The 12-year-old St. Anthony Daniel Catholic School student was one of 20 Ajax and Pickering kids who were given $200 gift cards to buy Christmas presents at the town centre for the Cop Shop event. Students were chosen by local school boards based on need, recognition of academic or sports achievements, or volunteering. The kids were paired up with Dur- ham Regional Police officers, who acted as their personal shoppers. “We had more (police) volun- teers than needed, and they’re all here on their own time,” said Lorna Murphy, PTC marketing director. The kids also got a pizza lunch courtesy of East Side Mario’s, stockings filled with PTC retailer merchandise, and visits from Santa Claus and Police Chief Mike Ewles. “Cop Shop is an opportunity for officers to give back to the com- munity we serve,” Chief Ewles said in a press release. “It also allows our youth to see police in a positive light and interact with officers in a meaningful way.” Taylor didn’t only shop for her- self: she bought gifts for every stu- dent in her class, and even dropped off a gift for the Toy Mountain Holi- day Toy Drive. Her school princi- pal, Mike Young, said he wasn’t surprised. “She’s one of those kids who does things for everyone and doesn’t ex- pect anything in return,” he said. Besides the fun shopping spree, Taylor said she enjoyed talking to her partner, Police Constable Dave BRUCE BISSELL BUICK PONTIAC LTD. 301 Bayly St. W., Ajax (between Westney & Harwood) 905-683-6561 www.bissellbuick.com EVERYONE’S A WINNER! To meet the needs of this growing sector of the com- munity, Regional council has given Dr. Drouin the go- ahead to set up a diversity committee and strategy. “The idea has really been developing over the last year,” he said. “Sister regions like York and Peel have had diversity committees for some time.” The Region is compet- ing with regions across the Greater Toronto Area for the existing pool of immigrants, in particular those in the skilled trades and interna- tionally trained profession- als. Dr. Drouin said a strong diversity strategy will assist the Region in actively par- ticipating in the attraction and retention of skilled im- migrants who would in turn contribute to the future so- cial and economic develop- ment of the region. “We want to welcome them and help them to in- tegrate into our community as fast possible,” Dr. Drouin said. The committee will as- sist in co-ordinating exist- ing diversity initiatives and develop new ones to con- tribute to the current and future integration of new immigrants in Durham. The committee will have representation from the rel- evant Regional departments and appropriate partners. The committee would over- see the development of a region-wide diversity strat- egy. “This country is the only country in the world that has a policy that allows 250,000 people to come to this great country,” Whitby Councillor Joe Drumm said during the Dec. 12 meeting of Regional council, when the recommendation to strike the committee was approved. Coun. Drumm, who him- self immigrated to Canada from Ireland, went on to say that more needed to be done to integrate immi- grants into the community. “Immigration used to be relatively easy. Now when you attend swearing in cer- emonies there are people of all different ethnic origins,” he said. “As a consequence it has gotten more difficult to integrate.” Join us for breakfast, lunch & dinner Mon. to Sat. 7am - 9pm Sun. & Holidays 8am - 3pm ~ Extensive Menu ~ Steaks, Seafood, Pastas, Fresh Fruit, and Much MoreHwy 401 Achillies Rd.Harwood Ave.Salem Rd.Westney Rd.Station St. Serving the best in food quality in a pleasant & comfortable atmosphere. Morton helped organize the event, and said he was amazed by the generosity of the children when he saw the shopping lists they submitted beforehand. “Most of the wish lists had items for people other than themselves,” he said. St. Wilfrid Catholic School student, Court- ney Klavet, 11, didn’t know what it was like to power-shop until she spent the afternoon tearing through her favourite stores. “Now I know what they mean, ‘shop ‘til you drop’,” she said at the end of her shopping spree. Her partner, Const. Jennifer Kelloway, said she had a great time helping Courtney, and learned what a smart girl she is. She was happy to volunteer. “I thought, for these kids it’s an opportu- nity they might not get otherwise,” she said. She added it gave police officers an oppor- tunity to reward children for the good things they’ve done in the community, rather than punish them for doing the wrong things. Courtney, for example, was invited to join because of her improving grades and posi- tive attitude. She also got a pet albino corn snake from her mother as a reward. “This is the best day of my life, I tell you,” she said. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Hospital sites need to work together The Rouge Valley Health System has received a one-time, much-needed $8-million booster shot with a little help from its friends in the health care industry. Those “friends” included a three-member panel of top hos- pital administrators from Markham Stouffville Hospital, North York General Hospital and Toronto General Hospital who did a peer review of RVHS’s entire operations. They recently submit- ted their report to the RVHS board and to the Central East Local Health Integration Network. As a result of review, the money is flowing from the Ministry of Health. The review was launched because RVHS was unable to sub- mit a balanced budget for the 2007-08 year, leading to the deci- sion to look at everything the two-site hospital service provides for patients. Part of the changes happening at RVHS over the past year includes a turnaround plan that leaves RVHS with a new chief executive officer, and new hires in the posts of chief nursing officer, financial officer and director of communications. RVHS chairman of the board Tom Atkins feels the new faces will help RVHS operated within a balanced budget. The link between the two sites -- Ajax-Pickering Health Centre and Scarborough Centenary Hospital -- has been frought with concerns over the past decade. The perception has been the smaller site, Ajax, has not received the same care or attention to detail as has Scarborough. The report identified problems of a “me too” attitude which can result in duplication because of competition and jealousy between the two sites. The message is that there needs to be a higher level of co-op- eration and co-ordination between the two sites so that the best level of care can be provided within the entire catchment area. There was good news for those in the eastern section of the hospital’s service area as the report advocates for redevelop- ment at the Ajax site although it could be delayed. The report also recommends the creation of a community advisory committee to provide input to the RVHS board. That can only help. Helping others at Christmas Christmas now so consumer-driven, easy to forget about those who need help I love presents. In fact, I get a little sad once all the gifts are opened up on Christmas morning and there’s nothing left but a lonely Christmas tree. But there is a limit, and I think society as a whole has pushed it too far. Last Friday night, I decided to do some shopping at the Pickering Town Centre. As I was slowly driving in search of a spot, I received some angry honks and saw what I assumed to be nasty words coming from the driver behind me in my rearview mir- ror. Isn’t Christmas a time to be joyful and happy, not cursing and swearing and huff- ing and puffing through the malls? Meanwhile, I was about to shop for some loved ones and drop off some change for the Salvation Army. And I wasn’t shopping to buy the most expensive gaming systems or plasma televisions for the people on my list. I refuse. It seems every year Christmas becomes more hectic and commercialized. I’ve over- heard conversations about buying extrava- gant gifts, like expensive jewelry and trendy sweaters. And it makes me nervous because all I plan on buying the people on my list are maybe some books I think they’ll enjoy or a couple of CDs I’ve heard them mention. Now I’m trying my hardest to resist being sucked into a competition of who buys the best gift. Personally, I don’t even want the best present. Just get me a cute little ornament for my Christmas tree and donate a little to charity, would you? That may sound cliche, but I really think it’s rare these days that people think of what Christmas is really about. There are many people who are less for- tunate in Durham. When talking to peo- ple in organizations whose clients benefit from the Santa Claus Fund, for example, I learned that if it weren’t for the gift boxes they receive, there would be nothing under their tree. Can you imagine a child waking up on Christmas morning, the day most children in their classrooms excitedly count down to, with nothing to look forward to? There are mothers and children spend- ing Christmas at Herizon House, many of whom have nothing. Perhaps it would be a nice gesture to donate some items (which can be as inexpensive as $1) to the drop off spot at Sobeys in south Ajax for their fresh start. Instead of walking by the bell ringers for the Salvation Army, why not reach into your pockets and dig out some change? It might make you feel good. It’s nice to treat the people close to you, but don’t forget that not everyone has that privilege, and spreading the wealth is not such a bad idea. Where are our rights today even when the courts rule in one’s favour? It seems that going through all the legal channels and having a contract doesn’t hold any weight with our politicians or the landlord. What kind of signs are we giving the individual/family-run business to invest in Pickering? Don’t come, only multi-corpo- rations are welcome, go somewhere else and get out of our way, our pockets are toooo deep for small businesses!???? True Canadian way, eh! Jeannette Hanko Pickering P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, December 