HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2007_08_19Province announces $309 million more over next two years By Crystal Crimi ccrimi@durhamregion.com DURHAM — School boards got an unexpected dose of cash Wednesday from the provincial government. At a special announcement, held at Roberta Bondar Public School in Brampton Aug. 14, the Province announced $309 million more for school boards over the next two years. The money will be doled out as $182 million more for the 2007/2008 school year, and an ad- ditional $127 million for the next one. “Just good news, unexpected good news,” said Paul Pulla, the Durham Catholic District School Board’s director of education. Based on the Catholic board’s calculations, it will get about $2.1 million, he said, and added it’s still waiting for the technical details such as when the money will ar- rive. Mr. Pulla said the premier’s an- nouncement in Brampton was the first he’d heard of the additional funds. “It’s good news; any time school boards are allocated additional funding for student learning and student programs, that’s good news,” said Mr. Pulla. He said the money will help sus- tain and balance budgets. The new funds include support for more vice-principals for large schools, maintenance improve- ments, transportation, education assistants, and rural schools. “Myself and the board are pleased... I hope the word addi- tional is correct,” said Craig Burch, the Durham District School Board’s director of education. He added he assumes the word is correct. Especially pleasing to Mr. Burch is the Province’s move to increase the number of vice-principals in large schools, as well as additional support for secretaries. He be- lieves there can’t simply be a ratio for things such as the amount of vice-principals in a school. Cur- rently, schools don’t get a third vice-principal until they hit about 1,600 students, and a fourth until they near 2,000. Large schools can have more issues, causing vice- principals to put in a lot of extra- 35.2//-3s7).$/73s$//23 905-686-2445 Visit our showroom 239 Station St., Ajax Manufacturer of SUNROOMS & WINDOWS Available at the following Bell stores: Pickering Pickering Town Centre 905 837-1212 Whitby Whitby Mall 905 725-1212 Available within Bell Mobility and its partners’ coverage areas where technology permits. This year, 23 Dunbarton students and five teachers flew across the world to get their hands dirty by working on a secondary school in Tanzania. While the students went with a desire to help and see Africa with their own eyes, they returned home with a greater sense of ap- preciation, memories of big bugs, the sound of roosters and dog fights in the night, smiles of the people there, and an appetite to do more. “I felt like they’ve given me more than I’ve given them,” said Craig Watters, a Dunbar- ton student. “My perspective of the world has completely changed.” Dunbarton became involved in the con- struction project through Barry Sutherland, a teacher Dunbarton principal Rick White used to work with in Canada who is now principal of the International School Moshi in Tanzania. “Knowing what I know about Dunbarton, I thought this was something that would speak to the students and staff,” said Mr. White. Initially, 75 students showed interest in the project, but they could only take 24. Along with their commitment to help physically construct the school, students also had to raise $3,500 US for Moshi to buy building materials. Through corporate donations and bake and dough sales at the school, the group actually raised $4,000. “You wouldn’t believe the building mate- rial that bought,” said Mr. White, and added it helped build two full classrooms. They also brought pens and school sup- plies to give out. In Tanzania, the Dunbarton students participated in traditional concrete pour- ing techniques. They hand-bombed stones to be used for the bottom layer of the floor, which was then filled with concrete. “And it was long days in the hot sun and not one of our students complained,” said Mr. White. The students even wanted to ditch their free time and volunteer more. “I think it’s more fun than seeing ele- phants,” said Juraj Kobzik, a Grade 11 stu- dent. Working was his favourite part of the trip. “We felt the connection of one commu- nity,” said Juraj. He went on the trip because he wanted to give something back. Juraj always knew about life in Africa, but seeing it himself opened his eyes. “I appreciated everything a lot more, school and the fact I can eat every day,” he said. Grade 12 student Sheneil Black also feels more appreciative. “I learned how fortunate we are living here; we complain about everything like I have to have an iPod... down there they’re always happy and they have nothing,” said Sheneil. She wanted to go to Africa to help people there get an education. “Help them get what I have,” said Sheneil. Brittany Smith, a Grade 11 student, was impressed by all the community service present in helping to build the school. She said she has already started fundraising for an orphanage through her church. “I feel like I haven’t given them enough,” said Sheneil, and added she has been think- ing about joining Habitat for Humanity. “I just want to help people more now, people in need.” Mr. White said he wishes he could have had this experience as a teenager because it has the potential to positively impact lives. Search keyword: Kidshelp Here’s a look at some efforts students in other schools are involved in: • Pickering High School in Ajax: senior students volunteer every Wednesday and Friday morning to tutor juniors during the Food for Thought program. The tutors do prep work for the session, bring sup- plies, and show up 45 minutes before school starts to tutor their peers. Breakfast is pro- vided to participants. • Sir William Stephenson Public School in Whitby: students raised more than $5,500 in December for Free the Chil- dren’s Adopt-a-Village program. The money will be used to buy goats, cows, and sewing machines for a village in Kenya. • Our Lady of the Bay Catholic School in Pickering: students have been involved in various projects this year, such as visiting and volunteering at the Good Shepherd Centre shelter and food bank in Toronto, participating in the 20-Minute-Make- over event for Earth Day, tree planting in the conservation area, supporting food drives for Holy Redeemer Parish, helping with St. Vincent de Paul Outreach, donating gifts to local families in Pickering at Christmas time, and fundraising for the Royal Canadian Legion, students with autism, Jump Rope for Heart, and ShareLife. • Ormiston Public School in Whitby: students raised money to build a school in Sierra Leone through Free the Children. Of the $7,100 raised, $6,500 went to build the school and the rest to purchase backpacks with school supplies. • Fallingbrook Public School in Whitby: about 25 Grade 6 to 8 students participate in a Be the Change Club, which has a main focus of raising awareness about poverty in Kenya, Africa. The kids, all volun- teers, created a slideshow presentation to educate parents, staff and students. They’ve also partnered with Eagle Ridge Public School in Ajax to raise money to build a new school in Kenya; Fallingbrook raised $4,000 and Eagle Ridge, $10,000. Above, Robert Honsberger, Neel Joshi, Juraj Kobzik, and Devin Singh, partially blocked, move building materials used to build the walls of a class- room. The blocks were purchased through fundraising. In the photo at top, Sheneil Black has a visit from a local villager while working at the site. John Kulchycki of Ajax is taking part in the RONA MS Bike Tour this week- end. As in the past, Mr. Kulchycki is hoping to raise more than $3,000, the amount he’s collected annually. The two-day, 190-ki- lometre ride goes from Brampton to Waterloo and it’s one of five taking place in Ontario this year. Mr. Kulchycki got in- volved in the