A leash-free working group has been trying for two years to help Pickering join the dog park trend moving through North America. The committee approved the park for a six-month trial period at the Valley Farm Hydro Lands, located on the east side of Valley Farm Road and north of Finch Avenue. It’s budgeted for $30,000. But not everyone was happy with the location recommended by staff, one of four options seri- ously considered by the group and the City. “I thought it would be Diana Princess of Wales Park,” said Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson. He said his ideal choice is lo- cated in an area many people can walk to. He fears the chosen park will require more people to drive there since the area is not heavily populated. He also said the park will most likely become permanent since they’re spending $30,000. Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell agreed a park in the downtown core is more suitable. “We don’t have enough room for parking here unless we physi- cally build one, which will have costs looking much different,” she said. But director of operations and emergency services Everett Bunts- ma said the City won’t go over budget, including building a gran- ular parking lot. He also said the park was chosen because more community opposition came in re- gards to putting the park at Diana Princess of Wales Park, which already has a playground, skate NICKY AND NIKHIL TEAM UP FOR A CLEAN UP Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Sir John A.Macdonald Public School students Nicky Sabino, left, and Nikhil Venugopal work together to do a little cleaning up in Parkham Parkette as part of the school’s adopt-a-park program. They came in buses from cities and towns around Ontario to be part of the solidarity rally in reaction to the announcement made by GM last week that it would close the plant in 2009. Representatives from other provinces left a CAW conference in Toronto early to en- courage their “brothers and sisters.” Many wore the red Made in Canada Mat- ters T-shirts that have been popular at the blockade in front of GM headquarters. Others donned tops that read “United we stand, divided we fall,” “Union and Proud” and “Out of a job yet? Keep buying foreign.” They came to the march for many rea- sons. “We believe that when you sign a collec- tive agreement that agreement should mean something,” said Stewart Brennan from Oakville Local 707. “We’re here because a contract’s a con- tract,” said Mike Van Boekel of Local 88 in Ingersoll. And they came to show truck plant work- ers they thought what was happening to them was wrong. “We came to support the GM workers,” said Shawn Whalen, one of 20 steelworkers who came from Local 721 in Toronto. “This is kind of a rip-off.” “We need to support these guys,” said Ramon Daplas of Local 252 in Brampton. “This is hard to take, considering the gov- ernment is doing nothing about it and let- ting corporations get away with outsourcing jobs to Mexico.” They were worried about the wide-rang- ing effects of the layoffs. “This is a fight for jobs, a fight for jobs for our kids, a fight for this town,” said Marcella Fortino from Local 1459 in Etobicoke. Ms. Fortino is a Durham resident who used to work at Chrysler in Ajax. She moved to Eto- bicoke when the Ajax plant closed. Many came from other unions, includ- ing hotel workers from Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 4207 St. Catharines. “They have a different focus for their strug- gles than the hotel industry, but everybody’s under pressure,” CUPE member Ron Walker said. “We shouldn’t throw jobs away.” As the rally began to march up Park Road toward Cordova Road, workers on their lunch break at the truck plant stood against the fence watching the crowd go by. “Fantastic,” said Debbie Korson as she watched them. The crowd chanted “Save our jobs” as they returned to the march’s starting point. They rallied around a hill where they heard union leaders and members of the provincial and federal NDP speak. Ron Svajlenko, the skilled trades repre- sentative for Local 222, addressed the crowd and asked attendees to spread the message to their neighbours about how the job loss will affect everyone. “Canadians have to understand, we won’t live like Mexicans.” -- with files from Stefanie Swinson Save time, save money. Gun-toting bandits hit Ajax store newsdurhamregion.com PICKERING — A 17- year-old girl was arrested and a man is being sought after a pursuit Wednesday in which an OPP vehicle was twice rammed. The incident began around 3 p.m. in the west- bound collector lanes of Hwy. 401 at Salem Road in Ajax when an OPP of- ficer pulled over an older model grey minivan. After the officer got out of his marked black-and- white SUV to approach the van, the driver of the van pulled away. The officer followed in his vehicle and pulled up beside the van, directing the driver to pull over. The driver rammed the police vehicle and continued on. The officer continued to follow the van and was rammed a second time. The driver of the van got off the highway, turned onto Bayly Street in Pickering and into a town- house complex, where the van’s two occupants fled on foot. Durham Regional Po- lice, with two K9 units, as- sisted the OPP in search- ing for the two people. The 