HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2006_03_10 Ve r dict frees man after nine months in custody By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer DURHAM — A Pickering man walked out of court a free man Wednesday night after a jury acquit- ted him of attempted murder and weapons charges. Sean Grant, 25, wept when jurors delivered their verdict shortly after 8 p.m. His lawyer, Sean Robichaud, drove Mr. Grant home to see his two young children after he was re- leased. “Sean’s very happy,” Mr. Robi- chaud said. “He spent nine months in custody. He had no criminal re- cord and he still doesn’t.” Mr. Grant waited about seven hours for the verdict after the jury re- tired in the early afternoon Wednes- day. The verdict came two weeks to the day after jurors started hearing evidence in the case. Although Mr. Grant admitted he stabbed Greg Baker three times on the night of June 11, 2005, he in- sisted he was fighting in self-defence after the larger man attacked him. The confrontation occurred outside the home of Mr. Baker’s parents on Rosefield Road in Pickering, when Mr. Grant showed up looking to get a refund for marijuana he said he bought from Mr. Baker’s sister, An- drea. Mr. Baker, now 29, nearly died from injuries inflicted during the fight with Mr. Grant. A major artery ‘ Long overdue’ hospital project should start next year By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — Dr. Tom Stavro is so excited about Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering’s new emergency depart- ment he has goosebumps. The chief of emergency services at the Rouge Valley Health System took David Caplan, Ontario’s minis- ter of public infrastructure renewal, on a tour of the cramped emer- gency room that was built for 20,000 visits a year, but now sees 47,000 because of the rapid growth in Ajax, Pickering and Whitby. Mr. Caplan was there yesterday to bring the official announcement that the Province has approved the hospital’s redevelopment project. Dr. Stavro and the emergency de- partment staff will have their new emergency department, which will be built for 60,000 visits annually, in a few years. “This is so exciting; I’ve got goose- bumps thinking about it now,” Dr. Stavro told Mr. Caplan. “The com- munity needs this. It is long over- due.” With the community’s share of the funding ready and waiting and the ink dry on the drawings, every- one was waiting for the final piece of the puzzle -- the green light from the Province. Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge MPP Wayne Arthurs made it official to a packed room of hospital staff, vol- unteers, donors, as well as local pol- iticians, yesterday morning. Con- struction is to begin in the 2007-08 fiscal year. “For some that may seem a long way away yet, but it’s not,” he said. He hopes there is a shovel in the ground by summer 2007. Mr. Caplan said he could feel the energy of the room and was well aware of what this project means to the community. Council voted 5-2 at Monday’s meeting against passing a bylaw to regulate the use of replica firearms in Pickering. “The more I read about it and the more calls I get about it... Every e-mail and call I got was why would the City want to do this?” said Ward 1 City Councillor Kevin Ashe. Staff were asked to prepare a bylaw, which included banning those 18 and under from possessing a replica firearm on public property, after Durham police Con- stable Todd Petzold made a presentation at the Feb. 20 council meeting. He shared his concern about the potential danger to children of carrying very realistic looking replica guns. Following that presentation, Coun. Ashe expressed his strong objections to the idea, saying it was “government run amok.” He continued sharing his concerns Monday evening. “We’re talking about banning toys in the City of Pickering,” he said. Coun. Ashe went on to point out several areas of the bylaw that are already covered with criminal legislation, such as using a replica firearm to harm or instil fear. He was not alone in his opposition. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean, a retired Toronto police officer, also didn’t support it. “What we are doing is reinventing the wheel,” he said. “There’s plenty of laws in place to deal with replica handguns.” Wa rd 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson said he was in favour after Const. Petzold’s presentation, but after speaking with resi- dents, changed his mind. “O ne thing that keeps ringing into my mind are those residents who said ‘don’t you guys have anything better to deal with’,” he said. Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick John- son was away on municipal business and missed Const. Petzold’s presentation, al- though he did see it at regional council. “The problem isn’t with replica guns, the problem is with penalties if you’re found with a gun,” he said. “I appreciate the handguns they showed us at regional council are exact replicas, but the problem is with federal and provincial laws.” Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles tried to have the bylaw deferred until the April 4 council meeting so councillors could have more time to hear from resi- dents. As well, that would be after the po- lice liaison committee’s next meeting. His deferral motion lost and he voted in favour of the bylaw. Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner was the other ‘yes’ vote. Coun. Brenner thought councillors were missing part of the intent of the bylaw, that of protecting children. “When you have young children who use these toy guns... The optics and per- ception of that child with the replica puts that child at risk,” he said. “It’s a split sec- ond decision if (a police officer) believes a crime is being committed.” Councillors did talk about the need to educate young people about the potential consequences of carrying a replica firearm in a public place. He and Andrea Baker, 24, portrayed Mr. Grant as the aggressor, saying he had harassed Ms. Baker for several days before showing up to con- front the young woman. Crown witnesses said Mr. Grant pulled a knife from his waistband and announced he was going to kill Mr. Baker as tensions mounted. The trial was highlighted by sometimes testy exchanges be- tween Mr. Robichaud and the two primary Crown witnesses. Both Andrea and Greg Baker bristled when Mr. Robichaud suggested they had lured Mr. Grant to the townhouse the night of the fight to intimidate or attack him to make him leave Ms. Baker alone. Mr. Grant took the stand in his own defence, telling the jurors he was ambushed and beaten after Ms. Baker invited him to the house. He said he was only look- ing to get his money back after being ripped off in a dope deal arranged by Ms. Baker. Jurors heard Ms. Baker in- troduced Mr. Grant to a friend of hers who sold him a quarter pound of pot. But Mr. Grant was immediately dissatisfied with the quantity and quality of the mari- juana. He contacted Ms. Baker several times in an attempt to get a refund, and twice went to Ms. Baker’s parents’ home on Rose- field. Andrea Baker told her brother Greg about Mr. Grant hassling her, jurors heard. Mr. Baker admitted he twice called Mr. Grant, angrily vowing the second time to kill him and burn down his barber shop. But he insisted on the stand he was hoping to peacefully settle the dispute between Mr. Grant and Ms. Baker. Ultimately, the jury seems to have accepted Mr. Grant’s claim of self-defence. “I think the deciding factor was the jury’s application of reason- able doubt,” Mr. Robichaud said. The defence lawyer praised the jury’s decision. “It shows the importance of ju- ries,” he said, noting the acquittal resulted in Mr. Grant’s emerging from custody for the first time since he surrendered to police last June. He was twice denied bail during that time of incar- ceration. “It also shows how important our bail system is,” Mr. Robi- chaud said. “We have to give the benefit of the doubt and realize the bail system is premised on the pre- sumption of innocence.” CORRECTION NOTICE We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers and thank you for your patience. At Durham College, stu- dents in the two-year pri- mary care paramedic course need to complete 500 hours in an ambulance, in addition to writing the provincial Ad- vanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant exam. “It’s an intense course, we work really hard,” said sec- ond-year student Mark Ar- rand. “And now we have to worry about not graduating or not getting hired.” Mr. Arrand, 21, said miss- ing class is a pain, but not nearly as frustrating as miss- ing the 25 or so hours a week that he spends in an ambulance gaining work experience. Insurance and safety regulations dictate that without a teacher to contact, students can’t head out on placement. He added that most stu- dents in the paramedic pro- gram are hired quickly after graduation, but that could change. “The services aren’t going to change their recruitment schedules for us,” Mr. Arrand said. “The exam schedules aren’t going to change for us either and we need to have the hours done to write them.” All he and his classmates can do now is cross their fin- gers and hope the strike is resolved quickly. While all Durham College students are missing classes, some are able to continue with co-op and field placements while the strike is on -- even picking up extra hours in their new- found free time. Gary Connell, a third-year accounting student, says his class requires 20 days at a placement, which students complete one day a week. He normally heads to the ac- counting office at Nokia in Ajax, but this week his place- ment employer offered him extra hours. “It’s actually kind of a bonus for me,” he said. “But in some other courses they do all the placement hours in the last month of the semes- ter and if they can’t go people are going to be really mad.” Student Association presi- dent Thomas Coughlan stressed that all students at the college are affected re- gardless of placement obli- gations and said even those at UOIT where classes are in session, feel the impact. Ap- proximately 5,800 full-time Durham College students and 4,000 continuing educa- tion students are being af- fected by the strike, while UOIT and University of Trent at Oshawa classes are con- tinuing. No new talks have been scheduled since the colleges and the Ontario Public Ser- vice Employees Union failed to reach an agreement Mon- day. 2000 Champlain Ave., Whitby 905-579-7573 905-683-CAMP(2267) • Rentals • Parts • Service • Sales www.owasco.com Y OU ’ RE IN OWASCO C OUNTRY Y OU ’ RE IN OWASCO C OUNTRY T HINK S PRING ...T HINK J AYCO ! We were herded into a courtroom and asked to fill out a form indicating occupation, name, and so forth. The forms were put into a drum that rotated. The person rotating the drum would pick out one of the forms and call out that person’s name. The person would then proceed to the front of the courtroom, and while on his way up there, all of his personal information would be read out so that everyone in the courtroom could hear it including the accused. I found it discouraging that anyone in that courtroom would have this information. In this case the person accused in court had committed an act of killing a per- son while robbing a jewelry store in Ontario. There were four people involved -- they or their friends could easily track you down. The system is flawed. It is dangerous for the jury. