HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2008_01_11PICKERING — One person has been charged as an accomplice while another is being sought in an unusual robbery at a Pickering eatery. Durham police said a suspect dove through a drive-thru window to gain access to the Kingston Road Burger King restaurant after the shop had locked its doors around 11 p.m. Jan. 2. The knife-wielding bandit, who wore a mask, bound two employees with duct tape and left them in a staff room before fleeing with cash, police said. Robbery detectives have since charged a restaurant employee. Vic Boodoo, 18, of Downs Cres- cent in Ajax is charged with rob- bery, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, public mis- chief and failing to comply with probation. Investigators still seek the masked robber, described as a black man in his early 20s. 980 KINGSTON ROAD, PICKERING Between Liverpool Rd & Whites Rd. 905-839-6159 www.saturnofpickering.saturncanada.com Saturn Saab of Pickering Prices in effect at press time & are plus lic., taxes, freight & admin fee. 2007 AURA From $24,990 Only 4 “Car of the Year” Auras left! Scarborough resident Brian Mi- chael Shepherd, 15, was leaving Next Paintball in Pickering when he suddenly collapsed. People in attendance told the News Adver- tiser as someone called 911, others ran to the nearby EMS station for help. But, since paramedics were at another call at that moment with the equipment, a paramedic from the station ran to the scene and was unable to perform resuscitation. Durham Region Health Depart- ment spokeswoman Glendene Col- lins said the call was made at 7:23 p.m. and an EMS vehicle arrived on the scene at 7:30 p.m. Brian’s father, Jim Shepherd, in- dicated it wasn’t playing paintball that killed his son. He said he died a “natural death,” but wouldn’t elab- orate. Mr. Armstrong said the investigation won’t be complete for a couple of weeks. Steve Mc- Nenly, assistant director of Durham Region EMS, will conduct the investigation. Ms. Collins said no formal complaint has been made. Pickering Fire Services also re- sponded, but on arrival, the crew was in- formed the patient was “vital signs absent. “So, according to our protocol, we assisted with the ambulance, we assisted with CPR, first aid, and we also hooked up our automat- ic external defibrillator,” said Deputy Chief Simon Almond. “Unfortunately our efforts were unsuccess- ful on the scene and the patient was trans- ported to hospital.” Officials at Next Paintball said there is no reason to believe the incident was directly related to paintball, and as far as they were concerned, the paramedics did everything properly. Visitations will be held at Pine Hills Visitation Chapel and Reception Centre, 625 Birchmount Rd., Scarborough, on Friday, Jan, 11 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday, Jan. 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The funer- al service will be in the chapel at 2 p.m., and the burial will follow at Pine Hills Cemetery. Replaced quickly by hospital staff By Melissa Mancini mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Signed pictures of some Toronto sports stars that were supposed to bring holiday cheer to a local boy at Sick Kids Hospital went missing just hours after they were presented to him. Fifteen-year-old Michael Box has been at the Hospital for Sick Children since early December after sustaining a devas- tating spinal cord injury while he com- peted in a high school wrestling match. The teen is still fighting every day and has survived two heart failures in the past week and multiple seizures, the most re- cent of which lasted 15 minutes. So it was a treat when a couple of players from the Toronto Maple Leafs came by the hospital and visited with Michael, leaving behind some autographed pictures. Mr. Box said he attached the photos to the wall so Michael could see them after the visit. The next morning, the photos were gone. A hospital spokeswoman said they don’t know what happened to the photos but they were replaced as soon as staff knew about the situation. Mr. Box said the family was upset and that it was “unfortunate that the pictures went missing.” The Box family is currently looking to- ward future plans with Michael and is trying to raise money for a suitable wheel- chair for the young man. Mr. Box said the model Michael needs is going to cost upwards of $16,000. So far the family has received $2,500 in dona- tions in Michael’s trust fund and about $2,344 from the Polar Bear dip in Lake On- tario that took place in Ajax on New Year’s Day. There is a trust fund set up in Michael’s name at the Bank of Montreal with the ac- count number 39412-001-8116279. Michael Box was injured during an Ajax wres- tling meet. Memorabilia left for him by mem- ber of the Toronto Maple Leafs were stolen from his hospital room. The issue now goes to Regional Council, which will look at