The stations investigated were Ridgeview Gas Bar on Simcoe Street at the ridges in Port Perry, also the site of an earlier fire ruled arson, the OLCO on Hwy. 12 south of Sunderland; and the Shell/Beaver gas station in Pefferlaw in York Region. Police said the probe began Feb. 28 after a man was arrested using fraudulent credit cards to pur- chase computer equipment at Future Shop stores in Whitby and Ajax. Mr. Sanderson pleaded guilty to 90 charges of possession of stolen credit card data, three counts of fraud over $5,000 (relating to the three financial in- stitutions) and single counts of illegally possessing a credit card skimming de- vice and trafficking in credit card data: He also pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud in connection with the Future Shop incidents as well as attempting to obstruct justice by threatening a . wit- ness. Mr. Sanderson did not work at any of the three gas stations, but had close contact with some employees. No details of the case were provided during the arraignment; the facts will be outlined by prosecutor Mark Moorcroft during today's sentencing hearing. According to investigators, credit card skimming or "double -swiping" has become Durham's fastest-growing fraud. A low risk of getting caught and huge profits are especially attractive to organized crime, police say. Using portable machines as small as pagers, criminals can swipe unsuspect- ing customers' credit or debit cards. The data is then used to manufacture coun- terfeit credit cards. The Buffett Taylor National Well- ness Survey Report 2000 - an analysis of the status of worksite wellness and health promotion in Canada - was con- ducted in late 1999 and early 2000 by Buffett Taylor & Associates, a Whitby consulting firm that specializes in work- place wellness programs. A total of 414 medium -to -large- sized companies from across Canada completed the survey from both the public and private sector. . "The good news is a growing num- ber of Canadian employers are begin- ning to recognize the value of healthy employees. The bad news is they lag in execution," says Ed Buffet, president and CEO of Buffett Taylor. "Very few companies in Canada are taking the issue of employee wellness seriously enough to really make a dif- ference. Yet with workplace absen- teeism skyrocketing to more than $12 billion a year in Canada and companies competing in the global economy, there is a real competitive advantage to hav- ing a healthier, and ultimately more pro- ductive workforce," says Mr. Buffett. "Workplaces who offer comprehen- sive wellness programs will be more competitive, with increased productivi- ty, decreased absenteeism, improved morale, lower benefit costs and better employee retention, adds Mr. Buffett. Highlights of the report are: • Only 17.5 per cent of companies surveyed said they offer a comprehen- sive workplace wellness program. • When respondents were asked to identify health risks of concern to their organization, stress was ranked highest (cited by 83 per cent), followed by smoking (57 per cent), `unable to bal- ance work and family' (55 per cent) and `feeling of loss of control over work schedule and environment' (53 per cent). • While only 17.5 per cent offer a comprehensive program, almost two- thirds (64 per cent) offer some kind of wellness activity (e.g. smoking cessa- tion, stress management, ergonomic clinics and others). Among those offer- ing some kind of wellness initiative, the top reasons cited were: 27 per cent con- sider healthy employees a valuable asset; 26 per cent want to promote a healthy lifestyle; 14 per cent want to re- duce absenteeism; 10 per cent said they wanted to contain the cost of benefits; only 3 per cent said it was to improve corporate image. • When asked -to rank reasons that would (or did) prompt their organiza- tion to implement a workplace wellness program the highest -ranked reason was the prospect of healthier and more pro- ductive employees (cited by 55 per cent of all respondents); the -'second top rea- son cited by 17 per cent was improved employee morale; 15 per cent said long- term health-care costs. • Among those who do not offer a comprehensive program, however, the top three main deterrents most frequent- ly cited are related to perceptions about cost and resource issues; 41 per cent said they lacked the budget; 39 per cent lacked staff resources and 32 per cent were concerned over the cost of a pro- gram. NEW.