Close to 200 residents came to a statutory public meeting June 1 at the Pickering Civic Com- plex that dealt with the rezoning application for the Bay Ridges Plaza, located on Bayly Street at Liverpool Road. Carmen Montgomery was one of 20 residents who spoke at the meeting. She discussed the im- portant role the local pharmacy plays in her life. She has rheuma- toid arthritis and said the phar- macy works with her doctor to make sure the medication she needs is there on time. “A bsolutely nothing has been said about what is going to hap- pen to the businesses that are there,” she said. “You can’t tell me they’re not a viable business. The pharmacy has been there for more than 20 years.” Ms. Montgomery said it is not just herself that will be affected, but also the many seniors who live in the Bayshore Towers be- hind the plaza and also at the nearby St. Martin’s seniors resi- dence. “I want your assurance that my health care is not going to be compromised by your develop- ment,” she said. That’s when the region will host the 2008 Special Olym- pics Spring Games, a four-day event that will see approxi- mately 700 athletes compete in a variety of events. The Durham College campus in Oshawa will host many of the events for intellectually disabled athletes, members of Durham Region council heard during a presentation by Durham Regional Po- lice Chief Vernon White on We dnesday. The police service, a long- time supporter of the Special Olympics, spearheaded the effort to attract the games to Durham. The region is pre- paring to host athletes and their families, as well as more than 170 coaches taking part in the event. It is estimated 600 volunteers will be called upon to stage the games. Garth Johns, Durham’s commissioner of human re- sources, said as the Region and transit employees ne- gotiate their first collective agreement, he is hopeful the same won’t happen here. Durham Region Transit (DRT) and CAW Local 222 began contract negotiations last week. “We work hard in main- taining good labour relations with all of our unions,” Mr. Johns said. “We hope CAW will be no different.” This is the first contract for Durham Region Transit, which was formed in January of this year when area mu- nicipal systems amalgam- ated. Mr. Johns said he is always optimistic negotiations will conclude without any dis- ruption in service. “Clearly we are trying to have a meeting of the minds and come up with a collec- tive agreement both the CAW and we can live with,” Mr. Johns said. “Each party has entered into the process with what they see as an ideal col- lective agreement.” Mr. Johns said the two sides are at opposite ends of the spectrum and the negoti- ations are meant to bring the parties to a middle ground. Ta lks could continue into June, Mr. Johns said, calling negotiations a unique situa- tion. “It is not your typical re- newal,” he said. “It is brand new and there is a lot of back- ground work to be done.” The CAW represents al- most 300 employees, includ- ing operators, mechanics, service persons, and office administration staff. CAW representatives were not available for comment. After a summer spent chasing butterfl ies, swimming, working or just plain lazing about, Labour Day rolls around and hundreds of thousands of students fi le back into their schools - ready for a new year. Or are they? A teacher friend of mine tells me that, “We have to allow at least a month for everyone to get settled and back in a learning mood.” That puts us into October and, according to other teachers, many students are still not refocused and ready to learn by then. However, according to the same source, “by mid October most kids are back to speed.” According to my calculations, this would mean that from July 1, through at least October 15, many students are not focused or at their best. “For at least three and one half months, learning can be haphazard to say the least.” says Robert Primrose a Grade 10 teacher. In fact, it may even be worse than that. Think about your child’s learning experiences in June each year. Tests, exams, fi eld trips and other events consume most of that month’s schedule adding another month to the let down period. Considering that the average school year includes only 200 days of instruction and that many of those days are spent in less than ideal conditions, we soon see why many schools struggle to meet the educational expectations of parents and society. What can we do to help? Easy. Help your kids stay sharp over the summer holiday and there will be no let down - no big gap in the fall. Kids who are focused and ready in September, will learn, integrate and understand new material right