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com Residents are the ones who suffer, pay P ickering would like the upper lev- els of government to show it the money. Treasurer Gil Paterson released a bleak budget preview at a recent man- agement forum meeting -- a preview that included a whopping potential tax increase next year of 15.85 per cent. The possible solutions pitched by City staff sounded similar to those that come out of Toronto budget talks, not suburban municipality budget discus- sions. Normally, it’s Ontario’s capital suggesting selling off assets or asking the federal and provincial governments for cash. But those words were coming out of Mr. Paterson’s mouth. And Pickering appears to have a good case for any request it might make to those wealthier governments. Staff said there are a combination of factors that have brought Pickering to this place of very limited financial flex- ibility: provincial downloading and low assessment growth (and possibly those half-dozen years in the 1990s where there were no tax increases, although most of Ontario municipalities had those). It’s easy to figure out where the blame lies on the provincial downloading front, but Pickering councillors and staff con- tend the city wouldn’t be in its unique low growth situation had it not been for the decisions of the provincial and federal governments 34 years ago. Pickering has had little room to grow in the last few years as it reached its urban boundary because nearly half of its land is controlled by those other levels of government. The expropriation of thousands of acres for an airport and thousands more to build a city -- neither of which has happened yet -- means while its neighbours are enjoying the eastern building boom with four or five per cent assessment growth, Pickering had just 0.5 per cent in 2005. This means those other municipali- ties have four per cent more money in their budgets to work with before even factoring in a tax increase. And, granted costs do increase because of growth, but that extra money has to be nice. Everyone is used to governments cry- ing poor when it comes to tax time, but in Pickering’s case the tears seem genu- ine. It’s not councillors or staff suffering in this situation, but rather the taxpayers who see their tax rate -- which is re- gressive, unlike other forms of taxation -- continue to rise and rise. The tide does seem to be turning with the talk of a new deal for cities and the announcements of funding partner- ships in recent years, but the people of Pickering could do with a little gift in the meantime. Danielle Milley’s column ap- pears every third Friday. E-mail dmilley@durhamregion.com. Budgets get tough for Pickering Danielle Milley staff writer Finally, desperately needed relief Hospital expansion long overdue R ing the church bells and launch the fireworks. Ajax, Pickering and Whitby residents are in a celebra- tory mood after learning yesterday that the long-awaited $59.1 million expansion and redevelopment project at the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital has been given the green light. However, for most Ajax and Pickering residents, who contrib- uted more than $20 million to the campaign, this is as far be- yond good news as a gold medal for Canada in Olympic men’s hockey would have been at the recent games in Italy. Heck, it’s fantastic. No issue has been of more concern to local residents than the uncertainty surrounding the hospital. If the barrage of support letters we’ve received on the issue doesn’t indicate that, look no further than the December public meeting held at the Ajax Community Centre by the Friends of the Ajax and Pickering Hospital. It was called when the hospital was poised to transfer obstetrics and pediatric services from Ajax, but the decision was reversed and the rally of 1,000 people once again showed the community’s commitment and passion for our hospital. It’s been proven again and again: when a lot of people are for or against something, governments and corporations listen. And here in Ajax, Pickering and Whitby, residents built the hos- pital and have continued to be astute stewards of its operations and growth ever since. With the population in the three com- munities rapidly blowing by the 300,000 mark, it wasn’t just an argument that the project should go ahead; it was self-evident. Ajax, Pickering and Whitby have long outgrown their hospi- tal, and it’s clearly time to catch up. When you have to continu- ally shuttle patients from bed to bed and department to depart- ment due to space constraints, something is clearly wrong. The expansion will go a long way toward bringing the hospital into the 21st century. It will also send a message of stability to the community and will aid the administration as it works to attract top personnel and deliver services. However, it seems like much more than a coincidence that the project was approved soon after a provincial byelection was called for the Whitby-Ajax Riding, a race the Liberals would like desperately to win. A decision of such importance to residents shouldn’t have become an election goodie, a reason for backing a Liberal candidate. Regardless, the news is long overdue and ensures our com- munity hospital can finally meet our growing needs. Hospital project gets green light By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — The day so many have been waiting for arrived Thursday — the Prov- ince finally gave the go-ahead to the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering redevelopment proj- ect. Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge MPP Wayne Arthurs and Min- ister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan made the announcement to a room full of happy staff members, physicians, community mem- bers, and local politicians. Yvonne Bosch, co-chair- woman of the Friends of the Ajax-Pickering Hospital, was there for the announcement, along with several other mem- bers. “We are very happy about the things that happened today,” she said. The group has been fighting to see services at its hospital expanded to meet the future needs of the growing commu- nity and ensure it gets stronger. Getting the redevelopment project approved was one thing they were fighting for and, al- though it shows a commitment to the hospital from the Prov- ince and administration, they say there is still uncertainty. “We still feel we have to stay vigilant about the services in the hospital here,” she said. Dave Sinclair, chairman of the Rouge Valley Health Sys- tem’s board, hopes this calms some of the fear in the com- munity. “Hopefully it brings stability and takes away uncertainty,” he said. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish shares the same hope. “I hope it is not just the ex- pansion project itself, but is a symbol that there is a full com- mitment to the existence and growth of the Ajax-Pickering site,” he said. Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan said this is a good beginning to the rebuilding of the relation- ship between the community and the hospital. “When you lose trust it takes a while to regain, this is an im- portant and excellent first step,” he said. Both mayors were on hand to hear the good news. “We are very happy. We’ve been waiting a long time for the government to give the green light to the Ajax-Pickering hos- pital expansion,” Mayor Parish said. He’ll be even more pleased when the Town issues a build- ing permit, which he hopes happens early next year. “It’s good news for Ajax, good news for health care in west Durham,” he said. Mayor Ryan shared that sen- timent. “I’m pleased,” he said. “I would just like to acknowledge the hard work of the commu- nity at large, who have contrib- uted so much to this project.” Tracy Paterson, president of the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade, was at the announce- ment with many members of the business community. “The business community is all united in wanting this for the community,” she said, adding all the questions at the board’s recent mayors’ breakfast were about health care. Ms. Pater- son works for the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation. Pickering just last month at an Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade breakfast where most ques- tions were about this project. He received a standing ovation after he spoke. In an interview after the an- nouncement, he said it has taken so long for the project to be approved because there are $9 billion worth of capital projects around the province waiting to be built. He said the Province took many factors into account, in- cluding the age of the building and the population growth, be- fore final approval was made. Growth was a big factor. “Why we wanted to give this project the green light is be- cause we didn’t just have to meet the needs of today, but the needs we foresee in the fu- ture in Ajax, Pickering and Dur- ham Region,” he said. No one would put a dollar figure on the project because it will be going out to private ten- der, but in the past the hospital’s figures put it at $59.1 million. Once the expansion is com- pleted, the hospital will have an expanded emergency room, di- agnostic imaging department, ambulatory care unit, complex continuing care unit, laborato- ry, and mental health services. Once a shovel’s in the ground, construction should take 36 to 48 months. The project is being funded through alternative financing and procurement, meaning the construction work will be financed and carried out by the private sector, but the com- pleted facility will be publicly owned. Mr. Caplan explained it was like a mortgage where the Prov- ince would pay back the private sector financier over a period of years, allowing for the transfer of risk. “Once we establish in con- tract with them what the bud- get is, they’ll deliver at that price and if it goes over, the private-sector consortium has to absorb those costs,” he said. Mr. Caplan also gave assur- ances there would be the op- erating dollars in place to fund the newly expanded facility. “What would be the point of making this kind of investment in this wonderful building if we didn’t use it to the capacity and ability to drive that care,” he said. Rouge Valley president and chief executive officer Hume Martin said getting the funding up for 905-area hospitals is key. With the move to Local Health Integrated Networks (LHINs), he believes they should be funded on a population basis and this would fix the inequi- ties. The next step for the rede- velopment is for the hospital to work with the Province as it prepares the contract docu- ments. Accident awareness DURHAM — With smashed up cars, an accident awareness team is going into schools and educating students on safe driving. Bob Annan, president of Accident Aw areness Inc., made a presentation dur- ing the March 6 Durham District School Board standing committee meeting on the work the group has been doing in Durham and other schools. “I’ve seen the accident cars around and they are very sobering,” said Oshawa Trustee Kathleen Hopper. She said she has three young men at home and thinks the Accident Awareness displays could be very helpful in saving lives. Accident Awareness Inc.’s mission is to educate people on the realities of fatal collisions. The group provides free lectures at schools, mostly to senior students, that concentrate on speeding, reaction time, seat-belts and speed races, as well as impaired driving — a problem amongst all ages, said Mr. Annan. It also brings along a crashed car that was involved in a fatal- ity for emphasis. Canadian Parents for French update DURHAM — Canadian Parents for French provided public school board trustees with an update this week on its activities. A group created by parents interest- ed in French language skills, CPF Durham meets near the end of each month at the Durham District School Board head- quarters, said member Sherri Gauvreau, during the board’s March 6, standing committee meeting. “We have found French immersion is one of the most effective things we have for making children bilingual,” said Ms. Gauvreau. The group has organized French camps in Ajax and Pickering as well as a French movie night in Ajax cinemas. Dur- ing the information presentation, Oshawa Trustee Mike Barrett asked what CPF’s position is on students still requiring 10 French immersion credits in high school, even though the curriculum was short- ened to four years. A French immersion parent himself, Mr. Barrett has heard support and protest over the 10-credit requirement. “What we want to do is support you, but we don’t want to support you in the wrong way,” said Ajax Wards 1 and 