Brittanni was one of about 40 people who attended a Wednesday afternoon “Gather- ing of strong voices” at the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital, the second one of the day. The gathering challenged the Rouge Valley Health System’s plans to cut up to 220 positions between RVAP and Centenary in Scarborough, and move the mental health inpatient unit to Centenary. This is mostly because mental health units must be staffed by a minimum of two people at all times, says RVHS. The Ajax site currently has two small mental health units, and amalgamat- ing the units into one will help RVHS ease its poor financial situation. It currently has a long-term debt and capital deficiency of $78 million. But, residents at the gathering thought it’s not worth the loss of beds in Ajax. “I know a lot of people who need these beds,” Brittanni said, who was there with her mom, adding those people need to be close to their families. Chief of psychiatry Dr. Steve Fishman said there will be no cut in services, and while amalgamating the unit may cause some in- conveniences for travel, he said the move will improve the quality of service by pooling expertise. Also, outpatient services will be increased at RVAP by extending crisis hours from 12 to 16 per day. A press release stated only 77 per cent of all 66 mental health beds at the two sites were used in 2006-2007. He said at Centenary, patients will be transferred to the 15-bed medical/psychia- try unit set to go in at the hospital. Two beds will stay in Ajax for emergency mental health situations. “This is clearly a difficult decision, but clinically, I think we’re providing an excel- lent service for our community,” Dr. Fish- man said. Registered nurse Carlo Perusin works in RVAP’s mental health unit and thinks the community needs the inpatient service to stay in Ajax. “Our vested interest is related to the client, their family and their welfare,” he said. He explained one in five Canadians has mental health issues and said the whole multi-disciplinary team in Ajax works well to support west Durham’s constantly-growing population. “It’s a well-oiled machine and we’d like to keep it that way,” he said. Protest organizer Wendy Holliday said the loss of the mental health beds affects people in Ajax, Pickering and Whitby and “mental health needs are growing because the community’s growing.” She said if patients have to travel to Scar- borough, they’ll be assisted by a nurse if it’s necessary. “How is that cutting costs?” she said. Wilson highest in Durham By Josie Newman jnewman@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The recent- ly released high school portion of the Fraser Re- port shows Sinclair and Donald A. Wilson second- ary schools in Whitby at the top of the heap in Dur- ham Region. Sinclair had an overall score of 8.3 in 2007, an im- provement over last year’s 7.5, but similar to its score of 8.4, 8.6 and 8.2 in previ- ous years. Donald A. Wilson re- ceived an overall score of 7.7, up from last year’s 7.4 and 7.5 in 2005. The Fraser Institute, a non-profit research and educational organization that studies the impact of competitive markets and government interventions on society, has issued the Fraser Report for elemen- tary schools since 2003, but has only issued a re- port on Ontario’s 725 pub- lic and separate, English and French high schools since 2007. As well as revealing av- erage test results for each school, the report shows whether the school’s per- formance improved or de- clined, the percentage of tests written by students who didn’t meet provin- cial education ministry ex- pectations, the number of English-as-a-second-lan- guage and special needs students at each school, and the average education level of the students’ par- ents. “I feel very good about the results. I can’t put a finger on any one particu- lar thing that’s helped us get to where we are,” said Warren Palmer, Donald A. Wilson’s principal. The school, located on Rossland Road near Brock Street, has 1,100 students. He said the school’s focus on assessment prac- tices in the classroom has helped it maintain a high rating. “We’ve been working hard on getting kids as- sessed on what they’re taught. “We’re working on criti- cal thinking skills and we’re going to start giving feedback to increase stu- dent achievement,” said Mr. Palmer, who’s been principal at the school since January, 2006. “It’s pleasing. It makes me feel good that I can share this information that our school improved from one year to the next,” said Ken McNaughton, princi- pal at Sinclair. “We’re committed to academics; our heads of departments work closely together and challenge students to a rigorous pro- gram. “Our goal is to pursue excellence,” said Mr. Mc- Naughton. Sinclair, located on Taunton Road near Brock Street, has 1,815 students. Home staging seminarYouth weight loss program starts up Municipalities, school boards, hospitals well up over one year By Tim Kelly tkelly@durhamregion.com DURHAM — It’s as in- evitable as property taxes and gas prices: the annual sunshine list of civil ser- vants who make more than $100,000 per year is way up yet again. A total of 42,457 workers made the list in 2007 across Ontario, up 24 per cent from 2006, which itself was up 24 per cent over 2005. In Durham, the top earn- er outside of Hydro One and Ontario Power Generation employees -- who work for province-wide corporations -- was outgoing Lakeridge Health CEO Brian Lemon, who was paid $346,361.51 last year. Mr. Lemon, who is the only CEO Lakeridge Health has ever had, is retir- ing in July after 10 years on the job. Lakeridge Health had 81 six-figure earners in 2007, up from 47 the year before. The Rouge Valley Health System featured 45 earn- ers who made more than $100,000 in 2007, up from 33 a year earlier. Among municipalities, Durham Region had 319 employees make the list, up from 184 last year. Top earner was CEO Gary Cubitt at $259,068.91. Included in the break- down are Durham police officers, 211 of whom make the list. The number of six-figure earners in the region’s larg- est municipality, Oshawa, doubled year over year. Os- hawa had 42 make the list in 2007, up from 21 in 2006. The Town of Whitby was second on the list with 33 in 2007, an increase from 11 in 2006. Twenty-two members of the Whitby list this past year are employees of the Whitby Fire Department. While Mayor Pat Perkins made the Whitby list, her salary of $101,235.01 in- cludes her regional council- lor pay in addition to her compensation as mayor. The City of Pickering had 31 workers on the list, up from 11 in 2006. The Town of Ajax had 22 members make the list in 2007, up from eight in 2006, while Clarington had 17 in 2007, an increase of six from 2006. In the three north Dur- ham municipalities, a total of five municipal employees made the list: two each in Scugog and Uxbridge and one in Brock. The Durham District School Board was up from 105 six-figure earners in 2006 to 121 in 2007, while the Durham Catholic Dis- trict School Board saw 53 employees make $100,000 or more in 2007. In 2006, there were 47 on the list. The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board had 38 workers hit $100,000 or more in 2007, up from 35 in 2006. The Peterborough Victo- ria Northumberland Clar- ington Catholic District School Board had 22 six- figure earners in 2007, un- changed from 2006. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology in- creased its total on the list from 32 sunshine members in 2006 to 47 in 2007. As for Durham College, it went from 45 in 2006 to 56 in 2007. F ollowing all the March Madness, aka the annual U.S. collegiate Division I men’s basketball playdowns, is a rite of spring for Pickering basketball phenom Devoe Joseph. But, the talented shooting guard plans to be more than a spectator to the Madness; he aches to be on the floor -- the sooner the better -- while wearing the gold uniform of the University of Golden Gophers. The 18-year-old basketball star, who’s earned props as one of the top U.S. college recruits to ever come out of a Canadian high school, hopes he can play a role in pushing the Gophers on to the grand stage that is March Madness as early as next sea- son. “That’s something I’m hoping for, it’s something I want to accomplish,” says Joseph, set to enter his freshman campaign at the Minneapolis, Minn. institution of higher learning. “I want to be in the tourna- ment every single year. It’s one of the great- est basketball events in the world and one of the greatest sporting events in the world.” Canadians have played, and prospered, as part of the 64 teams that set out to cut down the nets following the national cham- pionship game. This year is no exception as two Quebecers from Saint Lambert, near Montreal -- Max Paulhus Gosselin and William Archambault -- made their marks with tiny and unheralded Davidson College (North Carolina), pushing the Wildcats to the Elite Eight. By any measure, Joseph is no ordinary, garden variety Canuck hoopster heading off to a U.S. college program. Recently, Joseph was named to the world roster for the Nike Hoop Summit in Port- land, Oregon, where he and his teammates will play the top under-19 players in the U.S. on April 12. Joseph was a mainstay with the national junior men’s basketball team over the past two years and, this year, has earned a tryout with the senior national team, which is cur- rently embroiled in the task of qualifying for this summer’s Beijing Olympics. The 6-foot, 3-inch guard also put together an impeccable high school career at Pickering High School, capped by winning his second consecutive OFSAA title with the Trojans. With the ball in his hands in the waning seconds of the provincial final against the Eastern Commerce Saints of Toronto, Joseph hit a buzzer beater to allow Pickering High to repeat as ‘AAAA’ Ontario champs. He’s entering a U. of Minnesota program that’s clearly on the upswing, in no small part due to legendary head coach Tubby Smith. Smith guided his former team, the University of Kentucky Wildcats, to the Big Dance on a yearly