In an all-candidates meeting hosted by the Pickering East Shore Community Association (PESCA), it was no surprise that the Bay Ridges Plaza redevelopment was the top issue for many in atten- dance. While the plan for two highrise towers and 126 townhouses has already been approved by council, one resident wanted to know if the Wa rd 2 City councillor candidates would take the issue to the Ontario Municipal Board. “The project has already been passed,” Councillor Doug Dicker- son said. “No, I would not go to the Ontario Mu- nicipal Board with it be- cause it would be wast- ing your money.” Candidate Brian Evely said he has a petition about it on his website. “I would love to open up negotiations with the owners of that land,” he said. Candidate Eileen Higdon had spoken out about the development in public meetings. “I would run to the board if I had four votes on coun- cil,” she said. Dan Myall, also run- ning for the position, felt the City should address other important issues. “I feel what’s done is done and we should move on,” he said. The proposed Pickering airport and the Duffins Rouge Agricul- tural Preserve proved to be not just Ward 3 issues, with questions coming from the audience about both. All Ward 2 City candidates said they were for preserving the pre- serve and there was agreement on the airport, with several candi- dates saying there is no business case for the airport. All Ward 2 City candidates, ex- cept incumbent Doug Dickerson, said they wouldn’t take campaign contribu- tions from developers. Mr. Dickerson said if he didn’t take contribu- tions from the business community, he would need to solicit from al- ready overburdened taxpayers. After being questioned about his campaign do- nations by several resi- dents, Coun. Dickerson told one woman to sit down. “You’re like this every election,” he said to the woman. The Ward 2 Regional candidates each had a solution when ques- tioned about traffic. “I’ve been advocating for a few years to get a solution to speeding on our streets,” Coun. Bill McLean said, adding he’s asked the Prov- ince for permission to use photo radar on city streets. In an unanimous vote on Oct. 25, Durham regional council- lors directed its negotiating team to head back to the bargaining table with members of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union in an effort to end the Durham Region Transit (DRT) strike. “We have asked our nego- tiating team to try and set up a meeting with your negoti- ating team as soon as possi- ble,” said regional chairman Roger Anderson, as more than 100 CAW members sat in the council chambers to hear the result of the vote. By early Thursday morn- ing, one day, Saturday, Oct. 28, was scheduled for dis- cussions and Garth Johns, the Region’s commissioner of human resources, said he expected to have an update on the situation by Monday morning. No talks have taken place since the strike began Oct. 5. The stale- mate was broken when regional councillors received a letter from the CAW. It sparked an incamera discussion that resulted in a motion to get talks going. John Johnson, CAW Local 222 unit chair- man, explained the letter stated that, contrary to what councillors have been hear- ing, the union is willing to modify some of its major proposals. “We can negotiate and we can make compromises be- tween us, there is no doubt about it,” Mr. Johnson said. “Right now we are down to the last few issues, so we could finish it in a day if they bargain seriously with us.” Negotiations began last May to arrive at a first col- lective agreement between the two sides, but broke down after 18 days at the bargaining table. DRT driv- ers took their buses out of service over issues of retiree benefits, contracting out and sick leave payout. “Our members are hope- ful, they don’t want to be on the street, they want to be back to work,” said Nikki Henderson, DRT operations steward and a member of the bargaining team. “We are not that far apart on the issues; this is a communi- cation breakdown and we really want to get back to the table.” According to Mr. Johnson, buses will be back on the street as soon as there is a tentative agreement. A cultural centre for Pickering was also an area of concern. “A cultural centre makes a lot of sense for our aging popula- tion and families,” Mr. Degen said. “I do support the Durham West Art Council. Their man- date is to put an art centre in Pickering or Ajax. I would like it in Pickering,” Mr. McLean said. The mayoral candidates also attended and were asked if they thought it was important to improve existing infrastructure before allowing more develop- ment. “What we