17-year-old was found a short time later hiding from police. A man in his mid-20s is being sought. He left behind his wallet in the van, including photo iden- tification. The van wasn’t registered to either party and police said it had been hot-wired. OPP report no weapons were seen and there were no injuries. Coun. O’Connell also fears the Valley Farm Road park’s location may get low numbers, indicating the desire for a leash-free dog park isn’t needed, “which is incorrect.” Mr. Buntsma said there are homes close by where people will walk to the park “because there’s an existing sidewalk.” Ward 3 Regional Council- lor Rick Johnson suggested charging users in order to recoup the costs and to make sure it’s clean. But the working group plans to do big clean-ups at least four times per year. “I personally think this is a good place to start and it will have my support this evening,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. Man sought after OPP vehicle rammed twice on Hwy. 401 Need for child-care program leads to demonstration Company seeks injunction to end protest By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com WHITBY — The ongoing union blockade that has paralyzed General Motors head- quarters in Oshawa is illegal and causing irreparable damage, the company has said in seeking a court injunction to end the protest. “The position of General Motors here is that without a doubt it is facing a real risk of harm because of the blockade,” lawyer John MacDonald argued in Whitby superior court Thursday. “This blockade is illegal,” he told Justice David Salmers. “It resulted in the obstruction of GM em- ployees accessing headquarters and as a re- sult the blockade cannot continue.” But Sean Dewart, the lawyer representing several Canadian Auto Workers Local 222 members named in a motion launched by GM, said the company surrendered its right to relief under the law when it announced the impending closing of Oshawa’s truck plant, a move the union says will affect 2,600 work- ers. He said the sudden announcement violates a clause in the union’s new collective agree- ment that states they would be consulted by the company prior to any major layoffs or shutdowns based on economic conditions. Mr. Dewart characterized GM’s move as a breach of the collective agreement that ne- gates the company’s right to appeal for relief from the subsequent protest. Members of CAW Local 222 set up a block- ade in front of the company’s Colonel Sam Drive headquarters shortly after the June 3 announcement and in the days since have allowed only a few staff members deemed essential by the company access to the site. The company has filed for an injunction and is seeking $1.5 million in damages from several union members. There is no indica- tion when Justice Salmers will make his deci- sion but it could be as early as today, Friday, June 13. During proceedings Thursday Mr. Dewart questioned a senior management member on the timing of the announcement, which came weeks after CAW members ratified a new collective agreement with the company. Cheryl Ollila, general director of labour re- lations at GM and a key company representa- tive during this spring’s contract talks, agreed the auto maker had committed to hold ad- vance discussions with the CAW prior to making decisions on plant closings or other measures dictated by market forces. But in the case of Oshawa’s truck plant, that didn’t occur, she said. “Is that what you agreed to?” Mr. Dewart asked of the pledge to hold advance talks. “Yes,” Ms. Ollila said. “Did you (hold advance talks)?” Mr. Dew- art asked. “No,” she replied. But Ms. Ollila said language in the collec- tive agreement repeatedly refers to market demand as the determining factor in deci- sions about product lines and assembly op- erations. Pressures on the truck market were a con- stant topic during talks with the union, she said. Local 222 president Chris Buckley testified that during talks workers had been assured production would continue in Oshawa, with GM shifting to new hybrid pickup lines. Some 200 prototype hybrid pickups have already been built in Oshawa, Mr. Buckley said. “It was our understanding . . . we would be the sole producers of the hybrid pickup truck,” the union boss said. P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 13, 2008 durhamregion.com Time to pay attention to 2006 meth fire victims T he life Ramona Williams once knew is over. The single mother, who’s owned a business in Pickering for 14 years, lost nearly everything after the com- plex in which Durham Plastics was located caught fire following a meth- amphetamine lab explosion in Novem- ber, 2006. They can no longer travel and she can’t afford to enrol her kids in sports programs, or even feed them healthy foods. Scott McGregor’s Highwood Manu- facturing was also there. He’s con- cerned about feeding his family. This is the same man who has been in the jewelry-making business since 1980 and brought his business to Pickering in 1994. He even made Wayne Gretzky’s first Stanley Cup ring. The two are asking the City for com- pensation. They claim they were origi- nally told their businesses would only be closed down for a couple of weeks. A month later, they were told it would be another few weeks, and so on, until