Bill Parish, representing the Friends of the Ajax Pickering Hospital, asked that Durham withhold the balance of the $3.5 million the Region has committed to the expansion of the hospital’s emergency room. The balance currently sits at $2.3 million. Mr. Parish and his group have been fighting the announced closure of in-pa- tient mental health beds in Ajax. The beds are to be moved to Scarborough’s Cente- nary hospital. “The only way you’ll get their attention is withholding money ... don’t give it to them, don’t give it to them, I say,” Mr. Par- ish said at Wednesday morning’s Regional council meeting. His son, Ajax Mayor Steve Parish, intro- duced the motion to withhold the money. However, since there was no prior notice of the motion, council procedure required a two-thirds majority for it to be consid- ered. With a vote of 15-10, it failed by one vote. Of the Ajax and Pickering councillors at the meeting, only Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan and Pickering Councillor Rick John- son voted against introducing the mo- tion. Before the vote, Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) president and CEO Rik Ganderton made the case for keeping the money. Moving the mental health beds will save the hospital $600,000 annu- ally and at the same time crisis services in Ajax will be increased, he said. If RVHS doesn’t take steps to reduce costs, it’s facing annual deficits in the tens of millions of dollars every year. “Contrary to popular belief and rumour, this is not a machiavellian plot to elimi- nate the Ajax-Pickering hospital as a full- service hospital,” he said, adding the real stress in Ajax-Pickering was in the emer- gency room. Mr. Ganderton said the loss of the Re- gion’s money would put the emergency room expansion in jeopardy. “If you don’t get it (the need for the money), Rouge Valley is bankrupt. We don’t have three-and-a-half million bucks from somewhere else,” he told council- lors. The RVHS president faced tough ques- tions from councillors who were con- cerned, including questions about the new birthing centre set to open in Scar- borough. Mr. Ganderton said the situation would be the same as today, where Dur- ham residents would go to Ajax-Pickering for regular births and difficult births would be transferred to a hospital with a neo- natal unit, which Centenary provides. Mayor Parish gave notice he will re-in- troduce the motion in September. The Durham District School Board added $23,000 in out- standing fees to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Associa- tion (OPSBA) to its 2008-2009 operating budget, worth more than $588 million. Almost $99 million for capital projects was also approved. “That in my time here is unprecedented,” said Pickering Trustee Sherry Croteau of the capital budget. More than $42 million is for building the new unnamed Tormina and Olde Winchester schools in Brooklin and the Hamlet and Meadows schools in Ajax. It’s also for anticipat- ed cost increases to the Pickering High School and new north Oshawa secondary school projects well underway. As well, the board plans to buy a site for the unnamed Castlefields school in Ajax with education development charges. More than $17 million supports Good Places to Learn projects such as major renovations. To meet the education ministry’s primary class-size re- duction (20 students to one teacher per class) the board is spending more than $36 million on school additions. The 30 portables added require $194,292 more than originally budgeted. The upcoming school year also provides more money to block budgets allocated to individual schools. “And our kids feel that right away,” Trustee Croteau said, and added she’s happy to pass the budget. Moments later, she voted against Oshawa Trustee Mi- chael Barrett’s motion to adjust the operating budget for the unpaid OPSBA fine. The charge against the school board is for not providing six-months’ notice when it left the OPSBA almost two years ago, only to rejoin about a year later. The $23,000 is a compromised amount and represents about half of what the board was originally fined. “For me it’s not about the $23,000, it’s simply about the principle at the heart of this,” said Trustee Croteau. She at- tended the OPSBA meeting before the board rejoined and was told there would be no extra billing if it rejoined and that it was a “wooing” process. She said the onus was on the OPSBA to tell the board it needed six months’ notice and Durham did not get the six months of service it would have received had notice been provided. Whitby Trustee John Dolstra and Ajax Trustee Lisa Hill also opposed the motion. “I think if OPSBA’s in a position to either pay them or they’ll sue us, let’s give them six months’ notice now and pay them,” said Trustee Dolstra. life • style • solutions OSHAWA www.sklargallery.com Exceptional Warranty Superior Construction Fast Delivery 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 905-723-4561 Hours: Mon.• Tues.• Wed. 10-6, Thurs.