fundraiser for the multiple sclerosis society because a family member suffers from the disease. “I’m a healthy individ- ual and an avid cyclist. I can raise a lot of money and enjoy the tour at the same time,” he says. “I first saw it at the bike show and what had to be done.” While there are five tours in Ontario, there are others across the country and about 10,000 people will participate. The five Ontario tours vary in distance from 30 km to 190 km. Other tours include one from Grand Bend to London, Ottawa to Kemp- tville, Niagara Region and Toronto. Mr. Kulchycki has raised more than $3,000 each year he has participated. “I work in an office tower. There’s a lot of ten- ants I can go to. They’re very generous. I have no problems raising funds,” he says. Given the amount of cycling he does, Mr. Kulchycki says the 190-km ride isn’t a tough one for him. “I work at it very hard,” he notes. “This is the only one I do, Brampton to Waterloo. It’s the longest one. I like doing that one because of the length.” He’s been cycling for 10 years. “I love my bike. I go for a bike ride all the time.” Proceeds from the tour is used to fund research in the cause and cure of MS, as well as provide services for people suffering from the disease and their fami- lies. For those taking part, everything needed to enjoy the tour is provided, including food and bev- erages, rest stops, cyclist support vehicles, bicycle repair and prizes. Robber disarmed by cane-wielding senior By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A hapless bandit who found himself on the wrong end of a se- nior’s wrath during a drug store heist has been sent to prison for 15 years. Walter Wilson, whose last address was Bruce Street in Oshawa, was handed the term Wednesday by Ontario Court Justice Kofi Barnes. He’s also been ordered to submit a DNA sample to police and is banned from possessing weapons. Mr. Wilson, 43, made headlines after he and an accomplice walked into a pharmacy on Simcoe Street North in Oshawa July 23, intent on robbing the place. Mr. Wilson, armed with a knife and his face covered with a stocking, went to the pharmacy counter and de- manded narcotics. That’s when Whitby resi- dent Roy Dixon, 64, stepped in. Mr. Dixon grabbed a cane from a display in the shop and lit into the bandit, dis- arming him and subduing him. He held the suspect until Durham cops arrived and took him into custody. Mr. Wilson entered a guilty plea to weapons and robbery charges soon after his arrest. During Wednes- day’s hearing Justice Barnes considered a pre-sentence report and Mr. Wilson’s criminal record as factors in rendering judgment. Another man, 25-year-old Lee Silverthorne of Bruce Street, was also charged in connection with the rob- bery. 11KM NORTH OF HWY. #7 OFF ASH- BURN RD., 4 KM NORTH OF ASHBURNBURN RD., 4 KM NORTH OF ASHBURN PORT PERRY, ON. “A classic Thomas McBroom design preserved within the natural Oakridge Moraine.” • 6400 Yards • Par 71 • Slope 142 • Weekly Leagues • Tournaments • Public Play... EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com S ummer of heroes in Durham Region Heroes are all around us in Durham Region, and some of us owe our lives to them. And, in almost every case, they’re of the ‘I just did what anybody else would have done in the same situation’ vari- ety, or of the ‘I was just at the right place and the right time’ ilk. Humble people who suddenly find themselves in the spotlight because they’ve done something extraordinary, but are anxious to back away from the attention as quickly as possible and re- turn to their everyday lives. Two Friday nights ago, Alfredo Arellano heard screaming coming from Durham RV next to his workplace at Hollywood Inc. on Hwy. 7 in Pickering. He ran to investigate and discovered owner Phil Nedham working underneath an RV that was on fire. With great care, he grabbed the injured man’s belt and pulled him out, and then walked him away from danger. Mr. Arellano had already instructed Hollywood Inc. co-owner Rob Howard to call 911. The latter, admitting his adrenaline level was high at this point, then used his truck to drag the burning RV out of the shop, very likely saving the building from going up in flames. A few weeks ago it was a Whitby senior who went above and beyond the call of duty. When two men demanded drugs from a pharmacist in Oshawa, Roy Dixon, 64, grabbed a cane from a display and began to beat one of the culprits, who was armed with a knife. Mr. Dixon disarmed the man and, as if that wasn’t enough, held him until police arrived. One can only imagine the look on the shocked partner-in-crime’s face, who was appar- ently so surprised he didn’t flee and was also arrested. Police don’t recommend that citizens take this kind of action, but Mr. Dixon did, and police say he might receive an award for his heroics. Finally, a month ago a paramedic and a police officer were on their home on Hwy. 401 in Ajax around 3:10 a.m. after finishing their respective shifts when they came across a serious accident. A man was trapped in a burning vehicle, and Glen Gillies and cop Scott Hampson ran up to it and pulled the man out before the car burst into flames. Never mind the fake heroes we see on TV and in movies, we have real ones in Durham Region. And, while they don’t do it for the attention and even shy away from the publicity, we ap- plaud their heroism and concern for their fellow citizens. Incineration location a concern To the editor: Every time I drive the Lakeshore road from Newcastle to Port Hope, I shake my head in disgust at that mothballed coal-fired hydro generating plant down there, that we are still paying for in our hydro bills. When I first learned that electricity was being produced in Europe by incinerating non-recyclable garbage, I immediately thought of Wesleyville! That facility already boasts its own 401 interchange, roads system, rail sidings, buildings, a Lake Ontario freighter-dock and hydro transmission lines at- tached to the power grid. Ontario Power Generation already owns a huge swath of surrounding property and very few people live nearby. Scrap tires and the useless garbage of the GTA could fuel a new high-tech burner. The steam created would drive the turbines to create electricity and recyclable by-products could be returned to industry for re-use, using rail or ships so Hwy. 401 wouldn’t be affected. Ontario Hydro could turn a costly blunder into an immensely profitable venture. So my question is, why are we considering a location within a populated growth area when a blatantly viable facility already exists, 15 km east of Clarington? Doug Woods Bowmanville Adding more faith- based schools to the public system a bad idea T hese days it sounds like John Tory has gone more liberal than Dalton McGuinty. In what comes across as a desperate at- tempt to get more ethnic votes, Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives are promising that, if elected, they will appoint ex-pre- mier Bill Davis to lead a commission to in- vestigate the best way to bring faith-based schools into the public system. If the system was put in place, it would see $400 million directed its way from the Province which, as far as Oshawa Conservative MPP Jerry Ouellette knows, would be separate from the additional $800 million more the party is promising for education. When you think of all the problems cur- rently occurring in public school boards due to earmarked money and constant demands from teacher and staffing groups for more money, benefits, and so on, one has to ask if Mr. Tory and his supporters know what they are getting into. Adding more workers to the Province’s unions is a bad idea to start with, never mind the additional costs of funding building spaces in an education system that’s already experiencing declining en- rolment in places like Durham Region. A smarter, less expensive solution could be offering an optional faith pro- gram