The Mayor’s Task Force on Accountability and Transparency has completed a document that will go to council Monday night. It makes recommendations regarding a code of conduct for council members, such as their duties, giv- ing and receiving gifts, use of alcohol, interact- ing with the public and media relations. “Obviously it’s something that I feel is worth- while and I would like to see it endorsed,” Mayor Ryan said in an interview, adding he hopes members of council will make recom- mendations as to the changes they see fit. As for expenses, it says no alcohol can be charged as an expense, but in a broader sense, it states the following: “Members are committed to avoiding waste, abuse and extravagance in the provision or use PICKERING — In a wide-ranging inter- view with the News Advertiser, hurdler Per- dita Felicien talks about her foot injury, which could keep her from attending the Beijing Olympics, her training schedule, her desire to compete and what she’ll do if she can’t make the Olympics. The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) hopes the court will order the Central East Local Health Inte- gration Network (CE LHIN) to reconsider its plan to move the beds, as well as the decision to cancel nine more mental health beds supposed to go in with the redevelopment at Rouge Val- ley Ajax and Pickering hospi- tal (RVAP). The Ontario Supe- rior Court of Justice Divisional Court in Toronto will hear the case. The plan that was made pub- lic on March 25 was passed by the CE LHIN a few days later. OPSEU argues the LHIN worked with RVHS to keep the plan under wraps until it was approved by both boards, and OPSEU first vice-president and treasurer Patty Rout said if the LHIN’s board had con- sulted with the community, it would have likely never been approved. Although the CE LHIN did invoke a 30-day consultation period after approving the plan, it’s still going ahead. “The LHIN not only failed to consult with patients, fami- lies and health professionals directly affected by the deci- sion, it left out its own Mental Health and Addictions Steering Committee out of the process, as was mandated in the LHIN legislation brought in by the McGuinty Liberal government,” an OPSEU press release stated. The hospital made the deci- sion to move the mental health beds from RVAP to Rouge Val- ley Centenary Hospital in Scar- borough to consolidate the unit and to provide combined medi- cal/psychiatriac beds at Cente- nary hospital in Scarborough. “This makes no sense,” Ms. Rout said. “This is just about raiding services from one com- munity to provide them some- where else.” Visit www.durhamregion. com for updates on the case. Court asked to rule on mental-health bed move Criminal code needs to be changed By Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Changes to the criminal code could be parlayed into sportsbooks in Ontario. The Province wants the federal government to make changes to the criminal code to allow sports- books at casinos, such as the Slots at Ajax Downs and the Great Blue Heron Casino. Las Vegas-style sportsbooks aren’t permitted under the crimi- nal code and the only sports bet- ting allowed in Ontario is with Pro-Line, which requires bettors to select the outcomes of three or more sports contests. Having a sportsbook would allow a gambler to bet on an individual football, baseball, hockey, basketball, soccer and other games as opposed to the multiple “parlay” betting that exists under Pro-Line, the government- run lottery. “At this point, it’s the federal criminal code of Canada that pro- hibits single sports betting. The code has to be changed,” said Anne Dunderdale, the media relations co-ordinator for the ministry of en- ergy and infrastructure, which is responsible for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming. “Following that, we’ll look at it as part of our responsible gaming strategy,” she said. “The minister is hopeful the federal government will be amending the criminal code.” George Smitherman was re- cently appointed the minister, hav- ing been shifted from the health minister last month. His predeces- sor, David Caplan, had written to the federal government asking for changes to allow sportsbooks. Mr. Caplan was shifted to health in the shuffle. “The current minister (Mr. Smi- therman) is hopeful, but he hasn’t asked them to change it,” Ms. Dun- derdale said. “The federal govern- ment is considering making chang- es. We’ve indicated we’re open to considering it.” Ajax-Pickering MPP Joe Dick- son’s riding includes the Slots at Ajax Downs. “It’s premature” to consider sportsbooks, he said. “I would just say it’s in the discussion stage at this time. It’s really at the federal level.” “We, as a caucus, haven’t dis- cussed it and have no preliminary discussion on it,” Mr. Dickson said. A published report noted the Province is especially interested in sportsbooks at the two Niagara Falls casinos, the new Caesars Wind- sor facility and the existing Casino Rama. The Niagara and Windsor facilities would attract gamblers from the United States, where sportsbooks are only allowed in Las Vegas. “I don’t know if we could restrict it to individual gaming locations. That’s one of the questions that has to be answered,” Mr. Dickson said. If sportsbooks were allowed in Niagara Falls, “why not at the Ajax slots,” he said, adding he didn’t think it could be limited to cer- tain areas. Also, there would be pressure from gamblers who would want to go to a casino closer to their home. Asked if sportsbook gambling would be allowed at all casinos in Ontario, Ms. Dunderdale said, “I can’t speculate on specific sites. Nobody knows. The federal code has to change and we’ll look at how to implement it.” “Easing the tax load on the resi- dents of Ontario, there may be some potential there,” Mr. Dickson said. Allowing the sportsbooks in ca- sinos would also provide an incen- tive for gamblers to avoid private games, Mr. Dickson said. -- with files from Torstar Network OSHAWA Manufacturer Inventory DIRECT Palliser Palliser •• Sklar Sklar Trendline Trendline •• Magnussen Magnussen SuperStyle •• Howard MillerHoward Miller NO TAX ** NO TAX ** www.sklargallery.com Exceptional Warranty Superior Construction Fast Delivery ONELOCATIO N ONLY OSHAWA 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 905-723-4561 Hours: Mon.