Today we take a look at electricity conservation at municipal buildings Page 5 DurhamDurham Daily News Every weekday at noon Region holding clinics in November By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — A delay in vaccine production has caused Durham Region to delay its immunization clinics this year. The universal flu vaccine pro- gram will begin later this season than in previous years due to a delay in production of the vac- cine. The Region’s health department normally holds immunization clinics the third week in October, according to Karen Clarke, a public health nurse with the Region. Im- munization clinics for the general public have now been postponed until mid-November. High-risk individuals, including seniors, will receive a different al- lotment of the vaccine, which Ms. Clarke said should be available in the next couple of weeks. Residents shouldn’t worry that the delay will affect their health, Ms. Clarke said. “It is not likely to have any im- pacts based on the trend we have seen,” Ms. Clarke said. “We don’t anticipate there will be a huge problem in terms of not having that vaccination as early as we usually do.” In the past few years, Ms. Clarke said, the flu has started to affect people in late November or early December. “So, for people getting the vacci- nation, the later it is given the lon- ger the effectiveness,” Ms. Clarke said. During the 2005-06 flu season, the health department vaccinat- ed more than 11,000 residents at community clinics and Ms. Clarke recommends all residents who are eligible receive the vaccine. All Ontario residents over the age of six months are eligible for the Flu shot delayed ✦ See Flu, Page 2 A CLASSIC MOVE Jason Liebregts / News Advertiser photo DURHAM — Notre Dame’s Nicholle Mckenzie defends as Savitry Phomsaphao from G. PICKERING — A Pickering councillor facing fraud charges will next appear in court Wednes- day, Nov. 29. A lawyer representing Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner and the Crown attorney met for a pre-trial hearing in On- tario Superior Court of Justice in Oshawa on Oct. 4. Coun. Brenner was charged in May after Pickering officials filed a report with Durham Regional Police following an internal City review. He is alleged to have sub- mitted false documents for reim- bursement claims and clerical services for more than $5,400 between 1999 and 2000. He faces two counts each of fraud under $5,000 and utter forged document, and breach of trust by a public officer. With the next court date falling at the end of November, the issue will not be resolved until after the Nov. 13 municipal election in which Coun. Brenner is seeking re-election. Peter-John Sidebottom of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing said a guilty find- ing for an elected official would only impact the outcome of an election if the sentence involved jail time. “The only rule that exists is if a person is in jail under a sentence then they lose qualifications as an elector,” he said. If this happens they can not hold an elected office and so the position would become vacant. Mr. Sidebottom said if a pen- alty involves a fine or a suspend- ed sentence, an elected official found guilty of an offence could continue to serve. A large quantity of drugs, in- cluding marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy, were seized from the Gurr Crescent home after a search warrant was executed at the property, Durham police said. Police were originally called to the home last Wednesday, Oct. 4, after a report several men had entered the residence and con- fronted a man inside. Schools in the area were locked down while police searched for sus- pects, eventually arresting one man and recovering a handgun. Cops sought a warrant after of- ficers entered the house in search of other suspects. A search of the home that night yielded 27 pocket bikes and a haul of drugs valued at $25,000, police said. Bruce Mehmet, 21, and 24- year-old Timur Mehmet are each charged with three counts of pos- session for the purpose of traf- ficking, production of marijuana and breach of probation. The election is Nov. 13. RE YOU BEING SERVED?AA OSHAWA Oshawa passed the energy efficiency test. Late-night drivebys at the Civic Centre and adjoining fields, Northview Library and nearby community centre, as well as the joint animal services-park services building on Farewell Street, revealed only security lighting, though it is questionable whether a display window at Northview Community Cen- tre needed to be illuminated at mid- night. The City Hall facilities were also scouted, and the McLaughlin Library, McLaughlin Art Gallery and the Arts Resources Centre were appropriately darkened. The office towers -- particu- larly the north face of Rundle Tower -- had several floors illuminated, how- ever. WHITBY The sports complexes were all lit up from inside. The McKinney Cen- tre not only had the interior hallway lights on, but the lighting behind each of the billboards was also still on. The library was definitely worst of