in schools, run by church volunteers for a short time before and after school. It would ensure a student whose family wants it, can get daily religious instruction at what is probably a fraction of the cost. Religion is a choice that we shouldn’t all have to pay for, the same way we don’t have to currently pay for the private school sector. Many will argue that the Catholic system receives funding, but that system is in- cluded in Canada’s constitution, written more than 100 years ago, and therefore inscribed in our country’s culture. Re- gardless of your faith, the Catholic system has been a big part of our country’s his- tory, which is clearly illustrated by our Province’s statutory holidays and the fact Christmas and Good Friday are included but not other religious holidays. The Catholic system also still has a population to support it receiving public funding. In Durham alone, there were 25,790 people enrolled in the Catholic board as of Oct. 31, 2006. According to Mr. Tory, the province has 53,000 students in faith-based schools. The Catholic system had the structures and enrolment in place to support public funding when it was introduced. Although it may not always be so, that’s the challenge the government should be pondering, not how to add more streams to an already money-hun- gry system. Before any party starts making long- term funding promises, it should first wait until it’s in power and can actually pay for the cheques being written for votes. After a month and a half of swimming, playing soccer, biking and vacationing, six- year-old Ethan Courtney- Snow is looking forward to going back to school, work- ing on some math, having recess and seeing all his friends. The Ajax boy has been keeping busy so far this summer. “Mostly swimming a lot,” said Ethan, while tak- ing a break from the lake at Pickering Millennium Square Park Aug. 16. He’s been swimming at beaches, splash parks, and even in the ocean in New- foundland while on a family vacation. “I looked at some rocks and had a walk,” said Ethan, rubbing his wet feet in the sand and tossing a rock in his hand while recounting his Newfoundland trip. His friend, Kyle Comeau, travelled this summer to Prince Edward Island. “I went to a beach where I found stuff like jellyfish,” said Kyle, age five, also from Ajax. “I didn’t find any star- fish.” Kyle said he picked up a crab and jellyfish. “I know how to hold it (jellyfish) properly,” said Kyle. The day before he was swimming at his “nana and papa’s.” He’s also played soccer for the Ajax Foxes. Melanie Corcoran, age 10 of Whitby, was visiting the Pickering lakefront for its splash park. She’s also been camping and to day camps. Other than that, she said she’s been doing “not that much actually. “Sitting at home and cleaning,” said Melanie. “I went to a drive-in theatre one time; we saw the Simp- sons and Fantastic Four. It’s fun.” Melanie’s looking forward to the last week of summer and finding out which class she’ll be in for this school year. David Walley, a Pickering nine-year-old, was visiting the beach with his grand- dad. “And I’ve been playing soccer and I do swimming,” said David. “I play soccer for fun.” He’s also been climbing trees, among other activi- ties. “It felt like a short sum- mer,” said David. Durham Dance Centre is a place to go, not only to dance, to learn to spin or to learn to point my toes, but also a place where lifelong relationships are formed. It is a place where I made life-long friends, where my team became my fam- ily — nothing feels better than being on the team at Durham Dance Centre. I started dancing at Durham Dance Centre 11 years ago when I was seven years old. For some unknown reason I thrived on tap dancing and Durham Dance was where my parents chose to enroll me. Not only did I learn to tap dance that fi rst year but I also took jazz and ballet classes. I even had the opportu- nity to compete in my fi rst dance competition and from that year forward, I remained at Durham Dance Centre. You may wonder why a dancer would wish to stay at the same place, being given the same instruc- tion for 11 years. But that’s just it! At Durham Dance Centre, I was given the opportunity to learn from a variety of different choreogra- phers, and I am not only speaking of those who teach at the studio but also of those who have visited Dur- ham. Every summer, Tammy Rob- erts, the president and artistic direc- tor of Durham Dance Centre, holds a one-week intensive summer dance camp for which she invites choreog- raphers from all over North America to come and teach her students. From personal perspective, it was the best part of my summer! Being able to learn from such a wide variety of choreographers is not only an honour, but also a pleasure to participate in. Though the studio was always at its highest temperature at that point, and I had never been so hot danc ing at the studio, as I danced throughout that week, I always found myself coming home to show my parents all the neat dances and moves we had learned that week. Not only have I had the experience to be a dancer at Durham Dance Centre, but I have also had the privilege to be a dance teacher’s assistant through the recreational program. This has truly been an honour, for the passion within the studio truly lies within the recreational program. As an assistant I have been given the opportunity to be a role model to many danc- ers. Even though it was a job, being an assistant was a reward- ing experience as well as a lot of fun. I was able to help the teachers with small choreography and even at holidays I was given the opportunity to create my own dances for the kids, to show to their parents for the holiday performances—a tradi- tion at Durham Dance Centre. As an assistant I was given the opportunity to dance onstage with the various classes that I assisted in for Durham Dance’s year-end recital. This recital, held at the beautiful Markham Theatre, is always the best time of the year. Tammy always puts on a great show, full of lights and talented dancers right down to the age of three. The four consecutive shows of the recital, truly demonstrate the family that lives within the walls of Durham Dance Center. When the show is coming to a close, and the grand fi nale is approaching its end, and every single dancer in the studio is present on that stage, as well as Tammy herself, when the music ends, I know that no matter where life takes me, Durham Dance Centre will always be my home away from home. Through all this, I have to say that it could not have been done without my parents. They chose to send me to Durham Dance when I was seven years old. At 18 years of age, 11 years later, I am able to say that I am glad they sent me to Durham Dance. Even talking to them today, they still say that they wouldn’t have changed a single thing. My parents have supported me throughout my journey of dance and I thank them for that. Whether it was the constant cheering at multiple competitions, seeing my Dad backstage before every routine or having my mother constantly change me from costume to costume, they have always been there for me. Not only have my parents been there to help me through the world of dance, but I must also thank one very important person who made it all possible — Tammy Roberts. Tammy has developed a studio that welcomes anyone and everyone. She is truly an inspiring woman and dance teacher, and I am glad to have had the pleasure to dance at her studio. Over the years, I have grown to trust and confi de in her, in all aspects of life and dance, and everything she has taught me, everything that I have experienced being a part of her studio, will not only remain a memory for me but will aid me in my life. At Durham Dance Centre, I have learned that hard work carries you far, and that dis- cipline will aid me in the life I intend to lead. Through dance, I have realized that passion is the reason behind all success and without passion I cannot truly be myself. As I am now 18 years old, I am off to university in the fall, taking a four-year program in Life Sciences. I hope to eventually go to medical school and I can no longer dance at Durham Dance Centre. However, there is not one day that passes where I do not think about the memories that were created within the walls of the dance studio. All that I have learned — not only from my fellow teammates but also from my teachers — will be carried with me for the rest of my life. Durham Dance Centre offers classes in jazz, tap, ballet, pointe, acro, hip-hip, musical theatre, lyrical, pilates, kin- derdance and moms and tots. Whether you thrive to take a tap class or simply to have fun and be with friends, Durham Dance Centre offers something for everyone. 