The ruling, released Monday, means Tonya Kutsukake is spared the 12-month term of incarceration im- posed by Ontario Court Justice Don- ald Halikowski last October. Instead, the young woman has been ordered to serve an 18-month con- ditional sentence, which will include nine months of house arrest. Appeals Court judges ruled Justice Halikowski had erred when he reject- ed the conditional sentence suggested by Ms. Kutsukake’s lawyer after she pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death for her role in the inci- dent that claimed the life of 15-year- old Derek Cameron in March of 2005. The teen, who was wearing in-line skates, held onto the 20-year-old Ms. Kutsukake’s car as she drove it down a residential Pickering street. In his ruling Justice Halikowski noted that after trying the stunt at a relatively low speed, Ms. Kutsukake sped her Dodge Neon up to 80 km/h with the boy clinging to the vehicle; it was then he fell and sustained fatal head injuries. In passing sentence the judge took into account Ms. Kutsukake’s youth, the absence of a criminal record, her guilty plea and her genuine remorse. But he rejected a conditional sen- tence, saying his ruling had to send a clear message of denunciation and deterrence. After a hearing in Toronto in August, Court of Appeal judges ruled Justice Halikowski should have considered house arrest and crafted a conditional sentence that would be more appro- priate for the youthful, first-time of- BURST OF SPEED Debbie Stobbart photo Ajax-Pickering Dolphins’ Denver Wright (30) turns upfield with the ball, while fending off a Scarborough Thunder tackler, during Central Ontario Minor Football League atom division action at Scarborough’s L’Amoreaux Park on Sunday after- noon. If approved, work on refurbishing four ‘B’ reactor would begin in about a decade By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer PICKERING — Ontario Power Gener- ation is trying to make its case that four reactors at the Pickering nuclear station should be refurbished. “We’re moving forward with the Pickering ‘B’ life extension and refur- bishment,” said Tom Mitchell, senior vice-president for the ‘B’ side. Laurie Swami, the director of licenc- ing for plant life extension project, noted a business case will be developed for the ‘B’ refurbishment. “We haven’t made the assumption we’ll be doing the refur- bishment,” she added. Last December, the Ontario Power Authority released a report that recom- mended more nuclear reactors be built, while existing reactors be refurbished. The provincial government agreed and told OPG to start working on an environ- mental assessment to refurbish the four ‘B’ side units. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Com- mission will ultimately decide if the four ‘B’ units are refurbished. OPG is working on the EA, which is part of the business case. Speaking to the Community Advisory Council on Tuesday, Ms. Swami said any refurbishing work would start in about 10 years and would take between 24 and 30 months for each unit. “The plants will be at the end of their lives in about 10 years,” she stated, add- ing that after the reactors are rebuilt, they will be able to run for another 30 years, which would be “the very edge of life they can go.” Similar refurbishment work was done on Units 1 and 4 on the ‘A’ side, while the company decided Units 2 and 3 couldn’t be economically refurbished, and the process of mothballing them has begun. Wo rk on the ‘A’ side was plagued by extensive cost overruns and missed deadlines. “On the ‘A’ side, we didn’t have the key infrastructure in place when we started the work. This time, we will,” Ms. Swami said. Should OPG get the go-ahead to re- build the units, all four reactors won’t be shutdown at the same time, she noted. “It’s not our preference to have three or four units in that state. We don’t have the capacity to do all at once,” Ms. Swami stated. “It’s our best guess the Ontario Power Authority won’t want us to shut all four at First stop at Pickering Town Centre this Saturday By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — The plan for the future of health care in Durham is going on tour. Afterwards, volunteers from the nine local advisory teams, along with board members and staff from the Central East LHIN, are going to be in local shopping malls and community cen- tres in late this month and in early October asking the public for feedback on the draft plan. “We’re interested in hearing what people have to say about the plan be- fore it is presented to the ministry (of health),” said Foster Loucks, chairman of the Central East LHIN board of di- rectors. “This is a document that is being developed by the community, for the community and will be owned by the community. It will have a positive im- pact on the future health of our fami- lies and neighbours.” Volunteers from across the LHIN helped write the plan and open houses in the spring, attended by more than 1,000, helped the LHIN staff and board OPG pushing to have Pickering reactors restored ✦ See Plan, Page A2 ✦ See Woman, Page A4 HI-TECH WHEELS Oshawa key to fuel-cell vehicle Wheels pullout FOOD AND FUNDS United Way serves up treats, sets campaign target Page A8 ✦ See Our, Page A4 [ What’s On ] Helping youth to a healthy weight PICKERING — Eating right, getting fit and having fun are in store at the Youth Centre. Health care providers and community resi- dents, participating on either local advisory teams or regional networks, worked with Central East LHIN staff over the summer to provide grass- roots direction on the three key health care priori- ties identified. They are: seamless care for seniors; chronic disease prevention and management; and, men- tal health and addictions. The final integrated health service plan is to be published in mid-November. It will outline the local vision for health care, provide information on current and future demo- graphics and health care needs and identify key priorities for change. “We’re really laying the groundwork for the kind of system we’ve heard people want,” said James Meloche, senior director of planning, inte- gration and community engagement. Through the sessions, he said, the LHIN staff and volunteers will be available to answer ques- tions and take feedback on the integrated health service plan. But, Mr. Meloche said, it is also an opportunity to educate the public further about the LHINs. “We want to give them a sense of the