need first of all is restoration...I can’t believe it’s gone on as long as it has. There are too many houses, not enough businesses,” John New- ell said. “We are making prog- ress. We will continue to shift the tax base and that’s the way we’ll do this to make improve- ments,” Mayor Dave Ryan said. When it came to campaign contribu- tions, Mayor Ryan said accept- ing donations from the devel- opment industry is legal and part of the process. Mr. Newell said there would never be any developer con- tributions in his cam- paign, although he added he didn’t think they would want to do- nate to him. Election day is Nov. 13. Pickering Ward 3 candidates get their chance to debate Wednesday Officials says Town’s concerns about poor water quality ignored By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer AJAX — Thinking its concerns haven’t been addressed, the Town wants the Province to order a more stringent environmental assess- ment before the water pollution control plant is expanded. On Monday, Ajax filed a request for a Part II Order, formerly called a bump-up, before the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant is expanded. Durham and York regions jointly own the facility, which is immedi- ately east of the Pickering nuclear station. The plant processes sew- age from Ajax and Pickering and most of York Region. The regions want to expand the plant so it could handle up to 630 million litres per day, up from the current 420 million litres per day. However, Ajax officials feel the plant contributes to poor water quality along the Town’s water- front. High bacteria counts have forced the beaches in Ajax to be closed all summer for the past two years. The regions have been using a Municipal Class EA to consider the expansion. A Part II Order, if granted by En- vironment Minister Laurel Broten, would require a full EA, which is much more involved and lengthy. “The Region hasn’t dealt with our concerns,” Mayor Steve Parish said during the Ajax council meet- ing on Monday. Planning and development di- rector Paul Allore said the ministry would ask the two regions to reply to the Town’s request. He expected it would take two or three weeks for the reply. “Upon the receipt of the reply, the minister will make a decision,” Mr. Allore stated. The options available to the minister include ordering the full bump-up, requiring additional conditions be added to the new order, ordering the sides to con- ciliation or arbitration to settle the matter, or deciding against the To wn and accepting the findings of the EA filed by the regions. The Town has argued the EA hasn’t sufficiently considered the impact of water and air quality that will come from the larger plant. With the increase in effluent coming from the larger plant, as well as high phosphorous counts, Mayor Parish said “we had no choice. “I hope, at the very least, the minister (of environment) orders Yo rk and Durham to do the job properly,” he stated. “I hope Dur- ham will be pushing hard on its brother region, York, this should be done right.” He noted the expansion “is all about development in York. There’s huge development in York and that’s fine, but we’re at the tail end of it.” Wards 1 and 2 Regional Coun- cillor Scott Crawford said Durham staff “feel they’ve complied” with the EA requirements, adding Gary Bowen, a Toronto and Region Con- servation official, told Ajax council the plant wasn’t causing the prob- lems. “It’s up the minister. There are many things that could be added to this or they’ll agree with our side,” Coun. Crawford stated. Ward 2 local Councillor Joe Dickson added, “The way we’re dealing with the Region is appro- priate. “We have to have our beachfront open.” Meet Magical Michael...Be AMAZED! Be AMUSED! Be ASTONISHED! So what are the facts? CAW 222 tells us (view their recent letter to our mayor on the CAW 222 website) that Durham Region is significantly reducing their pre-amalgamation benefits, and all they want is to simply maintain what they had prior to amalgamation. Durham Region, on the other hand, is saying that the union is asking for significant improvements to the pre-amalgama- tion contracts, which will cost the Region (and us taxpayers) an additional $10 million per year. How about the union and Region publish a line-by-line comparison of pre-amalgamation/ post-amalgamation ben- efits (and associated additional benefit costs, and there shouldn’t be any because the union isn’t asking for anything they don’t already have) so that we can see who is being hon- est with the general public. It can’t be that difficult, can it? EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 