The female victim was followed for some distance, even after she tried evasive moves to lose the other motorist, until the confrontation ended with the arrival of officers who arrested the man, Durham po- lice said. When the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) initiated the 407 East Environmental Assessment (EA) study in February 2005, MTO information officer Will MacKenzie said the biggest question was where the highway extension would go. “We had a lot of people that were quite anxious to find out,” he said. MTO released the technically preferred route at a series of public information centres that began on June 26 in Clarington. “We had to look at all the fac- tors, the environmental factors, the natural environment, the social and economic and cultural factors and that helped us narrow it down to the actual technically recommended route,” Mr. MacKenzie said. “There can still be some minor tweaking here and there but... this is the route that will be going forward to the ministry of the environment for ap- proval.” The route, which affects between 600 and 800 property owners, has been mapped out from Brock Road in Pickering to Hwy. 35/115 as well as interchanges and the north-south connectors to Hwy. 401. “Over the next few weeks regis- tered letters will be going out to the impacted property owners advising them,” Mr. MacKenzie explained. “Then we can begin working with people on acquiring property. “We expect some people will be coming forward and saying, ‘look, I’d rather sell now and move on’’,” he said. In some areas MTO may just need a strip of land while for other prop- erties it may need the whole thing, according to Mr. MacKenzie. “We try to avoid cutting through the middle of farms, but there may be a few situations where that will happen and we will have to look at whether the farm will still be eco- nomically viable,” he said. “Unfortu- nately with something like this, you can never please everybody.” There is still a considerable amount of work to be done before it is ready to be submitted to the ministry of the environment, which is scheduled to happen in the fall of 2008. Fire crews attended the Lakeridge Road property and put out the blaze quickly. When the woman pulled over and changed direction, the suspect vehicle did the same, police said. It is alleged the suspect driver made a number of U-turns to continue the pur- suit, even as the woman called 911 to alert police of her plight. Police said that on two occasions the suspect vehicle was driven at the victim’s car, narrowly missing her and forcing her off the road, police said. As the rampage continued the suspect threw a frozen ice pack and several golf balls at the woman’s car, police said. The woman finally pulled into her driveway in Claremont only to be pur- sued further by a man who got out of his car and approached her, shouting obscenities while armed with a golf club, police said. He answered current market value will be paid and lands will be purchased, as they are needed. “We prefer to work on a negotiated basis and we try to work with people individually,” he said. “We do have the expropriation process as a last resort, but even there, people have protection that the market value must be paid and there is a number of safeguards in place.” As residents perused the plans at the information centre in Ajax on July 3 they expressed mixed feelings. Brian Rees and his wife Tracey live in Brooklin. Mr. Rees commutes into Toronto for work and sees the 407 ex- tension as a benefit, but has some con- cerns. “The overall route that has been cho- sen has some pluses and minuses,” Mr. Rees said. “I am kind of concerned that the 407 is separating Whitby and Brook- lin and adding a dividing line between the two.” Lorne Hardy has family farms run by his sons in the area of the 8th Concession and Mosport Road in Clarington. “We had one report it was going to come right through the middle,” Mr. Hardy said. He was pleased to see that the 407 will, in fact, miss his land. “We would rather not have it,” Mr. Hardy said. “Let someone else have the hassle.” Larry Kinnear, from Ashburn, said he was concerned that the Hwy. 407 would swing north of Hwy. 7 at Ashburn Road, but was relieved to see the plan has it swinging south. “There is 10-acre lots up there with a couple of farms, so that protects them,” Mr. Kinnear said. Suspect allegedly hit credit union in Uxbridge this year DURHAM — York police have arrested a man in connection with a string of bank robber- ies, including one at a Pickering CIBC. On Jan. 6, 2007, a man walked into Pace Savings and Credit Union on Brock Street West in Uxbridge with his face disguised, according to Durham Regional Police. He allegedly forced a cus- tomer against the cashier’s coun- ter while demanding money from the tellers. The tellers complied, and the suspect fled with an un- disclosed amount of cash. The suspect has also