The black and white short-haired cat crawled out from under a small Ford car at Lone Star Texas Grill in Pickering on July 23. He had ridden underneath the car, hanging onto the exhaust, that travelled the 40 kilometres from Bowmanville to Pickering, including Hwy. 401. His journey can be proven by looking at his paws, which were badly burnt from the ex- haust. “He’s definitely very lucky to survive that trip,” said Lindsey Brenner, supervisor of Pickering Animal Services. “He’s one special cat.” You may think his name came from ‘Indi- ana Jones’, but staff at animal services said the name seemed to fit because his “hair is on the Ford.” The driver recognized Harrison as a com- mon stray in her Bowmanville neighbourhood, Ms. Brenner said. The scabs on his paws just came off and he’s been bandaged up, and once he’s back to normal in a couple of weeks he’ll be ready for a loving home. The extremely af- fectionate Harrison is about two years old and is one of many cats Animal Services currently shelters. It has responded to more than 100 calls regarding cats and dogs running at large this year and although almost all of the dogs have been claimed or adopted, nearly 30 cats remain at the shelter, at 15 Reesor Rd., in the Reesor Road and Taunton Road area of Scar- borough. Five kittens were recently brought in after being dumped outside of PetSmart. The Ontario Provincial Police found four- month-old Freeway at the side of Hwy. 401, and he’s ready for a new home. Lucky Bear was hit by a car and a truck and found on the same day and in the exact same spot as a black bear on the loose in Pickering in May. Another abandoned cat is not only feeding her four kit- tens, but is playing mother to another three at about four weeks of age. “She’s now nursing all of them,” Ms. Brenner said. Pickering Animal Services is filled with similar stories, and although the cats are well taken care of, they need a home, which will also makes room for the next ones that come along. “Our top priority is sick or injured (cats) or kittens,” Ms. Brenner said. Adopting a cat costs $85, which includes a pet licence, the initial set of vaccinations and sterilization. If a kitten is too young to be spayed or neutered, the new owner will receive a rebate certificate of $75. If cat owners haven’t already, they’re encouraged to get a licence since it makes it easier to reunite lost pets with their families, and to get them sterilized, which does more than just keep the pet population down, Ms. Brenner said. “It’s been proven to improve some of their temperaments, decrease their wanting to stray and different types of cancers,” she said. For information, to view cats that have been found, and those ready for a new home, visit www.cityofpickering.com/animals or call 905- 683-7575. Now Dr. Mann has taken on the role as the new interim site chief of RVAP’s emergency department. Dr. Mann says that he is proud and delighted to see the ongoing progress with the redevelop- ment of the new emergency department and its related services at RVAP. Of course, as an emergency physician, Dr. Mann could practice anywhere he wished. So why has he stayed? “I really haven’t had a desire to work any- where else. I’ve worked with some senior nurses here since I was a pup. It’s a great team. Plus, the expansion here is exciting.” Family guy Rouge Valley Health System warmly welcomes its new chief of family medicine,Dr. Jawad B. Khokhar. After a complaint was made by a Toronto man about the Toronto Transit Commission, the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal ruled the TTC’s failure to call out all stops violated the human rights of persons with disabilities. The tribu- nal ordered all transit op- erators to call out the stops in order help people with visual impairments. As of Jan. 2, all DRT driv- ers have been told to call out stops, said deputy man- ager Phil Meagher. He said both DRT and the Canadian Auto Workers union, which represents the bus driv- ers, are reinforcing that the stops should be called. This includes regular announce- ments over bus radios about the issue. “We’ve even prepared stop announcement books for all of our operators so when they’re doing the route, there’s uniformity, they’re calling the same stops,” said Mr. Meagher. The books went out at the end of July, after DRT sur- veyed and listed 2,661 bus stops, each of which should be called on every route. But it’s not happening in Durham, reports Cyndie Sproul, an Oshawa resident who is legally blind. Ms. Sproul said drivers are aware of her disability since she shows her card from the CNIB, formerly known as the Canadian Na- tional Institute for the Blind, to get on the bus for free and uses a guide dog. She said she’s aware of only one bus driver who regularly calls out the stops and she was doing it before the ruling from the human rights tribunal. “In fact when I ask them to tell me when my stop is, more often than not they forget,” said Ms. Sproul. That leaves her relying on fellow passengers to tell her when her stop is coming up. “It’s a little demeaning. I certainly appreciate the passengers’ assistance and it certainly isn’t their job and that’s relying on anoth- er passenger to be there.” Scott Pigden, chairman of the Oshawa Accessibility Advisory Committee, said it doesn’t matter who is on the bus, the stops should always be called. “It doesn’t take much for the bus driver to pick up the microphone when they come to the stop. It helps everybody, it doesn’t just help the visually impaired, it helps everybody,” said Mr. Pigden, adding people who are unfamiliar with the area are helped as well. Mr. Meagher said he’s received some complaints about the issue