all. It not only had all the indoor and outdoor lights on, but the outdoor water fountain was flowing full stream and was also lit up in its entirety. Town Hall did a good job though, with only a few random security lights on. CLARINGTON Late-night drivebys revealed most municipal facilities had limited energy use to half-lit parking lots and build- ing lobbies, which are necessary for security purposes. The community centres, as well as the Clarington Resource Centre, passed the test. But several floors on the west side of the municipal hall were lit up like Christ- mas trees, however, and the adjoin- ing library also received poor marks, with about half of the main floor space illuminated. The floodlights at South Courtice Community Centre’s soccer fields were also in full force, though, as a game had just recently concluded. Perhaps a little slack can be given. AJAX Appeared to do quite poorly over- all. The library had enough lights on to light up the night sky, although, according to chief librarian, Geoff Nie, “The building is designed to appear much brighter than it actually is, due to the glass design and high-efficiency lighting.” The McLean Community Centre also tugged at the power sup- ply until after midnight. According to Renato Perin, manager of building maintenance for Ajax, many of the To wn’s buildings are equipped with photocell technology. Incidentally, both the Village Arena as well as com- munity centre were also caught with a large number of lights on. UXBRIDGE The Township office lights were off and they were locked up tight, with the exception of one or two lights left running for security reasons, however they are making the effort to cut back on electricity consumption as all the other Township offices are. BROCK No energy consump- tion issues were noted. They had unnecessary lights off in the middle of the afternoon and had only one or two lights on at night as needed for their cleaning crews. However, this may not always be the case and lights set with motion detectors might be useful in these situations, ensuring that they will go off after a certain amount of time of inactivity in a room. SCUGOG The Township hall’s energy usage after hours is minimal. Again, just lights as needed at night for when cleaning is performed, but nothing out of the ordinary. Again, motion-sensors for the lights could be use- ful, so that if ever a light switch isn’t flicked off at the end of the day the lights will at least go off at the end of the night. REGION The Regional Municipality of Durham headquarters on Ross- land Road had decent, but not excessive lighting, at the front entrance and parking lots. Inside, most lights were off past midnight, with the exception of a few offices here and there and a larger section that, presumably, was being cleaned. Overall, it seemed a conscientious effort was being made to conserve energy where possible. Part 3 of 4: Electricity Conservation Are You Being Served is a four-part series looking at municipal service from the first-person per- spective. We sent anonymous jour- nalists to get a taxpayer’s view of service at munici- pal depart- ments, recycling at municipal facilities, energy conservation and municipal web sites. PICKERING Not so great in this department. City Hall and the library were lit up well into the night. Judy Hodgson, manager of customer and administrative servic- es, commented they were security lights and that the lights needed to remain on for the cleaning staff to come in from about 10:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Simi- larly, the lights and tele- vision screens were left on at the Pickering Rec- reation Complex. Once again, it was done for the cleaning staff. The most energy-efficient public buildings in Pickering were the Ve r idian and OPG buildings. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 15, 2006 PAGE 5 A/Pdurhamregion.com durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, OCTOBER 15, 2006 EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR Generous gift a boost to UOIT The creation of the University of Ontario Institute of Tech- nology a few years ago was the result of a team effort which involved many people pulling together to make a Durham-based university a reality. And now, with a little help from its friends, UOIT is poised to move ahead in the next phase in its development. Ontario’s newest university was the recent recipient of a gift that was an absolute 10 on the “Wow” scale. As university staff, students and supporters watched in antici- pation, a $2-million cash donation was provided to UOIT by its north Durham neighbours, Windfields Farm and Tribute Com- munities. The incredibly generous present allows the school to move ahead to purchase some of the equipment it needs to provide the state-of-the-art technology required to deliver a first-class education. Present to hand over the cash were Judy Mappin of Wind- fields and Noreen Taylor, E.P. Taylor’s daughter-in-law, along with Howard Sokolowski, CEO of Tribute Communities. In addition, federal