been charged with two other robberies in Durham, the first occurring at a CIBC on King Avenue West in Clarington on Oct. 6, 2006, and another at a CIBC on Kingston Road in Pickering on Dec. 9 of last year, according to Durham police. He faces charges in four bank robberies in York Region, including a PACE credit union in Stouffville on March 17. Police have also charged the suspect with two heists in Toronto and one in Peel Region. The man was arrested at his To- ronto workplace on Friday, June 22. York police say they worked closely with Toronto and Durham police to make the arrest. Following the bust, a Toronto home and a storage unit in the Malton area were searched, lead- ing to the recovery of a silver plastic toy handgun and other evidence. Money connected to the robberies has not been recov- ered, according to York police. Derek Mansfield, 32, of Toron- to, is charged with 10 counts of robbery and 10 counts of disguise with the intent to commit an in- dictable offence. He was sched- uled for a court appearance June 28. Bert Dejeet, who started his career with Durham College in 1977, died June 25 in Oshawa at age 67. In recent years, he also worked with the Univer- sity of Ontario Institute of Technology. A Nova Scotia native, Mr. Dejeet began his ca- reer with the college as de- partment head for its aca- demic and business pro- gram in the adult training division. Over the years, he’s also been the depart- ment head for the design, food and beverage man- agement program, chair- man of applied arts and, most recently, dean of the school of justice until his retirement. In 2006, he became a consultant with UOIT’s criminology, justice and policy studies department until this winter. Judy Moretton, Durham College’s acting vice-presi- dent of academic, worked with Mr. Dejeet for 15 years. He also visited her home once a week while en route to his cottage. “Really a genuine nice man, lots of fun, really quick with his wit,” said Ms. Moretton. She worked with him the entire time she was in management and Mr. Dejeet was somewhat of a mentor to her, she said. “Even though you were working, it was fun.” Along with being smart and having lots of good ideas, he was willing to investigate any suggestion made by faculty or support staff and, in many cases, make it happen. Making the school of justice a reality and being its founding chairman was probably one of his crown- ing achievements, she added. Mr. Dejeet was also ac- tive in the community, through groups including Big Brothers, the Kiwanis Club of Oshawa, and the Durham Region Police Services Board. A service was held at Durham College and UOIT’s Market Place Caf- eteria in the Gordon Willey Building, 2000 Simcoe St. N. in Oshawa on June 29 with a reception to follow. Beat the Heat Wave Man guilty of luring, assaulting teen By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Jurors have found a man who conned an Oshawa girl into a sex- ual encounter in a seedy motel guilty of sexual assault, luring and child pornog- raphy charges. Devindra “Dave” Dewkinandan, 26, was also found guilty Thursday of pos- session of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, relating to more than three ounces of marijuana discov- ered by Durham cops who searched his Mississauga home while investigating the sexual assault allegations. The verdict came shortly after 7 p.m., just hours after lawyers had made final submissions and Superior Court Justice Robert MacKinnon instructed jurors. Ju- rors aren’t allowed to comment on their deliberations, but the finding indicates they rejected Mr. Dewkinandan’s tes- timony that he believed he was engag- ing in sexual activity with a consenting adult. During the two-week trial jurors heard from the Oshawa teen, 14 at the time of the encounter. She said she’d com- municated with Mr. Dewkinandan in an online chat room and was convinced to meet him after he told her he was a mod- elling agent. Mr. Dewkinandan met the girl in January 2005 and took her to a $40 motel room where he took pictures and video of her naked and coached her dur- ing sex acts. Jurors viewed the video Mr. Dewkinandan made early in the trial. The victim testified she believed the man to be a modelling agent and said she disrobed and engaged in sex acts against her will. When he testified in his own defence Mr. Dewkinandan said he had discussed nude photography and sex acts with the girl prior to their photo session at the motel and that he believed her to be 18. Durham police began investigating after the mother of another Oshawa girl, a 16-year-old friend of the victim, be- came concerned about e-mail contact her daughter had with a man claiming to be a modelling agent. When cops armed with a search warrant burst into Mr. Dewkinandan’s room in his parents’ basement in April 2005, they seized the motel video and the marijuana, as well as $3,000 in cash. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for August. Warrant issued for card-skimming suspect DURHAM — An arrest warrant has been issued for a man suspected of tak- ing part in a debit card skimming opera- tion in Durham Region. Durham police are warning that 20- year-old Oleksandr Gubarev has a history of violence and is known to carry weap- ons. They’re advising anyone who knows of the man’s whereabouts to call police immediately. Mr. Gubarev is wanted on charges of fraud over $5,000 and failing to comply with terms of probation for his alleged involvement in the installation of a card-skimming device at an auto- mated teller machine in Pickering. He’s also wanted in Toronto and York Region, police said. The suspect is from Ukraine and speaks with a Russian accent. He’s 6-feet tall and 250 pounds with brown hair and green eyes. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Detective Jeff Caplan at 905-579-1520, ext. 5702 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, July 6, 2007 durhamregion.com Time for drivers to slow down If photo radar will help reduce speeding, then go for it N ow that two town hall meet- ings have taken place in Picker- ing, it’s evident a big concern for Pickering’s residents is controlling speeding cars. So far, 225 traffic deaths across Ontar- io have been reported this year, which is nearly 40 more than last year at this time. Take it from someone who drives from Toronto to Ajax each day for work, speeding is getting out of hand. There is so much madness on the roads that an- other means of controlling speed won’t hurt, and photo radar is a way to do this. Some are calling this The Summer of Speed, and something has to be done. People will not slow down on their own. Why? Because these types of accidents won’t happen to them? Wrong. The other day, somebody was actually rear- ended on Hwy. 401. On Canada Day, a husband and wife were left with serious injuries after a suspected street racer crashed into the back of their car. If people can take part in Road Watch, where residents can call in and report licence plates of offensive drivers to vol- unteers, which are eventually forwarded to the police, I don’t see why photo radar can’t be used. There has been much opposition to this type of operation. But why? It has to be for one reason: the people opposed don’t want to get caught. Otherwise, who cares? Some may say it’s sneaky, like a ‘Big Brother operation,’ or criticize the fact that they don’t get fair warning of pos- sibly being caught on camera. That’s basically admitting they speed and need warning in order to avoid being ticketed. Drivers who do get ticketed as a result were going over the legal speed limit and breaking the law. They deserve a ticket. Some say radar guns don’t work. They’re too easy to spot, and drivers have the chance to slow down before the photo is taken. Plus, they say, radio sta- tions will often alert drivers when radar is active. But you know what? That’s the point: they slow down. Some suggest increasing the speed limit on Hwy. 401 by 10 kilometres per hour. But that will probably just en- courage motorists to drive 10 kilometres faster. I do agree with many of the criti- cisms of photo radar because, overall, if people do slow down, they’re only doing it to avoid getting caught and receiving a ticket. Photo radar will not change the mentality of most drivers. But, in the end, if someone gets a ticket, chances are they’ll slow down next time. Speed- ing is getting too out of hand and if there is a possibility of changing that, I’m all for it. Kristen Calis’s column ap- pears every third Friday. E-mail kcalis@durhamregion.com. Kristen Calis staff writer LETTER TO THE EDITOR Schools need to keep sharing resources All for one and one for all. Not just a line from that classic novel, The Three Muske- teers, but it was the vision promoted when the University of Ontario Institute of Technology was created back in 2001 on the very same campus as its existing partner, the then 34-year- old educational facility, Durham College. The selling notion of UOIT, as it has come to be known, was that it would share some staff and, most importantly, a philoso- phy with Durham College resulting in a single facility that would be far more than the sum of its parts. Driven by a community eager to have its own university and pushed hard by DC president Gary Polonsky with a healthy as- sist by the provincial Tory government and finance minister Jim Flaherty, UOIT’s creation was formally announced in 2001 and it opened its doors to its first students in 2003. The shared vision has endured some growing pains over the past six years. First, founding UOIT president Gary Polonsky, who was at the controls of both schools in UOIT’s initial years, retired in 2006 after 18 years at Durham College and five years at UOIT. Mr. Polonsky was replaced, by necessity, by two new heads, Leah Myers at DC and Ron Bordessa at UOIT. And, two