In fact, the gifts are chosen in February, the workshop is secured and set up over the summer and the packing of gift boxes for delivery to households began this month. Thousands of volunteers, including Girl Guides, Scouts and service club representa- tives, deliver the boxes to kids in need. Fund helpers take the boxes to families having money problems in these difficult economic times, or perhaps dealing with in- come earners in poor health. Often, helpers are met with a heartfelt thank you or even a tearful hug, not just for the gift box, but be- cause someone is thinking of them, whether or not the family celebrates Christmas. Once again this year, the Ajax-Pickering News Advertiser will do its part to make the Santa Claus Fund a success in 2008. “Taking part in the Santa Claus Fund is a very rewarding experience for our staff,” said Abe Fakhourie, the New Advertiser’s distribution manager. “It’s an opportunity for us to give back to the communities we serve.” Tim Whittaker, Metroland Durham Re- gion Media Group and Ajax-Pickering News Advertiser publisher, is justifiably proud to support the fund that helps the less fortu- nate, and he’s amazed by the continued efforts of staff to ensure area families have a happy holiday season. “This is our fifth year taking part in the Santa Claus Fund and each year the rewards increase,” said Mr. Whittaker. “Delivering the gift packages across Ajax and Pickering for the past four years has reminded our employees just how important it is to give back to the community.” Established by Toronto Star founder Jo- seph E. Atkinson, the fund celebrated 102 years last year. One of eight children in a family of modest means, a stranger bought the young Joe Atkinson a pair of ice skates after watching him observe other young- sters on a pond and asking why he wasn’t skating. Touched by the gift, he later used the Star to tell the stories of less-fortunate kids, asking readers to donate money to buy them gifts. It was an act of generosity that would in- fluence Atkinson’s half-century stewardship of the Star, manifesting itself in the Atkinson Principles of social justice that guide the paper to this day, and initiatives such as the Santa Claus Fund and the Fresh Air Fund, which provides needy children with a get- away to a summer camp. Adrian Charles, 22, a native of Whitby, had established himself as a star running back with the Saska- toon Hilltops of the Canadian Ju- nior Football League, according to media reports from the province. Mr. Charles was arrested in Sas- katoon earlier this month after a lengthy investigation into a shoot- ing incident in Pickering May 24. Durham police said shots were fired at a car as it was being driven behind an industrial plaza at Bayly and Brock streets. Although the BMW was hit by several rounds, the two men inside were not hurt. Mr. Charles was arrested by RCMP in Saskatoon, then handed over to Durham police and transported back to this jurisdiction, where he is charged with two counts of at- tempted murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder. Po- lice said the investigation contin- ues and at least two other suspects are still being sought. Mr. Charles is scheduled to ap- pear for a bail hearing next Monday in Oshawa. His arrest interrupted what’s being described in Saskatoon as a stellar career in the CJFL, a feeder league for university and profes- sional football programs. “He’s probably one of the best running backs at that age level in the country and I’m including most of the university backs in that (as- sessment),” said one Saskatchewan journalist, who asked that his name not be used. “He’s pretty special.” Entries on the team website de- pict Mr. Charles as a key player on a Hilltops team that has gone un- beaten this season, outscoring op- ponents 311-54. Mr. Charles shat- tered the Hilltops’ single-season rushing record, accumulating 1,236 yards, according to media reports. Mr. Charles, in his third season with the Hilltops, led them to a national title last year, according to reports. Ghouls and goodies at Community Festival Two hundred kids get education in being green By Crystal Crimi ccrimi@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Using old milk car- tons, student Mitchell Smethurst planted flowers into a living wall. The contraption Mitchell worked on featured more than a dozen milk cartons with flowers plant- ed inside, arranged in a wooden frame so watering just the top row would also get those below. “It’s supposed to be a flower- type thing,” said Mitchell, a Grade 6 student from Monsignor Philip Coffey School in Oshawa. “You’re using recycled milk cartoons and you’re using the environment with the flowers.” The project was just one of sev- eral activities taken on by more than 200 students at the Durham Catholic District School Board’s recent youth environment summit at the Petticoat Creek Conserva- tion Area in Pickering. Each