2 Trustee Marilyn Crawford. Heather Stauble, vice-president of CPF Ontario, said the 10-credit system is supported because it provides the high- est outcome and proficiency in learning. “And we’d love to have more choices in any high school,” said Ms. Gauvreau. Seven current locations to be merged into one building; new facility to be ready in three years By Izabela Jaroszynski Staff Writer DURHAM — The Durham Consoli- dated Courthouse is one step closer to completion. The Ontario government has of- ficially invited bidding from the three short-listed groups for a proposal to design, build, finance and maintain the courthouse, which is to be con- structed in Oshawa’s downtown core. Announced in December 2005, the 360,000-square-foot project will see a state-of-the-art, integrated court fa- cility built at 150 Bond St. E. The facility will consolidate jus- tice services currently being deliv- ered from seven locations in the re- gion and will house 33 courtrooms, three motions rooms, two conference rooms and related justice services. Oshawa Mayor John Gray said the project will help to rejuvenate the downtown core. “Up to 1,800 visitors will conduct business in the building on a peak daily basis, which will spur increased demand for office space, restaurant meals and other services in the area,” he said in a recent press release. The courthouse will be built on a former brownfield site, which fits into the city’s Brownfields Commu- nity Improvement Plan to encour- age the cleanup and redevelopment of former industrial and commercial lands. According to the Ontario govern- ment, the courthouse is to be built to Leadership in Energy and Envi- ronmental Design (LEED) standards, including rigorous requirements for energy management and conserva- tion. The target is an early 2009 con- struction completion date. According to Jon Kelly, CEO of Ontario’s Responsible Gambling Council (RGC), there are huge myths surrounding the notorious one-armed bandits — some people believe they can predict a payout by where the machine is placed. Others are convinced that playing for a certain amount of time or at a certain time of day, will guarantee a win. “These are electronic machines that spew out numbers, the chances of in- fluencing them a r e zero,” Mr. Kelly said. “They are controlled by a ran- dom number genera- tor and the tim- ing is pure serendip- ity.” Dispelling miscon- ceptions about slot machines is just one focus of the Within Limits campaign, a month-long initiative organized by the RGC, to raise awareness of problem gam- bling. According to Mr. Kelly, slots are a key focus because they are the only game found to be popular among men and women of all ages — one in five Ontarians will play a slot machine this year. In compari- son, bingo is popular among older women, while poker and online games attract youth, and sports betting is a mostly male interest. Steve Chaisson, a problem gam- bling counsellor at Pinewood Centre, agreed that slot machines are a big draw — about half of his clients are struggling with them. He said it is important to understand that no one is exempt from developing a gambling problem, and that gambling is often used as a way to block out under- lying problems such as grief, stress, or loneliness. “O ne of the biggest reinforcers isn’t the financial aspect, it’s the absence of whatever else is going on in the person’s life... gam- bling lets them take a break and forget about it,” he explained. “Instead of a problem, some people see gambling as the solution.” In addition to newspaper and radio ads, the RGC will set up booths in 60 casinos, racetracks and other gambling venues in communi- ties across Ontario this month, and Pinewood staff will be on hand at Ajax Downs and the Great Blue Heron Ca- sino in Scugog. Mr. Kelly said they will be pushing the recognition and prevention messages, because like any other addic- tion, a gambling problem is easiest to treat before it gets too serious. According to the RGC, red flags include a steady increase in the amount of time and money spent on gambling and using money that should be off limits. “We see people take money for rent or money out of their RSP, or even their children’s education fund to gamble with,” Mr. Kelly said. Mr. Chaisson advised people to cut their risks by viewing the games as entertainment instead of a money- making opportunity, and sticking to time and money limits. When dealing with slots specifi- cally, he said players should consider that the game is constant and fast- paced and take regular breaks. Individuals concerned about their gambling habits or those of a family member or friend can visit the Pine- wood website at www.pine- woodcentre.org to learn more about one-on-one counselling, support groups and education programs offered throughout Dur- ham. Phragmites, or common reed, has been poking up in disturbed wetland areas, such as in storm outfall ponds or where other work has been done, said Libby Racansky, a Courtice environmen- talist who has been spearheading a drive to get rid of the nuisance plant. The problem, said Central Lake Ontar- io Conservation Authority spokeswoman Kathy Luttrell, is that it “completely colo- nizes an area, and chokes out the native species.” It’s only in the past few years that it’s begun to show up in worrying quantities in Durham, though it’s been seen south of the border for some time now, said Ms. Racansky. Locally, she’s found it in a number of places in the Courtice area, and it’s also been noticed along the Hwy. 401 cor- ridor. There’s currently no biological control available for the weed, said Ms. Luttrell, and chemical controls are not only not approved in Canada, but also would be inappropriate for wetlands. The best way to get rid of it is to cut it down, spread black plastic over it for a number of days and wait for it to die away, she said. Then, the area is repopulated with native spe- cies. But, that’s very labour intensive and can be quite expensive. The Province has agreed to help out with the mowing and