presidents, no matter how well they work together, are going to have differing visions and a narrow focus on what’s best for their own facilities. UOIT had to depend heavily on DC for financing, land, build- ings and more for a number of years, but as the university has grown, the need to lean on its college partner has lessened and its requirement for its own interests to be attended to has ex- panded. That’s why Mr. Bordessa wants his own chairman of the board, instead of sharing a single chairman for the boards of both post-secondary institutions. What do the inevitable changes mean for the students and staff affected by the expanding campus? The initial goal of com- bining nearly everything on one campus -- mindful that Dur- ham College has satellite campuses in other parts of the region -- was to share resources and allow students the opportunity to transfer between college and university. As long as those goals remain and students have the chance to get a full college and university experience on campus, the original plan of DC/UOIT will survive. What’s not needed are two entirely separate facilities that merely share the same geo- graphic footprint but very little else. Transit hike justified To the editor: I am disturbed over the grumbling over the fare increases with the Durham Region Transit system. Look at the comparison: GO Transit from Pickering to Os- hawa, adult monthly is $154, seniors, $94 and student $117, plus on top of that the 65-cent fare integration to a DRT bus after. I don’t mind paying the 25-cent increase as the DRT has made so many improvements. Just as long as they are improving the system, it is not a problem. For those who say I only travel within one town/city, well get your money’s worth out of your bus tickets and passes. Hey, you might even meet new friends. Anna Borchuk Ajax DURHAM — The search was lengthy, but the Durham Children’s Aid Society will have a new leader at the helm come Aug. 1 In January, former executive director James Dubray announced his retirement after 40 years of work in child welfare -- 12 of those as execu- tive director in Durham. Ms. Secord is a life-long resident of Durham Region and graduated in 1981 from Wilfrid Lau- rier University with a masters in social work. She has worked in the field of child welfare for 26 years and at Durham CAS since 1985, most recently as director of services. In her new role, Ms. Secord will be responsible for guiding the agency through a number of up- coming changes, including a major move, as the three current offices are consolidated into one new building in Oshawa and legislative changes under the Ministry of Children and Youth Ser- vices’ transformation agenda. Durham CAS is Ontario’s fourth largest Chil- dren’s Aid Society, with 380 staff members and a budget of $66 million. The society is mandated to provide child pro- tection services for Durham Region. It is gov- erned by a volunteer board of directors that is responsible for the appointment of the executive director, who oversees the operation of the soci- ety. Billboard JULY 6, 2007 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, July 6, 2007 PAGE 9 A/Pdurhamregion.com Terms of deal secret, lawyer says By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A settlement has been reached between the owner of the Oshawa Generals and creditors seeking more than $1 million in unpaid bills relating to con- struction of the new General Motors Cen- tre, lawyers for the parties told a Superior Court judge Tuesday. Justice Bruce Glass, who was scheduled to hear arguments on a motion for sum- mary judgment in the dispute, endorsed the agreement, details of which are being kept secret by the parties. “All the terms of the settlement are con- fidential,” said lawyer Kenneth Eccleston, who represents Cloke-Kirby Construction Ltd., the lead contractor hired to build training and dressing rooms, offices and retail space for the Oshawa Generals hock- ey team. Mr. Eccleston would not say if Cloke- Kirby and a number of subcontractors, who filed more than $1 million in liens on the City-owned property, have been paid, or if arrangements for payment have been made. Lawyers representing the City and Gens owner John Davies were also present in court in Whitby Tuesday. Cloke-Kirby had been seeking a court order to obtain money owed for the proj- ect, company principal Marc Carter said in an earlier interview. A frustrated Mr. Carter said on June 14 he had resorted to court action to pursue payment that’s been owed since work was completed in January. “Not a cent has changed hands and I’m getting more of the same old excuses I’ve been getting since December,” Mr. Carter said. The court proceedings and apparent settlement come more than a month after Mr. Davies vowed during an interview in mid-May -- also attended by Mr. Carter -- to come up with the money to pay contrac- tors even if he had to sell off