerns that construction surround- ing her clinic, decreased parking and little signage would impede business, it hasn’t. If Dr. Sawyer doesn’t receive the compensation she wants, she won’t be leaving in a hurry. “I’d say the number of new clients is as good as it’s al- ways been,” Dr. Sawyer said, adding it demonstrates the loyal support she’s received from the community. SR&R partner Steve Warsh did not return calls for comment. Much work still has to be done before Dr. Sawyer can move her practice, whether SR&R honours her request or not. Her application will go to the City’s planning and development committee Monday for a zoning bylaw amendment since current zoning only allows for a res- idential detached dwelling at the new place. But it does coincide with the Pickering Official Plan. P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 15, 2008 durhamregion.com I f I were old enough to be a cat lady, I would be one. And I’d adopt all the cats from Pickering Animal Services - and not just the kittens. This would make more room for the next batch that’s abandoned in a box outside of a pet store or thrown out of a car onto Hwy. 401. But unfortunately, I can’t handle 30 all by myself, and I think people who like cats but don’t own one should really do some rethinking. Cats are easy to care for, requiring less attention than dogs. They can go a whole weekend alone, and if you go on vacation, all you need is someone to come in and feed them every couple of days. They don’t need the constant walking that dogs do since cats are litter- trained. And what’s more upsetting than all these orphaned cats, is many people who actually do adopt them are still clueless about giving them proper care. This is why Pickering Animal Services’ freezer is filled with cats found killed at the side of the road and cats that were suffering illness. Brutal, yes, but people need to wake up to a reality check once in a while and realize what their igno- rance can cause. First of all, not spaying or neutering cats is ridiculous. There is no need for house cats to procreate. Enough already do, and neutering and spaying is also good for their health, and fights off dis- eases like cancer. A pet licence is necessary if owners ever want to reunite with lost pets. And finally, the trend of letting cats outside is old. They can get hit by cars or terrorized by heartless people - some of these stories, unfortunately, have reached this paper. And why do people only choose cats based on looks? Sure, kittens are cute, but they’ll be scooped up in no time. And sorry to break it, but they grow up too. Take Lucky Bear, for example, who’s been at the shelter for months after being hit by a car and a truck. He’s only about one or two, but is overlooked since he’s full-grown. He’s also a black cat and for some reason, they’re often overlooked too. But please don’t adopt if you’re not sure you can commit to 20 years. Cats get attached to people and it’s cruel to abandon them or give them away after it’s become comfortable in a home. As I said, they’re not much work but they have feelings too. Harrison Ford the cat, for example, clung onto the exhaust under a mov- ing car all the way from Bowmanville to Pickering a few weeks ago. He had a will to live; he could have easily let go but instead held on for his dear life for about 40 kilometres, all the while burning his paws and singeing off his whiskers on the exhaust. People need to take responsibility for their pets. And those ready to offer a loving and stable home should do so by calling animal services at 905-683-7575. And let’s not forget Joyce Smith at Sec- ond Chance Wildlife Animal Sanctuary, where 300 cats also await homes. She can be reached at 905-649-8282. Kristen Calis’s column appears every third Friday. E-mail kcalis@durhamregion.com. Take a cat home if you can be a responsible owner There shouldn’t be any question when Durham Region Transit’s executive committee meets Sept. 3 that a decision will be made to keep a cur- rent bus route in south Ajax intact. Removing the bus route on Hoile Drive, south of Audley Road and Ashbury Bou- levard near Lake Ontario, would send the wrong message to all communities and riders served by DRT. After all, the route is deemed to be performing well in terms of ridership, and there would be no reason to cancel it but for the fact a petition has been circulating, signed by residents who presumably do not need to use public transit, and therefore don’t feel they need a smelly, noisy bus lumbering along the residential street. It is a complaint that could almost be considered frivolous, except it’s being made by taxpayers and the DRT is to be commended for considering it. But, in this case, the benefit to the community as a whole must outweigh the complaints of a few. The Hoile Drive bus, which runs only during morning and afternoon rush hours, is a problem for homeowner San- dra Cassidy, who believes noise, pollution and a lack of ridership warrants its cancel- lation. Ms. Cassidy and her husband have measured the noise level in their bedroom when the bus passes by, and she points