school was invited to send a staff leader along with a team of up to six students. Funds for the project came from a more than $23,000 grant to sup- port environmental education from the Council of Ontario Direc- tors of Education. The event saw students partici- pate in environmental activities, such as creating living walls, mea- suring energy used by appliances, making an eco-quilt and working on school action plans. At one set of tables, students tested appliances using a device to measure their energy usage. “Let’s remember anything that has heat needs more power,” said a supervisor to a group of students sitting at a picnic table. In front of them was a kettle, curling iron and hair dryer to plug into a power outlet. “We basically learn how many watts it has,” said Sarah Wickett, a Grade 8 student at Holy Family in Beaverton. “I didn’t know that a hair dryer has so many watts.” The hair dryer registered its usage at 1875 watts; Sarah uses one every day. “I’ll probably let it air dry most of the time now, I want to save hydro,” Sarah said. “I’m really in- terested in the environment and I want to help it.” Sarah’s dad is also an environ- mental consultant, she said. At her school, they already have a system in place to turn the lights out. She and her team will also bring back an information board to share with the school. St. Jude Catholic School in Ajax has just started working toward EcoSchool status. They got into it after having a garbage audit done last year and realizing how much they were producing. “That really upsets us,” said teacher Anne Marie Stott-Lander. “We were compared to one that had a tenth of the garbage.” The audit showed them how much work they still had to do, she said. Getting on board the EcoS- chools program will reduce waste and save the school money on gar- bage removal. “We’ve already started boomer- ang lunches,” she said, which has students bring home garbage from their lunches. St. Jude has 20 students on its EcoSchools team, six of which were at the environment summit. The living wall they were creat- ing will help green-up the school, she said. “We’ll probably hang it in the entrance of the school,” Ms. Stott- Lander said. The students attending the event will become leaders in their classrooms for energy conserva- tive, waste reduction, and will make announcements with envi- ronmental tips. “They were so excited on the bus coming here, just being part of all this,” she said. The summit allows students at- tending to become environmental experts for their schools and ad- vocates in their community, said Tish Sheppard, a board program consultant. “Hopefully they’ll leave with the energy to continue it in their schools,” Ms. Sheppard said. In November, there will be an off-site meeting where board reps meet with the school’s eco-lead- ers to provide support and share ideas. • Weekends – $40 Weekday only $32 • Fleet of 54 Yamaha power carts • Driving Range • Practice Green • Licenced Club House & Patio • Twilight rates available • Men’s, Ladies’ and Seniors’ Leagues • Great membership rates Visit www.porthopegolf.ca For Money Saving Coupons 82 Victoria Street, Port Hope • 1-800-346-5361 Find Out What Your Home Is Worth On-Line Visit: www.DurhamRegionHomeValue.net RE/MAX Rouge River Realty Ltd, Brokerage, Independently Owned and Operated, Gary Plummer, Broker 905-668-1800 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 24, 2008 PAGE 5 A/Pdurhamregion.com Students help create living wall at environment summit Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo Patrick Smith, left, and Will Smith from St. Jude Catholic School in Ajax work on a living wall planting while attending the Youth Environment Summit held at Petticoat Creek Conservation Area in Pickering. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 24, 2008 durhamregion.com I t has been said you cannot judge another’s life until you have walked a mile in their shoes. This is one of the mottos that The Ref- uge, a street centre for youth in Oshawa, is using to alter the harsh opinions associat- ed with homeless teenagers on the streets of Durham. We know instinctively that youth living on the streets have a difficult lifestyle but brush it off by labelling them as delin- quents. This was one of the major eye-open- ers I experienced while recently visiting The Refuge. Coming from a loving home, where there is always love, support, food and warmth, it was hard to imagine the hardships that street youth my age, or younger, encounter daily. I envisioned drugs, alcohol, extreme anger and school truancy leading to homelessness. In my mind, if this was a choice they made then why should I worry about it? It was their poor choices that landed them home- less. After visiting The Refuge, as part of a school trip, I changed my mind complete- ly. Reasons for leaving home vary for each person but usually include physical or sexual abuse, abandonment, lack