finance minister Jim Flaherty, also Whitby-Os- hawa MP, was a part of the celebration. It was Mr. Flaherty who, in his role as finance minister in the former provincial Conser- vative government, made the announcement in 2001 that UOIT would be constructed. The Province was represented by Chris Bentley, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. All were naturally pleased by the gift which serves as the perfect example for others who wish to donate and become a key part of the impressive new educational facility. UOIT is con- stantly growing and will continue to add buildings and students as it fills out over the next few years. But there is always a need for funding and, while teaching, research and learning are the essential components of any post- secondary institution, the need for a steady supply of dollars -- not just from the government -- is also urgent. It’s great to see such important and successful organizations who have so much faith in the future of UOIT. It only bodes well for all of us. Resident doesn’t miss the buses To the editor: This morning as I opened my front door I felt there was some- thing missing - It seemed so peaceful. I finally realized that the usual roar of those diesel engines from buses was missing. The sensation felt like the relief after the cessation of being hit over the head. It felt so good. I live near Glenanna Road, opposite the Pickering Town Centre. There are several bus stops here. But buses don’t just service these stops and go on their way; this seems to be a termi- nus point so buses ‘park’ here for a length of time - WITH THE ENGINES RUNNING. We hear this constant roar and smell the aroma of diesel. In a newsletter from our regional councillor, Rick Johnson, he proudly announced a new regulation of a three-minute limit for idling vehicles. I inquired why this did not include our buses and was told it did. A transit representative also replied, con- firming that bus drivers must comply. Well folks, I’m here to say they do not comply to the three-minute limit. I find it astound- ing that these bus drivers are so irresponsible that they continue to contribute to noise pollution as well as the ‘greenhouse’ effect with diesel emissions not to mention the waste of our tax dollars by running their buses unnecessarily. I realize this transit strike is a great inconvenience to many, but I would be a happy camper if the buses never ran again. Robert D.N. W ell, all the candidates are signed up and ready to run -- of course some have surely already knocked on your door and asked for your vote come Nov. 13. Or they’ve asked you to mail it in once the time comes to do so. Who you choose to vote for depends on where you live, which candidates you know, what you believe in and how strongly you feel about the issues which affect you. Yo u can check the Internet -- durhamre- gion.com has excellent candidate profiles, election blogs; many candidates also have their own websites you can access. You can also call candidates, attend candidate meet-and-greets or forums and, of course, jaw with them at the doorstep. But what should you ask them and what should you demand? Here are a few sug- gestions about what you should expect based on feedback received over the past few municipal terms: 1. No wage increases above the rate of inflation during the next four years. This demand includes all benefits and expenses as well. Over the last three years, depending on where you live, council- lors have had multiple raises, most well in excess of inflation. Nothing upsets voters more than putting someone in office and seeing them turn around a few months later and give themselves a massive raise. Make sure your candidate promises you he or she will not vote for anything beyond an annual cost-of-living bump. That’s fair. 2. Demand accountability from your candidates. Yo u should expect an answer when you call, e-mail, fax or write your elected repre- sentative. Make sure candidates promise they’ll get back to you if you have a ques- tion or problem that requires their atten- tion. Any decent rep should return your call or e-mail within 24-48 hours of receiving it and on a Monday or Tuesday if you call or e-mail over the weekend. 3. Expect decency and openness from candidates. Candidates should be able to promise you that they’ll occasionally offer to meet with you at your convenience or call a meeting of a neighbourhood group to talk directly to voters about specific problems. Some elected reps have monthly or bi- monthly meetings with their ward con- stituents. All candidates should do so. And you have the right to be treated with respect and dignity when you do come to council or when you contact your representative. 