2007 Ajax Pickering2007 Ajax Pickering fall registrationfall registration • Advertising Feature • Advertising Feature Tarana Dance SchoolTarana Dance School Contact: Geeta or Premika at 905-683-5827 or 905-683-1519 Indian Classical & Filmi Dances Supportive • Non-competitive • Fun Students from 5 years & up Annual dance recital Special ladies dance class Incorporating gentle Yoga & Belly Dance || || || .%7ä6IEWä0ROGRAMSä ä2EGISTERä/.,).% .%7ä6IEWä0ROGRAMSä ä2EGISTERä/.,).% 4HEô/NE 3TOP &AMILYô,EISUREô3HOP 7EVEGOT SOMETH I N G &U N FO RT H E 7 H O L E &AMILY Looking for Leisure? They admit willingly that once your kids arrive at Planet Gym- nastics they won’t want to leave. Now in its seventh year in Pickering and third year in Whitby, Planet Gymnastics is a recreational facility that of- fers gymnastic classes where kids can have fun, get active and workout their minds. And now is the time to register for fall classes. Shawn, who runs the facilities with his wife Denise, graduated from Seneca College’s Professional Coaching program, with a concentration on beginner and advanced gymnastics. He has been a professional gymnastics coach for over 18 years and has trained many champion athletes. Through his studies he discovered the benefi ts of gymnas- tics training for kids. Planet Gymnastics offers a variety of classes, seven days a week, with something for kids as young as 18 months and programs for teens and adults. The ‘Parent and Tot Program’, for example, is for kids between the ages of 18 months to 35 months and is a great opportunity for you to have fun and engage in gymnastics with your child in a unique environment. This class is a great way to improve your child’s physical ability as well as their social skills and runs seven times daily during the week and four times daily on weekends. ‘Kindergymnastics’ offers a one-hour, weekly class full of fun activities, games and circuits that require preliminary gymnastic skills for children aged three to four years. In this program they will improve their balance, strength and fl exibility and will gain their self-confi dence. The ‘Recreational Program’ is for kids age fi ve right through to teenagers. It progresses through the CANGYM recreational system, which includes all of the gymnastic events. Fully qualifi ed instructors ensure that the skills are learned properly before your child advances to the next level. New to Planet Gymnastics this year is the Teen Gym pro- gram and Adult program. These two hour classes are avail- able once a week for students to focus on specifi c areas that they would like to improve. For dancers, cheerleaders, and for kids who are just full of energy, Planet Gymnastics offers ‘Tumble and Bounce’ trampoline classes. This two-hour class is fi lled with lots of energy, bouncing and fun in which they learn basic tum- bling skills such as front and back handsprings, somer- saults, twisting and many other interesting skills. Planet Gymnastics features a three-storey play centre with a separate ball pit and specialty training equipment for tod- dlers. They also have a 40-foot tumbling trampoline, plus equipment that is made especially for kids as well as all the traditional gymnastics equipment such as uneven bars, rings, single bars and balance beams. Children should enroll in September but can be enrolled at any time throughout the season (pending availability), our classes run throughout the school year and we fi nish up the season with a special gold medal presentation to all children held each June. It’s a great way to keep the kids active in a secure air-conditioned environment. Gymnastics promotes the ABCs of athleticism – agility, balance, coordination and speed and without these basic movement skills a child will have diffi culty participating in any sport. ”Our kids, Kayla and Justin, have been attending your gymnastics programs for the past few years. The dynamic husband and wife team, Breanne and Jeff Wong opened the doors of their Westney Road studio on August 28, 2006 with Ajax Mayor Steve Parrish cutting the ribbon. Their mission: “To change the face of dance in Durham; inspiring one child at a time!” More than 350 dancers and fami- lies say: “Yes, they have!” In their inaugural year, Dance Inc. was selected by the News Advertiser’s Reader’s Choice Awards as “Best Dance Studio.” Dance Inc. has expanded their premises to include three spacious studios, introduced popular “Boys Only” Hip Hop classes on Friday evenings, and has conquered the com- petitive dance scene, winning top choreography, overall awards, and individual dance scholarships to Toronto, New York and L.A. along with many more. The year culminated with sold out dance shows showcasing all of their dancers, recreational and competitive, in a fast-paced dance review “Ev- erybody Dance Now”! Dance Inc.’s second year commences August 20, with the Impact Dance Workshop featuring stars of FoxTV’s So You Think You Can Dance: Ryan Rankine, Jimmy Arguello, Jessi Peralta, Ricky Palomino, and Hairspray’s Shawn Byfi eld among other talented faculty to inspire the dancers. Come check out their booth at Pickering Town Centre to view some highlights of this amazing week. If you want to dance in Durham, this is the place to be! Dance Inc. offers cost-effective classes in all dance disciplines ages three to adult in recreational and competitive capacities. There is a program for everyone whether you are dancing for fun or fi tness. The atmosphere is positive and encouraging for dancers at all levels and their faculty brings personal commitment and expertise to each and every class. Dance Inc. is fi rmly committed to the philosophy that a dancer’s education should consist of two things: the fi rst is excellent precise training and the second is to grow and perform as an individu- al. Their program is designed specifi cally to meet these needs. Each class challenges the dancers to improve and master the basic skills and positions to become a good dancer. In addition, Dance Inc. offers many opportunities to perform, to advance, and most importantly to grow as an individual, and to become a great dancer. Dance is about in- dividual progress and feeling the satisfaction and self esteem that evolves with attaining one’s goal. It is about being better each time not about being the best all the time. As directors, Jeff and Bre- anne’s pas- sion is dance and they are honoured to be entrusted with the artis- tic training of all their dancers. Jeff and Breanne will host an open house week, sharing their love of dance and infectious energy August 28 to August 31st, where you can try a free class and register for their 2007/8 season. A/P PAGE 16 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 19, 2007 Dance class and the lessons learned... There is a special relationship that can blossom between a child and their fi rst teacher. I have had the great fortune to experience that bond with countless young children over the past 20 years. They tell me their stories, their secrets, and their dreams. They tell me they love me and I reply with all honesty that