Owner says Pickering A thletic Centre can operate near water pollution plant By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — There’s no rea- son the Pickering Athletic Cen- tre can’t operate near the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP), if the Waterfront Trail can, says the property’s owner. “That’s recreational use. That’s not just a sidewalk,” Dennis Large said, adding it’s difficult to find a suitable gymnastics facility in Pickering. The Pickering Athletic Cen- tre, at Squires Beach and McKay Roads, has been running in its current location since January but has been serving Pickering for years. The location is cur- rently zoned for yard storage and heavy manufacturing, but Mr. Large wants to get an amendment to the bylaw in order to allow for a karate club, soccer club, dance studio and gymnastics facility. But, the Region and Pickering City staff oppose the application. The Ministry of the Environment says buildings must be at least 150 metres from the WPCP and the building is within that distance. They found there could be prob- lems with noise and odour from the plant and also noted several site function issues would have to be addressed to accommodate recreational uses. But, Mr. Large said the odour, seemingly the only problem, can only be detect- ed from outside the building and the ministry just doesn’t want to deal with it. Plus, he said, if the club is unsuccessful because of the odour “it’s our problem, not the municipality’s.” Mr. Large also said there is no potential danger from the plant, and the Region did say in its re- port the potential for significant contamination is low. His wife and co-owner of PAC, Laurie Large, said facilities do exist next to other water treat- ment facilities, such as the one on Victoria Park Road in Toronto. “The full-time staff at the buildings across and beside us Smelly situation in Pickering ✦ See City, Page 4 durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 2 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 17, 2008 Central Duffi ns Creek Collector Sanitary Sewer from Rossland Road to Taunton Road Work required to facilitate the construction of a trunk sanitary sewer on Valley Farm Road south of Rossland Road, along the Hydro easement and Tillings Road, terminating at Taunton Road, in the City of Pickering INTRODUCTION The Region of Durham is initiating a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study to assess alternatives for the future work required to construct the Central Duffi n Collector trunk sanitary sewer in the City of Pickering as described above. Opponent claims ‘invisible’ riders By Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com AJAX — Route 222 will continue to run accordingly to Hoile. Durham Region Transit executive com- mittee on Wednesday voted to keep Route 222 as it is, with a loop down Hoile Drive during the morning and afternoon rush hours. Wayne and Sandra Cassidy had petitioned to have the route changed so buses wouldn’t be travelling down Hoile and by their house. They opposed the bus because of noise, odours and the potential safety hazard of having the vehicles travelling down the nar- row street. Several residents opposed the move, how- ever, saying the walk to get to the bus would be too long and inconvenient, especially in the winter. Ted Galinis, general manager of the DRT, said in an interview the issue is now fin- ished. “TEC (the transit executive committee) has the authority of the commission. It’s dealt with now,” Mr. Galinis said. “Our re- port, we said we can’t support the justifica- tion for the removal.” The service on Hoile began in July of 2006 and opponents have been trying since then to have the bus removed, a staff report to the committee noted. The Hoile route, which only runs in the morning and afternoon rush hours, “is car- rying 23 passengers a day on the loop,” Mr. Galinis said. “There has been a slight drop in ridership consistent with the summer seasonal de- cline, however, in total the route is exceed- ing the service standard for a local route,” the staff report stated, noting that applies to the whole route and not just the Hoile loop. The route “is a good performer and board- ings on the Hoile loop during seasonal peak months exceed the service standards,” the report added. Ensuring there’s a bus stop in urban areas within 400 metres is “the absolute maxi- mum,” he said, adding the target is trying for stops within 200 metres. The distance from the corner of Aud- ley Road and Ashbury Boulevard and the southern end of the loop is 560 metres. It was a positive that “a number of grass- roots customers came out. We’re hearing people speaking about the carbon foot- print,” he said. John Fisico supported the Cassidys’ re- quest. “It’s a slam dunk. I’d rather have more peacefulness than convenience,” he said. Wayne Cassidy questioned the number of passengers riding on the bus each day, say- ing, “I’m there every day at 5:30 and I’m not seeing anyone get on the bus.” The riders, he said, “must be wearing ‘in- visible cloaks’.” -- with files from the Torstar news service Hoile route to remain unchanged THE LATEST IN DURHAM’S COMMUNITIESnewsdurhamregion.com HERONGATE DINNER THEATRE 2885 Altona Rd., Pickering www.herongate.com LET US ENTERTAIN YOU!IT’S A HIT! Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean is concerned about the possibility of kids losing out in the end and council agreed the gym is advantageous to the City. The facil- ity, Ms. Large said, has 700 mem- bers and offers gymnastics, tram- poline, power tumbling, dance, karate and a Special Olympics Pro- gram. It also has provincial and national competitive programs. “So there are 700 kids who are going to be displaced, put off pro- grams,” Coun. McLean said. Chief Administrative Officer Tom Quinn said he doesn’t recall odour being an issue when discussing the waterfront trail in the past. “I think this has everything to do with the EA,” he said, referring to the plant’s environmental assess- ment currently underway. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 17, 2008 durhamregion.com Conservative Rick Johnson ran out of time T here just wasn’t enough time to get his message out, said Con- servative candidate Rick Johnson after losing the Ajax-Pickering riding Tuesday night. So after a short, 37-day campaign, he lost his opportunity to move from regional to federal politics. Liberal incumbent Mark Holland held onto his riding by just a few thousand votes – 21,607 votes and 44.3 per cent of the vote compared to Mr. Johnson’s 18,471 and 37.8 per cent. It was a tighter race than many prob- ably expected considering all the good things people say about Mr. Holland. In fact, I think I’ve only actually heard one or two people, at most, say they don’t like him. The point is, you have to wonder if the short campaign hurt or helped the Conservatives. Mr. Johnson’s campaign manager, Tom Simpson, was clearly disappoint- ed when the gap between his candidate and Mr. Holland was looking too large to fill. Mr. Johnson was the right person for the job, he said. As the ringing phones died down inside campaign headquarters at the stone mansion on Brock Road and Hwy. 2 in Pickering, Mr. Simpson noted Mr. Holland had a five-year lead on Mr. Johnson, who only had weeks to get his message out. You could argue Mr. Johnson’s had 17 years to display his capabilities as a regional councillor for Pickering, and therefore, had much more of a head start in the election than Mr. Holland. The Conservatives had to have known what they were doing by posting such a tight election date. They wouldn’t have called it if they didn’t think they could gain more seats. Maybe holding a lon- ger campaign could have caused simi- lar results as the provincial election did for the Conservatives. That election should have been a sure thing for party leader John Tory, but the more he talk- ed, the less people wanted to support him. Things seemed to go in that direc- tion for the federal Conservatives as well. Early in the campaign, it looked like the party could have a majority, but as time went by, more people again became turned off by party leader Ste- phen Harper. It’s just a good thing for the Conser- vatives that Liberal leader Stephane Dion is such a dud. Next election, which hopefully won’t be for another four years, will probably see Mr. Holland win more votes. Crystal Crimi’s column appears every four weeks. E-mail her at ccrimi@durhamregion. com Did short campaign hurt or help the Conservatives in federal election campaign? Climate, place in world also must be part of agenda Now the real work begins for Ste- phen Harper and his Conserva- tive minority government. Bolstered by a dramatically increased seat count but still short of the majority he badly wanted, Mr. Harper will pre- sumably continue to govern as he has since he won power in January 2006. As if he has a majority. And it’s unlikely the combined forces of the opposition will do much of any- thing to stop him. The Official Opposition Liberals are in disarray today, down to 76 seats, a drop of 27 from the number of ridings they won in 2006. No doubt they will look at replacing the disastrous Stephane Dion. Such a leadership contest will take time, energy and money and will prove a distraction as the Conservatives concentrate on work in Parliament. Who will be the next Liberal leader and chief contender for Mr. Harper in the next fed- eral election? Will it be Bob Rae, Michael Ignatieff, Gerard Kennedy, Ken Dryden or someone else not considered in the last race for the leadership? We’ll see. There will be no appetite for another federal election for a good two to three years in the Liberal camp. And without solid Liberal support, the NDP and Bloc Quebecois cannot take the Conserva- tives out. That leaves Mr. Harper with plenty on his plate in the years to come. He will have to aggressively deal with the assault on our manufacturing indus- try and the decimation of our economy. The decision to purchase $25 billion in mortgage assets to allow banks to free up capital is a start, but the government will have to get creative in finding solu- tions to make sure our economy remains vibrant. Job creation is essential and investment in key sectors of the econo- my will be vital to make sure we continue to grow, or at least keep the wheels turn- ing in spite of a worldwide downturn. There is also work to do on the envi- ronment and the go slow approach favoured