4. Finally, if your councillor is paid a full- time salary, expect full-time performance. Local and regional councillors, includ- ing mayors, should be working a full week. There is no excuse for missing meetings (unless on other municipal business or illness), being late for meetings, not being fully briefed on all agenda items and not knowing proper council procedure. Any councillor who falls short in any of these areas doesn’t deserve the job. So there you have it -- demand profes- sionalism from the candidates. After all, you’re the boss -- you’re paying them. And for most people, chances are it also means you’ll have to deal with some type of health condition. One of the most common conditions people encounter as they age is osteoarthritis (OA). It is caused by a deterioration of cartilage in your joints – usually in the hips, knees, hands or feet, which happens from years of using those joints. The good news is that there are a number of things a person with OA can do to continue living a healthy and active life. “To deal with the pain caused by OA, I rec- ommend to most of my patients that they start with acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol Arthritis Pain, which is also recom- mended as fi rst-line treatment by the Cana- dian Rheumatology Association,” says Dr. Algis Jovaisas, Ottawa rheumatologist. Dr. Jovaisas also recommends that patients incorporate other types of techniques to help with pain reduction such as: • Exercise: swimming, walking and stretch- ing may reduce joint pain and stiffness • Weight reduction: excess weight puts ad- ditional stress on weight-bearing joints such as hips and knees • Heat and cold: Pain may be relieved by taking a warm bath or shower, using a heating pad or applying a cold compress • Joint protection: using a splint or brace allows joints to rest and protects them from injury • Massage: a therapist can help by massag- ing tight muscles, increasing blood fl ow and bringing warmth to a stressed body area • Physiotherapy: to improve muscle strength and tone and help maintain or re- store normal joint movement and relieve stiffness If you have questions about the medica- tions you are taking to treat your OA, talk to your health care provid- er. Also, a new “Putting Your Pain Into Words” checklist is available on the Canadian Pharma- cists Association Web site (www.pharmacists. ca) or at www.tylenol.ca to help people better de- scribe their pain, so their health care provider can more effectively help them. The existing plaza is built on a 10.7 acre site at the southeast corner of Bayly Street and St. Martin’s Drive. The plaza will be redeveloped and a new mixed use community will be built by S & R Development Group Ltd., The Rose Corporation and Chestnut Hill Homes. The master plan for the redevelopment proposal approved by Council includes: •Approximately 25,500 square feet of retail-commercial space excluding 15 live-work units along St. Martins Drive •Two residential towers one 18 storeys and the other 16 storeys – with a total of 411 condominium suites rising from the same two-storey podium that houses the commercial space •121 condominium townhomes •85,853 sq. ft. or approximately 2 acres of green space, parkland and playground located along the Douglas Ravine and within the development as parkland and playgrounds The redevelopment was designed by a team of professional urban plan- ners, architects, traffic/ transportation experts, landscape architects, noise/ vibration experts and environmental consultants. The design complies with Pickering’s Official Plan, which went through an extensive public con- sultation process, as well as Durham Region’s Official Plan and Ontario’s Places to Grow Act. The developers conducted extensive discussions with area stakeholders over 18 months to address concerns and ensure that the redevelopment results in the best neighbourhood possible. In response to feedback, they made approximately 30 changes to the initial design. Following are the facts about the approved redevelopment: RESIDENTIAL The high-rise buildings will offer a wide range of one and two bedroom designs, with the development stepping down in height to the town- homes, most having rooftop gardens. The development will be ideal for a broad range of purchasers, from first-time buyers and young families to empty nesters. Both the retail and residential components would be of the highest quality in design and construction by well-respected Chestnut Hill Homes. TRAFFIC Despite the traffic studies conducted by the developer and the regional staff’s own conclusions that there isn’t a requirement for a traffic light; at this time, the developer has committed to fund signalized traffic lights to be installed at St. Martin’s and Bayly with a northbound, left-turning lane on St. Martin’s, and a turning lane added along Bayly allowing for right-in and right-out traffic. New sidewalks will be constructed along Bayly Street and St. Martin’s Drive and throughout the new development, creating a pedestrian-friendly environment for residents, shoppers and passersby. PARKING There will be more than adequate parking to support this transit oriented, pedestrian-friendly redevelopment. Surface parking will consist of 70 spaces for shoppers and visitors alike, which is typical in any develop- ment project throughout the GTA In addition, each townhome will