• Tues.• Wed. 10-6, Thurs.• Fri. 10-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun.11-5 life • style • solutions OSHAWA*Colours may not be exactly as shown. **No Tax on fl oor model clearance items only. Just on expenses alone, council totalled $72,975, up from 2006’s $69,953. Ajax’s council tallied just more than $47,000 on expenses. Each councillor is al- lowed to spend up to $9,800 on travel expenses, compared to Ajax’s council, which is allowed $2,700 each per term for a difference of $7,042. Mayor Ryan explained Pickering councillors feel they need the latitude to travel more. The biggest spender, Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson, spent $18,304, most of which went to conferences ($9,315.70). Council is allowed $3,000 per year in the category, with a limit of $12,000 for the four-year term, ex- plained City Clerk Debi Wilcox in an interview, who oversees expenses along with City trea- surer Gil Paterson. Coun. Dickerson spent $1,562.36 on tele- phones, which includes an extra internet connection at his cottage. But councillors are allowed to have a phone line or internet con- nection at up to two residences, Ms. Wilcox explained. Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell followed closely behind, spending $17,734. She also attended various conferences to get her- self up to speed for her first term on council. She spent $8,638.70 on conferences, but did make some effort in keeping expenses down by booking cheaper flights than the ones the City booked for her, the document states. Her outside agencies totalled $3,500, which was for her website start-up. “I don’t expect them to be in that range again because of the big ticket items I somewhat needed to have,” she said, referring to initial items such as a BlackBerry. Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson spent the third largest amount, his expenses standing out in the areas of newsletters ($6,129) and $3,360 on outside agencies for secretarial services, such as working on his website and managing contact lists, out of his home office, which is allowed. “My expenses are higher because I work outside of the envelope,” he said. Coun. Johnson spent the highest on phones and internet at $2,149.92, including a line at a second residence. But since he’s in a rural area, which is long distance, he’s allowed some leeway. However, since an editorial in the News Advertiser criticized his spending, he made some changes. “As of last week I cut two of the lines out of my house,” he said. Although making efforts to cut his expens- es, he said certain items such as advertising should be cut down in the City’s budget; not just council’s expenses. He added the Region doesn’t cover such things as phones or busi- ness cards, which instead is covered by the City and thinks keeping senior staff unnecessarily long at meetings is another waste of money. “There’s a flaw in the system there,” he said. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean had the highest cell phone bill in one month, but deducted the calls that didn’t pertain to coun- cil. His most expensive monthly bill charged to the City was $672.11. He charges internet cafes to the City while on vacation, noted in his expenses for City business. “If it is for City business, that is in our policy,” Ms. Wilcox said. Some expensive dinners were charged to the City by most councillors, but Ms. Wilcox said as long as it’s for council matters, they’re al- lowed. The policy was set by council; therefore they decide how much they spend and how. If council goes over a budget in a certain area, as long as the baseline budget is not exceeded, it’s acceptable. Mayor Ryan made it his mandate in 2006 to implement the rules of transparency. He said the City of Ottawa has shown interest in the document, as well as the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasures of Ontario. Dave Pickles: $78,070 After Pickering council expenses stood out when putting together report cards, the News Advertiser decided to take a detailed look at them. The documents were readily available at City Hall; those interested are just asked to come in and look at them as opposed to actually pick- ing them up due to the large amount of paper. But after three trips to City Hall, all the copies needed were provided by the clerk’s department. Online date leads to stabbing AJAX — A woman has been arrested and a man is wanted by police in connection with a stabbing outside a Falby Court apart- ment building on Saturday, July 5. According to Durham Regional Police, a 37-year-old man went to the building to meet a woman he’d met online. Once there, he changed his mind about meeting the woman and attempted to leave. A second man exited the apartment, accosted the vic- tim and demanded money. When the victim refused, he was stabbed in the abdomen, police said. The man was taken to the Ajax- Pickering hospital and treated for non-life threatening wounds. Rebecca Dunsford, 21, of Falby Court was arrested and is charged with robbery and possession for the purposes of trafficking. Police have issued an arrest warrant for Justin Hawkins, 38, of Bloor Street West in Toronto. He’s facing robbery, aggravated as- sault and weapons dangerous charges. Mr. Hawkins is currently being held by Toronto police on an unrelated charge and will be arrested by Durham police as well. Investigators want to know whether the situation was a one-off or if other similar incidents have occurred. Anyone with new information should call Det. Const. Martin Franssen of the 19 Di- vision Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2532. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, July 11, 2008 durhamregion.com Use common sense when visiting emergency room W hile a shortage of family phy- sicians continues to plague Ontario, a new report has shown what many suspected to be true -- patients without regular doctors are caus- ing a backlog in emergency departments across the province. The Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences has put out a report show- ing patients with chronic diseases and without a family doctor generate 118,000 excess emergency room visits a year in Ontario. While some may use the ER because they believe they have nowhere else to go, some patients who do have doc- tors are using emergency rooms to seek a second opinion, says Dr. Eric Fonberg, interim chief of emergency medicine at the Rouge Valley Health System, which includes the Ajax-Pickering hospital. In fact, a full 20 to 30 per cent of ER visits could be deferred or seen in another set- ting, suggests Dr. Fonberg. The province’s health care system, straining for years to rein in budgets and deliver services in a cost-effective manner, has been advising patients all along not to take non-emergency complaints to Ontar- io’s busy ER staff. Those with minor aches and pains, coughs and colds are advised to find a walk-in clinic. But, those patients who do have a family doctor and are seek- ing second opinions at the ER may be under the mistaken impression they will have access to technology and expertise unavailable from their family physician, says Dr. Fonberg. Common sense suggests that only emer- gencies be seen in an ER, but there will always be a margin of reasonable error. Patients are not doctors and may not be able to accurately assess certain symp- toms; neighbourhood walk-in clinics may be closed. But, those who merely seek a second opinion should be aware that an emergency room is not the answer, and that this creates an extra strain on the sys- tem. Meanwhile, the Ontario Medical Asso- ciation offers an interesting snapshot of Ontario’s physician shortage. While the number of patients without a family doc- tor has dropped in the past few years, the province is still short 2,500 doctors and the number keeps growing, with another 2,600 physicians over retirement age. Five of Durham’s eight municipalities are listed as under-serviced by family doctors, with Oshawa topping the list when it comes to shortages. That city has 38,000 residents without a family doctor, and is short 28 physicians. Ontario patients are not to blame for the challenges facing the health care system, but people are asked to be cognizant of what warrants a visit to the ER. Eliminat- ing needless visits helps keep ERs hum- ming to help patients who belong there. I t was a good-news day for Durham last Wednesday when the ministry of training, universities, and colleges announced a $9 million local invest- ment in the skilled trades. At a time when Ontario’s economy and job prospects are looking a little gloomy, the Province has stepped up with cash to help people acquire skilled trades. The $9 million announced July 2 will jumpstart the Whitby Skills Centre’s $24-million expansion, which when complete, will create an extra 1,000 student spaces and new outfitting to support energy-sector trades programs coming to the centre for 2010. Those new student spaces and trades are especially important in Durham considering the number of layoffs slat- ed for Oshawa’s General Motors truck plant and the associated job losses. The soon-to-be unemployed workers will need new jobs soon, or our economy will take an even bigger hit. Unem- ployed people means less business for restaurants, theatres, and other leisure activities, which provide jobs. According to the Province, more than half of existing skilled trade workers will retire over the next 15 years. With so many thousands of people leaving the sector, it’s like an untapped fishing hole just waiting for people to drop their hook into. Hopefully, more students will start to realize that and begin taking advantage of all the incentives surrounding the field of hands-on employment. The 2006 Census shows only nine per cent of Durham residents have an apprenticeship or trades certificate of equivalence. For university, 15 per cent have a certificate, diploma or degree, and four per cent have a certificate or diploma below a bachelors. College or other non-university is 22 per cent. There is no shame in skilled trades. It’s just as impressive, maybe more impressive, to meet someone who can rewire an electrical box, take apart a car engine, or fix an elevator than it is to read PhD on a business card. It’s always baffling how people tend to measure someone’s intelligence based on the number of degrees they carry from university. Intelligence shouldn’t be measured by your level of schooling, but rather your ability. There are probably thousands of people who hold doctorates who could not fix their car or do their own home renovations to save their lives. The smart thing to do in this era, is get a skilled trade, especially one in the energy sector. After all, our greening world needs geo-thermal and solar- powered systems; the money is going to be there for those able to install and fix them. Crystal Crimi’s column appears every third Thursday. Now I know cats should be kept indoors or on a leash just like dogs at all times and not allowed to roam freely. Nice to know. My only wish is that the cat owners have read this article and would follow what the City bylaws have stated. I am fed up with cats defecating on my front deck, in my flower pots and on the roof of my back deck. Yes, I am fed up cleaning up after your cat. I don’t own a cat and I don’t feel I should have to clean up after my neighbours’ cats after they have done their duty on my property and not their owners’. So come on people, let’s get with the program and follow the bylaw, and keep these cats under wraps. Mike Childerhose Oshawa Councillors concerned with lack of info, sustainability initiatives By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — A lack of information kept the plan- ning and development committee from approving