future of health care in the province and their community,” he said. The LHIN is responsible for planning, co-or- dinating, integrating and funding health care services at the local level, including hospitals, community care access centres, long-term-care facilities, community health centres, community support services and mental health and addiction services. It will use the plan as a strategic guide for the future delivery of these services. For more information about the plan, visit www. centraleastlhin.on.ca or call 1-866-804-5446. PAGE A3 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ September 27, 2006 A/P Regional council endorses Friends of Ajax Pickering Hospital priorities By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — The Friends of the Ajax Pickering Hospital want to see their hos- pital developed as the major hospital serving Ajax, Pickering, Whitby and west Durham - but not all on Regional Council agree. Council received a letter from Yvonne Bosch and Bill Parish, Friends co-chairs, asking council to endorse their priorities. The five identified priorities are basic objectives it urged the Central East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) to achieve. The Central East LHIN is in the process of preparing its first integrated health services plan, scheduled for com- pletion by Oct. 31, and the Friends want its priorities included in it. The first priority is that the Ajax Hos- pital be developed as the major hospital serving the area. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish introduced a motion asking council to support the five priorities. However, Whitby councillor Pat Perkins, who also serves as the chair- woman of the Health and Social Services committee, voiced her opposition. “We want our own hospital,” Council- lor Perkins said. “We are a community of over 100,000.” “We haven’t given up on a hospital in Whitby,” said Whitby Councillor Joe Drumm. “Things are happening behind the scenes that maybe not everyone is aware of.” He said he has spoken to a developer who is offering up land for a hospital. Oshawa Councillor Cathy Clarke sup- ported the endorsement, saying to have Ajax developed would be better than having hospital services offered out of Scarborough. The other priorities are that a regional birthing and newborn centre be located now at the Ajax hospital, that phase 2 of the Ajax hospital redevelop- ment plan begin now, population based funding and the integration of hospital and health services. Council endorsed the motion. Rob Mitchell/ News Advertiser photo Up the creek DURHAM — There’s still a hint of summer in the air and a lone fisherman was soak- ing up the last of the sun, trying his luck in Duffins Creek in Pickering Village last Thurs- day. PICKERING — A woman was bashed over the head by a man with a handgun during a home invasion robbery Monday night in Pickering. Durham police said the woman was talking on the phone when she heard an alarm go off in her Steeple Hill Drive home around 9:30 p.m. When she went to investigate she was confronted by two masked men, armed with a handgun and a screw- driver; the woman screamed and hung up the phone. One of the men hit the woman over the head with the gun and she fell to the floor, police said. The men began to ransack the house. Meanwhile, a man the woman had been talking to on the phone called police and a neighbour after she screamed and hung up. A neighbour went to check on the home and scared off the intruders. The woman did not sustain serious injury, police said. once,” Mr. Mitchell said. “We’ll do them sequentially.” If the Province decides to build new reactors, “we’ll continue to do the Pickering ‘B’ refurbishment. It may be different in timing,” Ms. Swami said, adding the cost to do the refurbishment hasn’t been set yet. Mr. Mitchell also talked about the 85/5 and Thrive program on the ‘B’ side. The goal of the initiative is to have 85-per cent capacity with five-per cent forced loss rate “by the end of 2007 and to sus- tain that.” It’s presently at an 80.5 per cent ca- pacity and a 2.5 per cent forced loss rate at the end of August, he noted. The capacity rate is a measure of how often the units are running at full power, while the forced loss rate is a measure of when the reactors are out of commis- sion because of an unplanned outage. Last year, the forced loss rate was 4.55 per cent. “We’re tracking to be around four per cent this year. Our focus on plant reliability is paying off,” Mr. Mitch- ell stated. The capacity target this year is 82 per cent. After planned outages, the units run well, he noted, including one that ran at full power for 200 consecutive days. “Staff have asked ‘are we focused on production or reliability?’ and I say ‘yes,’” Mr. Mitchell stated. “We’re encouraging people to identify concerns and they are.” * delivered to select homes LOOK FOR Canada’s Perfect Halloween Superstore trick or treat Flyer in Today’s Paper! 120 Centre St. S., Oshawa NIGHT SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMS MONDAY / WEDNESDAY OSHAWA AJAX Grade 11, Core English, College Grade 11, Core English, University Grade 11, Media Studies Grade 12, Core English, College Grade 12, Core English, University FULL Grade 11, Parenting, Open Grade 12, Individuals & Families in a Diverse Society, University/College Grade 12, Society, Challenge & Change, University/College Grade 12, Chemistry, College Grade 12, Chemistry, University Grade 12, Physics, College Grade 12, Physics, University Grade 11, Computer Art, Open Grade 11, Personal Fitness, Open R.S. New business breaks ground in Oshawa $40-million investment, 300 new jobs By Izabela Jaroszynski Staff Writer DURHAM — After more than a year in the works, Pival International broke ground on Fri- day to start construction at its new logistics facil- ity that will create 300 new jobs in Oshawa. The 600,000-square-foot facility, on 41 acres of land at the corner of Thornton Road and Wen- tworth Street, will provide logistics support to the General Motors assembly plant next door. “A little over a year ago, we started meeting with General Motors, working with them shoul- der to shoulder, to develop a facility that would allow them to optimize the flow of parts arriving from Ontario suppliers, other provinces, the U.S., Mexico, and around the world,” said Mario La Barbera, president of Pival. “We listened very carefully to what their re- quirements were and this facility