• Fri. 10-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun.11-5 Durham’s Newest & Largest Sklar Peppler Furnishings Store! floor MODEL clearance ONELOC A T I O N ONL YOSH A W A Sofas • Loveseats • Chairs • Recliners OSHAWA *Credit equal to the value of the GST and PST. It’s fantastic news for our company,” said Laurie Swami, director, licensing – nuclear generation development. The government’s decision to select OPG is “a reflection of a couple of things -- the performance of our plants and the support we get from the com- munity. We’ve had very good support,” Ms. Swami said during a meeting of the Pickering nuclear stations’ Com- munity Advisory Council on Tuesday. “All our staff are very excited. The work they’re doing is appreciated. It’s all-around fantastic news,” she said.THE LATEST IN DURHAM’S COMMUNITIESnewsdurhamregion.comBut not everyone thrilled with new nuclear news By Jennifer Stone jstone@durhamregion.com CLARINGTON — Not everyone is thrilled with the news the Province has selected Darlington as the site for two new nuclear reactors. That decision, coupled with an an- nouncement about the plan to either refurbish or replace reactors at the Bruce Nuclear plant, points to the Province’s intention to use nuclear as its major power source in coming years. That’s a bad idea, said Green- peace’s Shawn-Patrick Stensil. “What the government should have done, should be doing, is it should be looking at a gamut of other options to fill that gap (in energy production) which are clean and quick and cheap- er to deploy,” he said. Many renew- ables can be deployed quite quickly and there are ways to have more lo- calized power production, Mr. Stensil said, pointing to the fact 80,000 homes a year are built in the GTA. “One thing we do very badly in On- tario is that we get more of our energy from a few centralized plants,” he said. Instead, smaller energy and district heating systems could be deployed as quickly as home construction occurs, at a neighbourhood level. Nuclear has a number of problems, Mr. Stensil said. Not only is there the potential for accident, but waste dis- posal remains an issue. “The radioac- tive waste problem isn’t resolved,” Mr. Stensil said. “They built the first gen- eration of reactors without any idea of where and how we would deal with that waste over the next million years.” By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com WHITBY — Durham emergency work- ers are prepared for a nuclear disaster after going though a detailed exercise on Thurs- day. The Durham Emergency Management Of- fice (DEMO) took the lead in organizing the event that saw the Iroquois Park Sports Cen- tre in Whitby turned into a nuclear emer- gency worker centre. The centre would be set up if the Province declared a nuclear emergency. That would happen if there’s a potential for the release of radiation. Iroquois Park would be used in a real emergency and workers would head there to be checked for contamination and be decontaminated if necessary. “If this scenario happened, it’s a large- scale nuclear emergency,” said Jennifer Knox, manager of public affairs for Dar- lington Nuclear. “It has never happened in Canada’s nuclear history.” About 200 people participated in the ex- ercise, said DEMO director Ivan Ciuciura, whose office conducts similar exercises every year. “You write the plan, you train the people and you test the plan and the test is the exer- cise portion,” he said. The scenario for the day was an emer- gency at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. Almost 20 organizations were repre- sented including, police, fire and EMS work- ers, utility employees and public works de- partments. GO Transit and Durham Region Transit workers were also involved as they may be called on to help evacuate residents in an emergency. Each worker was fitted with a dosimeter that would monitor radiation exposure be- fore being sent out into the field. GO Transit driver Bill Bygrove went through a scenario that had both him and his bus contaminated with radiation. His bus went through a spray wash in the parking lot, while he himself had to go through the decontamination process inside the sports centre. “Very good, actually, informative,” he said of the exercise, “I think everything’s pretty well-laid out.” Ontario Power Generation (OPG) workers checked Mr. Bygrove and his bus with a contamination survey meter. “It’s very sensitive. Smoke detectors emit small amounts of radiation and that would register on that,” said Ms. Knox. If a worker were contaminated in real life, a vacuum or a special cloth would be used to remove small spots of contamination or they may be ordered to take their clothes off and shower. “It’s similar to procedures that would be followed at the station if an employee were to be contaminated,” said Ms. Knox. At the end of the day, Mr. Ciuciura said local workers are prepared for the worst. “What it does is bring everyone together and makes Durham Region better prepared for an emergency.” (877) 857-2333 ID# 194015 $309,000 608 Woodmount Cres. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 20, 2008 durhamregion.com T he family and I spent a weekend downtown recently. A good friend kindly offered to look after the dog for us while we were away. We were only going to be gone for an afternoon, a night and the next morn- ing. But when your pooch is the canine equivalent of a cross between Liberace and Mariah Carey, you have to take steps. He knew we were going of course. He knew it from the moment we got up that morning. I’m not sure how dogs do this but the instant the idea of a car ride or the word “walk” is even formed in your thoughts, they are already in the vehicle or standing at the door, tail wagging expectantly. Our current dog, as I have alluded, is somewhat on the needy side. He is also outrageously, queenishly gay. I’m quite serious. He is fanatically neat, a snappy dresser, has very little time for puppies or children and will only cuddle if I put show tunes on. He was found, the Animal Shelter folks told us, abandoned at the side of the road. I can only assume that this was the result of some dispute between he and the rest of the doggie “Boy Band” he’d been touring with. He is, if nothing else, a diva. This is why, again, careful