other assets. In that interview Mr. Davies said construc- tion delays on the GM Centre, at Mary and Athol streets in downtown Oshawa, had pushed up the costs of work he hired Cloke-Kirby to do for the team’s space on the premises. He blamed the general contractor hired by the City and vowed to pursue a claim for what he said were more than $300,000 in cost overruns caused by the delays. City officials have insisted the munici- pality won’t intervene in the dispute. After 37 years as a Catholic educator, the Ajax principal who’s as “Irish as Paddy’s pig” is retiring. In a packed gymnasium decorated with four-leaf clovers, Ms. Snow recently said goodbye to her students and staff at Brother Andre Catholic School. “I’m feeling very mel- ancholy, very sad and very happy,” said Ms. Snow in her thick Irish accent, a green crown upon her head. “I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart... you made me the person that I am.” Ms. Snow came to Cana- da from Ireland in 1968 and began her career in educa- tion after graduating from To- ronto Teachers’ College. She spent 19 years with the To- ronto Catholic District School Board, where she taught at various elementary schools and was a primary consultant for six years. In 1989, she got a job with the Durham Catholic District School Board after moving to Whitby. Her time with it has included teaching at St. Theresa Catholic School in Whitby, being seconded to York University’s Faculty of Education as a course direc- tor, vice principal of St. James Catholic School in Ajax, prin- cipal of St. Anthony Daniel in Pickering and Mother Teresa in Ajax, and most recently, principal of Brother Andre Catholic School in Ajax. Ms. Snow said she comes excited to school each day. “But boys and girls, there comes a time when you have to leave to make room for more people to have jobs,” she added and thanked all the parents, students, and staff attending her farewell assembly. “So boys and girls, always keep a smile tucked in your pocket, when you see someone sad, pull it out.” She also reminded stu- dents to ask themselves, what would Jesus do, whenever they have a problem. Teacher Gilda Romano said that’s Ms. Snow’s favou- rite line. During the farewell assem- bly, students also sang for Ms. Snow, read an Irish blessing, presented her a red rose for each of her years in educa- tion, and prayed for her to have happiness wherever she goes. Ms. Snow said being in the education sector is challeng- ing, dynamic, energizing and, most of all, rewarding. “Kids just make your day,” said Ms. Snow in an inter- view, recalling some of the times students compliment- ed her on a sweater or said they heard her on the radio, referring to the announce- ment system. As a principal, Ms. Snow said it’s important to walk around the school because kids aren’t going to remem- ber you working behind a desk. She’s also learned from the people she’s worked with and is proud to see them grow in their careers. At 57 years old, Ms. Snow is going to enjoy this sum- mer off and go from there. Although retired, she wants to remain active in education and help out in the school board. She said she’ll miss the staff, working with the curric- ulum, and all those smiling kids saying ‘good morning’. Teacher Amanda Simcoe said working with Ms. Snow has been a positive experi- ence and has taught her that students need to know you care about them. “It’s not often you have a principal you’re really going to miss,” said Ms. Simcoe. Grade 7 student Merissa Lombardo said Ms. Snow has really changed the school a lot and did many good things. “She had a passion for kids and teaching and learning,” said Merissa, who’s been at different schools with Ms. Snow. Grade 5 student Samantha Mladek is also going to miss her. “She was always kind and understanding of what we did in the school,” said Sa- mantha, and recalled her vis- iting classes to see if students were OK. The Canadian Institute for Health Information noted child obesity has climbed dramatically in recent years. That’s why Girls Inc. is of- fering Steppingstones and Commit to be Fit, programs that allow girls to learn how to make good decisions re- garding healthy eating, and how to move more skillfully and confidently. Stepping- stones is for girls aged six to eight, and Commit to be Fit is for nine-to-11 year olds. Media and Me (for ages six to eight) and Media SMARTS (ages nine to 11) celebrate positive roles for girls in the media. They investigate dif- ferent types of media, and discover ways to overcome bias and tackle issues in the media such as diversity. The interactive and infor- mative programs run from July 9 to 13 in the commu- nity room at 1580 Kingston Rd. The $120 registration fee covers program costs and snacks. For more informa- tion or to register, call Tracey McCannell at 905-428-8111, visit www.girlsinc-dur- ham.org or e-mail girlsinc. durham@girls-inc.org. Make your