will allow them to procure those parts, consolidate them and se- quence them just the way General Motors needs them to be.” The $40-million facility is to be built in two phases, with the first scheduled for completion in April 2007 and the second in 2008 to coincide with the opening of the new GM flex plant. Mr. La Barbera says phase one will consist of a 370,000 square-foot multi-modal warehouse space and already has an agreement in place to handle transmissions and tires for General Mo- tors. Although Pival will be the initial operator of the site, Mr. La Barbera hopes that with the opening of phase two, other partners will step forward to take advantage of the facility’s loca- tion next to GM and with links to rail and Hwy. 401. “We expect to generate about 500 truck loads per day through this centre that will be arriving by container, inter-modal, rail, truck,” he said. “I believe that we will generate more business and a lot of spin off activity.” On hand to welcome the new investment was Jim Flaherty, the federal minister of finance; Colin Carrie, MP for Oshawa; Jerry Ouelette, MPP for Oshawa; as well as Oshawa Mayor John Gray and a handful of Oshawa City councillors. “This is exciting news for our community,” Mayor Gray said. “Oshawa is growing by leaps and bounds, but we must never, ever lose sight that it’s not just about building homes in a community, you have to have employment as well. And that’s what this announcement is all about.” submitted photo Sax man Phil Bird performs at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 606 in Pickering recently. PAGE A6 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ SEPTEMBER 27, 2006P It would also help guard against foot- in-mouth syndrome O ccasionally I think it might be pleasant to have some kind of “a n ti-virus” software for my life. Just a filter of sorts that I could activate from time to time to remove the unwant- ed, irritating and potentially harmful elements I come into contact with. Something I could run once a week or even monthly to scan my life for twits, dopes and fools and be given the option of “Sav- ing,” “Deleting” or “Quaran- tining” such individuals. I might even be given the op- tion of creating a “recovery” disk in case I wanted to give some idiot a second chance. Life would be nice if it were that simple. A really good anti-virus pro- gram would have to be pro- active as well, able to pick up potential problems before they became major irritants. “The person you are about to date is an unknown program. Inviting him/her into your life may put your system at risk. Life-Virus recommends you back up all bank accounts and financial files before pro- ceeding.” I know more than a few people who would’ve paid Bill Gates a small ransom for that kind of advice. Some software these days actually “learns” about you and your habits, good or bad, as you use it. You can actu- ally teach it how to react to certain stimuli or data. Some- thing like that might be handy in life. “Neil, according to my re- cords you will throw up if you have another margarita. If you wish to keep drinking click ‘Ignore’ otherwise you will pass out in 30 seconds.” “Your foot is dangerously close to your mouth. Life- Virus recommends shutting down all external ports im- mediately and recharging your brain.” “Warning – the guy in the plaid jacket and white shoes chatting up your wife consti- tutes a High Risk for the home user. He is a worm and quite possibly has a Trojan on him. Press ‘Esc’ to spill his drink and make a hasty exit.” Good solid advice. Finally I think a nice feature would be the ability to set a “restore point” for my life. Using this function I could take a moment from my past where the world seemed like it could not possibly get any better; my wedding day, the birth of my children, finding my first discarded adult mag- azine and setting that mo- ment as the time I could re- turn to, and begin again from, whenever things got a little out of hand in the present. Nice. Of course, Anti-virus soft- ware for my life would have to be just that. For my life, and no one else’s. Strictly propri- etary. I mean who’s kidding who? If everybody had this stuff I’d be wiped off of life’s hard drive inside of 24 hours. This column alone would have thousands smashing my DELETE key every week. That’s the rub isn’t it? The great irony. The fabulous va- riety of the human species, that makes us so incredibly fascinating and wonderful, is also what makes us infinitely irritating. It takes all kinds, as they say. One man’s jerk is another man’s pal...or at least, jerky friend. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. To the editor: Canadian soldiers again fallen and wounded in Af- ghanistan. People have even left count- ing these recurring events. In the past it has been Ca- n adian soldiers, Bulgarian soldiers, British soldiers, an Italian journalist and so many civilians. Some travelling in their private cars with fami- lies, in Baghdad and other parts of the world, killed by the so-called “friendly fire” by Americans. The soldiers get panicky and shoot, from ground or air. My question is, why are they mostly American bul- lets? Why not the soldiers of other countries repeatedly making such a “friendly” mis- take? And, if they do, would Americans still consider it friendly fire? For example, an Afghani soldier belonging to the (Af- ghanistan President Hamid) Karzai regime, shooting an American counterpart. Now King George (Bush’s) saying should be, “Whether you are with us or with the enemies, we will kill you.” Va qar Raees Pickering Respect Greenbelt and Places to Grow laws To the editor: Thirty years ago, when the Pickering airport lands were frozen, Durham Region was inadvertently given a great gift; we now have the larg- est block of undeveloped land in the GTA. There are viable high-grade farms, woodlands, cold-water streams and other near-to-urban rural trea- sures. It would be utterly irre- sponsible for Durham politi- cians to approve any plan that would erode this treasure. It is irreplaceable. Nobody can re-build farm- land after it has been scraped away and paved. Nobody can eat pavement. Nobody can fish in a parking lot. Subdivi- sions and strip malls contrib- ute to the ongoing disaster of climate change; trees, if left to grow, will help mitigate cli- mate change. Please -- respect the Green- belt and Places to Grow laws. Do not give your approval to plans for the expansion