The Pickering
Resident says proposed
area sees too much
crime, drug dealing
By Kristen Calis
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING — Rover will have to stay on a
leash in Pickering this summer.
The issue of a leash-free dog park came
to council for final approval recently after
finally being passed by the executive com-
mittee, following two years of preparation by
the leash-free working group and Pickering
Animal Services.
But after receiving complaints about the
proposed location at the Hydro Corridor on
the east side of Valley Farm Road, north of
Finch Avenue, council chose to defer it until
more locations are chosen.
The working group had come up with
a number of locations, but after studying
the different sites, the group and Pickering
Animal Services thought the Hydro Corridor
was the best place.
But at the meeting, resident of the pro-
posed area, Jacqueline Lappin, who has two
dogs, and supports a leash-free park, said
the Valley Farm location won’t work.
The neighbourhood is plagued with drugs,
she said, adding the area has seen recent ho-
micides and grow-op seizures.
What struck her most with the dog park
proposal is the parking lot that would ac-
company the park.
“The last thing I think we need is a 24-
hour car parking lot in a secluded area,”
she said. She also said the speeding cars are
dangerous for the dogs, and thinks the park
will disrupt the wildlife in the area, including
migratory birds, deer and foxes.
In an e-mail circulated to its supporters,
the working group said it supports council’s
decision to look at other locations since
it wants a park that’s safe, accessible and
enjoyable for all. New locations should be
ready for executive committee consideration
in September or October, according to Chief
Administrative Officer Tom Quinn.

Kevin Chorley with his dogs Skipper, left, and Willy Bear, and Matt Wright and his dog Jasper, make use of the off-leash park at the corner of Clem-
ents and Westney roads in Ajax. The City of Pickering is having trouble finding a location for a similar park, with the latest spot being dumped because
of concerns about drug deals and wildlife.

Suspect in 1974
killing released
DURHAM — There’s been
another remarkable twist in
a murder mystery that has
baffled the people of Dur-
ham Region for more than 30
years.
Alan Smith walked out of
court a free man Thursday
after the Crown announced
it was withdrawing a charge
of second-degree murder
against him.
Meeting with report-
ers outside the courthouse
Mr. Smith, flanked by fam-
ily members and his lawyers,
insisted he’s not the person
who shot 22-year-old Beverly
Smith in the back of the head
“I did not murder Beverly
Smith,” said the 56-year-old
Mr. Smith (no relation to the
slain woman), his voice qua-
vering as he faced a bank of
TV cameras.
“This has been a terrible
ordeal for myself and my
family,” he said.
Mr. Smith wouldn’t com-
ment on the police investiga-
tion that led to charges being
laid against him.
The stunning development
unfolded Thursday morning
in an Oshawa courtroom
when prosecutor Telena
Mulligan told a justice of the
peace the Crown was aban-
doning a charge of second-
degree murder against the
Cobourg man.
“There is no reasonable
prospect of conviction and
the police investigation is
continuing,” Ms. Mulligan
said.
Outside court lawyer Tom
Balka said the move marked
vindication for an innocent
man.
“They got the wrong man
on these charges,” Mr. Balka
said. “He’s not guilty.”
Mr. Balka said the case
against Mr. Smith has been
shaky from the start and his
defence team had anticipated
a long legal battle.
“He was expecting this day
to come but the fact that it’s
here is obviously a relief.”
Mr. Smith heard his charg-
es withdrawn at about 10 a.m.
but remained in custody at
the King Street West court-
house until 3:30 p.m., when
he was finally processed and
released. Throughout the day
relatives and supporters kept
a tense vigil, waiting as charg-
es relating to Mr. Smith’s bail
conditions in neighouring
Northumberland County
were withdrawn.
Late in the afternoon he
emerged, said a few words
to reporters, then hopped
into the front passenger seat
of a blue pickup truck that
whisked him out of the park-
ing lot.
Mr. Smith made national
headlines last March when
he was charged with second-
degree murder in the kill-
ing of Ms. Smith. The young
mother was killed by a single
gunshot wound to the back of
the head in her Raglan home
Dec. 9, 1974.
The arrest came after a
highly-publicized re-opening
of the case by Durham Re-
gional Police, who early this
year held a press conference
to appeal for information. A
team of detectives and uni-
formed cops conducted nu-
merous interviews with wit-
nesses first spoken to more
than 30 years ago and fol-
lowed new leads.
Among those witnesses
was Linda Smith, Al Smith’s
ex-wife, with whom he lived
in Raglan in the 1970s and
who was with him when he
discovered Beverly Smith’s
body the night of the murder.
Ms. Smith has since been
charged by Durham police
with obstruction of justice,
a charge typically laid when
police believe a witness has
lied or failed to disclose infor-
mation pertinent to an inves-
tigation.
Mr. Balka said it appears
police relied heavily on in-
formation provided by Linda
Smith as they progressed with
their investigation.
“The case appeared to de-
velop when Mr. Smith’s wife
made a statement to police
... it appears that led to the
arrest,” Mr. Balka said.
Mr. Balka was critical of
Durham police, who held a
press conference that includ-
ed statements from relatives
of the slain woman follow-
ing Mr. Smith’s arrest. He said
press reports appearing after
that media event all but con-
victed Mr. Smith before he’d
had his day in court.
“It poisons the public’s
mind against the person,”
Mr. Balka said. “It implies the
case is solved.”
Durham homicide detec-
tive J.J. Allan said the police
service is not commenting on
developments in the case.
“At this stage the investiga-
tion is ongoing,” he said.