21, 2007 durhamregion.com Thanks to all who helped with snow clean up To the editor: Today everyone is digging out following a wild weekend of heavy snow and strong winds. Great credit goes to the road crews, the transit drivers, the po- lice, fire department and hydro crews, besides many others who worked overtime. Credit also goes to those who spent hours shovelling snow for seniors and the disabled, who were unable to do it themselves. Helping the less fortunate shows the true spirit of Christmas. At the Dec. 12 meeting of Regional Council, not only could Oshawa Council- lor Robert Lutczyk not get a motion that would have required Regional staff to do a broad report on differ- ent forms of waste manage- ment, but he also couldn’t get the rules waived to even introduce the motion. Coun. Lutczyk said his at- tempt to introduce the mo- tion wasn’t pre-planned. “There seemed to be some support out there for looking at putting every- thing on the table for con- sideration,” he said. “Right now the march- ing orders are for incinera- tion, but I know a whole lot of people are out there and there are new people on council and there is a greater support of looking at other forms of waste man- agement.” To introduce a motion requires that two thirds of council vote to waive the rules allowing the motion to be brought forward. But, council voted against waiv- ing the rules. That’s just as well, Mr. Curtis said, because the Re- gion has already done ex- tensive studies into forms of waste management other than incineration. “A major study done in late 90s looking at landfill versus incineration and anything else they could come up with,” Mr. Curtis explained. “It came back clearly that landfill was not an option and certainly not a local landfill.” The study came up with a number of points that were incorporated into Durham and York Regions’ long-term waste management strategy to effectively address man- aging waste. “Those points included maximizing blue box col- lection, adding green bin and achieving at least a 50 per cent diversion by Janu- ary 2007, which we did and in fact we are doing better than that.” The final point in the plan is to pursue incineration as the preferred method of dealing with Durham’s waste. Even though he didn’t get two thirds this time around, Coun. Lutczyk said he can see the tide changing. “I am sure that line will be crossed long before we go with incineration,” he said. scratch &save December 2 1 s t , 2 2 n d , 2 3 r d a n d 2 4 t h *On all regular, sale & clearance-priced items storewide! Working York Region District School Board teacher Julia McCrea won an Oshawa trustee seat last November. However, under the Education Act, a trustee cannot be em- ployed by a school board without taking a leave of absence. Ms. McCrea chose not to resign from teaching and as a result, could not be sworn in as a trustee. The Durham District School Board held a byelection for the seat that cost about $138,000. In September, the board wrote to the Province about the issue, copying the letter to the City of Oshawa. The board said Oshawa’s clerk appeared to believe that she was only responsible for compliance with the Municipal Act, not the Education Act. The City responded with a letter in late November. Rick Stockman, Commissioner of Cor- porate Services for Oshawa, wrote the City Clerk is well aware of her responsibilities under both acts, as well as the Municipal Elections Act. The Declaration of Qualifica- tion form Ms. McCrea signed asked if she was an employee of “the” school board, not “a” school board. “The onus of responsibility to take the oath and swear to those qualifications rests with the candidate,” he wrote. “I read into that if they were to do it again, they’d do it the same way. That to me is an insult to the letter we sent,” said Oshawa Trustee Larry Jacula. The board also expressed dissatisfaction with a letter from the Province in response to the situation last month. ‘Masterbedrooms’ Is More Than Just The BEST Sleep Selection!‘Masterbedrooms’ Is More Than Just The BEST Sleep Selection! She wrote to the local Indepen- dent grocery store near where she lives in Bracebridge, to see if she could get 10 cases of the individual pouches of powder, which adds flavour to bottled water, at whole- sale price. Flavouring water is a treat, said Ms. Cushman. After all, soldiers in Afghanistan must drink a bottle of water -- often warm, since refriger- ation isn’t always possible -- every 20 minutes. Soldiers have told her the straw- berry-kiwi flavour is most popular, since “it’s the one that tastes the best warm.” A few days later, she found out the local grocer had bettered the wholesale price -- she could have the 10 cases and they were a dona- tion from the store. Thirty minutes later, “four sol- diers came to my home to tell me the saddest news I’ve ever re- ceived,” said Ms. Cushman, her voice wavering with tears. “I lost Darryl that day.” Trooper Caswell, 25, was killed in the line of duty June 