by Mr. Harper will surely receive criticism by the opposition par- ties, which all want quicker fixes. Agreement on withdrawal from Afghanistan by 2011 has broad-based support, but Mr. Harper must continue to make sure Canada has a place at the international table in these uncertain times. While it’s still a Conservative minority, it will be a challenging agenda for the government. Crystal Crimi Regional chairman should be more understanding of police To the editor: On becoming a member of the Cana- dian Armed Forces, an oath of allegiance is taken which demands the utmost dedi- cation and devotion to duty. Durham Regional Police officers also take an oath to protect the public and are just as dedicated. The Durham Regional Police Service contract expired Dec. 31, 2007. The date is now Oct. 14, 2008. The Police Services Board is comprised of six plus Regional Chairman Roger Anderson. The presence of Mr. Anderson with his arrogant manner is not conducive to reaching a satisfactory outcome. What I find puzzling is that Mr. Anderson, with his experience as a police officer, service concluded in 1988, should behave this way. To serve and protect is a noble act. Policing is deemed an essential service. Therefore, they cannot strike and are subjected to the whims of the politicians. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 17, 2008 PAGE 7 A/Pdurhamregion.com Chairman insists he did nothing wrong By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The head of Durham’s police association is calling it “distasteful” and “dis- respectful.” The man chairing the committee cur- rently attempting to work out a contract with Durham’s cops insists it’s “not a big deal.” But an incident involving a Durham po- lice officer and Durham Region chairman Roger Anderson Wednesday morning left cops fuming, and Mr. Anderson insisting he’d done nothing wrong. It began Wednesday morning at Durham Region headquarters in Whitby. A number of officers, led by Durham Regional Po- lice Association president Doug Cavanaugh, were there for a meeting of the police ser- vices board. The cops, who earlier this month began job action to protest the slow pace of contract talks, were outside the building, wearing ball caps and handing out leaflets outlining their concerns. Along came Mr. Anderson, a for- mer cop who is head of the negotiating com- mittee for Durham’s police services board. An officer extended a leaflet to Mr. An- derson who did not accept it. The envelope- sized piece of paper fluttered to the ground. According to the officer who attempted to hand over the leaflet, “He (Mr. Anderson) threw it on the ground and said, ‘Pick up your garbage’.” Officers were still discussing the incident later as they filed into a committee room for the police services board meeting. When Mr. Anderson was asked about the incident he was unapologetic and said he hadn’t dropped anything. He said the officer dropped the leaflet. “I told him to pick up his papers that were on the ground,” he said. “It’s not a big deal. “The fact is when they’re on municipal property and they drop something on the ground, they’re going to pick it up.” Mr. Cavanaugh, who has launched a PR campaign focusing on Mr. Anderson as he calls for a contract and more frontline of- ficers, expressed dismay at the exchange. “It’s distasteful,” he said. “It’s disrespect- ful.” Mr. Cavanaugh said he hoped the in- cident wouldn’t affect contract talks sched- uled to resume this Friday. Mr. Anderson said he too is hoping to ad- vance the negotiations. 401 Reynolds Street,Whitby Ontario L1N 3W9 ◆905.668.3358 ◆www.castle-ed.com See the School in action •Talk to our students, our staff, our parents and our Alumna •Discover what Trafalgar Castle School can offer you •Learn why Trafalgar Girls Succeed in a community like no other •Give your daughter the positive learning environments, the sense of community & school spirit, and the opportunity to become a strong, independent thinker •Provide her with the possibility to reach her fullest potential Trafalgar Girls Succeed! About half of those calls turn into investi- gations of child abuse and neglect -- 3,858 in 2007. The numbers may seem high, but there are many cases that fly under the radar, de- spite the fact the public has a legal responsi- bility to report any suspicion of abuse. “People are sometimes concerned it’s none of their business, or that they don’t have all the facts,” said DCAS executive di- rector Wanda Secord. “But, that’s OK. We have trained staff that are there to help. They can sort out the information. The most important thing to do is call if you have a concern.” That’s the message DCAS and Durham Regional Police are trying to get out during the month of October, which is Child Abuse Prevention Month in Ontario. This year’s campaign reminds the pub- lic and community professionals that child abuse prevention and early intervention are key, and that everyone has a legal and moral duty to report suspected abuse or neglect. As in past years, Children’s Aid Society branch- es across the province will be using purple ribbons and purple bracelets as symbols of the campaign. Reporting has improved in recent years, but still isn’t where officials want it to