DURHAM — Custom-
ers doing their banking on
Tuesday may have been
greeted with a new dollar
coin and an Olympic athlete
between their transactions.
Olympian Jayna Hefford,
a three-time medalist as a
member of the women’s
hockey team, was in Dur-
ham visiting three Royal
Bank of Canada branches
to sign autographs for
fans who could also trade
in some change for a new
“lucky loonie.”
The lucky loonie is a tra-
dition that started at the
2002 Olympics in Salt Lake
City where a Canadian ice
maker froze a dollar coin
into centre ice before the
hockey events. Canada’s
men’s and women’s hockey
teams both won gold that
year.
Ms. Hefford was one of
the athletes who collected
gold on the ‘lucky’ ice.
“It’s always an honour to
play for Team Canada and
every time I have a chance
to wear a Team Canada
jersey it’s something that
brings me a lot of pride.”
The 2008 coin was re-
leased July 23 and 10 mil-
lion of the loonies have
been produced by the Royal
Canadian Mint.
The coins were designed
by wildlife artist Jean-Luc
Grondin from Quebec. The
coin displays an image of a
loon landing on the water.
The mint distributed the
loonie to each athlete on
the Canadian Olympic and
Paralympic teams heading
to Beijing.
The change on the dol-
lar coin is a thrill for some
collectors who come into
the bank the day a coin is
released “with big smiles
on their faces,” said Chris
Adams, manager of client
care for the RBC branch on
Victoria Street in Whitby.
Many do not share the
same enthusiasm or aware-
ness that the coin has
changed.
“Most customers, to be
honest, don’t notice,” he
said. Regardless, the new
coin is a chance for RBC to
show its Olympic spirit, said
Travis Capes, RBC regional
vice president for Durham
Region.
“The launch of the Lucky
Loonie has been a fantastic
opportunity for RBC to cel-
ebrate the Olympics in our
community,” he said in a
news release.
“As the longest standing
sponsor of the Olympics,
we are proud to show our
support and want to pass
on as much luck and good
fortune as we can.”

No more quick fixes
for old building
By Kristen Calis
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING — Band-aid solu-
tions at the Greenwood library fi-
nally lost their glue this past win-
ter, but upcoming repairs could
change its fate.
“We’ll do it once and do it right
and hopefully the problems won’t
persist,” said Ward 3 City Council-
lor David Pickles.
The library is currently board-
ed up due to severe damage, but
council approved $50,000 recently
for repairs to the 1860s building.
The library has seen declining use
since the mid-90s (largely due to
the wide-range of resources at the
Central branch), while flooding
this winter ruined the foundation
and the furnace died.
A number of residents attend-
ed a recent public meeting after
hearing the library could possibly
close during budget discussions.
At the meeting the Pickering
Library Board said declining use
has been prevalent, while users
argued the Greenwood branch
hours (Tuesdays and Wednesdays
from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and
Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m.) were
not accommodating.
Estimated costs are: $7,000 to
replace damaged wood and dry-
wall to address the leaky base-
ment; $10,000 to repair the front
access, side landing and stairs;
less than $10,000 to reshingle the
roof; and $15,000 to $25,000 to
replace the washroom.
Original estimates to repair the
foundation alone were as high as
$100,000, and council had to de-
cide whether it was worth saving.
Coun. Pickles put forward a mo-
tion to put $50,000 into a contin-
gency fund so if council chose to
fix it up, money would be there.
He was happy that once the
estimates came in, council unani-
mously agreed fixing it was worth-
while.
“Not everybody was support-
ive at the time, but I think we’ve
brought them around,” he said.
The furnace will be replaced
with a more efficient natural gas
one, which will reduce emissions
and be less costly to operate.
The hours will change to better
suit the residents and programs
will be added to increase use. The
new plan will be reviewed with
Greenwood residents in the next
couple of months, and the revised
services will be evaluated every
six months with the community,
then sent to council.
If all goes well, the library
should reopen sometime in Sep-
tember.