out most people in the subdivision have cars. But, people are using the bus, their taxes are being collected to operate a public transit system, and there is no reason to make those passengers walk further in the coming winter months to board a bus. Indeed, taking a bus off a residential street because the noise displeases certain neighbours could set a dangerous prec- edent to other communities in Durham Region as well. If one street can vote the bus off just because it’s not wanted by everyone, then what’s to prevent other streets in other neighbourhoods from doing the same? Bus passengers on Hoile Drive do not deserve to be left outside the DRT’s 400- metre bus stop standard. The noise and exhaust of vehicles is a fact of life in urban Durham Region. Transit is an essential service; no one would complain about the noise and exhaust of an ambulance, fire truck or police car if they needed one. Which brings up another point: No one, car owner or not, can be certain the day won’t come when they will need to board a public bus, unforeseen circumstances being what they are. Durham Region is fortunate to have public transit and it must continue to run for all taxpayers. Kristen Calis Staff leave over threat of losing mental health beds To the editor: As the summer continues, we await the fate of the 20 mental health beds at the Rouge Valley Ajax-Pickering site currently being decided in the Ontario courts. Durham Region Acute Care Mental Health beds are being impacted as doc- tors and specialized mental health care staff leave the hospital frustrated with the loss of this important service to Durham Region. Durham Region should not be losing needed mental health services to Toron- to. It’s a Mobile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. “The day is gone when you carried some brochures and a sample window to a customer’s home,” explains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window samples.” When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom which you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl windows which you’re free to operate and you’ll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. “After being in this business for 26 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All Vinyl Window Designs windows come with Low E Glass which filters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the summer and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Wayne would also like his customers to know that he does all of the estimates personally, eliminating the cost of a salesperson. DURHAM — It’s getting easier to drive across Durham Region along Taunton Road, but there’s still work to be done before it’s smooth sailing the whole way. A major stretch of construction along the road, between Westney Road in Ajax and Brock Street in Whitby, is close to being complet- ed, said Dan Waechter, manager of Durham Region’s construc- tion division. All four lanes are now open and only restoration work and minor deficiency work remains. Widening between Grandview Street and Benson Road in Oshawa was completed last fall. But there’s more on the horizon. While advance work for the widening of Taunton between Church Street and Ravenscroft Road in Ajax was completed this summer, the majority of the work to widen and improve the road is to be completed in 2009. The project will be tendered this sum- mer. The work has to be done in stages in order to accommodate traffic, he added. Started in late summer 2006, the $22.25 million project running from Ajax to Whitby is on budget, said Mr. Waechter, but behind schedule. It was originally sched- uled to be completed by the end of 2007. Factors like a wet fall in 2006 and early winter weather in fall 2007 slowed things down. The second annual Cheryl Mc- Cune 24-hour Ball Hockey Tour- nament starts at 11 a.m. Sept. 20 in the Durham College/Uni- versity of Ontario Institute of Technology parking lot at 2000 Simcoe St., Founders Two Lot. The tournament helps hon- our Ms. McCune, a dedicated mother and businesswoman with a commitment to charitable causes. She died in 1998 after a 10-year struggle with lupus. The chronic autoimmune disease af- fects thousands of Canadians. Lupus causes inflammation of various parts of the body, espe- cially the skin, joints, blood and kidneys. Generally, a person’s immune system would protect against viruses and bacteria, but for those fighting lupus, the ability to tell the difference be- tween foreign substances and the body’s own cells and tissues is damaged. Money raised through the ball hockey tournament goes to the Lupus Foundation. Visit cm24ballhockey.com for full event details and to down- load a pledge form and register. The library checked out 106,776 items, including books, DVDs and video games. In the past year, the library has expanded its collection by adding more DVDs, the latest bestselling novels and a new collection of video games for Playstation 3 and Wii. The Petticoat Creek branch also broke its July record when more than 34,056 items were circulated – up from the previous re- cord of 31,389 last year. “When