and encour- ages riders to call and com- plain to DRT if stops aren’t being called by visiting www.durhamregiontransit. com or calling customer service toll free at 1-866- 247-0055. “The problem I have is I have to deal with the group as a whole, (when) someone calls me with a complaint about a specific route, at a specific time on a specific bus, I can deal with that indi- vidual,” he said, also adding that DRT is working on get- ting an automated system that announces the stops. While Mr. Pigden worries that some people may feel too intimidated to call and complain, Ms. Sproul said she’s complained in the past and she’s willing to give it another shot. The Province announced re- cently it was giving the three com- panies bidding to build the reac- tors the extra time to submit pro- posals. The new deadline is Dec. 31 of this year and the winning vendor will be chosen by the end of March, 2009. The submissions were originally to be in by mid-September. The deadline for the reactors to be in-service remains July 1, 2018. Lorne Burger, a spokesman for Infrastructure Ontario, said even with the extended time-line for proposals, “the overall time-line is the same. It’s still the same in- service date. “There’s time early on to add three months. It won’t affect the overall time-line,” Mr. Burger said. The provincial government an- nounced in mid-June the two re- actors would be built next to the Darlington nuclear station. The successful bidder will construct the units and Ontario Power Gen- eration will operate them. Three companies are in the bid- ding -- AREVA NP, Westinghouse Electric Company and Atomic En- ergy Control Limited, builder of the Candu reactors used at the Pickering and Darlington stations. The extension was sought by the three vendors, Mr. Burger said. “They’ve asked for more informa- tion regarding the procurement terms. “They want to discuss the more technical parts. They want to un- derstand the risk we want them to take on,” Mr. Burger said. The final cost of the two units won’t be known until the final ne- gotiations with the winning bid, he said. Under the procurement project, the builder of the units would be responsible for having the reactors built on time. The builder would be responsible for any costs if the construction extended beyond the start date. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 8, 2008 durhamregion.com I n 1989, the House of Commons in Ottawa unanimously voted to achieve the goal of eliminating child poverty by the year 2000. Campaign 2000, a non-profit organiza- tion that tracks progress towards that goal, said there’s been none since 1989. In 2007, the same proportion of Canadian children, 11.7 per cent, lived in poverty. Ontario’s child poverty rate is 12.6 per cent, similar to Durham where 12.3 per cent of children live below the poverty line. It’s disheartening to realize eight years after the target date and almost 20 years since the goal was set, we as a nation have collectively accomplished nothing. Meanwhile an entire generation of chil- dren grew up, with many of them now fac- ing the exact same hardships their parents faced. But in that time, the cost of housing has gone up relative to incomes, as has the cost of food and transportation. Not sur- prisingly, government benefits to the poor have not. I recently spoke with one grandmother who is raising her grandson after his moth- er died. She expressed frustration that the boy would receive more financial support from the government if he was in foster care. As an Ontario Disability Support Pay- ment (ODSP) recipient, the grandmother was also frustrated the National Child Ben- efit Supplement she received was deducted from her ODSP payments. That changed as of this July and she will also receive the Ontario Child Benefit (OCB) for her grandson. But as many recip- ients of social assistance know, the govern- ment often gives with one hand and takes with another. Her grandson will lose his back-to-school and winter clothing allow- ance since it’s been rolled into the OCB. The Income Security Advocacy Centre, which was established by Legal Aid Ontar- io, calculates a single mother with one child receiving Ontario Works is only better off by $31 per month as of July, with that figure growing gradually to $50 per month by 2011. For families living paycheque to pay- cheque, it’s hard to imagine that small amount of extra money will be used for anything but the necessities and when it comes to extra clothing, the dollars just won’t be there. Last month, the Durham Advisory Com- mittee on Homelessness (DACH) met to come up with recommendations to the provincial government which is working on a poverty reduction strategy. One of the common themes among Regional employees, non-profit groups, churches and recipients of social assistance was that child poverty cannot be tackled on its own. The entire family must be sup- ported whether they’re working poor or recipients of ODSP or OW. Ed Goerz, executive director of Corner- stone, which provides housing support including emergency shelter, pointed out part of that is ensuring we’re not demon- izing the poor and labeling poor children as deserving of support and adults as undeserving. We know what the keys to fighting are, income support, housing sup- port, affordable childcare and educational opportunities. The challenge is to find a way of addressing those issues so people get a hand up instead of running through government mazes and ending up where they started. The other key is to convince all Ontar- ians, and indeed Canadians, that letting our fellow citizens fall through the cracks hurts us all. It’s both a moral and eco- nomic imperative