approving the site on Jan. 23. Opponents to incin- eration spent the morn- ing presenting arguments against the location. They ranged from speeches based on sci- ence to those based on raw emotion. “My kids and my grand- kids, their lives are in the balance, please make the right decision,” said Ux- bridge resident June Da- vies, with tears in her eyes. Three of the places on the shortlist are in Clar- ington, the fourth is in East Gwillimbury in York Region, which is a 12 per cent partner in the proj- ect. The preferred spot en- dorsed by the committee is in Clarington’s Energy Park on lands owned by Durham south of Hwy. 401, near Courtice Road. In the end, Councillor Brian Nicholson of Osha- wa was the only commit- tee member against the location. “It was wrong in the be- ginning, it’s wrong now,” said Coun. Nicholson, be- fore the motion passed. “Stop the process; do what’s right, not what’s ex- pedient.” Regional Chairman Roger Anderson defended energy-from-waste tech- nology. “It’s not 100 per cent clean, we know that,” he said, but added he’s pre- pared to take anyone up to the Region’s Brock land- fill to show that landfilling isn’t clean either. “If we build this, it will be state of the art, it will be better than anything that’s out there today,” said Mr. Anderson. He also said every per- son who has asked for the opportunity to speak on the issue has been allowed to do so. “I’m tired of people say- ing we’re hiding. I’m tired of suggestions by mem- bers of council that our staff are pulling a sham,” said Mr. Anderson. After the site was en- dorsed, Clarington Mayor Jim Abernethy said the full health, environmental and financial implications can’t be fully examined until a site and a tech- nology are chosen by the Region which must sub- mit a preferred site to the Province as part of the Individual Environmental Assessment. “The next 11 months are the most important be- cause the questions every- one’s been asking will get answered,” he said, adding he wants to see the pro- cess continue. Mayor Abernethy said the Region’s waste prob- lem is not going to go away, as even with increased di- version there would still be 25 to 30 per cent of waste that must be dealt with somehow. He also said councils cannot accept the “not in my backyard” argument. “If it’s not safe for your backyard, it’s not safe for someone else in their backyard,” said Mayor Ab- ernethy. The committee also ap- proved a short list of five pre-qualified vendors of thermal waste treatment technology. Four of the vendors pro- posed incinerators, while one proposed a combined mass burn and gasifica- tion facility. NO DIPLOMA? The English under-14 national team travelled to Canada over the Christmas break to participate in a big Oakville tournament, as well as to play exhibi- tion games against GTA bantam teams, including ones in Durham Region. They won some and lost some, con- cluding their 12-game playing tour with a 5-7 mark against ‘AA’ and ‘A’ teams, some major bantam, some minor bantam. And, with only one notable exception (a 12-1 loss to an Oshawa major bantam rep team), they were never embarrassed. The English team’s lone regret, says David Garrity, one of the parents who made the trip to Canada, was not drop- ping into the minor bantam category for the annual Richard Bell Memorial Inter- national Minor Hockey Tournament 2007 in Oakville. Competing in the major bantam ‘AA’ division, the Brits earned one win (5-0 over the Toronto Ice Dogs) in four games in Oakville. “The step up to play major bantam was a big mistake; what a difference a year makes,” says Garrity. Four of the English team’s games were played in Durham Region, including stops in Ajax and Pickering, where they were winners on both counts. On Dec. 30, the English team defeated the Ajax Knights ‘AA’ bantams 5-1 and, on Jan. 3, played the Pickering Panthers ban- tam ‘A’ team, where they pocketed a close 5-4 win. Greg Murphy, coach of the Ajax Knights bantam ‘AA’ squad, says the English national squad was up for the game, and it showed as they skated to victory against an Ajax team that’s currently in the top of its league standings. “They were excited to play us and they had a great game. It was well-deserved,” says Murphy of the exhibition contest played before a packed Ajax Community Centre. Murphy also pointed out the English didn’t shy away from the physical play against Ajax, trading checks with their hosts during the game. “They had a couple of big boys and they were hitting and hitting well. I think they enjoyed the North American game,” explained Murphy. Aside from the game, there was plenty of goodwill to go around, as the Ajax hosts treated their English guests to din- ner, exchanged old jerseys and plenty of friendships were forged. “Their players and our players had a great time together; it was more than just about hockey,” he says. Garrity notes the players, to a person, were saddened