they were finally allowed access to their units in late March of 2007 (but they weren’t ready for use until March of this year). Ms. Williams said, upon entry, she noticed the unit was filled with snow, and nearly all of her machinery was broken. She had to relocate and, in order to do so, she cashed in her RRSPs, her life savings and re-mort- gaged her home. Now she’s going to lose it. Mr. McGregor couldn’t afford to relo- cate and, in the meantime, lost his cus- tomers. He said this is because he lost their trust after also telling them he’d only be closed down for a short period of time. This is on top of the fact that when customers need service and their usual supply is closed, they’re forced to go elsewhere. Ms. Williams, who also lost all of her customers, says if she knew how long she’d be closed right off the bat, she would have immediately opened up shop at a different location. The meth fire was unique to Pickering, which is a good thing. But because it’s a new situation does not make it right that these business own- ers were the guinea pigs. Both owners have reports that stated it was safe to re-enter 15 days after the fire. Of course, there were a number of organizations involved, and it’s not for me to say who had the best opinion in the matter. But, it does seem there was miscommunication that severely changed the lives of people bringing in money for Pickering and their families. The City of Pickering’s legal depart- ment is looking at a letter Ms. Williams and Mr. McGregor sent to the City and will come back with suggestions on how to pursue the matter. There are a lot of angry business owners. Mr. McGregor said more than 60 businesses will get involved in a Class Action lawsuit if they continue to be ignored. These people are angry. They have some pretty good argu- ments and documents to back them up. The City should get back to them. Kristen Calis’ column appears every third Friday. E-mail kcalis@durhamregion.com. They didn’t start the fire Kristen Calis Europe last July, British Columbia in February and now a planned trip to Halifax later this month. Our regional councillors are certainly adding up the frequent flyer miles at tax- payers’ expense. The latest planned trip to visit a waste facility is to Halifax, at a cost of $21,000 to Durham taxpayers. Now how many regional councillors would you guess it would take to report on the trip? Four, five? Not in Durham, as 17 people, five staff members and 12 council- lors, are expected to make the trip. The 17 will visit a stabilized landfill as well as two composting facilities and a recycling facility. And, just to make sure everyone has a chance to head east, those who can’t free up June 20 on their schedule will be invited to make the trip at a later date. Regional chairman Roger Anderson justified the excursion by noting, “If this is the only one (stabilized landfill) in North America and they’re saying it works, we should look at it.” Why does it take 34 eyes to “look at it.” Can’t eight or 10 eyeballs do the same job? And, a stabilized landfill is vastly different from what the Region has been promoting in the area of waste. In Halifax, residents put their recyclables and garbage in the same bag. At the stabi- lized landfill, the bags are then broken up, inspected and sorted when they get to the facility. The problem with that method is the majority of recyclables are contami- nated and end up in a landfill site. Statistics supplied by Halifax show of the 155,000 tonnes of material that go through the facility each year, 135,000 tonnes end up in landfill. Maybe that’s why this is the only landfill of its type in North America. For years, Durham residents have been inundated with literature showing us how to separate our recyclables, fill our compost bins and set out as few black bags as pos- sible. If cardboard isn’t placed at the curb correctly, it won’t be picked up. To take a step backwards now would be wrong. Durham is poised to build an incinerator and it shouldn’t deviate from that path. In February, only a few councillors and staff went out west to visit an incinera- tor. Then staff prepared a report for those councillors who didn’t make the trip. That should be sufficient in this case as well. Better still, cancel the trip and save the $21,000. With skyrocketing gas prices , gar- bage trucks heading to Michigan will surely need a top-up. CATCH UP ONLINE AT newsdurhamregion.com By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Region finance staff are going to spend the summer assessing the eco- nomic impact of the GM truck plant closure and how it will affect its revenue. Finance commissioner Jim Clapp estimates the truck plant closing will mean a loss of nearly $1 million per year for the Region and about the same for Oshawa, in property taxes. Once the truck plant closes, the plant itself is assessed as having next to no value and the property tax take for the Region drops. “It’s probably more prob- lematic in terms of water and sewer rates,” said Mr. Clapp. That loss hovers around $1 million per year as well. “That could raise the water and sewer rate anywhere from one to two per cent.” The finance commissioner said his staff will consider the economic impact of the closure over the summer and points out it’s not just the rev- enue from GM that may drop, but from its feeder plants as well. “My understanding is there are suppliers that just deal with the truck plant as well, like Lear in Ajax comes to mind,” said Mr. Clapp. At Wednesday’s finance committee meeting, Regional chairman Roger Anderson ex- pressed concern about the cost to the Region in terms of social services as well. “The impact for us in ‘08 won’t be as hard as it will be in late ‘09 or ‘10 when the bene- fits run out for those that can’t find jobs,” he said. life • style • solutions OSHAWA www.sklargallery.com Exceptional Warranty Superior Construction Fast Delivery 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 905-723-4561 Hours: Mon.