we see that the community is borrowing our materi- als in record numbers, it is a reaffirmation that we’re meeting our public’s needs,” said Cathy Grant, director of public services. The actor, who spent her high school years in Whitby, is star- ring as Juliet in Driftwood The- atre Group’s production of Shake- speare’s Romeo and Juliet. But that’s just the latest of her appear- ances on stage in her first year after finishing school. “This is my first year out of school,” she said in a telephone interview. “I’ve had a lot of op- portunities. Everything’s just sort of clicked.” Last year, she was in the George F. Walker play, TOUGH!, with the Factory Theatre in Toronto. She learned this spring the cast was nominated for a Dora award for ensemble work and the play it- self for outstanding production for young audiences. “We’re all pretty excited about that,” she said. Then it was on to How It Works by Daniel McIvor, her favourite Canadian playwright, in a produc- tion at the Tarragon Theatre. Jil- lard then appeared in A Man of No Importance at Acting Up Stage. Up next was My Name is Rachel Corrie, which ran during June at Theatre Panik in Toronto. The play is based on the diaries of a young American woman killed by an Is- raeli military bulldozer while she protested demolishing of a Pales- tinian home in Gaza. It’s raised controversy when it was staged elsewhere. “We tried to tell the story as it is in the script. It’s all her own writ- ing. It’s been received incredibly positively by audiences.” While most audiences were positive, even those people who weren’t were willing “to talk and discuss it. It’s a nice thing to have theatre ignite, be a catalyst for dis- cussion,” Jillard said. Now it’s on to Driftwood, where she had her professional debut a couple of years ago. Jillard’s interest in performing came naturally to her. “I performed from a really early age. My mom was a singer and a drama teacher. Dancing and act- ing were extracurricular activities for her,” she said. She took a drama course in high school but when she graduated, she planned to become a veteri- narian, attending the University of Guelph. Partway through her first year, she started to question her decision. The passion wasn’t there, she said. She checked into drama programs and enrolled at the University of Toronto’s drama program in University College. “I broke it to my parents who were not surprised at all and were quite delighted and supportive.” She admits the profession is a hard one, filled with uncertainty. But no matter if she’s successful or not, “I have to be doing this. Period.” “Driftwood is such a differ- ent experience,” she said of the drama troupe which performs Shakespeare in parks throughout Durham and the rest of southern Ontario each summer. “I’m so grateful that this was my first professional experience. There’s something about the magic of theatre that seems more alive when you have to tear down your set every night and you’re together all the time. Some of my closest friends now are from Driftwood.” She rooms with Driftwood’s stage manager and she met her boy- friend in Driftwood. She’s looking forward to per- forming as Juliet again, adding she can do Juliet “100 times” and still find something new in it. “One of the things I love about Romeo and Juliet is ... that it’s a real journey for Juliet. You start with this young girl who’s been very privileged. She’s been quite sheltered.” Then she meets Romeo, the enemy, and falls in love. “It shatters her world in a way.” Juliet faces the “brutality” of questioning your assumptions, the way you’ve lived your life. She also faces the dan- ger in what seems like an innocent, teenage love. “There’s a current of something quite dangerous under the teen- age love,” Jillard said. “I love the transformation of Juliet. From be- ginning to end, you see a girl be- come a woman, a girl who has to think for herself, who knows what she wants and knows the cost of getting it.” Even if it means dying for it. The beauty and aggression, the sensual hunger and violent con- flict, as Driftwood’s artistic direc- tor Jeremy Smith puts it, of Romeo and Juliet will be played out for the final time this summer Sunday in Pickering, at the Greenwood Com- munity Centre, Greenwood. “Every moment of love and ten- derness is punctuated by the lan- guage of violence,” Smith said. The exploration of conflict is central to Driftwood’s production of the play, not only as it relates to Shakespeare’s life but as it relates to cultures that have filled the gap of time between the play’s creation and today, Smith said. The cast also features Benjamin Mehl as Romeo, Karl Ang as Ty- balt/Friar John, Steven Burley as Capulet, Mark Crawford as Friar Laurence, Christopher Darroch as Mercutio/Paris, Tabitha Keast as Lady Capulet, Sarah Machin-Gale as Montague/Nurse, Kyle McDon- ald as The Prince/Peter, and Sa- bryn Rock as Benvolio. Admission is on a pay-what- you-can basis with a suggested cost of $15 per person. The per- formance begins at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.drift- woodtheatre.com, or call the