have two parking spots and there will be 48 visitor spaces located in an under- ground parking garage. BAY RIDGES REDEVELOPMENT A NEW BEGINNING – CHANGE IS NEVER EASY DENSITY The Town of Pickering’s Official Plan (OP) has designated the Bay Ridges Plaza site as a “Detailed Review Area” containing ‘mixed uses’ and hous- ing accommodation. The density in the proposed redevelopment is con- sistent with the City and Regional OP’s and the Province’s Smart Growth policies. RETAIL COMPONENT The developer intends to lease the commercial space to existing or new retail tenants that provide product and services which will satisfy the neighbourhood’s needs. By phasing in the redevelopment, arrangements are being finalized for certain existing tenants to continue serving you - their clients and customers. ENVIRONMENT Positive feedback from the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) indicates that the redevelopment is environmentally responsible, sustainable and supportive. Approximately 65,546 sq. ft. or approximately 1.5 acres of the Bay Ridges site will be given over to the TRCA to be pre- served as public parkland/open space and to help preserve and enhance Douglas Ravine. An additional 23,978 sq. ft. or approximately 2.61 acres would be set aside for the community’s landscaped park and green space, including a children’s playground. Chestnut Hill Homes will construct the community to the highest standards in energy conservation. SUSTAINABILITY Located less than five minutes from the Pickering GO Station, the new Bay Ridges would be a transit-supportive development that reflects the province’s Smart Growth initiative and the City of Pickering’s OP. The design will contribute to reduced fossil fuel consumption and the atten- dant environmental issues of global warming and greenhouse gases. The developers will spend $2 million to replace sanitary sewers to the Liverpool pumping station to assist in resolving the current problem of sanitary/storm water backing up into the basements of homes west of Liverpool Road. The redevelopment will result in approximately $1.5 mil- lion in tax revenue, which is about a ten-fold increase in taxes currently derived from the property, plus $6.5 million in development charges that will be used for infrastructure renewal. THE WHOLE PICTURE The Bay Ridges Plaza redevelopment will launch a new beginning for Pickering’s Bay Ridges area. The resulting mixed use community will have a positive impact by generating economic gain for the City, adding to its tax base and revitalizing an under-utilized facility. Through master-planning that accommodates critical input from government and local stakeholders, the design is practical, environmentally responsible and sustainable. The rejuvenated, transit and pedestrian-friendly community will provide excit- ing new opportunities to live, work and shop in Bay Ridges. www.sanfranciscobythebay.com 905.831.3631 All renderings are artist concept durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 12 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 15, 2006 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 15, 2006 PAGE 13 A/Pdurhamregion.com NE032G103 © 2003. That’s because it will be one for all, and all for one when the elementary school relay team competes in the 26-mile (42.2 kilo- metres) Toronto Marathon relay race today (Sunday). The Frenchman’s Bay team will be one of about 200 to compete at the Toronto Mara- thon relay race and, according to the team’s coach Chris Williamson, the first elementary school team to take part. The relay race is at Mel Lastman Square at around 9:30 a.m. this morning and ends at Queen’s Park. Members of the Frenchman’s Bay team will take up positions at various points along the marathon route, and each relay runner will run a leg of the course, with the longest stretch being 6.5 kilometres. Michau Perreira, a Grade 7 student at Frenchman’s Bay, will run the final leg of the race. “I’m nervous about running the last leg,” he says. “I don’t want to trip and fall and lose the race.” Meanwhile, Sarah Forde, a Grade 8 stu- dent, will run a 5.5-kilometre leg of the mara- thon, starting at historic Casa Loma. She says marathons run in her family, as her father has run marathons in the past. They hope to run a marathon together in the future. Sarah’s looking forward to running and beating a good number of the teams in the relay field. “I think we can beat a lot of the older teams,” she says, adding she and her team- mates are also looking forward to a pre-race spaghetti dinner while in Toronto. Kim Goode, a Grade 7 student, is no stranger to running long distances, having competed at triathlon events 13 times. She’s also looking forward to a good result. Williamson said the Frenchman’s Bay team ran at the school’s annual Terry Fox Run as a tune-up race, putting together a time of three hours and 15 minutes. He notes if the team can duplicate that result at the Toronto Mara- thon, they could finish in the top 20 teams. “We’re expecting a time of between 3:10 and 