The Pickering Community Working Group (PCWG), which is opposed to the project, is call- ing on local residents to take part in a letter -writing campaign to express their concerns about the project. "We're encouraging people to write to the minister of the envi- ronment and also to Janet Ecker (MPP for Pickering -Ajax - Uxbridge)," said PCWG mem- ber David Steele, noting about 30 people have submitted letters to date while countless others have signed a petition to stop the pipeline. The PCWG is asking resi- dents to compose their own let- ters outlining their concerns with the project, the environmental assessment process that's been .followed and the route that's been selected, Mr. Steele ex- plained. He reported one of the main concerns of the PCWG is the fact the City of Pickering was not consulted by the Region of York when that municipality was es- tablishing the terms of reference for the environmental assess- ment. Other concerns include the traffic impact on Whites Road during the construction period, the dust, noise and vibration im- pacts on local houses and busi- nesses, the safety of neighbour- hood children who walk to school, York's plan to use park- land in Petticoat Creek for a raw water pumping station ,and the concern that the pipeline could be used to provide servicing ca- pacity for developing an airport in north Pickering or to support housing on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Letters can be mailed to Dan Newman, minister of the envi- ronment, at 135 St. Clair Ave. W., 12th floor, Toronto, Ont., M4V 1P5. Pickering -Ajax - Uxbridge MPP Janet Ecker can be reached at 1550 Kingston Rd., Suite 213, Pickering, Ont., L1V 1C3. Her e-mail address is janet–eckerco@ontla.ola.org. Mr. Steele asks that residents send a copy of any letters mailed to the Province to the PCWG as well. For more information con- tact the PCWG at pcwgroup@home.com or at P.O. That means Thursday was the deadline to remove signs and posters that have been on display throughout Pickering since Oct. 2, the first day they were al- lowed up under the same bylaw. "Usually we would call the Candi= date (if they haven't been removed)," City clerk Bruce Taylor said in an in- terview Wednesday. `By the time (the deadline) comes 98 per cent, of them will be down, they'll be gone" Mr. Taylor reports candidates could face a fine of up to $5,000 if their signs aren't removed. The dramatic tapes of the conver- sation just prior to the shootings were played Wednesday to the jury at the criminal trial of constables Martin, Hoskin and Robins. They begin with the officers knocking on the door of the Romagn- uolo's Sunderland residence on 17th Sideroad in north Durham, followed by a dog barking. Tony Romagnuolo answered the door and reacted with surprise to the presence of four officers. "I want to talk to (son Lorenzo) about threatening last week over the telephone... He threatened to break my legs," Const. Hoskin said. Mr. Romagnuolo questioned why four police officers would come for his son over "a threatening last week. It takes four of you to come here a week later? Why would you wait a week to do this... That don't make sense to me." he told the officers, speaking in a calm manner. Const. Hoskin said he was off-duty for four days and "whether it's proper or not that's for the judge to decide." Mr. Romagnuolo calls Lorenzo out and after a few general questions and Const. Hoskin tells Lorenzo, "Right now I'm investigating you for threat- ening a police officer." Replied Lorenzo, "I have no idea what you're talking about." After Lorenzo once again stated his innocence, the conversation began to degenerate, the tapes show. "I have a good lawyer, do you? How far are you willing to go?" a de- fiant Lorenzo said. "What do you mean?" Const. Hoskin replied. "I have nothing to lose," Lorenzo said. As the physical altercation begins to break out, an unidentifiable male PICKERING VILLAGE HYUNDAI First Anniversary Sale Advertisement which ran in Durham Wheels Nov. 15th should have included: ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM 100 ,000 KM We apologize for any inconvenience caused Pickering village Hyundai or its customers. voice is then heard saying, "Don't fight with them please... Don't do it, don't do it!" The last audible thing heard is an Italian curse. The tape then stops. In his opening address last week, Crown attorney John Corelli said Lorenzo, then 19, reached for the door handle when being arrested by Const. Hoskin, at which time Const. Martin came to assist his partner. During the ensuing skirmish, Tony Romagnuolo jumped into the fray and became embroiled in a struggle with Const. Martin during which he was shot four times. Const. Martin was injured by a bullet grazing his nose. Rocco Romagnuolo, at the time 17, was shot in the stomach by Const. Robins after attempt- ing to remove Const. Martin from his father, the prosecutor told the jury. Const. Martin has pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-de- gree murder in the death of Mr. Romagnuolo. Const. Robins has pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault and discharge of a firearm with intent to wound, while Const. Hoskin