sum- mer hotline, 905-576-2396. A successful first year for Driftwood actor Bethany Jillard plays Juliet in Driftwood Theatre’s production of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, which wraps up its summer tour this Sunday in Greenwood. Celtic music coming to Durham DURHAM — A hometown band, The Champion Heartache, is re- leasing its new CD Aug. 25 at The Hare and The Hound. The alt-rock/country collective is made up of Matt Holtby, Brendan Lawless, Sean MacLean, Derek Gibberson, Trish Robb and Craig Tou- tant. Their self-titled CD was nearly two years in the making, with sup- port from musicians and friends close to them. It was recorded with help from Blind Billy Blasko, core member of another Oshawa band, The Stables. Artist Geordie Lishman, a friend of band members and son of famous artist Bill Lishman, sculpted the iron rose that graces the CD’s cover. Meanwhile, band members are working on their own solo works, including MacLean and Robb. The band is planning another album for the fall. The current CD has been getting play on 102.1 The Edge and Oshawa’s 94.9, The Rock, while the band has played the Horseshoe and NXNE. The Hare and The Hound is located at 15 Simcoe St. N. in down- town Oshawa. Art workshops offered at Parkwood By Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com BEIJING -- Standing in the middle of the athlete’s village, with the flags of all the competing countries fluttering in the wind serving as the backdrop, Anson Henry and Tabia Charles are the epitome of the three ‘C’s’: calm, cool and collected. Boy, is that going to change over the next few days. The Pickering duo is now in Beijing after landing here from a training session in Singapore, ready and eager to get Olympic events started. Henry will make his debut at the National Stadium on Friday when he steps into the starting blocks for the 100m, while Charles gets a few extra days to prepare before the long jump on Tuesday. With this being the second time around for Henry, having run as part of the Canadian men’s 4x100 relay team four years ago in Athens, he is ready to make a statement. “Last time I came, I said that the next time I come I want to be remembered,” notes the 29-year-old. “I want people to remember I came here. That’s the mind- set I have right now.” It’s the first time at the Olympics for Charles, and the impact of what is going on around her hasn’t gone unnoticed. “Overwhelming,” says the 23-year- old of her first impressions of Bei- jing and the atmosphere. “It’s nice though. I get to see all the people who I have competed with. I see old friends from everywhere, so it’s real- ly nice.” While she has been able to stay calm and relaxed leading up to her arrival, a lot of that changed when the bus pulled into the National Sta- dium for her first training session. The beauty of the venue and its size was an eye opener. “Today was the first day I officially got nervous,” she admits. “The bus drove into the stadium and we got to go right by the track and it was like ‘Oh my goodness. This is it.’” Because Henry already has one Olympics under his belt, he is able to take all of the distractions and put them aside. In fact, if anything, the magnitude of the Olympics is something he uses as motivation to pull out a little extra from within. “No matter what, you are going to get nervous because this is a high pressure situation,” he says. “I will probably handle it a lot better than when you first get into a competition like this. “When you are new to it, it may weaken you a little bit. The more you do it, you use it and turn it into adrenaline. I am looking forward to getting that feeling.” In what is considered one of the glamour events of these Games, Henry figures that running a 10-flat time should be enough to advance through to Saturday’s 100m final. It’s a pretty amazing facility. Absolutely no problems getting through customs/ immigration...there are people everywhere to help out. As I said before, I’ll be working for McDon- ald’s in one of the four restaurants that are operating here in Beijing, including the larg- est in the world - 28 cash registers and two kitchens! But I’m also being a tourist and will pass on some of the sights and experiences. The airport is about a 45-50 minute drive from the hotel, so on our way we were taken on a bit of a tour - got to pass by the Water Cube and the Bird’s Nest (which are pretty much right beside each other). One of the things I really noticed was how clean the city is - there’s no garbage dumped on the side of the roads. It’s also really green - I mean GREEN. There are trees and shrubs and green spaces everywhere - you’d never know that you were in one of the world’s largest cit- ies. The Canadian group got here a day early, so tomorrow we have a free day to do some sightseeing. I think we’re going to try to get to Tiananman Square and the Forbidden City. Should be pretty fun. More to come in the next few days. Stay tuned! Anthony Barsanti is an assistant manager at a McDonald’s restaurant in Whitby and was chosen by the company to work at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Just 