be, Ms. Secord said. A survey conducted in Durham Region in 2007 showed 85 per cent of people were aware of the legal duty to report, but only 54 per cent said they would report suspected abuse without concrete proof and 60 per cent said they would have difficulty report- ing someone they knew. The survey results indicated the leading reason for not reporting was fear of retribu- tion, while others included not knowing where to call and a belief that the situation was “not my business.” “The challenge is the incidents that are reported, and the incidents that aren’t re- ported,” said DRPS Chief Mike Ewles. “Sometimes, through an investigation, we’re discovering abuse after the 10th or 11th incident. We need to be preventing these incidents all together, or at least intervening early. It’s our collective responsibility to look after our children.” For more information on DCAS, visit www.durhamcas.ca. To learn more about identifying and reporting child abuse, check out www.useyourvoice.ca. Highlights There are many signs that could indicate abuse or neglect, including obvious ones like injuries, withdrawal or unwashed clothes. But there are plenty of subtle signs, too, and recognizing them can be key to early intervention. Here are some examples of subtle signs -- visit www. useyourvoice.ca to learn more. Physical abuse: - Child wears long sleeves/long pants even in warm weather - Excessive crying or anxiety when other children cry - Recurrent nightmares or disturbed sleep patterns - Behaviour extremes — aggressiveness or withdrawal - Whispering speech - Loss of appetite or excessive appetite Emotional abuse: - Sudden change in self-confidence - Headaches or stomachaches with no medical cause - Abnormal fears, increased nightmares - Failure to gain weight (especially in infants) - Desperately affectionate behaviour - Speech disorders (stuttering, stammer- ing) CAS, police remind public of duty to report child abuse Money raised for bursaries and endowments DURHAM — The Legacy Gala is helping hundreds of post-sec- ondary students create their own legacy. The Durham College and Uni- versity of Ontario Institute of Tech- nology’s (UOIT) 2008 Legacy Gala raised $250,000 to support student bursaries and endowments. The money comes from spon- sors, auction donors, partners and other guests at the event, and in- cludes $125,000 in matching funds through the provincial govern- ment’s Ontario Trust for Student Support. “Ongoing support for this event ensures financial barriers to a post-secondary education will continue to be broken down,” said UOIT president Dr. Ronald Bord- essa. “It ensures many more young men and women will be able to access UOIT’s leading-edge learn- ing environment and pursue the kinds of innovative programs that place them in great demand upon graduation.” Featuring an Argentina theme, the seventh annual Legacy Gala was Sept. 12 at Tosca Banquet Hall and Conference Centre. Hundreds of guests attended, including busi- ness and corporate leaders, politi- cians and other community lead- ers, students, staff and administra- tion from both schools. “Durham College would like to thank everyone for joining us to celebrate these treasured part- nerships that are so intrinsic to our students’ success,” said Don Lovisa, Durham College present. “Once again, countless business- es, community partners and indi- viduals have demonstrated their incredible generosity. Their con- tributions have made the gala a tremendous success and will pro- vide a helping hand to students as they pursue their studies and gain the market-ready skills needed to attain rewarding careers and make a difference in the world.” The gala is held each September to raise funds for students attend- ing the UOIT and Durham Col- lege. It is designed to relieve stu- dents’ financial burden and help them pursue their post-secondary educational goals. DURHAM — Durham’s 302 occasional Catholic teachers have tentatively reached a new four-year contract agreement. The deal between the Durham Catholic District School Board and the Durham unit of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association will be presented to occasional teachers for ratification on Oct. 23. Trustees will vote at their Oct. 27 board meeting. “The board is extremely pleased to have reached its first settlement of the existing seven collective agreements which are sub- ject to renewal under the provincial frame- work,” said Pickering Trustee Jim McCaf- ferty, the board’s chairman. “I congratulate both negotiating committees for their col- laborative approach to resolving issues of mutual interest, which resulted in a fair col- lective agreement consistent with the min- istry of education’s expectations relative to the provisions of the provincial framework agreement.” Details of the tentative settle- ment, which is effective Sept. 1 to Aug. 31, 2012, will be kept secret pending ratification by both parties. “The Durham Occasional Teachers are pleased to have successfully conducted ne- gotiations for a collective agreement which addresses local issues and enhances our working relationship with the board over the next four years,” said Bill Stratton, OECTA Occasional Teachers Durham Local presi- dent. Less kids in class