27, 2006 durhamregion.com Pickering reporter fights urge to snitch on landlords Apartment hunting has made me see my current home in a whole new light. Granted, parking has become scarce there and it’s a little far from work, but it is looking better and better. To be fair, the apartments I’ve seen in Pickering haven’t been bad. For the most part they’ve been clean, the landlords nice, and the neighbourhoods quaint. However, they were all probably illegal. Pickering passed an “accessory dwell- ing unit” bylaw that covers basement apartment, in-law suites, etc. about a year ago. Here are the basics of the bylaw: residents are allowed one extra unit in a residential home and the unit must be registered with the City so the fire depart- ment can make sure it is safe. One unit I saw was a typical two-storey suburban home featuring four units in it (illegal). One landlord said rent would be paid in cash (not sure, but leaning to- wards illegal). A call to one ad was greet- ed with the announcement the home featured three other units with men so I, as a young woman, probably wouldn’t be the best fit there. “Four units in one house?” I said, un- able to keep the judgement out of my voice. “It’s a big house,” she said. “Five thou- sand square feet.” (Yah, that’s why it would be a bad idea to live in one of four units in a house, because of those three men). It took every ounce of restraint I had not to lecture her. After my first evening of viewing I con- tacted the City to see if the list of regis- tered units was available to the public, thinking potential tenants should have the right to know if their future home is up to snuff. Apparently, they don’t. A part of me wants to protect the safety of other apartment hunters by giving the City the addresses and phone numbers of the potential death traps. (The part of me that is a big tattletale). But, I’ve re- sisted the urge. I’m trying to pretend I’m just an average young woman looking for a nice place to live that will leave me enough money at the end of the month to buy cute shoes and purses, but it’s hard. Landlords, do yourself and your ten- ants a favour and register your basement apartments. The City was trying to pro- tect its citizens by instituting the registra- tion, not create a cash grab. Go to the City before it gets to you...I’m not sure how long I can hold my peace. Danielle Milley’s column ap- pears every third Friday. E-mail dmilley@durhamregion.com. Sketchy situations have Danielle rethinking apartment hunt Danielle Milley staff writer Police officers deserve our thanks Day in and day out our local police officers go beyond the call of duty. But many of their acts of courage and compassion go unnoticed. For those officers it’s often summed up as just part of their job. But every year a number of those officers are recognized during Durham’s Police Appreciation Night. Their stories are brought to light and we get insight into their jobs and the commitment they make to our community. Constable Todd Petzold was instrumental in bringing the issue of replica handguns to the attention of the public and our political leaders. The problem was wide-spread and Const. Petzold knew the impending dangers they caused. So many of these so-called toys being handled by young people are so real that they can cause panic in the general public. They are next to impossible to differentiate from a real hand- gun. An emotional Const. Dave Mounsteven personally thanked Const. Michel Roy, a use-of-force instructor at the Police Learning Centre at Durham College, for skills that aided him in a life-and-death struggle with armed suspects. “Thank you; you truly did save my life,” he said. Throughout the evening other officers were honoured by guests and their peers. Sergeant Gil Hughes pulled an unconscious man away from a burning truck he happened upon while driving to work in Oshawa early one morning last March. His act just goes to prove that policing is not just a job, it’s something that is in the blood and doesn’t start when you clock in or stop when you head home after a shift. Detective Teresa Hutchinson’s detailed crime analysis led to more than 100 charges being laid against a pair of thieves who hit numerous victims in the community. Det. David Brown, a member of the Biker Enforcement Unit whose ef- forts were instrumental in a province-wide sweep that last month, saw hundreds of charges laid against Hells Angels members. Const. Rick Flynn was recognized by his colleagues in the Clarington division for dedication to his duties, and support of his colleagues. There are literally thousands of stories of officers going