of per- sonal safety and poverty. Some students report their parents throw them out for not complying with rules. Is this the cause for 88,000 youth in Canada running away from home annually? Each day brings the fear of not knowing where meals and other survival essentials will come from or what the day will bring. It is reported that 95 per cent of homeless teens have been sexually abused while living on the streets. Is this the exciting life of no parents, rules or school? The Refuge staff member spoke about the youth they deal with and how they develop trusting relationships that enable them to encourage positive decision mak- ing amongst the youth. Faith is strongly expressed at The Refuge, and it is apparent from the moment you arrive. The cross on the front door and the statue of Jesus on display in the hallway are tokens of faith that remind the youth of God’s love for each one of them. The centre not only speaks of this love but expresses it by providing for the emotion- al, mental, physical and spiritual needs of the youth visiting. The Refuge also runs a centre called The Second Chance Centre, which is a safe atmosphere where youth can meet others while receiving breakfast and lunch. It is open each weekday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and is usually visited by an average of 35 to 40 teenagers daily. The Refuge has noted a definite increase in usage of the centre, up 85 per cent over the past year. I briefly had the chance to see some youths at The Second Chance Centre and felt shocked. There were at least six people, just hanging out and having fun. I couldn’t imagine that when the night was through they’d be going to sleep under a bridge, or on the side of a street. They looked no different than an average teen, dressed in jeans and sweaters with smiles on their faces. It was then that I realized these youth were no different than myself, still developing into an adult, needing direction and love in order to grow. Even if they don’t have a home, they still have a family at The Refuge. Natalie van Rooy is a St. Mary Catholic Secondary School co-operative education student at the News Advertiser. Refuge visit dispels misconceptions E xcitement is building for Ajax and Pickering kids as Halloween nears. When else can a boy or girl dress up and roam the streets, collecting candy from neighbours and strangers alike? Still, it’s important kids, parents and motorists take care to have a safe as well as a fun time. The Canada Safety Council released a number of Halloween safety tips this week. “It’s a challenge for parents to teach their children to be cautious without making them fearful or anxious,” states president Jack Smith. “There are dangers, but you lessen children’s risks of them if you talk about safety and instil rules early on.” It advises parents to dress their little ghouls and goblins in a light-coloured costume or, at least, a costume with reflec- tive stickers so the trick-or-treater is visible in the dark. And, while many kids want to wear a mask, take note they often limit vision; makeup or face paint is preferable. When it’s time to carve the pumpkin, don’t let kids handle knives. They can be integral to the process, however, by draw- ing the design of their choosing on the pumpkin. The fun really begins when you let your child scoop out, with their hands, not the knife, the gooey innards of the pumpkin. On the big night, light up your pumpkin with a glow stick instead of a candle. Homeowners should ensure trick-or- treaters have a clear path to their front door. Leaves can be very slippery, especially if damp, and we all know many kids will be running from door to door instead of walk- ing safely. Get rid of the leaves and other obstacles in your driveway or walkway. Motorists need to understand the small- est treat seekers often go out with mom or dad early, when many people are still returning from work. Drive slowly and remain alert in residential neighbour- hoods. Enter and exit driveways carefully, checking, double- and triple-checking blind spots to ensure there are no kids around. Look for trick-or-treaters at inter- sections on medians and curbs. The Council advises kids under 10 should go out before it gets too dark and with a parent or other adult. Older kids, if going out alone, should carry a cell phone and go with friends, if possible. Once the kids are back home, sort through their loot and throw out items that looks tampered with, loose candy, spoiled items and homemade treats. Have a happy and safe Halloween! Natalie van Rooy Foreign cars won’t save local jobs To the editor: As I drove home on Thursday night, I couldn’t help but laugh. I went by a Chevy Aveo with a Buy Domestic plate frame on it. The Aveo is made in Korea. Stick a bow tie on it, though, and it’s domestic. When I arrived home I noticed my neighbour had the same Buy Domestic message on his Sunfire. The Sunfire is