• Tues.• Wed. 10-6, Thurs.• Fri. 10-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun.11-5 Durham’s Newest & Largest Sklar Peppler Furnishings Store! floor MODEL clearance ONELOC A T I O N ONL YOSH A W A Sofas • Loveseats • Chairs • Recliners OSHAWA *Credit equal to the value of the GST and PST. Cheque for Canadian Hearing Society to be presented June 21 By Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The organizers behind last month’s controversial Red Fridays Rally say they want to set the record straight. The May 30 event was dogged by negative publicity, based large- ly on the fact that the Red Fridays Foundation is not a registered charity and had no way to guar- antee funds raised from the event would go to the intended chari- ties. Durham spokesman Brian Wilkins is hoping to alleviate con- cerns, saying the group plans to detail all money raised and costs associated with the event by re- leasing a public report later this month. The numbers aren’t finalized yet, but he said $10,000 of funds raised were used to cover costs for the rally -- like lighting, sound and a stage -- while the remaining $12,000 will be donated to the Ca- nadian Hearing Society (CHS). “We’re doing exactly what we said we would do,” Mr. Wilkins said. “We didn’t profit from this in any way.” Brad McCabe, director of cor- porate and foundation giving for CHS, confirmed a cheque presen- tation ceremony is slated for June 21 at the society’s annual general meeting in Toronto. The funds will be used to sup- port the Hearing Care Counselling Program, which sees counsellors go into people’s homes to asses hearing loss and make plans for independent living, and the Com- munications Device Program, which provides hearing impaired people with alerting devices for things like doorbells and smoke alarms, Mr. McCabe said. Mr. Wilkins expects another $2,000 or $3,000 in donations to trickle in over the coming weeks, which he said will be given to Friends of Veterans Canada and the Troop Morale Fund sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion. The Red Fridays Foundation staged a motorcade and rally May 30 to commemorate Canadian sol- diers killed in Afghanistan. Hundreds of vehicles traveled the Highway of Heroes from Tren- ton to Toronto, led by a car bearing the names of soldiers killed in ac- tion. In the weeks before the event, the original founders of the Red Fridays movement -- which en- courages Canadians to wear red on Fridays as a show of support for the troops -- raised concerns that rally organizers didn’t have permission to put the names of the soldiers on the lead car, and that the Red Fridays Foundation is not a registered charity. That criticism led to a firestorm of controversy, and questions about the rally made headlines. Mr. Wilkins maintains the names on the car were not intended to be an advertisement, partisan po- litical statement or anything other than a simple tribute done with the best of intentions. He has also confirmed the Red Fridays Foundation is not a reg- istered charity, saying it was set up that way intentionally because Canadian law precludes registered charities from donating to other registered charities. Mr. de Jong joined Dur- ham environmentalists for the local release of a report called Stop Trashing the Climate, which advocates a zero waste approach to garbage, rather than using landfills or incineration. The report was authored by an international group of non-governmental organi- zations. The idea is to stop the issues before they begin, starting with the companies that produce the packag- ing. “Everything has to be de- signed so it doesn’t end up in landfill,” Mr. de Jong said, adding there’s no reason to produce anything that can’t be reused, composted or recycled. Also present at the event, voicing their opposition to incineration, were CAW Durham Regional Environ- ment Council president and New Democrat Dave Renaud and Bryan Ran- som, the federal Liberal candidate for the Durham riding, currently held by Bev Oda. NDP MPP Peter Tabuns also sent a letter of support and his regrets for not attending. Mr. Tabuns wrote he encourages the efforts of those stopping incineration in Durham and also feels it is a fundamental error to waste resources by inciner- ating them when they could be recycled. Those attending the event all said incineration uses up valuable resourc- es and is more expensive than simply not producing waste. Among them was Markham Councillor Erin Shapero. She said the provincial and federal governments need to get on board with a zero waste plan. Ms. Shapero