15 years old, the Newmarket teenager was in the pool at the National Aquatics Centre in Beijing tonight trying to match the fastest swim- mers in the world in the 200m backstroke of the Olympic Games. Most girls her age probably caught the race on a television in the mall while shopping. Seemann garnered her share of the headlines after qualifying for the Canadian team follow- ing the Olympic Swim Trials in Montreal earlier this year, but on this night, on the world’s larg- est stage, that media throng following her experi- ence was reduced to two. But it mattered not to her. “I was trying to stay relaxed and not freak out with the whole Olympic thing,” she said after fin- ishing eighth in her heat, clocked in a time of 2:15.07. “But I think I went out a little too slow, being too relaxed so that kind of hurt me, but the back end was pretty good. “I usually don’t get nervous before a race, so when I felt myself getting nervous I was like ‘No, no, no, don’t get nervous.’” She strolled on to the deck in front of a crowd of 11,000 people, listening to Drop Dead Gor- geous on her IPod. And, for those in the older set who don’t know, that’s the name of the band, not the song, as was pointed out when asked. But those kind of things happen all the time for the youngster, who takes it all in stride with a gig- gle and laugh that is the trademark of maturing kids. “I don’t find it that difficult,” says the Newmar- ket Stingrays member of always being the ‘kid’ on every team. “My team is all older than me and back home whenever I go on team travel trips everyone is older than me, so I’m used to being the youngest.” Her Olympics over, at least this one, with pre- sumably many more ahead, she plans to watch some of the other events over the course of the next week and a half, as well as take some time to tour Beijing. It’s a little early, as her 100m hurdles event doesn’t start until Sunday, but the declaration is more a reflection of the mindset she has, in this her second Olympic Games. “I am all ready to go mentally and physically,” says Lopes-Schliep, who always seems to be in an upbeat and chipper mood. “The first time I was at the Olympics it was just more of an experience. Now I want to go out and do what I have been training all my life to do.” The 25-year-old just arrived in Beijing with the rest of her Canadian track and field teammates after completing final preparations at a training camp in Singapore. After winning the title as national cham- pion at the Canadian Track and Field Champion- ships in Windsor back in June, she has stayed sharp by competing in Europe, trying to whittle away pre- cious seconds. “After today I am going to get focused, not stay on the phone, things like that,” she says of the plans leading up to her event. “I feel good mentally, I’m in tune with my mental psyche and my training has been going well. I have done all I can do.” Four years ago in Athens she ran a time of 13.08, finishing fifth in her heat. Four years later she rou- tinely runs under the 13-second mark. Now that she is here and settled in, the distrac- tions that can pull athletes away from their purpose will slowly be eliminated. By the time the gun goes off for the start of her event, it will just be her, the hurdles and the finish line. “No matter what you do, there are going to be dis- tractions, but what you do and how you react to them determines your success,” she says. With the entire country craving for a medal, when the track and field athletes take centre stage, Lopes- Schliep knows she will have a lot of support, espe- cially from friends and family back home. She’s not alone here either, as her husband Bronsen and coach Anthony McCleary will be in the stands at the National Stadium to cheer her on as her quest for an Olympic medal unfolds. Playing the Saskatoon Outlaws in the gold-medal game at the 2008 Softball Canada National Ju- nior Women’s Fast Pitch Cham- pionship in Summerside, PEI, Pickering was blanked 3-0 by the Outlaws to bring home silver -- their second in as many years -- as Ontario’s representatives. The Heat entered last Sunday’s final with a perfect 10-0 record, while the Outlaws sported a mark of 7-4. Pickering had earlier defeated Saskatoon 2-1 in the playoffs to earn a berth in the final. Saskatoon then proceeded to the semifinal where they won to set up the win- ner-takes-all final with the Heat. Following the final, four Pickering players -- pitcher Mal- lory Aldred, first baseman Hilary Peacock, third baseman Meghan Chanoweth and outfielder Lisa Kingsmore -- were named to the tournament’s all-star team. Kingsmore, who sported a .667 batting average for the tourna- ment, earned the Softball Canada Award for top batter. After posting an 8-0 record through the preliminary round, the Heat barely escaped their first playoff game against B.C.’s repre- sentatives from Victoria. Trailing 3-2 with two out in the bottom of the seventh and final inning, Pickering received a clutch dou- ble from Vanessa Homiak for the thrilling, come-from-behind 4-3 win. Megan Osbourne, Joey Lye, Kingsmore and Stephanie