the extra mile and while they all can’t be highlighted in one night or this editorial they are all deserving of our thanks. The policy, which in- volves school communities deciding if they want a full- day or half-day kindergar- ten program, was approved during the Durham Catholic District School Board’s Oct. 23, meeting. Its purpose is to provide school commu- nities with a framework for establishing a kindergarten delivery model to meet the needs of students and the local community. It applies to all elementary schools in the board and, through it, the Catholic school council will be engaged in a model review and recommenda- tion procedure every three years. “I think it should be only for a year,” said Oshawa Trustee Joe Corey. “I’m against deciding it for three years.” It was created after some trustees heard from parents who were unhappy with the process and felt they were not being consulted. The new policy gives staff and the community an opportu- nity to change the model. Brock/Scugog/Uxbridge Trustee Kathy Lefort mo- tioned to change the review to one year in the policy, but it was lost after a tie vote. “I believe this is some- thing that should always go back to our parent commu- nity,” said Trustee Lefort, and added the parents with kids in kindergarten change every year. Oshawa Trustee Fred Jones argued the three-year period provides stability. “Staff are able to better plan, it will give parents an idea as well, as to what it’s going to be,” said Trustee Jones. Pickering Trustee Paul Bannister said a one- year review period would make it difficult for parents to plan daycare schedules. “It’s really apparent the people on this board are re- ally out of touch with par- ents,” said Trustee Bannis- ter. “Why would you want someone to make a deci- sion for your school three years in advance?” Trustee Corey responded. “I think you’re out to lunch.” Superintendent Paul Pulla said the policy was posted for comment between May and Sept. 9. “We received no input on this policy at all,” said Mr. Pulla. Director of education Patricia Manson suggested trustees implement the pol- icy with the three-year re- view period and a commit- ment from staff to review it after collecting feedback from schools by late fall. All but Trustee Corey voted in approval. Carriers of The Week If you did not receive your News Advertiser/flyers OR you are interested in a paper route call Circulation at (905) 683-5117. While he may not hold any heavyweight champion belts, it’s because the boxing Mr. Van Der Herberg engages in is far different from the world of prizefighting. Mr. Van Der Herberg is responsible for the Bowmanville dropoff location for Operation Christmas Child. The international holiday charity collects donations of toys and other gifts, which are packed in shoe boxes for children throughout the developing world. Since the program’s inception in 1993, 48 million shoeboxes of goods have been col- lected worldwide. Mr. Van Der Herberg, who owns the Dur- ham Christian Book Store in Bowmanville, has been involved in Operation Christmas Child since 2002 and has seen donations increase over the four years he has partici- pated. “Last year, we collected 18,000 boxes throughout Durham Region,” he said. “We (Mr. Van Der Herberg and his wife, Sharon) at the bookstore collected 1,897 boxes. This year I’d like to top 2,000 (boxes collected at the bookstore).” In his first year with the program, Mr. Van Der Herberg collected 297 boxes. “It’s amazing to see what happens to a community, even years after those boxes ar- rived,” he said. “You’re packing a box, which to us seems trivial, but you have to under- stand that you’re giving this box to a kid who has absolutely nothing. In many cases, this box can be the most valuable thing a child can receive in their lifetime.” Ajax drop-off lo- cations include 290 Harwood Avenue South and Carruthers Creek Community Church at 599 Bayly St. For a complete list of drop-off locations and visit the website at http:// www.samaritanspurse.ca/occ/. C ARP SELECTS INVESTMENT PLANNING COUNSEL AS THE FINANCIAL ADVISORY FIRM OF CHOICE FOR ITS MEMBERS CARP Recognizes the Need for Advice After exhaustive due diligence, CARP (CARP is Canada's Association for the Fifty-Plus) has announced that Investment Planning Counsel (IPC) has been selected over 25 other national advisory firms as its recommended wealth management company. CARP chooses Investment Planning Counsel Over a year ago, CARP set out to identify a national financial advisory company that was much like itself – national in stature, community based and an advocate for the needs of its members. CARP chose