By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The cost of housing in Durham is ris- ing, with residents in the western municipalities pay- ing the most. In rental units, the average shelter cost is the high- est in Pickering, at a whopping $1,019, which is high- er than Toronto. Among homeowners, Ajax residents pay the most per month at an average cost of $1,526, data from the 2006 Statistics Canada census reveals. On the other hand, both renters and owners in Brock Township paid the least at $729 and $1,106 respectively, on average per month. Of the lakeshore municipalities, Oshawa had the cheapest rent at an average of $810 and the lowest average cost for hom- eowners at $1,163 per month. Roger Saunders, manager of policy planning and special studies for the Region’s planning department, said the difference between the communities is mar- ket demand. “The housing prices, not surprisingly, are much higher in the south than in the north and generally from west to east,” he said. Driving up prices, said Mr. Saunders, is a lack of supply in some communities such as Pickering. When the Seaton lands come online, he expects it to be popular. “When it finally gets off the ground, we expect the take-up there will be extremely fast because there’s a huge pent-up demand.” Of the GTA municipalities, Durham households paid the lowest average rent and the second low Housing costs rise in Durham See Average, page 4 Pickering may have to repave in Whitevale By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Parts of the 5th Concession remain closed to traffic following Wednesday afternoon’s downpour. “It’s like a patchwork quilt,” Chief Administrative Officer Tom Quinn said. And we’re even better today.” - Kerry Sanders Ajax-Pickering MP Mark Holland unhappy with accusations By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com AJAX — The Conser- vative Party is spending lavishly and wasting tax- payers’ dollars by sending attack flyers to Ajax and Pickering households, Mark Holland says. The Conservative Party has been distributing flyers to local households that depict the Ajax-Pickering MP on a milk carton with “Have you seen this man?” typed above his photo. It accuses Mr. Holland of being absent for votes on: lowering GST; new laws to fight gun crime, sexual predators and impaired drivers; and the 2008 bud- get. It further states he was last seen collecting $155,400 in salary. The other side is a survey ask- ing which party house- holds are supporting. “Not only are the fly- ers in bad taste and bla- tantly untrue; they are also a huge waste of taxpayer dollars,” Mr. Holland said. “The practice of using MP mailing privileges to smear their opponents in other ridings has to stop.” Mr. Holland said he was present and voted in support of the crime bill, along with all other Liberal MPs, which took place in November of 2007. For the others mentioned, he said he was there but abstained because he didn’t feel the issues were big enough to warrant an election. If the flyers questioned his abstaining, that would be a different story, he said. But, Conservative di- rector of communications Ryan Sparrow said even if Mr. Holland was pres- ent, abstaining “is just the same as not voting. “Mr. Holland was elected by the people of Ajax-Pickering to repre- sent them in the House of Commons and he failed to show up for key votes,” he said. House of Commons rules allow MPs to send leaflets (known as “10 per centers”) to 10 per cent of their riding, or any politi- cal riding in Canada. Mr. Holland said though all parties use the program, it’s not to the magnitude the Conservatives have demonstrated. “I didn’t agree with it when we were in govern- ment; I don’t agree with it in opposition,” he said. Mr. Sparrow said all fed- eral parties have a member on the Board of Internal Economy, which approves the 10 per centers, includ- ing the Liberals, calling Mr. Holland’s words “hypocrit- ical.” Mr. Holland said the way in which the marketing was demonstrated, in rela- tion to missing children, to be in poor taste. But, Mr. Sparrow dis- agreed, saying “It’s refer- ring to a missing member of parliament.” Mr. Holland said he’s re- ceived a number of calls from a wide range of vot- ers, including the Con- servative supporters, who were not fond of the flyers. “I think it backfired,” he said. “But I think it shows this process is out of con- trol.” Mr. Holland plans to ask the House of the Proce- dural Affairs Committee and the House Speaker to look into the issue since he finds the flyers are par- tisan, not informative. York residents paid the most on both counts, with $1,042 among renters and $1,490 among homeowners. While the average shelter pay- ment has gone up for families since the 2001 census, incomes have gone up too. The average household brings in $86,391, up slightly