&ADYER-TJSER, FRIDAYF EDITJON# Ober -27s 2000 -PAGE .,7 AIP To pay or not to pay — that's the allowance question Working your way through money, maze a parent's problem BY JANE McDONALD Staff Writer It can begin as innocently as a wide-eyed toddler putting a shiny new penny into his piggy bank. It can also be a desperate demand for $100 because a teenager wants - or in her mind - `needs' the same name - brand jeans the other kids are wear- ing. When it comes to allowances and what money can and cannot teach a child, the questions facing parents seem endless. How does a child learn the difference between net worth and self-worth? What do you do when your child wants more? At what age should allowances be given? What are age-appropriate amounts of money? Do parents have the right to say how their children spend their allowance? Should chil- dren have to earn their allowance by doing chores around the house? It wasn't a problem for Sam McLaughlin's dad in 1887. When Oshawa's first citizen and founder of General Motors of Canada went to work in his family's -thriving car- riage business at the age of 16, his father paid him $3 per week, of which the senior McLaughlin kept all but 50 cents for room and board. A strong work ethic was obvious- ly instilled into the boy who would become a multi -millionaire industri- alist, the likes of which Canada has rarely seen. But times have changed since Sam McLaughlin left school in his teens to go to work. No one knows that better than Robin Gear- ing, the program co-ordinator of Re- membering Fatherhood, an initiative of Lakeridge Health's Research In- stitute which offers a group program for contemporary fathers. "When a parent is determining whether pocket money is appropri- ate or not, he or she needs to look at whether the child is able to distin- guish between responsibility or if the child just wants to play with it and spend it on video games and candies," says the family counsellor and father of two. "Or, if the child wants to save." Mr. Gearing adds he worries about how an allowance might be used as a form of discipline. "Is it to promote certain behaviour at home? What is the impetus for you to give money to a child? Is it to encourage responsibility or positive behaviour or is it a means of saying to the child, love," says Mr. Gearing lowances, donate a portion to chari- `You'll get X amount of money but `Tycoon' magazine advised ty and blow the rest on whatever if you don't do what I want you to wealthy parents to help their littlest they want," advises the U.S. publica- do, I'll take it away?' They work hard for their money and often can't afford to house, feed, clothe and ed- ucate a family while bestowing large allowances on the kids as well. In North America, most benevolent parents are also relatively frugal. When `Zillions' magazine recent- ly surveyed more than 1,000 chil- dren, ages 8-14 years, it found about half get some kind of allowance. The 8- and 9 -year-olds received an aver- age allowance of $3.74 a week; 10 - and 11 -year-olds received $5.19 and 12- to 13 -year olds got,' $6.66; and 14 -year-olds received an average al- lowance of $9.45. Most admitted their money goes to buy snacks, toys and sports gear and boys and girls received the same amounts. Whether they received an al- lowance or not, most of the kids said they had to perform some kind of duties around the house: washing dishes, cleaning their rooms, taking out the garbage and taking care of a pet. His years of receiving an al- lowance are coming to an end for 18 -year-old Lucas Thompson of Whitby, whose parents give him $20 a week. - "I worked for a while, I had a job," explains the Henry Street High School OAC student. "Then school started up again." Far beyond the candy and toy stage, most of Lucas's allowance "goes into the gas tank" of his car. He says receiving an allowance has, been great and still remembers when he began taking the deal seri- ously. "It was when I was in Grade 6 and I started doing chores around the house," he recalls. "For a long time, I saved most of it. Once I saved up about $600 and bought a guitar and sound effects peddle." But the biggest savings by far is for his education. "I worked a lot last summer and saved most of it to pay for school," adds the student who will be study- ing computer science at a postsec- ondary institute next year. When asked if he will give an al- lowance to his children when he be- comes a father someday, Mr. Thompson did not hesitate: "For sure: ' A few tips to help your kids learn money management instead of taking an allowance for granted An allowance can provide an op- They need to practice making their helping at home learn to put a mon- time and energy while the child is portunity for children to develop own decisions. etary value on character and young can have big payoffs later. good money management habits. achievement. NEWS ADVERTISER OCT. 27, 2000 905-426-6242 RV` travel offers BY PEGGY McDONALD Special to the News Advertiser Having spent the last 14 years travelling the highways of North America with my hus- band John in a recreational vehicle, I've come to be an unabashed fan of spending one's re- tirement years living out of an RV. We have long since concluded that it's the perfect com- bination of flexibility and economy for re- tirees aiming to cover a lot of territory and see something different every year. The best advice