that we finally and fully fight poverty instead of letting another 20 years go by with nothing to show for it. Reka Szekely’s column appears every third Friday. E-mail rszekely@durhamregion.com It’s time to battle poverty I t’s a small thing, but it makes a huge difference to many people. Drivers of Durham Region Transit buses have been ordered to call out stops on their routes to help passengers with visual impairments. The decision, made by the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, would aid passengers beyond those with dis- abilities; anyone who is unfamiliar with the routes and neighbourhoods they’re travel- ling in would welcome that little bit of extra help from the driver. But, despite the order having gone out at the beginning of the year, and despite the DRT having prepared stop announcement books for all operators to achieve uniformi- ty, many passengers complain the drivers remain silent. Across Durham, there are 2,661 stops identified by DRT that should be announced by drivers, an idea that’s backed up by the Oshawa Accessibility Advisory Committee. “It doesn’t take much for the bus driver to pick up the microphone when they come to the stop. It helps everybody; it doesn’t just help the visually impaired,” notes Scott Pigden, committee chairman. This is a great point since many rid- ers may not be regular transit users and remain unfamiliar with the routes they’re travelling. New residents are moving to our communities every day and are learn- ing their way around. But, for the visually impaired, having a stop called out can make the difference between retaining independence and relying on other pas- sengers or guesswork. No doubt Durham Region Transit operators are not delib- erately trying to circumvent the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal or trying to thwart their passengers by remaining silent as the bus rolls up to another stop. It is likely a question of habit and adopting a new practice. But it’s August, and the new rules have been in place since January. The DRT should not have to hear from passengers at this late date that stops are still not being called out. Perhaps it’s time for the DRT to go beyond handing out announcement booklets and invest in some driver training. Those who approached the tribunal in the first place, and the tribunal itself, certainly thought the issue warranted some kind of remedial solution. Durham Region’s transit system has not been rolling along as a unified, amalgamated system for long. Making it more user-friendly by announcing the stops for passengers is just the ticket. Mr. Dixon’s counterpoints to MP Mark Holland’s statements are misleading and out of order. Whereas Mr. Holland cites the use of our tax dollars to send partisan advertisements to voters, Mr. Dixon replies with, of all things, the gun registry and the sponsorship scandal. Bob White, his son-in-law Mike Doran, and granddaugh- ters Katie, 29, and Julia are tooling around Ontario on their motorbikes this week. It’s a bit of a test drive, before Mr. Doran accompanies Julia, 27, as she heads out to Vancouver to look for work. Mr. White, 78, has been riding motorcycles since he was 17, while Mr. Doran has been a rider for 30 years. The reason for the trip, Mr. Doran said, is “for fun. This is a holiday. This is a vacation. It takes a little bit of co-ordina- tion, with jobs and everything. It’s a different type of family vacation.” Mr. White said the trip “sounded like a good idea.” Joining them on the trip as a passenger is Mr. Doran’s wife, Lois. The first week will be spent “doodling around Ontario,” Mr. Doran said, although he added the original plans have changed. Lois Doran had decided she wasn’t going to go on the trip, but then changed her mind. “The plans keep changing. As of last night (Thursday), my wife wasn’t going. Now she’s decided she’s missing out. It should be a lot of fun,” Mr. Doran said. He said Mr. White has been looking forward to the adven- ture. “I think he’s totally excited about this, going off with his granddaughters.” The trip across Canada isn’t the first for Mr. Doran. “I’ve been across Canada with the girls on the back of the bike. It’s the first time they’re actually riding the bike. They just got their licence last year.” He bought the girls their motorcycles. “I told them if they guarantee me one week to 10 days a year, I’d buy them a bike. It’s a little selfish. I wanted someone to ride with.” The trip around Ontario and then out west will take nine to 10 days, with the group riding 400 to 500 kilometres daily. durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 10 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 8, 2008 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 8, 2008 PAGE 11 A/Pdurhamregion.com By Jennifer Stone jstone@durhamregion.com NEWCASTLE — Some of the fields at Wilmot Orchards look like a cannon went off -- and that’s a good thing. Orchard owner Charles Steven- son credits his hail cannon -- a device that uses shockwaves from blasts to stop hail from falling on a field and destroying a crop -- with saving his apple crop during this summer’s unstable weather. “My nerves are fried because of the amount of hail that’s been around,” Mr. Stevens said. “We’ve used our hail cannon more this year than any year in the past 10 years. “We think we’ve saved our (apple) crop.” At the same time, a good crop of blueberries is ripe for the pick- ing at the Newcastle farm. While farmers elsewhere in the prov- ince have bemoaned the over- abundance of rain as negatively impacting their berry crops, the same doesn’t hold true at Wilmot. Blueberry picking opened to the public Monday and “people are