more than $10,000 since 2001. And while both women and men in Durham are earning more on average than at the begin- ning of the decade, the disparity between them is slightly wider. In 2006, women earned almost $19,000 less on average than men, who brought in just under $50,000 per year. Pickering households brought in the most money, on average, at $98,000 per year, followed closely by Uxbridge households at $97,800. Brock and Oshawa had the lowest average at $67,000 and $70,900 respectively. Overall, slightly less than a third of Dur- ham households earned at least $100,000 per year in 2006, up sig- nificantly from a quarter in 2001. But the statistics also indicate that while average incomes are going up, they’re not quite keep- ing pace with the cost of housing. In 2001, renting households spent 41.7 per cent of their income on shelter. That figure rose to 44.9 per cent in 2006. Home-owning households spent 17.7 per cent of their income on shelter in 2001. They saw it increase to 21.7 per cent in 2006. Mr. Saunders said the Region is working on further analysis of the census data. He wants to know not only what the average is, but how many families are at the different income levels and how much they’re spending on shelter. “We want to find out how many were spending, 40, how many were spending 50, how many were spending 60 per cent (of their income).” Housing is considered afford- able if residents spend 30 per cent or less of their income on it. If residents are spending more than 50 per cent, they’re in dan- ger of becoming homeless. Average incomes in Durham Region are on the rise, too Average, from page 1 sion from the sheer impact of the water. “I’m very pleased with staff,” he said. “We responded very quickly.” Mr. Quinn said the rain coming down in the areas was so strong that at one point he saw about a 20-foot rapid rushing down a hill in Greenwood. Mr. Quinn was pleased no staff or residents were hurt since the force of the water coupled with debris and erosion can be very dangerous. Overflowing creeks also flooded farmers’ fields and washed out driveways and lawns. Whitevale Road may have to be repaved. But, Mr. Quinn said although the road was in poor shape, it does have a lot of traffic calming measures and a number of resi- dents believe repaving it could encourage speeding. “As soon as you put asphalt in, people speed,” he said. There’s no word yet on when road work will be complete or how much money it’s going to cost, Mr. Quinn said. But it will be expen- sive, not only from the damage, but because of the amount of staff time it consumed. Even fire trucks were on the scene to help residents whose basements were flooded to those unable to leave their washed- out driveways. At press time yesterday crews were on the scene filling and patching the damage, cleaning culverts and making sure water courses were cleaned out. This won’t be com- plete for at least another week, and actual repairs will follow. Sideline 4 (Balsam Road) remains closed between Hwy. 7 and 5th Concession. The 5th Concession is closed between Church Street and Greenwood Road. Whitevale Road is closed between Altona Road and Mill Street. Also on Saturday, about three to four feet of a false roof on a tower near the library at the Pickering Civic Complex caved in. Metal railings are currently supporting it so the library is safe for the public. Mr. Quinn said the plan is to replace the wall board with alu- minum. “For 17 years it’s been fine,” he said. CAW Local 222 president said they will hold an information meeting for members on Monday morning at the General Motors Centre, 99 Athol St. He said discussions with GM were going “very well.” In early June GM announced it would be closing four North Ameri- can truck plants including the one in Oshawa. The shutdown would mean the loss of about 2,600 union jobs. The announcement triggered a protest in front of GM’s Canadian headquarters in Oshawa which last- ed more than two weeks and stopped operations at the location. The block- ade was stopped by a court decision which limited the number of protes- tors allowed in front of the building. Talks between the union and GM have been ongoing since the end of the barricade. Details of the discus- sions have been scant. Peter Kennedy, a senior CAW offi- cial responsible for GM, said compa- ny and union negotiators are working on a settlement that is different from other agreements relating to plant shutdowns. “There are some outstanding is- sues that still need to be cemented but we’re getting close,” Mr. Kennedy said. “I’m confident we’ll be able to complete something very shortly.” Mr. Kennedy said the talks have gone beyond early retirement incen- tives and monetary sweeteners for workers to quit -- common tools to reduce or eliminate layoffs when an auto plant closes. “There’s