mea- sures must be taken to make sure he is tended to if we have to be away for even the briefest period. You see, the wonderful and unfortu- nately often annoying thing about dogs, and dolphins too I imagine, although I’ve never owned one . . . is their sentience. They are just too damn smart for their own good. And married to all of that intelligence is a good deal of guile. And though you may take all the steps and measures in the world to make sure he is kept comfortable and fed and played with and that, God forbid, his wet, black nose does not get out of joint, sometimes it’s just not enough. Dogs hold grudges. After being away for a week, I once had an English Mastiff drop a sizeable bowel movement into my gym bag. No easy feat. He was a very big dog and it was a very small bag. And this was an animal with a fair amount of self- confidence. Needy dogs, on the other hand, whack-job divas, go even further . . . they understand that, in the words of Oscar Wilde, “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” And so it came to pass that we arrived home from our junket to the city and after a brief inspection everything looked just fine. No tattered pillows, no surpris- es on the rug and Judy Garland happily and apparently innocently wagging his tail at our return. There was even, after my humming a few bars of a Streisand ditty, the briefest of cuddles. All’s well that ends well. I was tired that night. Bone tired. We had done a lot of walking downtown and I was thoroughly looking forward to some sack time. Yawning pleasantly, I threw back the comforter, got into bed and slid my feet down into the cool sheets. Correction, the cold sheets. The cold, wet sheets. The cold, wet, urine- soaked sheets. Message received and noted. Durham resident Neil Crone is an actor- comic-writer who saves some of his best lines for his columns. Dog days of spring lead to unpleasant surprise Province ought to follow advice In keeping with making our world greener, the Region is looking to make businesses pay the full cost to dispose of the packaging they produce. Durham’s works committee recently endorsed a discussion paper from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario asking the Province to bring forth legis- lation that would make industry pay for disposal of packaging. Such provincial law would save the Region $4 million per year in disposal costs and, together with the $9.3 mil- lion the region expects to receive in blue box revenues and subsidies this year, would be a substantial gain for the taxpayer. What to do with our waste has been a burning issue for years now, with incin- eration the lead option on the table. Since much of what is thrown out is excess packaging that can’t be recycled, it only stands to reason business should pay its fair share. Environmental watchdogs have been pushing for years to have businesses reduce the amount of non-recyclable packaging they use in their products. But such pressures usually result in action only when there is a price to pay for inaction. If companies know they’ll have to cover a hefty fee to get rid of the pack- aging they produce, they’ll strive to reduce it over time -- a win-win situa- tion for everyone. With the Region pushing for an ambi- tious 70 per cent waste diversion goal by 2010, meaning just 30 per cent of all waste would go to landfill or incinera- tion, every dollar that can offset costs means less money coming out of tax- payers’ collective pockets. Such provincial legislation would fol- low similar moves by the Province to increase recyclables -- think of the push by the LCBO for bottle returns and the decision to eliminate plastic bags in grocery stores several years from now. It’s all part of a vast array of moves to make Ontario a cleaner, greener place to live. Having companies pay to dis- pose of packaging should ultimately result in less packaging, less waste and a cleaner province. Mr. Buckley, who was joined by CAW national president Buzz Har- grove, plant chairman Keith Os- borne and truck plant chairman Greg Moffatt, said the 2 1/2-hour discussion did not go well. The union officials met with Dean Munger, executive director of labour relations for GM North America, to talk about the com- pany’s plan to close the Oshawa plant in 2009. Nothing has changed since GM made the June 3 announcement that will put as many as 2,600 peo- ple out of work, Mr. Buckley said. “General Motors is still holding their position that they are going to close the Oshawa truck plant,” he said. Mr. Buckley said his request that GM suspend its decision was refused. He said he has asked the corporation to tell his union members what products they are going to release to the market in the next year and a half. “We want our share of the pie here in Canada, particularly here in Oshawa,” Mr. Buckley said. GM spokeswoman Patty Faith said the company does not com- ment on what is said in private meetings. The CAW ended its blockade in front of GM headquarters at 6:40 a.m. Monday, 20 minutes before the deadline set by a judge re- quiring union members to leave. The CAW was allowed to keep 20 people in front of the building and have an information picket, but chose not to. durhamregion.com PICKERING SUPERSTORE TOYOTA 557 Kingston Rd., Pickering 905-420-9000 www.pickering.toyota.ca IT’S BUSINESS AS USUAL AT REAL PEOPLE SELLING GREAT CARS! Durham could make additional $4 million By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — If the companies that make packaging would pay for the full cost of dis- posing it, Durham could stand to gain about $4 million for its waste program. A discussion