11 in Af- ghanistan. Just six weeks from re- turning home from his six-month stint overseas, the Bowmanville High School graduate was killed when the vehicle in which he was driving was struck by an explosive device about 40 kilometres north of Kandahar City. After the funeral for her son was over, Ms Cushman decided she wasn’t going to stop her tradition of sending care packages to the soldiers. In her son’s memory, she pledged to get even more Crystal Light over there through a pro- gram she calls Darryl’s Light. She got Kraft, the makers of Crystal Light, on side. They offered to match her box-for-box. The military offered to provide transport. And through a number of events, including Bowmanville’s Applefest where she had a booth, she got the public to donate 1,000 cases of Crystal Light, enough to change 336,000 bottles of water. Ms. Cushman took the cases of water apart so people could spon- sor individual boxes. On the back of the boxes, each holding eight pouches of Crystal Light, supporters were able to write a message to the solider, leading Ms. Cushman to call them “Sweet Post Cards.” “They would make you laugh, cry, everything,” she said. The cases were loaded onto a transport and “I escorted it down the Highway of Heroes in an OPP car to Trenton,” said Ms. Cushman. From there, they went to Afghani- stan. + BOXING DAY STARTS TODAY! The recent heavy snowfall has prompted Ajax Fire and Emergency Services to remind residents to clear snow around fire hydrants, exit doors, stairways, fire escapes and furnace vents for easy access. Vent pipes from direct vent furnaces can also get buried by snow and could cause a safety problem. Built in safety features may shut down your furnace, but carbon monoxide build-ups can still occur before shut down. In 2007 more than 392 incidents of carbon monoxide problems in the home were reported. Most of them had to do with warming up vehicles in an attached garage. Carbon monoxide levels will build up and then gradually seep into the home. The by-election is set for March 1. It was called after former councillor Joe Dick- son in October won the Ajax- Pickering seat in the provincial election. Given that roughly three-quarters of the four-year council term remains, Ajax Council opted for a by-elec- tion instead of appointing a new councillor. The last day for candidates to file is Jan. 16. Ward 2 is bounded by Hwy. 401, Westney Road, the 5th Concession and Lake Ridge Road. Whether you’re just think- ing about selling your small business or are ready to move on, it’s always good to be prepared for anything. GW Equity, an Ameri- can company specializing in assisting small busi- ness owners with mergers, gains, losses and strategic growth initiatives, has com- piled a list of New Year’s resolutions to help business owners make a smooth sale transition. 1. Get organized. Have books balanced, tax returns and income statements handy and the company’s customer base, supplier and employee list up to date. Not only will it make the sale process go smoother, it may also increase the value of the company. 2. Ask for help. There are many aspects to selling a business that you may not know about. Enlist a group of experts for up to date in- formation and assistance such as lawyers, realtors, bankers and accountants. Their professional advice will ensure common mis- takes aren’t made and they may even help you score a better price. 3. Know your buyers. Owners often make the mistake of thinking a fam- ily member, competitor or current employee may be the best buyer. In fact, a company’s worth is often higher for public or private companies, foreign buyers or private equity firms. 4. Have a valuation. Busi- ness owners often think they know what their company is worth, but not only is the value based on assets like cash, inventory, equipment and buildings, there are also many other things to con- sider. The market condition and future profit are huge factors. Valuation updates should be done annually to stay up to date. 5. Become more attrac- tive to buyers. When selling, the owner should be pitch- ing a future, not the past. By developing a looking-for- ward budget, a buyer can be more comfortable with the costs and income of the business, making a decision easier. 6. Remain quiet about the sell. Until you are sell- ing for sure, word may get out about the prospective sell and may affect your short-term business. Sup- pliers, loyal customers and employees may create un- necessary conflict and un- easiness. 7. Make future plans. Both sellers and buyers will be at ease with better structure for both the sale transition and the future. Often a seller is looking to retire, so creating a wealth plan can be helpful to prepare for the future. 8. Be patient. The process of selling a business is not easy. With time, preparation and patience, any business owner can achieve success and receive the maximum value for their company. 