has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault with a weapon and careless discharge of a firearm. "You shot my dad and my brother... Oh my God... you had no right to shoot them," a sob- bing Lorenzo tells Const. Hoskin during a conversation inside a police car just after the shoot- ings, also recorded. "I told you what to do in the beginning, to come with me... I'm not the one to shoot them, I'm the guy you were whaling on," said a shaken -sounding Const. Hoskin. THAT IMPACTS PICKERING "I was defending myself and you pulled out your gun," Loren- zo said. "You don't fight police... You went for my gun... You don't grab my gun," replied the officer. Lorenzo pleaded for Const. Hoskin to ask other officers at the scene the condition of his fa- ther and brother. "Is he OK? Ask him for me, please, please," he begged. "No, the officers are not sup- posed to talk to me now." Lorenzo is eventually turned over to another officer and the tape stopped. THE STUDY In July 1997, York Region completed a Master Plan to identify a strategy to meet the future regional water demands. One component of the preferred solution was the provision of a Great Lakes Water Supply. The preferred supply was identified as Lake Ontario via a corridor in the western portion of the Region of Durham (Durham West). Planning for this Lake Ontario water supply via Durham West is being undertaken as an individual Environmental Assessment (EA) in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act (the EA Act). The water supply will be comprised of a raw water intake, raw water pumping station, raw water transmission main, water treatment plant, treated water transmission main and treated water storage reservoir. In 1998, a Terms of Reference was completed for the preparation of the EA in accordance with the EA Act. "They'll have to deal with it in the next eight months," he said. "I assume shortly into the new year we'll be issuing a re- quest for proposal (in an attempt to meet the Region's garbage needs)." The new year will also be marked by what will surely be some hot debate over the issue of financing hospital expansions here. "There's no doubt in my mind it will be part of the budget discussions," Mr. Anderson said. "A lot of councillors heard a lot of things during the cam- paign, pro and con, regarding the hospi- tals... it's an important infrastructure." The issue of governance will also have to be addressed early in the term. "That issue has to be dealt with by June. We have a resolution to say so," Mr. Anderson said. "I would hope Re- gional council comes together on the governance issue, no matter what the so- lution." But, Coun. "Now is not the time to take a hard- line attitude," he said. IT'S 10 O'CLOCK_ DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR WIFE IS? Where else would she be? And that's just fine with local MPP Janet Ecker. It is now unlikely MPP salaries will get any increase. Opposition leader Dalton McGuinty'.s suggestion for a two -per cent hike for 103 MPPs beginning in January, is not an option according to House leader Norm Sterling. The two -per cent proposal was not considered, because it would not be enough to help at- tract young people to politics, said Mr. Sterling. We also are without good public education and political wisdom on how to deal with it. Larraine Years ago, city leaders and industry ex- ecutives should have vigorously promoted and practised the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recy- cle) as if they were battling a third world war, to eliminate or, at least minimize, our waste in anticipation of the day when local landfill sites close. Today it is ironic to view Toronto's 12 - year -old film, `The Sound of the Stream', which describes vast amounts of garbage and how we should cope In some ways we are even further be- hind as visions of the late 1980s have not been implemented due to bureaucratic wheel spinning, apathy, environmental budget cuts, and product marketing im- ages. A recent clip of Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman on television carrying a dispos- able cup was immediately followed by an item on Toronto's garbage problem. It re- minds us that very little has changed in this regard. There are two recent scenarios of outra- geous waste. The first was the individually plastic wrapped exams for every Grade 10 student as part of the Province's new liter- acy testing. Some areas recycle plastic film, but due to its weak markets, many do not. "We've removed all products con- taining PPA, both prescription and non- prescription," said Douglas Brown, pharmacist and owner of Shoppers Drug Mart in north Durham. Health Canada hasn't issued an ac- tual recall but it has released a public advisory requesting consumers not use any products containing phenyl- propanolamme (PPA). Although Health Canada officials say the risk of hemorrhagic stroke as a result of the use of products containing PPA is low, they are recommending consumers not use any of those reme- dies until it can conduct a full assess- ment of PPA. The advisory follows research in the United States that links the use of PPA as a diet supplement and strokes in people under the age of 