A building is just about complete at Pickering where about 470 dry storage containers (DSC) will be placed. Harland Wake, the director of used fuel stor- age for OPG, told the Pickering Community Ad- visory Council the company has approval from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to begin moving the 80-tonne containers in 2009. Mr. Wake’s department handles the waste from the Pickering, Darlington and Bruce sites. Moving the containers will be done from May to October, he said, adding it will take three years to move all the containers at Pickering into the new building. When spent fuel rods are removed from a reactor, they are placed in water for 10 years to cool down, and then placed in a DSC. In March, the Rouge Valley Health System announced changes within its two hospitals in Ajax and Scarborough in order to alleviate its capital deficiencies and long-term debt of $78 million. Aside from cutting down on staff, the RVHS chose to move Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering’s 20 mental health beds to Rouge Valley Centenary to consolidate its mental health unit, rather than have it split between the two hospitals. In a press release announcing the official move, the RVHS called the bed transfer improvements to its mental health services. “Our new mental-health model will allow us to improve our patient care and offer a more diverse range of services to patients,” said Cheryl Williams, director of mental and emergency services. To transition the new service model, the emergency and crisis intervention services at both hospitals will be expanded, Ms. Wil- liams said. Crisis support in the emergency departments at both sites will be increased to 16 hours a day, seven days a week. The RVHS website says outpatient services are the most used at the hospital since outpa- tient care is utilized on an ongoing basis and beds are only used intermittently or for short periods of time. “All mental health services will continue to be accessed from each hospital campus,” she said. But one patient, Ashley Swalm, who’s been vocal throughout the process, hoped the hospital would change its mind. The On- tario Public Services Employees Union took the Central East Local Health Integration Network to court, since the announcement of the change took place without consulting the public. But the Ontario Superior Court of Justice Divisional Court said the LHIN acted within its guidelines. Ms. Swalm feels her concerns were never listened to. She referred to the April meet- ing when about 1,000 people showed up to say they wanted the beds to remain in Ajax, which she felt fell upon deaf ears. “Patients have come out and said they need the beds,” Ms. Swalm said. But, it’s not only the hospital she’s upset with. “I think it’s the fact that mental health is being neglected by the government,” she said. While the in-patient unit officially moves Friday, Nov. 21, along with the transition to increased crisis hours, other changes will occur in December. On Monday, Dec. 8, the child and adolescent in-patient unit moves from the 10th floor to the 8th floor at Cen- tenary. That day, the new psychiatric inten- sive care unit opens up on the 10th floor at Centenary after some minor renovations are complete. On Monday, Dec. 15, the medical/ psychiatry unit will open on the eighth floor at Centenary, as well as the new child/ado- lescent unit. At Darlington, 45 DSCs are being loaded and it’s the first year of operations. Each year, OPG files about 230 DSCs, he said. “We’re by far the biggest dry storage operation in the world.” Storing the fuel rods on site is an interim plan while the Nuclear Waste Management Organiza- tion (NWMO) continues to find a final storage site. The NWMO is recommending what’s called an adaptive phased management (APM) system to store waste. APM calls for spent fuel to remain on the site it’s produced until a final place is selected. The final storage site will be a deep geological repository. “There is no urgency to move fuel, but the current system is considered interim. There is no firm timetable to implement adaptive phased management or to finding a site, “ Michael Kri- zanc of the NWMO said to the CAC. A waste storage facility near Kincardine is for low and medium fuel, and excludes high-level waste, such as spent fuel, he said. The earliest date a facility could be open is 2035. “That’s the most conservative date we can use for budgeting purposes. We will have identi- fied a willing host by then.” The site selection process for the final site hasn’t begun, Mr. Krizanc said, adding a “willing host” will be sought. “We intend to have an informed and willing host. If not, we have to go back out. There are experiences of informed and willing host com- munities,” Mr. Krizanc said, pointing to Sweden and Finland. “There are vast, large swaths of Canada” that could be used, he said, noting the Canadian Shield would be an