paper from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), recently endorsed by the Region’s works committee, is asking the Province to enact legislation that would see industry pay the full disposal cost for packaging and printed material. Right now, industry is supposed to pay 50 per cent of the cost of recycling materials in the blue box. No payments are made to mu- nicipalities for material that ends up in the garbage or in green bins. “The blue box plan was a good start, but it’s not enough given that waste management is a real burden on the municipal tax base and these burdens should be borne by those who produce the material we are forced to manage,” said Craig Bartlett, Durham’s man- ager of waste management. He said industry should be responsible for the material from the cradle to grave. AMO recommends phasing in the plan with industry picking up the tab for 100 per cent of the blue box costs and 50 per cent of green bin and garbage disposal costs for the first three years and then picking up the full disposal costs after that. If this were to happen, Durham would stand to gain about $4 million for its waste program annually. It costs Ontario municipalities $234 million per year to manage packaging and printed paper in their waste, a quarter of all costs associated with waste. “If the industry is forced to pay 100 per cent, they may set up systems where when you’re done with that water bottle, you’re done with the steel can, you can take it back,” said Mr. Bartlett. According to the Region’s solid waste management budget, Durham is expected to receive $9.3 million in 2008 from blue box revenues and subsidies, including the sale of recovered material. “We’re one of the larger recipients of blue box money just because of our ongoing atten- tion to efficiency and effectiveness within our program,” said Mr. Bartlett. Since blue boxes started hitting local curbs, there’s been changes in the material going into them. For example, municipalities used to recoup larger amounts of aluminum when people were throwing pop cans into the waste. Recently, the soft drink industry has moved towards lighter-weight plastic bottles. How- ever, recovered aluminum sells for roughly $2,000 per tonne while plastic pop bottles sell for about $400. It’s also tougher to find mar- kets for the plastic. As well, there are many materials on the market that aren’t recyclable, such as plastic cans with metal lids used for things like soup. Because the plastic and the metal are fused, it’s considered contaminated and can’t be recycled, said Mr. Bartlett. In fact, the AMO report points out, produc- ers who create packaging that’s not recyclable are exempt from fees. This means the current blue box program indirectly encourages in- dustry to move to non-recyclable packaging. There are examples of increased producer responsibility measures in countries like Ger- many where the end result has been industry taking steps to reduce the amount of packag- ing they produce or enhanced recyclability. The AMO discussion paper is being circu- lated among other municipalities for endorse- ment and it will be brought to the Province. Inspired by her father, Jack, who lost his bat- tle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in October 2005, Ms. Moore has once again taken the reins and is co-ordinating the 2008 edition of the Durham Walk For ALS, which will take place June 21 in Port Perry. The ALS Society of Ontario’s signature event, the fundraiser secured $1.1 million in donations last year; about $30,000 came from the Durham event, which saw teams from across the region converge upon Port Perry’s fairgrounds for a sim- ple, but effective, effort. And, buoyed by the success of last year’s fund- raiser, as well as the early numbers already in ahead of this year’s effort, Ms. Moore is confident last year’s $30,000 mark will be shattered. Already, said Ms. Moore, 22, about $6,000 has been raised primarily through online donations. That’s up from approximately $600 at this time last year, she explained. The goal this year, she added, is to reach the $35,000 plateau. But, admitted Ms. Moore, hitting the $30,000 mark again would be “pretty good, too.” Of the funds raised, 70 per cent of the proceeds will go towards equipment and support services programs in Durham while the remainder will be forwarded to the ALS Society of Canada’s research programs. ALS is a rapidly progressive and ultimately fatal neuromuscular disorder that causes the degen- eration of a select group of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the nerve cells die, people with ALS lose control of their muscles, which makes breathing, eating and even smiling almost impossible. What’s disturbing, said Ms. Moore, is that the number of people afflicted with the disorder is in- creasing, which makes the need for support, and research funding, much more necessary. “I know what it’s like to go through (the battle with ALS) and this walk means everything to me,” said Ms. Moore. “I wouldn’t miss it because it brings me closer to my dad and you get a chance to meet people who have gone through the same thing as you. For me, doing this has helped the grieving process, it’s obviously hard to lose some- one to a disease that is so random.” Registration for the walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. on June 21 at the fairgrounds, located at the cor- ner of Reach Street and Old Simcoe Road in Port Perry’s north end. The walk will kick-off at 10 a.m. and will take participants on a leisurely five-kilometre stroll south along Old Simcoe Road and east on Mc- Donald Street before retracing their