basis, winning a national title in 1998. So, with the addition of Joseph, part of a U. of Minnesota recruiting class that’s touted as one of the best in the U.S., can a March Madness berth be far behind for the Golden Gophers and Joseph? For the record, Joseph’s picking the Uni- versity of Memphis Tigers to win this year’s national title. “I like their style of play, and I like (fresh- man point guard) Derrick Rose. I’d like them to win it,” he predicts. Al Rivett’s column appears every three weeks. E-mail him at arivett@durhamregion. com Public meeting on hospital plan a good thing A jax, Pickering and Whitby resi- dents will have a chance to have their say on Rouge Valley Health System plans to close the mental health department’s in-patient services in Ajax and consolidate it at Centenary Hospital in Scarborough. While we’re pleased this is the case, it’s disappointing that it only came about due to media exposure and public pressure. The Central East Local Health Integra- tion Network, the provincial body Rouge Valley answers to, recently approved the hospital’s plans, including the cutting of up to 220 positions. But, it also forced the hospital to delay the moving of the 20 mental health beds to Scarborough for a month to involve the public. Shortly after the story broke, we received a letter from hospital board chairman Tom Atkins, far too large for the newspaper but posted on our website, chiding us for our March 23 editorial in which we said Mr. Atkins’s December vow to “continue to communicate openly with our staff, our partners and our communities” wasn’t being honoured if these measures were to be taken very soon after approval from the CE LHIN. Mr. Atkins told us a number of people or groups, including the United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge, had been consulted on the hospital plans. Almost immediately, we received a let- ter from Edna Klazek, the local United Way’s chief executive officer, which states, “At the request of Rouge Valley Health System, a member of their Senior Staff did a presentation to our Board at our March 2008 Meeting.... The hospital did not offer any details or seek United Way’s endorsement of its plans, as no decisions had been made at that time. This was not a consultation, but rather a presentation to share information between community partners.” This is self-explanatory. As you can imagine, we’ve recently heard from many Ajax and Pickering residents about the hospital’s situation and plans. The first was from a hospital employee who about a month ago warned us that severe cuts were coming to the hospital. This person said staff did not have any details and rumours were swirling. So, it seems staff haven’t been in the loop. The average resident certainly hasn’t been. Our dictionary defines consult as “1. to ask advice from (someone); confer (with someone). 2. to refer to for information. 3. to have regard for (a person’s feelings, interests, etc.) in making decisions or plans; consider.” Any way you define the word, it doesn’t seem to apply in how the hospital went about this. We’re not suggesting the RVHS should have asked the community what how to deal with the deficit and based its plan on the input. But, it certainly should have been more open, including holding a town hall meeting, at least one, before being compelled to by the CE LHIN. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, April 4, 2008 durhamregion.com Joseph hoping for a little March Madness Al Rivett By Josie Newman jnewman@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A recent notice of re- dundancy to 70 elementary and 18 high school teachers at the Durham Catholic District School Board doesn’t seem to be in line with the decline in teacher- pupil ratio, says the executive assistant of contract services at the Ontario English Catholic Teacher’s Association. “We’re going to ask them what the redundancies are based on. We don’t believe there’s that much of a decline at this moment. The teachers’ contract with OECTA specifies pupil-teacher ra- tios, which are based on the Durham Catholic board’s projections,” said Ed Chudak. Redundancy means a teacher is de- clared surplus based on a school board’s projections of enrolment figures for the following September. A teacher can be redundant for as long as three years and the school board cannot hire anybody new until the redundant teachers are called back. The redundant teachers stay in place until the end of the current school year. “We don’t have an option to wait. At this point, the numbers are based on our enrolment projections for September, which are in serious decline. Our hope is to have all of them back. We often don’t know what families are moving into a neighborhood until June or even September, some teachers leave and go to other boards, and others retire. All of those factors can free up positions,” said DCDSB director Paul Pulla. He said a decline of 1,100 students is projected for the coming school year. Teachers notified of possible layoffs Metroland Durham