ideal area. “It doesn’t need to be a specific type of geology.” “We’re not ruling anything out at this time,” he said, although he noted the site would be in one of the four provinces with nuclear facilities -- Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Saskatch- ewan. Using an old mine has been ruled out as a storage facility, he said. “There are fissures in the rock from blasting. This needs precision drill- ing.” Also, new mining techniques and economic forces could mean an abandoned mine might be reopened, he said. “We want virgin rock.” The facility would only handle waste created in Canada and wouldn’t import it from other countries, Mr. Krizanc said. Pickering an interim location for storage of waste ✦ Pickering from page 1 By Jennifer Stone jstone@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The timely return of wintry driving conditions had Ontario Provincial Police receiving, on average, an accident report every two minutes on the roads it patrols in the province. But the roads weren’t to blame, said one officer. “It’s not the weather; it’s how the person drives,” said Sergeant Dave Woodford. He didn’t have a breakdown according to region by Thursday morning, but said there had been a number of collisions -- mainly minor -- on area roads during and after the 7-8 cm snowfall. Most were minor in nature and none in Durham involved anyone sustaining a major injury, Sgt. Woodford said. “The majority (of reports involve) a single vehicle into the guardrail,” he said of the al- most 500 crashes reported on OPP-patrolled roads since the snow began falling around 4 p.m. Wednesday. But those minor collisions in some cases caused a “chain reaction” as the visual dis- traction of crashes caused others to lose focus on the road long enough to become in- volved in accidents of their own, Sgt. Wood- ford said. Though traffic was at a near half during Thursday’s morning rush hour, there were fewer crashes during that period, due to the slow speed at which people were forced to travel, he said. In one of the more significant local crash- es, a tractor trailer and three other vehicles were involved in a collision near Morgan’s Road, east of Mill Street in Newcastle, along Hwy. 401. Police reports indicate upwards of 400L of diesel fuel was spilled as a result. The collision happened just before 5 a.m., and was largely cleared by mid-morning, Sgt. Woodford said. The accidents were pre- ventable, he said. “People just have to drive to conditions and slow down,” said the ser- geant. More snow is expected Sunday, with wet snow expected to accumulate in similar amounts to what fell overnight Thursday. I was there teaching English and living in the suburbs just south of Tokyo in a sea of single detached houses. Every weekday morning residents on my street would trudge to the communal drop off site with the garbage of the day. One day it was burnables destined for incineration (mostly items we put in the green bin), another day it was plastics. Metals and glass had their own day, as did newspapers and cardboard. In some municipalities there are more than 10 categories of garbage that must be sorted and disposed of on their designated days. By comparison, our curb-side system seems positively luxurious. All we have to do is sort recyclables, kitchen waste and regular garbage. Everything gets picked up on the same day and we don’t have to leave our property to put it out. But there’s a reason for Japan’s intricate system. It’s a lot cheaper for municipali- ties to have residents sort their garbage as opposed to paying someone to do it and building elaborate sorting facilities. As well, materials are less likely to be contaminated, which can render them unrecyclable. In Durham, meanwhile, there’s real resis- tance to anything that would make our waste system more complicated or time consuming for residents. Judging from letters to regional council, a clear garbage bag system will prove unpop- ular. It will be test piloted in Pickering and Clarington communities come January, the first step in rolling it out across the Region, likely in 2010. The way it works is if trash collectors see blue box or green bin material in garbage bags, they can leave it behind at the curb. There will be small allowance for grocery- type bags containing personal products. Some will argue that most of Durham’s residents already participate in the blue and green bin programs and they’re being punished by the clear system. But, we all know it’s simply easier to dump that old container of takeout or tub of yogurt that’s gone off into the trash without rinsing and sorting. Most of us don’t do it every day, but even some of us doing it some of the time adds up. As for those that rarely bother to separate their trash, there’s currently no incen- tive to get them to start. Perhaps the inconvenience of their garbage being left behind will do the trick. The program has increased recycling rates elsewhere. Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan argued the program would be a placebo and that the Region should be focused on adding more items to the blue box program. The latter part of his argument is valid, but the first step is to keep what’s already recyclable out of the trash. The Region’s works department has long argued it doesn’t want to collect material in the blue box that will end up in landfills or sent to China to be dubiously disposed of. That’s a fair point since recycling is much more expensive than landfilling. To pay recycling prices for landfilled material is simply a waste. But, hopefully, while the Region works on launching the clear bag program, markets for materials like clam shell takeout con- tainers will stabilize or a more recyclable alternative will gain popularity. As for residents, the writing’s on the wall: the days of hassle-free garbage collection are over. Reka Szekely’s column appears every fourth Friday. E-mail her at rszekely@durhamregion. com Clear garbage bags coming A jax and Pickering councils have some legitimate concerns about the 25-year Metrolinx plan, con- cerns that must be taken into account and addressed. Released recently by Metrolinx, for- merly the Greater Toronto Transporta- tion Authority, The Big Move: Trans- forming Transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, calls for $50 billion in spending over the next 25 years on about 100 projects, from express rail GO services along the GO Lakeshore line from Hamilton through Oshawa to expanded rail service across the GTA. Regional Chairman Roger Anderson, who sits on the 11-member Metrolinx board, slammed the draft report when it was released, saying “it’s obvious that the GTA stops at Markham Road.” And, west Durham councillors have recently sounded off on ‘The Big Move’ as well, raising valid points. In Pickering, the obvious concern is Seaton won’t be serviced by transit before the community starts welcom- ing new Pickering residents. The draft report envisions rapid transit or rail links between downtown Pickering and Seaton, and Seaton and Toronto. Coun- cillors David Pickles and Doug Dicker- son at a recent council meeting argued, however, if transit isn’t in place before the people, the latter will require cars to travel to work. We would add that once residents there start driving because there’s no bus to take them to work or to connect to the GO station, it’s almost too late to re-capture them as riders if transit is introduced later. The goal of creating a sustainable, environmentally friendly community in north Pickering certainly must include viable transit options for these people when they arrive. After all, we’re not talking about a small subdivision here but a city within the city. As Pickering staff pointed out, crucial transportation and transit infra- structure investment in Pickering to support Seaton is lacking in the first 15 years of the plan. Ajax Council’s concerned the extended Hwy. 407 might be sold by the Province to raise revenues. Council’s wariness is laudable. As Mayor Steve Parish rightly pointed out at a recent meeting, toll money “will inject substantial revenue into these very, very expensive infra- structure needs.” Given the Metrolinx price tag, and the dramatic downturn in the economy, this source of ongoing rev- enue can’t be cut off for short-term gain. As we’ve said before, that Durham only recently merged municipal transit systems and is still planning transit on a regional basis, likely worked against it in terms of getting more of a commitment for local needs in ‘The Big Move’. Seaton, however, certainly warrants consideration by Metrolinx, given the size of and plans for the community. And, to help cover the billions needed to make ‘The Big Move’ a reality, the Hwy. 407 extension must be the property of the provincial government. Reka Szekely More nukes better than more coal-fired plants To the editor: We have to get our power from some- where and for the time being, nuclear is our best option. It is far more efficient than solar or wind and when well-maintained, more reliable. The fact of the matter is that while alter- native energy sources such as wind or solar are excellent for supplementing our energy supply, our focus should remain on nuclear power. With our rising energy needs, more power will have to come from somewhere. It can either come from nuclear or coal. That will be the choice in the end, and in the choice between smoke-choked skies or the miniscule amounts of tritium emit- ted, I think I know what my choice will be. Robert Clark Whitby Volunteers making gift delivery a family project By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com AJAX — Dawn Ullman grew up in an average, middle-class family and never struggled at Christmas time. And now, since it brings her joy and comfort to buy Christmas gifts for her children, Zoe, 