more at stake here,” he said. “We’re looking at doing some- thing unique. Durham police said the men tendered credit cards for gas at the Pioneer gas bar Sunday, only to have the cards rejected. The suspects then tried to buy the gas with Pioneer gift cards, but those turned out to have been bought with fraudulent credit cards, police said. The men fled in a Hummer 3 and the questionable cards were later found in a trash can at the gas station. The sus- pects were busted in north Oshawa shortly after the incident and investigators found more forged credit cards, a fraudu- lent Ontario driver’s licence and gift cards from various retail outlets, police said. The suspects have since been linked to incidents of credit card fraud at Pioneer gas bars in Port Perry and Bowmanville, police said. P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, July 25, 2008 durhamregion.com W hen I went to see John Tennant in his garage where he repairs things such as snowblowers, lawnmowers and bicycles for his neigh- bours, he proudly showed me his vintage lawnmower he’s fixed up and the motor- cycle he loves to ride. When I’m 81, I hope I’m sharp-minded and healthy enough to spend my time enjoying the things in life I love the most. Unfortunately, if Mr. Tennant loses the ability to engage in his hobby, he may also lose the spark that drives him to stay busy and active. ‘Mr. Fix-It’ helps out locals who need their lawnmowers fixed, or kids who have flat tires on their bicycles, and is known throughout the community as a chari- table man who simply wants to stay busy. But, apparently, complaints have been made to the City of Pickering’s bylaw department regarding his pastime, and he and his wife must go to court to argue his hobby is not a business. It’s obvious if bylaw officers receive a complaint, they have to do their job and follow up on it. According to both of Mr. Tennant’s councillors (Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson and Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean), complaints have arisen from his hobby. For example, he’ll start up lawnmow- ers in order to fix them and apparently the noise has been driving some people crazy. But, Mr. Tennant swears his neighbours didn’t complain. This indicates the neigh- bours complaining to the bylaw depart- ment never had the guts to tell him to his face that they find his pastime rather annoying. Perhaps if people relayed their concerns to him, he might have listened. Coun. Dickerson said he has suggested in the past that Mr. Tennant get a permit to avoid problems, but it may have had a different effect coming from a neighbour since he apparently enjoys helping them. Maybe people feel they can be anony- mous when filing their complaints, but it shows a lack of courage, especially when it’s going to ruin a nice old man’s favou- rite way to spend his time. Coun. McLean said he’s gotten com- plaints in the past year, and Coun. Dick- erson has received them over the past three. But Mr. Tennant has been living in his home since 1965, helping out his neighbours ever since. Why is it just now that people have a problem with him? I’ve received e-mails and phone calls from neighbours angry Mr. Tennant may have to cut his hobby short; not because he repairs things free, but because they understand staying active at an old age is important. Although the City can’t apply bylaws to some and exempt others, someone has to be able to do something to help the man out. It also has to be kept in mind that there are many others who run busi- nesses without permits in the area, and these are for profit. Even if the judge does rule for Mr. Tennant to cease and desist, hopefully there’s someone out there who can help him ventilate his garage so he can do his repairs inside. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that. Also, the zoning bylaw he’s being accused of breaking is not available online. It’s an extremely large document, which is fair. But it’s also unfair to charge someone if they can’t access the rules. Kristen Calis’ column appears every third Friday. E-mail kcalis@durhamregion.com. Just let ‘Mr. Fix-It’ be T here has been a lot of interest in FarmTech Energy’s plan to build an ethanol plant at the Oshawa waterfront. Advocates on both sides of the issue -- those opposed to building at the water- front and those who insist it’s the right place and the right project at the right time -- have staked out their positions. While the merits of producing etha- nol and its utility as a fuel additive can be debated, the issue at this time isn’t whether ethanol production makes sense. Upper levels of government have mandated that gasoline in Ontario must contain at least five per cent ethanol by 2010, so the demand will be there for it. The issue right now is, where should such a plant be located? Since