Leclair all worked to keep the rally alive in the inning. Other Pickering players were Megan Evans, Shannon Galea, Kristina Jerry, Leah McIntosh, Su- zanne Miller, Amy Oliver and Jo- Lynn Smith. Absent for the tourna- ment were Izzy Trottier and Laura Burgess. The coaching staff is head coach Hubie Basilio, assistant coaches Ron Peacock Pat Roach and man- ager Ann Evans. Football squad aims for first OVFL senior title on Saturday By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — The underdog Dolphins have one more ‘Goliath’ to go before they can be crowned champions of the Ontario Varsity Football League’s senior league. The Dolphins, in only their sec- ond season in the OVFL senior loop, will take on the reigning champion Mississauga Warriors -- looking to become the first team to win back- to-back league titles -- in the cham- pionship game at Hamilton’s Ivor Wynne Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Dolphins earned the right to play in the championship game after knocking off the heavily favoured Etobicoke Eagles 17-14 in Pickering last Friday night. Dolphins’ coach Jim Moore notes, first and foremost, the Dolphins will need to pay close attention to War- riors’ running back Jahmeek Mur- ray, who’s currently ranked No. 2 in the league rushing with 900 yards on 79 carries. He also leads the league in yards per carry at a whopping 11.4 yards. Mississauga’s backfield, in gen- eral, is to be feared, said Moore, as their other ball carrier, Jordan Wil- son Ross, also has the ability to pile up yardage. In fact, Ross also plays for Canada’s national rugby team and will be headed stateside on an athletic scholarship in football in the fall. Moore acknowledges the Dol- phins have their hands full with Mis- sissauga. “The Mississauga organization is extremely well-organized and well- coached. They are technically com- petent for this age level (under 20 years of age),” said Moore, adding the Warriors’ defence and special teams play is also solid. “Mississauga is basically a coach’s nightmare to prepare for – tricky to coach against speed, as they say,” explained Moore. Moore says, however, that if his Dolphins continue to play solid, relatively penalty-free and error-free football, they’ll definitely have a shot to unseat the Warriors. “Our team has come a very, very long way this season. In both of our playoff games we took fewer pen- alty yards than our opponent. In two playoff games we have had a grand total of only one offensive turnover versus seven takeaways. Penalties and turnovers have been a big con- tributor to our play-off success and naturally we hope to keep that going this week.” To a certain degree, Moore says the Dolphins almost enjoy being un- derdogs so far in the playoffs, and Saturday’s game will be no excep- tion. Their underdog status is under- lined by some injuries to key defen- sive starters for the championship contest. “Our players have punched above Dolphins ready for next ‘Goliath’ ✦ See Dolphins, Page 22 Submitted photo The Pickering Heat junior women’s fast-pitch team was the silver medallists at nationals in Summerside, P.E.I. Beijing 2008 gtaathletes.com Pickering dragon boat teams golden in Malaysia PICKERING — It’s too bad drag- on boat racing wasn’t an option in the Olympic Games for Canada. That’s because the Pickering Dragon Boat Club’s HEAT team won nine medals in nine events at the 2008 Club Crew World Cham- pionships in Penang, Malaysia re- cently. HEAT team members formed four crews and competed in the 200-metre, 500-metre and 2,000- metre events. The women’s team won three gold medals, the men’s team won a gold medal and two silver medals, and the mixed crew won two gold medals and a silver. Although HEAT was nip-and- tuck to win some of their medals, team coach Ryan Brown was happy with the results at the worlds. “A number of these races were extremely close with the HEAT team finishing ahead of a competi- tor by a mere 53/100ths of a sec- onds,” said Brown. “I am extreme- ly proud of the team’s combined successes. Our results certainly position us as the world’s No. 1- ranked program (50-and-over age category) in the world. We can’t wait to start training for our next challenge.” The 50 men and women who form the grandmasters HEAT team are all over 50 years of age. Pickering Gators U13s sink teeth into soccer opponents Girls’ squad continues strong season on the pitch PICKERING — The Pickering Gators girls’ U13 rep soccer team scored several important soccer victories on the pitch of late. The Gators played a Cup game in Cobourg, entering the win-or- go-home contest without their two goalkeepers who were un- available, forcing a player who had never played a game at the position this season into action. The coaching staff’s fears were unfounded, however, as the Ga- tors pushed through for a 7-0 vic- tory -- playing one of their best games of the season. Alannah Hamdic earned the shutout in her goalkeeping debut. Merissa Jaipaul led the way with a hat trick; Kylie Bulmer added a pair of goals and Alyssa Corne- lius and Kendra Smith recorded singles. The Gators also registered