at tour’s end. “All our players had a great time and did not want to go home. Our Canadian hosts were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble,” he noted. Al Rivett’s column appears every third Fri- day. E-mail arivett@durhamregion.com. Aggressive RIDE patrols help fight impaired driving T he final numbers are in for Festive RIDE 2007 and they don’t paint a pretty picture: despite fewer stops on the streets of Durham Region, more drunk driving arrests were made this year than last. The annual seven-week program, which runs from late November until early January, saw 113 drivers hit with impaired driving charges, topping the 101 who were arrested the previous year. And com- parisons are an obvious cause for concern: Durham RIDE officers stopped 13,000 vehicles while York police stopped 51,000 and arrested 29. In Toronto, the totals were 101,000 stops and 68 charges. While comparisons, on the face of it, sug- gest drinking and driving is rampant and out of control in Durham compared to neighbouring GTA regions, further inves- tigation reveals Durham’s units were far more aggressive in nabbing drunk motor- ists. Which is the way RIDE should be. If the goal is to stop drunk driving, setting up patrols in obvious and easily avoidable places is not the best way to eradicate the behaviour. This year, under the supervision of Detec- tive-Constable Dave Ashfield, Durham RIDE officers would set up a line at one or two locations early in the evening. But once the early morning hours hit, RIDE officers hit the back streets and side roads in a bid to catch those drunk drivers who may have sidestepped a flashing RIDE patrol. The reasoning was simple: “We know that people are trying to avoid us. We know that people are driving on the back roads and we know that people aren’t getting the mes- sage,” said Det.-Const. Ashfield. So what’s the key in the fight against drunk driving? Year-round RIDE patrols, especially the type that ran in Durham this year, would be a great start. Those who repeatedly drink and drive would face a far greater chance of getting caught and being taken off the road. Publicity about the effectiveness of RIDE also can’t hurt. The more who know about the work done by Durham’s units, the bet- ter. And ultimately, education and enforce- ment are key. The work of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is a godsend in getting the message out about the tragic consequences of impaired driving. And stepped up penal- ties which make drunk driving so onerous on one’s life and career are a necessary part of the process as well. Thank- fully, his condition was not serious how- ever this visit to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering was another reminder to me of what this hospital means to me. As always, the emergency department was full. Adding to the already swelling crowd was the arrival of three ambu- lances. The nurses, doctors and techni- cians we met with - starting with the triage nurse right up to the pediatrician (Dr. Aref) were wonderful. Being in a hospital surrounded by strangers would be daunting for any- one - let alone a 17-month-old baby. Everyone was so kind and friendly, and having worked in a busy and physically and mentally demanding environment, I understand that this is not always an easy feat. I have lived in Pickering for more than 28 years. I have seen the Ajax/Pickering community go through a lot of changes, so it’s exciting to see the small commu- nity hospital I grew up with is finally get- ting the redevelopment and revitaliza- tion that it so badly needs and deserves. At the end of November, the provincial government announced it would phase in full-day kindergarten, for children aged four and five, starting in 2010. So far it’s unclear whether that means senior kindergarten only or junior kindergarten as well. A plan to implement the change is forthcoming. “Generally we see this as a positive,” says Mark Joel, operations and transporta- tion superintendent for the public school board. “It’s a positive announcement for children at risk, it’s a posi- tive announcement for Best Start programs, it’s a posi- tive announcement for par- ents with day-care issues.” Paul Pulla, director of ed- ucation for Durham’s Cath- olic school board, echoes Mr. Joel’s words. “I think programs that enhance the early educa- tion of children are proven to have an impact on how they do in school overall and how they succeed in the long term.” Luigia Ayotte, programs superintendent for the pub- lic board, says full-day kin- dergarten will allow teach- ers to spend more time on key skills like literacy and numeracy. “What you’re able to do is spend more time building those foundations, so by the time they get to Grade 1, they’re ready.” Currently, the public board has about 220 kinder- garten classes. Mr. Joel says if those numbers were dou- bled, many of the board’s schools could