Oshawa council must deal with a rezoning application from FarmTech in September, a decision on whether to approve or deny the application must be made. Concerns about noise and smell have been adequately addressed. Those who have visited the St. Clair Ethanol plant, which uses a dry mill process -- the type of technology Farmtech would employ in Oshawa -- suggest odour and the low hum emitted by the plant are barely noticeable. That’s an important part of the equation because opponents have raised odour concerns as a major red flag to block building the plant here. It’s not a significant problem, though plans by the City of Oshawa to build housing and other commercial and rec- reational developments in future near the harbour would probably not jibe with an ethanol plant. However, the key problem with the Oshawa waterfront location is its close proximity to the Second Marsh, a protect- ed wildlife oasis that is highly sensitive to the slightest changes to the environment. Much thought and planning over many years has gone into maintaining the pris- tine conditions in the Second Marsh and it would be a tragedy if the building and operation of an ethanol plant radically altered the marsh’s ecosystem. For that reason alone, it would be wise to locate the plant elsewhere in Durham Region. Officials from the Region of Durham and City of Oshawa should sit down with FarmTech’s owners and see if a better site can be located that suits the needs of the ethanol maker and has less of an impact on our environment. Kristen Calis Don’t be quick to blame youths for problems To the editor: Re: ‘Take responsibility for your teen- agers, letter to the editor, News Adver- tiser, July 9. Melanie Besser’s letter is quite cynical and insulting to teenagers. It is easy to put a blame on the youth these days and Ms. Besser seems to fall right into that trap. She seems to have no proof that “teenagers” stole her belongings besides for the fact that youth are natu- rally more active at night than elder folk. Just because teenagers are out at night does not serve reason to place the blame. The Durham District School Board is instead adding more than 300 bricks and mortar classrooms throughout the region over the next couple of years. “There will still be por- tables, but it certainly does take great strides to reduce the numbers,” said David Visser, superintendent of facilities services. The extra permanent classroom spaces come through three new schools in Whitby, two in Ajax, an Oshawa high school, and numerous additions sched- uled for completion by 2010 or sooner. “Portables are intended to be a temporary measure,” Mr. Visser said; wherever possible and where funding allows, the intent is to build bricks and mortar. “But in growing and transitioning communities it at times is a necessity.” When a school is built, part of the site plan deter- mines how many portables are already allowed, typi- cally six, but they can ask for variances from munici- palities if or when they need more. Having portables allows the board to move them around as enrolment and demographics change. “So certainly portables are an important tool to allow us to meet accom- modation needs,” Mr. Visser said. Staff look at a school’s ca- pacity, current enrolment, and future growth projec- tions to determine if por- tables can be added and accommodated, Mr. Visser said. “We look at washroom ca- pacity as well as the school’s facility,” Mr. Visser said. Some schools lend them- selves better to portables, depending on property size. Some schools are next to public parks and being able to utilize that space for play- ing would be considered. Portables are about $65,000 and have a life ex- pectancy of 20 to 25 years, which can be prolonged with repairs. Although no new por- tables are planned by the school board for this sum- mer, enrolment increases could always change that, Mr. Visser said. If demo- graphics require, they can be added even during the school year. Some of the board’s exist- ing portables will find new homes for the upcoming school year as well. “Some schools will re- ceive a few, but there’s not any school that will be re- ceiving a big influx of por- tables,” Mr. Visser said. Many of the portables being moved are to accom- modate on-site additions and are just being relocat- ed on the same property, such as at Bellwood Public School in Whitby, with ap- proval by the municipality. Convention will see 800 delegates vote DURHAM — The Canadian Auto Workers will choose outgoing presi- dent Buzz Hargrove’s replacement on Sept. 6. Mr. Hargrove, who announced his early retirement on July 15, said he would retire as soon as a replacement could be elected, instead of in 2009 when he turns 65, the CAW’s manda- tory retirement age. He said his only regret will be if no solution is found for Oshawa truck plant