50, particularly young women. PPA use as a diet sup- plementis not approved in Canada. However, another study in the U.S. also reported an increase risk with the use of cough and cold medications. "We do have PPA in cold remedies like the U.S. and at this point do we re- ally want to take that risk?" asked Roslyn Tremblay, a Health Canada spokesmen. "We're asking people not to use products with PPA use because we don't know who may be at risk:' While most cases involved women, men may also be at risk, says Health Canada. It noted only one case of hem- orrhagic stroke associated with PPA has been reported to the Canadian Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Programme over the past two decades. Here in Durham, most pharmacists say medications containing PPA have already come off the shelf as a "safety - first" precaution. Manufacturers are standing by their products and issuing refunds, they report. In the interest of safety, cold med- ications like Dimetapp and Ornade, are among 60 to 70 items on Shoppers' PPA recall list, says Mr. Brown. "Anyone can bring in those prod- ucts. If they have any concerns they should return them. We are giving re- funds no questions asked;" he says. "Customers should take those products back to the point of purchase." For more information about PPA, contact Health Canada of their Web site at www.hc-sc.gc.ca or by phone at (613) 957-2991. More than 1,000 competitors. Close to 100 volunteers. It all adds up to the 21st annual Provincial Cup, a gathering of the top elementary school volleyball teams from across Ontario. The championship is returning to Durham Region for the next five years, with the 2000 Provincial Cup set for this Friday and Saturday at var- ious schools in Oshawa and Whitby. Durham schools will be looking to continue an impressive string in this year's event. Boys' teams from Durham have won the past four cham- pionships (Meadowcrest, 1999; Glen Dhu, 1998, Meadowcrest, 1997, Dr. Thornton, 1996), while Durham schools have taken the last two girls' titles (Claremont, 1999; William Dun- bar, 1998). "Durham is exceptional in the province," says Phil Ovsenek, one of the event's organizers. "We are the ex- ample of what can happen. The Durham Elementary Athletic Associa- tion is No. 1." The Provincial Cup originated in Barrie in 1980 and was held in that community for five years. It moved to Scarborough for 1985-1989, was held in Durham Region from 1990-1994, moved to Peel Region during 1995- 1999 before returning here, where it will be held until 2004. The tournament has been filled since mid-May and organizers contin- ue to get as many teams from around Ontario as possible, sending out ap- plications to every school board in the province. "We want a truly provincial tour- nament," says Ovsenek, who is orga- nizing the event along with Andy Dy- ment, Rob Dyment and Peter Lahti. "Our team is still to get more teams from certain areas and we'll make that attempt each year." This year's Provincial Cup will be held at 10 schools: Whitby's Ander- son Collegiate, C.E. Broughton, Sin- clair Secondary, Fallingbrook, Leslie McFarlane and Ormiston and Os- hawa's Village Union, McLaughlin Collegiate, Adelaide McLaughlin and Stephen Saywell. Most players in the tourney are aged 13 or 14 and the quality of vol- leyball is outstanding, notes Andy Dyment "It's not hit and giggle anymore, it's not nine people snaking around a court," he says. The net is lowered a foot from Olympic standards, allowing the Grade 7-8 students to showcase their skills, he says. "We play the -game the way it's played at the Olympic level, just with smaller bodies," says Ovsenek. ' Play begins Friday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m: The semifinals and finals are at Anderson Collegiate on Saturday, be- ginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. r*siiWARD • • • •• Tables 4'x 8' as low IL SLATE as Queen Anne $99900 Delivered & Installed + Accessories $249500 ft-AdWARD WAX LCUnON 282 Monarch Ave., Ajax 6 ll 4.0m gA P PAGE 30'NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, November 17, 2000 SCOREBOARD Pickeringselects grab three of fpoints NOV 17, 2000 ONTARIO PROVINCIAL JUNIOR'A' HOCKEY LEAGUE Standings as of Nov. 11/2000 SOUTH CONFERENCE STANDINGS TEAM G W L T OTL F A PTS GAA Markham 24 16 8 0 0 117 86 32 3.58 Wexford 21 14 4 1 2 107 71 31 3.38 Thornhill 21 12 6 1 2 93 71 27 3.38 St. Michael's 23 12 10 1 0 103 99 24 4.30 Oshawa 20 11 8 0 1 77 76 23 3.80 Vaughan 19 9 6 2 2 71 66 22 3.47 Ajax 21 9 10 2 0 77 80 20 3.81 Pickering 18 8 7 2 1 77 73 19 4.06 North_ York 18 1 16 1 0 43 90 3 5.00 SOUTH CONFERENCE SCORING LEADERS As of Nov. 1112000 PLAYERTEAM GP G A PTS PIM Marc Neron Thornhill 16 19 17 36 22 Scott Misfud Thornhill 17 17 19 36 42 Kevin Tompkins Markham23 7 25 32 40 Vince Bellissimo St. Michael's 17 14 17 31 16 Matt Foy Wexford 18 18 13 31 12 Bobby Fitkin Markham 23 11 20 31 11 Jesse Boucher Markham 23 21 9 30 14 Alex Lalonde Ajax 19 17 11 28 50 Tyler McGregor Ajax 19 10 18 28 4 Jeremy Rankine Oshawa 19 14 12 26 47 Gus Katsuras Wexford 18 12 13 25 30 Jesse Arbour Oshawa 18 10 15 25 20 Matt Chrlstle Pickering 17 5 19 24 12 Mac Faulkner Wexford 16 8 15 23 15 R.