Region Media Group By Josie Newman jnewman@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A diversity ad- vocate and Oshawa native who started the ReelWorld Film Festi- val says her motivation was rooted in the lack of diversity she saw on television as a child. “When I watched TV as a lit- tle kid, I never saw anyone who looked like me (not white), unless they were natives, servants, or in another demeaning role,” Tonya Lee Williams, a former character on the soap opera The Young and the Restless, told a small crowd at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Tuesday. Her talk was part of UOIT/Dur- ham College’s diversity week, an annual event held shortly after the International Day to Eliminate Racism. The Reel World Film Festival, a series of movies from filmmakers from varying cultures, opens its eighth season at the Carleton Cin- ema in Toronto on April 2 and runs for five days. Ms. Williams said there are 72 different film festivals held in the City of Toronto. “It’s important to hire people of colour for the festival because they don’t get a lot of opportu- nity to work in that genre. I have to work three times as hard to have balanced diversity in the festival; I have to give opportunities to those who aren’t as experienced or trained,” she said. Ms. Williams instructed the crowd to act as gatekeepers. “It’s your responsibility to bring those who are overlooked to the at- tention of those running the show,” she said. “You’re here because you are interested in diversity.” comWHY BEIN G PEANUT FREE IS SO IMPORTAN T Reasons to reconsider 11 07OCT AMETROLAND DURHAM REGION MEDIA GROUP NEWSMAGAZINE www.durhamparent.com SEE LEADERSHIP ON PAGE 7 HELP! MY CHILD’S PROJECT IS DUE! Ways to work with your kids 4 3 SIMPLE STEPS T O TAK E CONTROL Be firm, fair and c onsistent 13 BY DANIELLE HARDER There are many good reasons to try to eat together as a family once a day. It’s a chance to slow down, connect and share everyone’s day. Increasingly, research is also showing family meals are better for children’s physical, emotional and mental health. According to a study published last month, families who eat together may have healthier kids in the long term. The fi ndings, which appear in the Jour- nal of the American Dietetic Association, suggest children who connect with their parents at mealtimes are more likely to have a healthier diet as young adults. The study followed 1,700 teenagers for fi ve years and found those who ate the most meals with their families tended to eat bet- ter as they got older, including eating more fruits and vegetables. This new research bolsters previous studies that found children who share a meal with family several times a week are less likely to smoke, drink alcohol, use drugs or become sexually active. They also tend to do better academically and have better mental health. Unfortunately, while science suggests families make more attempts to eat togeth- er, economic forces are working against them. According to Statistics Canada, workers spend an average of 45 minutes less per day with family members in 2005 than they did 20 years earlier. The length of the workday has also ex- panded, cutting into what was traditionally the family dinnertime. On average, Cana- dians now work about 30 minutes longer each day than they did a generation ago. Exacerbating the meal crunch is simply the fast-paced and full lives of many fami- lies today. Children are often involved in more extra-curricular activities and have more homework to get through each night, than their parents did as kids. So, what to do? Start by doing some ‘investment’ cook- ing: double a meal one night and freeze half for later or set aside one afternoon on the weekend to cook several meals that can be tucked away in the freezer for busy nights. Next, save yourself time by purchasing pre-cut vegetables. Yes, they cost more but you’re more likely to use them and less likely to be pitching out brown broccoli next week. Even onions – the most dreaded of kitchen chores – are available pre- chopped and frozen. A simple meal, such as bean burritos, can be whipped up in under half an hour. The family meal s till matters MAKE IT A TRADITION Sitting down each day for a family meal, whether it be breakfast or dinner, still holds a lot of value and importance for you and your children. Leadership in education What does it mean to be a leader? In today’s world we recognize that a real leader is a person of action and compas- sion, vision and insight, initiative and responsibility. At Trinity College School, the com- munity recently undertook a long-term planning exercise to understand how they can best prepare students to be leaders – leaders in their local and global communities, leaders within the school and, most importantly, leaders within their own lives. As a result of this community-wide planning initiative, Trinity College School has adopted a new mission statement: developing habits of the heart and mind for a life of purpose and service. This statement refl ects their