a Mexican-made car. How does a foreign-made car save your jobs and protect your future? At this point, all I can say is Buzz Hargrove has done all he can to take your money, your dignity and beliefs, and retired with a generous pension package. Oh, and by the way, Chris Buckley is not far behind. The work- ers at GM got sold a bill of goods, it has come back to bite them, just like commu- nism did the Russians. GM is only closing plants because the wages and benefits they are paying are higher than in the U.S. Thanks, Mr. Hargrove, thanks, Mr. Buckley. No concessions. No debate. No negotiating. Oh yeah, no jobs. Thanks so much. Enjoy your pension and your retirement. Jack Miner Public School is this year’s ‘Hey, We’re Looking Good This Summer’ contest winner, earning it $300 to continue its garden projects. “Yay,” someone in the audience quietly called when Jack Miner was announced as the winner during the Durham District School Board’s Oct. 20 meeting. Dr. F.J. Donevan Collegiate Institute is the second-place finisher, earning it $200. “We’d like to acknowledge, in our 20 years of doing this, this is the first time a secondary school has been a runner up,” said Terri-Lee Sanford, the board’s com- munications assistant. Area finalists include Highbush Pub- lic School, Pickering; Joseph Gould Pub- lic School, Uxbridge, Scugog, and Brock; and, Terry Fox Public School, Ajax. Joseph Gould was also the third place finisher overall. All finalists received a tool box. This year, 52 schools participated in the contest, each receiving $25 to use for seeds, plants, shrubs and other garden materials. In July, schools were judged on overall appearance, originality, plant growth and lack of weeds and litter. Finalists were asked to submit a report explaining the range of people involved and the education value of their projects. In a letter to the City requesting its support, the director of outreach for the Humane Society, Bruce Passmore, said hens confined in battery cages spend their entire reproductive lives, about 18 months, crowded into one cage with four- to-six other birds. This compromises their natural behaviours such as dust-bathing, wing-flapping, nesting, perching, walking and simply standing on solid ground. “Each hen is given less space than a sin- gle sheet of letter-sized paper,” he said. The motion basically encourages: res- taurants to highlight the availability of free-range eggs (where hens roam freely on the farm) on their menus; consumers to request the option of purchasing them at restaurants and grocery stores; whole- salers and retailers to highlight a prefer- ence for them; and, caterers of City-run facilities to be requested to use free-range eggs. A letter will also be sent to the provin- cial and federal governments, the Food Inspection Agency and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario requesting that all members adopt a similar initiative. Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell said it would be “appalling” not to support the request when other councillors suggested receiving it for in- formation. But after some tweaking to the wording to ensure the motion simply encourages the idea, and won’t force it, Council approved it unanimously. Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and Switzerland have already banned the use of battery cages, and the entire European Union will follow suit in 2012. Burger King, Denny’s and Whole Foods Market have made similar moves. The community of Seaton is expected to have about 70,000 residents in north Pickering and create 35,000 jobs. The City is responsible for cer- tain studies and plans, so they’ve been combined into the Seaton Neighbourhood Planning Pro- gram. The program includes identifying performance mea- sures for a sustainable communi- ty and the completion of studies such as urban design guidelines and neighbourhood plans. The terms were debated in great length in the past and were deferred to Monday’s meeting, where two members of the public gave presentations in opposition to the terms. Ward 1 City Councillor Jenni- fer O’Connell wasn’t pleased the terms were passed quickly and without Council discussion since she’d been prepared to discuss the topic. Council also approved a joint management commit- tee comprised of three City staff members and three members of the Seaton Landowners Group, along with a list of possible con- sultants. “I was shocked that something this important would be passed without discussion,” Coun. O’Connell said in an interview after the meeting. But Mayor Dave Ryan in an in- terview said he went through the normal process at Council and “didn’t see any hands go up.” He wasn’t surprised when he didn’t see anyone wanting to speak. “There’s been a lot of discussion about it,” he said, adding Council and residents will still have ample time to give input on Seaton. “All we’re doing is creating in effect a technical group