plans to start grading work on a future Duffin Heights Neighbourhood subdivi- sion that will take some holes away at the Seaton Golf and Country Club. At Monday’s planning and development meeting, the committee heard from a vice president for Mat- tamy (Brock Road) Homes Limited, Rodger Miller, as to why Mattamy should be exempt from the City’s fill and topsoil disturbance bylaw. Although Mat- tamy owns the land and has submitted draft plan of subdivision and zoning amendment applications, they won’t go before coun- cil until late 2008; there- fore a permit to do such work has to be approved by council. In a letter to the City, Mr. Miller wrote the de- velopment schedule re- quires about three-and- a-half months for topsoil stripping and cut and fill moving to pre-grade the land for servicing, and to complete the rough grades for the pond, and wants to get it finished before the winter months. “Our consultant is pre- paring their detail engi- neering design for submis- sion with the anticipation that the City and Region will be able to review and approve the plans and allow us to start servicing approximately 100 units in October,” he said. The letter further ex- plained since the draft plan was submitted in De- cember, Mattamy has met with City staff numerous times and the environ- mental servicing plan was approved by the Toronto Region and Conservation “in principle.” But Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson introduced a motion that the report be referred to the Oct. 6 planning meet- ing so more information can be provided, which the committee approved. “It’s very sketchy,” Coun. Johnson said. “We’re put- ting the cart way ahead of the horse.” Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson expressed disappointment with the lack of sustainability initia- tives going into the plans; this on top of seeing no plans. There’s also been no statutory public meet- ing, and Coun. Dickerson said it’ll deter people from coming out to share their views if the plans go ahead first. He was unhappy “to be asked to buy into some- thing before I’m comfort- able with it.” Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell asked the City’s director of plan- ning and development, Neil Carroll, if this were rejected, whether Mat- tamy could take it to the Ontario Municipal Board. Mr. Carroll said yes, but doesn’t think they have a good case since the cur- rent bylaw does not per- mit it. Coun. Johnson was also concerned with the trees that will come down as a result. Mr. Carroll ex- plained tree bylaws don’t affect those in the area since it’s mostly for trees along water courses. Staff, however, did not have a problem with Mat- tamy’s request since the lands are currently desig- nated for urban develop- ment and the exemption will only apply to the tim- ing of the grading activity. PICKERING TOWN CENTRE 905-420-8000 durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 8 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, July 11, 2008 By Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com AJAX — The Town is helping make the GTA green. Ajax is one of dozens of partners in the Toronto City Summit Alli- ance’s Greening Greater Toronto initiative. Launched in late June, GGT aims to make the GTA the ‘Green- est Big City in North America.’ The focus is on five key areas -- reduc- ing carbon emissions, clean air, clean water, waste reduction and diversion, and sustainable land management. “We are involved because the environment is one of our most pressing challenges,” said Christie McLardie, the Town’s communi- cations manager. More than 130 environmental organizations, businesses, govern- ments, non-profit organizations and labour associations, have joined in the effort, including the City of Oshawa, Veridian Corpora- tion and Ontario Power Genera- tion. The GGT has a “regional vision to build on existing efforts and leadership,” Ms. McLardie said. Each partner will “participate in our own individual projects. There ware lots of things underway in Ajax that fit in their projects,” she said. “We’re already including en- vironmental projects in our mu- nicipal strategic plans.” This will “facilitate discussion between our partners,” she said, pointing to the Town’s new fire hall and operations centre as being Leaders in Energy and Environ- mental Design (LEED) certified, making it the only such complex in the GTA. One of the aims of GGT is to incorporate green technology in designs, Ms. McLardie said. “For us, we’re leaders and we’ll provide that information to our municipal partners in the GTA.” With water conservation, “we’re already there in terms of looking at those infrastructure costs.” The Town has led the fight on water quality in Lake Ontario, in- cluding the expanded water pol- lution control plant immediately west of the Duffins Creek Marsh that has state-of-the-art technol- ogy. The Town is working on a waste water management initia- tive, she said, and added that pres- ervation of the greenbelt is a prior- ity in Ajax. The tournament starts at 7:30 a.m. July 12 at Goreski’s Landing in Port Perry. Teams can still register for the event online at www.fish4charity.com or by calling Mr. Coroghly at 905-409- 5853. The cost is $140 per team. All proceeds will go to the R.S. McLaugh- lin Durham Regional Cancer Centre. Non-fishers are also encouraged to come out and enjoy the day. A live weigh-in will be held at 4 p.m., fol- lowed by an after-party at D&D’s Lake- side restaurant, featuring prizes and live music from the Ilse Themen Band. Donations will be accepted through- out the night. For more information visit www. fish4charity.com. Collection arranged for fish die-off DURHAM — Curbside collections have been arranged for dead fish wash- ing ashore from Lake Simcoe. Durham Region will provide special curbside collection of fish carcasses for residents with property on the shores of the lake. The area runs from Beaverton to Port Bolster, including Alsop’s Beach and Shoreline Road. The arrangements have been made to address the large number of dead carp found in the area. The curbside pickups will take place July 14, 16 and 18. Residents should dispose of all dead carp in double gar- bage bags and place bagged fish car- casses at the curb by 7 a.m. Garbage bags should not weigh more than 44 pounds each. Dead carp should not be taken to the Brock Township Landfill or disposed of in the green bin. The Region also advises all residents to handle the fish carcasses safely by using rubber gloves, rakes or shovels to move the carcass, double bagging the fish for disposal and washing hands with soap and hot water. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, July 11, 2008 PAGE 11 A/Pdurhamregion.com The Regional Municipality of York and The Regional Municipality of Durham NOTICE OF DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT REPORT PRE-SUBMISSION REVIEW SOUTHEAST COLLECTOR TRUNK SEWER INDIVIDUAL ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT Regarding lands in Markham, Toronto and Pickering The existing Southeast Collector (SEC) Trunk Sewer is an integral component of the York Durham Sewage System (YDSS). The Regional Municipalities of York and Durham are undertaking the SEC Trunk Sewer Individual Environmental Assessment (IEA) to address the additional sanitary sewer fl ows projected from future growth as allowed for in York Region’s Offi cial Plan. The Regions are co-proponents on the IEA, as a portion of the study area is within Durham Region and they co-own the existing Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer within Durham Region. As part of the IEA process, Public Information Forums (PIFs) were held in Pickering and Markham on April 15th and 17th, 2008, to present the following aspects associated with the preferred sewer route (see map): • Detailed assessments of the potential effects on the environment associated with construction and operation of the new sewer • Recommended mitigation measures for minimizing potential effects on the environment • Recommended environmental monitoring plans for use during the construction and operation of the new sewer • Recommended ecological, recreational, and infrastructure enhancements With feedback received from these meetings, the Regional Municipalities of York and Durham have prepared a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) report documenting the SEC Trunk Sewer IEA process. This report is being made available for agency and public review prior to a formal approval submission to the Minister of the Environment in the fall of 2008. The review period for the draft EA report will be from July 21, 2008 to August 29, 2008. You may review the draft EA report during regular hours of operation at the following locations: Comments and information regarding this IEA are being received to assist York and Durham Regions in meeting the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. By Melissa Mancini mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Made in Canada mat- ters. That’s been the slogan around Osha- wa on the T-shirts and lips of Canadian Auto Workers members and support- ers. In some industries the guidelines for what is made in Canada are very clear. For example, in the food indus- try Canadian content labels were first introduced in the 1980s. The guidelines haven’t changed since they were introduced. If manu- facturers use the “Product of Canada” and ”Made in Canada” labels then the last substantial change of the goods must have occurred in Canada and at least 51 per cent of the total direct costs of producing or manufacturing the goods have to be Canadian. The federal government is updating these guidelines. The auto industry is a totally differ- ent story. “The whole notion of made in Cana- da is very strange in a rationalized, in- tegrated industry. It’s hard to be coun- try-specific like that,” said auto analyst Dennis DesRosiers. The Canadian automotive industry has long had ties with U.S. auto pro- ducers, ties that were strengthened when the North American Free Trade Agreement passed in 1994. Canada’s trade with its North American partners has increased 122 per cent over the past 14 years according to the federal government. “There is no border, so there isn’t a made-in-Canada vehicle, period,” Mr. DesRosiers said. “There’s a made in North America vehicle.” His definition of a Canadian vehicle is not necessarily an auto built by the Big Three, made up of Chrysler, GM and Ford. “What is a Canadian ve- hicle? There are now vehicles manu- factured by Honda and Toyota in Can- ada that have higher Canadian content than some vehicles manufactured by GM, Ford and Chrysler, in Canada,” he said. Canadian Auto Workers Local 222 President Chris Buckley doesn’t agree. He said the Big Three have much high- er Canadian parts content and create a lot more spin-off jobs in this country as a result. “General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have very high content with Canadian automotive parts; the offshore com- petitors have very little,” he said. Toyota and Honda don’t assemble as many vehicles in Canada as General Motors, but their production rates are still high. In 2007 Toyota manufactured 302,749 vehicles and 224,020 four-cyl- inder engines in Canada. Honda as- sembled 390,000 cars and $2 billion worth of parts. GM produced almost 800,000 cars and trucks in Oshawa and an additional 170,000 vehicles at a plant in Ingersoll. Of the vehicles produced in Oshawa, 300,000 were trucks. Mr. DesRosiers said Canada also ex- ports about $35-40 billion worth of parts to the U.S. “Most vehicles manu- factured in the States have a Canadian component as well,” he said. By Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Lupus is often called the “disease of a thou- sand faces” and it’s easy to see why. A scan of the Durham Lupus Support group reveals grandparents, university stu- dents, children and young professionals, all with very different lives -- and one dif- ficult disease in common. The support group will be hosting its second annual Walk for Lupus, Fun