understanding that true success SEE FAMILY MEAL ON PAGE 3 FEATURE BUSINESS ,- )SYOU RCHILDPLAYI NG(OCKEYOR2INGETTETHIS YEAR 2EGISTER.OWFO R & A L L 0 R O G R A MS 6OTED3KATING)NSTRUCTIONIN$URHAM 2EGISTRATIONDATESARENOWONLINEORREGISTERANY TIMEBYPHONE 0ICKERING "AYLY3T0ICKERING/. Based on feedback received, that route was confirmed as the Preferred Sewer Route (see map). The preferred route begins just north of Box Grove in the Town of Markham and follows along 14th Avenue to Townline Road to the Hydro corridor, travelling east along the Hydro corridor to Liverpool Road. The route proceeds south on Liverpool Road to Finch Avenue, continuing east on Finch Avenue and ending at Valley Farm Road in the City of Pickering. Essentially all of the proposed sewer will be constructed by tunnel method, which creates little or no disturbance to the surface except at tunnel entry and exit shafts at planned intervals. PIFs are being held to allow interested persons to comment on the following project activities: • Detailed assessments of the potential effects on the environment associated with construction and operation of the proposed sewer • Recommended mitigation measures for minimizing potential effects • Recommended environmental monitoring plans for use during the construction and operation of the proposed sewer • Recommended ecological, recreational, and infrastructure enhancements for the area The existing Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer is an integral component of the York Durham Sewage System (YDSS). The Regional Municipalities of York and Durham are undertaking the Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer IEA to address the additional sanitary sewer flows projected from future growth as allowed for in York Region’s Official Plan. The Regions are co-proponent on the IEA, as a portion of the study area is within Durham Region and they co-own the existing Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer within Durham Region. Comments and information regarding this IEA are being received from the public to assist York and Durham Regions in meeting the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. This material will be maintained on file for use during the project, and may be included in project documentation. Comments and information received will be used in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Your participation is an important part of the process and we welcome your input. We encourage you to attend either one of the PIFs to review the materials available and provide any comment or information that you have with regard to the project. A copy of the Synopsis Report #4 on the impact assessments associated with the proposed sewer, as well as other background information, is available on the project website: http://sec.cenet.ca. Copies of this information are also available for review at the Pickering Central Library, Malvern District Library, and Unionville Library, as well as York and Durham Regions’ Headquarters. Additional information on this IEA can also be obtained by contacting one of the project team members listed below. The money was announced in last week’s provincial budget. Although the time table for the funding has not been released yet, Durham Region Transit (DRT) general manager Ted Galinis said the first stages of the project could kick in three years from now. It’s estimated the project would be complete in five years. “This is really good news for Durham,” said Mr. Galinis. “This is the first time we’ve had a significant amount of money come our way.” An example of an existing BRT system is York Region’s VIVA. BRT service would replace local GO bus service along Hwy. 2, though express and semi-express routes would remain. The goal is to have DRT buses running every seven-and-a-half minutes during peak times and every 15 minutes at other times. “Hwy. 2 is our main corridor in Dur- ham Region. All the lakeshore commu- nities are connected along it,” said Mr. Galinis. The project comes with a $175 million capital cost, with the announced provincial dollars paying for the first phase of it. Ms. Mees, a dental hygiene stu- dent who graduates in April from Durham College, has seen approxi- mately 30 clients during the past year. She’s one of 48 students who work on customers’ teeth on a daily basis at the new Durham College dental clinic. “I had no idea this clinic even existed until I met Tracy. It doesn’t take that much longer here and it’s cheaper. I’m a hairdresser so we don’t get insurance. I’m a single mom, so it’s really expensive to get dental work done,” says Ms. Evelyn, as she leaned back in her chair and opened her mouth wide. She’s not alone in being unaware of a less expensive alternative to a dentist visit, according to Donna Pegg, a faculty member at the school and a registered dental hygienist. “Most of the clients we have are repeat customers and heard about us originally through the students,” says Ms. Pegg. Although the clinic started in 1977, its capacity doubled in 2005, when the