getting good berries,” Mr. Stevens said. Installation of tile draining has helped ensure the berry crop, he said. “Every year, on Jan. 1, I wake up and say, OK, what’s Mother Nature going to throw at us this year?” Mr. Stevens said. “It always throws something at you and suc- cess of any operation depends on how you deal with it. “If I hadn’t tile drained, I’d be in big trouble.” So, despite weather conditions, this year’s blueberry crop has “quality and flavour just as good as it’s ever been.” £ÈÎxÊ6ˆV̜Àˆ>Ê-ÌÀiiÌÊ >ÃÌ]Ê7…ˆÌLÞ]Ê" ]Ê£ ʙ7{ÊUÊ/ii«…œ˜i\ʙäx‡xǙ‡Ç{nÈÊUÊÜÜÜ°}œv̜ܘ°Vœ“£ÈÎxÊ6ˆV̜Àˆ>Ê-ÌÀiiÌÊ >ÃÌ]Ê7…ˆÌLÞ]Ê" ]Ê£ ʙ7{ÊUÊÜÜÜ°}œv̜ܘ°Vœ“ Up to 50% OFF name brand men’s and women’s golfwear * MENS Tommy Hilfiger 50% OFF Cutter & Buck 50% OFF Greg Norman 40% OFF Ashworth 40% OFF Oakley 40% OFF AUR 40% OFF Dunning 40% OFF Nike Golf 30% OFF Adidas 30% OFF WOMENS AUR 50% OFF EP Pro 50% OFF Lija 40% OFF Liz Golf 40% OFF Tommy Hilfiger 40% OFF Cutter & Buck 30% OFF Nike Golf 30% OFF Adidas 30% OFF Tail 30% OFF MENS Tommy Hilfiger 50%O F F Cutter & Buck 50%OFF Greg Norman 40%O F F Ashworth 40%OFF O akley 40%OFF WOWW MENS AU R 50%O FF E P Pro 5 0%O FF Lija 40%O FF Liz Golff 4 0%O FF Tommy Hilfiger 40%OFF Clearance continues... The loss announced Friday morning in a news release out of Detroit is the third largest in the company’s 100-year history and more than twice that of rival Ford. Costs associated with the American Axle strike that temporarily shut down both truck and car manufacturing in Oshawa earlier this year -- as well as the costs associated with reducing truck capacity -- are also blamed. GM announced June 3 that the Oshawa truck plant is among four that will be shut down due to slumping truck sales. “The company has outlined a strong cadence of product, powertrain, capacity and liquidity actions over the past 60 days, to realign the busi- ness with current U.S. economic and auto market conditions, and position the company for profit- able global growth,” the company said in a news release. About 2,600 jobs will be eliminated in Oshawa as a result of the decision to close the truck plant in the second half of 2009. GM reports $15.5-billion loss Get Local 24/7 mobile.newsdurhamregion.comnewsdurhamregion.com Students use their time to get a jump start on compulsory credits By Crystal Crimi ccrimi@durhamregion.com DURHAM — When Robyn Hobbs goes back to school this September, her course load will be a little lighter than many of her friends. That’s because she’s using this summer to get a head start on her compulsory credits in sum- mer school. “It makes it a little easier I find,” said Robyn, a 16-year- old student at Whitby’s Sinclair Secondary School, entering her Grade 12 year. “And then you don’t have to worry about all these classes as well – you just focus on one thing.” She’s not the only one taking that route. As of July 3, the Durham Dis- trict School Board had 1,069 students enrolled in accelerated courses through summer school, said John Beatty, superintendent of Durham Continuing Educa- tion. There is also 1,865 students taking remedial or upgrading summer school classes. Accelerated programs can help reduce the amount of com- pulsory credits required during the school year, Mr. Beatty said. “So they can fit in an arts pro- gram,” Mr. Beatty said. This is the second full-credit course Robyn’s taken since her cousin told her it was easier. Last summer, she took math, while this summer she’s taking Grade 12 English. For Grade 11 math, which isn’t her best subject, she scored a mark in the high 70s op- posed to in the 60s. Getting the course out of the way made her school year more relaxed. “It was a relief because I didn’t have to worry about doing it, I al- ready finished it,” Robyn said. “It allowed me to take a little more easier courses like co-op.” She took her co-op at an el- ementary school and now thinks she’d like to be a teacher. But, the experience is one she couldn’t have realized without summer school or else she wouldn’t have been able to achieve enough university courses. “It sucks having to go to school while my friends are out, but during the year it ends up being worth it,” she said. Students can use their sum- mer break to upgrade a mark as well. “Even if they passed the class, they could retake it for practise,” Mr. Beatty said. In Grade 9 and Grade 10, the higher mark is the only one that shows on their transcript. The biggest benefit to summer school is it keeps students con- nected, Mr. Beatty said. (Summer school is) “some- thing to consider and shouldn’t be viewed as punishment for something not done in the school year,” he said. It’s either smog or fog A FRIENDLY ‘NEE HOW’ TO YOU FROM THE OLYMPIC GREEN IN BEIJING, CHINA BeijingBeijing 2008 2008 Stay up-to-date on your local competitors at gtaathletes.com BEIJING -- I may never remove my media accredi- tation badge from around my neck... ever. Ron and I arrived today and settled into our new home in the Huiyuan Media Village by 7 p.m. Thurs- day in Beijing after a long and uneventful 13-hour flight from Toronto. So a friendly “nee how” to you as I write this from the 17th floor of our apartment with the Bird’s Nest National Stadium in plain view out the living room window. And, unfortunately, not much else. There are some lights on at one of the Olympic venues, but at this point, without being familiar with the layout, it’s hard to tell which sport it will house. Other than that, the sightlines are very poor tonight because of the fog. Or is it smog? Having just arrived, it’s hard to tell the difference at this point. Although it’s a safe bet that it is smog hovering around the tops of all of the tall buildings off in