14 D a y 14 D a y Holi d a y pas s e s .99*.99* *lim ited t i m e o f f e r WINTERWINTER MEMBER S H I P S MEMBER S H I P S From From $349$349.99.99 CHRISTMASCHRISTMAS GIFT CERTIFICATESGIFT CERTIFICATES NOW AVAILABLE!NOW AVAILABLE!Markham RoadMcCowan RoadHwy 401 Milner Ave. N FREE RANGE TIME Adult & Junior Sessions Begins Jan 12-17 Limited Space Register NOW Only $$1241249999 Buy 1/2 hour of range time and receive 1/2 hour FREE! Eco-Tec is announcing its biogas pu- rification system in partnership with Régie de gestion des matières résidu- elles de la Mauricie (RGMRM) of Que- bec. “We are pleased to be a part of RGM- RM’s long-term plans to reduce green- house gases,” said Carmine Fontana, Eco-Tec’s VP Business Development. The system’s innovative process in- cludes the capture, purification and use of biogas as an alternative energy source for greenhouses. Eco-Tec was recently awarded the Canadian Innovation Award for En- vironmental Technology by the Ca- nadian Manufacturers and Exporters association for this biogas technology. Biogas is a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide and is sometimes con- taminated with toxic quantities of hy- drogen sulfide. This purification system’s process includes a ga-conditioning system in which toxins are absorbed and the gas is purified for use in power generation facilities as well as other heating ap- plications including heat for tomato greenhouses. “Hot house tomatoes are not the only beneficiary of biogas puri- fication technology,” said Mr. Fontana. The system also offers cost savings as- sociated with less maintenance, in- creased process and energy efficiency, and reduced toxic emissions. Eco-Tec manufactures water purification, gas processing and chemical recovery sys- tems for industrial operations. Eco- Tec’s partner, RGMRM, is a municipal organization that runs most of the mu- nicipal landfills in the Mauricie region of Quebec. Each landfill has a lifespan of over 60 years, but generates a large amount of biogas. As a result, the school’s five intermediate classes of Grade 7 and 8 students spent a day at the Good Shepherd Centre in Toronto, which serves homeless men. Grade 8 student Danyelle Perdurupillai said the students experienced the true meaning of Christmas. “We experienced other people’s perspective and how they live and it was sad, but it was also fun because we got to work together as a class and we helped others.” Paula Canapini’s Grade 8 class came up with the idea to volunteer at the shelter and worked with the other students to organize donations prior to travelling to Toronto, collecting food and men’s clothing for a total of 15 or 16 boxes of food and a dozen garbage bags of clothing. “What really struck me is the students came up with this. It’s something they wanted to do,” said the school’s principal, Neil Boland. Kristy Garcia said the students pitched in in a number of areas, including to prepare the 91 beds that opened up each evening. Although the students didn’t work with the homeless directly, they said they’re aware their time made an impact. “When I went to bed last night, I was think- ing out of the four beds I made, I think I made a difference,” said Kimberly Williams, also a Grade 8 student. Her classmate Alicia Harracksingh agrees. “It was snowy and you can imagine what it was like outside,” she said. Vengeful barber is latest character in Johnny Depp’s arsenal By John Foote jfoote@IAOD.com Sweeney Todd Directed by Tim Burton In theatres **** These last four years have been a celebration of the talents of Johnny Depp, though most of us have been celebrating Depp since his breakthrough performance in ‘Edward Scis- sorhands’ (1990), nearly 18 years ago. At that time it was clear he possessed the same gifts for physical comedy and drama as a young Chaplin and was obviously a most gifted actor. Through the years we would become more and more aware of Depp’s gifts as an actor. It seems to be his work with Tim Burton that attracts the lion’s share of attention, in ‘Edward Scissorhands’, ‘Sleepy Hollow’ (1999), as ‘Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ (2005). While Depp has a strong comfort level with Burton, he has also done extraordinary work with other directors. This is a good-looking man, a beautiful man who could have had a career as a leading ro- mantic lead, but chose to be a character actor. Look at the many times Depp has played down his beauty, choosing to wear make-up or in other cases portraying a rotten character with- in? This is an actor through and through, and one of the finest of the modern cinema. His bizarre performance as Captain Jack Sparrow in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ (2003) is a work of genius when one considers that there is noth- ing on the page within the screenplay to sug- gest playing the part as he did. He did that, he created that and though the Disney executives were terrified, the performance was acclaimed and earned him an Oscar nomination. Now As Sweeney Todd, Depp gives what might be the finest performance of his career in a role that is certain- ly one