destruction of the plant along the 401, said Ms. Racansky. The authority is working on a strategy for monitoring invasive species, and educating the pub- lic. Ms. Racansky is also hoping for help from both the Region and Clarington, to help control the weed. “If it spreads here like in the U.S., I don’t know what can be done,” she said. “We have to start at the beginning, not leave it.” I nvasive weed target of CLOCA, communit y Over 1,400 folks have chosen a whole new way of living by moving to Wilmot Creek. The college received $100,000 in new funding last month. It was part of a $10-million fund- ing announcement made by the Province. Durham College president Gary Polonsky said the money comes with “no strings at- tached. “We’re investing it in services to students. We could hire a cou- ple of faculty members or buy lab equipment.” He noted the college wasn’t expecting the money. “We’re not all that small anymore. We’re not northern and we’re not all that rural.” He said about 90 per cent of Durham may be rural, but 95 per cent of its people live in close proximity to Hwy. 401. “We were pleasantly surprised the government included us in that funding,” he added. The funding is part of the pro- vincial government’s Reaching Higher Plan, which will see the investment of an additional $6.2 billion in post-secondary edu- cation over the next five years. The goal is to improve quality, accessibility and accountability in post-secondary education. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, March 10, 2006 PAGE 17 A/Pdurhamregion.com We ’re all familiar with the saying, “You get what you pay for” and this axiom couldn’t be truer than when it comes to choosing a heating and air conditioning company. If you’re looking for superior quality, service and reliability, consider Rodman’s Heating and Air Conditioning, a locally owned and operated business and Durham fixture since 1949. “We have satisfied customers because we do what we say we are going to do, when we said we would do it, and at the price we quoted,” says Kirk Dick of Rodman’s. “We have a good reputation because we earned it by living up to our word and our customers’ expectations, for over 57years!” While part of Rodman’s reputation is based on its superior service by licensed technicians, the other part is based on its loyalty and commitment to customers. This business treats people like family or old friends and not just another number. As part of its commitment to delivering superior service to customers, Rodman’s is well aware of homeowners’ budget and environmental concerns. Rodman’s is pleased to inform customers that homeowners with older operating systems can start saving money on their monthly electricity bill. How so? A new minimum efficiency standard has been put into effect (it has rose to 13 SEER from 10), and as of January 2006 all newly manufactured air conditioning equipment must comply with these standards. If you own an older system that needs repair, or if it is just simply time to replace your system, purchasing a higher efficiency model will give you two advantages: 1. You’ll start saving money on utility bills and, 2. Yo u’ll be able to make the switch at today’s costs instead of tomorrow’s. The exact amount that you will save on your monthly bill will, however, depend on the efficiency of your current system. For example, a 13 SEER efficiency delivers about 23 per cent energy savings compared to 10 SEER models, and about 8 per cent energy savings compared to 12 SEER models. DURHAM — The Community Jus- tice Alternatives of Durham Region is offering a mediation skills training course. The 21-hour course, on March 31, April 1 and 2, and April 21 to 23 for advanced courses, deals with conflict styles, active listening, mediation and anger. “We teach them the process of going through a mediation,” Suzette Lewis, program co-ordinator said. Typically, the skills are used when two parties, such as neighbours or a tenant and landlord, are unable to deal with a conflict in a way that has a resolution, according to Ms. Lewis. “The process is great,” Ms. Lewis said. “And it puts harmony back into the community.” The course is open to the public and is often taken by police officers, paralegals, doctors and teachers, she said. According to Ms. Lewis, the skills can be used at home, in the work- place or community. The course is at the New Hope Dwellings, 130 Mary St. N., in Os- hawa, is limited to 15 people and costs $450.For more information call 905-683-8615 ext. 225. ˜On select new 36-month Rogers Wireless rate plans. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, March 10, 2006 PAGE 21 A/Pdurhamregion.com ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT infodurhamregion.com By Christy Chase Staff Editor DURHAM — The blurring of re- ality and illusion comes to life in Edward Albee’s ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’, being presented by Oshawa Little Theatre. One of Albee’s first hits, the play is “a biting drama” and something local actors can “sink their teeth into,” said director Michael Savage, of Whitby. “It’s a heavy-duty show,” he said. “I think it’s a play Oshawa Little Theatre has been wanting to do for quite a while.” The four roles, two couples at a fictitious university in a fictitious New England town, have some meat on them, he added. George and Martha are an older couple, George being an aging professor at the school and Martha, his wife and daughter of the university president. Nick and Honey are a young couple, Nick just new on the university staff. “It is after a cocktail party,” when George and Martha have brought Nick and Honey home for a drink or two. What results is a night of talking, insults, fighting and drinking. “The action is continuous until dawn,” Savage said, adding the play- wright has juxtaposed 20 years of marriage with two years of marriage and 20 years of college life to none. It’s “what happens when relation- ships get down to the core, when you scratch the surface and find it’s not all what it appears.” “He