of the urban envelope, even if the plans are hidden in appendi- ces. Bernadette Zubrisky Ecologist and Environmen- tal Educator, Sierra Club of Canada, Ontario Chapter Agincourt Darlington ideal for new nukes I n keeping with Durham Region’s place as Ontario’s energy centre, it’s only appropriate that Ontario Power Generation has taken the first formal steps to getting new reactors con- structed at its Darlington Nuclear Generation site. The push for new nuclear build has been on the table for some time now and was part of a report to the minister of energy recently. That report looked at the needs of Ontario into the future, and while it suggested that alternative sources of power had to be part of the plan, the refurbishment of nuclear facilities and a few new reactors are a central part of the mix. It’s well-known that new reliable sources of energy are imper- ative for Ontario to meet increased demands as a result of popu- lation and economic growth. Over the past few years, especially with the heat waves we’ve had throughout our summers, we’ve pushed our supply to the limit. It’s only logical to assume that, as we continue to grow, we’ll need to generate more power. Given the lengthy timelines between making a licence appli- cation and eventually flicking the nuclear power switch, there is simply no time to waste. You’re talking, at bare minimum, at least a decade before we have new power sources, not a minute too soon. That’s why OPG’s licence application is such welcome news. Mayor John Mutton has called it, “probably the biggest day in Clarington that I can remember.” Mayor Mutton has long pushed his municipality as the best place to build new nuclear. That lobbying has found a welcome ear in OPG president Jim Hankinson who tips his hat to Durham Region and Clarington as very supportive host communities. Combine that with political will to make something happen and a long-term supply of skilled workers in the nuclear industry in Durham and the local site is nothing but a winner. What happens now? The federal approvals process, under the direction of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CSNC), must follow a list of steps which includes an environmental as- sessment. No doubt there will be much work done, including public hearings, to make sure all parties are heard along the way. But given the success of the Darlington site, it’s easy to see that the best course of action is to add to an already excellent site. Durham will benefit through an explosion in new jobs in the construction industry and high-paid employees to run the reactor. Let the approvals process begin. City of Pickering 2006 Accessibility Plan PA GE A7 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ September 27, 2006 P Mountain bike event helps open door to insulin pump technology By David Blumenfeld Staff Writer DURHAM — Te ams of mountain bik- ers raised public awareness plus $10,000 for patients with Type 1 diabetes trying to access insulin pump therapy. The participants, including a number from Durham Region, competed in a grueling 24-hour relay in Bolton’s Albi- on Hills to boost funds for insulin pump technology for patients of the Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre in Whitby. The event was so successful the centre plans on making it an annual event to con- tinue support for the Centre’s new Get Pumped program. “We are thrilled to have raised $10,000 on our initial endeavour, but we also gained first-hand experience about the effects and adjustments required to compete at this level of endurance,” said Marlene Grass, executive director and founder of the Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre. “The knowledge gained will en- hance participation in future events.” Sponsored by Motorcity Saturn of Whitby and local Rotarian clubs, the teams aimed to raise both funds and awareness with four insulin pump users participating in the bike challenge. Event co-ordinator Pepe Bakshi, a pump user himself, was able to secure financial support from two major insulin pump suppliers -- Medtronic and Cozmore - - to provide pumps to the Best Centre at a 50 per cent discount. The average cost of an insulin pump is $7,000. “It was brilliant,” Mr. Bakshi said of the event. “We raised about $10,000 and that’s going to mean five families in Durham are going to have access to an insulin pump that they normally couldn’t, so we’re just thrilled about that.” Ray Richardson, a participant of Mo- torcity Saturn, said the event brought together “a core of riders... really excited about mountain biking and dedicated to the cause.” The board of directors and patients at the Best Centre also expressed gratitude to all the partici- pants, local businesses and Rotarians that donated food, supplies and finan- cial support toward making the event so successful. The Charles H. Best Diabetes Cen- tre, 900 Victoria St. W. in Whitby, has been providing support and education to children, adolescents and adults with Type 1 Diabetes and their families since 1989. On Sunday, the chairman of the 2006 fundraising campaign for the United Way of Ajax-Pickering and Uxbridge, announced the target this year is $1.9 million. Last year, the target was $1.6 million. The target is “a lot of money, but we’re going to get there. We’ll get there because it’s a community that cares. With you, we will get there,” Mr. Terry told a crowd of about 300 at the kick-off at the Pickering Recreation Complex. “We’ve set a pretty ambitious goal this year,” Mr. Terry stated. “We’re very fortunate we live in a strong commu- nity.” This is the United Way’s 36 annu- al campaign, and over the years the agency has raised more than $26 mil- lion, said Edna Klazek, the United Way’s executive director. In an interview, Mr. Terry said of the goal, “It’s a total we believe that’s achievable. More important, it’s what’s needed to provide the services re- quired in this community.” The United Way funds 30 agencies and 60 programs, he noted, adding about one in three people turns to the United Way for assistance. Among the initiatives are Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Girls Incorporated, a backpack pro- gram, the VON, CNIB and Community Care. “The capacity, we’ve looked hard at the organizations and individuals who supported us,” Mr. Terry stated. “It’s an opportunity to partner with new com- panies. The capacity for caring and giving is what we’re’ counting on.” Mayors Steve