3:30. We should be able to upset some of the adult teams,” he says. Williamson says the idea to form a mara- thon relay team at the school came after he had completed a half-marathon last year. “In talking to some of the kids, they were kind of interested in it,” says Williamson. Upon checking into the Toronto Marathon, it was discovered that there was an age re- striction of 18 and over to run in the actual marathon; there was, however, no age restric- tion on the relay event. After putting out a call for athletes to take part in the marathon relay team, more than eight students were interested in joining, says Williamson. That meant a tryout would be needed to arrive at the eight-member squad. The final co-ed relay team was chosen with three each from Grade 7 and 8 at the west Pickering school and two from Grade 6. All team members, says Williamson, possess a background in cross-country running, with the exception of Brayden Schnur, who’s a nationally-ranked tennis player. Other team members are Maxine Cudlip, Alexandra Max- well, Dustin Giglio and Megan Kimble. Training started in September, says Wil- liamson, with the group running three ki- lometres originally, but gradually working its way up to running six kilometres dur- ing training sessions. The group trained two times a week at school and each team mem- ber had been asked to run on their own on weekends, “and they’ve all done it. “They haven’t complained at all about how far we’re running,” he says. Williamson says a marathon relay team could be formed at the school again next year. photo by Jennifer Roberts Frenchman’s Bay Public School relay team members are competing in Toronto today. photo by Rob Mitchell Hornet’s nest PICKERING - To r onto wrestler and WWE Hall of Famer Tony ‘The Hornet’ Atlas puts the Notori- ous VID from Las Vegas in a painfull headlock at the recent WWF Legends of Wrestling event at the Pickering Markets. Adam Engel, 14, won the cov- eted boys’ title at the annual Fall Foliage Squash Tourna- ment at Dartmouth University, the Ivy League school in Ha- nover, New Hampshire. He competed in the under- 15 age group against 24 of the best players in the U.S. In the championship game, Engel won comfortably by a 3-1 margin over Brandon McLaughlin, of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, the No. 2-ranked player in the U.S. Earlier in the day, the Grade 9 student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School de- feated the reigning U.S. age-group cham- pion, Christopher Jung, from Mercer Island, Wisconsin., 3-2 in a dramatic battle that was decided 9-7 in the fifth game. At the end of the Fall Foliage event, Engel received his victory certificate from John Power, the squash coach at Dartmouth College and the father of legendary Canadian world cham- pion, Jonathon Power. Last month, Engel was chosen to represent Canada against an all-star U.S. contingent at the annual ‘Battle of the Borders’ at the White Oaks resort in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where he was also victorious. Additionally, Engel was chosen as most valuable player of the Canadian team. Engel trains with the local pro, James Hayes, at the Pickering Recreation Complex, whom he credits for these impressive re- sults. Genosha Hotel gets historical desig n a t i o n Councillor says move will leave building ‘sterile’ By Lesley Bovie OSHAWA — The City has designat-ed the Genosha Hotel as historically significant despite warnings from some councillors who feel it will only seal the fate of the tired downtown building. “It’s an eyesore in the City of Osha-wa and that building will sit there for the next 20 years and be sterile,” said Councillor Mike Nicholson before council approved the designation Monday night by a vote of 8-3. “I don’t think there’s anyone in the City of Oshawa, that if we were to take the building down now, wouldn’t do a dance,” he added. Oshawa’s first luxury hotel, the Genosha was built in 1929 but has fallen on hard times in recent decades. The glam-our of its upper floors has given way to a rooming house. A strip club that operated on the main floor was closed in 2003. But Heritage Oshawa has asked the City to designate the hotel based on its cultural signifi- cance as part of the emerging iden-tity of Oshawa as a corporate centre. The designation only applies to the exterior facade of the Chicago-style building and its Art Deco features. Any proposal to change those fea-tures would have to come before Oshawa council first, said develop-ment services commissioner Ted Goodchild. But the Ontario Heritage Act does have a process that allows owners to negotiate in such cases, he said. Coun. Louise Parkes said there will be programs available to help developers fund any changes they would want to make to the building. “The reason we did this is because the owner wanted to make (the Genosha) a tuna can by putting alu-minum siding on it,” she said. “That’s not acceptable for an international Communities in Bloom winner.” Store keeper stabbed, slashed during robbery attempt C