new clinic opened. There are 24 work stations, allowing half the hygiene students to do practical work at the same time. First-year students in first semes- ter can only work on dental pucks, sets of teeth attached to the headrest of a chair. They then move on to live subjects and, by second year, each student sees at least 30 clients per year, says Ms. Pegg. The high-tech clinic cost approxi- mately $1 million. Each work sta- tion is equipped with knee-oper- ated faucets to prevent germs from spreading and a television screen that plays CDs of procedures stu- dents are learning. A sterilization room and two X-ray machines com- plete the equipment roster. While students are working on cli- ents, they are assisted and overseen by four registered dental hygienists and a dentist. The dentist changes daily and is part of a pool of local professionals, says Ms. Pegg. Once the students are registered hygienists -- a process that involves taking a board exam one month after graduation -- they can do as- sessments of the mouth and gums, fluoride treatments, pit and fissure sealants, X-rays, and client-specific oral treatment without a dentist’s approval. The Province last year gave den- tal hygienists more autonomy and authority by amending the Den- tal Hygiene Act of 1991. Authorized dental hygienists, following a com- prehensive assessment, can now proceed with scaling, root cleaning, and curettage without the order of a dentist. This means under-served communities, like seniors’ homes, can now get desperately needed basic dental work, said Ms. Pegg. ”I’m enjoying the program, es- pecially the hands-on experience,” says Maarika Lepik, a second-year student. “I’m excited about learning in the new facility and on state-of- the-art equipment. It’s nice to have the opportunity to interact with the clientele who come in. I’ve worked on kids as young as five to seniors in their 80s. Many of the clientele are from Oshawa, Ajax, Brooklin, and Pickering.” She took a general arts and sci- ences program at the college, gradu- ated in 2003, and then worked as a dental receptionist and assistant for two years before applying to the dental hygiene program. The clinic is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, as well as Tuesday and Thursday evenings. For more information or to book an appointment, call 905-721-3074. This Canadian play, by George F. Walker, pits a younger, re- bellious generation against an older, traditional generation, a theme as old as humanity itself. Nothing Sacred, which won the Chalmers Award and the Gover- nor General’s Literary Award for drama in 1988, is a retooling of the Russian novel, Fathers and Son, by Turgenev. In keeping with the theme of change, the Canadian playwright has altered some things, turning it into a Canadian comedy, rather than a Russian tragedy. “It’s thoughtful comedy for sure,” said director Murray Twist of the play, which opened April 4 and runs until April 12 at the Arts Resource Centre in down- town Oshawa. “The tone of it is more mod- ern and more comic than the original. He’s taken some liber- ties with the plot. It’s a clash of generations, a clash of values. It’s got a very ‘60s feel to it, the clash of generations.” Turgenev’s novel was set in a time when Russian laws granted some freedom to feudal serfs. Their transition from serf to ten- ants shook all levels of society. In the play, the younger genera- tion thinks the old generation is past its due date and should be thrown out. “The new world character is a university graduate (Arkady) who comes home and brings his brilliant, nihilistic friend (Ba- zarov). Bazarov is essentially a terrorist,” Twist said. He’s the centre of a group which includes Arkady, who has invited the group to his family home, a farm. “Arkady’s torn by the conflict of worlds, by his love for his fam- ily, the old way of life versus the new way,” Twist said. “The real clash in the play is between Bazarov and Pavel (Arkady’s aristocratic uncle), be- cause he represents the aristo- cratic part. He travels throughout Europe and wasted many years chasing an unattainable woman.” Other characters in the 11- member cast include Kirsanov, Arkady’s father who’s trying to bring modern techniques to a badly-managed farm, Fenichka, the young housekeeper who has born Kirsanov’s child, Anna, a friend/lover of Bazarov, and a group of servants. Twist said the four servants are the clowns in the play, mean- ing the comic vein is never far from the surface. “It’s very Shakespearean in that sense.” The majority of the cast is young. Twist described the cast as “fun, talented and smart.” Cast members are Darren Brunke, of Oshawa, as Bazarov, Kyle Robertson, of Pickering, as Arkady, Drummond White, of Whitby, as Kirsanov, Chris Fran- com, of Whitby, as Pavel, Holly Bunting, of Pickering, as Fenich- ka, Andra Kelly, of Oshawa, as Anna, Mark Kalzer, of Ajax, as Sit- nikov, a college friend of Arkady, Robert Bennett, of Oshawa, as Piotr, a servant, Shawn Mears, of Whitby, as Gregor, a young serf, Rick Bunting, of