Fair and Silent Auction on Sept. 13 to raise money for lupus re- sources and research. Lupus is a chronic disease that causes the immune sys- tem to attack healthy cells, leading to inflammation, tis- sue damage and organ fail- ure. Lupus Canada says at least 50,000 Canadians live with the disease, which is still largely unknown and misun- derstood. As well as much-needed funds, organizers hope this year’s walk will raise aware- ness of the disease and the local people who live with it every day. Here are two of their sto- ries. JANET GRAHAM So much has changed since Janet Graham was diag- nosed with lupus in 1979. By the time doctors finally gave a name to her symptoms, she had been struggling alone for years. It started when she was 18 and suddenly began ach- ing all over. She underwent test after test with no conclu- sion. Then came problems with her heart, skin, liver and muscles. Finally, after becoming se- riously ill while pregnant with her first daughter, she was sent to a rheumatologist and the mystery was solved. “It was very scary not to know what was wrong with me all that time,” said Ms. Graham, who is now in her 50s. But pinpointing lupus doesn’t cure it. While Ms. Graham has been taking medication and undergoing treatment for years, she still goes through rough patches. “Sometimes I can’t even lift my arms to put the dishes away because of the pain in my muscles,” she said. But the mother and grand- mother tries to make the most of life and says the Dur- ham Lupus Support Group has been a godsend. “Sometimes other people think we’re hypochondriacs because we have so many symptoms,” she said. “It’s so great to talk to people who understand, to say ‘Does this happen to you, too?’ ” MATT MESLEY Matt Mesley’s initiation to the ups and downs of lupus started when he was in high school and was suddenly stricken with a bizarre set of symptoms. His skin itched and he was so tired he couldn’t get out of bed. The normally ener- getic athlete was out of school for two months and doctors thought it might be every- thing from STDs to cancer. After months of tests the symptoms suddenly went away, only to return during Mr. Mesley’s first year of uni- versity in the form of a cut on his arm. “It started growing until it was the size of a loonie,” he said. “Then one day my entire arm was covered in a rash.” A trip to the emergency room led Mr. Mesley to a spe- cialist, where he was finally diagnosed with lupus. The 21-year-old, who re- cently finished his second year of a health sciences pro- gram at UOIT, said his friends and classmates didn’t know much about the disease when he first started talking about it. “No one knew what it was or how severe it could be,” he said. He said he hopes that will change as things like the local fundraiser walk and fun fair become more high profile. “It’s a hard thing for anyone to live with if you’re younger like me or if you’re older,” he said. “The best thing would be more money for research and more awareness of what it is.” Want to help? Lace up those shoes The second annual Walk for Lupus, Fun Fair and Silent Auction takes place Saturday, Sept. 13, at Lakeview Park in Oshawa. One hundred per cent of the proceeds will go to Lupus Ontario, the Canios Research Project and the Geoff Carr Fellowship. This year’s event will fea- ture live music, jumping castles, face painting, cookie decorating, craft table and carnival games. Prizes will be awarded to the top individual and team fundraisers. To register as a walker, vol- unteer or donate to the silent auction, contact Shannon Crawford at 905-697-2941 or durhamlupus@live.com. Yet, with a bit of imagination, it is always possible to create an agree- able and welcoming setting where we can find a wealth of vegetation. However, it must be remembered that it isn’t always simple to develop a small area. On the contrary! For example, a huge flowerbed too big for the area, a badly designed path or invasive plants can, in the short term, discourage the best of intentions. Details shouldn’t be neglected as you have to feel com- pletely at ease in this type of garden, which may only measure 50 square metres. Start by planting trees and shrubs which will become the basis of the garden. Be sure to choose slow growing, compact plants. To give the impression of size, it is better to progressively reduce the width of the lawn right to the end of your lot. Learn how to create volume. To make the most of the area available, you can build pergolas or procure some arches on which climbing plants can grow. Finally, remember that in a small garden everything will be noticed more quickly than in a larger expanse. It’s important, therefore, that each plant, ornament or structure integrates well with the whole. ENTERTAINMENT ✦ E-mail information to Judi Bobbitt, jbobbitt@durhamregion.com ✦ Get local 24/7 newsdurhamregion.com Summer brings Shakespeare, the call of bagpipes and jazz on the train By Betty Zyvatkauskas DURHAM — On a hot summer night the best entertainment is found outdoors, under starry skies. That’s why I’m looking forward to Drift- wood Theatre’s return to several parks around Durham Region with a produc- tion of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s much-loved tale of star-crossed young lov- ers. Now in its 14th season, this travelling theatre company earns kudos from critics and cheers from audiences for its perfor- mances at outdoor venues across southern Ontario. Artistic director Jeremy Smith is known for his clever use of a cappella music in productions that are big on imagination, but much lower on budget. Driftwood opens its summer run of Romeo and Juliet with a special gala at Oshawa’s Parkwood on July 15 (advance purchase tickets re- quired). Performances are scheduled for Pickering’s Esplanade Park on July 16, Ro- tary Park in Ajax on July 17, Palmer Park in Port Perry on July 20, Whitby’s Celebration Square on July 22, the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington on Aug.10 and Greenwood’s Community Centre on Aug. 17. 