accommo- date additional classes, in- cluding most of the schools south of Taunton Road and in the north in Scugog, Ux- bridge and Brock. “There’s probably 100 schools right now where there’s space. We’re into a period of declining popula- tion,” he says. But there are areas of growth, in Whitby and Ajax especially, where it may be a tight squeeze. Brooklin Village Public School, for example, has 11 kindergar- ten classes. The Catholic board is in a similar position. But Mr. Pulla points out that even in schools that are under-utilized, there would be costs associated with converting regular class- rooms into kindergarten classrooms. They need to have washroom facilities in them or near them, as well as different furniture, toys and other teaching tools. Mr. Joel estimates startup costs per classroom would be between $8,000 and $10,000. For the schools that will require additional classrooms, there are ques- tions regarding funding. The government has al- lotted $200 million for 2010 and $300 million for 2011 for full-day kindergarten, but so far there’s no break down on how that money will be spent. Mr. Pulla says full-day kindergarten would not have a significant impact on the accommodation review currently being conducted in Oshawa. “Because of the demo- graphics of some of those areas, the kindergarten reg- istrations aren’t coming into those schools.” Denise Gilbert is the ex- ecutive director for School- house Playcare, a network of 20 day-care centres located in Durham public schools. She’s worried that all-day kindergarten would dam- age the viability of the cen- tres. Kindergarten students currently fill up the centre during the day, with morn- ing students balancing af- ternoon students. Overall, she says she’s an advocate for early child- hood education and fund- ing for it. 70%ff WOMEN’S regular-priced: Fall & winter • Fashions by LIZ CLAIBORNE & BANDOLINO • Outerwear by FENNELLI • Cashmere sweaters by JONES NEW YORK Luxe 40%ff Women’s NATURALLY ORGANIC WORLD athleisurewear Buy one Get one FREE ALL PILLOWS BY LAURA ASHLEY, HEALTHY LIVING, WAMSUTTA Hotel, NAUTICA, FIELDCREST LUXURY & SEALY Free item must be of equal or lesser value. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, January 11, 2008 PAGE 7 A/Pdurhamregion.com DURHAM — Local par- ents are giving the Prov- ince’s plan for full-day kin- dergarten mixed reviews. Ajax resident Mary Geri- dis-Pollard thinks the change is a good idea. As a teacher, she sees the issue from the perspective of an educator and a parent. “I agree with it, it’s some- thing that could be and will be beneficial for students and teachers,” she says. She has a two-and-a-half- year-old daughter who will be entering senior kinder- garten in 2010. Ms. Geri- dis-Pollard would like to see her in an all-day pro- gram and thinks she would be ready for it. “As a parent with day-care issues, I think full-day kindergarten would be more consistent for the parent, for the teacher and for the child.” She thinks it would give children more learning op- portunities and a chance to explore topics in depth. “I think they’ll be better accustomed to the routines when they reach Grade 1,” she says. Her sister-in-law, Aman- da Westwood, doesn’t think full-day kindergarten is necessary. She has a four- and-a-half-year-old daugh- ter who attends Monsignor Philip Coffey in Oshawa. Ms. Westwood says when she enrolled her daughter in junior kindergarten last Jan- uary, she looked for a half- day program as opposed to alternating full days. “Our preference is to keep it the same, every day half days.” Ms. Westwood, a nurse, says she understands that for some it’s a day-care issue, but she and her hus- band have worked it out so there’s always someone home with the kids. She also has a six-month- old daughter who will be kindergarten age by the time the Province imple- ments the plan. The gov- ernment has said full-day kindergarten will be op- tional and Ms. Westwood said she’d prefer to keep her children in half days. “I find for the most part, for four- year-olds and three-and-a- half year olds, I think that’s way too long. Especially for kids who haven’t been to pre-school.” Full-day kindergarten welcomed by Durham educators Parents weigh in on full-day benefits ‘I think they’ll be better accustomed to the rou- tines when they reach Grade 1.’ MARY GERIDIS-POLLARD DURHAM — Software which links directly from the Ministry of Education to the classroom is now teaching Durham Region’s students computer-aided design, global positioning systems (GPS), and tutorials for all subjects in- cluding reading, an education officer said at Monday’s Durham District School Board meeting. “There’s a switch in how we share information literacy. We used to have to wait for CDs to be shipped to us in order for students to use these programs, but now they can just download the same software on-line. It’s so much faster,” said Andrew Harris. The Ministry of Education is trying to get all the province’s school boards to adopt standard- ized templates so staff and parents can find their way around websites and other on-line materials, he said. Pickering Trustee Sherry Cro- teau questioned the availability of the new programs for all stu- dents because the current ratio of students to computers is approxi- mately five-to-one in elementary schools. Ed Hodgins, superintendent of business, said although the ratio is listed as seven-to-one for high school students, it’s actually four- to-one in practice. He said the replacement cycle for desktop computers in schools is every five years, and Mr. Harris said some of the board’s comput- ers are getting to the point where they need to be replaced. Teachers can benefit from the programs, too, which include re- port card support and the Ontario educational resource bank. DURHAM — The Durham Regional Police website remained inaccessible until Tuesday afternoon, almost five days after it was breached by mischie- vous hackers. Police spokesman Dave Selby said the delay in relaunching was necessary as technicians took steps to prevent more assaults on the site, which has been hacked twice since last May. “We could have put it up immediate- ly after it got knocked down but then you’re not doing anything to prevent it from happening again,” he said. The site, drps.ca, was invaded late Thursday by hackers who posted a taunting note. The site was hacked sev- eral months earlier by someone who posted a picture of an animal’s eyes and some words. Mr. Selby said the public access site is a “storefront” service providing in- formation on incidents and events, as well as services provided by Durham police. The site contains no sensitive in- formation related to police reports or other records, he said. The decision to hold a meeting in Newmarket at which Courtice was named the preferred site for a proposed incinerator was roundly criticized by residents who made the trek to York Region to com- ment on the proposal Tuesday. But, both Durham chairman Roger Anderson and York chair- man Bill Fisch defended the meet- ing locale, saying the plan all along had been to alternate meetings between Durham and York. For many, that explanation sim- ply wasn’t good enough. “The very fact it’s being held here in York ... illustrates how the proponents (of the incinerator) continue to deny the most impact- ed communities reasonable access at key points” in the process, said Clarington resident Linda Gasser. It’s not the first time that’s hap- pened, she said, pointing to the announcement of the short list of preferred sites -- four were in Clar- ington and only one in York Region -- was also held in Newmarket. Another opponent to the incin- erator took it a step further. “If you were fair, if you weren’t ashamed, if you weren’t guilty ... about dumping this (incinerator) on that community, you would have held (the meeting) in that community,” said Dr. Paul Con- nett, a retired chemistry professor from St. Lawrence College in Can- ton, NY, and a long-time opponent of incineration. But while he recognized the dis- tance Durham residents had to travel to comment Tuesday, Mr. Anderson said it was simply a mat- ter of process. Though York has reduced its commitment to both paying for the incinerator and providing trash to fuel it to about 12 per cent, from the 50-50 partnership the two regions originally had, the two regions remain joint partners in the $9-million Environmental Assessment process. “The terms of reference of this committee ... dictated alternate meetings because we’re partners 50-50 in this process and York is paying 50 per cent of this bill, as are Durham residents,” said Mr. Anderson. But now that the committee has recommended the preferred site be in Courtice, near Courtice Road and Hwy. 401, Mr. Anderson asked that the committee’s remain- ing meetings be held in Durham. To some extent, York’s chairman agreed. “I’m prepared to say we can have most (of the remaining meet- ings) in Durham ... maybe of the next four or five, we could have one” in York, said Mr. Fisch. Still, he said, “it is clear at this point in time that most of the meetings should be held in Clar- ington.” DURHAMíS BEST DEAL!!! 11 To Choose! The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commis- sion has asked Environment Minister John Baird to refer the Environmental Assessment of the project to a review panel, as opposed to sending it through the comprehensive study process. If the recommendation is accepted, it means foregoing public hearings to decide the type of environmental assessment it should undergo. But it means increasing the amount of input during the actual EA, said a spokesman for the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA). The review panel “enables the public to participate more importantly,” said CEAA spokesman Nicholas Girard. According