I love them too! I have had Barbie dolls and stuffed animals named after me! I have not achieved great wealth doing this job, but I am so rich in so many other ways. Children and (especially?) teens, often require more than just the teaching of skills and technique. Nurturing, caring and listening become crucial parts of the role of dance teacher. There is a wonderful sense of accomplishment when they perfect that pirouette, but no less is the joy and satisfaction we feel when they win a public speaking contest or land the lead in the school play. We had 8 beautiful graduates from the studio this year. Only 1 intends to pursue dance as a career. What did the other 7 take from their 14 plus years at The Dance Experi- ence? Grace, poise, discipline, confi dence, fantastic posture and wonderful, positive memories. When you enroll your 3 - 5 year old in a dance class, you are probably not envision- ing the possibility of a future of multiple classes per week, rhinestone necklaces and dance competitions, but it is worth examining. The attitude toward competition can defi nitely refl ect the entire outlook of the studio. Competitive dance can be a wonderful thing. It can encourage us all to be our best, it develops a sense of belonging to a team, and it can teach us how to win and lose with grace and dignity. Com- petitions also expose us to all of the great work that other dance studios are doing. These things are wonderful, but so are family vacations at March break, breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day, schoolwork & outside activities, and being involved in the community. At The Dance Experience, we strive to keep a healthy balance and put families fi rst. I am very proud of the amazing accomplishments of this years’ competitive team, but I am even more proud of all of the community services that the studio performed. In November we participated in the Gala opening of the Winter Festival of Lights, and that same piece later won an arts competi- tion in support of the Greenbelt. In December we performed “Christmas” dances for elementary school children and se- nior citizens, and we were part of the Santa Claus Parade. In the spring we entertained at a fundraiser in support of Tania’s Place, and did 2 “tours” of hospitals and retirement homes. In June we danced at the Waterfront Festival. Serving the community is just one of the life lessons we strive to pass on to our students. From the fi rst day of class at 3 or 4 years of age our dancers are learning about listening, following direc- tions, taking turns, accepting others, and of course, the joy of movement! At The Dance Experience, we have produced some amaz- ing dancers – but raising happy, healthy students with great attitudes is our crowning achievement and by far our greatest success. A 10 week, 40 minute session- on real ice- we charge $125.00, which includes the GST. Our real ice beginner 30-minute program, as well as our synthetic 30-minute program costs $115.00, which includes the GST. We try to keep our costs lower so that all family members can participate. We at Laurie’s Learn To Skate think our synthetic surface is by far the best surface for beginner skaters. It takes away the need for any skate aids or a parent’s hand, In fact, the confi dence and balance the child gains can be visible in 30 minutes of stepping onto the surface. Why not make the fi rst experience enjoyable? The children will be in a warm room, which also benefi ts the parents. No cold seats! We also have very fl exible hours to accommodate both stay at home and working parents. We installed this surface in January 2000, before that we ran a Parent and Tot program on real ice. Sometimes, we would spend the fi rst four classes just trying to get the children to stand alone and take steps with the parent’s help. On our synthetic surface, your child will learn how to go forward, backwards, stopping and gliding, all within the fi rst four weeks. All of this will be accomplished without the use of skate aids or parental assistance. Incorporating practice on the real surface will aid in progress as well. We have a great student/teacher ratio, which is 6-1. We feel this gives the child more time with the instructor. Consistency helps a child as well, so we try to have the same instructor for the full 10 weeks. Our instructors can be ringette players, fi gure skaters or hockey players and must go through our training program before a permanent job is offered. Our program is unique, therefore a set lesson plan is prepared and must be followed. I personally oversee the groups to ensure standards are met. Our real ice program offers a variety of levels. For the children who have just fi nished a synthetic class, we offer a beginner class on the real ice surface. The real ice program has adult beginner and advanced, preschool, school age, recreational fi gure skating and hockey skill classes. We arrange our groups according to age and skill level. Most importantly, we want your child to learn how to skate and to have fun doing it. A/P PAGE 18 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 19, 2007 The recent success of So You Think You Can Dance has shone a spotlight on the art of dance and its impact on the young girls and boys involved. This television show has seen a record number of dancers express interest in furthering their knowledge and training in the art. The dancers featured on this show have become international stars and have been thrust to the forefront of the entertainment industry as role models, idols, and mentors for young dancers. Last week, Jacqueline’s School of Dance hosted a sum- mer intensive program. As the television show was winding down, the staff f asked the dancers to vote for their favourite dancer among the fi nal four. JSOD chose Sabra Johnson as their favourite and she ended up actually winning the com- petition — this tiny powerhouse had been training for only four years. In thinking about why our dancers voted Sabra as their favourite, it became obvious that Sabra represented so much more than advanced technical skills and ability. This particular dancer illustrated the signifi cant concept that dancing with your feet is one thing, but dancing with your heart is another. This notion is of immense importance to the instructors and choreographers at JSOD, and the fact that our dancers had recognized this facet of dance as the most important was truly touching. The talented artists and choreographers featured on So You Think You Can Dance are wonderful ambassadors for the world of dance. JSOD is proud to have a mentoring program of its own to instill passion, dedication, and inspiration in all of its dancers. “We are so lucky to have the opportunity to mentor our students in whatever direction they wish to pursue.” The school has had the wonderful pleasure of watching one of its eldest students, Lia Murphy, grow from a three-year- old ballerina into a 21-year-old star choreographer. “All of us at JSOD have had the opportunity to aid Lia in her technical, creative, and personal development for the better part of her dance career.” Over the past few years, Lia has been training at York University in their dance program. She has also been one of our most appreciated and talented instructors. This past year, she choreographed a senior tap line. She did not hesitate to pour herself into the endeavour, throwing all her creative and technical talent into choreographing an incred- ible routine. The routine entitled, We Both Reached for the Gun, garnered the largest number of awards ever received for one routine at JSOD, earning over $3,000 in scholarships, high scores at all competitions, two diamond dance offs and the “Most Entertaining” award. Not only was the number a technical success and visually spectacular, it put the spotlight on Lia as an up-and-coming choreographer extraordinaire. “We feel nothing but pride