workers before he leaves. General Motors announced June 3 it would close the Oshawa truck plant in 2009. The move will eliminate 2,600 jobs in Oshawa. The CAW leadership announced it will be endorsing Ken Lewenza, presi- dent of CAW Local 444 in Windsor, to run for leadership. It also endorsed Peter Kennedy for the position of sec- retary-treasurer. Mr. Kennedy is now the assistant to secretary-treasurer Jim O’Neil. At the convention 800 delegates will vote on who will be the new president of the union. Candidates do not need the union’s official endorsement to run but it is “seen as an important step in the pro- cess and a boost to potential candi- dates,” a statement from the union said. Mr. Hargrove has been the CAW president since June 1992 after tak- ing over from inaugural president Bob White. Mr. Hargrove, who was recently ap- pointed to the Order of Canada, said he has not been asked to run for a politi- cal party and isn’t planning on it, but wouldn’t rule it out. Roughly 6,500 support staff workers in Ontario’s colleges, including 300 at Dur- ham College, may hit the picket lines in September if two bargaining sessions in August aren’t fruitful. “We did hold a vote last Wednesday in re- gards to the last offer we had received from the colleges and we turned down the offer by 79 per cent and had a 69 per cent strike mandate given to us,” said Rod Bemister, chair of the support staff bargaining team for the Ontario Public Service Employees Union. He added that two-thirds of union members participated in the vote. Support staff includes everyone from cleaners to IT workers to financial aid of- ficers. “I’d like to loosely describe it as every- thing except teaching and telling people what to do,” said Mr. Bemister. There are two sticking points for the union, one of which is wages. Mr. Bem- ister said he’s looking for the same wage increase teaching staff are getting, four per cent. “We’ve been offered three per cent, so we’re looking for some sort of wage equal- ity,” he said, adding that doesn’t mean sup- port staff are looking for the same wages as teachers, just the same percentage. As well, the union wants to keep wage comparisons within the college system as opposed to comparing them to other pub- lic service groups within Ontario. Mr. Bemister said the union goes back to the bargaining table on Aug. 12 and both sides will be working with a provin- cial mediator. Another round of bargaining is scheduled for the end of August. The union’s current contract expires on Aug. 31. “Worst case scenario is we don’t get a deal and Sept. 1, we actually use our strike mandate,” said Mr. Bemister. Durham College interim president Don Lovisa said the college respects the pro- vincial bargaining process and values its support staff. “We’re hoping that they find a resolution by September before the academic year starts up,” he said. However, every college has a contin- gency plan if staff hit the picket lines. “Our goal is to service students however that looks,” said Mr. Lovisa. “It’s really hard for me to speculate what strategies would be in place but our plan is to be open in Septem- ber regardless of the situation.” Meanwhile, Durham College will work to keep students informed, including sending out e-mail updates. “I sent out a communication to all students just letting them know the negotiations are ongoing and we’ll be in touch with them throughout the summer,” said Mr. Lovisa. In March 2006, college faculty members went on strike for 18 days. The redesign of the classic is a product of international origins, the company said in a news re- lease. The plans for the vehicle started in the United States, en- gineering took place in Australia, the car was tested on roads glob- ally and the process will end in Oshawa, where the build will take place. Production will begin in Febru- ary 2009. “The new Chevrolet Camaro delivers the best of both worlds -- great heritage and a thoroughly modern, advanced package of sporty driving, comfort and tech- nology,” Marc Comeau, vice-pres- ident of sales, service and market- ing for GM Canada said in a news release. “And it does so with styl- ing, fuel economy and value our competitors simply can’t match.” The Camaro is the kind of car that can illicit an emotional re- sponse, said Tony LaRocca, man- ager of product communication for GM Canada. “It’s a nice link to the past but a thoroughly modern package,” Mr. LaRocca said. The Camaro is not just a raw and powerful sports car; the V- 6 engine is fuel-efficient for the performance level it offers, Mr. LaRocca said. He said he has got- ten many positive responses about the design and look of the car. The 2010 year car will come in V-6-powered LS and LT models and the V-8-powered SS. All mod- els will have six-speed transmis- sions, a fuel-saving feature. The V-6 model has