last summer DURHAM — Summer school numbers were down in the Dur- ham District School Board. About 4,000 students went to 2008 summer school programs this year, seven per cent less than in 2007, said a staff report present- ed at the board’s Oct. 6 standing committee meeting. About 3,200 students attended secondary summer school pro- grams, 4.5 per cent less than in 2007. Secondary initiatives, such as credit recovery and after-school numeracy and literacy upgrading courses, contributed to lower en- rolment in secondary summer up- grading courses, states the report. Grade 9 and Grade 10 math were the most popular courses, with enrolment rising from 184 to 187. Two credit co-op programs had 117 registered students, and 43 students completed diploma requirements. At the elementary level, about 805 students finished school pro- grams, down 13.5 per cent. The Getting Ready for High School Program also took a hit, with participants going from 459 in 2007, to 390 in 2008. Numbers at each school were up, but only eight sites were able to offer it this year, compared to 11 last year. By Melissa Mancini mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A local entre- preneur successfully slayed two dragons on national television. The “dragons” in question are big-shot investors on the CBC show Dragon’s Den. Res- taurant owner Darryl Koster faced them on Monday night and they bought into his south- ern barbecue sauce idea to the tune of $200,000. It was personality that got Mr. Koster the deal, even though the contract will probably never see the light of day. For unspecified reasons the deal with the investors from Dragon’s Den has not yet been completed and will not be done in the foreseeable future, Mr. Koster said. There has been some serious interest shown by several large restaurant and retail chains, he said. “We’re still looking for seri- ous investors,” he said. His appearance on national television generated some at- tention only a day after the pro- gram aired. Mr. Koster had four parties call the morning after his television debut, interested in making orders for sauce, he said. Mr. Koster owns a food pro- duction company and res- taurant called Buster Rhino’s, which sells barbecue sauces, spices, rubs and meats. His Whitby-based company made $536,000 last year and is on track to do more than $800,000 in business this year, Mr. Koster told the five potential investors while addressing them on cam- era. The actual pitch and inter- view lasted about 40 minutes, he said. Only seven to eight minutes of footage actually made it to air. Events on set were very dif- ferent then they looked on TV, Mr. Koster said. His wife Beth spoke often when they were in front of the panel, he said. But the clips that made it on air all had her standing silently next to Mr. Koster. Mr. Koster entered the den asking for $200,000 for 25 per cent of his company. The dragons tried his prod- uct and gave it rave reviews on camera. “Oh baby, oh,” said Kevin O’Leary, who sold his software company for $3.7 billion. “That’s got a burn, but that’s got a great burn,” said W. Brett Wilson an investor with stakes in industries ranging from agriculture to sports and entertainment. Mr. Koster was very sick when he presented to the dragons. He had a high fever, he said. Some of the potential inves- tors were scared off by the diffi- culty of the sauce business. Mr. O’Leary and two of the other dragons, Jim Treliving and Ar- lene Dickinson decided they didn’t want what Mr. Koster was offering. “Love you but hate your busi- ness,” Mr. O’Leary said. In the end Mr. Wilson and Robert Herjavec offered Mr. Koster a deal of $200,000 for 51 per cent of the company. “I get all the free sauce,” Mr. Herjavec quipped as he shook Mr. Koster’s hand. At the end of the segment, Mr. Herjavec said Mr. Koster taught the audience something about presenting on the show. “It’s rarely about the product it’s about the individual,” he said, complimenting Mr. Koster’s at- titude under pressure. Mr. Koster said he has two suggestions for business own- ers tackling a table of investors, whether on air or in a board room: know your business in- side out and don’t get defensive if they don’t love your business as much as you do. To try Mr. Koster’s products you can visit his restaurant at 2001 Thickson Rd. unit 7 in Whitby. Hardiman Mount & Associates Insurance is operated by Johnson Inc., a licensed insurance broker. The Safe Communities of Pickering-Ajax (SCOPA) presented OPG with its Ambassador for Safety Business Partner Award during a Oct. 9 conference in Ajax. This is the second year SCOPA has presented the award, giving it last year to the Durham District School Board. “Their commitment to safety and protection of the environment is un- compromising and absolute,” said SCOPA’s Jim McKinnon of OPG. OPG has “shown a strong com- mitment to our board” by serving on SCOPA since its founding, he said. Also, OPG has provided financial contributions to support SCOPA’s leadership, Mr. McKinnon said. “They have assisted with the cost of the Heroes program,” he said. “This is a program that teaches youth about Smart Risk and is of- fered to all high schools in the Ajax- Pickering area.” The conference was hosted by the