I can offer is to do your homework before you embark on your trip. Be methodical, plan your vacation from start to finish. Here are some tips: House Security. Leave the blinds open; have newspapers picked up, grass cut and snow shovelled; put lights on timers; arrange for a neighbour's car in driveway and some- one to do security checks; put the phone on call forward. RV/Car Security. Always travel with doors locked even at the condo or RV Park; Do not stop after hours at rest stops; truck stops are okay. Helpful Travel Books/Planning Your Route. Travel with `Along 1-75.' Your atlas should include counties and exit numbers; mountain directories are a must if your are in the mountains; KOA directories list all parks with cabins for rent. Decide. getting lost is okay; for on-line planning use freetrip.com; randmcnally.com. Cell Phone vs. CBs. An analogue bag phone connects with three watts power; be- flexibility ware of double LD fees; calls are not secure; airwaves travel over water so watch for hidden roaming fees; An analogue -only system is not economical for use in the USA but in an emer- gency, the signal is stronger. In Canada, our one -rate after -hour analogue plan works across the country. Emergency Road Service (ERS). Do not travel without it. RV coverage should include two tow trucks if necessary, unlimited mileage and unlimited calls. RVs need separate con- tents insurance. Breakdown Procedures. Display a sign or white flag. Stay in your car but keep the doors locked with windows open only a bit. If some- one stops, hand them a note through the win- dow crack and ask them to call your ERS. Give the note to more than one person in case the first one doesn't carry through with your requests. Only leave your car if police ask. Do not get out of the car with anyone else. International Call for Help. "Beep, Beep, Beep" - space - "Beep, Beep, Beep" - space - "Beep, Beep, Beep" etc. Turn on all flashing lights. Even if you or anyone has never heard of this call, it is natural that everyone would investigate as to what is wrong. Message Services. You can subscribe to an outside service. Our message service allows us to check in once per day and to receive 31 messages per month. Extra minutes are avail- able for a small fee. We are always only 24 hours away from good and bad news. FFDC service also makes communication easy, but shop for rates. Calling Card choices are endless. Your Education Fair October 30 Find out everything You wanted to Know about college Durham College is hosting an education fair which features hands-on workshops, demonstra- tions, campus tours and information on the wide range of programs offered at Durham College and the University Centre at Durham. Weather Watch. A `watch' reports danger; a `warning' is serious.' USA weather is re- ported by counties, not towns and villages. Tornadoes are deadly - look for a ditch but get 0-4 or eninusiasts out of your vehicles. In Canada, a severe thunderstorm warning is cause for concern. ❑❑❑ Peggi McDonald is the author of Spirit of the Open Road. L1V 1B5 11® PALACE Last night was a special night for ten Dairy Queen employees. Melissa, JD, Shawn, Kristyn, Amanda, Phil, Amy, Gillian, Mary and Jessica experienced the night of their lives. Before I tell you what happened to them I'll tell you_ how they won this dream night. We have eleven managers at our store. You can recognize them by the white shirts. Each shift the manager, on duty prints off a report about each staff member that worked with them on that shift. The report tells us if the employee smiles while serving a customer and many other aspects of the service they give. At the end of the report they nominate the employee who did an outstanding job on that shift. Over the last two months we have run a contest and have tabulated the top ten vote getters or the ones who got there name nominated the most. Here is what they won. Each employee was picked up at their home in a white stretch limousine that seats ten. As parents snapped pictures of their kids getting into the limo we were then wisked to a special dinner in a private room at one of the well known restaurants in Pickering. The limo picked us up after dinner and took us to the Hummingbird Center to sit front row for David Copperfield. The evening wasn't finished because their is only one place for dessert. We were taken back to the Dairy Queen which was now closed to the public and the winners had the run of the store and were treated to the best desserts in the world. And most of all they got to stay out late on a school night! If you remember the names from the article be sure to commend those winners on the great job they do. Also watch one of our eight TV monitors in the coming weeks to see the whole evening recreated for you on video. r---- ----- FREE BANANA SPLIT; with the purchase of the same ' This coupon is not redeemable with any other I coupon or special offer.