the distance. The roof of my mouth feels like I just slid into second base... head first. It’s a gritty film left after a long day at the ballpark. Back to the accreditation passes. Since stepping off the plane and walking through the airport in Beijing, we have been treated like roy- alty. Kids appearing to be old enough to be in univer- sity immediately recognized our passes and came to greet us, motioning and escorting us through to have our passports checked. After picking up our luggage, security guards standing watch over esca- lators quickly parted and greeted us with ear-to-ear smiles, motioning us past long lines. Somebody standing off to the side muttered, “They must be important.” If they only knew the truth. Volunteers loaded our luggage onto the shuttle for the media village, and on the way, a nice young girl asked us if the temperature on board was OK. How can you not like that kind of treatment? But it gets better. The trip to the media village was quick, the result of an Olympic lane reserved strictly for shuttles. Pas- sengers on other buses looked long and hard at our bus as we passed by, no doubt trying to get a good look at the foreigners who have invaded their coun- try. There was lots of traffic. Perhaps it was rush hour as we passed through around 5:30 p.m. Makes me wonder what the gridlock would be like if the rest of the cars that were supposedly taken off the road were part of the stop and go. Upon arrival at the media village, a group of three guys were clamouring to get our luggage off the shut- tle, place it on a trolley, and escort us to our room. A young hostess opened the door for us and took the time to show us how the keys opened the doors to the bedrooms. It was no different than at home, but the gesture was appreciated. Everyone is super friendly with big smiles and ready to spring to our aid. It’s the sort of spoiled treat- ment a guy could get used to. ...It’s been nice to be out on the field, get the bugs out and get ready for action. The thing is, getting the bugs out may be a little harder than we’d anticipated. So far everything I’ve written in my blog has been extremely pos- itive. Don’t get me wrong, things are going well and we’re having a great time. But when it comes down to it, we’re here to compete and losing is failing. We had a practice today at the main stadium. The Fendai softball com- plex has four diamonds and all the games will be played on the main stadium field. The other fields will be used for warm ups. Being on the main stadium field was a pretty big deal. It was supposed to be our primary tune-up before the Games. Unfortunately we didn’t put our best foot forward. Sure, there were moments of brilliance...great plays here and there...but there were also some flat out bad ones. Usually this wouldn’t matter. You learn pretty quickly in a sport like softball to shrug things off and move on to the next play. We play one pitch at a time for a rea- son. But today things were different...there was a sense of urgency. There was a feeling of panic of “We’re at the Olympics and if we aren’t perfect, what’s going to happen?” It hit me today that clearly this experience is going to be what we make of it. It’s not going to be all rainbows and sunshine and we’re good enough that it’s not going to be a blowout. Finding a balance between our expectations and our performance level and managing our mental game is going to be key over the next two weeks... THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 8, 2008 PAGE 17 A/Pdurhamregion.com Canadian men and women have enjoyed suc- cess throughout the years at the Summer Olympic Games, most notably on the track and in the water. These are some of the athletes that have posted individual game bests since 1928. Phillip Edwards 1928 4x400m relay -- bronze 1932 800m -- bronze 1932 1500m -- bronze 1932 4x400m relay -- bronze 1936 800m -- bronze Nicknamed the “Man of Bronze,” Phillip Edwards was born Sept. 13, 1907, in Georgetown, Brit- ish Guiana (now Guyana). He leads the way for Canada with five career medals, including three at the 1932 games. Following secondary school Edwards moved to the United States to pursue running, enrolling in New York University. After establishing himself as an Olympic-calibre ath- lete, he was not eligible to compete for the United States and British Guiana did not have a team. He was invited by Melville Robinson, manager of the Canadian Olympic track and field team, to compete for Canada in 1928. He later enrolled at McGill University, where he captained the track team. Marnie McBean 1992 Double Sculls -- gold 1992 Quadruple Sculls -- bronze 1996 Coxless Pairs -- gold 1996 Eight with Cox -- gold Marnie McBean, born Jan. 28, 1968, and her long-time rowing partner, Kathleen Heddle, were the first Canadians to win three Olympic gold medals. McBean tried to add to those totals at the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia. She was set to represent Canada in the single scull, but a back injury that eventually required surgery forced her to withdraw. In 1997, she was inducted into Cana- da’s Sports Hall of Fame. Kathleen Heddle 1992 Double Sculls -- gold 1992 Quadruple Sculls -- bronze 1996 Coxless Pairs -- gold 1996 Eight with Cox -- gold After winning a record-breaking third Olympic gold medal in rowing at the 1996 Games in Atlan- ta with partner Marnie McBean, Kathleen Heddle quietly retired from the sport she ruled. After tak- ing a year off, she worked as a sports adminis- tration consultant and travelled as an athlete rep- resentative with the International Rowing Federa- tion. Victor Davis 1984 200m breastroke -- gold 1984 100m breastroke -- silver 1984 