6, and Bennett, 4, she feels for the people who can’t do the same for their families. “I can only imagine the pain this brings,” she said. The Ajax resident is part of a group of young families affiliated with Carruthers Creek Community Church in Ajax that meets monthly and, a few times a year, finds ways to give to community and global organizations. Since a number of volunteer programs aren’t exactly family-oriented, the group was happy to help out with the Toronto Star Santa Claus Fund in Scarbor- ough last year. “We really enjoyed doing that because we could take our kids along,” Ms. Ullman said. This year, the group of about 10 families that have volunteered to help out will deliver boxes to both Scarborough and Ajax and Pickering children. The fund was established more than 100 years ago by Toronto Star founder Joseph E. Atkinson, who came from modest beginnings, growing up in a family of eight children. He never forgot the time a stranger bought him a pair of ice skates after watching him observe other youngsters on a pond and asking why he wasn’t skating. Mr. Atkinson later used the Star to tell the stories of less-fortunate kids, asking readers to donate money to buy them gifts. The Ajax-Pickering News Advertiser is involved in the fund for the fifth year and aims to deliver 1,000 boxes to children in Ajax and Pickering. By actually delivering the boxes, filled with items such as sleepers and a small toy for babies, and a warm sweater, socks, mit- tens, a hat, book, toy, candy and a toothbrush and tooth- paste for kids four to 12, they get to see the con- ditions in which less- fortunate people live. Roland Michener P.S., which opened at 95 Ritchie Ave. in September 1988, turned 20 years old this past September. We continue to strive to develop students he would be proud to have represent him. Scholastic, team work and leadership, arts and athletics, respectful behaviour and service to others are all attributes students work toward developing. Mr. Michener was born on April 19, 1900. He was Canada’s Governor General from 1967 to 1976. He was appointed Governor General the same year Canada celebrated 100 years of confederation. He was delight- ed to have a new school named after him and attended its opening. The school originally drew its population from the surrounding community to the east of Westney Road, but now includes families living in the Lexington sub- division east of Ajax. The population has grown to 500 students and the school houses 24 classrooms, includ- ing 10 portables. Roland Michener’s school motto, ‘Your Place To Grow’, is evident. Parents and staff work together to help students achieve their best and become thought- ful, responsible students. Healthy living is an important part of our school life. Through our daily physical education programs, elec- tives, activities and emphasis on fitness, we work to help students make good choices. The Michener Mus- tangs sports teams participate in flag football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country, lacrosse and many other sports. Students and staff at Roland Michener have an abundance of artistic talent. Drama, music and visual arts are a key element in all areas of the curriculum. Programs are developed to reflect the cultural diversity in our community and it is not unusual to hear African drums playing in the halls, children rapping or stu- dents doing ballroom dancing. Being a good leader and citizen is of major impor- tance in our school community. Grade 7 and 8 stu- dents lead small groups of younger students through weekly character activities and act as role models. With the help of our school community, many chari- ties are supported yearly such as Heart and Stroke, Sick Kids Hospital and Hearth Place to name a few. Students are learning the importance of giving back. We are very proud our school was recently recognized as a Gold level ECO school, an honour few receive. We continue to form partnerships with the community to protect our environment. Roland Michener was a life-long learner who had a vision for Canada and our school. As a school com- munity, staff, students and parents continue to learn together, respect each other and appreciate and support those around them. The session in Pickering is set for Monday, Nov. 24 at the East Shore Community Centre, on Liv- erpool Road south of Bayly Street. For the Darlington station, the session is on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at the Clarington Beech Centre, 26 Beech Ave., in Bowmanville. During a meeting of the Pickering nuclear station’s Com- munity Advisory Council on Tues- day, Mark Elliott said the sessions are being held in communities that host a nuclear station. CNSC staff completed reports on the performance of all nuclear stations and the performance in 2007 and a portion of 2008 will be discussed during the sessions, Mr. Elliott said. The CNSC grades a plant