with a consultant that would facilitate the process,” he said. Coun. O’Connell said there should have been an environ- mental servicing plan conducted and who’s paying for infrastruc- ture should have been defined. “It’s going to be millions and millions of dollars,” she said. Whitevale resident Peter Ro- drigues, whose home is located on the Seaton lands, spoke to Council about his opposition to Seaton in general and the terms of reference. He also had issue with the joint management com- mittee. “I realize they have a vested interest,” he said. “However, pre- cisely because they have a vested interest, it sure raises questions. And even if they are allowed to participate, why do they have as many representatives as the City does?” Coun. Pickles asked Mr. Ro- drigues if he’s aware of all of the public consultation that has gone into Seaton. Mr. Rodrigues said he is, but just because he’s en- gaged doesn’t mean his input will really count. “I’m engaged and I’ll leave here tonight and the development goes through,” he said. Ward 3 Regional Coun. Rick Johnson said Council basically has to support the terms of refer- ence because doing so allows for Pickering’s input in the process. “We’re prisoners of the Prov- ince, that’s all,” Coun. Johnson said. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 24, 2008 PAGE 11 A/Pdurhamregion.com Residents unhappy with latest Seaton plans PICKERING — It’s time for the IT server room to cool down, say Pickering City staff. In the 2008 budget, $20,000 was set aside for an air conditioning replacement, but con- sultants later guessed a proper replacement will cost about $175,000. So staff planned to re-submit the project for the 2009 budget. In the meantime, a temporary fix was installed in the computer room in mid-July, and on Sept. 4, the unit failed and the room reached 42 C, shutting down the comput- ers. It resulted in at least four-and-a-half hours of lost productivity time. Staff noted this could happen again, possibly affecting the phone and e-mail systems. City staff asked the executive committee Wednesday to speed up the tendering process for a new air conditioning unit. City staff have set up two portable air con- ditioning units in the server room, but it’s not effective in the long-term. “At present, hot air discharging from the server room is increasing the cooling load demand and creating a static air pressure problem in the entire civic complex,” staff said, adding the current measures are not sustainable. Council approved staff’s request to go through the formal tender process and will present the findings by the end of 2008. Winterproofing will boost your home’s energy efficiency, save you money and help keep the whole family cozy. The Home Depot Canada has developed the following winterizing checklist to help you prepare your home before the snow falls. Draft-proof windows and doors. Sealing cracks with weather stripping or caulking is an easy, cost- efficient way to prevent cold air from coming in. This is especially true in homes more than 20 years old, where air leakage can account for up to 40 per cent of overall heat loss. Insulate cold areas. Insulate cold- er areas of the home such as the attic, porch or basement to reduce heat loss and save more on energy bills. Lay down rugs. Insulate cold floor- ing such as tile or hardwood, by laying down a stylish area rug. Your feet and pets will thank you. Install a programmable ther- mostat. A programmable thermostat means you never need to remember to adjust your home’s temperatures at night or when you’re away. Used properly, it can reduce heating bills by up to 10 per cent per year. Check the furnace. Clean or re- place your furnace’s air filter each month to increase heat circulation and re- duce fuel costs. Do regular maintenance checks, clear away any flammables and call in a Home Depot expert installer if there are any significant problems. Prep the fireplace. Test the damp- er and clean the chimney to make sure the fireplace is ready for use. Remember to use a safety grate and all the neces- sary tools for worry-free fires. Most home décor manufacturers now offer eco-friendly products to meet the demand of this growing trend, and the choices are more interesting than ever. From energy efficient windows to engineered flooring, consumers can now adopt an environmentally-friendly décor theme and still create spectacular spaces. Your floor is always a good place to start since it’s the second largest surface in any room. Possibilities are endless but you may want to think about something unique, expressive and bold. How about a floor made from 100% recycled leather? This totally new prod- uct from Torlys Smart Floors was recently introduced across Canada, and by all accounts is creating a sensation. Now you can “go green” with the world’s first leather floor, and be abso- lutely sure your choice has clear envi- ronmental benefits. The