to the CEAA website, “a review panel is a group of experts selected on the basis of their knowledge and expertise and appointed by the Minister of the Environ- ment. The Minister also appoints one of the panel members as chairperson.” OPG had requested the move to a review panel, given the level of public interest in the project. “The Commission further considered that public interest groups have requested re- view panels for other nuclear projects in the past, based on their level of concerns with the proposals,” read the Record of Proceed- ings from a December hearing between the CNSC and OPG. As well, “... the Commission anticipates that public interest groups may have significant concerns with the proposal to construct and operate another NGS (nu- clear generating station) in Canada.” Nominations are being accepted until March 3. 2008 for the Durham Environmental Advisory Committee (DEAC) Environmental Achievement Awards. These awards recognize efforts to promote, preserve and enhance Durham’s environment. The six award categories are: George A. Scott Stewardship Award: for the maintenance, protection, or preservation of the natural environment. Dr. J. Murray Speirs Restoration Award: for the restoration of the natural environment. Irene Kock Education/Communication Award: for effective communication, sharing knowledge, or exhibiting leadership in helping others learn about the environment. Eric Krause Innovative Plans/Policies/Initiatives Award: for innovative efforts to encourage positive change with respect to the environment. Jessica Markland Partnerships Award: for cooperative efforts to enhance the environment involving public, community and private interests. Evylin Stroud Lifetime Achievement Award: for the continued promotion of the protection of the environment, through small, but meaningful ways. Speaking of Fabric ties into Tate’s interest in drawing and painting fabric, originally moti- vated by her career in dance. The exhibit runs to Jan. 31, with an opening reception Jan. 12. “When I first started drawing seriously a few years ago ... I came across some pictures of myself as a dancer,” the Nor- thumberland area artist said. “I thought that would be fun to draw.” She found it was and then de- cided to paint pictures of fab- ric also, evoking memories and feelings of her past. The exhibit focuses on recent paintings all featuring fabric of some sort. Tate said the exhibit explores how fabric “contributes to the telling of our stories and how we make our mark on fabric and it makes its mark on us. “My interest in fabric stems from my earlier life as a profes- sional dancer. Thus, my earliest paintings involve the movement of fabric on bodies as they move through space -- a theme that still runs through my work. “The use of fabric in dance contributes significantly to the story being told and the cos- tumes often exaggerate the danc- er’s movements, thus amplifying the physicality being expressed.” She has since explored other types of fabric and other loca- tions where it’s found, from a Canadian flag draped on a cof- fin, to towels in a hamper, to rumpled bedclothes, to laundry on a line to pleated upholstery. “Fabric that has been cast aside or hung before or after use is of interested to me as such im- ages reflect the comings and go- ings of our lives in a way that is common to us all and therefore provides us with a human link,” Tate said. “The folds and shapes of such fabric create movement and rhythm within their stillness, a sense of a whispered vitality be- cause of recent human contact. The type of fabric, whether it is velvet, canvas or lace, stimulates the senses and the imagination in subtle and delightful ways.” Her works are usually cropped, providing snapshots of a fabric. She’ll focus on a body draped with fabric or a dress’s skirt or a piece of a quilt, rather than the whole thing. It’s not a psy- chological glitch, she explained with a laugh, but a desire to have viewers concentrate on the fab- ric, not a person or an object. “I really want people to see the fabric, the movement of the fabric,” she said. She also invites viewers to con- jure up their own stories behind the pieces of fabric she’s painted in her works. Her work features close looks at light, shadow and colour of fabric and the interplay of those aspects. Colours change with movement and with the change from light to dark, Tate noted. Some fabric she has rolled up, painting the spirals, with light and shadow, that result. The show also highlights her belief in the fragility of life and in showcasing “the overlooked treasures of daily life.” Tate has always drawn, filling the margins of her school note- books with doodles as a child. She sketched and illustrated a newspaper column for chil- dren after university, helping to pay the rent while she studied, performed and taught modern dance. But she didn’t start drawing and