Ajax-Pickering MP Mark Hol- land’s private member’s bill to lower the federal voting age from 18 to 16 went to debate for the first time Tuesday. It was already being champi- oned by a member from each party and now has been jointly seconded by 20 MPs represent- ing all parties — the maximum allowed under House of Com- mons rules. “It went exceptionally well,” Mr. Holland said of the debate. “We have officially 20 second- ers, which is somewhat unprec- edented, apparently that doesn’t happen very often.” By mid-afternoon Jan. 31, the number of MPs wishing to sec- ond the bill had exceeded the limit and some requests were refused by House of Commons administration. Mr. Holland introduced the bill in November. He says young people can drive at 16, join the armed forces at 17, and vote for the leader of a political party at 14, so they should be allowed to vote in a federal election. Those championing the bill also hope that since youth might be voting for the first time when they are still in high school (where elections and current events tend to be discussed), they will be more likely to vote and carry those positive voting habits throughout life, thereby increasing voter turnout. Mr. Holland still has some TINGLING ALL OVER Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Dunbarton High School’s Shane Tingling drives to the net while being closely guarded by Pick- ering High School’s Lyndon Rainford during opening-round play at the fourth annual News Advertiser-St. Mary Classic senior boys’ basketball tournament. In a 26-page ruling released Tuesday, Superior Court of Jus- tice Judge Lee Ferrier stated Chaitanya Kalevar “has persis- tently and without reasonable grounds instituted vexatious proceedings in this court and conducted proceedings in this court in a vexatious manner.” The judge also stated Mr. Ka- levar can’t institute any further court proceedings “in any court” without prior judicial approval and “all proceedings previously instituted by Chaitanya K. Ka- levar are stayed and not to be continued.” That includes a Small Claims Court case that was to be heard today, Feb. 4, in Whitby. “That is, in legal terms, quite a ruling,” said Glenn Bradbury, Mr. McTe ague’s executive assistant. “If you run it by any lawyer, they will say pretty much the same thing. Most would sum it up as McTeague accuser ‘vexatious,’ case dismissed ✦ See Pickering, Page 2✦ See Momentum, Page 5 saying it’s quite a home run in so far as our case was entirely accept- ed by the Superior Court Justice.” Mr. McTeague, through his law- yer John Cannings, went to court on Jan. 20 to have Mr. Kalevar de- clared a vexatious litigant. “He’s lost on all counts, every single count,” Mr. Bradbury stated. “The issue of him being deemed a vexatious litigant, he’s lost. He’s been deemed that. He has to go and get prior approval from a Su- perior Court Justice before he can proceed.” Mr. Kalevar has been seeking to have Mr. McTeague removed, claiming the MP won the Liberal Party nomination for the then On- tario Riding in 1992 by stating he had a master’s degree of econom- ics. When it came to light in 1997 that Mr. McTeague didn’t have a master’s, he said it was a mistake and apologized. Mr. Kalevar said he would have won the nomination without Mr. McTeague’s claim. “It’s another headache they have created for me,” he said. “I will dig out of this hole. I will appeal it. It’s the only thing I can do.” He added, “I don’t see any rea- son the case against McTeague shouldn’t go ahead. They’re trying to bury me. Now the case against McTe ague won’t proceed. “I’m flabbergasted. What they’ve done is put all the small fish in front of the big fish, to hide the big fish,” he said. In his ruling, Justice Ferrier stated Mr. Kalevar hasn’t “demon- strated that the misstatement has given rise to any form of cause of action nor has he demonstrated any damages arising from the mis- statement. “There is no legal remedy which can give Kalevar the relief that he seeks which is ultimately to re- move McTeague from Parliament because of the misstatement.” The judge also ruled Mr. Mc- Te ague can seek legal costs against Mr. Kalevar. Mr. Bradbury stated, “We are definitely going forward with cost application in the case before Jus- tice Ferrier. We have instructed our lawyer to put forward an ap- plication for costs.” He wouldn’t say how much they would seek, but added it could be “s everal thousand dollars. We may get it, we may not. It depends on the court.” A/P PAGE 2 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, FEBRUARY 4, 2005 durhamregion.com Sold As Sets Only HIGHWAY #2TOWNLINEDON CHERRY'S PRICECHOPPERHARWOOD AVE.SALEM RD.KINGSTON RD. Durham Regional Police officers responded to a ramp at Salem Road to find the woman standing there shortly after her call around mid- night last Sunday. The man drove up in his car a short time later, po- lice said. Police say the couple — he’s an Oakville resident, while she’s from Mississauga — became embroiled in an argument after the man was late picking her up. As the disagree- ment escalated, the woman called police and said she was being held in the car. The 21-year-old faces a charge of forcible confinement. He was also charged with mischief for allegedly throwing the woman’s cellphone out the window of his car. Highway call in Ajax leads to charges By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM — The Province is shutting down the local health council, 30 years after it became the local voice in health-care plan- ning. The Durham Haliburton Kawartha and Pine Ridge District Health Council (DHKPR DHC), based out of Peterborough, is one of 16 local organizations to be shut down March 31. The DHCs