dreams a reality with the help of Arnts Topsoil: The Landscape Supplier. Begin by visiting one of Arnts’ two large locations occupying 30 acres of outdoor space with everything for your landscaping needs. Through extensive displays, design brochures, installation videos, and knowledgeable staff, Arnts Topsoil provides the tools to help you create an outdoor space that surpasses your expectations. There are 10 basic steps to the installation of interlocking paving stones. The first step is to draw a diagram showing mea- surements, grade elevations, and proposed planters, steps, walls, and paving stone areas. A member of Arnts’ sales staff will help calculate the amount and cost of the materials for your project. The next step is to prepare the area by marking the digging location. Excavate the minimum required depth depending on the application. Fill the area with a well-draining base mate- rial, usually a combination of gravel and sand. Compact the gravel with a Plate Compactor in 2” deep intervals. Spread a 1” layer of coarse sand on the compacted base and level. Lay the pavers on the coarse sand, preferably staggering the joints for stability. Mark and cut any pavers that do not fit along edges or around objects. In- stall Brick Edge Restraints along the perimeter of the paving stones to prevent the pavers from shifting. Sweep the surface of the paving stones and compact with a Gas Plate Compactor to settle the pavers into the layer of coarse sand. Finish the project by sweeping fine sand into the joints of the pavers. Specially formulated sands are also available for creating a sealed joint to help prevent weeds and ants from penetrating between pavers. In addition to a wide variety of paving stones and retaining walls, Arnts Topsoil also provides the best selection of soils, mulches, aggregates, natural flagstone and rockery, decorative gravels, slabs, curbs, steps, pond supplies, and much more. What’s popular one year becomes old hat next year. In fashion, in movies, in food, in music and, of course, in home decor. As a decorator and home economist and frequent guest on Citytv’s CityLine, I need to keep up to date with the trends. It’s a part of my job that I really enjoy, because I love the excitement of what is new and I love turning people on to what is fresh and new in the marketplace. What’s different this year? The big story is that, at last, after years of being a minority issue, environmental aware- ness has moved into the mainstream. In home decor, it shows in our choice of colours and in our choice of materials. One of these styles is called Eco Chic. Colours are gentle and forgiving, the purest white, the palest lemon, the most brilliant chartreuse. Materials are close to nature – raw wood in all its glory, stone, mother of pearl, hand crafted textiles. Colours and materials unite in patterns that replicate botanical forms, artwork recreates the natural world. In window fashions look for fabrics created from grasses, reeds and bamboo. I think of a simple roller shade that filters light through homespun yarns. Another change is that people now stay home for many of the experiences they used to go out for. Movie night happens in home theatres. Big screens, access to media over satellite and internet connections, means that home is more important than ever. This importance is expressed in Classic Creations, a look that has always been in style, a look built around the idea of heirloom furniture, and lush fabrics. Colours are nostalgic – burgundy, plum, jade, gold and spice. The star fabrics are Du- pioni silks, and in the windows are Roman shades, in the traditional luxurious style. Levolor has introduced a wide range of exclusive fabrics, not just for Romans but also for roller shades. Lastly, another home-centred trend, but one for people living a full life in a small space. This year, in North America, there were for the first time, more single-person households than traditional family units. Even if you don’t live in an urban loft, you’ll live as if you did, in Metro Mod style. It’s a look that doesn’t need a lot of money to put together, though some may splurge on upscale appliances and chic designer furniture. Colours are warmer and vegetal in tone from last year’s urban style; mauve, turquoise, pumpkin and bronze. Dark undertones create a dusty look. Levolor selections include cel- lular shades, faux and real woods, Paneltrac and others in new colours, styles and sizes with control options. You can get a closer look online at www.levolor.ca. by Mary Dobson, Levolor Window Fashions Durham winners to compete in Toronto By Christy Chase cchase@durhamregion.com DURHAM — This was, in a sense, the opposite end of Cana- dian Idol. Twelve seniors on stage at Cul- len Park, competing for the title of Durham Senior Star and a chance to appear in the na- tional Senior Star competition this fall, put on by Chartwell Se- niors Housing