Not all services are good
value for the tax dollars
To the editor:
Re: ‘Pickering designated an urban
growth area’, News Advertiser, July 6 is inter-
esting and relates to Jimmy Kalogris’s letter
to the editor in the same issue.
I recently received my municipal tax bill
for 2008 – WHOW! Pondering the services
we received for this grand sum, I came up
with the following, which is not inclusive:
• Number of items that are recyclable
have been greatly reduced (No value for tax
dollars here. Award the recycling tender to
a company who will recycle more, not less).
• The rejected recycling is now garbage
(No value again).
• Garbage collection is now once every
two weeks (Yes, if recycling was better).
• We eventually get our streets cleared
of snow but too often the speeding plows
shoot snow back onto the sidewalks, not to
mention driveways. (Yes and no for value).
• The power has gone out in my neigh-
bourhood about a dozen times this spring.
(No value here. The City should investigate
the horrid quality of the delivery of electric-
ity to homes in some parts of Pickering).
• Why are parking tickets issued to visi-
tors and residents who park in front of their
own house during the day? (Selective tax
for parking and no value for my tax dollars).
• Dedicated City workers. (Good value).
• Library system (Yes good value).
• Regular policing and fire service (Good
value).
• Some councillors want to expand
Pickering into Seaton and the Agricul-
tural Preserve so they can generate more
tax dollars to continue delivering some
sub-standard services to more residents.
(Definitely no value. Please, politicians of
Pickering and Durham, get it right before
we expand).
Larry Noonan
Pickering
One year, two kids showed up at
the door selling chocolates from
the dollar store for an increased
price of $2. Although it was referred to as
a scam by some, in actuality it was admi-
rable.
Here were two kids, 10 or 11 years old,
taking the initiative and making their own
work. Why shouldn’t they have been paid
more for the product? They went out and
bought it, then brought it to households in
their neighbourhood, sparing chocolate
cravers from having to go out and get it
themselves.
It’s our responsibility as adults to sup-
port and nurture the desire to work in
youth; the only way to really do that is to
give them a chance. Nothing feels better
to a kid then having money they earned in
their pocket.
It’s their first taste of independence real-
ly and it’s especially important for those
between ages 12 to 14, who generally have
a harder time finding work. This tender
age group is when youth are old enough
to be left at home without a babysitter and
are starting down the path of self-discov-
ery. They can be easily influenced to have
a positive attitude and ethic toward work,
or be pulled in a direction of idle hands
doing the devil’s work.
According to the Ministry of Labour, 14
is the minimum age to work at industrial
establishments such as offices, stores,
arenas, and restaurant serving areas. Age
15 is the minimum for most factories
including restaurant kitchens, automotive
service garages, produce and meat prepa-
ration or shipping and receiving areas in
grocery stores, laundries and warehouses.
But, it can be hard for kids to get
employers to give them a chance.
To help the 12 to 14 age group in their
quest for summer employment are some
tips from Meagan Orozco, summer stu-
dent co-ordinator with the John Howard
Society of Durham Region.
When submitting a resume, leave your
age and grade off of it so employers can’t
automatically dismiss you as too young,
she said, Instead, put attending high
school or working toward your Ontario
Secondary School Diploma. For inter-
views, talk, act and dress older – no jeans
or T-shirts. Wear a dress shirt or any col-
lared shirt instead.
Jobs such as newspaper delivery, dog
walking, and lawn mowing are some
good ways to break into the job market,
she said. Service Canada has an Odd Job
Squad that can help hook kids up as well.
Many kids also don’t know about
accessing the hidden job market and cold
calling. With a friend or parent, youth
can go door to door letting people know
they’re looking to cut lawns or do other
jobs.
While a paper route may not seem like
a big deal to kids to add onto a resume, it
helps them collect work experience and
show an employer they’re committed and
eager to work, Ms. Orozco said.
The more people who know you’re look-
ing for work, the more chances you have
at getting something.
The same goes with babysitting. Before
summer, tell people you’re interested in
doing some. To increase chances at get-
ting a gig, students can take babysitting
training courses, which include CPR, how
to deal with choking, and caring for a
baby.
Kids can also visit the John Howard
Society or other youth employment agen-
cies to get help with their job search and
resume development.

Just days until the Olympic flame is lit in Beijing
T he countdown to Olympic glory is
on. Just seven more sleeps until the
world’s very best athletes complete
their lifelong dream to compete with the
entire planet watching.
There is nothing else quite like the Olym-
pics. Billions of dollars are spent by the host
country in a seven-year plan to impress
billions of people around the world.
Just take a look at the futuristic venues the
Chinese organizers have built. The bird’s
nest main stadium, the water cube swim-
ming facility, the spaceship-like gymnastics
hall . . . just about everything built for these
Games has an otherworldly touch.
More than 10,000 athletes are now
descending on Beijing, many of them com-
ing to China for the very first time. Fans
from all continents will also be there, eager
to soak up some culture from one of the
world’s most fascinating countries.
There will be wall-to-wall media cover-
age on a multitude of networks. But to
get an inside perspective on how athletes
from Durham are faring, there is no better
place to turn to than www.gtaathletes.com.
Click on that website and you’ll get insight,
features and all the latest information from
Torstar media reporters, including Dur-
ham’s own Brad Kelly and Ron Pietroniro.
Brad and Ron have plenty of experience
covering athletics and will be in Beijing for
the duration to write and photograph the
likes of 100-metre hurdler Priscilla Lopes-
Schliep of Whitby, 100-metre runner Anson
Henry of Pickering and many others.
There are concerns that Chinese authori-
ties will attempt to control information and
restrict activities of media members and
spectators alike while in the Communist
country. But it’s to be hoped that, at least
while the Olympics take place, the best and
the brightest can shine and the full story
involving all the drama of the Games can
be witnessed.
The motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger”
is essential to the Olympic spirit. So is the
feeling of one world coming together to
celebrate what is truly best about our civi-
lization and about all the diversity, colours
and cultures mankind exhibits. May these
Games be the best ever.