provide local health-care planning and advice to the Province. The move comes as the Province moves to- ward a more “patient-focused, results-driven, integrated and sustainable” health-care sys- tem, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care website said. The DHCs will be replaced with 14 Local Health Integration Networks (LINs) across Ontario, the Province says. Durham will be part of a huge LIN called Central East, which encompasses parts of Toronto, York Region, Northumberland and Kawartha Lakes. The closure of the local DHC will leave 12 staff members without jobs, but they are re- ceiving severance packages, said Lynda Hes- sey, executive director of the DHKPR DHC. “Obviously there is job loss,” she said. “(But) our staff have really good skills in terms of health system planning at the local level. I think we’ll likely find posi- tions elsewhere as they become available.” Ms. Hessey said the council backs the LINs. “The council is sup- portive of the minister’s goal of a more integrat- ed system that is more people-oriented,” she said. “We certainly hope the LINs will build on the work of the local health council.” Ms. Hessey pointed to several data-packed studies the council has done, including long- term care, dialysis and soon-to-be-released studies on acute care and service. The DHCs have always served as an advi- sory board, but have never had the power to direct funding, said Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham Region’s medical officer of health. The LINs are also supposed to bridge that gap, as well as dealing with mental health, long-term care and hospitals. The new networks are supposed to be up and running by April 2005, the Ministry said. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, FEBRUARY 4, 2005 PAGE 3 P pickeringtowncentre.com Sunday, February 6th from 12noon-4pm Pickering Town Centre - Centre Court 10th Annual Tavia, Laura & Shevon from Bayview Heights Grand Finale WALLPAPER CENTRE 1652 Bayly St. W. Whitevale residents can devour pancake supper on Tuesday By Joshua May Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — Students at Alexander Graham Bell Public School are quarterbacking an anti-smok- ing movement. In a recent presentation, Teens Tackling To- bacco, select students in the Grade 7 and 8 classes demonstrated the hazardous effects of smoking on, not only the individual, but the surrounding elements as well. “These presentations highlight the detrimen- tal effects of smoking and the illnesses associ- ated with this nasty habit,“ said Richard Kolum- bus, special education resource teacher at the school. “Youths are very impressionable at this point in their lives. If we can encourage at least one kid to not smoke (through these demon- strations) then we’ve done our job.” Hoping the consequences of smoking will be better conveyed through their peers, the school has entrusted eight intermediate volunteer stu- dents to deliver the message to their fellow pupils, says Mr. Kolumbus. With an assortment of activities, including smoke-infected pig lungs and anti-smoking visual cues for the students to inspect, the event surely fired home the mes- sage that smoking can lead to death. “This is a very valuable and important tradi- tion that we must continue to uphold,” said Claire Kerr, from the Durham Region health department. “Many young people get hooked (on smoking) at a young age. Through these presentations we want to convey the message that there are absolutely no positive effects to smoking.” All together, more than 250 students from the public school examined their peer’s exhibits. With interactive displays and a student-pro- duced hazardous smoking video, the anti-smok- ing message astounded some of the youths attending. The bill needs the support of 154 of Parlia- ment’s 307 members. The next step for the campaign is a cross- Canada tour at the end of the month where Mr. Holland, along with Conservative MP Be- linda Stronach, Bloc Quebecois MP Stephane Bergeron and NDP MP Nathan Cullen, is going to talk to young people. “The big push right now is going into schools and universities to talk to as many youth as we collectively can,” Mr. Holland said. The youth wings of all the national parties are also involved. However, opposition to the proposal does exist. “There’s some [MPs] that are concerned [16- year-olds] are not mature enough (to vote),” he explained. He said the Quebec caucus has expressed concern that young people “are too radical”, specifically in their ideas on Quebec separa- tion. “It’s not really an argu- ment about whether they should have the right to vote, but whether it would help win seats,” Mr. Hol- land said. “I don’t think that’s a good reason to not allow youth to vote.” The bill should return for a second hour of debate at the end of March, after which it will automatically come to a vote under the new rules for private members’ bills. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, FEBRUARY 4, 2005 PAGE 5 P Pickering Home & Leisure Centre 905-426-9007 Pickering Parkway 401Brock Rd.Shoes • Fashion, Accessories and more for the whole family! 