Pickering family
torn apart by car
crash on U.S. interstate
By Danielle Milley
Staff Writer
PICKERING — Instead of relaxing in
Florida with family this week, Angela
St-Denis and her daughter Thérèse
have spent the past few days seeking
solace in family and friends.
Just seven hours into their long-
awaited vacation, Ms. St-Denis’ hus-
band, son and youngest daughter were
killed in the early morning hours Sat-
urday when a suspected drunk driver
travelling the wrong way on a Pennsyl-
vania highway crashed head-on into
their minivan.
Roger, 52, daughter Angela Mi-
chelle, 15, and son Paul, 21, were de-
clared dead at the scene near Bedford,
Penn., about 130 kilometres southeast
of Pittsburgh.
Ms. St-Denis, 52, and her 22-year-old
daughter, Thérèse, escaped the wreck-
age with minor injuries and were back
at home Sunday. She spoke with the
News Advertiser Wednesday.
Mr. St-Denis worked for the Bank of
Montreal and was a tireless volunteer
in the community. He sang in a choir,
ran the St. Vincent kitchen in Oshawa,
and for more than five years worked
with the victim crisis assistance refer-
ral services with the Durham Regional
Police Service.
Ms. St-Denis, a teacher, volunteered
with the service as well. The two were
on call once a week to come to the aid
of those in the community who were
the victim of a crime or a disaster.
Her training and experience has
helped her deal with the events of the
past few days.
“We’ve been in this situation so
many times when we’ve sat with peo-
ple and we listened to them talk about
their family,” Ms. St-Denis said. “This
is not new to us, this is what we’ve
been through with other people.”
Maybe it is those experiences and
training that has given her the ability
to do what many wouldn’t in a similar
situation, forgive the man who tore her
family apart.
“What’s the use of staying angry?
What’s that going to get us?” the griev-
ing mother said.
“He’s a human being. He made a
mistake. All I want now is that he never
get behind the wheel of a car again.”
Police said the St-Denis’ minivan
was passing a tractor-trailer when a
pickup driven by Jeremy Grimes, 23,
travelling north in the southbound
passing lane, slammed into them.

Police issue
warning about
potential
mortgage
frauds
DURHAM — Reports of suspicious
phone calls have prompted Durham
police to warn homeowners of a po-
tential mortgage fraud scheme.
According to investigators with
the service’s fraud unit, a number of
Durham residents have said they’ve
received phone calls from someone
who claims to be a bank employee,
asking questions about homeowner
mortgages.
In instances where the homeown-
er said there was no mortgage on the
property the caller promptly hung
up, police said.
The concern is that the caller may
have identified properties that are
mortgage-free, creating the possibil-
ity there will be an attempt made to
illegally obtain mortgages on them,
police said. Other similar calls have
been reported throughout the GTA.
In light of the reports, police are
making a couple of recommenda-
tions: first, that personal and finan-
cial information not be divulged in
such circumstances.
As well, police advise homeown-
ers to obtain mortgage insurance,
which will cover them in the event
a fraud is perpetrated on the prop-
erty.
The provincial government has
passed legislation protecting hom-
eowners from liability in cases of
mortgage fraud but the extra mea-
sure of insurance provides addition-
al coverage, police said.
Anyone who’s received a suspi-
cious call regarding mortgages is
asked to call Detective Katherine
Denton at 905-579-1520, ext. 5281.

Bells ring
in changes
Students may be starting
or ending later to make
busing more effective
By Crystal Crimi
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Students could be
starting the school day a little earlier,
or ending a bit later.
To use buses more effectively, Dur-
ham Student Transportation Services
plans to adjust school bell times across
the region. The proposed changes are
part of a busing agreement between
Durham’s public and Catholic school
boards and would help integrate and
streamline routes, allowing for cost
savings. The Durham Catholic District
School Board reviewed a report about
the time shifts at its Dec. 18 meeting.
“To me, that’s a reason our enrol-
ment could go down,” said Oshawa
Trustee Joe Corey, referring to time
changes proposed for St. Christopher
Catholic School in Oshawa.
Trustee Corey said there are three
public schools in the St. Christopher
area that students could choose in-

gela and Paul, were killed when a truck collided with their minivan on a U.S. interstate Saturday, Dec. 23.
stead because of the bell adjustments.
“Can I ask you a question,” said Whitby Trustee
Mary Ann Martin, chairman of the Catholic board.
“You think because of 10 minutes our enrolment
is going to go down?”
“I think so,” said Trustee Corey. He said the
change could impact babysitting schedules.
Trustee Corey asked what cost savings would
be offered. Director of Education Patricia Manson
said she was not yet sure, but could find out.
In Ajax, the current bell times at St. Bernadette
could go from 8:45 a.m. and 3:10 p.m. to 8:55
a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Trustee Corey was also upset the transporta-
tion consortium is making the final decision on
bell changes.
“I think we should have the comments from the
people,” he said.
Trustee Martin said the proposed changes are
going out to the community.
According to a report presented to the Catholic
board, staff from Durham Transportation Ser-
vices will ask school superintendents, principals,
and school councils to make comments and sug-
gestions within the next couple of months. After
reviewing the submissions, the transportation
group will report its findings to the board, as
well as make the final decision. Principals will
be made aware of any bell changes by April for
distribution to the school community.
Below are the proposed changes designed to
do at least one of the following: use buses more
effectively, integrate students from both boards,
streamline transportation for high-traffic areas
and produce savings.