said Markham is leading the way with 70 per cent of its waste being directed away from landfills and being recycled or composted and greater diversion rates planned in the coming years. “In Markham we’ve de- cided going zero waste is the best way to a cleaner, greener future,” she said. Mr. de Jong said he didn’t care which political party stopped incineration. “We have a moral and ethical responsibility to leave a clean planet to fu- ture generations,” he said, adding the way to provide this change is through pro- ducing environmentally friendly products that don’t need to be incinerated. -- With files from Reka Szekely WebsiteDirectory Commercials Gold BookTalking Characters DO WE HAVE A BUNCH OF GREAT DEALS FOR YOU! the future at your fingertips today Gold Book is even better. Assessments made right on scene By Moya Dillon mdillon@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Durham Mental Health Services (DMHS) has launched a new crisis response team to help local police responding to mental health situations. In partnership with Dur- ham Regional Police and Whitby Mental Health Cen- tre (WMHC), the Mental Health Support Unit con- sists of a police officer and a mental health nurse who can be called in if mental health intervention is need- ed. “Now we can provide an assessment right on the scene,” said Ruth Lawrence, the support unit’s mental health nurse. “That way we can gather information from the first officers and the fam- ily in order to connect the person with services imme- diately.” Under the old system, po- lice officers would take the person to the emergency room, where they were re- quired to wait with them until a mental health assess- ment was completed, which could take hours. If the as- sessment determined inter- vention was needed, DMHS was called. “It really brings the ser- vices to their doorstep,” said Const. Corey Walsh, police officer for the support unit. “Historically, police would have to pull individuals out of the situation and bring them to the services. This allows us to help both the individual and their families on site, if needed.” Mrs. Lawrence says her knowledge as a mental health nurse is a nice com- plement to Const. Walsh’s policing background when they’re in the field. “Sometimes we speak a different language,” she said of working with Const. Walsh. “But we’ve learned to interpret each other and it comes in handy. When we’re at the hospital I can explain to him the different processes and terminology, and if a criminal situation is involved, he can help me understand that aspect.” The Support Unit is part of DMHS’ Crisis Services, which include 24-hour phone support, a mobile response team and housing for people that need a safe place to stay. “We don’t decide what a crisis is,” DMHS housing co-ordinator Mark Bouw- meester said. “If you decide you’re in crisis, then you’re in crisis. You get to define that.” From there DMHS co- ordinates with other facili- ties, such as WMHC, to de- termine the patients’ needs. From homes to hospitals to public buildings, the re- sults yield higher quality, the building has more value, and the cost to the environment is substantially reduced. “Don’t hesitate as a homeowner to ask for building methods and materials that cause minimal impact and provide the highest energy efficiency,” says Todd Blyth at Nudura Corporation, a leading name in building system tech- nology. “It will be your contribution to the planet for as long as you live there- and builders today expect to hear responsible requests. In fact, to meet, and even surpass those expectations, more and more builders are discard- ing the wasteful wood-framing method in favour of concrete.” Take a look at the answers to the most frequently asked questions on this subject, courtesy of Nudura: Q: Why concrete? A: The latest advancement for walls is Canadian technology and it con- sists of stay-in-place concrete forms, which are vastly superior to construc- tion with wood. For example, the Lego-like, pre-assembled units allow for more freedom in design. Also, the system cuts construction time in half and it produces far less waste than the traditional wood-framing method. Builders are now opting for these in- terlocking units (of reinforced concrete sandwiched between two layers of expanded polystyrene foam insulation) to construct better homes, schools, hos- pitals, condominiums, hotels, offices and other public buildings. Q: What are the benefits? A: Your energy bills will be reduced up to 70 percent-and with this con- crete system, you’ll also get a home that stands to be: • Twice as energy efficient (no air spaces or studs) and the technology evens out the effect of external tem- perature swings. • Up to three times more sound resis- tant due to the double-foam, insulated concrete core. • Up to four times more fire resistant, since the walls are built with steel rein- forced concrete. • Up to nine times stronger, a superior feature in high-wind or tornado. Far more resistance to thermal bridg- ing, where outside cold travels easily through walls to create uncomfortable cold spots, drafts, and mustiness. 