Parish of Ajax and Dave Ryan of Pickering both spoke about the important role the United Way plays in their communities. “As communities grow, the social infrastructure is so important,” Mayor Parish said. “The United Way and the agencies it funds accommodate part of that social infrastructure.” The kick-off was called Bon Appétit, which featured food samplings from dozens of local restaurants and cater- ing services. “An event like this takes the help and support from many people,” Ms. Klazek said. We’re a small staff of six. We’re not able to do this without the help of many people.” Yvette Nechvatal-Drew, the execu- tive director of Girls Incorporated, said United Way funding is “essen- tial, because they fund two mentoring programs, one for girls six to 16 and one for teen moms. Sixty per cent of our operating budget comes from the United Way.” The money helps the agency “pro- vide programing for at-risk youths,” she added. The program has 65 matches and 14 teen mothers. There are about 30 girls on a waiting list, while 35 are in the process of coming onto the waiting list. One area the United Way is focusing on is having people who work outside of the region have their donations sent back to the local agency, Mr. Terry said. Upcoming events include Give on the GO and local hair salons donating a portion of their proceeds from one day to the United Way. Staging events is done “as much to raise awareness as money,” Mr. Terry said. A.J. For their contributions to a health- ier environment, Ajax’s Lakeside PS, Pickering’s Rosebank Road PS, and Whitby’s C.E. Broughton PS received Ontario EcoSchool certification plaques during the Durham District School Board’s Sept. 18 meeting. “I am thrilled tonight to be able to present the EcoSchool certification to three schools in Durham Region,” said Judy Gould, waste and energy officer for the Durham District School Board. Each of the schools created a school eco-team to improve its efforts in waste reduction, energy conserva- tion, ecological literacy and school ground greening. Through the proj- ect, students and staff participated in school-wide efforts such as waste free and boomerang lunches, outdoor classroom development and habitat gardens. Of the schools, Rosebank re- ceived a bronze certification, while C.E. Broughton and Lakeside received silver. “(Lakeside PS) is actually incredible; it has had an active green group for 16 years” said Ms. Gould. The school also has a natural habitat in its front. At C.E. Broughton, a recycling pro- gram started by a custodian there has received an excellent response, said Ms. Gould. “To the point where students actu- ally fight to be on his recycling team,” she added. The school also encourag- es waste free and boomerang lunches, in which students bring home their waste. The school board encourages all of its schools to follow waste reduction and conservation guidelines. Current- ly, several others are working to get the EcoSchool certification as well. The Ontario program provides cur- riculum-based resources for schools to assist them in more sustainable liv- ing. It promotes a reduction in green- house gas emissions and aligning class based learning with school operations to help find innovative ways to save money and lessen impact on the en- vironment. It also provides related opportunities for learning and action outside the classroom. DAVIDSON CHRYSLER PRESENTS *All lease payments are plus PST & GST. Winder to Attack new coaching gig Former Panthers head coach moves to Ajax, replaces Durant, who stepped down for personal reasons By Al Rivett Sports Editor AJAX — A week after being ousted as head coach of the Pickering Panthers, John Winder has landed on his feet with another junior ‘A’ hockey club -- none other than the rival Ajax Attack. Ajax Attack general manager John Tugnutt confirmed the hiring of Winder on Monday, just 24 hours after saying Winder was on the short list of potential candidates for the head coaching posi- tion. Winder was on hand at the Attack’s game against the Bancroft Hawks at the Governors’ Showcase in Bowmanville, standing alongside Attack owner Robert Stein in the stands. Winder takes over from former sec- ond-year head coach Carey Durant, who stepped down from the OHA On- tario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League team last week. During that week, Steve Horner served as the interim head coach. Tu gnutt says Pickering’s loss is defi- nitely Ajax’s gain. “He’s had many years as a coach and GM, he knows the league, knows the players and knows a lot of the kids on our team. He’s a teacher and a great coach. He was our first choice. We think Pickering made a mistake in letting him go.” Winder was to meet with play- ers at practice at the Ajax Com- munity Centre on Tuesday night. He’ll make his Attack coaching debut, ironically enough, against the Pickering Panthers at the Pickering Recre- ation Complex on Friday at 7:30 p.m. “It’s strange how hockey works,” says Winder. “Here I was two weeks ago coaching the Panthers with Ajax coming in and looking forward to beating them. Now, two weeks later, I’m in Ajax look- ing to beat Pickering.” Oddly enough, it was Pickering Pan- thers’ co-owner Randy Hebscher who relayed to Winder the vacancy that ex- isted in Ajax. A meeting with Stein fol- lowed and, after meeting with Tugnutt, he was offered the job and readily ac- cepted. “I’m kind of excited. I watched them play on Saturday and Sunday (in Bow- manville) and I really liked what I saw,” says Winder. “It’s a very good team with a lot of potential. Full marks to Carey (Durant) and his staff for recruiting some very good players.” Tu gnutt says former head coach Du- rant resigned from the Attack for per- sonal reasons. “It was a personal issue and he needed time to address it,” says Tugnutt. “He thought it was best to step back and get things in order.” Durant, reached Mon- day, confirmed personal issues prompted him to step away from coach- ing. “I decided it was time to pack it in and retire. A lot of things have happened in my life over the past two months and I was tired of the ins and outs of the ju- nior hockey scene,” says Durant, adding he wants to spend more time with his eight-year-old son. He admits the death of his mother, Mary Lou Durant, at age 62 a month ago hit him hard. Moreover, he says the vagaries of coaching tier II junior hockey came home to roost with the dismissal of Winder, the four-year Pickering