905-576- 2396, www.driftwoodtheatre.com. This is a musical month in Durham as the skirl of bagpipes signals the start of the annual Highlands of Durham Games, July 25 to 27 at Elgin Park in Uxbridge. A ceilidh (musical performance) kicks off this all-Scottish celebration on the Friday night, followed by two days of highland dancing, massed bands and brawny fel- lows tossing all manner of heavy objects, from cabers (wooden poles) to hammers. Of course, you can expect all the usual kilt-swirling stuff, but even non-Scots will enjoy livestock events like the Scottish dog show, featuring the rare and oh-so-cute Dandie Dinmont terrier. 1-888-253-5552, www.highlandsofdurhamgames.com. Two of my favourite things: jazz and trains met in one great event a couple of weeks ago when the York-Durham Heri- tage Railway held a special event to cel- ebrate the start of its 2008 season. As we pulled out of the beautifully restored Uxbridge station, the band struck up the Duke Ellington classic, Take the A Train, setting a party mood for our short excur- sion. If commuter trains were more like this, I’m sure many of us would be happy to leave our cars at home. The railway’s next jazz trains run on July 20 and Aug. 17. Young train buffs will enjoy the railway’s popular Teddy Bear Day on Sunday, July 13, when kids (and bears) ride free with an adult. 905-852- 3696, www.ydhr.on.ca. PORT PERRY — Timing, as they say, is ev- erything. The Kent Farndale Gallery is showing its good sense of timing with its new exhibit, Situ- ation, Positioning, Location by Toronto artist Margie Kelk. Through her works, she looks at the relationship between Chinese culture and the country’s rush into the 21st century. This comes in the month before the Olympics are held in China for the first time. The works in the exhibit, which runs until July 30, are derived from her recent book, Caged, in which she equates the Chinese love of caged birds with the situation of people who live in poverty and poor conditions in China, she said. They, too, are imprisoned, she said. “It’s something that makes you think during this Olympic year,” Kelk said. She uses traditional Chinese iconography (opera masks, horses, calligraphy) to highlight China’s ancient craftsmanship, the beauty of its landscapes, drawing more attention to the ravages of industrial pollution, she said. While travelling in China with her husband on his business trips, she saw many parts of China tourists don’t normally see, particularly the coal-mining region of Datong, to the west of Beijing. She said lumps of coal lined streets and were piled in doorways and coal dust was everywhere. “This sad reality was quite a contrast to the graceful flowers and singing birds found in so much traditional Chinese art and handiwork, examples of which were for sale at the various tourist sites I visited,” she said. That’s where the mix of tradition and today’s China comes in. There are six framed photography-based wall panels, each featuring a single subject. In one, a tomb figure of hero warrior Zhong Kui shows him deriving his strength from his sword and fan, each emblazoned with a de- signer logo. Kelk has visited China six times and is learn- ing Mandarin. She is president of Propeller Centre for Visual Arts in Toronto. She has ex- hibited her works in group shows throughout Canada and the United States. By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Pickering Olympian Perdita Fel- icien will decide very soon if Beijing is in her immedi- ate future. The 27-year-old hurdler, who currently has a med- ical exemption owing to a troublesome foot injury suffered in training in February, is expected to an- nounce officially next week if she will attempt to meet the qualifying standard for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games. She must run the Olympic ‘B’ standard in the women’s 100-metre hurdles of 13.11 seconds by July 22 in order to be named to the Canadian Olympic track and field team. “I’m still holding out to the possibility that it will happen. They have races I can run on the ‘B’ or ‘C’ circuit (in Europe). If I’m healthy and able to, I can hop on a plane and give it a go. “I’m an optimist and I’m staying positive. It’s never over until it’s over. I’m going to use every single day and every single hour I have to my advantage. Time isn’t re- ally on my side. Is 95 per cent good enough, or do I have to be that 100 per cent? It’s hard sitting on the sidelines. I’m someone who likes being out there in the heat of battle. I have to use my time wisely and well. There’s no time to feel sorry for myself.” Although the two-time world champion acknowl- edges she’s taken into account advice from her doc- tors and especially from her long-time coach Gary Winckler, the decision will ultimately be hers wheth- er or not to give up on competing in her third Olym- pic Games, having previously competed in 2000 in Sydney and in 2004 in Athens. “I have to look back (on the decision) one day and be at peace. I’m not going to let anyone try to sway me one way or the other and no one really has. What- ever decision I make, I will deal with that decision, what it means to me and how to get over that. I will be at peace with whatever happens.” Felicien says she’s currently staying in Mississauga and has been intensely focused on her training each day at York University among other GTA facilities she trains at. She notes she’s received medical clearance to perform the full gamut of training, including hur- dling, albeit at a slower pace and at a lower volume than she traditionally does leading up to the Olym- pics. “Yeah, I’m hurdling very slowly a few times here and there, but at tolerance levels. I don’t want to do too much, but I do as much as I can.” The stress fracture on her left foot has healed at a rapid pace, she says, and currently she labels it as “structurally sound”. She notes, however, her doctors believe she may be susceptible to other injuries due to her relative inactivity while undergoing rehabilita- tion on her foot over the past few months. The