and genuine joy for Lia.” JSOD takes particular steps to ensure that each dancer feels as though they are being guided in the direction they wish to pursue in the dance world. Whether a dancer wants to take a weekly class to learn the basics, dabble in dance as an alter- native to other after-school activities, or pursue it as a life- long passion, JSOD has a support system in place for each dancer. Through training and the promotion of personal val- ues, each dancer has the opportunity to exceed their potential and shine onstage. “We are currently mentoring a number of students that have expressed continued interest in taking their dancing to new levels, to perform and choreograph pro- fessionally, and to pass on their love of the art onto younger dancers.” JSOD’s most recent success story has been that of their eldest male dancer, Jadel. Enrolled in dance lessons at age seven, Jadel’s strengths lie in his presence onstage and his warmth as a role model for younger dancers. Recipient of Mr. Teen Dance at the national fi nals competition this past July, Jadel earned a scholarship at one of our regional com- petitions to attend a convention in Los Angeles. He was also given the opportunity to train in many styles and work with choreographers from So You Think You Can Dance. This week-long experience inspired him to pursue a career in dance, and his newfound expertise earned him a spot as the hip-hop specialist at JSOD’s Summer Intensive. “We are so proud of Jadel and his accomplishments. We are confi dent that he will continue to achieve success in both his personal and professional endeavours and we will not hesitate to stand behind him as a constant source of encouragement and op- portunity.” One of our dancers encountered a major setback this when she fell and severely broke her leg. Although this was a set- back in her competitive season, Jhonna never missed a mo- ment of the rest of the year. Less than a month after her fall, Jhonna was back onstage making guest appearances with a crutch in hand at JSOD’s year-end showcase. Her love for dance never faltered, and the minute her cast came off she was back in the studio, attempting to do whatever she could back to her normal training schedule. Jhonna never once asked “Why me?” and she gave her all in support of her teammates for the rest of the season. JSOD’s mentoring program strives to positively touch the lives of our dancers, so that in return, they touch the lives of others. Jacqui Willis grew up dancing at the studio and is an excellent example of the results of their mentoring pro- gram. Jacqui was deeply interested in pursuing academics after high school and moved to Kingston to study history and education at Queen’s University. Jacqui now runs the Queen’s Dance Club, which is the largest recreational club on campus with over 600 members. She is also entering her second year as the head choreographer for the Vogue Char- ity Fashion Show, a spectacular production that raises about $25,000 per year for local charities. The staff at JSOD is committed to serving as role models for every dancer. “We pride ourselves on providing special- ized programs for every dancer, supporting them personally while developing their artistic skill. We believe each dancer’s potential is endless, and push each of our students to pour their entire soul into each class. We are also deep believers in the idea that any extracurricular activity is benefi cial to the success of a child.” If dance interests your child as an ex- tra-curricular activity we welcome you to visit Jacqueline’s School of Dance. She would never have guessed that, in her parent’s basement, with fi ve students, in what was the small town of Pickering that she could have started what is now, 35 years later, so successful, and whose alumni are currently performing, choreographing, and teaching all across Canada and the U.S. What is the secret to this success? “The teachers,” says Denise. “A dance studio is only as good as the ability of its teaching staff. It is our teachers who create the friend- ly atmosphere that makes it easier for the children to learn.” Denise started teaching at age 14, when her teacher became sick and she helped out at the studio. When she was 16, she received her fi rst qualifi cation as a teacher in tap and be- came a member of the B.A.T.D. Denise now holds a full life membership in Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Modern. She is a founding member of BATD competition and sits on the Internal Committee Board for the Toronto district. “For 18 years Canada’s Wonderland pro- duced a large dance show for the park. Our dancers were hired every year. A record un- precedented by any other dance studio in Ontario,” proclaims Denise. Every year stu- dents of the DLDA complete their teaching qualifi cations and many of them have opened dance studios or teach for other studios. A large percentage of the dance teachers now teaching in Pickering/Ajax are alumni’s of Denise’s, a fact that she is very proud of. “At a recent dance competition that we attended 13 out of the 23 dance teachers there were students on mine. It was one of my proudest moments,” Denise explains. Denise teaches and choreographs every age from three and up. Rarely is there a competi- tive year that she does not receive a choreog- rapher’s award. She has choreographed for La Senza, Brown’s Shoes, the CNE, Eluck Productions, Sick Kids Foundation, Diabe- tes Association, Carol Forest Productions and the Eaton’s Centre. “I love that these shows give my young students an opportu- nity to experience the professional stage,” Denise says. For the fi rst 14 years of the DLDA, De- nise was the only teacher. By this time her advanced students were now becoming qualifi ed BATD teachers themselves. Denise chose the best and Suzie and Wendy became the fi rst faculty members of the Denise Les- ter Dance Academy. Suzie began her dance training at age three when she became one of the fi rst students of the DLDA. Her talent was apparent right from the start. She competed in her fi rst solo at age fi ve and a mere 10 years later was one of the youngest dancers hired for Canada’s Wonderland. From there Suzie’s career skyrocketed. She danced for Wonderland for four years, two of those years as dance captain and has continued to choreograph, adjudicate and assist with their audition tour. Suzie choreographed the Wonderland Nick- elodeon Parade last year and this year her work can be seen daily on the main stage in “Twistin to the 60’s”. She travelled and per- formed through out Northern Canada for the Canadian Armed Forces tour for Canadian troops and for the United Nations in Egypt, Cypress, Israel and Germany. Her television experience spans commercials, T.V. series and music videos, has been “Robin Wil- liams” foot double in Death to Smoochie and has choreographed such greats as Aretha Franklin, the late James Brown, Erika Badu, John Goodman, Dan Akroyd and Wil- son Pickett. Suzie has done industrials for Toyota, Sunoco, General Electric, Digital Electronics, and Word Book Encyclopedia. She was also a dancer for Shania Twain and Bobby Curtola. Suzie is an unbelievable teacher who brings the best out in her students every time. Rarely do Suzie’s competitive routines not achieve overall high scores. She believes in giving the best class possible each and every week always adding new challenges. “My students work so hard for me. It touches my heart when I work with the kids and they give so much of themselves.” Wendy settled in Pickering at the age of 12 and began her formal dance training with Denise. This past year marked Wendy’s 25th anniversary as a member of the DLDA. Wen- dy’s talent shone through and she became a valued member of the studio’s competitive team. Her competitive and examination suc- cesses were many — receiving overall high scoring awards at local and international competitions across