a big 1-1 draw with an extremely talented Toronto Eagles squad, which the Gators had tied earlier in the Central Girls Soccer League season and lost to in the semifi- nals of their first tournament of the season in Niagara. In an ex- tremely physical and tense game, the Eagles led 1-0 for a long time, up until the moment that Kendra Smith got away from her defender and beat the Eagle goalie with several minutes remaining. The Gators competed at the Can-Am Challenge in Aurora. They were the top team of nine after the preliminary-round con- tests. Unfortunately, they lost out to the Etobicoke Vipers in the semifinals on penalty kicks in a torrential downpour. The Pickering girls grounded the East Gwillimbury Talons 8- 0 in CGSL action in Mount Al- bert. Jaipaul led the way with two goals, followed by Lauren Cran- field, Cornelius, Christine Dirosa, Smith, Allie Vanhout and Nelly Salvagna with singles. The Gators also prevailed over the West Rouge Storm 1-0 in CGSL action. The Storm had not lost a league game until running into the Gators. Alannah Hamdic scored on a penalty-kick with less than three minutes remaining in the game. Earlier in the month, the Ga- tors took part in the Robbie In- ternational Tournament in Scar- borough where they played the second ranked team in Ontario (Oakville) and one of the top teams in Quebec (Montreal Lake- shore), giving each team a great battle but losing to each. The Gators continue to lead the way in the CGSL Division 4 1A, with a 6-0-2 record. Around 6 p.m. Aug. 6, Durham Re- gional Police responded to the inva- sion-style robbery, which they have determined was not a random act. The victim reported to police that he was in his backyard when the two men approached and demanded money. He said he didn’t have any, and was punched in the face numerous times before the men forced him into his house and ransacked his bedroom looking for money. When nothing was found, they took his wallet and fled in a dark-coloured vehicle. Police found and arrested the suspects shortly after. Imad Al-hassania, 26, of Bray Drive, and Timothy Rector, 22, of Field Cres- cent in Ajax, are charged with robbery and break and enter. Both were held for a bail hearing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Dan McKinnon at 905-579-1520 ext. 2544. Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477 and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward. The Durham Youth Housing and Support Services received a three-year, $175,000 grant. Among the services offered by the group is a 10-bed youth shelter in Ajax with an oc- cupancy rate of more than 90 per cent, said Mary Dunlop, the executive director of the agency. The agency applied for the grant and some of the funds will be used to pay Ms. Dunlop’s salary. Her salary has been coming out of the agency’s operating budget and with a previ- ous Trillium grant. She’s been in the posi- tion since February of 2007. “It’s not just an application that went to pay the executive director. There are outcomes that have to be met. We had to explain to Trillium what we want to do with the funds and the expectations of the grant,” Ms. Dunlop said, adding the agency has already received the first installment. In addition to paying her salary, the agency is “looking at how to improve all our procedures,” she said. It will also look to expand services and “we’ll look at how we work with other orga- nizations. Grant will help agency expand youth services newsdurhamregion.comNow with RSS content feeds Event to raise funds to help save poet’s home PICKERING — Some Durham poets hope to help save some Cana- dian history. The Pickering Public Library will hold the Purdy Poetry Marathon on Tuesday, Aug. 19 and Wednesday, Aug. 20, where the library’s writ- er-in-residence, Martin Avery, and other Durham region poets, Kevin Craig and Elise Kubsch, will write as many poems as they can in 48 hours. The event is intended to help save the home of the late great Canadian poet, Al Purdy. He died in 2000 after publishing more than 40 poetry books. The home he helped build in Ro- blin Lake, Ameliasburgh, Prince Ed- ward County, is in danger of being sold or torn down since his widow can no longer care for it. Funds raised will go to A-Frame Trust, which hopes to turn the Purdy House into a writers’ retreat. “The Purdy house should serve as a monument to Purdy’s life as one of Canada’s greatest poets,” Mr. Craig said. “Let’s find out if poetry can save the house that Al built.” The marathon will include a num- ber of poetry-related exercises, such as readings, prompts and mini-work- shops. It could be the first event of its kind in the world, according to an organizer. “There are a few poetry reading marathons,” Mr. Avery said. “But this may be the world’s first poetry writ- ing marathon.” For more information, or to take part in the marathon, e-mail kevintcraig@hotmail.com. Partici- pants are encouraged to stay for the entire marathon, but those who can- not can come and go throughout the 48 hours. They’ll receive a package that in- cludes a pledge form to collect spon- sorship funds.