Question: I have a
pet. What options
do I have for dealing
with her “waste”?
(Especially since my
garbage is collected
every two weeks.
Help!)
1. Bag the waste material along with your regular garbage
and place it at the curb for your bi-weekly collection. Please
remember each garbage bag must not exceed the
maximum weight of 20 Kg (44 lbs.)
2. Bury the pet waste in your backyard or use a pet waste
composter such as the Doggy Dooley (Doggie Dooley ®
units are available through www.doggiedooley.com or by
calling 1-419-483-3501).
3. Flush the pet waste down the toilet.
If pet waste is handled and stored properly between pick-ups, it does not pose a health
hazard:
• Bag the waste and store in a container with a tight fi tting lid to prevent insects,
animals and other pests from gaining access. Please note: Garbage will not be
collected from containers in Oshawa and Whitby.
• Store garbage bins in a cool location when possible to keep odours to a minimum.
• Practice good hand-washing after handling garbage to prevent illness.
Question:
My Green Bin
sometimes smells
bad, any tips
on how to
control this?
Due to the contents of the Green Bin, there might be a
slight odour. However, the material going into your Green
Bin is the same material that once went into your garbage.
You can reduce odours by washing your Green Bin and
Kitchen Catcher with a mild detergent as required and by
emptying Kitchen Catchers frequently. The Kitchen Catcher is
dishwasher safe. Some additional tips include:
• Keep the Green Bin dry and the lid closed
• Do not place Green Bin in direct sunlight
• Line your curbside Green Bin with a large paper food waste bag or a certifi ed
compostable liner bag made for your curbside container to help keep it clean.
• Clean out your fridge a day or two before your collection day.
• Store meat scraps in the freezer until collection day, if space permits.

Pickering resident
a ‘true pioneer’
PICKERING — Murray
Skinner, the recently retired
president of Metroland
Media Group Ltd., is set
to receive the Suburban
Newspapers of America’s
(SNA) highest achievement
award.
Mr. Skinner will receive
the Dean S. Lesher Award
for his leadership during a
33-year career that began at
the Richmond Hill Liberal.
He worked his way up to be-
come Metroland’s
vice-president of
marketing where
he served for 19
years before being
named company
president in 2000.
The Pickering
resident said he’s
thrilled to get the
award.
“I think I’m only
the second Cana-
dian ever to win it, which is
quite nice,” said Mr. Skinner,
who is the 27th recipient of
the award.
“Murray Skinner is a
true pioneer in our indus-
try. Among other tremen-
dous accomplishments, the
development of the qual-
ity distribution program at
Metroland has become the
gold standard that advertis-
ers request and many other
newspapers emulate,” said
Betsy Wilson, chairwoman
of the Dean Lesher Award
Committee.
“Murray has been very
generous in sharing his ex-
pertise and success formu-
las with newspaper com-
panies throughout North
America. I am very pleased
to have had the honour of
informing Murray Skinner
that he is this year’s recipi-
ent of this very prestigious
award.
“No one is more deserv-
ing.”
The nominating com-
mittee also recognized
Mr. Skinner for his tireless
passion and promotion of
community media and for
driving home the value of
community journalism
and leadership. During Mr.
Skinner’s tenure, Metroland
newspapers have won more
local, regional,
provincial, na-
tional and North
American awards
for excellence
than ever before.
However, he said
it isn’t just about
him, but all of
Metroland.
“This award is
coming to my
name, but it’s re-
ally an award for the kind
of innovation being done
throughout the company,”
said Mr. Skinner.
During his time at
Metroland, the company
has become the leading
community media compa-
ny in Canada.
In May, Mr. Skinner was
awarded an honourary
lifetime membership in
the Canadian Community
Newspapers Association
(CCNA), the organization’s
highest honour. As well, a
new CCNA award was cre-
ated in his honour.
Mr. Skinner will accept
his award in October in
Minneapolis at an SNA con-
ference.