steps through some of Port Perry’s most historic and beautiful neighbourhoods. A barbecue will be held following the walk for all participants and there will be live entertain- ment as well. For more information, call Ms. Moore at 905-985-7194. The Centre targets young people, mostly secondary and post-secondary students, but offers help to anyone in need. It acts as a connecting party between employers and students to help students attain summer em- ployment. There are many different types of jobs avail- able through the Centre, from landscaping to retail, and whatever is posted by employers is given to the students. Students can also find more casual labour, such as residential work such as babysitting or lawncare. “Employers seek us out by phone or we go and see the employers ourselves,” said Nina Damsbaek, lead youth services officer. “We ask them if there are any jobs available for students.” She also recommends posting and search- ing for jobs on www.jobbank.gc.ca Jobs can range from part-time, full-time, summer employment or permanent for stu- dents. The Centre also provides information on resume building, interview advice, health and safety tips, labour laws and more. Ms. Damsbaek said that there are two dif- ferent ways to search for jobs: the hidden and visual market. The visual market, namely public advertisements, only represents 15 per cent of the jobs available. The hidden market represents 80 to 90 per cent of avail- able jobs and represents students physically seeing employers themselves and seeking out employment. She also suggested that both students and employers use their posting service; employ- ers can put up advertisements for jobs, and students can search for job openings. “We are a great place to start (looking for jobs) with if you are unsure what direction you wish to go in,” Ms. Damsbaek said. The Centre will also be hosting the annual Job Fair, which Ms. Damsbaek said is benefi- cial to both students and employers because the latter get students looking for jobs and students have a group of employers who are all hiring at the same time. The event is on June 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the McClean Community Centre in Ajax. “Our main goal is promoting employers and homeowners to employ young people; they’re flexible, hard working and are an in- credible resource.” The Centre is at 320 Harwood Ave. in Ajax and is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on The Ajax Service Canada Centre for Youth, call 905-428-8654 or e-mail nina.damsbaek@servicecanada. gc.ca. With the additional demand on utilities during the summer season, the energy management team at Canadian Tire has put together the following suggestions to help lessen the impact of your utility bills this summer: • One of the easiest changes you can make to your home is to lighting. By switching to energy-efficient CFL bulbs, you can save up to 78% on energy costs. CFL’s have the added advantage of lasting up to 10X longer than traditional bulbs and, because you won’t have to replace them as often, you’ll create less landfill. • Another great way to save energy is by installing dimmer switches in your home. Dimmers can reduce energy consumption by up to 20%. Similarly, motion sensor lights on the exterior of your home can provide energy savings by switching lights off automatically when not detecting movement. • Timers are also an effective way to re- duce energy consumption as they can be pro- grammed to use electricity only when it’s needed. • Look for Energy Star rated lights. These lights are the most energy ef- ficient models available and can also be found in many décor options to suit your own personal taste. • Install ceiling fans. During hot weath- er a ceiling fan will create a cool breeze and keep the air circulating in your home. • An evening barbeque is a great al- ternative to using the oven or stove, which both generate heat on an al- ready hot day. You can also use your microwave or toaster oven in place of the stove or oven. • Dry laundry on a clothesline in your backyard where permitted or in the basement to reduce energy consumption. Available exclusively at Canadian Tire is the innovative WallFix clothes dryer. Clothes dry- ers use about 900 kilowatt hours of electricity a year on average. By hanging just 25 per cent of those laundry loads out to dry, you could save about $30 a year on electricity bills. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 20, 2008 PAGE 23 A/Pdurhamregion.com AJAX — Actions by the Rouge Valley Health System warrant an intervention by the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC), says a community activist. Maurice Brenner sent a letter to the chief commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, asking him to either initiate a complaint or conduct a public inquiry or re- view of the decision to transfer the in-patient mental health unit from the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital to Scarborough. “Those directly impacted nor their fami- lies and advocates were never consulted in a fashion consistent with the guidelines set out by the Commission,” Mr. Brenner said in the letter. The OHRC defines a mental disorder as a disability and requires that “Every person has a right to equal treatment with respect to ser- vices, goods and facilities, without discrimina- tion because of ‘disability’,” Mr. Brenner said. In the letter, he said the removal of the beds will negatively affect and deny equal rights and opportunities for people with mental disorders to be treated without facing hardships, and to the family members, friends or colleagues