Canada and the U.S. She entered the professional fi eld quite young, performing for Canada’s Wonderland and the CNE. Wendy is still performing, and is a dancer for the “Viva Las Vega” show at the Old Scott House and for the “New- comers Show”. Wendy performed for the Auto Show, in South Pacifi c, go-go danced for Industrials and for the “Disco Knights” Disco band, was part of the Spirit Walk for Pickering Museum, a member of the Peli- can Players and many functions for the city of Pickering. She performed and choreo- graphed Fashion shows for Cougar Boots, the Women’s Show, Weekenders, Food Expo and many Mall Promotions. She was also a judge for the Mini Miss Canada Pageant, worked with the North York Children’s Op- era, choreographed for La Senza and Lola and Quinn from Zoey 101. Wendy is a passionate, fun loving teacher who takes great pride in the accomplish- ments of her students. Whether she is teach- ing a class for beginners, working with the youngest competitive dancers or the most advanced, her choreography is always in- ventive and entertaining. “I Love them all,” she says. “It doesn’t matter the age. When you see somebody trying a move week after week and then fi nally get it! It’s a beautiful thing.” Shannon Bruce was another Denise Lester “baby” starting at the studio at the age of four. As a little girl it was her dream to teach for her studio, by the age of 16 her dream had come true. Now, 10 years later Shannon has students who now dream about being a teacher like her. She is a qualifi ed BATD teacher in Ballet, Tap, Modern and Acro. As a competitor she was unbeatable winning overall high scores time and time again. She qualifi ed for the National All American Dance Invitational Tour in Ha- waii, won Miss Dance Elite International, was the semi fi nalist of “Dancer of the Year” in Las Vegas and was starred three times for the BATD ballet scholarships. Shannon continues to perform and choreo- graph professionally as well as teaching dance at DLDA, for other studios and in the school system. Her dance credits include perform- ing for music icon Cher’s end of tour party, four years at Canada’s Wonderland, Epcott Centre, the Auto Show, the DuMaurier Tour, and Fashion Cares by Mac Cosmetics. She has worked for Vision Entertainment, Carol Forest Prod., Janet Wagner, Gwen Bloom, and Karen Eluck. She choreographed for Brown’s Shoes, La Senza, Zoey 101, Sick Kids Hospital and a musical called Smile. Shannon is a remarkable teacher who knows how to make every child feel like they belong in her class. “Dance class is to be enjoyed. I love to see the kids beaming faces as they bounce into the studio, excited about their class.” Shannon’s classes are fun and high energy, and her experience as an acro teacher is unmatched. There are a lot of dancers who have now achieved their aerials and back handsprings thanks to Shannon. Tammy is of course another little girl whose mom brought her to the DLDA when she was three not realizing what an impact that decision would make in Tammy’s life. Tammy’s ballet has always been fl awless, her exam results always an honours and she was starred for a ballet scholarship every year from grade three and up. Mix this beautiful technical ability with her strength as an acro dancer and you get a beautiful teacher for any lucky student to emulate. Tammy teaches all of the Beginner and Junior Acro classes and has given many young dancers the techni- cal base that they need to achieve the crowd pleasing tricks that Tammy is known for. She holds her qualifi cations in Ballet, Tap, Mod- ern and Acro. Tammy has worked her way to her fi fth year at York University by teach- ing for DLDA and many other Toronto area studios. She has performed for the Breast Cancer Foundation, the Toronto Zoo, Eluck Productions and for many Industrials. “I met most of my very close friends at dance class when I was a child and we continued to dance together until we went to University. Those are years that I will never forget. Now it is very cute when I watch my students making new friends in class,” Tammy says. Alvin started his dance training at age 16 when he started dating Suzie (now his wife and mother of his four children). He was a natural, he started competing one year and working professionally the next. He per- formed for the Sears fashion tour, PCS Plus in Montreal, Cougar fashions, Kinney fashions and the TD Bank. He danced for the tele- vised NHL awards and Teen Beat Challenge. Alvin works a lot with the boys at the studio. Choreographing their hip-hop numbers and teaches the lift classes. Alvin is presently a Registered Massage Therapist, an Osteo- path, Cranial Sacral therapist, Acupunctural and Nutritional consultant. He is the owner of the Centre for Healing and Personal Po- tential right here in Pickering. Dance is his passion “Dance is a large part of my life. It is engrained in my soul,” Alvin says. Brandi started as a student with Denise at the age of three and now, at 20, is the young- est member of the Denise Lester teaching staff. Last year Brandi’s choreography con- sistently won fi rst place and highest senior group of the competition twice. Since dance is a visual art a student will always dance with the same style as her teacher. Anyone who has seen Brandi dance would love to look just like her on stage. She has a beauti- ful breadth of motion, her extension is awe inspiring and her style so smooth. Brandi’s own competitive years found her to be unbeatable. She won high scoring solo and highest mark of the competition both as an amateur and as a professional, many times choreographing her own routines. She has been awarded “Miss Star Catcher” Out- standing Technique award, Best Emotional Execution, Adjudicators choice awards, and even Prom Queen and Miss Congeniality at her school prom. Brandi has performed in fashion shows, numerous industrials and as a soloist for the Sick Kids Hospital Founda- tion. She is currently a third year dance major at York University and is a qualifi ed BATD teacher in Ballet, Tap, Modern and Acro. “I love the opportunities that dance has given to me. It has allowed me to work at something that I truly love to do,” she says. “Helping our students achieve a goal is very reward- ing.” Your child too could be taught by these wonderful teachers. The award winning cre- ative staff of the Denise Lester Dance Acade- my would love the opportunity to share their love of dance with your child. The Denise Lester Dance Academy offers classes for children three years old and up, from begin- ner to advanced in Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Pointe, Acro and Hip Hop. Sure, it is only August, but time does have a tendency to fl y, espe- cially where children and summer are concerned. School bells will soon be ringing, and your child will be heading off to school. So why not help them prepare to return to the world of academia? Kids can shift into the right gear for learn- ing, with a little help, even before they head back-to-school. Here’s a short list to get your family started: • Start the morning off right. Begin by waking your kids up at what will be their regular morning wake-up time. If they don’t have an alarm clock, why not get them their own and let them take responsibility for waking up in the morning? • Have a good breakfast. Re- search has shown us time and again that a nutritious breakfast can give kids the energy they need to be mentally alert all day. Put away the sugary cereals and make a healthy breakfast part of your daily habit. • Choose clothing the night be- fore. Avoid those last-minute searches for her green socks, or his favourite cap. If you are selecting the wardrobe, give your child a few options and let them choose. They’ll feel more in-charge of the process when they think that they are making the decisions. • Turn off the TV and pick up a book. Start creat- ing a homework routine now and