IPC for its demonstrated expertise and objectivity in providing retirees and pre-retirees with the prudent financial leadership they need. IPC has a base of competent advisors, not a sales force. Lillian Morgenthau, founder and president of CARP said: “Our mandate is to enhance the rights and the quality of life of mature Canadians, and we believe that Investment Planning Counsel’s corporate philosophy of helping Canadians live their dream, plus their solid financial planning expertise, makes them a great fit for our members. We look forward to growing our relationship with IPC over the next decade and beyond.” Get to know your CARP Certified advisors:The Matheis Team Our role in financial planning goes beyond merely analyzing your existing assets and determining how much must be saved to reach a particular goal. A proper financial plan should also assist you in developing realistic objectives and lifestyles and to help ensure that you are aware of the decisions and adjustments that may have to be made along the way. In other words, financial planning is a process not a one-time event. Furthermore, financial planning is not just about retirement and RRSPs but more importantly, simple, efficient organization of your financial affairs. We understand that the planning process differs for each person or business and we can help with all the challenges, providing personal solutions tailored to your needs and goals. 905.837.2600 Web:www.thematheisteam.ca 1101 Kingston Road, Suite 150, Pickering, Ontario, L1V 1B5 HalloweenHalloween Superstore *10% off all regular priced items. Students out to make penny pals By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — Many people throw pennies into a jar or even away, but for St. Francis De Sales Catholic School’s Operation Home Fires collection, that’s all they’ll take. To show the difference each person and every penny can make, intermediate students are collect- ing the copper coins to buy comfort kits for Cana- dian soldiers in Afghanistan. “We don’t want people to bring in quarters, we want pennies,” said teacher Steven Beltrano. With the help of other schools, they’re hoping to raise $5,000 in pennies. So far, St. Bridget Catholic School in Brooklin, Cadarackque Public School in Ajax and St. Wilfrid Catholic School in Pickering have signed on and others have been invited to, said Mr. Beltrano. “It’s really a lofty goal,” he said. “I’m looking at a couple hundred dollars and it’s a lot of pennies.” In the school’s library next to him, a group of students was counting pennies they collected in two custodial buckets. “The kids love it; they eat this stuff up,” said Mr. Beltrano. “They’re out there counting, nobody’s fighting.” Bruce Sharpe, chairman of the Operation Home Fires Committee for the Ajax Legion, Branch 322, is excited the kids are participating. “I think the whole point of kids getting involved is if the kids don’t know about war, it will never end,” said Mr. Sharpe. He said Operation Home Fires began last year at the Whitby Legion and has since spread to other branches. “It’s just more or less an awareness project that our troops are over there in Afghanistan,” said Mr. Sharpe. “All we’re trying to do is send the boys some stuff and let them know we’re thinking about them.” The Ajax Legion is also raising money for the proj- ect - $1,000 to date through T-shirt sales for support- ing troops. Comfort kits will be purchased with the money, and include items such as cologne, mirrors and candies. For Mr. Beltrano, the idea to get his students involved came when his class said it wanted to do something for Remembrance Day. He did some searching on the Internet and ran the comfort kits idea by his students, who decided to call it their Penny Pals project. He said sometimes adults are surprised when students get enthusiastic about being involved in Remembrance Day and veteran projects. While Mr. Beltrano was talking, the lunch bell rang, but the kids continued to count. “They didn’t even flinch,” he said. “Children do realize what’s been done for them,” said Mr. Beltrano. He said the project is nice because it gives them a personal connection to what has happened and what is happening still. Anyone interested in donating pennies, coin rolls or the use of coin counters, can e-mail Steven. Beltrano@dcdsb.ca. “I’d like all those teachers across the region to say, ‘hey, let’s get involved in this, even if it’s a role of pennies’,” said Mr. Beltrano. Any who do will be recognized when the cheque is presented. A.J. The clerk, a 55-year-old woman, was not hurt during an attempted robbery at the Bayly Variety Store in the Bayly