away. This will allow them to make the most of each school day instead of only half of them. There are many ways to help kids remain on top of their school skills. Make sure that your children read during the summer. Even if they have a busy social life and a part or full time job, make sure that they take time each day to read. Set up brief study periods at least every other day. Times when your child can review the worst or hardest subjects, read ahead into next year’s material and organize for next year. However, possibly the best way to help students stay sharp is through Supplemental Staying Sharp All Summer By R.N. Whitehead Ph.D. Education programs. Good summer programs, such as those at Oxford Learning Centres, keep those thinking, reading, writing, math and study skills sharp and ready for September. “It’s not so much the memorized material that students forget over the summer,” says Dr. Pete Gamlin from U of T’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. “It’s learning How to Learn that gets forgotten each summer. That’s because it is seldom taught independent of school subjects. Students who develop good learning and thinking skills will be ready for success in September. Attending a study session over the summer at Oxford Learning is the best way I know of overcoming the summer let-down.” Oxford Learning is Canada’s leading provider of supplemental and enrichment education services. They will design as individualized learning program for each child to keep them sharp over the summer and get a head start on next year. Help your child enjoy learning this summer and return to school in September with improved skills and greater confi dence. Stephen Fagyas, representing the applicant, made an exten- sive presentation, but was inter- rupted by the passionate crowd on several occasions. He said the development goes along with the Province’s Places to Grow legisla- tion that designates Pickering as an urban growth centre, noting the development is a five-minute walk from the Pickering GO sta- tion and adjacent to Pickering’s downtown. He said the proposal would revitalize the commercial area, which is languishing because of businesses that have closed. Both Mr. Fagyas and the developers refused an interview following the meeting. Residents had concerns with the size and height of the propos- al, the environmental impact, the parking and traffic issues they believe it will create, and the way tenants are being treated. ‘All we’re looking for is fair and equitable compensation.’ PASQUALE MALANDRINO Pasquale Malandrino spoke on behalf of some of the remaining tenants of the plaza, where he owns a hair salon. He said he and other tenants would not be against the rede- velopment, if the community de- cides it wants it. “If the community sees it as an improvement to the present plaza and the services it provides them, that’s good enough for us,” he said. The tenants just want to make sure demoli- tion doesn’t begin while business- es are still open, he said, and that there are fair ne- gotiations to settle exist- ing leases. His doesn’t expire until October 2009. “All we’re looking for is fair and equitable compensation,” Mr. Malandrino said. Tim Dobson, a member of the Pickering East Shore Community Association (PESCA) executive, spoke about PESCA’s concerns and its position. Mr. Dobson is chairman of the committee orga- nized to deal with the redevelop- ment. “PESCA is opposed to the de- veloper’s current proposal, how- ever in the fairness of modera- tion, PESCA is not opposed to the redevelopment of the Bay Ridges Plaza in general,” he said. PESCA shares the concerns of the community about parking and traffic, the environment, the height -- they believe the build- ings should be capped at a maxi- mum of seven storeys -- and the commercial facilities. “PESCA lacks the confidence that the developer will provide the retail space that will be lost,” Mr. Dobson said. The issue now goes to Pickering planning staff who will prepare a report for council at either its summer meeting in July or for one in September. ✦ Businesses from page 1 Tim Dobson Businesses will let residents be their guide PICKERING — Come on over for a visit. That’s the invitation the Altona Forest Public School community is extending to Pickering resi- dents, as it hosts its first commu- nity fun fair. The event is designed to not only provide the school’s stu- dents and their families with a fun evening, but also to reach out to the larger community of which the school is a part. The fun fair features a barbe- cue, popcorn and snacks, games and prizes, a jumping castle, tat- toos, face painting, a bake sale, a visit