of the most courageous he has undertaken. Having never sung on screen before, Depp confidently tackles his first musical role with his usual daring, throwing himself into the role, leaving behind any trace of what we know to be Depp the actor. This is as twisted a performance as you will see on screen this year, a deeply psychotic man driven to do terrible things by a past he cannot shake and forgiveness he cannot find it within himself to bestow. Having escaped from prison, Todd sails up the Thames with one single purpose; to get even with the man, Judge Turpin (Alan Rick- man), who sent Todd away to jail on false charges so he could have the man’s young wife and daughter. When he learns that his beloved committed suicide and that the nasty old judge now has romantic designs on his daughter, Todd devises a plan to allow him to exact a most gruesome revenge on all who cross his path. He takes a room above a pie shop run by a Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) and begins to slaughter his customers who are dropped through a vat directly below to the gleeful Mrs. Lovett who cooks their corpses into meat pies that sell like hot cakes. It all begins when a rival barber, brilliantly portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen, makes clear he plans to expose Todd’s real identify. The demon barber slashes his throat without hesi- tation, leaving the body to Mrs. Lovett, who gets the idea for her pies. The film becomes a dance towards death as Todd tries to get close to the evil judge who tore his life apart. I found ‘Sweeney Todd’ wholly superb, with Depp and Bonham-Carter outstanding in their lead roles, handling the singing with per- fection. Obviously Burton went for actors who could handle the singing, which was an excel- lent choice. Depp is terrifying, with an evil glint in his eyes fuelled by a mad revenge. Cohen’s performance here very nearly steals the show from Depp. His few scenes are elec- trifying and have the makings of announcing this man is going to be a huge star. Deep-voiced Alan Rickman, so good when portraying a villain, is at his nastiest as Judge Turpin, a sneering upper class Brit who looks down on anyone he decides is beneath him because it is his right as a Brit to do so. He becomes a perfect target for Sweeney because his actions are so loathsome. Best known these days as Professor Snape in the Harry Pot- ter franchise, Rickman is a wonderful actor, making use of the deep rumbling voice that suggests either heaven or hell, depending on the character. Burton’s film is a masterful adaptation of the famous Sondheim stage play, creating for us an England that looks for all the world like the England in the old Hammer horror films, not quite real, but surrealistic, which is the perfect look. One of the best films of the year and Oscar bound. John Foote, director of the Toronto Film School, is a nationally known film historian/ critic and a Port Perry resident. The Ontario Trillium Foundation, at its re- cent Great Grants Awards ceremony, award- ed the DWAC its Arts and Culture Award. The DWAC is a group seeking to build a permanent arts centre in Durham Region and, at the same time, offering a variety of arts programming. The OTF award recog- nizes DWAC’s work between 2003 and 2006, following its receipt of a $150,000 OTF grant. “In its short history, the Centre has achieved astounding results,” reads the awards pro- gram. “Over the granting period, 100 commu- nity locations enjoyed arts events, including the Franklin community read-a-thon, and Reading and Remembrance, a provincial project honouring veterans. The Centre’s cul- tural connections committee co-ordinated many free multicultural music and dance events. In 2006, OTF made another grant ($225,000) to the Centre to help support its goal of a permanent arts centre in Durham Region.” “Thanks to the OTF grant, DWAC has the infrastructure to move forward,” said Angie Littlefield, the DWAC’s former executive di- rector, in a press release. “The second OTF grant and this prestigious award show that we are right on track.” ‘Depp gives what might be the finest performance of his career.’ JOHN FOOTE durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 26 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, December 21, 2007 SPORTS sportsdurhamregion.com THIS WEEKEND The Pickering Panthers OHA junior ‘A’ hockey team hosts the Toronto Junior Canadians tonight (Friday) at the Pickering Recreation Complex at 7:30 p.m. Ashley Riggs continues to set torrid pace with Niagara Purple Eagles PICKERING — A Pickering woman is among 21 of the top female hockey players in Canada who’ll be in Calgary for the na- tional women’s team evaluation camp next month. Ashley Riggs, 22, is joining 11 other forwards at the camp, which runs between Jan. 20 to 27. It’s one of several evaluation tools that Canada’s coaching staff is using to determine the roster that will represent Canada at the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Championship