leather in these floors is recycled from jackets, uphol- stery, belts, shoes and handbags that would otherwise find their way to the local landfill. And every floor is made with a backing layer of cork - a natural insulator - for extra comfort, warmth and quietness. Torlys Leather flooring is made with the ultra-tight Uniclic joint, a patented “click” joint designed for “un-installa- tion” and re-use. Every floor can be easily disassembled and moved to an- other room, or donated to a Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Durham’s social services department, in partnership with CUPE Local 1764, present- ed each of the region’s six child care centres and three nursery schools with a certificate to acknowledge the contribution and benefits they provide to children and the local com- munity on a daily basis. Staff working in the children’s services division at regional headquarters, were also honoured. “This day of appreciation provides the ideal opportunity to heighten awareness about the significant contribution that our child care centres and nursery schools have on the lives of children and their families,” said Dr. Hugh Drouin, commissioner of social services. “We are extremely thankful for the hard work and dedication of these individuals. They deliver high-quality programs and ser- vices each day to suit the unique needs of our children -- the foundation of our com- munity.” The appreciation day -- Oct. 22 -- was pro- claimed by various child organizations like the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care, as a day to emphasize the benefits obtained from affordable, accessible high-quality child care. Region’s child care workers recognized Judge cites little boy’s ‘horror and pain’ By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — An Oshawa man has been given an eight-year pris- on sentence for the brutal sexual assault of a little boy who had come to regard him as a father figure. “(The) attack on (the child) was vicious, sustained, unprovoked and utterly terrifying,” Superior Court Justice David Salmers said in sentencing the man, who plead- ed guilty last month to aggravated sexual assault. “The horror and pain (the boy) went through that day must have been incredible.” Justice Salmers also directed that the man, now 21, be placed on the national sex offender registry for life and will be banned for life from attending parks, community cen- tres and other places young people might congregate and from work- ing or volunteering with children. The man, whose name is sub- ject to a publication ban aimed at protecting the victim’s identity, pleaded guilty to an August 2007 incident in which the victim, the two-year-old son of his girlfriend, was beaten and sexually assault- ed in an Oshawa apartment. In a lengthy reading of his reasons for sentence, Justice Salmers recited a ghastly litany of injuries to the child, including bruises and bite marks too numerous to count all over his body and lacerations to his rectum that required colostomy surgery. The child spent more than a week in hospital following the sur- gery and had to be force-fed anti- HIV drugs, the judge noted. The little boy wore a colostomy bag for five months. The judge also slammed the child’s mother, who on the day the assault occurred chose to leave the child alone with her boyfriend while she stayed at the scene of an all-night party at which copious amounts of booze and drugs were consumed. With credit for time served since his arrest last year -- the young man turned himself in at a po- lice station the day the assault oc- curred, telling police he needed to be arrested -- the actual prison term will amount to five years and eight months. The judge cited dim prospects for rehabilitation for the young man, who dropped out of school in Grade 10 and has never held a steady job. But Canadian pop veteran David Usher says the fact that he’s constantly penning lyrics means the records flow much faster -- six solo efforts in 10 years, to be exact. “I don’t stop writing, I guess it’s become part of me,” he said during a phone interview with This Week in the midst of a cross-Canada tour to promote his latest release. “I’m always writing songs. I mean even right now, I just wrote another song on tour. I think the business isn’t used to it. People are used to an album every three years from an artist.” When Usher cozies up to the mic in Oshawa on Oct. 25, he’ll be making history as one of the first performers to grace the stage of the newly restored Regent The- atre. Fellow Canadian artists Dr. Draw and Leahy are also on tap for the opening night gala. Thinking back over a decade of solo tours plus years fronting ’90s rock band Moist, the Juno- winning singer can’t remember precisely when he last played in Oshawa, but is sure he’s been here before and is looking forward to making a return. In fact, he’s thrilled to be in Canada, period. Usher spent the