from a fire truck, and a raffle for a number of gift baskets cre- ated by the school’s students. The fun fair is June 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the school, 405 Woodsmere Cres. in Pickering, at the corner of Rosebank Road. Altona Forest in a fun mood durhamregion.comP PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 4, 2006 EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR St rate gy needed to attack smog Feds, provinces must address issue P erhaps the timing is significant: The same week On- tario enacts tough new anti-smoking legislation, a May heat wave leaves us all gasping for breath. Ye s, we can legislate an end to smoking in public places and the resultant second-hand smoke effects, but smog, well that’s another problem entirely. While it wasn’t easy to get to the point where smoking is banned provincewide in workplaces and enclosed public spaces, it will be infinitely more difficult to tackle an issue that impacts every man, woman and child in Ontario. Yo u really can’t get away from smog. And if you live in Durham Region, hard by smog capitals like Toronto and Oshawa, you really pay a price when the mercury rises and air pollution goes off the charts. The simple truth is that, like smoking, smog kills. While the death toll from smog certainly doesn’t ap- proach that of cigarette smoking, the difference is that you can choose to smoke. You don’t have much choice when it comes to breathing. And that brings us to the key question: What plans do governments and businesses have to address smog and other pollutants? It would appear the Stephen Harper Conservatives are eager to ditch Canada’s commitment to the Kyoto Accord. And the Liberals under Jean Chretien and Paul Martin have nothing to brag about either. During 13 years of Lib- eral rule, greenhouse gas emissions skyrocketed and Kyoto targets to get us to 1990 levels by 2012 became more and more unrealistic by the day. So as we prepare for what will likely be another hot sum- mer with smog days the rule, rather than the exception, is there any relief in sight? Plans to bring more hybrid cars on the market, in addi- tion to the ethanol-fueled Impala E85 are certainly a big step in the right direction. If automakers can build environmentally friendly cars that are stylish and affordable the customer will follow. A little nudge from the government for better fuel ef- ficiency and less auto pollutants would help. But the federal government, in concert with the provinc- es, must come up with a strategy to reduce air pollutants. That’s a tough task when measured against the demands of the business community and the creation of jobs. But, as our air gets more dangerous, it’s a strategy we can’t afford to ignore. Stop sign will help pedestrians To the editor: With regards to the new proposed stop sign on Rouge- mount Drive, I would certainly think it would be a deterrent to speeders, as before, unless there was a police officer sitting there, only then would you get a ticket. But now residents can get repeat offenders’ licence numbers and also video offend- ers for the police and have them charged with failing to make a complete stop. There will always be speeders, but at least some of them will now at least come to a rolling stop, which will enable pedestrians to have a chance to get out of the way. T ouring back alleys with a couple of Durham Regional Police of- ficers recently for a feature on graffiti, it was hard not to resort to cli- che to categorize what’s been painted on the walls: It ranges from the good to the bad and, sadly, the downright ugly. Graffiti is an interesting and trou- bling dilemma. At its core it is flat-out vandalism. Any time you spray paint on some- thing that doesn’t belong to you, you’re committing a crime. But having taken in quite a few ex- amples of this urban phenomenon, I find myself feeling somewhat ambiva- lent. I agree there’s no question the run of the mill “F-you” scrawls, and self-in- dulgent tagging -- more or less claim- ing a street corner or alley by way of a distinctive mark -- is unsightly and vulgar. At the same time, I have been struck by the sheer artistry of some of the work out there. This admiration is for the talent, not the method. I’ve found myself musing what a shame it is a particular artist hadn’t chosen a more conventional -- and legal -- means of conveying his or her vision. But I’m a middle-aged white guy; I am about as far removed from the culture that is represented by these paint-wielding youngsters as can possibly be. Graffiti is the mark of a young, urban culture. It is, in its various forms, a form of communication and identifi- cation, as