50% everything* OFF *excludes leather jackets Leather Jackets LIFE DOESN’T ALWAYS WAIT UNTIL PAYDAY! When it comes to our politicians, however, we’ll take ’em with a firm, limited, best before date. Durham Region councillors recently debated whether to ask the Province to extend municipal council terms to four years, which would add an extra 12 months to their current term of office, and 18 of the 27 councillors supported it, with Pickering’s four representatives in favour. The discussion stemmed from the Municipality of Claring- ton, which along with the Region is asking all municipalities to recommend the change. The idea is expected to come before Pickering council Feb. 14 for similar support. The arguments from the pro side are that three years is an awful short period of time, relatively speaking, for the impor- tant responsibilities of holding public office. In addition, the feeling is that the job requirements are continuing to grow for municipal politicians, meaning there is a greater and longer learning curve. Finally, the move to longer terms would effec- tively put more coins in a municipality’s bank. Without having to pay the cost of running an election or committing staff time every three years, the Region and Pickering would be further ahead financially in the long run. But what all those arguments fail to consider is that longer terms would in fact reduce the accountability of the elected officials with the most impact on our day-to-day lives. Munici- pal politicians ultimately arrange to have our streets plowed, keep our water running, collect our garbage, build our road- ways, construct new recreation facilities, decide where dogs can run free — the list goes on and on. There isn’t much we do that isn’t directly or indirectly impacted by their decisions. As such, allowing residents to have a definitive say on the job being done is a must. Plenty can be accomplished in three years, and residents can take plenty of stock in their elected representatives’ on-the-job performance during that time. Democracy demands elections be held in a timely fashion, and at the municipal level, the current three-year model is serving residents best. Give us reliability in a car, a friend, or a pet. But give us accountability with our politicians. Regional transit offers lesson to learn from To the editor: Re: Regional transportation. Hopefully citizens are aware that this is the same issue that was presented previously to regional councillors without any business plan relating to this venture last year. At the time the majority of regional council was all for going ahead there and then. Thankfully calmer heads prevailed and insisted on doing things the correct and businesslike way. Now that all the facts and figures are in, some of the previ- ous supporters, suddenly realizing that they were not going to get something for nothing, have changed their minds. Let’s hope the next time the issue of an elected chairman comes up they show the same willingness to revisit their decision and do what the electorate wants: that being to make the regional chairman’s job open to anyone and not a reserved seat. Incidentally, those calmer heads I mentioned were led by Mayor Steve Parish and councillors Scott Crawford and Col- leen Jordan — all of course from Ajax, who as usual were on the vanguard of sensibility. We should congratulate ourselves for choosing these smart politicians to protect the interests of Ajax at the regional level — it was obviously the right one. I ts time has finally come. Earlier this week the federal Liber- als introduced one of the most con- troversial pieces of legislation in years to the House of Commons: legislation to legalize same-sex marriage. The debate has been ongoing for months (or is it years?) with some politi- cians talking about preserving the tradi- tional definition of marriage or having civil unions to recognize committed re- lationships, while others talk about pro- tecting the Charter of Rights and Free- doms and equal rights. Not all politicians share the same opinion, but what they do share is the way they present it. They use abstract ideas and big words, almost removing people entirely from the discussion. One of the few times I heard otherwise was a few weeks ago at one of Ajax- Pickering MP Mark Holland’s town hall meetings. The airport was the dominate issue of the evening, however a lone resi- dent came to find out her MP’s position on the issue of same-sex marriage. Mr. Holland started his response by talking about equality and protecting the Charter, sounding very much like a poli- tician. (For anyone who doesn’t know, Mr. Holland supports the legislation). But then for a moment he put the rhetoric aside and spoke like a regular person. He shared that one of his aunts was gay and that he didn’t understand how allowing her to marry her partner of many years would hurt his three young children or take away from his own mar- riage. As someone who agrees with Mr. Hol- land’s position, I was both glad to hear an MP speak from the heart and sad that I didn’t live in his riding. My member of Parliament supports the ‘traditional definition of marriage,’ which he says his constituents want. Judging from the comments made fol- lowing Mr. Holland’s remarks, it is what many of his constituents want as well. One man said he wouldn’t be re-elected if he supported the legislation and de- spite this, Mr. Holland stood firm. “That is a hill that I am willing to die on,” he said. Like extending the vote to women or equal rights to blacks, this is not an issue of majority rule, but rather one of equal- ity and human rights. It took strong outspoken people to change those injustices. If anyone were to suggest taking those away now, the vast majority of people would scream discrimination. In time, I hope the same happens when people talk about same-sex cou- ples not being allowed to marry. Then today’s outspoken advocates and fair- minded politicians will get the credit they deserve. Durham Regional Police responded to a robbery at a 7-11 store on Rossland Road West around 1:15 a.m. Monday. The lone clerk told police that three masked men, two armed with knives and one carrying a baseball bat, burst into the store and took cigarettes and cash before fleeing to a