Courtice, as the bailiff of the estate, and Darryl Peters, of Whitby, as Sergei, an- other serf. You can see them in action April 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12 at the Arts Resource Centre, 72 Queen St. Tickets are $10 and available at the United Way Information Ser- vices kiosk in the Oshawa Centre or at www.durhamshoestring. org. St. Mary artist mixes it up Under the Wire features Pickering students Rachel Calvelli Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING — Student artist Emma Allain’s passion and dedi- cation is clear in her Under the Wire art show pieces. The event runs to April 24 at Pickering City Hall, where art lovers can see work by St. Mary Catholic Secondary School stu- dents Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Allain has six pieces in the Grade 12 show: two mixed media paintings, a digital print poster set, another poster, an editorial and a triptych painting on can- vas. She explains the significance of the show and its theme from the Grade 12’s perspectives. “There’s no real theme, but the name Under the Wire is a re- flection (and actually somewhat of an inside joke) based on the amount of pressure we’ve all been faced with this year,” she says. The seniors at the school have all been feeling the pressure with universities, scholarships, school work and now the art show. “We’ve had a tough year, so this is kind of our way of showing off all our hard work,” Allain explains. Her art focuses mainly on self- expression through multimedia work and is strongly influenced by literature. Two of her pieces are per- sonal reflections on her favou- rite novels, ‘The Five People You Meet in Heaven’ by Mitch Albom, and ‘Everything is Illumi- nated’ by Jonathan Safran Foer. “My favourite piece is my ‘The Five People You Meet in Heaven’ piece,” Allain says. “It’s less self-centered than the rest... it’s quite basically about life, and how I see it. It’s a lot less complicated in thought than the others yet the aesthetics are more detailed.” Allain is inspired by everything around her. The way she reacts to situations, how she connects to things, and her mother are her other major inspirations. One of her teachers, Jennifer O’Leary, has been a constant supporter. “My mom inspires me - she was the first to do so, she start- ed my passion for art - and Ms. O’Leary has helped me grow as an artist more than I can say,” she explains. Allain hopes to attend York University or the Ontario Col- lege of Art & Design for graphic design next year. Painting will always remain her passion, but she “isn’t too keen on the starving artist scene” as she says. She also plans to work at a magazine or newspaper in edito- rial design in the future. The 18-year-old sniper, who’s set to join the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s basketball team on a scholarship in the fall, is the lone Cana- dian on the 11-member world team. Talented Pickering guard to play for world team at Nike Hoop Summit By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com AJAX — First, Devoe Joseph left his mark on Ontario high school basketball, and now the world. The 6-foot, 3-inch shooting guard, who led the Pickering High School Trojans to their second consecutive provincial ‘AAAA’ basketball title last month, is headed stateside later this month for the prestigious 11th annual Nike Hoop Summit. Hosted in Portland, Oregon, at the Rose Garden arena on Satur- day, April 12, the Summit features America’s top senior high school players taking on a World Select Team comprised of the world’s top under-19 players, including Joseph, the lone Canadian on the world squad. Although Joseph, who’ll join the University of Minnesota on a bas- ketball scholarship in the fall, was chosen to the 11-member world squad for the Hoop Summit game more than a month ago, he’s still in awe of his selection. “It’s unbelievable. It’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” says the 18-year-old Pickering res- ident. “As a kid, I dreamed about making the pros and this is a very good stepping stone.” Although the world team hasn’t posted many wins in the past 10 years of the Hoop Summit, win- ning just twice in those years, that dynamic may change this year with not only Joseph’s selec- tion, but also two seven-footers -- Alexis Ajinca, a 7-foot, 1-inch centre from France, and 7-foot, 4- inch Boban Marjanovic of Serbia -- who will be part of the world team’s arsenal. Joseph is one of four guards named to the world team. Joseph says he’ll join his world teammates in Oregon about a week before the game, where they will practice under head coach Rob Beveridge, a long-time Aus- tralian national basketball coach. The actual Hoop Summit game will be played on the home court of the National Basketball League’s Portland Trailblazers. The talented shooter, whose last-second shot lifted the Tro- jans past the Eastern Commerce Saints at last month’s OFSAA high school championships, was part of the 2008 All-Canada Basketball Weekend at Ryerson University in