Street - Liver- pool Road area of Pickering around 10 p.m., police said. Cops said the woman grabbed an assailant’s hand and they struggled over a pocketknife before the suspect, believed to be 14 to 16, grabbed some cigarettes and fled on foot. A knife was also brandished in a robbery at the Mr. Sub outlet on Ritson Road South, near Dean Avenue in Oshawa, around 10 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Police said a white man in his mid-20s made off with cash, then fled south on Rit- son. Although both teams had an equal number of shots, the bankers’ aim held true while the Tomatoes just couldn’t catch a break, with nu- merous shots rimming out as Sco- tiabank pocketed a 62-25 victory. Sonia Thomas, whose children were not impressed with her 10- point outing last week, stepped it up to lead the way with 14, followed closely by Engrid Carmichael-John- son with 12. Barb Armstrong tallied eight, including two free throws, for the Tomatoes. In the second game of the eve- ning, East Side Mario’s cooked the Grey Geese 55-43. East Side battled the Grey Geese and led 23-19 at the half despite an 11-point, first-half per- formance by Grey Goose Nicole Pennie. Debi Bonar had the play of the night with a spectacular pass while falling out of double coverage, hitting an open Kim Bourque who promptly took off on a fast break to net two points to open the second half. East Side finally wore down the short-handed geese late in the game for the victory. East Side Mario’s rookie, Tanya Williams, led all scorers on the night with 16 points. Clarke Rich- ardson on Wednesday afternoon. The contest was scoreless after regu- lation time and remained that way through a sudden-death overtime frame. The game remained dead- locked as each team scored three times in penalty flicks. Richardson, however, advanced after winning in sudden-death penalty flicks. In the other semifinal, Dunbarton edged the Ajax High School Rams 2- 1, also played Wednesday afternoon at Richardson. In Monday’s LOSSA quarter- final contests: Richardson defeated Oshawa’s O’Neill Redhawks 2-0 in penalty flicks; Pickering High edged Whitby’s All Saints Titans 1-0; Ajax High defeated the Sinclair Celtics of Whitby 2-1 in penalty flicks; and Dunbarton defeated Oshawa’s R.S. The atoms moved to 9-0 on the Cen- tral Ontario Minor Football League sea- son after cruising past the Scarborough Thunder 30-6 in muddy field conditions at Kinsmen Park in Pickering last Sun- day. The Dolphins have a chance to chalk up an undefeated season with a victory over the North York Grizzlies at Kinsmen Park on Sunday, with game time at 11:30 a.m. The tykes play at 9:30 a.m., with the peewees at 1:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Dolphins tykes and peewees also played the Thunder last Sunday, with the tykes (6-3) dropping a 6-0 decision to Scarborough. The pee- wees (8-1) earned a 34-0 shutout. In the atom game, the Dolphins scored 24 unanswered points in the second quarter to put a virtual lock on the win. Quarterback Michael Stobbart scored all three majors on keeper plays. Kicker Luke Taylor Eskins went 3-for-3 in converts in the first half. The Dolphins’ defence was solid in the first quarter with linebacker Eskins and defensive linemen Justin Smith and Keifer Smith Gho making big plays. In the second quarter, linebacker Keldyn Ahlstedt, defensive back Keith Cyrus and lineman Rae Grant made big stops on the Thunder. Slotback Denver Wright scored early in the third quarter on an end-around play to make the score 30-0. The Thun- der notched their only touchdown in the fourth quarter to end the scoring. With the peewee contest being the third of the day, the Dolphins not only faced a challenge by the Thunder, but also soupy field conditions. The terrible conditions didn’t slow down the Dolphin offence, which racked up 34 points, with a strong running game supplemented by some timely pass completions. Meanwhile, the Dolphin defence kept up the attack despite the slippery field, frustrating the Scarborough offence and keeping their opponent scoreless for the second week in a row. Although the Dolphins tykes were eager to crush the Thunder’s undefeated season, poor weather conditions, includ- ing heavy rain, did them no favours. In a battle in the trenches, the defence toiled gamely with neither team able to put together a consistent drive. After a scoreless first half, the defences continued to thwart the other’s offence in the second half. The Dolphin defence was particularly strong on the right side with outside linebacker Michael Gliberry and corner Stuart Mackenzie shutting down any runs to the right. Their