4x100m medley relay -- silver 1988 4x100m medley -- silver Victor Davis was widely regarded as the great- est breastroker Canada has ever produced. During his career he established several world records as the winner of 29 national titles and 16 medals in international competition. He was named Swimming Canada’s Athlete of the Year three times, voted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame (1985) and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame (1990). Outside a nightclub in a Montreal suburb in 1989, he was struck by a car. Two days later, the 25-year-old died of his injuries in hospi- tal. Anne Ottenbrite 1984 200m breastroke -- gold 1984 100m breastroke -- silver 1984 4x100m medley -- bronze The pride of Whitby, Anne Ottenbrite pulled off the trifecta of medals, winning one of each at the Olympic Games held in Los Angeles. She fought through adversity, considering just weeks prior to the Canadian Olympic trials, she dislo- cated her knee. Even though she failed to qualify at the trials, Canadian head coach Trevor Tiffany gave her a reprieve, adding her to the team. She remains the only Canadian athlete to win gold, silver and bronze in a Summer Olympic Games. In the aftermath, she was inducted into the Inter- national Swimming Hall of Fame, the Canadi- an Sports Hall of Fame, the Swim Ontario Hall of Fame and had the pool at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby named in her honour. Elaine Tanner 1968 100m backstroke -- silver 1968 200m backstroke -- silver 1968 4x100m freestyle relay -- bronze Born in 1951 in Vancouver, Elaine Tanner was nickmaned “Mighty Mouse,” partly because of her small stature and partly due to her competi- tive spirit. In 1966 at the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica she won four gold medals and three silvers. As a heavy medal favourite at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, she won two indi- vidual silver medals and one relay bronze. She retired from competition after the 1968 Olym- pics at just 18 years of age, and was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1971. The Elaine Tanner Award has been presented to Canada’s top junior female athlete since 1972. In 1969, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. Under the Athlete Excellence Fund, athletes earning a gold medal beginning with the Olym- pic Games in Beijing, China will be rewarded with $20,000, while a silver will fetch $15,000 and bronze $10,000. Individual athletes, as well as each athlete competing on a team, will be compensated for the full amount for each medal won. Coaches, on the other hand, have to be satis- fied with a job well done. “I’m not really surprised,” said Wendy Dob- bin, an assistant coach on the women’s softball team, who harbours no ill feelings that coaches were snubbed. “It is all about the athlete. Coach- es, in a lot of ways, take a step back. “The coaches do it for the passion and the love and the opportunity to bring the athletes to their ultimate,” said the Oshawa resident who grew up in Pickering. “If we do that, they are coming away with something at the end of it beyond the medals and there is value in that.” How many will see a pay day? REWARD ALL THEIR EFFORTSREWARD ALL THEIR EFFORTS AJAX’S CANDACE CHAPMAN MAKES HISTORY WITH OUR FIRST-EVER GOAL Candace Chapman made history Wednesday. It just took her a minute to realize it. With a well-placed blast from about 30 metres out, the Ajax native scored the first goal for Cana- da in Olympic women’s soccer history, propelling her team to a 2-1 victory over Argentina to open the Beijing Games. “After the ball went in the net, I turned around and it just hit me that this is the first goal we’ve ever had in the Olympics,” said Chapman. “It was a special moment for me and my teammates.” The special moment came in the 27th minute and preceded a Kara Long score in the 71st that put Canada out of reach in a game it controlled pretty well from start to finish. The result puts Canada in a good spot to earn a berth in the quarter-finals next week. After games against China on Saturday (7:45 p.m. in Beijing, 7:45 a.m. in Ajax) and Sweden on Tuesday (5 p.m. in Beijing, 5 a.m. in Ajax) , the top two teams from the group advance and the third-place team will, too, if it has one of the best two records of the third-placed teams in each of the four groups. For Chapman, the historic goal came only after some quick thinking. After Rhian Wilkinson’s cor- ner was deflected back towards midfield, Chap- man stepped into a right-footed shot from well out hit nothing but the back of the net for her fifth goal with the national team. “I was like, ‘I’m just going to take a shot and try to keep the ball down, not sky high it,’” said Chap- man. “I hit it perfectly.” -- Doug Smith, Torstar news services GTA athletes to watch this weekend Beijing Time: 12 hours ahead of local time SATURDAY AUGUST 9 6:30 a.m. • Michael Winter, Toronto, Eventing 10 a.m. • Olga Ovtchinnikova, Toronto, Vencing 11 a.m. • Michael Barry, Toronto, Cycling 3:30 p.m. • Crispin Duenas, North York, Archery • John David Burnes, Toronto, Archery 5 p.m. • Chris Cook, Whitby, Sailing • Martha Henderson, Toronto, Sailing 7:15 p.m. • Michael Winter, Toronto, Eventing 7:45 p.m. Women’s Soccer: Canada vs. China • Watch for Candace Chapman of Ajax, Kara Lang and Diana Matheson of Oakville and Jonelle Filigno and Robin Gayle of Mississau- ga 8:21 p.m. • Alexandra Komarnycyk, Toronto, Swimming 400 IM 8:45 p.m. • Mike Brown, Oshawa, Swimming 100 Breaststroke SUNDAY AUGUST 10 6:30 a.m. • Michael Winter, Toronto, Eventing 9 a.m. • Avianno Chao, Toronto, 10m Pistol 10 a.m. - 8:40 p.m. • Igor