painting seriously until a few years ago. She danced, raised her chil- dren and trained as a craniosa- cral therapist, something she’s practised since 1991. In 2002, she picked up her pencils again and then took to painting, chal- lenging herself to learn new techniques and experiment with new mediums. “Painting is quite new to me but it’s so much fun,” she said. “It’s amazing. I feel very blessed that I have this aspect to my life.” She’s exhibited throughout Nor- thumberland and at the Visual Arts Centre in Bowmanville, where she won the Mayor’s Award in the juried art show last fall. She’s looking forward to her exhibit at the Kent Farndale Gal- lery, especially since meeting Kent Farndale, the catalyst for the gallery, in November. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, January 11, 2008 PAGE 17 A/Pdurhamregion.com ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT durhamregion.com Durham artist wants us to see ‘movement of the fabric’ By Roland Cilliers rcilliers@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Fifteen local hip- hop acts are facing off at The Big Sexy night club for a chance to open for a multi-platinum artist. The event is being put on by Peter Jackson, a local artist who has opened for acts like the Wu- Tang Clan, Beanie Man, Nas, Lloyd Banks, and Joe Budden. The competition is called the High Life Home Grownin Talent Search and those interested in getting tickets can call 905-706- 4827. “It gives a lot of artists a little more shine and it lets them per- form for more people than they usually would,” says Jackson. “We’re bringing in some label reps and major managers who can bring a lot more notice to them.” says Jackson. Concerts like this are impor- tant for local artists says pro- moter Amanda Cretto. “Hip Hop isn’t as big in Cana- da as it is in the States and events like this help talent get recog- nized,” says Cretto. “There’s lots of little events put on in the area but most peo- ple don’t even know about them, that’s why we’re really trying to promote and get this event rec- ognized,” she says. Participants will perform two songs to try and impress the au- dience. Finalists are then chosen according to audience applause. When the competition is down to the top three, the final cham- pion is chosen by the judges, who will be professionals from the hip-hop industry. The winner receives studio time to record and a chance to open for an as-yet-unnamed multi-platinum selling artist. The competition is being spon- sored by several Durham Region businesses including the Front Line Agency, Highlife Hempwear Clothing, and Hip Hop GTA. The show takes place on Feb. 8 at The Big Sexy night club, 39 King St. E. in Oshawa. Artists take to the stage at 10 p.m. with tickets costing $10. The Rams scored first on the power play before the game was two minutes old and added an- other less than three minutes later to put the Spartans on their collec- tive heels. Although the Spartans shaved the Rams’ lead to one goal on three occasions, the Ajacians were able to maintain their two- goal lead en route to a 5-3 victory. The Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) regular- season game at Pickering’s Don Beer Sports Arena took on height- ened significance as it represented a battle between two squads sport- ing perfect league records -- the Spartans (20-1-0 overall) at 8-0 and the Rams (17-3-0 overall) owning a 7-0 mark. But, it was the Rams who checked out with their unbeaten record in- tact. Rams’ coach Craig Nemis will gladly take the win as his squad put in a solid effort with four key play- ers missing from the line-up. “It was a very good game, very tight,” says Nemis. “We’ve been looking forward to this game for quite a while. Dunbarton is a fan- tastic team and our boys were really excited to match up against them.” Nemis says the key to victory was unequivocally his team’s fast start. “Getting on the board first. They’ve lost once in 21 games, so getting on them early startled them a bit. If they had scored the first goal it would have been a completely different game,” says Nemis. Spartans’ coach Brad Reeson agreed the Rams’ fast start definite- ly rattled his players who weren’t used to facing any form of adversity so far this season. “We had enough chances to change the game, but we couldn’t do it, so give them credit,” says Reeson. “It was not the start we wanted, but that’s hockey...It was probably the worst start we’ve had this season. “They’re a great team and we knew it was going to be a good learning experience for our guys,” he added. Nemis praised the work of stal- wart defenceman Mark Ramkema, who not only played the majority of the game while defending against the Spartans’ top offensive line, but also chipped in offensively in a big way, scoring twice. “We asked a lot of him. He had to match up against the big Dunbar- ton line. He logged a lot of ice time,” observed