Pan- thers’ head coach, last week. “A guy like John Winder can do a good job (in Pickering) and be (thrown) right out the window. There’s no respect; no respect at all,” says Durant. Durant states he has “no hard feel- ings” toward team owner Robert Stein or Tugnutt, noting he still believes the Attack, as currently constituted, will be vastly improved over the five-win squad of a year ago. Tu gnutt says it was with regret that Durant chose to leave the team. “I’m disappointed. I’ve known Carey for a lot of years. He’s a great coach and we’re going to miss him.” Assistant coach Brent Chandler has also left the Attack, ostensibly to play with the Whitby Dunlops senior hockey team. Last week, the Attack put together a 2-1 record with Horner at the helm, win- ning their first game after five losses, 6-5 in Newmarket last Thursday. After losing to Markham 6-3 at home on Saturday, the Ajax junior squad recorded their second win at the annual Governor’s Showcase in Bowmanville on Sunday, defeating the Bancroft Hawks, 5-4. Tu gnutt says Horner will remain on Winder’s coaching staff for the remain- der of the current campaign. “Steve has worked with John before and Steve is comfortable working with John again. That was important to me and Rob (Stein). We’re very happy with Steve. He’s contributed a lot to the team and that will continue. It’s up to John to bring in a third (assistant) coach, if he thinks he needs it.” John Winder Carey Durant Panthers deliver up-and-down play on weekend Pickering juniors finish busy weekend on upswing; welcome old coach back Friday in game with Attack B y Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — Yo u could say new Pickering Panthers head coach Pat Cur- cio has been on a wild roller coaster ride in the short time he’s been behind the bench. Playing a busy three-games-in-three- days schedule last weekend, the Pan- thers have, during that span, shown their new head coach some Jekyl-and-Hyde tendencies. In Curcio’s head coaching debut a week ago Sunday against the St. Mi- chael’s Buzzers, the Panthers responded with a weak effort that culminated in an 11-3 pasting. Fast forward to last Sun- day morning at the annual Gov- ernor’s Showcase in Bowmanville. There, the Pan- thers pounced quickly and often on the hapless Bramalea Blues, posting a 13-1 laugher in front of the assembled scouts from the Ontario Hockey League, National Hockey League and NCAA pro- grams in the U.S. And, after shooting the lights out in a 6- 1 pasting of Os- hawa’s Durham Fury in Pickering last Friday, aveng- ing a 4-3 loss to the Fury in the season opener, the Panthers’ offence fell silent in a 3-0 loss to the Vaughan Vipers in Vaughan on Saturday night, being shut out for the first time this season. With the team being in sync and then, just as quickly, falling out of sync, over the past week, Curcio believes it’s just a matter of getting in some good practice time. Toward that goal, the Panthers will have three practices this week in order to get it all together in order for Friday’s first meeting with the neighbouring Ajax Attack at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex at 7;30 p.m. “I think things are progressing, but (setbacks) are something to be expected. We’ve only had one practice since I took over. We have three practices in a row this week, so I hope to get the boys work- ing in sync,” says Curcio. As for this Friday’s contest, the At- tack and Panthers matches are generally something both neighbouring teams get up for. This time, there’s a new wrinkle thrown into the long-standing rivalry. Ajax will come to town with new head coach John Winder behind the bench for the first time. Winder was hired by the Attack Monday, a week after he was let go by the Panthers after three years with the club. Winder notes it will be a little odd to come back to Pickering as the Attack head coach. “It’s strange how hockey works,” he says. As for Sunday’s rare laugher against Bramalea, Curcio says it allowed him to play many of the rookies in different situ- ations, while cutting back the ice time of some of the veterans. “A lot of the guys don’t get a lot of ice time but, in this one, they got a lot of ice time, so that was positive,” says Curcio. One of the players who benefited was rookie defenceman Matt Rigtrup, who saw some time quarterbacking the Pan- thers’ power play. “I was on the power play in prep school (in New York state), so I’ve had to find my bearings,” says Rigtrup, a native of Montclair, New Jersey, after the game. “Having some power play time really got my confidence up. I made some good passes and felt really comfortable out there.” The game was essentially over after the Panthers netted four goals in the first period and led 5-1 at the second intermission. The goals kept on coming in the final frame, with Pickering beat- ing beleaguered Bramalea goaltender Jeremy Posner eight times. Moreover, Sunday’s game was a tour de force for second-year defenceman Zack Fenwick. He netted a hat trick -- the first of his junior career -- while also add- ing an assist for a four-point outing. The peewees scorched Scarborough 30-0, while the atoms pulled off an impressive 32-0 victory. Meanwhile, the Dolphins tykes and Scarborough entered Sunday’s game with identical 5-0 records. It was the Thunder, how- ever, that remained undefeated after handing the Dolphins a 40- 0 defeat. All Dolphins teams meet an- other league foe, the Burlington Stampeders, at Pickering’s Kins- men Park on Sunday. The tyke game goes at 9:30 a.m., followed by the atoms at 11:30 a.m. and the peewees at 1:30 p.m. In last Sunday’s atom con- test, the Dolphins’ defence was the star of the show, completely shutting down a fast and agile Thunder squad. Sunday’s game represented the fifth shutout for the Dolphins’ defence, which has allowed only six points against thus far this season. Meanwhile, the offence put up eight points in the first quarter, and increased the margin to 24-0 at half time. The offensive con- tinued to fire on all cylinders in the second half. The Dolphins’ offence took the field and immediately ran a 30-yard reverse by slotback Denver Wright. That led to run- ning back Shaq Lawrence’s first touchdown of two in the contest. He ended a big day with 77 yards rushing, which brings his total to 566 rushing yards and 11 touch- downs so far this season. Wright had a touchdown and 62 yards for the day. Wright has rushed for 346 yards this year and has