waiting ve- hicle. Their escape was hampered when the getaway vehicle was involved in an accident not far from the store, police said. The suspects scattered, but two were quickly apprehended. A police dog and handler tracked down the remaining two suspects hiding in a backyard nearby. One of the suspects received minor bite wounds, police said. Police have charged four youths, ranging in age from 14 to 17, in con- nection with the robbery. The suspects cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Awadalla Dr. Boutros Dr. Mark Awadalla Dr. Tannis Dr. Bordeianu (Female) Dr. Luk (Female) By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer DURHAM — Durham Regional Police Staff Sergeant Alan Mack knows how a lot of people feel about the service helicopter Air 1. He gets the phone calls. And e-mails. And other various com- plaints. But Staff Sgt. Mack also knows that when the complainants find out just what it was the helicopter was doing in the middle of the night, they often wind up grateful that cops were buzzing the neighbourhood. “Each time I contacted the ho- meowner and explained what the circumstances were, it was, ‘Thank you very much,’” Staff Sgt. Mack said during an interview at 17 Division headquarters in Oshawa. “When people see that helicopter in orbit, it’s on a call,” he said. “They don’t train in the air.” The wide variety of calls the he- licopter crew responds to increases Air 1’s visibility, Staff Sgt. Mack said. Before the end of December, the he- licopter had been involved in more than 1,400 calls, ranging from miss- ing persons to car pursuits, break and enters and bank robberies. Some of the calls, which can be generated by citizen complaints, defy any clear definition. One such call came in around 2 o’clock one recent morning, when a resident in the area of King Street and Thornton Road in west Oshawa reported a disturbance. “Turns out it was three guys in the cemetery with a bonfire,” Staff Sgt. Mack said. “O ne of them was a federal pa- rolee.” Needless to say, drinking around a raging bonfire in a graveyard in the middle of the night was not permit- ted by the man’s parole terms. Air 1’s crew of police officers and a civilian pilot are ready to take to the air from the Oshawa airport around the clock. When a call comes in, they can be airborne within min- utes. The program began on a trial basis with Durham and York cops sharing a helicopter in 1999. Since then, both police services have seen the merits of the program and pur- chased their own helicopters. Durham’s program now runs on an average budget of around $700,000 a year, most of that is ac- counted for by salaries. The program has proven its value over and again by helping Durham police make ar- rests, avoid dangerous chases and shorten response times, Staff Sgt. Mack said. “(Air 1) made 127 criminal arrests and an additional 144 assisted ar- rests, which means they were there to help track the (suspects),” Staff- Sgt. Mack said. Durham p olice helicopter calls top 1,400 in 2004 High schoolers eye UOIT for fall studies By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM — The region’s university con- tinues to be a popular choice for students moving on to post-secondary studies. The Ontario Universities’ Application Centre recently released preliminary num- bers showing how many high school stu- dents have applied to the province’s univer- sities and where they want to go. The num- ber of applications is down at virtually every university in Ontario, 6.5-per cent lower provincewide than January 2004. But the University of Ontario Institute of Te chnology (UOIT) is in a growth mode. The university, which opened in 2003, is the first, second or third choice of 2,276 high school- ers, up 34 per cent from last year. No other university comes close to that growth rate. Almost 4,400 students in all are thinking of going to UOIT this fall, about 600 more than in early 2004. “Obviously we’re just really pleased,” says Richard Levin, vice-president of strategic enrolment management. “It’s a demonstra- tion of confidence in what we’re building here. Every year there’s more word of mouth and people go back to their (former) schools and talk about their experiences. They must be good experiences.” While a breakdown on where the appli- cants live isn’t ready yet, he expects sixty per cent hail from outside of Durham, while 40 per cent live in the region. In order, Mr. Levin says most of this year’s applicants are from Toronto, Durham, York, Peel and Hal- ton regions and Hamilton-Wentworth. Looking farther afield, roughly 20 interna- tional students began classes in January, for a total of 90 now studying at UOIT. Mr. Levin notes that the university “ex- panded programs quite a bit this (past) fall.” Several new programs, including business and information technology and automo- tive engineering, are attracting interest from applicants, while existing ones like justice studies and mechanical engineering remain “very strong.” Mr. Levin says UOIT’s popularity reflects the need for a university in Durham. “I also think there’s a lot of interest in the whole notion of a technology university,” he says. About 1,850 students currently attend UOIT, and Mr. Levin says 20 per cent of ap- plicants generally end up starting classes in September. Provincewide, 72,968 high school students applied for full-time university studies this fall, filing 325,803 applications. At this time last year, 71,222 students had sent in 348,500 applications. Arts programs continue to be students’ first choice, accounting for 24,862 applications, followed by science (13,335), business administration (10,844) and engi- neering (5,240). durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, FEBRUARY 4, 2005 PAGE 9 A/P Dolphin Pools and Spas • 883 Mulock Dr. • Unit#1 • Newmarket 905-953-SWIM (7946) www.dolphinpools.net Ajax • 65 Kingston Rd. • 905-686-6420 Scarborough • 4191 Kingston Rd. • 416-281-4888 Relax with Your Honey for Valentines Day FLOOR MODEL FLOOR MODEL FLOOR MODELFLOOR MODEL FLOOR MODEL FLOOR MODEL FLOOR MODEL FLOOR MODELFLOOR MODEL FLOOR MODEL spas from or $76* a month O.A.C. $4695$4695$4695$4695$4695 * Amortized over 84 months @ 9.25% O.A.C. Monday to Wednesday 10-6 Thursday, Friday 10-8 Saturday 10-6 Sunday 11-5 Paula, Sales New programs, partnerships help find homes DURHAM — For the third straight year, Pickering-Ajax- Whitby Animal Services was successful in finding a home for every adoptable pet taken in last year. Of the 254 dogs and 355 cats impounded at the Whit- by shelter in 2004, none were euthanised because PAW was unsuccessful in finding them homes, said Don McKay, corporate services director for the Town of Whitby. In 2004, a total of 14 dogs and 169 cats were euthanised by PAW, but only due to ill- ness, injury, temperament or age. Twenty-nine dogs and 89 cats were adopted last year, compared to 56 dogs and 74 cats in 2003. Five “an- imals at large” charges were also laid in 2004, down from nine the previous year. “PAW can boast that for the third successive year no adoptable pets had to be euthanised,” Mr. McKay said. “With the assistance of the general public and the local animal rescue organi- zations, PAW was successful in finding a home for every adoptable pet taken in at the Animal Services Centre in 2004.” Mr. McKay said the adop- tion success of PAW is in no small measure attributable to a number of initiatives re- cently introduced by PAW’s animal control committee, such as promotion and de- velopment of a responsible pet ownership program and the goal to adopt out as many homeless animals as possible. The development of an animal services website, ad- vertising program, new rela- tionships with rescue groups across the region and the establishment of a pet foster program have also increased the chances that animals that come into the centre find good homes, he added. “These initiatives have re- sulted in PAW achieving a no-kills status the last three years,” Mr. McKay said. At least one local coun- cillor who sat on the PAW committee, Pickering’s Bill McLean, expressed outrage in 2000 at the number of ani- mals euthanised at the cen- tre that year — more than 60 per cent. He previously said the organization has become “more compassionate,” par- ticularly in doing away with an old policy of euthanising animals should they not be claimed within five days. OPG keeping with schedule, budget By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer PICKERING — Refurbish- ing work on a reactor at the Pickering nuclear station re- mains on target to begin pro- ducing electricity in the fall. Richard Dicerni, acting president and chief execu- tive officer for Ontario Power Generation, said recently that construction work should be done by the middle of 2005, followed by three months of commissioning and testing work. “We’re still targeting June or early July” to remove Unit 1 from the guaranteed shut- down state and start to power up the reactor, he stated fol- lowing a media tour of the mammoth facility. Commissioning would fol- low, with the unit back in service in September or Oc- tober, he added. In November, the compa- ny released its latest sched- ule and budget estimate for the project. At that time, OPG officials said the unit would be back in service by this coming fall, with an esti- mated price tag approaching $1 billion. Mr. Dicerni said the company is continuing to adhere to those time and money estimates. “There hasn’t been any discovery work to adjust the schedule we put out,” Mr. Dicerni stated, adding, “This is a complex project. “There are no gimme putts here.” Bill Robinson, senior vice- president in charge of the Pickering ‘A’ restart, said if the company hadn’t reached a target in January, it wouldn’t have been able to complete the project on time. The target is to have at least three-quarters of the work done by March, Mr. Robinson added. “We’re pleased with the progress over the last few months. We’ve demonstrated in the last few months we can manage this project and get the work done. We’re hold- ing to the date we put out in November,” he noted. “From the standpoint of major surprises, no we haven’t had any. We’re mon- itoring the work very closely. We recognize things had gone wrong with Unit 4.” Monitoring is being done to “make sure the same is- sues aren’t cropping up,” Mr. Robinson added. With Unit 4, the process was to have the work done and then have it monitored. Mr. Dicerni characterized the work as “these aren’t low-hanging fruit. It requires management and oversight.” The restart means a “lot of pieces have to come togeth- er. Monitoring Unit 1 will be helpful to prepare the busi- ness case (for Units 2 and 3) pros and cons.” New systems and parts in different areas of the plant still have to be integrated. OPG is also keeping with a budget of between $950 mil- lion and $975 million for Unit 1. “Whatever we said, we’re tracking to that number.” durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, FEBRUARY 4, 2005 PAGE 19 A/P 4 Page Flyer in LOOK FOR * delivered to select homes Today’s Paper! save up to 75% OFF VALENTINE’S DAY HELIUM FILLED BALLOONS ONLY 99¢ and UP 4),%4),% *"/ *"// ° / ° SALES / INSTALLATION RESIDENTIAL / COMMERCIAL GRAND OPENINGGRAND OPENING SPECIALSSPECIALS OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK 9:00 am - 7:00 pm Tile Installation from $2.99 sq. ft. The school