Nemis. After Ajax High potted two quick goals off the sticks of Ramkema and Brett Holmberg, the Spartans got on the board with a goal by Andrew Rhodes, his first of two in the con- test. The goal came with the teams playing 4-on-4. The Rams, how- ever, re-established their two-goal margin with 1:51 remaining in the first period. Ramkema’s shot found room between the pads of Spar- tans’ goaltender Andrew Leclair for his second of the game. Rhodes scored just 1:04 into the second period to cut the Rams’ lead to one goal. The Rams, however, came back with the goal by Ryan Brawley on a nifty passing play with teammate Kevin Watts while on a 2-on-1 break for a 4-2 lead. With 7:06 remaining in the third, the Spartans cut the Rams lead to 4-3 on a goal by Blake Boddy off a long, lead pass. With 1:14 remain- ing in the game, Watts netted an insurance goal for the Rams on a breakaway after his shot hit the post, bounced off Leclair and into the net. The Spartans and Rams each have one game remaining in the regular-season schedule -- the Rams against Monsignor Paul Dwyer Saints of Oshawa on Thurs- day, Jan. 17, the Spartans against Pickering rival St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Monarchs, also on Jan. 17. Annandale curlers help rink get to Canadians By Jim Easson Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — Two Annandale curlers joined a Burlington team for the On- tario Junior Women’s Curling Cham- pionships and emerged as champs. The Danielle Inglis rink of Bur- lington was one of eight rinks to compete for the provincial title at the Coldwater and District Curling Club from Jan. 2 to 6. Joining the Inglis rink were Annandale’s Chantal Lalonde at vice and Tracy O’Leary at the second. Pam Feldkamp of Bur- lington, at lead, was the other team member. The championship game against Rachel Homan of the Ottawa Curl- ing Club was tied 4-4 after nine ends. The Inglis team sidelined Homan with a single in the 10th end. Inglis finished tied atop the stand- ings with a 5-2 mark in order to earn The Spartans played on Tuesday afternoon in Pickering against the Pine Ridge Secondary School Pumas, winning 7-4. Andrew Rhodes had two goals to lead Dunbarton; Chris Wright, Ian Watters, Alex Clements, Blair Kimble and Colin Campbell were the other goal scorers. Evan Haga netted a hat trick for the Pumas; Brandon Pearson had the other marker... The Rams will play in a big tournament in Peterborough this weekend... The Spartans were ranked as the No. 1 team in the GTA, while the Rams were at No. 5. Those rankings will likely change as a re- sult of Wednesday’s Ajax High win over Dunbarton. Although still mathematically in the playoff hunt, the Panthers need a win tonight (Friday) against the Toronto Junior Canadians at the Pickering Recreation Complex (7:30 p.m.) to keep their thin hopes alive. The Panthers went 0-2 last week- end, losing to the Durham Fury of Os- hawa 5-3 on home ice and 8-0 to the Vaughan Vipers in Vaughan in OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League regular-season action. Last weekend’s losses were the Pan- thers’ sixth and seventh straight. The Panthers trailed the Fury 5-1 after two periods before scoring the only two goals in the final frame to make it close. Going into last Friday’s game, the Panthers were woefully short of play- ers and, with no call-ups from the To- ronto Red Wings ‘AAA’ midget affiliate available, the Panthers forged ahead with 11 forwards and four defence- men. With too few bodies, the writing was on the wall for the struggling Pan- thers, noted head coach Mark Joslin. “I feel for the players,” he says. “It’s tough to be in a situation where it’s do-or-die, and if you get some bodies it could be a different result.” Ironically, in the Vaughan game, Joslin says his players performed well, with many of the Vipers’ goals coming off bad bounces. “There were at least four or five fluky bounces that went in the net. You can’t do anything about those. We actually had a good game. It was better than the score indicated,” he explains. The Pickering juniors (9-26-1) re- main in the basement of the league’s South Conference standings, 11 points behind the North York Rangers, which own the sixth and final playoff spot in the conference. Greg Payne, Daniel Mandel and Greg Riggs scored for the Panthers against Durham. Chad Beal, Payne, Scott Brown and Aaron Atwell record- ed assists. The thirty years I shared with you Are worth their weight in gold, The sisterhood that you gave me is mine forever to have and to hold. Five birthdays have now gone by That I have to celebrate without you It's weird to have the day to myself And I never know what quite to do. Remembering you is easy, Trace, I do it everyday, But missing you is heartache That never goes away. I hold you close within my heart As a part of me you will always remain, To walk with me throughout my life Until we meet again.