six touchdowns to his credit. Full- back Keldyn Ahlstedt ran for 62 yards on Sunday and, although he did not score a touchdown, his blocking was a big part of the offensive success. Ahlstedt has rushed for 148 yards and has six touchdowns this year. Quarterback Michael Stobbart had one of his best games, rush- ing for 63 yards and passing for 25 yards and scoring a touch- down in the fourth quarter. Stob- bart has 246 yards rushing this season with two touchdowns and 153 passing yards. Offensive and defensive tackle Justin Smith pushed bodies up and down the field all game from both sides of the ball. Ahlstedt, at linebacker, and Lawrence, at corner back, also led the team on defence with six tackles apiece and 23 tackles each for the sea- son. The point-after team of kicker Luke Taylor Eskins, holder Ahl- stedt and long snapper Jackson Harding was a perfect 4-for-4 on a windy day, contributing eight points. Offensive and defensive stars of the game were Lawrence, Ahlstedt, Stobbart and Wright. Meanwhile, in Sunday’s pee- wee contest, the Dolphins came out strong and kept on going for the full 48 minutes of play. The Dolphins’ offence es- tablished their running game, proving their ability to kill time on the clock. Each of their four touchdowns was gained through the run, two by Dillon Campbell, one each by Kurlan Cadet and Connor Paterson. The defence proved too strong for the Thunder offence. Dustin Kaupp caught two interceptions and almost a third, his first being a return for more than 40 yards. Greg Farrell followed with an- other interception and run. Not to be left out, Dexter Damboise scooped up a fumble and ran it back for major yardage. Unfortunately for the Dol- phins’ tykes, the first play of the game set the tone for the contest. The Dolphins couldn’t recover the kick-off from the Thunder, which was recovered the Scar- borough squad. The turnover led to a Thunder touchdown and the Dolphins were never able to recover. Middle linebacker Mathew Williams covered the field and made most of the defence’s tack- les in the game. Pickering sailor 11th at world championships PICKERING — A Pickering Olympic sailor finished just out of the top 10 in the laser class at the World Championship Re- gatta at Jeju, South Korea from Sept. 10 to 20. Bernard Luttmer, who rep- resented Canada at the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Athens, placed 11th in the World Championship Regatta, a Grade 1 event, which is the highest ranking next to the Olympics. More than 128 pre-qualified competitors from across the globe took part in seven races over six days. Luttmer’s results over the series consisted of a ninth-, seventh-, 21st-, eighth-, sixth-, fifth- and 42nd-place finishes for points totaling 56, as each competitor only counts his top six scores. Lutt- mer’s scores were consis- tent con- sidering the range of sail- ing con- ditions. The 42nd in the last race was sailed following a typhoon. This six-day event brought conditions ranging from very light winds to ty- phoon conditions. “The athletes who did well at this regatta demonstrated their versatility. Bernard man- aged the conditions well,” says national team coach Tommy Wharton. “I’m happy with my 11th place. Although, placing 42nd in the last race was a huge dis- appointment. I was hoping to discard my 21st-place finish. And my poor performance in the last race made this impos- sible. But, an 11th-place finish is a good finish for me,” says Luttmer. A top-16 finish at the World Championships guarantees the athletes support from Sport Canada for two years. Sport Canada funding, a monthly sti- pend designated to cover the athletes’ living expenses, is ex- tremely important to the athlete for not only financial reasons but also for National Team sta- tus. But, this in no way covers the cost involved in an Olym- pic campaign, as the burden is on the athlete to come up with their own additional support. Following this, Luttmer heads back home to Canada for some rest before he goes west to par- ticipate in the upcoming Cana- dian National Championships in Vancouver on English Bay. Bernard Luttmer McDonald’s encourages ac tive schools in Durham DURHAM — Across Dur- ham, kids can sprint and jump their way to new gym equip- ment for their schools. McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada Limited, with support from the Canadian Olympic Committee, has announced that registration for the 2006- 07 Go Active! Fitness Chal- lenge is now open. The Go Active! Fitness Chal- lenge is an annual program that provides Canadian ele- mentary schools the oppor- tunity to earn $200 in phys-ed credits per participating class, up to a maximum of $500 per school. Te achers can visit www.fit- nesschallenge.ca before Oct. 27 to register. This is the third year the challenge is open to schools in Ontario. Last year, Ontario schools that participated saw an over- all 13 per cent improvement in scores during the course of the challenge. Participating teachers test students on a series of six ex- ercises: sit-ups, push-ups, 50- metre dash, shuttle run, stand- ing long jump and an endur- ance run -- once in the fall and again in the spring, aiming for individual improvement. Eligible classes that com- plete the challenge and submit their results will earn $200 in Wintergreen Phys-ed credits per participating class, up to a maximum of $500 per school.FOLLOW ALL OUR BLOGGERS:Visit durhamregion.typepad.comFOLLOW ALL OUR BLOGGERS:Visit durhamregion.typepad.comFOLLOW ALL OUR BLOGGERS:Visit durhamregion.typepad.comNEWS ADVERTISER PA R TNERS WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES TO BRING YOU AMAZING DEALS ON SALE NOW Ski Lakeridge is close by and offers great day and night skiing and snowboarding. Remember the Titans. That’s the type of soccer season the Ajax Titans 1990 girls’ under-16 rep soccer team has enjoyed – un- defeated in league play to claim first place, and now Cup champions. Over the summer season, the Ti- tans finished with 18 wins and a tie, outscoring their opponents an incredible 90-8, and goalkeeper Ken- dra Bianchi recorded 13 shutouts. They achieved all the goals they set for themselves as a result. The Cup final game was a clas- sic overtime nail-biter. Peterborough played a gritty game, with its goal- keeper making many game-saving stops before Jen Joucas played a pass wide to Sarah Taylor who streaked down the left side and placed a lovely shot over the goalkeeper and