raised $5,780 as part of the UNICEF Earthquake Challenge. Jamie Romaniuk, Lexie Bird and Paige Budden are Grade 5 class representatives. By Joshua May Special to the News Advertiser DURHAM — The sky is no limit for a Pickering church. On a recent faith retreat to Bogota, Co- lumbia, Brendan Witton, lead pastor for the Church Without Limits in Pickering, spoke in detail of the unique elements exempli- fied by his church and the uncharacteristic youthful following of his congregation. “Young people often get lost in the mix (when it comes to church input),” said Mr. Witton. “However, we do things differently. We encourage new ideas, new concepts and we try to convey the message of God through language that is understandable and current to young people.” Founding pastor of the Church With- out Limits, the 26-year-old designed the concept for the church on the basis of offering a relevant, practical message to young people interested in expanding their faith. A Christian-based belief structure, the church features a weekly congregation of more than 200 members who, on aver- age, range between the ages of 18 and 30. Although many in the congregation are younger, Mr. Witton continues to encour- age members of all faiths and ages to at- tend services. “We do not want to neglect the teach- ings of older generations. All are welcome to visit our church, both young and old,” said Mr. Witton. “Our mission is to serve the creed of God. We want to bring about change and positive influence amongst the community. We’re a church committed to practical answers from the Bible, not just doctrines and theories.” Karla Belfon, a 21-year-old student at Tyndale University College and Seminary in Toronto, knows all too well the soulful healings of the Church Without Limits. After growing up in Scarborough, the Ajax resident recognizes the life-altering ben- efits she has gained since affirming her faith with the church. “I see old friends and acquaintances of mine who are either dead or in jail now. I often think what could have been if I hadn’t strayed from that lifestyle,” said Ms. Belfon. “The (Church Without Limits) saved me. It gave me hope, it gave me strength, and most of all it helped me to find God.” A member of the church since its incep- tion in November 2000, the psychology major is proud to be a part of its vastly youth-oriented congregation. Emphasizing the respect demonstrated and relevance of the sermons to young people, Ms. Belfon is ecstatic over the way the church conveys its message to the public. “This is not your traditional church. Every service is fun, interesting and fam- ily-oriented,” said Ms. Belfon. “I don’t see how other churches can take the most important thing in life, God, and make it boring. Life is so short, it’s important to live for something.” Church Without Limits is in Pickering at 882 Kingston Rd. E. at the St. Paul’s on the Hill Anglican Church. Services are held Saturdays at 5:15 and 8:30 p.m. For more information regarding the church, call 905- 831-5454 or visit www.churchwithoutlim- its.com. Te am Diabetes Canada is once again inviting people from Ontario to jour- ney to Reykjavik, Iceland to walk or run the Fire and Ice Marathon. The marathon is part of Reykjavik’s annual Cultural Night, which showcases the city’s night life, in addition to many artistic and cultural attractions. Reyk- javik is renowned for its countless geo- thermally heated pools and lagoons. The total economic burden of diabe- tes and its chronic complications costs the Canadian health-care system $13.2 billion annually. Team Diabetes raises money for the Canadian Diabetes As- sociation. The marathon takes place along the ocean coast and out into the coun- tryside, showcasing Iceland’s majestic scenery and unspoiled nature. As Diabetes Type 2 can be prevented with a healthy and active lifestyle, join- ing Team Diabetes is a good way to reach that goal. The marathon is Aug. 20, while the deadline for registrations is Feb. 11. Par ticipants come from all age groups and athletic levels and commit to rais- ing a minimum amount for diabetes research, service, advocacy and educa- tion in Canada. In return, the Team Diabetes Canada program provides professional training for walkers and runners, round-trip airfare and accommodations. The full marathon is suitable for run- ners and the half is suitable for walkers and runners. For more information or to register, call Brian Collins 416-408-7148 or 1- 800-BANTING ext. 7148. Pickering, Province help with bidding process Pressure taken off consumer to finish the bottle, Bedwell adds By Joshua May Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — The Province has uncorked a great idea for dining establishments, says a local restaurateur. Under controversial new legislation from the Ontario government, patrons around the province are now privy to a new feature at participating restau- rants: Bring Your Own Wine (BYOW). The idea, borrowed from successful ventures in both Alberta and Quebec, allows patrons the convenience of supplying their own wine for dinner, without feeling obligated to finish the bottle, says Travis Bedwell. “Wine is an expensive commodity,” said the manager at Pennello Bistro in Ajax. “A lot of the time people can- not drink an entire bottle (of wine) throughout their dinner and stay lon- ger to finish what they’ve purchased. When you spend any amount of money at a restaurant, you’re always hoping to get the most for what you paid for. This relieves the pressure.” A policy intended to provide choice to the consumer, the BYOW act allows patrons the ability to bring a bottle of wine to any participating restaurant with the option of having the bottle corked and