in Harbin, China from April 4 to 13. The 21 players who will be in Calgary, says Canadian head coach Peter Smith, are part of a larger pool of players being considered for the world championship team. “It is an exciting time for our staff and potential players,” says Smith in a press release. “We are moving closer and closer to the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Cham- pionship, but there is still a lot of work to be done before we an- nounce that roster. The evaluation camp in Calgary is an important stage in the overall process.” Canada’s world championship roster will be made up of players who have been part of the Nation- al Women’s Team, National wom- en’s under-22 team or national women’s under-18 team programs at some point during this season. Players who participated in the 2007 national women’s team fall festival and/or 4 Nations Cup who have not been invited to the Janu- ary evaluation camp are still part of the group of players being consid- ered for the 2008 World Champion- ship team. Riggs con- tinues to be a mainstay for the Ni- agara Uni- versity (Ni- agara Falls, NY) Purple Eagles wom- en’s hockey team, where she cur- rently holds 11 school records and is close to breaking eight more. The junior forward is currently tied for the all-time power-play goal record (21) and the all-time short-handed goal record (7). Riggs currently has 98 points in her career, two away from the cen- tury mark. If Riggs should break the century mark, she would be- come only the third Purple Eagle in the program’s 10-year history to do so. Valerie Hall also holds the record for career points with 142, a mark that Riggs could break by her senior year if she continues at this torrid pace. The St. Mary Catholic Second- ary School grad is also climbing the ranks on five other record lists. Her nine game-winning goals has Riggs tied for third on the all-time list. She is also currently tied for eighth on the all-time assist list with 42. The forward is also third on the all-time goal list, with 55. She’s also tied for sixth for single- season power-play goals, as she has five currently. “Ashley is a true team player and very humble,” Purple Eagles’ head coach Margot Page said on the Niagara athletic website. “She is a joy to coach and a very unselfish player, which is rare with prolific scorers.” So far this season, Riggs has 12 goals and four assists for 16 points. With 12 goals in 14 games, she is on pace to break the record for most goals by a junior, which is 24. The Team Canada evaluation camp includes daily practices from Jan. 21 to 25. Games will be played Jan. 2, 25, 26 and 27. Ashley Riggs Pickering woman invited to Team Canada evaluation camp Second-period lapse leads to eighth straight junior ‘A’ loss AJAX — A second-period lapse led to the Ajax Attack’s eighth con- secutive loss in a close contest against the Durham Fury in Os- hawa on Tuesday night. The struggling Attack were clipped 4-3 by the Fury in OHA On- tario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League action at the Campus Ice Centre. After building a 3-1 lead through the early going of the second pe- riod, the Attack let it slip away with a flurry of Fury goals later in the frame. Durham scored three straight goals, all within a four-min- ute span in the second, including Kyle Speers’s marker with 4:02 re- maining, which stood up as the game winner. Neither team scored in the third period. It was the Fury’s eighth win of the season. Brandon Turner, Brad Sullivan and Ryan Marcuz tallied for the At- tack. The loss dropped the Attack (9- 23-2) into eighth place in the nine- team South Conference standings. Ajax is currently six points behind the sixth-place North York Rang- ers, which hold the sixth and final playoff berth in the conference. The Attack also lost 6-4 to the Markham Waxers in Markham last Friday, before being snowed out in a home contest against the Vaughan Vipers at the Ajax Com- munity Centre last Sunday. That postponed game is expected to be made up on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the community centre at 3 p.m. The Attack have two games re- maining before the Christmas break, both on home ice. The Pickering school, perfect through six games in (Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) league play, rebounded from an opening game loss at the Eastdale Eagles Christmas Classic to win the top prize at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre recently. After dropping a 3-1 de- cision to Stouffville, the Spartans reeled off wins of 9-0 over I.E. Weldon and 3-1 over A.B. Lucas to reach the playoff round, where suc- cessive wins of 3-0 over St. Peter’s, 4-2 over Stouffville, 4-0 over Pickering and 2-1 in overtime over Denis Mor- ris of St. Catharines earned them the gold medal. The Spartans were one of three Durham teams to reach the semifinals. The host team, Oshawa’s East- dale Eagles, lost 3-0 to Denis Morris before edg- ing the Pickering Trojans of Ajax 1-0 in the bronze medal game.