Industrial Accident Prevention As- sociation and attracted about 300 people to the Deer Creek Golf and Banquet facility. The company has “demonstrated a leadership role in supporting inju- ry prevention and safety promotion programs,” he said. In 2007, OPG provided financial aid and “in-kind assistance” to more than 900 initiatives in their host communities through the compa- ny’s corporate citizenship program. Included in the initiatives was 270 to health and safety organizations, Mr. McKinnon said. “Last but not least, and I admire this, OPG believes that a target of zero injuries is achievable. This is not only good business sense, it shows a commitment to protecting their employees and sending them home as healthy as they arrived at work,” Mr. McKinnon said. Working with organizations like SCOPA “affords us the opportunity to show our shared values,” OPG’s Olwen Gower said in an interview, “Safety is an ingrained corner- stone” for the company, said Greg Jackson, the manager of safety strat- egies. “Our safety philosophy applies not only to nuclear production, but also with our workers,” he said. PICKERING TOWN CENTRE 905-420-8000 durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 20 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 17, 2008 By Melissa Mancini mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The first step to getting back into the workforce is believing you can. That was the message au- thor and “courage coach” Cate Gibson told over 200 women at the Independent Women of the Future conference in Ajax on Wednesday. “The world can weigh us down and we can lose our way,” Ms. Gibson said to the crowd of ca- reer-seekers. Ms. Gibson talked about the darkest time in her life, when she was in the midst of a rocky relationship and work was par- ticularly stressful. “But then the light came in,” she said. The Durham Region Local Training Board hosted the con- ference to inspire women who are looking to return to the work- force. Those looking for work should look at the situation as an adven- ture, a chance to figure out who they are, not something pain- ful like a root canal, Ms. Gibson said. Ms. Gibson found the light in her life by taking stress leave from work and eventually end- ing her emotionally abusive re- lationship. Her journey helped her to find herself, she said. The journey can be a lonely one, so she said the audience should try to remember the peo- ple in their lives who give un- conditional love. Surround your- self with people who are there to help, not hurt, Ms. Gibson said. “Are you making sure that the people around are your support people?” she asked. “Because if you are not, they’re holding you back.” It’s important to put a zoom lens on the things that are going well in life and to be really hon- est with yourself. Most impor- tantly, stay positive, Ms. Gibson said. “You are already a power- house,” she said. And she had the audience of women repeat that mantra: “I’m a powerhouse, I’m a power- house, I’m a powerhouse.” Until every woman in the room was chanting along. A lifelong painter and early member of Ajax Creative Arts, she draws upon her experience as she advises young artists just starting out, saying, “don’t get discouraged and don’t give up.” With Ajax Cre- ative Arts celebrating its 30th Fall Show and Sale this weekend, it’s safe to say that Masters knows a thing or two about tenacity in the arts. A longtime Ajax resident, she joined ACA in the late 1960s to meet with fellow artists. At the time, she most enjoyed painting rural scenes such as local land- scapes, barns and older houses. The trend has continued and now also includes florals and still lifes, stemming from her affinity for sketching any scenes that catch her eye. Originally, ACA was informal and simply an occasional gather- ing between artists to chat about new techniques and styles and they didn’t have an official meet- ing location until 1968. “It was a little red school house on Pickering Beach Road - and it truly had bats in the belfry,” Mas- ters said of their first home. “A member went to remove a paint- ing from the wall and a bat flew out from behind it. Needless to say, we were all startled, but it was prob- ably more scared of us than we were of it.” The tough troupe braved the bats, but had other, less-than- ideal conditions to bear. Masters remembers the rustic state of the old school house and its lack of modern amenities, even noting that they had to bring water from home to enjoy the luxury of coffee. “In the winter, we’d be wearing mitts and toques to keep warm,” she said. “We didn’t want to give up our meetings, but we had to move to a new location!” Soon, ACA moved to another temporary spot before finding its current home at the Village Com- munity Centre in Pickering Vil- lage. Members now meet for lunches twice a week to work on their art or catch up on gossip - just like old times. ACA recently recognized Mas- ters as an Honorary Member, citing her support and ongoing contribu- tions to the club. “It also means they have to sa- lute me when I walk in the door,” Masters joked. All kidding aside, the skill and artistic achievements the self- taught Masters has amassed are something to salute. Fellow club members