past four years living in New York City and just recently moved back to Montreal, where he recorded his sixth solo record --’Wake up and Say Good- bye’ -- his first self-produced proj- ect. “We took over an apartment in Montreal and we put in a studio and essentially just lived there for a month,” he said. “It was a really fun way to make a record.” He describes the latest release as more “aggressive” than its pre- decessors, saying the tone of the songs changed as he and the band started touring with them. “The beat started to speed up and the energy started to increase as we played the songs live,” Usher said. Right now, his favourite new song is ‘When it Hurts’, featur- ing Montreal cellist Jorane, but he said it changes often as he gets a chance to perform songs live and take in the audience response. Feedback from fans and an on- going dialogue with them has be- come an increasingly important part of Usher’s creative process. A couple of years ago he decided to beef up his online presence and is now active on Facebook and MySpace, as well as maintaining a blog on his website, which also features a busy fan forum. He updates the blog regularly and posts on Facebook often, re- sponding to questions from fans and asking for their input on things like set lists for upcoming shows. “It’s interesting,” he said. “The connection is much more direct between myself and my commu- nity and it sort of leaves out a lot of the other things like mass media. We talk to each other directly.” “When the record came out, I didn’t really need to wait for re- views or sales numbers to find out what the feeling was in the community. You can find out im- mediately what people think be- cause there’s already an interac- tion going on.” For more on tour dates, the new album and David Usher’s blog, check out www.davidusher.com. The Whitby-based band played festivals, recorded another video, planned a Canadian tour and watched its album and video do well across the country. And the band really enjoyed it all, said band member Charlie Royal, who handles lead vocals along with Cole Martin. The group, which also includes bassist Dan Bradimore, drummer Kevin Walsh and guitarist Buddy Taylor, played the Great Canadian Steak Cook-off on July 26 at Hey- denshore Pavilion in Whitby. With its blend of punk, rock and hip hop, flavoured with a lit- tle Latin sound, the band made its second appearance on CITY- TV’s Breakfast Television, played a concert at the Opera House in Toronto, the Cutting Edge festival in Grand Bend and the Rock the Mill Festival in Cambridge. Hello Beautiful! also shot a video of the song, ‘Saint Andrew’s Bridge’. Another video, ‘Virginia Symphony’, about the Virginia Tech shootings in the United States, made it to No. 3 on Much On Demand’s video list. “We are all so, so happy about that,” Royal said. “We’re over the moon.” The group started in 2004, through Martin, Walsh and Taylor, who met in Whitby’s punk scene. Bradimore and Royal joined later. Hello Beautiful! won Durham’s Bandwarz and last fall captured best rock album from the Durham Region Music Society. It’s put out two albums, the self-titled EP in December 2006 and ‘Soundtrack for Scenario’ in April 2007. Royal said ‘Soundtrack for Sce- nario’ is a big seller locally. Check it out at www.myspace.com/hel- lobeautifulspace. For young people hoping to make it in the music business, he has some advice. “You’ve got to work super hard. The better things become for you, you have to work even harder. Be honest with yourself but always dream,” he said. “If you can per- ceive it, you can achieve it.” Thanks, Barney PICKERING — When he played a concert in Pickering recently, musi- cian Barney Bentall also took part in an autism fundraiser. The 22-year-old defenceman, entering his junior season with the Niagara University (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) Purple Eagles, was named as a co-captain of the men’s hock- ey team this season. It’s a role he relishes for the 2008-09 collegiate campaign. “It’s always an honour, especially with the group of guys we have in the locker room here,” said An- nesley over the phone. “Any one of the 25 guys on our team could have been named a captain, so it was an even bigger honour for me.” Annesley served as team captain dur- ing back-to- back seasons while patrol- ling the blue line for the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Pickering Panthers, his final season being in 2005-06. And, as a previous cap- tain of his junior team, he says he’s no stranger to having an increased role on the team. “You get more responsibility, but it’s not a burden. You do the same things and act like a leader to the younger guys coming in.” The Purple Eagles started the current season as the odds-on fa- vourite to repeat as College Hock- ey Ameri- ca (CHA) champs, with the pre-sea- son polls put- ting Niagara at the top of the heap. The 5-foot, 10-inch, 