637 Kingston Rd. And keep in mind - adult supervision is essential at all times when children are using a pool. Keep a cordless phone or cell phone nearby while the pool is in use for emergencies. If you need to leave the pool area, make sure another adult is present to supervise young bathers. When the pool is not being used, make sure it is covered by a safety cover. When the pool is uncovered, it can be a tempting playground for children. For added safety, keep pool toys out of the water when not being used and store them out of sight. Never leave toys on the deck or leave a table or chairs near a pool fence that could allow a child to climb over into the pool area. Make sure you have a clear, unobstructed view of the pool from inside the house and never allow horse- play or roughhousing (dunking, pushing or throwing someone into the pool) or playful screaming for help that could mask a real emergency. Enclose your yard with a permanent fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate and install a portable mesh fence around the immediate pool perimeter to keep children out of the pool once they are in the backyard. All doors leading from the house to the pool should also have a self-latching, self-closing mechanism and all windows should have window locks installed to prevent a child from climbing through. More pool and hot tub safety information can be found online at www.poolcouncil.ca or toll-free at 1- 800-879-7066. Waste was an issue. There, landfill and open burning were both being used as a means of getting rid of garbage. An incinerator was proposed and went through the environmental assessment pro- cess. Durham too is in the midst of an EA aimed at building an incinerator. But down east, in the 1990s, the provincial government turned down the incinerator, said Bob Kenney, a solid waste resource analyst from Nova Scotia. There was no choice but to try something else. Now, after taking advice through an array of forms of community input and implementing legislative and educational tools aimed at di- verting waste, Nova Scotia is seen as a leader in waste diversion, Mr. Kenney said in a presenta- tion to Clarington council. “We branded ourselves as world leaders in recycling,” he said. “We told people that, and people became proud of it.” An array of products is banned from regular waste. For example, drink containers except those containing milk require payment of a 10-cent deposit, which is 50 per cent refunded on return. Computer equipment has been re- moved from the regular waste stream. Like here, food waste is taken out to provide com- post. It was partially a matter of enforcement, Mr. Kenney said. “We went to the public and said ‘You pretty much have to do this, because it’s banned,’” he said. The message was, “We’re required to have the programs and you’re required to recycle.” Many programs were introduced, including one that deals with construction and demoli- tion waste in an array of different ways. With the “environmental capital” available as a result of a new consciousness surrounding the issue, it’s been a relatively easy sell, even with the recent implementation of clear gar- bage bags, Mr. Kenney said. “If someone says ‘I don’t want to do this,’ someone will turn around and say, ‘You don’t want to recycle?’ ” Mr. Kenney said. “Then there’s silence.” Mr. Kenney was one of several presenters who has been invited to Clarington council over the last several months to provide insight into waste issues. Maureen Carter-Whitney of the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy was also on hand Monday. She delivered a message about the need for an un- biased study on incineration, which she argued should be done at the Provincial level. Recent streamlining of the EA process for some types of waste management sites, includ- ing incinerators, makes it appear “the Ontario government is quickly trying to find solutions to emerging problems” without appropriate study, she said. She wrote a paper that has several recom- mendations for the Province, including a need to evaluate whether incineration is an appro- priate method of waste management, and de- velop a “strong, effective and comprehensive waste management policy,” Ms. Carter-Whit- ney said. As well, current emissions guidelines should be reconsidered and strict packaging regulations should be put in place, her recom- mendations said. Further consideration should be given be- fore using incineration as the go-to for waste management, Ms. Carter-Whitney said. “I hope that before leaping into that, we take an opportunity to look at how much waste we are producing, and look at ways to reduce that,” she said. Cast vote for her starting June 22 By Christy Chase cchase@durhamaregion.com DURHAM — Donna LaJeunesse will be nervously awaiting the debut of CBC’s new reality series, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria, on June 15. The Oshawa resident is anxious to find out if she’s made it into the next level of competition to find a woman to play Maria in ‘The Sound of Music’ for the Mirvish production in Toronto. LaJeunesse, born in Bowman- ville but living now in Oshawa, was one of hundreds of Canadians who auditioned for the role this spring. She’s made it into the top 50. “I’ve been doing a lot of audi- tioning for the Mirvish produc- tions for two years now,” she said. “When I saw they were doing this and it’s a reality show, I was kind of worried but if