DURHAM — An Oshawa tat-
too parlour briefly shut down by
Durham’s health department last
summer and six Pickering restau-
rants were among those convicted
of violations under Ontario’s Health
Protection and Promotion Act since
January.
The conviction against Oshawa’s
Longhorn Custom Body Art stems
from last summer when the Region
temporarily shut down the parlour
after finding a malfunctioning auto-
clave, which sterilizes the tattooing
equipment.
The tattoo shop was convicted
of knowingly furnishing false infor-
mation to a public health inspector
and fined $5,000.
Among the list of restaurants,
Pickering’s New Style Restaurant
Buffet, on Kingston Road, faced the
longest list of convictions with six.
This included two convictions for
storing food at an improper tem-
perature. The restaurant was fined
$700 for the violations and received
suspended sentences for four other
charges, which included failing
to ensure floors and the walls in
the food handling room were kept
clean.
John Ingrao, manager of envi-
ronmental services for Durham Re-
gion’s health department. said four
of the violations were tried after the
first two and no fines were imposed
because the restaurant had met
standards, however the convictions
were recorded. “That was all recti-
fied and they were able to maintain
a compliant operation,” he said.
The Bourbon Street Grill in
Pickering Town Centre was fined a
total of $750 as a result of three con-
victions, including failing to keep
the wall of food handling rooms
clean, failing to ensure equipment
surfaces washed as necessary. Also
in Pickering Town Centre, the Bagel
Stop was fined $245 after an op-
erator failed to wash hands before
resuming work.
Winston Shagwell’s, also on
Kingston Road, was fined a total
of $1,000 for two convictions, fail-
ing to ensure the floor in the food
handling room was kept clean and
failing to ensure a facility surface
was washed as necessary.
The Friendly Greek Restaurant,
on Kingston Road, was fined $25
after an employee failed to wear
headgear while working with food,
and Sunrise Grill, also on Kingston
Road, was fined $95 for failing to
provide soap or detergent in a food
preparation area. As well, 22 busi-
nesses were convicted of selling
or supplying tobacco to a person
under age 19 under the Smoke Free
Ontario Act.

Last two months
were ‘wet, wet,
wet’
By Jennifer Stone
jstone@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — It looks like
August is going to be “nor-
mal,” but compared to June
and July experienced here,
that could all but seem like
drought, says Environment
Canada senior climatologist
David Phillips.
That may be good news
to those who waited to take
holidays in August, said an-
other forecaster.
“August looks like it’s
going to be hot and dry,”
said Jill Taylor, meteorolo-
gist with 680News. “But,
having said that, I have
to say, weather is always
changing.”
June and July were “wet,
wet, wet,” Mr. Phillips said
Wednesday, as he awaited
confirmation we’d received
the tenth of a millimetre
necessary to put July in the
record books for rainfall.
“We had already broken
the record for the wettest
June and July on record”
by July 23, Mr. Phillips said.
Wednesday’s rain would no
doubt send it over the top
for the wettest July since
they started keeping track.
Not only has there been
a lot of rain, but there have
been more thunderstorms
than usual thus far this
summer.
“We’ve had 33 thunder-
storm hours, compared
with eight to this point last
year,” Mr. Phillips said.
“What happens when you
get thunderstorms is you get
these heavy rainfalls.”
For example, on July 20,
51.2 millimetres of rain was
reported at Pearson Airport,
Ms. Taylor said. In an aver-
age month, this area would
get about 70 millimetres.
“That’s crazy, to get 51
millimetres of rain in one
go,” Ms. Taylor said.
But not all is lost -- up
until Wednesday, there had
been only one day in July
in which the sun didn’t
shine for at least a portion
of the day. “The nature of
thunderstorms means that
sometimes you have thun-
derstorms and then, two
hours later, you have sun-
shine,” Mr. Phillips said.
Temperatures have been
“warmer than normal, but
you wouldn’t know it be-
cause of all the rain we’ve
had.”
The number of smog days
is also down, with nine so
far this year, compared with
21 to this point last year, Mr.
Phillips said. July was half
a degree warmer than nor-
mal, on average, while June
was two degrees higher.
“But the number of days
where we were above 30
(degrees Celsius) are way
down.” Lush lawns and soc-
cer fields are also testament
to the “upside” of having
received so much rain, Ms.
Taylor said.
Many meteorologists be-
lieve a phenomenon known
as La Nina -- a cooling of
water in the Pacific -- may
be partially responsible for
the wet weather, she said. It
was also likely responsible
for the heavier-than-normal
snowfall this past winter.
Traditionally, “the end of
July marks the end of La
Nina,” Ms. Taylor said.
Forecasts indicate August
is likely to be normal, Mr.
Phillips said.
“We’re calling for ‘near-
normal’ but that will be like
a drought in terms of rain,
compared with what we’ve
had,” he said.

Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985)
Directed by Hector Babenco
For the first time on DVD comes this little
independent gem from the mid-80s which
broke ground for indy films in corporate-
run Hollywood. Nominated for four Academy
Awards, including best picture, actor (William
Hurt), best director and screenplay, the film
would earn an Oscar for Hurt, solidifying his
reputation as one of the fine new American
film actors of his generation. Hurt
would earn two more consecu-
tive best actor nods before being
snubbed for what I consider his
best work, The Accidental Tour-
ist (1988), and beginning a low,
painful decent into oblivion, finally
making a comeback these last few
years.
Kiss of the Spider Woman was
based on the book of the same name
by Manuel Uig, and adapted for the
screen by writer Leonard Schrader.
Brazilian director Hector Babenco
came aboard hot off the success of the film
Pixote (1982). He was the perfect choice for
the tough character study.
Hurt is Molina, an effeminate homosexual
imprisoned in a harsh hellhole for statutory
rape, his cellmate the political prisoner Val-
entin (Raul Julia). Molina passes the time
recounting memories from his favourite mov-
ies, much to the anger of his cellmate, who
believes that Molina’s beliefs are fluffy and
have no place in the world. But as Molina
chips away at Valentin, the man opens up to
him and allows him into his world. An un-
likely friendship develops when Molina tends
to Valentin after he is poisoned by the guards.
They are the most bizarre of couples, the po-
litical prisoner being poisoned by his jailers
and the gay prisoner, slowly breaking down
the homophobia of his cellmate, revealing
a considerate, caring and kind man under-
neath. From the first moment he
is on screen, Hurt is the character,
in the manner in which great ac-
tors inhabit their roles. He never
overplays the homosexual-
ity of the character, but there
is something decidedly femi-
nine about him throughout
the film and something more,
something terribly tragic and
sad. His Oscar was a surprise
but entirely deserving, and
in his speech he thanked
his partner on screen, who
also should have been nominated.
Wargames (1983)
Directed by John Badham
In this day and age of high-tech video games
comes the re-release of Wargames, a fine little
thriller that seemed like fantasy so long ago
yet now is all too real. David Lightman (Mat-
thew Broderick) is a computer geek teen who
often goes into his high school’s computer
main frame and changes his grades, staying
out of trouble for the most part. By accident,
he hacks his way into the National Defense
Department’s system and engages a game
called Global Thermonuclear War, without
realizing he has set off what could be the Third
World War. The military believes the Russians
have aimed their missiles at the U.S. and are
preparing to do the same before David real-
izes what he is doing is not a game, sort of.
He becomes locked in a race against time to
find the creator of the game, created for the
military as training devices before the army
gets their hands on him, or worse, before one
of the two super powers thinks the other is
about to launch and does so for real.
Broderick made his major debut and be-
came a star over night; a quirky, original actor,
he was the perfect choice to take the geek out
of computer geek. And John Wood is superb
as the computer genius who created the game
before realizing what had he had done could
bring the planet to destruction. As thrillers go,
Wargames is terrific entertainment, but, with
the advances in video games, has become also
something of a cautionary tale.

Buick parade cranks
up festivities at Parkwood
By Betty Zyvatkauskas
A century after the McLaughlin Motor
Car Company produced its first Buick,
the McLaughlin family’s automotive
legacy is celebrated at Parkwood, the grand
former home of Canada’s first auto mag-
nate.
The free annual family festival on Aug.
4, McLaughlin Day in Oshawa, is expected
to attract some 2,000 visitors on for vintage
entertainment that evokes the early days of
motoring.
Members of the McLaughlin Buick Car
Club will drive some 100 pre-Second World
War Buicks through Oshawa starting at 10
a.m. in a homecoming parade to Parkwood
where they’ll be piped through the gates, a
fitting welcome for the car that moved Os-
hawa out of the horse-drawn carriage days
and into the automotive era.
The vintage cars, including a fully restored
original Model F dating back to the days
when windshields were a $50 optional extra,
remain on display throughout the day, both
at Parkwood and the adjacent St. Gregory
Church.
Old-fashioned entertainments, including
egg-in-spoon races and marionette pup-
pet shows, keep youngsters well entertained
while storyteller George Blake shares his ac-
count of R.S. McLaughlin’s rags-to-riches life.
Guided walking tours focus on the architec-
tural significance of Parkwood’s neighbour-
ing homes. Mini-tours ($5) of Parkwood’s
ground floor offer a teasing glimpse of man-
sion’s glories. Bring lawn chairs to enjoy
the Bruce Gorrie Trio’s jazz concert on the
mansion’s south terrace or dancing shoes
to learn how to jitterbug or Charleston with
Rhythm Dynamix’ 1920s dance demonstra-
tions. www.parkwoodestate.com.
In keeping with the automotive-themed
celebrations, Pingle’s Fun Farm on Taunton
Road, in Courtice, east of Oshawa, has carved
a massive antique Buick into the eight-acre
corn maze that opens Aug. 1. www.pingles-
farmmarket.com.
The Grand Prix of Mosport brings some of
the world’s top-level cars and drivers to the
track’s major event of the year. The Aug. 21
to 24 event, billed as Canada’s biggest sports
car race, will feature the two Audi R10 TDIs
that have been consistent winners this year.
Expect them to reach speeds of up to 340
kilometers per hour on the track’s long back
straight. Spectators should arrive early.
Mosport is a big circuit so it takes time to
explore and find that perfect place to watch
the action -- possibly corner 10 near the
front straight, the start/finish straight, the
top of corner 2 or the famous Moss Corner
5, named after Sir Stirling Moss. Take a chair,
hat and umbrella -- they race in the rain at
Mosport.
The race team paddock area offers specta-
tors a close-up look the cars and a chance to
chat with the drivers. www.mosport.com/

Aug. 4
AJAX — Lorraine Davies and the Too

The band will hit the stage at the Ajax
Royal Canadian Legion on Monday, Aug. 4,
from 3 to 7 p.m. It’s being held in the legion’s
club room, which will be open to the public
for the performance, although legion dress
code and rules will still apply.
The five-piece band has never played at
the Ajax Legion, although all band members
are from Durham Region. The band plays a
mix of classic rock, blues and country, in-
cluding some of its own tunes.
Over the past five years, the group has
played around Ontario and parts of the
United States. Having a band play in the
club room is a bit of departure for the le-
gion, as it’s usually one- or two-piece acts
that perform there. The Ajax Legion is at 111