recognized her talent by selecting her painting, ‘Silent Sentinel,’ as the door prize for the Show and Sale. Masters is excited about and proud of the show. “The Annual Fall Show and Sale is a wonderful way to show the public what we are doing,” she said. “There are about 50 artists so there is a lot of art to be seen. It’s all original; there are no prints except for small cards. It really is a great opportunity for the artists and the public. The art is high quality and very reasonably priced.” Masters also noted the variety of artwork available and encouraged all artists to work with the medium he or she prefers. “ I started out in oils and tried about everything before settling into wa- tercolours,” she said. “There’s no reason to follow the trends. Just keep on practising, paint or draw what you like, and do your own thing!” Ajax Creative Arts’ Annual Fall Show and Sale is Friday, Oct. 17 to Sunday, Oct. 19 at 22 Sher- wood Rd. W. in Pickering Village, Ajax. For more information, visit the Ajax Creative Arts website at http://www.steinhausstudio.com/ AjaxCreativeArts.html. Performers to team up on stage for tomorrow’s show at community centre DURHAM — Three mu- sicians from the Canadian west sweep into town this weekend as the Vital Spark Folk Society opens its new season. Gary Fjellgaard and Saskia and Darrel will entertain at the Brooklin Community Centre, 45 Cassels Rd., Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. Fjellgaard, who bills himself “as Canadian as they come,” has been a touring musician for more than 30 years. Raised on the prairies, the award-winning sing- er/songwriter champions “vanishing values and the frontier spirit” in his west- ern roots music. He now lives in British Columbia with his family. “I’ve been in this busi- ness a long, long time,” he said in an interview, add- ing touring can take a lot out of a person. “But the time on stage is just worth it all. The music makes it worthwhile. There’s a lot of magic in this business.” His songs reflect his background, whether it be his years growing up on the prairies or his relation- ship with his wife of 52 years. “A lot of my music re- flects my experiences,” he said. Fjellgaard said he’s toured often with Saskia and Darrel. They’ve even learned each others’ songs and will appear on stage together during concerts. Darrel De La Ronde and Saskia share a prairie an- cestry of Saskatchewan Metis and Dutch farm stock. They are singers and songwriters who sing and play contemporary and original folk songs. They call it prairie folk. Tickets for the concert are $20 each and are avail- able at Mitchell Brothers, 15 Church St., Brooklin, Lafontaine, 1100 Brock St. S., Whitby, The Pot- ting Bench, 30 King St. W., Bowmanville, or by call- ing Kerry in Newcastle at 905-987-4050 or Vicki in Oshawa at 905-432-3237. Yellowknife native hitting 100 bowling alleys in 100 days; makes stop in Ajax By Shawn Cayley scayley@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Last Thursday, Terry Burns made a stop in Os- hawa, the 29th on his great cross- Canada adventure. Last Friday, he was in Ajax for No. 30. Only 70 more to go. Burns, a 46-year-old civilian sup- ply technician for the Armed Forc- es, took a one-year leave of absence from his job in Yellowknife, N.W.T. and embarked on a 100-day tour of Canada where he will visit 100 dif- ferent bowling alleys in celebration of the 100th anniversary of five-pin bowling in this country. The idea came about a few years ago when he was driving out west. He stumbled across a group of cy- clists who were riding together in support of cancer. Then, an idea popped into his head. “The 100th anniversary of five pin was just around the corner, so I thought why not travel across Can- ada and let people know that it is the 100th anniversary,” said Burns. “It’s a Canadian culture. It was in- vented by a Canadian, in Canada and it’s only played in Canada now. It’s played in every province.” For Burns, who, as a military worker, has never lived in one place for more than seven years, this is a trip of a lifetime. “I am having a great vacation doing what I passionately love to do,” Burns, originally from Exeter, ON., said of bowling the five-pin lanes. To date, the trip has been every- thing he expected. Of course, that’s aside from the fact he is making the venture on his own. A few years back, Burns broached the topic of the trip with his wife Debbie. After some discussion, they figured why not take the trip. Burns pictured the two of them doing it together. Then Debbie was found to be suffering from a serious liver dis- ease and she died last year. “I’m a widower... which is one of the reasons I am doing the trip now,” he said. “It helps me grieve. That’s part of the reason I am on the trip and I know she is looking over my shoulder following me around.” Burns has also been followed around by various media outlets. And that’s quite alright with him. “It’s been great because all I want to do is create some more aware- ness for this great sport,” he said. “It’s such a blast to get out and bowl, whether it’s with the family, on your own or with a bunch of guys from work.” His venture started Sept. 11 in St. John’s, Nfld and will conclude Dec. 19 in Vernon, B.C. After that, Burns is leaving his options open as to what will be next in his life. “I don’t know if I’ll go back Yel- lowknife or what... maybe I’ll move somewhere else, maybe buy a bowl- ing alley,” he said with a laugh. That might not be a bad invest- ment. After all it would cut down on travel time. Bowler Burns enjoying trip of a lifetime ‘I’m a widower...which is one of the reasons I am doing the trip now. It helps me grieve. That’s part of the reason I am on the trip and I know she is looking over my shoulder following me around.’ — TERRY BURNS, SPEAKING OF HIS LATE WIFE, DEBBIE ✦ Follow Terry Burns’ progress on his daily blog at www.c5pba.ca Howard triumphant in rink return By Jim Easson Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — Pickering’s Richard Hart was only too happy to move back to his vice position, allow- ing skip Glenn Howard to return to his former position in time to capture the BDO Curling Classic in Oakville last weekend. Howard returned for the Oakville Curling Club event after undergone hernia surgery on Sept. 19. He was originally scheduled to rejoin his Ontario champion team for the Masters of Curling in Wa- terloo from Nov. 12 to 16. He got back in the hack, however, two bonspiels earlier than expected. With Pickering resident Richard Hart back at vice, and the front end of Brent Laing, and Craig Sav- ill, the team won the BDO Curl- ing Classic and collected $15,000 for their success in this 32-team triple-knockout competition. Next, the Howard team heads to Portage, Man. from Oct. 24 to 27 for the 2008 Meyers Norris Penny Prairie Classic. The team has won it the past two years, so they hope to keep this streak alive. ••• Annandale Club curling is on again. Only practice time for Tues- day ladies’ league, and the Tues- day and Wednesday Men’s Com- petitive League this week. When the Mixed League takes to the ice Thursday, however, the games will count. On Wednesday, Oct. 15, there is an adult clinic scheduled with no signups. For the Oct. 25 clinic ap- proximately 25 curlers are signed up, and Joan O’Leary will serve as the convener. ••• A Club Coach Course that re- placed the Level 1 Technical Course is slated for Annandale on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18 and 19. Topics include role of the coach, organizational manage- ment, safety, warm-ups and cool- downs, curling delivery, strategy, brushing, ethical coaching, prac- tices, clinics, skill analysis, and special interest groups. At last count, 14 prospective club coaches are signed up to take the course. ••• Annandale’s first bonspiels are for the junior sets. The Little Rock Bonspiel is on Saturday, Nov 2. The following weekend, a bantam/ junior bonspiel goes on Saturday, Nov. 8. Drop by and see some of the youth curling. Here, assistant house league co-ordinator Vicki Cowie helps Vanessa Ferma try on some of the equipment. Pickering Swim Club’s Sprint Meet this weekend PICKERING — Six GTA swim teams will be in the water this weekend for the annual Pickering Swim Club Sprint Meet. Approximately 260 athletes are participating in the first swim meet on the PSC’s competitive calendar at the Pickering Recre- ation Complex pool. Swim clubs include the New- market Ducks, Aurora Selkies, Toronto Olympian Swim Team, Richmond Hill J-Dolphins, Quinte Dolphins Swim Club as well as the host Pickering Swim Club. Sponsored in part by East Side Mario’s-Pickering, the Sprint Meet gets underway Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan will officially open the meet. The Saturday afternoon session starts at 1:30 p.m. and continues throughout the afternoon. The meet continues on Sunday morning and wraps up later in the afternoon. The Pickering Recreation Com- plex is at 1867 Valley Farm Rd. Ajax-Pickering ringette gets grant to grow game Association receives $150,000 from Ontario Trillium Foundation DURHAM — The Ajax-Pickering Ringette Association received some help to grow the game in the two communities. The association was the recent recipient of a $150,000 grant, over three years, courtesy of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, which will aid the 40-year-old association on a number of fronts. The announcement of the grant was made in Pickering by Ajax- Pickering MPP Joe Dickson recent- ly. Vicki Derusha, representing Ajax-Pickering ringette, explained the money will help the association branch out in a number of ways to provide a solid ringette experience to the players within its program. “The grant will allow us to im- plement a Can-skate program, an equipment loan program, and will give us the means to share the rin- gette opportunity with our com- munity. This season, there will be more girls skating, having fun and playing ringette,” she said in a press release. In addition to the equipment loan program, which will allow youngsters to try the sport without the outlay of money for equipment, the money will also help the asso- ciation hire additional staff, as well as conducting an outreach program to the diverse communities within Ajax and Pickering. Derusha is encouraging all Ajax- Pickering youth to come out and try the sport this year. For more infor- mation, log on to www.ajaxringette. com or www.pickeringringette.ca.