surely as, say, cave paintings or the spectacular carvings left behind by ancient indigenous peoples. We all yearn to leave our mark; it is part of the human condition. So this nuisance will persist. It doesn’t mean the cops shouldn’t try to catch people doing it, just as real- izing drivers will always speed doesn’t mean they should throw away their radar guns. With this in mind, I like what they’ve done at the skateboard park at the Iroquois Park recreation centre in Whitby, which was tagged exten- sively soon after it opened. Realizing it would be futile to erase the graffiti only to have it reappear, Town officials opted to leave it. So the kids who frequent the facility got to have their way. And now they have to live with it. Jeff Mitchell is the Durham Region Media Group’s justice reporter. E-mail jmitchell@durhamregion.com. The water was calm and the skies clear on a recent Sunday afternoon when the Frenchman’s Bay Watershed Rehabilita- tion Project (FBWRP) and the Pickering Dragon Boat Club (PDBC) offered resi- dents an inside experience of the bay. The group gathered at Progress Frenchman’s Bay East Park on Front Street and, after a crash coarse in dragon boating from PDBC coaches Beckie Moss and Scott Murray, young and old loaded into two lengthy boats. Steven Joudrey, with the FBWRP, a non-profit organization that works to enhance the natural features of the bay, acted as tour guide. Mr. Joudrey pointed out various historical and biologi- cal elements of the bay. Within minutes of the journey’s start, a pair of white swans were spotted nesting in the cattails, fol- lowed by a heron who flew above the boats. “We call the marsh nature’s nursery,” Mr. Joudrey said. “Because it is used for breed- ing and nesting.” But Mr. Joudrey also pointed out the ef- fect urbanization has on the wetlands of Frenchman’s Bay. “When development happens it smoth- ers the wetland,” he said. “(Wildlife) is faced with less and less wet- land to make their nests and raise their young.” As the crew made its way around the perimeter of the bay, a mass of terns took flight off of the tern raft the project had installed. The group saw no fish and Mr. Joudrey explained why. “The water is a little impaired by urban run off,” he said. “The water quality re- ally isn’t that good so there are not a lot of fish.” Affecting the water quality, Mr. Joudrey said, is the waste Canada geese leave be- hind, the pesticides used on area lawns and gardens and the salt used on icy win- ter roads. “O ne of the things that happens when you have an urban setting is people like to use the beach,” Mr. Joudrey explained, adding this has an adverse effect on sand- bars, so the project works to maintain the sandbars by planting a number of plant species that help to maintain the sandbars with their deep roots. Rounding out the tour, participants got an explanation of the dredging that hap- pens in the mouth of the bay and future plans to possibly widen the mouth. The two boats then headed back to the shore and participants left with a little more knowledge of the bay and dragon boating. durhamregion.comP PAGE 8 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 4, 2006 Saturday, June 10th, 10 a.m.-4p.m. Petting Z o o&SidewalkSalePetting Z o o&SidewalkSale We Love Kids! A combination of emotional and physical pressures, stress can either help you deal more effectively with challenges and problems or make them many times worse. Some common early signs of stress include; irritability, headaches, digestive problems, pain in neck and shoulders, dizziness and raised blood pressure. With prolonged or regular overstress, these can lead to or develop into conditions that are more serious. Because the mind and body deeply affect each other, too much stress also affects us mentally and Is Stress Affecting Your Health?Anne Dranitsaris, Ph.D. emotionally. Some of the emotional and behavioural changes we can experience include a change in the way we relate to other people. For example, people can become more depressed, withdrawn, and not able to listen to others or be less sensitive towards others. Emotions like anxiety, anger, and frustration can become heightened. There is something we can do about our reac- tion to stress! Because of the nature of stress, drugs do not effectively treat it. However, an approach to living our lives that leads to reduced pain and suffering, physical wellness, and inward peace can be learned through a program called Mindfulness- Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) originally devel- oped by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. This program was designed for people who