help them develop a love of reading during the summer that will pay-off during the school year. Kids are natural mimics so when they see you reading, they are more likely to pick up a book and spend quality time with the writ- ten word. • Play board or word games. Strategies used dur- ing game play can help young minds learn to focus. Discuss your strategies to help them see your internal thought processes. • Bedtimes. Just as important as a regular morning routine is a reliable bedtime. Kids are often too busy playing to recognize that they are tired. Sure, putting them to bed early may not make you the most popular parent, but their growing bodies will thank you, especially with the earlier wake up time! Visit www.oxfordlearning.com for more helpful tips on how to get ready for the coming school year. If your child is uneasy about returning to school and all that it entails, call Oxford today, in Ajax 905-683- 6660 or Pickering 905-420-3141, to learn how to help your child return to school prepared and ready to learn, not just for the fi rst few weeks of classes, but for the entire school year. On fi rst impres- sion, it looks like an old home in the middle of the Village. But when you enter the building and spend a moment of your time you immediately realize what Durham Music has to offer. With over 1,400 students and 50 musical instructors, Durham Music has been producing wonderful sounds in the Ajax area since 1987 and has 20 teaching stu- dios including their second location at 92 Church Street south. Teaching has made Durham Music the largest private music school in the area and also in Ontario. There are a wide variety of musical lessons that are offered in- cluding guitar, piano, drums, violins, all woodwind in- struments and singing. Guitar instructors Ray Hickey Jr., Scott Holyk, and Aaron Bales are pleased to teach with only the fi nest equipment such as Fender, Yama- ha, Roland and Gibson. The staff and instructors at Durham Music would like to express their complete gratitude to the Dur- ham Region for voting them number one for two 2006 Reader’s Choice Awards in the categories of Musical Instruction and Musical Instrument Store. They have been past winners of these awards and many others, so it comes as no surprise that they’ve won again for their excellence in providing Durham with musical instruction. Durham Music is the recipient of several other awards including the Board of Trade Business Award, many News Advertiser and Durham Parent Readers’ Choice Awards and the International Year of Volunteer Award. Ajax guns for soccer glory in the U.K. Under-14s return with gold, bronze AJAX — It was a case of the stu- dent teaching the teacher. The Ajax Gunners boys’ under- 14 team travelled recently to Eng- land and Scotland, the birthplace of soccer, to play in two tourna- ments. The Gunners took the attitude that if you’re going to travel that far, you might as well win, so they re- turned with gold and bronze med- als. The two-week tour started in Shrewsbury, England, where Ajax opened with a 2-0 win over the Scottish junior professional team from Gretna. It didn’t take long for the Gun- ners to adjust to the British style of play, as they beat TNS Academy of Wales and, in a beautifully played game, tied eventual tournament winner Swansea. The lone Ajax de- feat came in the semi-finals against Oldham Athletic. In the bronze-medal game against the host Shrewsbury Town, strong defense and midfield work by Skyler Thomas, Darnell Parris, Josh Marinelli, Kevin Britton, Ryan Lyn, Keenan Williams, Lucas Guer- riero and Scott Williams, coupled with the acrobatic goaltending of Quincy Daniels, kept Shrewsbury off the scoresheet. The game had to be settled on penalty kicks, with the Gunners prevailing. It was off to Edinburgh, where Ajax was placed in the tougher under-15 division. Despite this, Ajax went undefeated, beating Ed- inburgh City, Cowdenbeath and Barnsley F.C. That put Ajax in the finals, where they faced Cowdenbeath. Matt Dias was a wall in goal, keeping the opposition from scor- ing in a scoreless first half. In the second half, the offense of Sean Claude Lawson, Errol Whit- tle-Mcdonald, Kristian Lee-Him, Sebastian Arangio, Omari Morris, James Berry, Dylan Nolivos and Boyd Reid kicked into high gear, netting three unanswered goals to give the Gunners the title. Ajax sits in top spot in the East Division of the Ontario Youth Soc- cer League. Coaching the Gunners are Tom Croft, Jim Webster and Mike Croft. Ajax under-eights make Impact at Niagara Falls on way to win AJAX — The tournament titles keep coming for the Ajax Impact boys’ under-eight soccer team. Fresh off a crown in Bramp- ton, the Impact took part in the 45th annual A.C. Douglas Rep Soccer Tournament in Niagara Falls last week. Five wins later, the Ajax crew was coming home with championship trophies. Facing the home-town Niagara Falls Titans in the finals, the Im- pact came out flying, scoring a pair of markers on “two of the best head-ball goals I have ever seen for any age,” said head coach Scott Hardie. The goal scorers were Nathaniel Sadler and Joshua Cammalleri, on precision corner kicks by Darryn Commissiong. After that, Ajax ran away with the championship on goals by Adrian Martini, Commissiong, Sadler and Matthew Dean, for a 6-0 final. Dalton Clark preserved the shutout. In its first game, Ajax faced a tough Leaside Tigers team and came away with a 4-0 victory. Commissiong, Nick Sims, Cam- malleri and Kevin Stiles had the markers, while Clark had the shutout. Brantford City was next and the Impact boys ran off to an 8-1 win. Commissiong, Sims, Sadler and Jordan Hardie potted two goals each. Collingwood Comets provided little opposition, as Ajax ham- mered out a 10-0 victory. Com- missiong and Sadler each netted hat tricks, while Martini potted two goals, Sims and Clark added singles. Dean and Clark shared the shutout. The Impact was through to the semi-finals to face the Bolton Wanderers. Ajax wasn’t going to be beaten and came away with a 3-0 win. Cammalleri, Stiles and Commissiong scored and Clark again registered the shutout. In its five games, the Impact scored 31 goals and gave up only one. Stingy defense was provided by Stefan Palatsidis and Austin Werner. Nicholas Cirone and An- tonio DeFilippis were absent. The team is coached by Scott Hardie, assisted by Darren Com- missiong. The manager is Susan Hardie, trainer Marco Werner and assistant manager Karen Werner. Pickering mite selects win third tourney PICKERING — They’re mites, but they’re mighty. The Pickering Prowlers mite boys’ select baseball team brought home the gold from a tournament for the third straight time. This time it was in Woodbridge, where the Prowl- ers went undefeated in five games to claim the title. In a rematch with Topham Park in the finals, Pickering fired on all cylinders in the 13-8 victory. The game was a two- hour, seven-inning marathon. Jerett Johns and Nathan Volpe were stellar on the mound. Josh Kelly belted his first tourna- ment home run. Pickering had to play five back-to-back games in one day. They opened with a 20-5 pasting of the host Woodbridge team. Next up was Topham Park and the Prowlers won by a run, with timely base stealing by Colton Robinson and Scott Henning. Richmond Hill was next and it provided little opposition as Pickering won 22-0 behind great pitching, an awesome offence and stingy defence. Milliken was next and again Pickering won easily, 21-3. During the tournament, Pickering was helped on the mound by the pitching of Mitch- ell Noble and Colton Robinson. This weekend, Pickering plays host for the provincials playdowns. durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 40 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 19, 2007 Investment Corner An information guide for fi nancial planning Investment Corner prints every other Sunday.Investment Corner prints every other Sunday.