was commenting on the re- sponse to the Cold War and the public which was just beginning to question the image of 1950s Amer- ica and family, ‘Leave it to Beaver’ families,” he said. When Albee wrote it, he was look- ing at American ideals, American families. Today, the play can be looked at in terms of global family, Savage said. The same questions apply. Savage said he’s enjoying working with the play and bringing the many meanings to the front. “I like to roll up my sleeves and understand why words are where they are in the script,” he said. “I like to be able to comb through literary values, so much imagery and repre- sentations.” There are references through- out to reality versus illusion, love and hate, the American dream and Christian allegory, he said. For the actors, the three-act play comes with some baggage, namely its fame from the original on Broad- way with Uta Hagen and Arthur Hill and the movie with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. But Savage is impressed by his cast and their hard work since rehearsals started more than five weeks ago. Ajax resident Shari Thorne-Kow- alski, who’s appeared with OLT be- fore, plays Martha. George is played by Robert Calvert, of Whitby, mak- ing his debut with OLT although he’s appeared in community and dinner theatre throughout Ontario. Lincoln Trudeau, an OLT regular in the last few years, plays Nick. Honey is played by Jeannette Goguen, of Oshawa, a newcomer to community theatre after studying at Humber College and Second City. “I put a lot of weight on her shoul- ders,” Savage said of Goguen’s role. ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ opened March 9 and runs for three consecutive weekends at the the- atre, Russett Avenue, in north Os- hawa. Eight bands ready for warz Durham crown handed out March 25 DURHAM — The lineup for the finals of Bandwarz 2006 is set. The March 25 event will fea- ture eight local bands competing for recording time, cash and other prizes at Le Skratch Billiard Bar and Grill in downtown Oshawa. The winners of six weeks of playoffs to compete are Robin Dekradel, Hello Beautiful, Lower Back Ta tti, Live Wire, Kessel Run and Suburban Sunrise, chosen by judges. They will be joined by the judges’ wildcard selections, Suckershot and Split Through My Skies, which outscored the rest of the competitors in stage presence, musicianship and originality. “Bandwarz is a great opportuni- ty for exposure,” comments Patrick Pidek of Robin Dekradel, a rock trio consisting of Pidek and two of his female guitar students, Hanna Paterson and Jessie Henshaw, both 13. “The purpose of our band is to introduce to my students what the music business is really like.” At the final, each band will per- form in front of a judging panel consisting of a variety of industry professionals, including repre- sentatives from Canadian record labels, the media and fellow musi- cians. The finals will also be broadcast on Rogers Television. The public is welcome to become part of the studio audience and cheer on the bands. Tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance at Alcatraz Skate and Snow in Oshawa or $12 at the door on the day of the show. Doors for the all-ages event at Le Skratch, 200 John St. West in the Midtown Mall, open at 4:00 p.m. For more information on Band- warz, produced by Eclipse Con- certs, visit www.eclipseconcerts. com. durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 22 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, March 10, 2006 SPORTS sportsdurhamregion.com THIS WEEKEND To r onto Argonauts’ Bashir Levingston and Tony Miles will appear and sign autographs at the Pickering Town Centre’s Centre Court area on Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. Andrew Norman/ News Advertiser photo Jevon to the rack AJAX — Jevon Jacobs of the Cadarackque Public School Cougars shoots over a Westney Heights PS Wildcat during the Durham Elementary Athletic Association (DEAA) regional intermediate boys’ basketball championship. By Jim Easson Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — Two Annandale teams hope home ice will be an advantage this weekend. The Ajax-based Annandale Curl- ing Club has two teams competing in separate regional playdowns on home ice. In the OCA Bantam Mixed Re- gional event, the foursome of Lesley Pyne, Wesley Forget, Stacey Hogan and Emmett Murphy, with coach Jennifer McGhee, competes. In the Junior Mixed Regional, Annandale has the team of Patrick Janssen, third Tracy O’Leary, second Tyler Anderson and lead Ren James, with coach Susannah Moylan, set to play. In each of these regionals, eight teams play in a double-knockout draw for one of two spots in the Provincial championships at the Oakville Curling Club from April 14 to 18. ••• An Annandale rink was at the top of its game at the OCA Mixed Zone playdowns in Whitby Feb. 25 to 27. The team skipped by Jason March, with Susan Kovacs at third, Blair Metrakos at second, and Cindy McKnight at lead, won the ‘B’ side of the draw. The foursome advances to the regionals in Leaside March 11 and 12. Wa rren Leslie and Dave Hutchi- son curled for the Port Perry Club in the event, with Kelly Evans at third and Karen Mundinger at lead. They were sidelined after posting a 2-2 mark and losing in the ‘B’ semi- final. ••• The Annandale team of Susan- nah Moylan, Carol Wilson, Lois Dwyer, and Kristine Miyashiro was sidelined after two games at the Best Western Intermediate Wom- en’s regionals in Bobcaygeon last weekend. Eight teams from four zones competed in the double- knockout event. Two winners from regionals go to the provincial championship in Stirling from March 15 to 18. The Moylan rink won the zone event in January to advance to re- gionals. ••• The Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School girls’ curl- ing team captured the Lake On- tario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) championship at the Bea- verton Curling Club recently. The DO’C team was skipped by Tracy O’Leary, with third Stacey Hogan, second Jessica Cane