you won’t get it if you don’t try.” After her audition, she got called back for the top 200, then made it to the “maybe” list with other women for the top 50. “I was one of 24 girls in the ‘maybe’ list who made it into the top 50,” she said. “It’s super excit- ing.” The show has been taped until now but will go live starting June 22, when viewers will be able to vote for their favourite Maria. “I’ll find out when you find out,” she said. “We’re in limbo.” LaJeunesse is well known in the musical theatre world in Durham. As a child, she loved singing and dancing and her parents got her involved with Oshawa Little The- atre youth group. She started her career in theatre with the group when she was 11. “That’s when I was bitten by the theatre bug and I’ve never been able to shake it,” she said. She was involved with the group for six years before moving on to adult productions, includ- ing ‘Hello Dolly’, ‘Oliver’ and the superb ‘Jekyll and Hyde The Musi- cal’, this spring. She played Emma, the fiance of Dr. Jekyll in the musical. And she just wrapped up her role as chore- ographer for the OLT youth group production, ‘Just So’. She took vocal lessons from Ross Cotton and later from Elaine Over- holt, a top-ranked vocal coach in North America and serving as instructor panel member on the show. LaJeunesse said she was pleased to see Overholt, adding her pres- ence offered a bit of comfort. The Maria hopeful said she’s enjoying the show. She added all the women get along well and are extremely tal- ented. When she’s not involved in the theatre, LaJeunesse is a dog groomer. No doubt, she sings to the pooches. With less than two minutes re- maining in the second of two 10- minute overtime halves in the gold- medal final against the A.B. Lucas Vikings of London, disaster struck. A long cross by a Lucas player from the left side of the field bounced off the post and past the Monarchs’ de- fenders to another Lucas player, who tapped it into the open side of the net for a 1-0 double-overtime win. The Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) champion Monarchs would settle for silver after a valiant battle against the defending OFSAA champions from London, which earned the repeat title. “Yeah, it was a tough bounce at the end,” said an emotionally drained Scott McDavid, the Mon- archs’ coach, reached on his cell phone after the contest. “The girls are crying and very sad right now. In a half-hour or so they’re going to realize what a great accomplishment this is.” McDavid noted the Monarchs weren’t without their chances, not only in regulation time, but also in the two overtime frames, but weren’t able to convert. Overall, he said it was a great game played by two deserving teams in the final. “It was back and forth with the two best teams going head to head,” said McDavid. “They got the break they needed at the end and ended up winning.” McDavid praised the work of his defenders in the gold-medal final, especially the work of goalkeeper Jessica Vella. “Our goalkeeper was amazing in overtime; she saved us a couple of times.” The Monarchs earned a shot at gold after blanking Kitchener’s Cam- eron Heights 2-0 in the semifinal game played Wedneday morning. McDavid said the Monarchs had numerous scoring chances through- out the game, hitting the crossbar twice. As it was, they were able to convert for a goal in each of the halves. For McDavid, the Monarchs’ re- lentless ball pressure put Cameron Heights on its heels from start to fin- ish. “It was just absolute pressure right from the start, which kind of made them nervous,” he said. “It could have been 4-0 or 5-0 to be honest. We were all over them.” Kayla Schroeder and Shelby Forza scored for the Monarchs; Jessica Vella recorded the shutout. Ajax-Pickering senior B’s beat Merchants a second consecutive time By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Mark Craig has borne the mantle of leadership well so far for the Ajax-Pickering Rock. In his first year as the captain of the OLA senior ‘B’ lacrosse team, taking over from the iconic Jim Veltman, who retired this year, Craig hasn’t shied away from his responsibilities and is, in fact, relishing them. “I guess it’s experience,” said Craig, a four-year Rock player, in answering why he’s enjoyed an easy transition to the cap- taincy this season. “A lot of the time, when you’re in the role of captain, you have to captain the ship in the right direction. You have to grab the reins a little bit harder and want to help out.” A case in point was a solid four- point effort (three goals, one as- sist) in lifting the Rock past one of their biggest adversaries -- the Brooklin Merchants -- by an 11-6 score at the Pickering Recreation Complex last Saturday night. The Rock led 6-4 after two pe- riods, and then broke it wide open in the third period with a five-goal onslaught to bury the Brookliners. Saturday’s victory was the Rock’s second consecutive win over their Durham Region ri- vals, after Brooklin (6-3) won the opener between the two squads. Beating Brooklin, Craig said, never goes out of style. “It puts a smile on everyone’s face in the locker room. Every- one knows everyone else on the floor and contrary to what you believe, if you have a friend on the floor, you have to play that much harder,” he said.