an estimated highway fuel consumption of nine litres per 100 kilometres. The re- designed vehicle will also feature direct injection technology, which GM said helps the engine deliver more power through increased ef- ficiency, while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emis- sions. GM expects to reach employ- ment of 700 people on the flex line to build the Camaro, said spokes- woman Adria MacKenzie. But employment numbers are always subject to market demands, she said. And any gar- dener in Canada can share at least one story of challenge and triumph when trying to grow their favourite vegetable. Chris- tian Children’s Fund of Canada, an inter- national development organization, says there are a lot of lessons gardeners here can learn from those who plant in some of the world’s difficult environments. In Africa, Asia and South America, families who plant essential food items are constantly challenged by the harshest of climates, a lack of water and use of the most basic harvesting tools. Yet, they have learned to be innovative and creative with their knowl- edge and resources. Lessons Canadian gardeners can learn from those who plant in developing coun- tries are to: • Diversify by planting different varieties. In drought and pest prone climates people know not to put all their eggs in one bas- ket. You may love tomatoes but if they don’t come in as well as you would have hoped then you can enjoy a back up harvest of cucumbers or peppers. • Select plants that complement each other: Fertile land to grow food is at a premium around the world. If you have limited space try growing the Three Sisters Garden of corn, beans and squash. Plant the corn first which grows tall, followed by pole bean seeds around the corn which uses the corn stalk to climb up and be supported. Finally, place the squash seeds about a foot and half from each mound of corn. • Get to know your environment. Your soil may not be appropriate for all types of seeds. Take a cup of soil and study the particles you find in it. Is there clay, sand, gravel, and organic material? Find out what would grow best in the type of soil you have in your garden. • Remember to share the fruits of your la- bour. If you are blessed with an abundance of vegetables and fruits, don’t create waste- share with friends, neighbours and local food banks who accept fresh goods. And, young Pickering singer/ songwriter and soccer player Joseph DeBenedictis was happy that his song ‘Feel the Game’ made it on to the documentary ‘Make Goals Not War’, produced and directed by Ma- tias Margulis. It certainly didn’t start out that way, notes DeBenedictis, 19. He says he wrote the music and words to the song last year after watching and thinking about the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and how soccer brought together mil- lions of people the world over in friendship. At the same time, Margulis was thinking about the same ideas on how the game of soccer could be used as a means of solving conflict and war. The concept of soccer’s power to unite peacefully spawned both the documentary and the music. But, that’s not the end of the story. DeBenedictis says his belief in the song, that was recorded in Durham Region, prompted him to send it along to Margulis. “Initially, I didn’t know about (the documentary). But, when I heard about it, I thought (the song) would work so well with the film.” After getting in touch with Margu- lis, DeBenedictis says the film-maker also concurred the song would be a good fit in the film. “It was great,” says DeBenedictis of the film and the song, that appears at the end of the half-hour documen- tary. “The point of the song worked so well with the movie. I’m happy that it happened.” The documentary was screened for an audience of Pickering Soccer Club members in the city recently, with the film-maker and the song- writer in attendance. DeBenedic- tis was joined on stage by fellow musicians and friends Ross Hayes Citrullo, Dan Liberatori and Patrick Lobo to perform the song for the audience. The documentary film has played from Mexico City to Orlando and has been screened at a number of film festivals since its release in 2007. DeBenedictis says he continues to write songs since the breakup of his former band Preconfused. He’s also working on a comedy show on Rogers TV entitled The Wee Show, which will debut in the fall. As well, DeBenedictis continues his passion for the game, playing soc- cer with a men’s under-23 team in Pickering. Crawford, a 52-year-old resident of Whitby, is hoping the event, to be run out of Sarnia Bay Marina and broadcast on the World Fishing Net- work, will help spark interest and take the sport to a new level. “I was really, really excited this year because people have tried to make it big here in Canada and haven’t been able to do it,” said