per- formance from A to E, and “no OPG station received either a D or an E,” said Mr. Elliott, senior vice- president of Pickering ‘A’. “Overall OPG is pleased with the (CNSC) staff results. It confirms our plants are being operated safely. “All OPG operations are done safely and within regulatory lim- its,” he said. The grades for Darlington were primarily A or B, with only one C coming in a program related to equipment. The equipment program began last year and the CNSC gave the C as it continues to monitor the program. Pickering ‘B’ received grades of A or B, while the ‘A’ side had seven C grades, including three in the operations area. That had to do primarily to the shutdown of Units 1 and 4 over the summer of ’07 while an electrical system was up- graded. In addition to plant perfor- mance, there will be highlights of the CNSC’s activities in 2007 and ’08, and any topic of interest peo- ple would like to raise. These sessions will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m., with the presenta- tion starting at 7 p.m. CNSC staff will also be available afterwards to answer questions. Mr. Elliott also told CAC mem- bers that on the ‘A’ side, there’s been an increase in tritium releas- es, although he added the levels are “still lower than our regulatory limits. “We won’t know the full public dose numbers until the spring,” he said. The tritium and air emission re- leases surpassed an internal level, he said. “In this case, we are still much, much lower than any regulatory limits. It’s under control,” Mr. El- liott said, adding equipment that “broke down has been fixed. We do have it under control. For a pe- riod of this year, it was higher than normal.” “Neither the emission or pub- lic dose came anywhere near the dose to public limits. It’s our own internal limit,” Pickering’s public affairs manager Don Terry said. The fire happened just after 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 15, and Ajax Fire and Emergency Services Deputy Chief Mark Diotte said it was a “small fire” and that “everyone had evacu- ated the home” prior to firefighters arriving on the scene. “There’s no dollar estimate,” he said, noting the damage was lim- ited to the contents. “The structure is fine.” Durham Regional Police spokes- man Dave Selby said the woman, who was distraught and going through a tough time, was being held for a mental health assess- ment. Intake One, part of the Building Canada Fund, was launched in September and fo- cuses on projects in communities with popu- lations of less than 100,000. Pickering has cho- sen to submit an application for funding for some much-needed repairs and restorations on heritage buildings at the Pickering Mu- seum Village. The museum has 16 heritage buildings and a number of them need repairs. The biggest project is the Brougham Central Hotel restoration, expected to cost $585,000. The Log Barn, the Gas and Steam Barn, the Redman House and various building founda- tions also require work. “Without this grant funding, the projects... would require City financing over several years,” the staff report states. If the project is chosen, Pickering will have to pay one third of the project costs and Intake One will cover the rest. The costs are expected to be $885,000, so Intake One would cover $590,000. The Pickering Museum Vil- lage Foundation, which is partnering with the City on the initiative, has $180,000 to contrib- ute towards the project, and the City would finance the remaining $115,000. The executive committee endorsed the mu- seum as the project chosen for the grant. As long as Council approves it Monday, the ap- plication can be filed. The member of the Citizen’s Group for Traffic Calming on Fair- port Road made a presentation to the executive committee Monday night. The group has been meeting with the City to find solutions to the speeding problems they find on Fairport Road and have sug- gested traffic calming methods such as installing more stop signs and raised medians and cross- walks. The group has estimated the work would cost about $250,000. At an October meeting, Pickering resident Charlotte Sheardown called the group’s plans self-serv- ing, saying speeding is a prob- lem on all Pickering streets and she didn’t see why Fairport Road should get special treatment. Although the group is interest- ed in traffic calming on Fairport Road specifically, Mr. Cumming said, it hopes to create a template that can be used for other areas in the city. Besides, he said, the group is looking out for the safety of not only those who live on Fairport Road, but also those who travel on it. “This is not a volume issue for us; it’s a safety issue,” he said. “This is ridiculous” since the whole idea of the plan is to stop people from using Fairport Road as an express route, said Ms. Sheardown, who was at the meet- ing for the presentation. “I found that most of his speech was contradictory,” she