REIT. While Canadian Idol is for young people, this one was for the young at heart. “It’s about time,” said competi- tor Jack Foster. “This is real cool today. You have to be 65 to get into this one.” For close to two hours, the com- petitors sang for three judges: Dan Clancy, lead singer of Lighthouse and a music business professor at Durham College; Cathy Schnip- pering, singer with the Durham Philharmonic Choir and director of the Pickering Perennials; and Christy Chase, entertainment edi- tor with Oshawa/Whitby/Claring- ton This Week. At the end of it all, three men, all crooners, were chosen as the top three stars. In first place was Bob Wing, of Pickering, known as Karaoke Bob, who sang Paul Anka’s ‘My Way’, made famous by Frank Sinatra. Judges were unanimous in choos- ing Wing for top spot. In second place was Fred Wof- fenden, of Whitby, for his jazz- styled version of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’. In third place was Lou Bleakley, who sang ‘Nice and Easy’. The three men were each of- fered a chance to record their songs on CD by Clancy, who was so impressed with the talent he volunteered his time and resourc- es for the recordings. Other competitors were Ruth and Jack Foster, Leslie Siklos, Dale Condie, Judge Reid Scott, Don Manning, Roger Wade, Art Tranter and Carmen Shirk. The competition was part of Chartwell’s Senior Appreciation Month and was the culmination of June talent competitions at Chartwell residences throughout Durham. Videos of the three top singers, along with submissions from re- gions across Canada, will be sub- mitted to Chartwell. Judges will choose 10 finalists to appear at the national competi- tion in Toronto. Mad about music Saturdays are back in Pickering starting July 7 Pickering Rotary Music Festival musicians, other performers play free concerts DURHAM — Young people are invited to start their summer weekends with music. Following a successful first year in 2006, the Durham West Arts Centre’s (DWAC) Kids’ Saturday Morning Music Madness series returns for six weeks in July and August. The music and fun takes place in the auditorium of the Pickering Public Library, One The Esplanade, Pickering. The 2007 series again features young performers, aged nine to 22, who excelled at the recent Pickering Rotary Music Festival. However, organizers this year have gone further afield to snag young artists from various schools of music and dance. The concerts are free and each starts at 10 a.m., lasting from 45 to 60 minutes. Each is based on the theme, Mad About Music. The line-up is: SATURDAY, JULY 7 – MADCAP MUSICAL MANIA! The name says it all! Anything goes this morning! Young musicians play and sing ev- erything from Sonatinas to Broad- way to piano trios. DWAC director Gary Faulkner is the master of cer- emonies. SATURDAY, JULY 14 – MAD ABOUT MINUETS, MOZART, MENDELSSOHN AND MORE. Instruments include piano, flute, guitar and oboe. Master of cer- emonies Marion Roberts, a local music teacher, leads listeners through this romantic period of music. SATURDAY JULY 21 - RULE BRITANNIA! MAD ABOUT THE ISLES. A feast of British Isles enter- tainment, from British folk songs to Irish dance and the Highland Fling, and even a bagpiper. Dun- can Mathieson, who plays clarinet with the Pickering Concert Band, is the master of ceremonies. SATURDAY, JULY 28 – MADLY TOGETHER! Vocal, dance and in- strumental duets and trios abound in this fun-filled hour of fresh young talent. The master of cer- emonies is Vivienne Joyce, head of music at Dunbarton High School. SATURDAY, AUGUST 11 – MAD ABOUT MUSICAL THEATRE! Master of ceremonies Anna Lynn Murphy, co-founder and musical director of the Young Singers, in- troduces young folks performing musical theatre selections from Cole Porter to Richard Rodgers to Andrew Lloyd Weber. SATURDAY, AUGUST 18 – MAD ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAF! (Not Toronto’s hockey team, but a trib- ute to Canadian composers!). The final morning features a little of ev- erything – piano, vocal and dance with Canadian content, including original compositions by young musicians. DWAC director Tim Dobson is the master of ceremo- nies. Gospel concert fundraiser Event supports VV’s day camp AJAX — Enjoy an eve- ning of gospel music in Ajax on Saturday. Ajax Strikers three-peat at Robbie Felicien hurdles to silver medal at Czech Republic competition PICKERING — Two-time world champion and Olympian Perdita Fe- licien’s 2007 outdoor track and field season is beginning to gather steam in the lead-up to the Pan Am Games and the world championships. Felicien posted a sec- ond-place finish while competing in the wom- en’s 100-metre hurdles in inclement weather condi- tions at the 46th Zlata Tre- tra Golden Spike Meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic on June 27. She posted a time of 13.02 seconds, just behind Josephine Onyia of Spain, who won in 12.91 