Gold was the
goal for local
soccer girls
Lawrence, Exeter
pace Ontario U16s
at national showcase
By Al Rivett
arivett@durhamregion.com
AJAX — Two elite local soccer
players, one magical result on the
national soccer pitch.
Katherine Lawrence, 16, of
Ajax, and Christine Exeter, 15, of
Pickering, played major roles in
helping Team Ontario bring home
the gold medal from the 2008 BMO
National Championships U-16 Girls
All Stars in Sherwood Park, Alberta
last weekend.
All 10 provinces were represented
at the national showcase.
The Ontarians finished with a 4-1
record, good enough for gold ahead
of Quebec (silver) and Alberta
(bronze). Ontario earned wins over
Newfoundland and Labrador (3-0),
Alberta (3-1), Nova Scotia (2-0) and
British Columbia (4-2). The lone
blemish on their record was a 1-1 tie
with Quebec.
Ontario’s final game of the tour-
nament against B.C. had height-
ened significance as the victory kept
the Ontarians ahead of Quebec in
the battle for gold. Exeter rose to
the fore for Ontario, scoring all four
goals in the winning cause.
It was not something she thought
she could do, but the Ontario striker
was glad to emerge as a pivotal per-
former in the crucial game.
“It was good,” says Exeter. “It was
not expected, but I knew I was able
to do it based on my skills.”
In fact, Exeter won the tourna-
ment’s ‘Golden Boot’ award as the
top goal scorer, finishing with eight
goals in five games.
“I think I worked really hard for it.
I never would have thought, going
into the tournament, that I would
get it,” she said.
For Exeter, her incredible na-
tional tournament for Ontario was
proof positive she belonged on the
provincial squad at nationals. She
was left off the U14 team at the last
national championships two years
ago in Saskatchewan.
“I was cut from the under-14
team, so it made me work harder
to get to it this time. Experiencing
it (nationals) and winning gold was
the best feeling. It was an objective
and goal we set and that’s what we
were going for -- nothing less than
winning it. It was amazing.”
For Lawrence, nationals repre-
sented a chance to help Ontario
repeat as gold medallists, as she
also won gold with Ontario as an
U14 player two years ago. She was
one of six players on the Ontario
U16 squad that won gold in 2006 at
the U14 Girls All Stars in Saskatoon.
Lawrence, who played the cen-
tre back and full-back positions for
Team Ontario, says it was a simple
matter of being hungrier for gold
than the other provincial squads.
“I think we just wanted it more

tario U16 soccer team that captured the gold medal at the recent BMO National Soccer Championships in Sherwood
Park, Alberta. The Ontario girls posted a 4-1 record, needing a big 4-2 victory over B.C. to clinch the championship.
Exeter scored all four goals against B.C. and later was awarded the ‘Golden Boot’ Award as the tournament’s top goal
scorer.✦ See Soccer, Page 18

than any other team there,” she noted. “We had more drive. Our
goal was to win gold and we weren’t willing to let it fade away.”
Lawrence noted any one of Quebec, Nova Scotia and B.C.
had legitimate shots of dislodging Ontario from top spot at
nationals.
“All those teams actually played pretty well,” she said. “I knew
we had to go into each game with a bit more fight.”
Lawrence said the process to form the Ontario U16 began
in earnest last October when identified players for the team
trained four days a week at the Ontario Soccer Association
indoor facility in Vaughan.
Team Ontario reconvened in July for a two-day camp where
22 players took part. In the week prior to leaving for Alberta,
four players were cut from the squad, leaving 18 on the Ontario
team to vie for the national title in the age group.
And, even though she was a champion two years ago, Law-
rence notes winning gold never grows old.
“No, definitely not,” she said. “It’s a great feeling.”
Fast facts
With national gold medals around their necks, Katherine
Lawrence and Christine Exeter will now turn their attention to
more winning with their Ajax Storm U16 Ontario Youth Soccer
League squad.
The duo -- entering Grade 11 at Pickering High School
— has the Storm perched high in the OYSL standings, currently
battling with the Mississauga Falcons for overall supremacy.
The Storm currently own a stellar 10-1-1 record thus far in
OYSL play.
•••
In addition to being soccer players, Lawrence and Exeter
have excelled at track and field with the Pickering High Trojans
track and field team under head coach Cyril Sahadath.
Both qualified to compete at the Ontario Federation of
School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships earlier
this summer in their respective events.