Tikhomirov, Richmond Hill, Fencing 10:39 a.m. • Alexandra Komarnycky, Toronto, 400 IM Final 10:58 a.m. • Mike Brown, Oshawa, 100 Breastroke Final 12 noon • Sasha Mehmedovic, North York, Judo • Avianno Chao, Toronto, 10m Final 1 p.m. • Gord Cook, Toronto, Sailing • Chris Cook, Whitby, Sailing • Martha Henderson, Toronto, Sailing 4 p.m. • Jon Beare, Toronto, Rowing Lightweight 4 5:20 p.m. • Ashley Brzozowicz, Rowing Women’s 8 5:40 p.m. • Andrew Byrnes, Toronto, Rowing Men’s 8 6 p.m. • Sasha Mehmedovic, North York, Judo Final 6:54 p.m. • Colin Russell, Burlington, Swimming 200 Free 8:40 p.m. • Savannah King, Toronto, Swimming 400 Free Don’t miss.... Cook will be one of 14 sailors representing Canada in nine of the 11 classes being contested in Beijing. Cook’s class, Finn sailing, is the most demand- ing of the bunch, which explains why he spends five days a week training, including three-plus hours on the water, an hour warmup beforehand and hour of lifting at night. “It’s the most physical boat in the Olympics,” said Cook, who’s 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds. “Because it’s a single-person boat, you have to do every- thing. You’ve got to make the tactical decisions, you’ve got to do the physical work, which makes it really difficult. You have to be fit more to forget about the potential pain in you legs, and think about what’s going on around you. It makes it a pretty unique boat.” Sailing is scheduled to take part over seven days beginning Saturday Aug. 9, but Cook said weather conditions could see some days can- celled and others hold as many as three races. “This part of China’s not known for it’s great wind, so unfortunately we’re going to have a cou- ple of days sitting around I think,” he said. -- Brian McNair, This Week OSHAWA-BORN MIKE BROWN WILL BE AT THE WATER CUBE SATURDAY Swimmer Mike Brown is enjoying the atmo- sphere of the athletes’ village before he gets to work in the pool. We caught up with Mike at the Canadian flag- raising ceremony in Beijing. “This feels great,” said the Oshawa native, who now lives in Perth, Alta. “We’re here to win but I’m not going to promise a medal or guarantee any- thing.” Brown admits he’s got a lot on his mind as the clock ticks down on his first appearance in the pool Saturday at 8:45 p.m. in the 100m breast- stroke (the final is Sunday at 10:58 p.m.). He says he’s usually unable to quell his overactive imagination. “My brain goes like crazy and I think about the race and I think about the outcome, which I shouldn’t be doing,” Brown said. TIDBIT: Brown is a fan of the new Speedo LZR Racer model swimsuit that will be popular among swim- mers in Beijing - and a suit in which 38 world records have been broken since February. Brown, a silver medalist at the 2005 worlds, said he’s taken two seconds off his personal best times for this time of year. “Whether that suit will actually take two sec- onds off your personal best or whether it’s a com- bination of you thinking that it will and the suit, it doesn’t matter as long as that time comes off.” Torstar news services Steve Russsell / Torstar news services Lucas Oleniuk / Torstar news services Ron Pietroniro / Metroland 24/7 coverage gtaathletes.com durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 20THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 8, 2008 DURHAM — Veridian is taking to the road and hitting up local events and sites in a summer tour aimed at saving energy. There are layers of history, time, family, culture and technology in Reciprocity and six nations auto- mnemonic and New Photographs, an exhibit of works by Toronto- based artist Greg Staats. The exhibit is made up of pho- tographs and video, said curator Olexander Wlasenko. Staats is of Mohawk and Dutch descent, born and raised on the First Nations reserve of Six Na- tions on the Grand River Terri- tory near Brantford. Many of the photographs were taken there, Wlasenko said. “We really do get a sense of that reserve in his works,” he said. “It’s a place that comes up again and again in his works.” Staats has said his work, mostly in black and white, comes from “his continued study of the emo- tional architecture of shelter,” rooted in his childhood on the Six Nations territory. The layers of the exhibit can be seen in the generations -- cultural, familial and technological -- de- picted and used. There are photos dating from the 19th century through to today. The earliest is from 1965, of First Nations chiefs seated for a group photo. There are also photos of Staats’ family, including one of his grandfather taken 100 years ago and his father’s portrait in the post-war years, and of his family home. There are Staats’ own gela- tin, silver-print photographs rang- ing from the early ’90s through today. And his digital photographs taken more recently. The exhibit also features videos, yet another generation of tech- nology and another generation of family and culture, Wlasenko said. Some of the video pieces are recordings of Christian hymns sung in Mohawk and recorded by Staats’ grandfather in the 1960s. Wlasenko said the recordings are “quite haunting.” “These are Christian hymns that are coming from overseas, from Europe, but they are being sung in the language of the indigenous peoples of the area,” he said. “I like the multiple layers in this exhibit,” he said. “It gives a real sense of history. It’s really about the hybrids that happen through time and space.” Staats’ family archives are also represented, including his father’s letters and diary. Another part of the exhibit fea- tures coloured photographs, al- though the colours are faded to re- flect the historical aspect of them, Wlasenko said. Staats has