Crawford, explaining the WFN was hoping to run a full bass fishing se- ries this year, but decided instead to focus on this one event and make it as successful as possible. “I’m really super excited about going to this event because it’s really a made-for-TV event,” added Craw- ford, pointing out that cameras will be on all 10 boats that reach Sun- day’s final. “It’s definitely the high- light of the year for Ontario.” Crawford will be one of 60 to begin the event Friday morning, and hopes his experience will lead him into Sunday, where $25,000 of the $130,000 purse will go to the winner. “I’d be disappointed if I wasn’t (in the final day), but believe me the vast majority of the people com- peting in this thing, anybody can win it,” Crawford said. “They’ve all got the smarts, they all know what they’re doing. It’s a high-end event with a lot of talent in it. “I’ve been in that position many, many times in three-day events going into the last day, so the mental part of my game is hopefully some- thing that will help carry me over,” he added. Indeed, Crawford knows a thing or two about casting a line. He’s a four-time National Classic Champi- on and three-time National Angler of the Year. But, as he pointed out, it will be a star-studded field, including top professionals Bob Izumi, Wayne Izumi, J.P. DeRose as well as several international competitors from the U.S. and Japan. Among the other local competi- tors are Port Perry’s Dave Mercer, who has his own Facts of Fishing TV show, and Mark Gillson of Whitby. Crawford grew up in Ajax and worked on the line at the Gener- al Motors truck plant for about 13 years before focusing solely on fish- ing in 1987. “By around 1986 I realized, hey, I could probably make a living at fish- ing here,” he explained. “At the time, my wife said we had to buy a house before I quit my job. So we did, we bought a house and shortly after I quit my job at General Motors and started fishing.” He’s recently jumped back into the working world, as the vice-presi- dent of sales for Kenmar Products, a hunting accessories firm in Matta- wa, Ont. He calls it “a dream job”, not only because it fits perfectly into his lifestyle, but also because Kenmar has become his biggest sponsor. While he wouldn’t complain about supplementing his income in Sarnia this weekend, he said his first concern is to see the event become a staple on the Canadian fishing scene. “There’s decent money involved in it, but I really want to see it suc- ceed in a big way,” he said. “If any- body can do it and make it happen here in Canada, it’s WFN.” Submitted photo Former Ajacian Rocky Crawford shows off a smallmouth bass caught in the Haliburton Highlands. He hopes to have similar good fortune at the Canadian Open of Fishing being run out of Sarnia this weekend. Jen Beckberger wins freestyle gold at nationals WINNIPEG — Jen Beckberger of Ajax won two medals, including a gold, at the Summer Nationals swimming competition in Winni- peg. Beckberger, a member of the Whitby Dolphins Swim Club, won gold in the women’s 50-metre free- style and bronze in the 100m free- style. She also finished fourth in the 50m backstroke and had a top-8 finish in the 200 free. Eric Chan also did well, posting a fourth place finish in the men’s 50m breaststroke. He was ninth in the 100m breaststroke. The meet was held at the Pan American Games Pool in Winni- peg and was attended by the top swimmers from across Canada, in- cluding some who are going to the Beijing Olympics. Unfortunately for Beckberger, who’s 22, she had a disappointing effort at the Olympic Trials in Mon- treal in April and did not qualify to go to Beijing. Sports briefs JULY 25, 2008 PSC hosts all-star tourney this weekend PICKERING — More than 35 teams are slated to compete in the Pickering Soccer Club’s second an- nual Green and Gold All-Star Tourna- ment at Princess Diana Fields this weekend. The boys’ and girls’ tournament is for all-star recreational players in the under-seven, under-eight and under- nine age groups and will be played on modified smaller fields. Teams will travel from as far away as Belleville and Mississauga for the tourney. PSC head coach Tony La Ferrara notes all-star tournaments, such as this weekend’s event, give teams the opportunity to develop their technical skills and team play, as well as giving players the opportunity to travel and to meet other soccer players from different districts. More information, including schedules, is available online at www. pickeringsoccer.com. Savarino sisters earn All-Academic awards PICKERING — Outstanding on the tennis court, two Pickering sisters also excelled in the classroom at the University of Ontario Institute of Tech- nology. Giannetta Savarino, of Pickering, and Bianca Savarino-Easter, now living in Whitby, were recognized as 2007-2008 