“I like to professionally solve problems at
the lowest, most reasonable cost to the cus-

because it’s absolutely necessary.”
Crawford adds that if he can try something

“An interior weeping

The Pickering U10s, which
finished second overall in
preliminary play, faced top-
ranked Newmarket in the
championship contest. Game
most valuable player Gillian

lone goal on a penalty shot
for a narrow 1-0 victory.
Pickering opened up

game MVP.
Next, the Pickering U10s
squared off against the Fer-
gus-Elora Rovers in a com-
petitive contest. After a long
stretch of scoreless soccer,
Pickering came alive with
two goals by Leah Betts
and Sabrina Nasner. Those
goals stood up in a 2-0
Pickering victory. Panuncail-
man earned MVP honours.
Pickering played Newmarket
in Game 3, with Newmarket
needing a win to advance to
the final. Newmarket fought
hard in the defensive zone for
the ball and won a number of
challenges. They also showed
off their offensive prowess en
route to a 4-0 shutout win
over Pickering. Amara Pitt

In Loving Memory
of My Wonderful Pops
who left us 2 years ago
James (Jim) Cameron
March 7, 1927 - August 1, 2006
I often lay awake at night
When the world is fast asleep,
And take a walk down memory lane
With tears upon my cheek.
Remembering you is easy
I do it everyday,
But missing you is a heartache
That never goes away.
Loving you forever,
forgetting you never

KEARNEY, Norman Robert -It is with tremen-
dous sadness that we announce the sudden
passing of Norman Robert Kearney on July
28, 2008. He truly enriched the lives of many
and it is simply impossible to put into words
how much he will be missed by his family and
friends. Norm was born in Liverpool, England
on May 16, 1940. A true Evertonian and an
avid footballer, he was also an accomplished
guitarist and became a member of the De-
mons, a skiffle group that often played at the
Cavern Club in Liverpool. On occasion the
Demons even competed against a lesser
group called the Silver Beatles who soon left
for Hamburg and were never heard from
again. In 1960 Norm married Alma, his wife
of 48 years. They had two children, Sean and
Leah, before the family decided to immigrate
to Canada in 1973, a move that was in large
part due to Norm's ambitious and adventur-
ous spirit. Norm immediately fell in love with
this country and its limitless beauty and op-
portunity. After settling in Canada, Jay soon
became the youngest and most expensive
member of the Kearney clan. Norm was high-
ly accomplished in his career and worked for
over thirty years for Ontario Hydro and Onta-
rio Power Generation where he tackled in-
creasingly challenging roles and managerial
responsibilities. More recently, he worked
with Bruce Power in Kincardine, Ontario on a
project that he greatly enjoyed. He took tre-
mendous pride in his work and was a much
loved colleague. Norm also never tired of
learning and education, and completed a de-
gree in psychology in 1998. Those who were
fortunate enough to know Norm were well
aware of his passion for so much in life. He
loved to travel the world with Alma and they
toured throughout Australia, New Zealand
and continental Europe in recent years. Norm
was also a voracious reader with a particular
interest in American and military history. He
also played an active role over the years in
the Mariposa Folk Festival and continued to
delight friends whenever he picked up a gui-
tar and sang one of his favourites. Above all
else, Norm will be remembered for his great
wit and sense of humour, his generosity and
his unique talent for touching the lives of eve-
rybody he met along the way. Norm was a
devoted husband, father and grandfather and
was at his happiest with his family. The family
that he created with Alma was his greatest
achievement and a never ending source of
pride. He was our biggest supporter and
champion and instilled in all of us a belief that
we could achieve anything that we set our
minds to. He will be forever missed by his
wife Alma, his children Sean, Leah and Jay
and their spouses (Warren and Karen), his
four grandchildren: Aidan, Rory, Bridget and
Declan, and his sister and family back in
England .A memorial service to celebrate
Norm's life will take place at Deer Creek Golf
Club, 2700 Audley Rd. N, Ajax from 2-4 pm
on Thursday, August 7. In lieu of flowers, we
would ask that donations be made in Norm's
memory to Trent University, Greatest Need
Bursary Trust, Development Office, 1600
West Bank Drive, Peterborough, ON K9J 7B8
(705-748-1601). A Book of Condolence may
be signed at

House hunting on a summer’s eve
While most open houses are traditionally a
weekend affair, agents are changing things up
by moving many to weeknights this summer.
Trish French, Sales Representative with Remax
Rouge River Realty Ltd., Brokerage says
that real estate agents across Scarborough
and Durham Region are rescheduling open
houses to the middle of the week in order
to better accommodate the busy weekends
many people have during the summer.
“There’s so many things that go on in the
summer on weekends,” French says. “This
way, the buyer doesn’t have to miss the open
houses they truly want to see because they’re
away for the weekend.”
French says that weeknights are ideal for house
hunting because people can stop in to local
open houses on their
way home from work,
as the properties they’re
looking at are likely in
their neighbourhood.
They’ll also have more
free time to attend
the many weddings,
sports tournaments,
and cottage trips that
summer weekends often
offer.
Starting July 9 in
Scarborough and July
10 in Durham Region,
many real estate agents
from companies such
as Remax, Royal LePage,
Prudential, Sutton Group, and Coldwell
Banker will be holding evening open houses.
Homes that will be having the midweek open
house will be marked with a yellow banner
attached to the For Sale sign.
Depending on how the summer weeknight
open houses go, agents may keep them going
through the fall, too. And with all the extra
time agents will have to help their buyers on
weekends, it will be hard for this idea not to
take off.
“I see this as a real advantage for serious
buyers to be able to stay on top of the houses
on the market and be able to enjoy their
summertime without family timing confl icts,”
French says.