taken stills from a 1951 National Film Board documentary, The Long- house People, that was filmed on the Six Nations territory. Although the documentary was filmed years before he was born, Staats found it resonated with him as he knew many of the people and places shown in it. It called up childhood memories for him, even though the film itself is beyond his existence, Wlasenko said. In its introduction to the exhibit, Station Gallery information notes Whitby’s historical timeline men- tions little of pre-European time, when Huron and then Iroquois nations inhabited the area. About the only recognition of that history is the name of the sports complex located near Station Gallery -- Iro- quois Sports Complex. The curator will be giving a talk on the exhibit Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. The exhibit itself continues through Aug. 31. Station Gallery is located at 1450 Henry St. History, culture, family, technology layered in Durham photo exhibit PICKERING — The fusion of original Celtic and classical styles of Moira Nelson and Elena Jubinville will return to Pickering this summer. PICKERING — Dolphins’ players celebrate their 34-20 win over the Huronia Stallions of Barrie in their recent Ontario Varsity Football League senior confer- ence semifinal. Falcons’ defenders Chelsea Gordon, Courtney Godfrey and Erika Forbes and midfielder Jade West will graduate to the NCAA Division 1 ranks where they will all play their freshman seasons on athletic scholarships with the fledgling University of Arkansas- Pine Bluff (Pine Bluff, Arkansas) Golden Lions women’s soccer team. The Golden Lions return to NCAA Division 1 play in the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) this fall after an ex- tended absence. It’s an all-new experience for all members of the UAPB squad being built from the ground up. Manny White, coach of the Falcons U18s, notes it’s a rarity for players to be re- cruited en masse from the same soc- cer team, but adds the UAPB women’s soccer head coach Roberto Mazza, a Ca- nadian, is glad to have the Pickering team players on board for the season. “I know their coach is very ex- cited. He likes to see the chemis- try they’ll bring because they’ve been playing together for so long. They’re going to help his team.” For their part, the four players are glad to stick together, and happy to start their U.S. colle- giate careers with familiar faces on the soccer pitch. “It’s going to be awesome,” says West, 17, of Ajax. “We al- ready know each other, so we’ll have a sense of home while we’re there, so it’s not going to be as bad.” “I’m really ex- cited for that,” says Godfrey, 18. “I’ve known these girls for quite a while. We’re kind of like sisters.” While Forbes, the Falcons’ captain, is comforted by having her teammates attend university and play soccer with her, she’s also excited to meet new team- mates at UAPB. “We have friends there, but none of us will be roommates, so we’re not stuck totally to the same people who we’ve been with forever. We do want to make new friends,” says Forbes, 18, who hails from Whitby. All four Pickering players re- ceived notice from the UAPB head coach after attending a number of showcase tourna- ments in the U.S. Gordon, 18, of Pickering, says she didn’t enter the scholarship process wanting to keep the gang together at UAPB, but after sift- ing through other scholarship offers she was happy to sign on with other teammates to the deep south college. “There were other offers in- volved. I heard what everybody had to say and, in the end, I just narrowed it down and Arkansas was the best one,” says Gordon, a St. Mary Catholic Secondary Soccer teammates to stick together on university team ✦ See Pickering, Page 28 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 8, 2008 PAGE 23 A/Pdurhamregion.com SCHOOL BUS TRAINING STARTS NOW!!!!! But, on the whole, they’re going to do well. It’s not easy playing in the NCAA as the coaches have a lot of pressure on them to win. The girls will have to work hard, but all of them are capable of doing it.” West will study biology and pre-dentistry at UAPB, Forbes will be in the classroom for biology or nursing, Gor- don will study nursing and Godfrey will be part of the school’s business program. The four Pickering players will join their UAPB team- mates for two-a-day workouts on Aug. 13 and will begin play on Aug. 23 when they will be pitted against Louisiana State University in a contest to be played at Jackson State Uni- versity in Jackson, Mississip- pi. • Weekends – $40 Weekday only $32 • Fleet of 54 Yamaha power carts • Driving Range • Practice Green • Licenced Club House & Patio • Twilight rates available • Men’s, Ladies’ and Seniors’ Leagues • Great membership rates Visit www.porthopegolf.ca For Money Saving Coupons 82 Victoria Street, Port Hope • 1-800-346-5361 CHEQUE CASHING NOW AVAILABLE $$ $$$$ $$ 105 Bayly St. W. In seventh heaven over scholarships PICKERING — In addition to the four Falcons players attending the University of Ar- kansas-Pine Bluff, three others -- Meagan Heney, Paige McDowell and Amanda Morris -- also earned U.S. scholarships. Heney, 17, of Ajax, will attend Newberry College (NCAA Division II) in Newberry, South Carolina, where she will play on the Newberry Indians women’s soccer team. “I talked to a lot of Division II schools and Newberry was one of the better ones,” says Heney, a graduate of Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School. “I liked the people and the atmosphere at the school and I liked the town.” Meanwhile, Paige McDowell will attend Brescia University in Owensboro, Kentucky, where she will play with the Bearcats women’s soccer team.