seconds. The final also included 2004 Olympic gold medalist Michelle Perry of the U.S., who was disquali- fied during the final. The Golden Spike series meet in the Czech Republic was an impor- tant tune-up for Felicien in advance of the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from July 22 to 29. Felicien, currently ranked eighth in the world, was one of two women hurdlers named to the Canadian team, with fel- low Olympian Angela Whyte also representing the country in the 100m hurdles. Felicien hopes to im- prove on her silver- medal performance she achieved at the 2003 Pan Ams in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The 27-year-old hurdler is expected to represent Canada at the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Osaka, Japan from Aug. 25 to Sept. 2. She’s a former world champion of the 2003 championships in Paris. Perdita Felicien Keane helps Canada advance to Q-finals at U21 worlds Canada to meet Aussies today AJAX — Ajax’s Kalisha Keane and her Canadian teammates have advanced to the quar- ter-finals of the FIBA Under-21 World Cham- pionships for Women in Moscow. The Canadians earned a quarter-final berth after scoring a crucial 69-58 victory over Belgium on Wednesday to improve their record to 3-2 and clinch third place in Group ‘A’. Canada battles Australia in quar- ter-final action today (Friday). The Aussies placed second in Group ‘B’ with a 4-1 mark, finishing behind the Americans, which were a per- fect 5-0 in pool play. Keane, a guard on the Canadian team, ended the game with seven points, shooting 2-for-7 from the field and 1-for-3 from the three- point arc. She also went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. So far at the tournament, Keane is third in team scoring with 38 points in five games, shooting 31 per cent from the field and 54 per cent from the three-throw line. She’s also been active on the boards, pulling in 18 re- bounds from both ends of the court. She’s also the steal leader on the Canadian squad with eight. She’s also contributed three blocked shots. Keane will attend Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI) on a full athletic scholarship in basket- ball in the fall. Kalisha Keane By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Any way you slice it, the Ajax-Pickering Rock face a supreme chal- lenge to advance beyond the opening playoff series that gets under way tonight (Fri- day). The OLA Senior ‘B’ la- crosse team has drawn the Mohawk Stars and the de- fending league and Cana- dian (Presidents Cup) cham- pion Wellington Aces in the home-and-home round- robin West Division playoff series. The top two teams in the East and West Divisions move on to the semifinal se- ries. The Rock starts playoff action tonight (Friday) in Ohsweken against the Mo- hawks Stars. The squad re- turns home to play the Wel- lington Aces Saturday at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex at 7 p.m. The team’s mindset, says Rock head coach Paul St. John, is to beat the best right off the bat. “We’re playing against two top teams, if not the best teams, in the league, so it’s going to be a tough road,” says St. John. “We made our own bed with seven losses in a row. We want to win and we know that if we play like we did in the last four games, we should be successful. We’re right with those two teams.” Defensive play, says St. John, is pivotal to the Rock’s playoff fortunes. The Rock has, for the most part, played well in its own zone throughout the season. And, with starting goaltender Mike Miron rounding into form and the addition of ex- perienced netminder Steve ‘Chugger’ Dietrich, the de- fence should be that much more solid. “In three of our last four games, we held our oppo- nents to less than five goals. That’s our goal, to keep teams at four or five goals, and we think we can score enough goals to win,” says St. John, adding that having Di- etrich on board should pre- vent having tired goaltenders on back-to-back post-season games. St. John is also aware that his team must stay out of the penalty box as much as possible during the opening playoff series. “It’s a major concern as it has been in our five years in the league, let alone this year,” says St. John. “We’ve always tried to keep penalty minutes down. We don’t want to get beat on specialty teams. If the other team’s better than you, they should beat you 5-on-5 and we feel we’re the best team 5-on-5.” On offence, the Rock will rely heavily on captain Jim Veltman and newcomer Wayne Burke to show the way. As for Veltman, St. John believes the captain’s five- point performance in the Rock’s final regular-season game against Norwood is a harbinger of things to come in the playoffs. “If we get him going like he did against Norwood and have everyone riding on his coattails, it’s going to be a fun ride.” All pricing after applicable rebates, coupons cannot be combined with any other offers.