redits neighbours with helping stop attack By Jeff Mitchell OSHAWA — Shopkeeper Jian Zhang has a new appre-ciation for his south Oshawa neighbours, after several of them intervened when he was attacked by a knife-wielding robber Monday. Mr. Zhang, 46, was stabbed and slashed during the morning attack, receiving cuts and abra-sions to his face, neck and arms. His attacker was grabbed and wrestled to the ground by citi-zens, who held the suspect until police arrived. Mr. Zhang and his wife, Xioa Aoqiu Lan, were working at Ray’s Smoke Shop in a plaza at Simcoe Street South and Ritson Road South around 10:30 Mon-day morning when the man, armed with a knife, entered the store. “The guy just came in and jumped onto the counter,” Mr. Zhang said. “He didn’t say anything; he just jumped up and attacked me. I didn’t even OPUC a b right light in worker safety OSHAWA — The City’s utility is proving itself a real spark plug when it comes to workplace safety. Oshawa Power and Utilities Corpo-ration (OPUC) recently received the Electrical and Utilities Safety Associ-ation’s silver award. OPUC was one of three utilities in Ontario that won the award, which recognizes utilities that have demon-strated their knowledge and applica-tion of safety systems throughout the workplace. Staff at Oshawa PUC Networks Inc., the main affiliate of OPUC, have completed more than 600,000 hours of work without a lost-time incident. “We challenge ourselves to strive for excellence in our daily operations, while keeping the safety of our staff and customers as our No. 1 priority,” said Jeff Rosenthal, OPUC president and CEO. “I am extremely proud of all our staff who have contributed to our company receiving this honour.” 0IERRE%LLIOTT4RUDEAU;0UBLIC=/SHAWA 0ARENTSAVGEDUCATIONYRS NA ,ASTYRS 'RTESTWRITERS2ANKNA !CADEMIC0ERFORMANCE 4RENDS 'RADE2EADINGNANANA AVERAGE7RITINGNANANA LEVEL-ATHNANANA 'RADE2EADING N A NANA AVERAGE 7 RITINGNANANA LEVEL -ATHNANANA 2EADING NANA&& & NA NA %--NA NA Sales are off, but Oshawa car plant tops in productivity By Jillian Follert OSHAWA — It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Last week, General Motors of Canada accepted its second major award in less than a month, as officials mulled over declining sales figures for May. According to the 2005 Harbour Report released Thursday, Osha-wa’s Plant 1 is the most productive vehicle assembly plant in North America, clocking 15.85 hours per vehicle. This recognition came on the heels of last month’s J.D. Power and Associates survey, in which Plant 2 captured the gold award for quality, with only 85 problems reported per 100 vehicles. “Oshawa car plant employees can be proud of their No. 1 rank-ing in productivity on top of their world-renowned quality awards,” said Canadian Auto Workers Presi-dent Buzz Hargrove. “Our Cana-dian members are well-positioned to play in the very challenging automotive global arena of quality and productivity.” Despite this silver lining, the company continues to report declining sales, while the Cana-dian market saw the worst new vehicle sales performance for the month of May, since 1999. “The Canadian market is dead flat, it’s a very negative outlook,” said Dennis DesRosiers, one of the country’s leading auto industry analysts. “It has a lot to do with the U.S. market, which has been very poor for a while now. If the Ameri-cans aren’t buying cars, we aren’t producing them.” This is especially worrying for GM Canada, which exports about 90 per cent of its Canadian-made vehicles, to the U.S. In May, GM Canada saw a 13 per cent drop in total car sales compared with the same period last year, and a 3.3 per cent drop in combined vehicle sales. In year-to-date figures, the com-pany reports only a 1.9 per cent drop in total car sales, however the May statistics are considered more significant as that is traditionally the best-selling month of the year for dealers. The two teams faced off for an exhibition Ontario Basketball Association major atom match at Father Leo J. Austin school in Whitby on Monday. The wildcats won the game 65-22. Tra ffic study reveals problem areas By David Blumenfeld WHITBY — The public works department wants to install a series of rumble strips in two locations along Garrard Road and Fallingbrook Street, following a preliminary analysis of traffic in seven locations around Whitby. Traverse rumble strips — textured pavement used to create an uneven travelling surface for cars and vehicles — are employed to emphasize critical intersections, pedestrian crossings and control driver speed. They are also considered a more cost-effective alternative to stop signs or “bump-outs,” which narrow roads at critical intersections and can cost up to $50,000, public works reported. Following a week-long study of traffic in September and October 2004, the department wants council to authorize rumble strips at Garrard Road and Weldon Street, and Fallingbrook Street at Glen Dhu Public School, beginning in May at a cost of $20,000. The Strikers faced the Oakville Raiders, the winner of the South Region