fine work forced the Thunder to run all their plays to the left side of the defence. In the fourth quarter, a couple of runs off-tackle by the Thunder combined with a penalty against the Dolphins for a late hit brought the ball down to the Dol- phins’ three-yard line. Despite holding the Thunder at that point for two plays, Scarborough finally managed to score the lone touchdown of the game. The Dolphins blocked the convert attempt. A highlight of the game was a 15-yard completion by Dolphins’ quarterback Raishaun Provo to wide receiver Rion Johnson. Spencer Thomas also had an exceptional game. The talented writers were recognized at Ajax council Monday night, where they also received prizes for a job well done. Grade 3 student, First Place, JK- Grade 3 Division and Best of Contest By Benjamin Hall Everyone in my school thought I was just another normal kid, but they didn’t know that at night I donned a mask and became one super super hero! OK, so let me get this straight. This super hero is called BIO-De-GREAT. At night I fly around on a green bin and check out your trash. I know it sounds kind of gross, but trust me it matters. I look for people who do not use their green bins properly. First I went into a house with a broken garage door. The first thing I saw was horrible! Someone had put a banana peel in the garbage! I took it out and put it in the green bin, which for some reason had a plastic bag in it. I left a note on the green bin saying, “Plastic bags are not biodegradable. Try harder next time.” Luckily my work was done at that house. Next I flew to a house that recently had a pool party. In their trash I found a half eaten party size pizza with everything on it, including anchovies. YUCK! In the green bin I found plastic cups. I put on my gloves for this job. It was a messy one. I put the pizza, with anchovies and all in the green bin. The plastic cups were placed in the blue box. I looked at my watch. It was 3 a.m., time to go home. By the time I got home, it was 4 a.m. It took me a while to realize that I was lying in my bed. My green bin alarm clock was beeping. Did I trick you? That was just a dream I had. But wait, why do I have a cape on my back? Tricked you again! I really am BIO-De-GREAT. Soon I went downstairs for breakfast. This morning I wasn’t very hun- gry, so I didn’t finish my toast. I put it in the green bin. The green bin was full, so I took it outside. Suddenly, my muscles tensed, the way they normally do when people use their green bins improperly. I walked over to the neighbour’s house. The neighbour’s trash contained: table scraps, tissues, paper tow- els, and napkins. Wow! After leaving them a note, I emptied it all out into the green bin. Thank you for reading about the fabulous life of BIO-De-GREAT. My mission is to re- duce the amount of garbage and save the environment, one house at a time. GREEN BIN! Oh sorry, Goodbye! Grade 4 student, First Place, Grade 4- 6 Division By Shanthi Bell E veryone in my school thought I was just another normal kid, but they didn’t know that at night I donned a mask and became Supersonic Sleuth. Our story began at the 50th anniver- sary celebration of Ajax High School, after Mayor Barbara Dugan’s speech thanking Mrs. Muriel Richmond for donat- ing Ajax High School’s first year book. I was there with my family, getting refreshments, when head librarian, Paige Turner, screamed “the 1956 year book has been stolen!” At a closer look, I saw the lock had been tampered with and lay on the floor beside what looked like a puddle that smelt like per- fume, so I guessed the thief must be female. As Police Chief Doug- las Harold and Officers Alex Douglas, Ste- phen Bell and James Williams arrived, I went to change into Supersonic Sleuth. I used my telepathic ability to listen in as the police got information from Ben, the owner of Olfactory Perfumes. Ben named a few including, Vanessa and Tara and Mandy Adams, as people who had bought that perfume. My super computer mind filed the information. I paused at Mandy’s name because she’s the most popular girl in school, not to mention my worst enemy as well. The next day at school, I saw Mandy with some eighth graders wearing identi- cal jackets. I heard Mandy say something about the year book, but before I heard any more information, Vanessa and Tara invited me to have lunch with them. So there I sat, Kit Abby Livre, with my best friends, then it just popped into my head: if the bottle was not there, but the perfume was, then Mandy must have somehow bro- ken her perfume bottle when she tried to stuff the year book into her backpack. How to prove that Many took it? After