want to work with their own stress, pain, and illness in order to mobilize their own inner resources of mind and body for growing, heal- ing, and taking charge in new ways in their lives. Stress, which has physical, emotional and mental ramifi cations, has been linked with medical or emotional problems such as hypertension, heart disease, PMS, headache, IBS, cancer, diabetes, panic, anxiety, depression, to name a few. No one sets out to make their life stressful, so chances are you aren’t aware of how you put yourself under stress. No situation creates stress by itself; it is how you think about the situation that makes it stressful. The good news is that you can do something about it by learning to respond to stress differently! Just ask Gordon West, whose company -- LCI Laser – just earned the fi rst ever Consum- ers’ Choice gold medal for laser cosmetics. LCI is an active player in the game, with hair removal just one item on a growing list of non-invasive procedures, including removal of unsightly vari- cose veins, treating sun damaged skin, wrinkle reduction, tattoo-removal and more. But LCI is perhaps best know for solving “hairy” problems. Most LCI customers want the fuzzy stuff gone -gone from the legs, face, un- derarms and naughty bits, too. Women and men who’ve been to LCI have hair in just the right places, while the rest has been zapped by lasers that halt hair growth in its tracks. That’s right— men too. West says a signifi cant number of LCI clients are males seeking smoother chests and backs. LCI has been at the forefront of administering better ways to keep our bodies free of unwanted stubble since it opened in 1997. As one of the oldest clinics of its kind in Canada, LCI now op- erates 16 facilities across Ontario and Quebec, and has performed over 400,000 laser cosmetic treatments to date – more than any other com- pany in the world. As a veteran in the fi eld, West recommends asking some essential questions before deciding which company to approach for laser cosmetic treatments. First, are the technicians experi- enced? LCI’s technicians are all internationally trained medical doctors who have undergone a six-week training course on multiple laser sys- tems. They are then evaluated on a monthly basis thereafter. Other laser clinics, says West, usually under-qualifi ed staff who’ve only com- pleted a 1-2 day long course and that’s it. Another question to ask: what type of laser will be used? LCI has six different types of lasers on-hand to suit a variety of hair and skin types, while the competition, on average, uses only one type of laser. Does the clinic have insurance? LCI is fully insured, but believe it or not, over 50% of laser clinics in the GTA can’t get insurance. Are the procedures painful? LCI uses ad- vanced cooling devices, allowing most clients to be treated pain-free. Does the clinic offer a written guarantee? Many don’t, whereas LCI offers the longest writ- ten guarantee anywhere in North America. What about location and hours or operations? LCI has several locations to serve you better—in Toronto, Mississauga, Markham, Vaughan, North York, Hamilton and the surrounding areas. They’re open every day of the week, including evenings from Monday to Friday. With treatments ranging from the removal of unsightly facial, chest or leg spider veins, to photo rejuvenation, microdermabrasion, chemi- cal peels, fi llers, depigmentation, tattoo removal and botox, LCI offers a roster of advanced laser cosmetic treatments—all of which are performed using state-of-the-art laser technology. It’s no wonder LCI beat out more than 100 of it’s competitors to claim the 2005 Consumers’ Choice Award. And, most of the off-season wheeling and dealing has cen- tred around a trio of Ajax resi- dents who’ve decided to return and play in their home town for the coming OHA Ontario Pro- vincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League 2006-07 season. The Attack recently complet- ed a cash deal for Ajax resident Chuck MacLennan, who was ob- tained from the Hamilton Red Wings of the league’s West Con- ference. Prior to playing in Ham- ilton, the 20-year-old played for the Huntsville-Muskoka Otters of the league’s North Conference. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound wing- er played most of two season with the Otters before being trad- ed to Hamilton with nine games remaining in the 2005- 06 cam- paign. In 39 games with Huntsville, MacLennan amassed 19 goals and 17 assists and, in nine games with H amilton, had one goal and five assists. Attack head coach Carey Du- rant says MacLennan will have a positive effect on the team’s offence, which was one of the lowest scoring in the conference last season. “We think he’ll have a huge im- pact on our team,” says Durant. The club is also bringing aboard Ajacians Craig McDon- ald, a forward, and defenceman Ja mie Kennedy, who played with the Otters last season. Durant says the clubs have agreed on terms for McDonald, but are put- ting the finishing touches on the deal. “We’re making a very strong move to bring back local players to Ajax,” says Durant. McDonald, at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, played in 47 games with the Otters last season, accumu- lating 14 goals and 26 assists. Meanwhile, Kennedy, a 6-foot, 186-pound rearguard, had a goal and eight assists last season. In addition, the Attack signed forward Ryan Algar, formerly of the Alliston Hornets of the Georgian Mid-Ontario Junior ‘C’ Hockey League. Algar was the leading scorer with the Hornets last season with 19 goals and 31 assists in 39 games. He was also the league’s leading scorer the season before. “He’s a very good hockey play- er. He can play in our league for sure,” says Durant. The Attack has also obtained the rights to Shane Heffernan of the Waterloo Siskins of the Midwestern Junior ‘B’ Hockey League. In 23 games with the Siskins last season, the 5-foot, 10, 175-pound left wing had seven goals and 10 assists. “He’s an explosive forward who’s one of the fastest players in the league,” says Durant. Durant credits the team’s staff of head scout Frank Neal and regional scout Lonnie Freeman, along with new general manag- er John Tugnutt, for beating the bushes for players who can help the Attack improve upon last sea- son’s meagre results, including five wins and a last-place finish in the South Conference. “Our scouting staff has been identifying veteran players to play for us this season. John and I are working hard to make sure these transactions work,” he says. “I think it shows the town of Ajax that our owner (Rob Stein) is serious about having a winning team this year. “O n paper, our team is a lot better than it was last year.” The Attack open training camp for the 2006-07 campaign in mid- August. Ajax Attack brings back hometown contingent for ’06-07 season Carey Durant Notre Dame boys and girls kick off provincial ‘AAAA’ championships on Monday By Al Rivett Sports Editor AJAX — Although it’s been a long time between meaningful soccer games, the Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Cou- gars’ senior boys’ squad is none- theless ready for the provincial playdowns. The Cougars are one of 16 teams at the 2006 Ontario Fed- eration of School Athletic Asso- ciations (OFSAA) ‘AAAA’ boys’ soccer championships June 5 to 7 in Toronto. Darren Hodkinson, head coach of the Cougars, says its been a challenge to keep the team fo- cused and training through the winter months as Notre Dame won the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) ‘AAAA’ title back in October. Since January the team has trained indoors and, most re- cently, Notre Dame has relied on exhibition friendlies, includ- ing one against Ajax rival Arch- bishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School Chargers (DO’C) at the north Ajax school Wednes- day. “It’s been a long stretch and it has been challenging to stay together,” says Hodkinson. The Cougars have also lost three players -- Lloyd Headridge, Antonio Ricci and Eric Gonzalves -- all to graduation last semes- ter. All were on the champion- ship team last fall. Hodkinson acknowledges the losses will be felt, but says the depth of play- ers within the school, especially those in the junior squad, which also won the LOSSA title, will help soften the blow. “The junior program has helped us plug a few holes. We have depth and a lot of talented kids here,” he says. In the course of arranging ex- hibition games, Hodkinson says he’s tried to arrange contests against schools also playing at OFSAA. “We’ve played some Toronto teams and we know we can com- pete with them. It’s just a matter of getting back in the swing of things. We finished the (LOSSA) season on a high note and I think the kids will put it all together,” he says. In previous exhibition games against DO’C, the Cougars dropped a 3-1 decision, as well as earning a 2-2 draw. The teams involved and the seedings haven’t been released yet by the OFSAA organizing committee. Hodkinson is unsure where the Cougars might end up in the seedings. What is known is that they begin play at 10:30 a.m. on Mon- day, June 5 against Pope John Paul II Catholic Secondary School. At 1:30 p.m., Notre Dame plays Holy Trinity. Meanwhile, the Cougars’ se- nior girls’ team also earned a berth at OFSAA, playing at the provincials in