just in- side the far post to give Ajax the 2-1 victory. Ajax carried the play all game and had a goal called back before Ari- ana Santos gave Ajax the lead during regular time, picking up a loose ball in the box after Taylor had played a cross pass into the zone. Peterbor- ough tied the game with less than a minute to play, converting a rebound off a free kick. Jen Kirby, usually a stalwart Ajax midfielder, stepped in and played well in net for the Titans after Bianchi was injured in the semi- final game the day before. In the Cup semifinal between Ajax and Oshawa, the game was decided in the first minute of play. Ajax gained a corner kick quickly and Alexa Mc- Cartney sent a perfect ball into the box. Jessica Leroux headed the ball to the low corner but it hit a defender before Justine Forth blasted the ball into the back of the net. Riley Adams added the insurance marker in the 2-0 victory, taking advantage of the goalkeeper’s miscue after Shayna Henry had played a cross pass to- wards the net. In the Titans’ 4-1 quarter-final win over Etobicoke, Santos, Taylor, McCartney and Forth were the goal scorers. This fall, the Ajax Titans will travel to Delaware for a showcase tourna- ment against top-ranked U.S. and other Canadian teams. Other team members are Jassica Kollar, Jenna Read, Monica Belcas- tro, Gloria Flores, Cassandra Gogos, Jodie McDonald, Julia Rivers and Jennifer Powless. Brittany Slattery was a critical call-up as goalkeeper in the early season when Bianchi was injured. Team staff includes coaches Alex Bianchi and Gary Kirby, man- ager Dave Slattery and trainer Valerie Rivers. The team will conduct an open try-out for girls born in 1990 on Sun- day, Oct. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mon- arch field in Ajax. For further details contact coach Alex Bianchi at 905- 427-7106 or visit the team website at http://eteamz.active.com/ajaxti- tans/. The guest artist is Russian native Alexander Markovich, who will per- form Tchaikovsky’s ‘Piano Concerto 1 Opus 23 in B Flat Minor’ at the Sept. 30 concert at Calvary Baptist Church. This is the Israeli pianist’s fourth visit to Oshawa, where, as in other cen- tres, he’s left audiences amazed at his exuberance, verve and strength. Also on the program is the sym- phony performing Tchaikovsky’s ‘Symphony No. 4 (Symphony of Destiny)’ under the direction of music director and conductor Marco Parisot- to. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. con- cert are $40, an increase over last year due to rising produc- tion costs, said outgoing chairman Sherry Bassin. “Like all orchestras, the ticket price reflects only about one third of the cost of production,” he said. “Do the math: you gather 60 to 70 profession- al musicians together on stage for one evening concert. Throw in four rehearsals, Add and internationally acclaimed guest artist. The result is a ticket you would pay double or triple for in Toronto, London or New York.” ODSO has also had problems with venues in the last year as the orches- tra and its audience grow. This year, however, the orchestra returns to Calvary Baptist Church, Rossland and Ritson roads, for five of its seven concerts. The Dec. 17 concert, featuring Handel’s Messiah, is at the Commu- nity Pentacostal Church on Taunton Road West. A joint venture with Kingston Sym- phony will be held at the Toronto Centre for the Arts and at the Grand Theatre in Kingston in March. Tickets for the Sept. 30 concert are available by calling 905-579- 6711, possible at the door the night of the performance, and at Durham College Book store, Wilson and Lee Music, Simcoe Street North, United Way Information Services kiosk, Os- hawa Centre, all in Oshawa, Lafon- taine and Whitby School of Music in Whitby, Connie’s Brooklin Village Shoppe in Brooklin, Durham School of Music in Ajax, James Publishing in Bowmanville and Wee Tartan Shop in Port Perry. The next concert is a night of Ital- ian opera highlights featuring sopra- no Marie-Josee Lord and baritone- bass Guillermo Ruiz, on Oct. 28. And it’s not just due to the fact Gilbank is a weaver, a fab- ric artist and works daily with fabrics and thread. “The common theme ... is the thread that ties it together,” whether it’s a wall hanging or a piece of wearable art. Everything she produc- es, tapestries, coats, capes, scarves, is made from fabric and held with thread, she said. But there’s more to her exhibit, Common Threads, which opened Sept. 23 at the gallery in the Scugog Memo- rial Public Library. Everyone around the world uses fabrics. They are “com- mon threads for mankind in that they are found worldwide and are largely conceived by necessity and function,” she said. The global aspect of fabric can be found in the exhibit, which is heavily influenced by her many travels, includ- ing trips to Africa and a year’s residence in Caracas, Venezu- ela with her husband, whom she met on a blind date in Mexico. Whether it’s the earth tones and patterns from Africa or the bright colours of South America, you’ll find them in her work. “You can draw lots of in- spirations from cultures,” she said. Gilbank, who runs a bed and breakfast in Jackson’s Point, said she enjoys taking every day items, such as thread, bits of scrap materials, second- hand store clothing, and ma- nipulating them, turning them into something different. This transformation fascinates her. “I always liked the visual, the tactile aspect of it. To be able to take something and make it into something else.” She’s worked with fabric since she took home econom- ics in school. She continued but things “started going side- ways about 22 years ago” and her art emerged, she said. She particularly remembers seeing a turquoise fabric that reminded her of the colour of the Caribbean, buying it and making a “window” scene out of it. She continued her art while working as a nurse, first in re- mote communities in north- ern Manitoba and then in in- tensive care units in Toronto hospitals. “I did some stitching when I was (in Manitoba), mostly kids and dogs,” she said. To day, she enjoys going to multimedia galleries and shows. “I can get ideas from paint- ings or sculptures or jewelry,” she said. In the exhibit, viewers will find wall hangings with land- scapes and seascapes, wear- able art, custom works she’s done of people’s houses, a wall art series of fairies and pho- tos of custom art, including a work she did of Jim Carrey’s cottage at the request of his sister-in-law.