185-pound rear- guard, however, is cautious regard- ing the team’s early-season raves, saying the Purple Eagles have to go out on the ice and prove they’re the best in the conference again this year. “In the pre-season polls we’re favoured to win the CHA again this year, but that’s only on paper. Hopefully, we can repeat as cham- pions and go to the NCAA tourna- ment this year,” said Annesley, who was also named to the pre-season all-CHA team in the polls. The Purple Eagles started its 2008-09 season rather slowly, earning a tie in their first three games before a much-needed 4-3 victory over Clarkson on home ice at the Dwyer Arena on Saturday. Annesley explains that, as defend- ing conference champs, all teams will bring their ‘A’ games to the ice against them this season. “Obviously every team in our di- vision is going to want to beat us, so we’re going to have a target on our chests.” Last season was almost a com- ing out party for Annesley, who excelled in every statistical catego- ry, notching career highs in goals (seven) and assists (12) and points (19) as a blue-liner. He was also named to the all-CHA all-star team last season. Away from the rink, Annesley also excelled, making the CHA’s all-academic team last season. He’s currently studying marketing at Niagara, where he registered an extremely high 3.72 grade point av- erage. He notes his coaches have stressed doing well in the class- room in addition to performing well on the rink. “You have to stay on top of it,” says Annesley of his school work- load. “The coaches really stress school first, to get a degree and have something to fall back on later Ajax’s Annesley named captain of Niagara Purple Eagles AJ Groen/ News Advertiser photo Dribbling on past her defender WHITBY — Notre Dame’s Catherine Bougoulias flies by Sinclair’s Katelynn McConnell during LOSSA ‘AAAA’ senior girls’ basketball action at the Whitby school on Monday. The 59-year-old Oshawa native went wire to wire on his horse Tribal Chief to prevail over seven other hall of fame jockeys during a well-received prelude to next weekend’s Breeders’ Cup. The win, coming 10 years after he retired, went officially into the books, as the race was specially approved for legalized parimutuel wagering. And, while it’s just one of an as- tonishing 6,450 career victories, it holds a special a place in his heart. “It was like winning a million dol- lar race, I’ll tell you,” Hawley said during an interview from California. “It was just being in the race with these guys, it was quite an honour to be a part of it. To win the race was a huge bonus, that’s for sure.” Hawley, who had a reputation for holding leads, defeated fellow greats Chris McCarron, Pat Day, Julie Krone, Jerry Bailey, Jacinto Vasquez, Angel Cordero Jr. and Gary Stevens. Tribal Chief paid $7.80, $4 and $3.20 as the 5-2 favourite. Hawley said he had plenty of work to do to get back into racing shape. Fortunately, he lives right across from Oshawa’s Windfields Farm, where he had his first job and still has close connections. So, in addi- tion to working out in the gym, he had access to horses. “Having Windfields Farm right there was great,” said Hawley, who went from 122 pounds to 110 in about six months. “I got out on horses four or five times a week and the weight just flew off.” Hawley, a member of sev- eral halls of fame, raced for the first time in 1968 before breaking onto the scene in a big way in 1969, riding 230 winners, the most that year of any apprentice jockey in North America. He went on to race in the United States, where he led all jockeys in victories in 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1976. Hawley twice won the Lou Marsh Award, in 1973 and 1976, as Canada’s top athlete and was decorated with the Order of Canada in 1976, the country’s highest individual civilian honour for outstanding accomplish- ments by a citizen. He now works in the media department at Woodbine in Toronto and recently moved back to Oshawa from Pickering. After initially having some difficulty adapting to the higher tempo of the games, he’s settled into the college game and has flour- ished. And, seeing different parts of the country, making friends and earning an edu- cation have also been benefi- cial over the past two years. Niagara University sports, especially hockey at Dwyer Arena, is well-supported on campus and he enjoys play- ing in front of large and vocal crowds. “We definitely have sup- port. We sold out on Friday and Saturday so, definitely, there’s a good atmosphere in there,” he said. Following graduation, An- nesley says he wants to leave all options opens. He may opt to play hockey professionally either in North America or in Europe. He may also go to graduate school after earn- ing his degree in marketing. photo courtesy of CSI Photography Niagara University Purple Eagles’ defenceman Ryan Annesley, right, was named a co-captain for the team this season.