who make up the support network, “which is con- trary to the Ontario Human Rights Code.” Ajax, Pickering, Clarington and Durham Re- gion councils support the request.BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES, IN MEMORIAMS AND MOREmilestonesdurhamregion.comHospital complaint sent to Human Rights Commission *Prices, specifications & conditions subject to change without notice. The event was previously held at the Pickering library, but due to the show’s popularity it had to move. “It was growing. So we decided that we really needed a bigger and more public venue and the Pickering Town Centre heard our call and have been wonderfully cooperative,” Jacobs says. The show features a wide va- riety of performers, including the cello trio of Kevin Odorico, Jireh Wang and Young Ho Yoo. The three are up-and-coming talent from the Young Artist Per- formance Academy at the Royal Conservatory of Music. The trio performs at 2 p.m. “It’s an opportunity to have young people who are showing some ability in music take their music to another level by per- forming in public,” says David Stone, one of the event’s master of ceremonies. Music Madness also features the dancing of 14-year-old Megan Wood. A student of the Denise Les- ter Dance Academy, she’s been competing since she was seven and takes the stage at 1:50 p.m. The event is part of the Dur- ham West Arts Centre’s goal to build a performing arts centre in Durham while offering com- munity arts programming in the interim. Music Madness is an oppor- tunity to see some of Durham’s future stars. “It’s just a win-win for the com- munity, the kids who are playing, and the kids who will hear them play,” Stone says. Music Madness is on Satur- day, June 21 on the centre court stage of the Pickering Town Cen- tre. The first set runs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the second from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Admission is free. One of the most popular and successful musicals in recent memory, this deliciously goofy revue centers on four young, eager male singers killed in a car crash in the 1950s on the way to their fi rst big concert, and now miraculously revived for the posthumous chance to fulfi ll their dreams and perform the show that never was. The large, colourful and dra- matic work must have struck the juror the same way because the high school student’s work has been awarded Best of Show in the 40th annual juried art show by Oshawa Art Association, on now at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery. “It’s just excellent lines, co- lour, movement and execution,” said Marissa Sweet, the associa- tion member who organizes the show. “We were blown away by it. It’s so beautiful.” The painting features three young men examining the bared side of a fourth young man. Sweet said she sees it as a modern ver- sion of Jesus Christ, post res- urrection, showing his disciples his crucifixion wounds. One man is reaching to touch the other’s side. Perhaps he is Doubting Thomas, the disciple who had to see and touch Jesus’s wounds before he’d believe, Sweet said. “The symbolism is obvious,” she said. Ajax resident Determann, she said, is just graduating high school and will be going on to study art at the Ontario College of Art and Design and will surely have a great career. It’s the second year in a row that a young artist, and one from Ajax, has taken top prize in the juried show. In 2007, it was Jen- nifer Pereria, who had just fin- ished her first year of university studying art. She’s also won with an oil. Sweet and club president Anne Labelle-Johnson said it’s great to see young artists entering and winning the competition. They’d also like to see them join the as- sociation. Rock wants to get back on a roll Senior ‘B’ lacrosse team hopes to break off losing streak in Owen Sound Saturday AJAX — The Ajax-Pickering Rock hope to bounce back on Saturday after absorbing a pair of losses in OLA senior ‘B’ lacrosse last weekend. The Rock travel to Owen Sound’s Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre to meet the reigning league champion Owen Sound Woodsmen (5-4) on Sat- urday night in their lone league contest of the weekend. Saturday’s contest marks the first meeting between the two clubs since last season’s league championship series, won by the Woodsmen in a three-game sweep in the best-of-five affair. The Rock’s OLA Senior ‘B’ record plunged to 4-6 on the season with back-to- back losses last week- end, dropping a 10-6 decision to the Mohawk Stars and a 9-7 loss to the Norwood Nitro. Jason Henhawk was a one-man wrecking crew for the Mohawk Stars, at the expense of the Rock in Pickering last Saturday night. Henhawk scored six goals and added two assists in powering the Stars past the Rock. Travis Bland was the most productive player on the floor for the Rock, with a goal and two assists. Clem D’Orazio and Jamie Plun- kett each had a goal and an assist for the Rock against Mohawk. On the road in Norwood last Friday, despite a six-point per- formance by team captain Mark Craig, the Rock were edged 9- 7. Craig scored three goals and added three assists in the losing cause. Rookie Travis Bland also registered six points (two goals, four assists). Plunkett also added a goal and two assists for the Rock against Norwood. After Saturday’s game in Owen Sound, the Rock will have three games remaining in the OLA se- nior ‘B’ regular-season sched- ule. Takima Keane, an 18- year-old guard, was one of 23 elite players invited from across the country to compete for a spot on the squad, with tryouts slated for Georgian College in Barrie on July 11 and 