Durham Region from June 5 to 7 at Whitby’s Iro- quois Park fields. As LOSSA is the host of this year’s OFSAA ‘AAAA’ champion- ships, two Durham teams are in- cluded in the schedule. The Cougars’ girls open play against St. Anne High School, the Southwestern Ontario Second- ary School Athletic Association champion, Monday at 9 a.m. at the Consumers South field. The Cougars gained entrance to OFSAA showcase after finish- ing as runners-up in LOSSA this year. In the championship game last Thursday, Notre Dame lost to Sinclair Secondary School Celtics of Whitby 1-0 in golden goal overtime. In the semifinals, the Cougars defeated old nemesis and over- whelming favourites St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Mon- archs of Pickering, 1-0 on pen- alty kicks. The Monarchs had de- feated Notre Dame by 3-0 scores during the regular season. In other high school soccer news, DO’C is also travelling to the OFSAA championships, play- ing at the 20-team ‘AA’ senior boys’ showcase in St. Catharines from June 5 to 7. The Chargers are slotted in Pool ‘C’ with George Harvey Sec- ondary School from Toronto, St. Charles College Cardinals, St. Mary’s High School, the New- market High School Raiders and the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders. DO’C begins pool play versus the St. Charles College from north- ern Ontario on Monday at 10:30 a.m. Soccer Cougars ready to roar at OFSAA Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Phil Griffin of the Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School Chargers gets a hand in the face of Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Cougars’ Lee-Andrew Young during a senior boys’ soccer friendly at Notre Dame Wednesday. Ajax-Pickering football squad mauls Mississauga 48-6 DURHAM — The newest Ajax- Pickering Dolphins Football Club team emerged victorious from its inaugural game in the Allstar Peewee Football League. The APFL is in its first season, with 12 teams competing from across southern Ontario. Among the clubs Ajax-Pickering will play are teams from Mississauga, Brampton, Guelph, Brantford, Markham, Kitchener-Wa- terloo, and Wentworth. The Dolphins started their season on the right cleat, defeating the Missis- sauga Warriors 48-6 in Mississauga on May 27. Mississauga started strongly, scoring the first touchdown for a 6-0 lead. Dol- phins’ wide receiver Michael Robson scored Ajax-Pickering’s first-ever APFL touchdown on a pass from George To urloukis late in the first quarter. With the extra point, the Dolphins squad took the lead and never looked back. The offence moved the ball down the field with authority, with Kurlan Cadet leading the scoring parade with three touchdowns. Matt Townsend, Kareem Tucker and Dillon Campbell added majors. Dexter Damboise was good on six of seven extra point at- tempts. After giving up the touchdown, the Dolphins’ defence came together and put up its ‘Teal Curtain’. Special teams kept the Warriors off balance, with three recovered balls and two big re- turns on punts. The Dolphins’ coaching staff was proud and pleased with the all-round performance. “The team is coming together as a unit, and if they continue to put forth this kind of effort we will have an ex- cellent season,” says head coach Jim Fa rrell. “This is a great group of boys. They congratulate each other coming off the field and are very supportive of each other. It is really rewarding for the coaches to see this happening.” Dolphins’ home games are at Pine Ridge Secondary School, 2155 Liver- pool Rd. N., Pickering. The Dolphins travel to Brampton today (Sunday) for a contest against Brampton 2 at Sandlewood Park at 3:30 p.m. The next home game is against Brampton 1 on Sunday, June 11 at 4 p.m. The team’s schedule is on the Dolphins’ website at www.dolphinsfootball.ca. For thousands of local area homeowners, it has always been the people and personal attention that set this company apart from other renovators. RENOCanada’s staff understand reno- vation from the customer’s perspective. They know that home improvement is not about the house, it’s about self improvement (Life- style), it’s personal. The company describes their primary customers as “discerning” homeowners. These are people that don’t necessarily have big budgets but who feel that Bathrooms and Kitchens need to be exciting regardless of budget. They have higher expectations; demanding seamless service from inspira- tion to installation and an overall experience that is hassle-free, educational and reward- ing. Discerning customers don’t want to be sold anything but want someone to act as an “editor” helping them to make choices that are right for them.