and lead Courtney Rzepka. The DO’C girls advance for the second consecutive year to the On- tario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) champion- ships. This year, they’re hosted in Ottawa from March 22 to 25. The LOSSA mixed curling crown also went to DO’C. The mixed play- downs were held at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club recently. Tracy O’Leary skipped the DO’C entry with third Sandy Martin, sec- ond Stacey Hogan and lead James McPherson. They now advance to the Oshawa Curling Club for the mixed OFSAA event March 28 to 30. ••• Pickering’s resident curling Olympian Richard Hart, vice on the Glenn Howard team that also in- cludes Brent Laing and Craig Savill, represents Ontario in the Canadian Championship Tim Hortons Brier in Regina, starting March 11. Annandale bantams, juniors stay home for regionals Pickering High drives past top-seeded Henry Carr at OFSAA By Al Rivett Sports Editor AJAX — Bronze was bittersweet for the Pickering High School Tro- jans, which had sought -- and ex- pected -- gold to be their precious medal at the provincial basketball championships. After losing in the Ontario Feder- ation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) ‘AAAA’ senior boys’ semifi- nal to the eventual gold medallists from Mother Teresa Titans of Scar- borough 54-47 on Wednesday after- noon, the second-seeded Trojans suited up for the consolation prize, the bronze, against the top-ranked Henry Carr Crusaders from Toronto. The Trojans responded with a 53-49 victory Wednesday night. Pickering High head coach Ron Parfitt says his charges, still reeling from their semifinal loss, sucked it up and put it all together in order to capture the school’s first-ever OFSAA basketball medal. “Neither team was emotionally ready at the start. But, a few minutes into it, the teams picked it up and played the game the way it should be played. We showed our inten- sity,” noted Parfitt. A quick start helped propel the Trojans to victory, outscoring Henry Carr 14-9 in the first quarter. Pickering High led 31-25 at halftime and held its six-point advantage through the third (46-40). Devoe Joseph led the Trojans’ scoring for a fifth time at OFSAA with 16 points. Tim Cozier had 10. But, make no mistake, losing out on a chance to play for gold hurt his team deeply. “All our kids thought we were the best team there. They thought we should win and when we didn’t win the semifinal, they were really down.” There was more than met the eye, however, in regards to the Trojans’ semifinal loss to Moth- er Teresa. The Trojans came into the pivotal contest after getting little sleep, he said, owing to a leak in the Wil- frid Laurier University gymnasium just prior to their quarter-final tilt against the St. Mary’s Crusaders of Hamilton on Tuesday night. The game, which was to start at 8:45 p.m., was moved to the University of Waterloo and delayed until 10:45 p.m. The game didn’t end until after midnight. Following their 68-47 quarter- final victory over St. Mary’s, the Tro- jans left the facility at 12:30 a.m. and, after eating, didn’t arrive back to their hotel rooms until 2 a.m. The players were allowed to sleep well into the morning and, after a hasty in-room breakfast and hotel check out, didn’t get to the gym until 20 minutes before game time. “I thought it was better for them to sleep as long as they possibly could than get to the gym quickly... When I woke them up they were very tired,” says Parfitt. Although Parfitt is loathe to use the disruption of the previous day as an excuse for the semifinal loss, it didn’t help the team’s chances either. “I’m sure that it had some ef- fect. All these factors sound like an excuse, but I think they were fac- tors,” says Parfitt, adding top-scoring guard Joseph was suffering from a cold and the lack of sleep only wors- ened his condition. Par fitt says organizers were upset with the circumstances surround- ing the quarter-final game. “The people there were very good about it. They were very upset that this had to happen. Maybe I should have asked to delay the semifinal game for an hour or two,” he says. While being one of the upper- echelon squads in high school bas- ketball in Ontario this year is an ample accomplishment, Parfitt ac- knowledged OFSAA gold was the one and only goal of his team. “To be one of the top teams in the province you have to be very good and put in a lot of time. But, these kids thought they were the best and they were going there to win,” says Parfitt. “Last year, we lost in overtime in the quarter-finals and it was like ‘this year, we played well, but we’re coming back next year and next year is going to be our year’. From that point of view, it’s even tougher for us.” Tr ojans bronzed "OYS@!!!! #HAMPIONSHIP Fu el yo ur body. Fuel your mind. MOSSMAN, JOHN In loving memory of a cherished Husband, Father, Father-in-law and Grandfather who died March 9, 2005. If remembering brings you closer then you never went away, for thoughts of you are with us each and every day. There will always be heartache and often silent tears, but always precious memories of days when you were here. If we could have one lifetime wish, one dream that could come true, we'd pray to God for yesterday and you. We hold you close within our hearts and there you will remain, to walk with us throughout our lives until we meet again. Please keep your arms around him Lord and give him special care. Make up for all he suffered that seemed to us unfair. Love Always, Pat, Jackie, Chris, Bethany and Cody. In loving memory of a dear husband father, grandfather MICHAEL H. HICKLING who passed away March 10, 1991 Our hearts still ache in sadness Our secret tears still flow Only those who have lost can tell Of the grief we bear in silence For the one we loved so well Loving and missing you always Mike wife Madeleine, Michael and Lorraine (Jared and Jacob) Angela and Shannon. &&Come && Worship To advertise your church in our regular Worship section on Fridays call Janice at 905-683-0707 or fax 905-579-4218.