Cops alarmed at
this year’s numbers
By Jeff Mitchell
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Got $12,000 handy?
That’s what it’s going to cost you if
you’re busted for drinking and driving
this holiday season, according to Dur-
ham police.
During a media event Friday morn-
ing at the Oshawa police station, Dep-
uty chief Mike Ewles stood beside a
heap of cash totalling $12,000
piled on the bunk of a hold-
ing cell to make his point.
“We need to send the mes-
sage home to drivers: If you
get caught, you’re going to
put $12,000 behind bars.
“And you might end up behind bars
yourself.”
The $12,000 figure represents legal
costs, transportation costs, higher in-
surance premiums, the expense of in-
stalling an ignition lock in your vehicle
and other consequences of a drunk
driving conviction.
Durham police, alarmed at yet an-
other year in which a high number
of drunk drivers are being caught at
Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driv-
ing Everywhere) stops, are stepping
up their information campaign to help
fight the problem.
As of Dec. 18, almost 60 people had
been arrested for drunk driving in four
weeks of stepped-up RIDE enforce-
ment, Deputy-Chief Ewles said.
In addition, there have been six
highway fatalities involving
alcohol in 2006.
“We’re really struggling with
the numbers we have,” said
the deputy-chief. Durham po-
lice have shifted the focus of
this year’s info campaign to concen-
trate on the consequences of a drunk
driving conviction, he said.
“What we want to do is show drivers
what are the ramifications of their ac-
tions,” Deputy-Chief Ewles said.

es would be laid. Police believe
the driver was drinking before
the crash. Mr. Grimes could face
three counts of vehicular homi-
cide.
Ms. St-Denis said she is in
touch with Pennsylvania police.
But now, she’d rather talk about
her wonderful husband and fan-
tastic children.
“We were the perfect family,”
she said.
If Mr. Denis was asked to do
something, she said, he’d always
lend a hand.
“He always...he was a yes man,”
she said. “He always said yes.”
The position at St. Vincent’s
was one that he just happened
upon.
“My husband was the last re-
sort or else it would have closed,”
she said.
Not one to turn down a request
for help, he came to the rescue
with Ms. St-Denis serving as cook
and the kids helping out as well.
Her husband needed very little
sleep to get by, she said, he was a
“g o, go, go” kind of person.
With their busy work schedules
and heavy volunteer and church
work, the family hadn’t had a
real vacation together in about
10 years, she said. Thérèse is an
engineering student at Queen’s
University; Paul was in comput-
ers at Seneca College; and Angela
was in Grade 10 at Étienne Brûlé
School.
The family set out from their
Pickering home about 8:30 p.m.
Friday with Paul driving, on what
was to be a two-week vacation
– one week in Florida visiting
relatives and another on a cruise
ship with stops in Bermuda and
Mexico.
For the last several years the St-
Denis family were also full-time
caregivers to an elderly relative
who lived with them until she
passed away earlier this year. “We
needed to get away,” Ms. St-Denis
said.
The family stopped about 3
a.m. to get something to eat, and
then Mr. St-Denis took over at the
wheel from Paul because he likes
driving at night. Ms. St-Denis said
she was dozing off in back of the
van when a loud noise “like a
shotgun or an explosion of some
sort” jolted her awake.
“The car was just spinning,”
she recalled, “and then it came
to a stop. I looked over and my
daughter had been thrown out of
the car.
“I was going between my hus-
band, my daughter and my son,”
she said. “They weren’t moving,
there were no signs of life.”
Although all family members
were wearing seat belts and the
airbags had deployed, the vio-
lence of the impact left at least
one of the van’s occupants in the
road.
“I saw my daughter lying in the
middle of the road,” Ms. St-Denis
said, “so I brought her to the side
and I saw she had a big gash on
the side of her head.
“I went to see if she had a
pulse, I thought she had a bit of a
pulse.”
Then, she added, “a lady came
over and said ‘I’m a nurse’,” and
she said, `Step back,’ and she
checked for a pulse, and 10 sec-
onds later she said she was gone.”
Visitation will be held at High-
land Funeral Home, 3280 Shep-
pard Ave. E, on Jan. 1 from 7 to 9
p.m. and Jan. 2 from 2 to 4 p.m.
and 6 to 8 p.m.
The family funeral takes place
at 11 a.m. on Jan. 3 at St. Isaac
Jogues Catholic Church, 1148
Finch Ave.