foot’s “structurally sound, but the doctors want to take care of the other parts of the body, my Achilles heel, calves and knees, which are not as conditioned as they normally are,” she explained. Felicien says it was a bittersweet experience to attend the Canadian Track and Field Champion- ships in Windsor last week and not compete, having received a medical exemption from Athletics Canada to keep her eligibility for the Olympics. In Windsor, the six-time national 100-metre hurdles gold medallist fulfilled obligations to her sponsors, including speaking engagements and signing autographs, and being there to support the other athletes, including the medal ceremony for the women’s 100-metre hurdles where she handed out medals to long-time teammates Angela Whyte, of Edmonton, and Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, of Whitby. The low point, however, was attending the func- tion where the Canadian Olympic track and field team was named. She looked on as other athletes received team jackets while she sat in the audience. “At the breakfast of champions, I was there but I wasn’t technically on the team. Those couple of hours were extremely hard for me. They were un- bearable. I wanted to leave.” If her decision is to stay home from Beijing, Fe- licien says she can live with it, mainly because of the support of her family and especially her mother, Cathy Moe. “My mom’s even said that if I don’t go, we’ll have a barbecue and watch (the Olympics) with the rest of the world; we’ll be fine. I didn’t give her enough credit. She’s been fine with my decisions and my big- gest supporter.” If she chooses not to go, Felicien says she will shut down her training for the rest of the summer, content herself with staying home among friends and family and resume training in the fall with an eye toward competing in the indoor season overseas. She does, however, have a goal to compete at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Berlin, Germany. You will never be forgotten even though it has been 5 years, it feels as though we have just lost you. The tears roll down in your memory and our hearts still ache but we know you are still with us. Time has not healed the pain but we are comforted by your closeness to us. Your image is always in front of us at home, and we still feel your love. In our hearts we feel you, and in the faces of our family we see you you are the light that shines in all of us. We hear your voice we feel your presence and we see your smile. We hear others speak of you, and all we can do is listen and respond with our tears. We fondly remember the time we used to sit and talk, and now we can only talk about you. You have given us the strength to carry on and we use the lessons of love, caring and respect you taught us every day. We carry your name with pride and we don’t want you to worry about us. . While we miss you so much we will always be the kids you brought up with so much love. You taught us to be honest and kind, that life was full of possibilities, but most of all, you showed us how to be compassionate, strong and devoted. We are loved by our Mom, and with you being around us. You will never be forgotten We will always honour you by Sharing with others your memory. God Bless You, Endless Love From All of Us In Memoriam Anne P. Vibert Loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who left us suddenly July 12, 2007 after a very brief stay in Oshawa Lakeridge Hospital as of a result of cancer and I's medication. Born in Newfoundland and moved to Ontario and had a full career as a nurse while raising 5 children. She was a very selfless mother who would of done anything for her children. She cared for everyone and had a soft spot for animals, not wanting to see anyone or anything suffer or do without. She was a devoted Catholic and I am grateful that she was able to enlightened me. Trusting that she is receiving her just rewards in Heaven, though she is missed here dearly. Always in our hearts and on our minds. We love you Mom. xoxo Thank you God for resurrection ascension in Heaven To Contact Us Call: 1-800-519-9566, 905-668-1838 Apply on-line atApply on-line at www.creditzonecanada.comwww.creditzonecanada.com Bad Credit? THE NEWS ADVERTISER, July 11, 2008 PAGE 31 Pdurhamregion.com Prowlers good as gold at Guelph tournament Pickering bantam girls’ softball team wins title despite being short-staffed PICKERING — With a short bench available, the Pickering Prowlers bantam girls’ softball team was undeterred in its quest for gold. Playing in the Guelph tour- nament on July 5 with only 10 players available due to holidays and injury, the Prowlers defeat- ed Brampton 7-4 in the final to capture the tournament title. Larissa Reffle belted a two- run home run in the final to pace the Prowlers’ attack. De- fensively, Amanda Smart made a gave-saving catch to end the contest. Allie Provis also pro- vided aggressive base running in the final. The Prowlers finished with three wins against Brantford (13-2), Topham Park (12-1), and Brampton in the final. Pick- ering’s lone loss came against Whitby (6-4). Throughout the tournament, the Pickering bantams demon- strated how overall team effort, from top to bottom, along with a focused ‘never-give-up’ attitude can result in a championship. Three pitchers were solid on the mound in the four-game tournament. Reffle and Tara Watson displayed their strength for the first two games, while Katrina Rohrich closed off the final two games with steady con- fidence. The bats came alive in the tournament with Courtney Lum, Caitlyn Halbert, Amanda Smart and Allie Provis leading the way. Defence played a key role in holding off the opposition with great plays from the infield and outfield, which included stellar play from Leanne Savoie, Chel- sea Cross and Kelly McDowell. The Prowlers host their own tournament this Saturday at Pickering’s Kinsmen Park. The team has three more tournament scheduled for the remainder of the season. Steve Rohrich, Derek Cross and Tim Reffle coach the Prowl- ers.