Toronto last weekend. He was joined on Team Black by Pine Ridge guard Kurt Alexander. His brother, Corey, played on Team White, along with other Pickering High teammates Dwayne Smith and Justin Wiltshire. “It was an amazing experience,” says Joseph of the basketball weekend. “I seen a lot of guys that I played with before. The Spartans are carrying the No. 1 seed into the 20-team Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associa- tions (OFSAA) Championships, which got underway Wednesday and contin- ues through until Saturday. Dunbarton dropped their second game of the tournament to the 11th- seeded St. Michael’s College Double Blues of Toronto 3-0. St. Mike’s scored twice in the first period and struck for another in the second to blank the usually high-flying Spartans, missing several key players due to commit- ments at the all-Ontario midget ‘AAA’ playdowns in Ottawa. The Spartans continued round- robin play Thursday against 20th- seeded Fellowes of Pembroke and against sixth-seeded Forest Heights of Kitchener. Both games occurred after press time. Dunbarton got off to a solid start to OFSAA play on Wednesday morn- ing, downing No. 16 St. Matthew of Orleans, Ontario 6-4. Dunbarton led 3-1 after the first period and then scored the lone goal of the middle frame to take a comfort- able 4-1 cushion into the final period. Colin Campbell led the way with a three point effort, scoring twice and adding an assist. Other goal scorers were Chris Wright, Andrew Rhodes, Brad McAllister and Ryan Lee. Other assists went to Wright with two, McAl- lister, Mike Marshall and Alex Fortin. The Knights outlasted the Windsor Junior Spitfires in the best-of-five OMHA final series, winning an excit- ing fifth game 6-4 before a capacity crowd at the Ajax Community Cen- tre. Both Ajax and Windsor will now compete and represent the OMHA in the Ontario Hockey Federation Championships in Leaside from April 11 to 13. The Knights thought they were on the scoreboard early in Game 5 but, after consultation among the officials, the goal was called back. Windsor quickly replied with a goal of their own to take a 1-0 lead. Ajax would respond minutes later to tie the game. The teams engaged in tremendous back-and-forth action through the remainder of the first period and the entire second period, with Ajax taking a 4-3 lead into the dressing room. Knowing that Windsor possessed the talent to come back, the Knights went on the attack in the third and took a commanding 6-3 lead and proceeded to shut down a deter- mined Spitfires club for the OMHA title. Shaun Adams led the way for Ajax w ith four goals. Defensively, the Knights were solid and showed their depth as two key players, Greg Ley- den serving a suspension and Josh Marchand injured early in the game, were unavailable. Game 5 became necessary after Ajax won Game 4 by a 3-1 score in Windsor last week. Goaltender Christian Gaudette backstopped the Knights to the criti- cal victory and force Game 5 back on home ice. In game 1 of the series, Ajax cruised to a 6-2 win but Windsor rebounded in Game 2 to score a 3-2 victory over the Knights. The road trip to Windsor for Game 3 obviously impacted Ajax as they fell behind early 2-0 and eventually lost the game 5-4 with Windsor scor- ing the winning goal with only 45 seconds left in regulation time. Team members are Colin Shortt, Alex Rombis, Andrew Sartain, Der- rick Gray, Robert Nash, Kevin Watts, Kyle Neadles, Matt Shortell, March- and, Daniel Tremblay, Tim Cooper, Leyden, Jonathon Blaha, Adams, Tyler Ritchie, Mitch Earle, Matt Hen- nesey, Ryan Lane, Joshua Pritchard, Gaudette and Tommy Faux. Tony O’Brien coaches the team, assisted by Steve McDonald and Wayne McDonald. The head trainer is Jacques Tremblay, assisted by Bob Hennessey. The manager is Donna Pritchard. He’ll attend tryouts in Canada on June 6. If he’s successful, he’ll join the team for a tournament in Germany, followed by the 2008 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tourna- ment in Greece from July 14 to 20. Joseph says the Canadian coaches, in- cluding head coach Leo Rautins, are look- ing for him to make his mark on the senior national team as a point guard, converting him from his natural shooting guard posi- tion. “They want me to be more of a point guard, so I’ll have to go there and play hard and play strong,” he says. He admits playing as a point guard is definitely a role he’ll play when he joins the Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s basket- ball team under head coach Tubby Smith in the fall. “Being only 6-foot, 3-inches, I have to be more of a point guard and develop my skills. It’s better for me at the next level,” he explains. “I expect to play hard wherever they play me -- at the point or shooting guard, it doesn’t really matter.” Joseph on world team at Hoop Summit ✦ Joseph from page 19 Bill Manos the man for Michael’s with 16-point effort AJAX — Michael’s Eatery won a hard- fought victory over Dickson Printing 50-44 in the opening round of playoff action on Wednesday, March 26.