brought home if not fin- ished. However, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario warns that only LCBO-sanctioned bottles of wine will be accepted at participating res- taurants, with no exceptions made for bottles of the homemade variety. To counteract a potential loss in wine sales to restaurant retailers, the government has allowed participating establishments the ability to charge those bringing in outside bottles a corking fee. However, Mr. Bedwell points out, the cost pales in comparison to the hefty fees charged for some featured wines. “The consumer is saving money here,” said Mr. Bedwell. “This (act) al- lows our clientele the ability to supply their own choice (of wine) for dinner without being limited to the selection of our restaurant, and often, bring in a less expensive bottle without en- countering standard industry mark- up fees.” The Ontario BYOW program largely borrows from the Alberta act, under which five per cent of the Province’s restaurants actively participate. The legislation requires that any restaurant providing its customers this service be fully-licensed by the government. As of earlier this week, of the 17,400 restaurants in Ontario, 48 have ap- plied for a licence. “This (act) is very important to our business,” said Mr. Bedwell. “Liquor and beer sales pale in comparison to the amount of wine purchased here (at Pennello Bistro). We understand our clientele are often looking to try new things. “We’re just hoping they appreciate this gesture on our part.” Established in 1995, Pennello Bistro is an Italian eatery located in Picker- ing Village. Portrait of singer ‘well received’ by family By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer AJAX — Al Slark has put his stamp on the U.S. Postal Service. On Jan. 28, a stamp bear- ing an illustration painted by the Ajax resident was re- leased to the general public across the U.S. The 37-cent stamp of black singer Marian An- derson is one of five works Slark has painted for the American postal service. “A nderson was a great, classically-trained singer. She did opera,” he says. “She couldn’t make it as a singer because of her skin colour. She was a big singer in Europe. She was a great activist and spoke for equality.” He was approached to do the Anderson stamp about a year ago. “My rep was asked about my availability. For a stamp, I’m always available. I get a black-and-white photo of the person. I make a sketch. I had to hire African-Amer- ican models to simulate the skin tone,” Slark says. He also found the tone from the few colour photo- graphs of Anderson. “I take that and come up with a final portrait. I show them the sketch and they say go ahead.” Once he’s finished his work, it’s turned in and a “whole commission and board” review the work. Ul- timately, the subject’s fam- ily has the final say. “From what I hear, it was well re- ceived. I was able to do the lady justice.” U.S. postal officials con- tacted Slark about doing the Anderson portrait. “They saw a page of my work in a book for illustra- tors. They liked my style,” he says. “They called my rep. He called and said I got a stamp in the U.S. “I researched her and thought ‘wow, she would make a great portrait,’” he says, adding the portrait was done in oil. “I wanted to capture the look in her eyes, soft yet determined.” Slark was also commis- sioned to do a portrait of Paul Robeson, another black singer who had to go to Europe. After submitting the por- trait, Robeson’s family in- stead decided to go with a black-and-white photo- graph. He was told he would be asked to do other stamps, but he hasn’t been told when. With stamps, “I usu- ally paint them five to six times larger than they’re used. When it’s shrunk, all the details show up,” Slark notes, adding that making a portrait “eye-catching” is “my objective as the artist.” He works in oil when doing private commissions and portraits. As an illustrator, he also does book covers, such as romance novels, and he’s completed more than 300. He’s earned his living as an illustrator since 1994. He and his wife Josie moved to the area from North York a year ago and “we absolutely love Ajax.” He hasn’t had an oppor- tunity to create a Canadian stamp yet, though. “I’m waiting for the (An- derson) stamp to be re- leased and I’ll show them. I’ll definitely approach them.” He notes in Canada, stamps are often photo- graphs. Ajax and Pickering students record holiday favourites By Mike Ruta Staff Writer AJAX — It’s a little early, or late, to get into the Christ- mas spirit, but there’s a lot of it in some local elemen- tary schools this week. Students are recording seasonal favourites for a CD coming out this fall. Fun 2 Sing is an Ontario-wide music education and work- shop program that touched down at Duffin’s Bay, Frenchman’s Bay and Bay- view Heights public schools, in addition to St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School. Future workshops are slat- ed for St. Francis de Sales and St. Monica Catholic schools. “It went beautifully,” said St. Marguerite teacher Carla Wilson of Tuesday’s session. She runs the junior-inter- mediate choir at the school with Amanda Fera. “We had a great time. We’re definitely putting ourselves on the list for next year,” Ms. Wilson said. Roughly 65 students in Grade 4 to 8 sang ‘Here We Go a Carolling’, ‘The First Noel’ and ‘I Saw Three Ships.’ They also piped up for O Canada, a recording to be used as part of morn- ing announcements at the school. Ms. Wilson says the students meet once a week all year long for practice and were looking forward to the session. “To have something like that really validates all their work,” she says. “This was sort of a perk.” After performing, they listened as recording engi- neer Robert Hanson spoke about his profession and answered student ques- tions. Recording company Folkes Hanson Productions co-ordinates Fun 2 Sing. At Duffin’s Bay, students sang ‘Silent Night’, ‘O Come Emmanuel’ and ‘Pat-A-Pan’. Mary Jane Corradetti, in- termediate music and Grade 8 teacher at the school, says students in the senior choir, roughly 30 in all, were very excited to participate. The students also recorded O Canada on a separate CD so that it can be played during morning announcements. Tr ojans sputter, but still beat Spartans Rainford’s 24 points key to first-round win at St. Mary-News Advertiser tourney By Al Rivett Sports Editor DURHAM — Ly ndon Rainford’s game is rounding into shape nicely after an injury put the Pickering High School Trojans’ starting for- ward on the shelf for an extended period of time. Although he admitted to being somewhat out of shape after a week- long layoff for exams, Rainford was the Trojans’ leading man on the boards and on the scoresheet in a 78-66 win over the Dunbarton High School Spartans in preliminary action at the fourth annual News Advertiser-St. Mary Classic senior boys’ basketball tournament. The hoops battle between the Ajax and Pickering schools was one of eight games in the 16-team tour- nament played at St. Mary Thurs- day. Action continues today (Fri- day), culminating in the champion- ship game on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. Scoring 24 points and generally giving the Spartans fits in the paint, Rainford says he’s happy to be back playing at a high level and fully recu- perated from a broken wrist that oc- curred in only the Trojans’ second tournament game of the season. He recalls going up for a layup in a game against Toronto’s Henry Carr. An opposing player undercut him at the legs, causing him to land awkwardly on his wrist. Moreover, he’s convinced the play was flagrant — in a word, dirty. “I felt that way,” says the six-foot- two-inch, 180-pound forward of the incident. Although he still has bouts of pain, especially in the morning, Rainford proclaims himself fully recovered and has been a solid contributor in the Trojans’ 7-0 undefeated record in Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) league play thus far. As for their chances, Rainford says the Trojans (17-5 overall) “definitely have a shot” to get to the final of the tournament, that also includes top-10 ranked teams from Oakwood Collegiate and Northern Secondary from Toronto. But, in order to give the Trojans a chance at a third title in the four-year history of the tournament, Rainford says he and his teammates will have to shake off the rust that was evident in the first game. The layoff from practice “might disrupt our offence for a bit, but after today’s game, hopefully we’ll be better.” The Trojans play their second- round match against the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Secondary School Knights of Barrie today (Friday) with the result unavailable at press deadline. Although playing well enough to subdue the Spartans, Trojans’ coach Marc Picard was unimpressed with his charges defensive play. “I don’t think we played very well,” says Picard. “Offensively, we could score at will but, defensively, we did a very poor job. Scoring points wasn’t a problem, it was preventing them that was a problem.” As for the Spartans, they too, have been out of the gym for a week, and haven’t played a game in two weeks. Notwithstanding the lack of preparation, rebounding was the team’s biggest downfall, says coach Jeff Maharaj. “If we had rebounded a little bet- ter, we could have won. We were totally out-rebounded this time and the last time we played them,” la- ments Maharaj, whose Spartans were a late addition to the tourna- ment, owing to Toronto’s Vaughan Road Academy Vipers pulling out due to a lack of players. The Spartans frontcourt was also hurting from the absences of cen- tres Andrew Powell and Nashon Hill, who were unavailable for Thursday’s game, says Maharaj. Pickering High led from start to finish, opening up a 15-9 edge be- fore Dunbarton came back to within four points at the buzzer (21-17) on consecutive treys by Shane Tingling and Rayon Segree. The Trojans looked poised to drum the Spartans off the court in the second quarter, going on an 11- 0 run and leading by 14 with 2:54 remaining in the quarter. Dunbar- ton, however, battled back in the late going to cut the deficit to 37-30 at the half. Pickering High increased their advantage to 10 points (58-48) at the end of the third quarter, and contin- ued to pull away on the Spartans in the final quarter. In addition to Rainford, Marcus Wong had 17 points, and Damion Davis 11. Tingling led the Spartans with a 25-point effort. In other action on Thursday, the Va ughan Secondary School Voya- geurs got past Pickering’s Pine Ridge Secondary School Pumas 65- 61. Karl Frederick led the Voyageurs with 31 points, followed by Vlad Kovalevsky, Vaughan’s big six-foot- seven-inch centre, with 15. Ricardo Pearce netted 26 for the Pumas. The Wilfrid Laurier Blue Devils, of Scarborough, downed the G.L. Roberts Lakers of Oshawa 78-69. Marvell Waithe had 26 points for Laurier. Tyson Eteli netted 24 for the Lakers. The St. Joan of Arc Catholic Sec- ondary School Knights of Barrie lowered the boom on Ajax’s Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Cougars 77-34. Sebastian Kasiuk had 24 and J.P. Amaral added 23 for the Knights. Paul Golebiowski had 14 for the Cougars. Host St. Mary posted an 80-68 victory over the Monsignor Percy Johnson Jaguars of Toronto. Duane Howard led the Monarchs with 29 points. Nana Ntim replied with 24 for the Jaguars.