Elite Soccer League. Ajax would get their revenge on the Oakville squad, which defeated the Strikers in overtime in the final of the prestigious Robbie Internation- al Soccer Tournament in July. The Strikers captured the Dunleavy Cup with a 4-0 victory. On a wet Sunday morning recent- ly, the Ajax Strikers were firing on all cylinders, netting the first goal only 45 seconds into the match. Brian Wright beat the Oakville defence down the left side prior to passing it to Dylan Cherry who slotted it into the net. The score held until the start of the second half when the Strikers blew the game open with three more goals. The other scorers were Jordan Dover, Ben Cowman and Kyle Powell. Xander Huggins was outstanding in goal, turning away everything that was shot at him. This victory came a week after the Ajax squad captured the Cen- tral Soccer League Cup by defeating Unionville 2–0. Cowman started the scoring and Dylan Cherry chipped in with the second goal with min- utes left in the game. Playing out of the CSL’s Premier division, the Strikers finished first while going undefeated with a 16- 0-2 overall record. The team was defined by outstanding defensive play, allowing only seven goals against all season long while, at the same time, scoring more goals than any other team with 72. The 2006 outdoor season repre- sented the fifth consecutive season the team went undefeated in league play, dating back to when the team played in the Durham Boys’ Soccer League in the under-eight division. Early in the season, the Strikers defended their West Niagara tour- nament title by coming first among 16 teams. Next up for the Strikers was the prestigious Robbie International Soccer Tournament. In a field of 32 teams, the Strikers reached the final against the Oakville Raiders. In a see-saw affair, the Strikers took a second-half lead only to have the Raiders score with minutes left in the game to force sudden-death overtime. In what would be the Strikers only defeat of the season, Oakville scored early into the first overtime period. The Ajax Strikers didn’t wait long to atone for the loss and to seek their revenge against the Raiders. In the semifinal of the Ontario Cup, the Strikers outplayed the Raiders but were unable to find the back of the net. After extra time, the game proceeded to penalty shots where the Strikers prevailed behind stellar goaltending and clinical shooting, missing only once to three misses by Oakville. The victory pushed the Ajacians to the Ontario Cup final in early September where they played the Brampton East Snipers. Again, the game ended in a scoreless draw and needed to be decided by pen- alty shots. In a close contest, Dylan Cherry scored the clinching penalty shot and Huggins made the final stop to give the Strikers the presti- gious crown. Overall, the Ajax Strikers played 43 games, posting a 39-1-3 record. More remarkably, the Strikers scored 170 goals while allowing only 13. Private partnership suggested for sports dome By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — The ever- popular sport of soccer may soon be able to be played in Pickering all-year round. Wa rd 3 Regional Council- lor Rick Johnson introduced a motion at the Oct. 10 coun- cil meeting requesting staff investigate the feasibility of building a multi-purpose sports dome in Pickering using a private partnership. “This type of facility is something that is much need in the community,” he said. The facility could be used for other activities in addi- tion to soccer. The motion reports the Pickering Soccer Club has a membership of more than 4,200 players and a waiting list of more than 200. It says indoor soccer offers an inex- pensive alternative for fami- lies when compared to tradi- tional winter sports such as hockey. Coun. Johnson is hop- ing, through the staff inves- tigation, the facility will be able to be built at no cost to taxpayers. “We need some kind of private partnership,” he said. “We’re in a day and age where we need partner- ships.” Wa rd 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson is pleased the facility won’t be just a single use one. “It’s an excellent way to go,” he said, adding public- private partnerships will be- come more common as time goes on. Wa rd 1 Regional Council- lor Maurice Brenner thought a sports dome would be well used in the community. “Something of this nature will go a long way to not only address our waiting list for soccer, but also for other sporting activities,” he said. Wa rd 3 City Councillor David Pickles also expressed his support. “A facility like this would be welcome,” he said. “Hope- fully, it will come to fruition and be a jewel in our com- munity.” Coun. Johnson hoped staff would “stick their teeth into” this while council was not meeting during the elec- tion campaign so they could come back with something early in the new term. “We all agree we do need an indoor-soccer facility,” he said. He visited one in Au- rora and said, “it was just breathtaking.” The motion passed unani- mously. THRIFTY MECHANIC SHOP Inc.