school, I saw her alone at the swings. I walked over and sat down on a swing. Mandy looked a little green. “Hey, are you OK?” I asked. Before Mandy could answer, she fainted! It was lucky for me that the swings are surrounded by trees. I changed into Supersonic Sleuth without being seen. I carried Mandy into Miranda Culbertson, the school principal’s, office. Once Mandy was revived, she looked around the office and saw Ms. Culbert- son and Supersonic Sleuth, both looking worried. Mandy started moaning and crying, then she began telling her story. “I took the 1956 year book as part of Rotary Rebels initiation. I tried to get in the gang so I could find out where their secret hideout is. Then I was going to tell the police everything and give back all the stuff. I thought I would be a hero,” she said. “But the Rebels wanted me to bully kids and wreck stuff. I couldn’t do that! I just wanted it to stop! I don’t want to be in the gang! Please help me!” I said. “I’ll go and get Chief Harold, who’ll want to talk to you to get names of gang members and make some arrests.” When it was all over, Mandy told everyone that Supersonic Sleuth was the best, but she and I are still enemies. Oh well, you can’t win ‘em all. At least my secret is still safe and I can be an average girl during the day and Su- personic Sleuth at night! Grade 8 student, First Place, Grade 7- 8 Division By Kerri Guyatt E veryone in my school thought I was just another normal kid, but they didn’t know that at night I donned a mask and became the crime fighter of our quaint little town. You want to know how I found out I had powers? It all started when... I walked through the doors of my school and took in a deep breath. The smell of stale coffee and ink from the photocopier filled my lungs. I walked through the halls until I reached my classroom and took out my books. The day had begun just how it always did except for one thing. This was the fifth day my class had a supply teacher. I didn’t think much of it at the time so I just carried on how I usually do. Everything was going normally except before I left the supply teacher called out, “See you tomorrow,” as if she knew that my teacher wasn’t going to come back! I ran up to her and asked her if she knew where my teacher, Mrs. Starky, was. She looked at me but never answered. That night I tossed and turned, wonder- ing what Mrs. Starky was up to. I began to feel very nervous as to what could have happened to her! Before long I fell into a deep sleep, dreaming that she was stuck in a cell somewhere and I was flying above her, almost like a bird, and I was looking down at her and listening to her pleas. As I woke up, I jerked into alertness. I lay back down and closed my eyes tightly, trying to push the image of my teacher screaming for help out of my mind. Just as I was dozing off again I heard a scream. I jumped out of bed and looked out the window. Another scream shattered the air throughout the town and I realized it was coming from the abandoned pulp mill where the town still stored some leftover pulp they had from a few years ago when it was still working. The scream rang through the town once again. I let the sound play in my head over and over again and then I cried out in shock. I’ve heard this yell many times before, seeing as my class was always getting yelled at for misbehaving. It was Mrs. Starky! “If only I could fly to the mill and save her!” I said aloud. And for some reason I began getting the idea that I could fly. I opened up my window all the way, placed my feet on the ledge and jumped. I closed my eyes as I felt myself let go of the ledge until I realized I was floating. I was flying! I knew what I had to do. I immediately began flying to the mill. When I got there the air wreaked of pulp. I knocked loudly on the mill’s doors. “Mrs. Starky!” I yelled out. “Hello? Angela?!” My teacher replied. “Angela, please can you try pulling on the door? Maybe it’s not locked on your side.” I placed my hands on the cold handle and pulled as hard as I could and the door went flying behind me and crashed into a tree, knocking it over. We both gasped. “Oh Angela!” Mrs. Starky cried. “Thank you so much. Your rotten supply teacher locked me in here and told me that she was going to take over the class to steal my job. I’ve known her from a while back and she was always jealous of me.” Mrs. Starky continued to cry and I told her not to tell anyone about my powers, and I flew her home. Well, that’s how my crime fighting job began. I save people all the time now! And if the supply teacher knew I was going to foil her plans...she would’ve given up sooner.