said. The committee did radar work with police, Mr. Cumming said, and counted the number of speed- ing cars for a night. The group found an average of 68 cars speed along Fairport Road at a speed of more than 90 kilo- metres per hour each day. “That’s 68 cars that should be impounded under Ontario’s new law,” he said, in reference to the law aimed at speeders driving more than 50 kilometres above the limit. The posted speed limit on Fairport is 40 km/h. Staff’s report, which shows the City has received 75 comments in support of the traffic calming initiative and 26 against it, states the only clear trends of collisions on the road take place at the in- tersection of Fairport Road and Sheppard Avenue due to verti- cal alignment and visibility con- straints. The City should build on the work by the group, the report states, to create a moderate, bal- anced traffic plan through a full, public, community consultation process, rather than support the group’s specific initiatives. But the committee pushed the item to a December meeting and it will be up for discussion then. Ajax is submitting an application under the Building Canada Fund, an infrastructure pro- gram that involves the federal and provincial governments. Dave Meredith, the operations and en- vironmental services director, told council last week staff recommends reconstructing Fairall Street. Under similar programs in the past, each government level would be responsible for one-third of a project’s cost. It will be up to the federal government to select which proj- ects are funded. The deadline to submit an application is Nov. 21, Mr. Meredith said. “We don’t have a dollar figure” on the cost of reconstructing Fairall, Mr. Meredith said. “We need to put a business case together and show the costs.” In recent years, the Town has submitted applications under similar programs but was turned down. As for the Town’s chances of being chosen, Mr. Meredith said, “At this point in time, I have no feeling one way or the other. In my mind, it depends on the business case.” Only one project can be submitted, and “a number of projects were considered at senior management. This project had the highest priority and the best chance for success,” Mr. Meredith said. If the Town’s project is selected, design work would be done in early 2009 and “de- pending on the scope,” the actual work would be done in the second half of next year or in early 2010, Mr. Meredith said in an interview. “Ideally, it would be an ’09 project.” The project “isn’t a simple resurfacing. We have to replace the sewer,” he said. Given Fairall’s importance as a connector road to the GO station, it should warrant strong consideration, Mayor Steve Parish said. Also, the road is in poor shape and needs to be reconstructed, he said. “A strong case can be made.” How the work would be done will “present a challenge,” Mr. Meredith said in an inter- view. Closing the road until the work is com- pleted would adversely affect the businesses on the street, as well as inconvenience transit users. “We’ll look at difference scenarios,” he said, such as reducing traffic to one lane at a time or staging the work along the street. The facility consists of an above ground building, access roads and landscaping features. • Meter Facility - Located on the west side of Altona Road, immediately south of the Hydro corridor, the facility measures the sewage fl ow, to allow fi nancial cost sharing between the two Regions. • Maintenance Chambers – Located at selected intervals along the entire length of the new SEC trunk sewer, these chambers allow access from the ground surface to the sewer elevation for future operation and maintenance purposes. These chambers are not required for sewer construction by tunnel. • Central Duffi ns Collector (CDC) Chamber - Located on the north west corner of Valley Farm Road and Finch Avenue, the chamber will allow for the connection of the CDC sewer to the new SEC trunk sewer or to the existing SEC trunk sewer as required by Regional operation and maintenance staff. • Connection Chamber – Located at the south east corner of Valley Farm Road and Finch Avenue, the chamber will allow for the connection of the new SEC trunk sewer to the downstream YDSS trunk sewer. The map identifi es the locations of the various facilities as well as the proposed tunnel access shafts along the Preferred Sewer Route. Following the identifi cation of the Preferred Sewer Route, a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) Report documenting the SEC Trunk Sewer IEA process was prepared for agency and public review between July 21 and August 29, 2008. York and Durham Regions have fi nalized the EA Report based on comments received on the draft EA Report. The fi nal EA Report is being submitted to the Minister for approval of the Preferred Undertaking under the EAA. George, an intelligent man, and Lennie, a strong worker with limited men- tal