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) All-Academic Award recipients. This prestigious award recognizes a student’s dedication and commit- ment to sport as well as his or her grade point average (GPA) and com- mitment to academics. To receive this award, students must be enrolled in full-time courses, compete full-time on a varsity team and maintain a mini- mum 3.7 GPA. Giannetta Savarino was a mem- ber of the women’s tennis team this past varsity season. A recent gradu- ate from the Faculty of Education, she took home top honours at the UOIT Athletic Banquet as she was awarded the UOIT Female Scholastic award with a 4.03 GPA. Bianca Savarino-Easter (women’s tennis program) has also just gradu- ated from the Faculty of Education. Bianca was named the UOIT Women’s Tennis most valuable player for the 2007-08 season. ”We are extremely proud of (these) recipients who earned this prestigious award,” stated Ken Babcock, director of athletics. “The student athletes work very hard to achieve academic and athletic excel- lence and we could not be happier to have such great individuals represent UOIT.” THE NEWS ADVERTISER, July 25, 2008 PAGE 19 A/Pdurhamregion.com Michael Jurysta photo Holding on for dear life AJAX — An Oshawa player hangs on as an Ajax Wanderers’ player moves toward the touch line during Toronto Rugby Union women’s premier ‘B’ rugby action at the Ajax club last Saturday afternoon. Soccer player, 65,scores two in Pickering Village men’s event PICKERING — It was all for fun and fun for all the men who turned out for the first Pickering Village United mini-soccer tournament at Pick- ering’s Village East Park recently. Thirty-six players in total, ranging in age from 20 to 65, including 65-year-old John Long who’s still playing the game he loves, competed on six teams divided into two divisions for the friendly event. Teams on the field included England, North- ern Ireland, France, Holland, Sweden and Ger- many. In the finals, Northern Ireland prevailed over England 4-2. Paul Long had two goals to bring the wee country its first major trophy. Northern Ireland team members are John Long, Simon McLuckie, Paul Long, Chris Reynor, Chris Steeves, Dan Watson and Jason Slapnicar. Matt McCall was named as goalkeeper of the tournament and the ‘Golden Boot’ award went to Chris Reynor. After the success of the tournament this year, organizers are gearing toward an even bigger and better tournament next season and would like to donate the proceeds to a local charity. Or- ganizers would like to see a partnership formed with the Town and local businesses to make the tournament an annual charity event. Safari Restaurant and Bar, and Source for Sports Pickering Village provided sponsorship. The Heat were pitted against the Lady Mus- tangs from Amherst, New York in the final, with both teams playing errorless ball in a defensive gem until Pickering plated the win- ning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 4-3 victory. The Heat bantams became the first Canadian under-16 division champs in the tournament’s history. Pickering advanced to the final round of the tourna- ment by virtue of finishing as the sixth seed during the preliminary round. In the first game of the final round, Pickering de- feated the third-seeded Kenmore Blue Devils 2-0. Next, the Heat had an even tougher time dispatch- ing the Monroe Blazers, the second seeds in the tour- ney. The Pickering bantams needed four extra innings to finally succeed against Monroe with a 7-6 victory. Team members are Chan- tal Wilson, Jennifer Van Dusen, Kaitlin Marianelli, Sheila Paulin, Hailey Mel- lis, Samantha Fougere, Abi Krol, Ashley Willock, Megan Yeandle, Savannah Collins and Jennafer Collins. A leaking basement is frustrating and expensive – and it’s not something you want to have to fix repeatedly. That’s why it’s best to bring in a professional, someone who can pinpoint the problem and repair it right the first time. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has been in the business for more than 30 years and has been in close to 15,000 homes in Durham region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.” Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be innovative and try different techniques to solve problems. He takes pride in his troubleshooting ability. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Crawford adds that if he can try something else first, he will. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be extremely efficient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping,” he says. Crawford warns that it’s important not to ignore the problem. He says homeowners who invest in their foundations will save money in the long term. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You have to get in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation.