12. Canada’s junior wom- en’s national team cap- tured a silver medal in the 2006 U18 FIBA Americas Championships in Colo- rado Springs, followed by a ninth-place finish at the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championships in the Slo- vak Re- public. The 2008 Cana- dian squad will seek to im- prove upon that standing, but first must finish within the top four at the FIBA U18 Americas Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from July 23 to 27 to qualify for the FIBA World U19 Cham- pionship for Women in Thailand from July 23 to Aug 2, 2009. Once the final roster has been selected, Canada’s junior women’s national team will train at Georgian College from July 13 to 19 before leaving for Argen- tina. Keane has been part of the Hamilton-based Na- tional Elite Development Academy (NEDA) program for the past two years. She recently signed for a full, four-year athletic scholarship to Cleveland State University, an NCAA Division 1 program. At Cleveland State, she’ll be one of four Canadians on the Vikings women’s basketball roster. Keane was a member of Team Ontario, which cap- tured National Champion- ships in 2004 and 2007, as well as a silver medal in 2005. The 5-foot-10-and-a- half inch guard/forward is one of 13 guards on the national junior tryout ros- ter. Ajax teen gets invite to national tryout Takima Keane AJAX — An Ajax youth golfer captured the top spot in his age group at the Stephen Ames Cup qualifier in Bracebridge last weekend. Patrick Mayhew finished with the tournament’s low score, +7 (151), to win the boys’ 14-16 Division in the event at the South Muskoka Curling and Golf Club. This was Mayhew’s first junior golf tourna- ment and, remarkably, he w iped out his competi- tion and maintained his lead throughout the entire tournament. “I did pretty well, but I think I could have done better”, Mayhew modestly admitted in a press re- lease. “It was a good start for my first tournament and I’m excited to play in another.” Mayhew put together a two-day total of 151 (73, 78) to win the Nike Golf Junior Series tournament title. He finished two strokes better than second-place finisher Nick Maracle of Nobel, Ont. and six strokes ahead of Lucas Kim of To- ronto, the third-place fin- isher. Meanwhile, in the boys’ 17-19 division, Robert Mc- Combe of Claremont fin- ished two strokes back of division winner Spencer Heide of Bradford. McCombe ended up with a two-day score of 156 (82, 74) to finish at +12. Pillars of strength and support, he sorrowfully leaves behind his loving and caring wife Darina (Nedelkoff) Bain, daughter (his "pumpkin") Christina Bain-Butt and her husband Doug, his dear brother Ian, wife Vivien and their children Bradley, Warren and Mikaela; sister Nancy (Kaiser) McEachnie, her husband David (his dearest friend), and their children, Luke and John Craig; sister Merici (Kaiser) Brown, husband Michael and their children, Caitlyn, Angela and Mary Clare; Gerda Shular, mother-in-law ("Mum"); brother-in-laws, George Nedelkoff, Peter Nedelkoff and his wife Lulu (Lourdes) Nedelkoff and their child, Alex; his cousin Jackie Brett (deceased), wife Rita, and their children, Susan, Julie, Lawrence, wife Kelly and their children, Brandon and Elizabeth. David was inspirational in the lives of many, especially his cousin Jennifer Kaiser and her children Jacob and Kayla. He sadly leaves behind cousins in Canada, Scotland, England, along with many friends, neighbours and past co-workers. Predeceased by his parents, Peter and Maisie, David and his brother emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1960. David subsequently went to live with his father's sister, Isa and her husband, Samuel Kaiser (both deceased) and their children Nancy and Merici. David was a graduate of the Niagara School of Horticulture (1969) and worked as a Parks Manager within former Metropolitan Toronto (City of Toronto) Department of Parks and Recreation and retired after 32 years of service. Very active in the community, David passionately embraced his role as President of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for a number of years. He was also an active member and participant in the Knights of Columbus, and willingly gave of his time and energy to community involvement. A special thank you is extended to the VHA nurses, Andrea and Karen, and to the many nurses and volunteers at the Chemo Clinic at Scarborough Centennary Hospital. We also wish to thank the many students at St. Francis de Sales Catholic School and St. Patrick's Catholic School for their spiritual bouquets and uplifting DVD presentation. They warmed our hearts and lifted his spirit. A heartfelt appreciation to all who prayed for David and for the many Mass cards and prayerful wishes he received. The family will receive friends at the McEACHNIE FUNERAL HOME, 28 Old Kingston Road, Pickering Village (Ajax) 905-428-8488 from 7-9 pm on Saturday and from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Sunday. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday June 23, 2008 at St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church (1001 Ravenscroft Rd., Ajax, ON) at 11:30 am. Interment Pine - Ridge Memorial Gardens. Should family or friends so desire, donations to the Rouge Valley Health System - Chemo Clinic, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, or the V.H.A. Nurses would be greatly appreciated. A Book of Condolence may be signed at www.mceachnie-funeral.ca More than 93 per cent of homeowners use a licensed real estate professional when buying or selling a home. Before you decide to ‘fl y solo’ when buying or selling your biggest investment — which is also a complex, time-consuming and fi nancially perilous process —you should consider these questions: Will you really save the real estate commission? When buyers see a home for sale ‘by the owner’, they see a bargain. They imagine the Realtor’s fee going into their pocket, not yours and they are counting on you not knowing what you are doing. Are you familiar with real estate law? Complicated and ever changing, real estate law governs nearly every phase of selling your home. One mis-step, and an entire deal can fall through, or worse, a lawsuit can come your way. How many potential buyers will you reach? Selling a home takes more than just hanging a “For Sale” sign. How will you promote your home? Will you write your own ads? How will you use the Internet, knowing that you’ll have no access to www.mls.ca or the Multiple Listing Service®? Do you have the time? Promoting a home is a full time job, and you may already have one. Will you be able to take calls at any time? How about screening the callers to fi gure out if they’re qualifi ed to buy your home? Not everybody who calls is even suitable to walk through your home, but how do you tell? Do you know the market well enough to get the most for your home? Lacking years of experience, the average do-it-yourselfer is merely guessing at their listing price. Often they set the price too low and miss out on thousands of dollars, or they price their home too high and drive away willing buyers. What about your selling skills? If the personalities of prospective buyers rub you the wrong way, can you still deal with them effectively? What about your own defensiveness when you hear negative comments about your home? Best to keep it at arms length through a Realtor. Do you have the negotiation skills to keep a deal on track? When an offer comes in, emotions can run high with so much money on the line. This is why direct seller- to-buyer deals often end in disaster. Realtors keep negotiations professional and are indispensable when it comes to bargaining with buyers. What to expect from a Realtor? A Realtor’s job is to help you get the most for your home and they remove stress and confusion from the process. Here are just some of the advantages: Your Realtor becomes your home’s champion. When you sign a “Listing Agreement” with your Realtor this is their promise that they will use their skills and resources to get you the best deal for your home. They are also expert home promoters who are connected to a network of other Realtors and their buyers. They know how to write compelling ads for your home, and only Realtors can place your home on the Multiple Listing Service®. Masters of reading the market, Realtors can recommend the best price for your home. Realtors will also help you increase your home’s “sale-ability”. Because you probably have an emotional attachment to your home, you can’t view it objectively. Your Realtor will help you present your home in the best possible light, so buyers will fall in love with it more easily. 10 Questions to ask when hiring a REALTOR®. Home owners should interview a few potential Realtors before deciding on one to sell their home. Here are some smart questions to ask: 1. How long have you been in the business? 2. What is your average list-to-sales-price ratio? 3. How will your marketing plan meet my needs? 4. Will you provide references? 5. What separates you from your competition? 6. May I review documents that I will be asked to sign? 7. How will you help me fi nd other professionals? 8. How much do you charge? 9. What kind of guarantee do you offer? 10. What haven’t I asked you that I need to know? You’re trusting a Realtor with your most valuable possession, your home and they take this responsibility very seriously. Here’s what a realtor’s promise is to you. Your Realtor is highly trained Realtor training is so rigorous that candidates often fail the pre-registration courses. Those who do pass must master a long, diverse list of subjects ranging from housing construction to family law. Your Realtor is continuously trained We keep pace with the times. All licensed Realtors must take continuing education courses to make sure their knowledge on subjects like legal issues and technology are up to date. Your Realtor does everything by the book A licensed Realtor must be registered under provincial laws that govern exactly how real estate can and cannot be traded. These regulations are your legal guarantee of professional behavior. Your Realtor is an ethical businessperson Realtors must adhere to the extensive Code of Ethics of the Canadian Real Estate Association. Several provinces have additional Codes of Ethics governing the behaviour of real estate professionals. Your interests must always be put fi rst. Your dealings with a Realtor are insured For your peace of mind, provincial regulators sponsor consumer protection programs that may require, for instance, that Realtors maintain Errors and Omissions Insurance. Often deposits consumers make in real estate transactions are also insured under these programs. Opportunity for recourse Should you have concerns about the professional behaviour of a Realtor, provincial regulators and your local real estate board or association take these matters very seriously and work quickly to resolve any issues. Your Realtor has access to the real estate board’s Multiple Listing Service®. The MLS® system is the single most powerful tool for buying and selling a home. It is a complex information- sharing and cooperative marketing network created by Realtors to help consumers buy and sell homes. This article courtesy of CREA.