abilities, end up on a California ranch, in the early 1930s, hoping to get closer to their dream. But things don’t go as planned for the two workers and thus, the title, taken from Robert Burns’ poem, To a Mouse, in which he writes of “the best-laid plans of mice and men” going awry. Since the play is written so per- fectly, Smith, who directed last sea- son’s Steel Magnolias, which won an ACT-CO award for best comedy, has taken her time with it, wanting to make sure she was ready to tackle it. She’s waited years to direct Of Mice and Men to make sure she can stage it properly, she said. A play written so perfectly pres- ents “certain challenges. You can’t muck it up with anything,” she said. “The characters are very iconic,” she said, two people whose search for their idea of a perfect life is “shattered.” The characters’ hope and dreams are universal, she said. Everyone wants to settle down and have their own piece of the world, she said. “That’s why I find it so appeal- ing.” Despite its serious theme and its Depression-era setting, it’s not a dreary, depressing play, Smith said. “It’s not like (Steinbeck’s) The Grapes of Wrath. I personally don’t find it depressing. It’s a very uplift- ing play. It’s a fun play, too, oddly enough.” To help her stage the perfect play, Smith cast a strong group of ac- tors, from all over Durham, includ- ing Uxbridge, Pickering, Port Perry, Whitby, and beyond Durham. David Geene is the simple-mind- ed Lennie, while Andy Fiddes is George, his companion and protec- tor. The rest of the cast is made up of Colin Murphy, Joe Bezubiak, Mike Wood, Vanessa Hallman, Mark Fer- raro, Graeme Powell, Richard East- man and James Gilbert. Steinbeck’s book, on which the play is based, met with controversy as it was banned due to the lan- guage. However, it has persevered to become one of his most beloved novels and the play is still per- formed around the world. Annandale team loses seniors’ event final in extra end By Jim Easson Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — An Annandale Golf and Curling Club senior wom- en’s rink fell just short of the title at the Toronto and District Ladies’ Bonspiel in Toronto last weekend. Presented by Revera Re- tirement, the Toronto Curl- ing Association event’s finals were hosted at the St. George’s Golf and Curling Club. Annan- dale was represented by three rinks at the bonspiel skipped by Lorraine Scanlan, Rhonda Welch and Sandra Thain. Thain’s rink earned its way to the senior fourth event final and played a close game, only to lose in an extra end. This year was the fourth year in a row the Thain team made it to the finals, but this was its first try in the seniors’ event. Curling with Thain were Barb Luffman, Joan O’Leary and spares Kathy Kerr and Terry Pinkney. The Scanlan foursome com- peted in the open event, winning their first game, but dropping their next two to exit the compe- tition. Curling with Scanlan were Diane Leahy, Bea O’Regan and Diane Easson. The Welch rink also competed in the open event, but were also sidelined in the early going. On the Welch team were Janet Al- exander, April Risto and Leslie Bainard. ••• Annandale has three teams entered in the Ontario Curling Association’s Pepsi Junior Zone playdown at the Whitby Curling Club from Nov. 22 to 25. At least two of the three Annandale en- tries will advance to the region- als at the Oshawa Curling Club the following weekend. The junior ladies’ team of Les- ley Pyne, Stacey Hogan, Suzanne Miller and Katie Hickey, with coach Jennifer McGhee, have one opponent so are guaranteed to advance. The junior men’s zone only has three teams in total so at least one team will advance. The teams are Michael Bryson, James McPherson, Sandy Martin and Josh Hall, coached by Su- sannah Moylan, and a bantam entry of Ben Bevin, Jake McGee, Chris Avery and Carter Ardair is coached by Paul Bourque. The eight-seeded Lady Cougars defeated the Etobicoke Collegiate In- stitute Rams of Toronto 44-37 in a low-scoring opener at the 16-team Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) ‘AAAA’ Senior Girls’ Basketball Champi- onships in Sarnia. The Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) champion Lady Cougars played the Joan of Arc Knights of Barrie in second-round action at St. Clair Secondary School late Thursday afternoon, with the result unavailable at press time. A victory over Joan of Arc would put the Lady Cougars into the play- off quarter-finals on Friday morning, likely against the top-seeded Eastern Commerce Saints of Toronto, which demolished the Sacred Heart Hus- kies of Stittsville 67-32 in their first- round contest. Notre Dame led Etobicoke 23- 17 at half time. The Lady Cougars continued to lead the way in the third quarter with a 34-28 advantage. Next, the Lightning faced a Buffalo squad, earning a 6-1 victory. To advance to the final, Dur- ham West needed to record a victory over Syracuse.
