The president of Local 222 of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union said he is giving General Motors a chance to reverse its deci- sion to close Oshawa’s truck plant in 2009 be- fore the union turns up the heat with its protest efforts. “It’s up to GM how long this protest contin- ues and how much we escalate this protest,” he said, to cheers from hundreds of union members assembled outside GM headquar- ters Thursday afternoon. “This fight has just begun.” Union officials were heading to Detroit Thursday night in advance of a Friday morn- ing meeting with General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner. Mr. Buckley said they will be demanding that GM reverse its decision to close the truck plant and lay off 2,600 workers. He wouldn’t specify what action the union would take if its demands were not met, say- ing anything was possible and that he couldn’t guarantee how much longer the union’s re- spectful and responsible protest would stay that way. Truck plant chairman Keith Osborne said the union has already filed a policy griev- ance and sent a representative to the Ontario Labour Relations Board to complain that the company had bargained in bad faith. “Those sons of bitches lied to us and they’re going to pay,” he said. “Rick Wagoner is the only person who should lose his job.” Hundreds of union members gathered out- side GM headquarters to hear Mr. Buckley speak. Normally, the union holds its general membership meeting on the first Thursday of the month and simply moved it to the protest site, throwing out the planned agenda in fa- vour of flag-waving and protest songs. CAW members travelled from as far away as Windsor, St. Catharines, Brampton and Kitch- ener to show support for their union brothers and sisters in Oshawa. Local 222 members started gathering near GM headquarters at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, creating a barricade across the street to pre- vent GM workers from reaching their office. Only employees of the nearby Minacs office were allowed through. The protest was peaceful with union mem- bers in red “Made in Canada Matters” T-shirts standing in quiet solidarity. In a painful twist, protesting workers learned Wednesday afternoon the truck plant had just been awarded one of J.D. Power and Associ- ates’ top awards. And that would be on two shifts - about 300 people. Hav- ing said that, we’ve already had the loss of one shift scheduled for September ‘08. Essentially that would end employment for the re- maining 150 people at that location.” A spokesman for the com- pany did not return calls to Durham Region Metroland Media Group. GM Chief Executive Of- ficer Rick Wagoner an- nounced Tuesday GM plans to close its truck plant in Oshawa in 2009. The closing will eliminate up to 2,600 jobs at the Oshawa facility, but Mr. Batchelor said more local workers will lose their jobs. “It does certainly have a ripple effect,” he said. “A number of people (are) out of work as a result of the an- nouncement.” Paul Gormley, CAW Local 1090 Lear Ajax chairman, said the announcement is “absolutely devastating,” especially since the plant’s employees have been work- ing there for 17-to-37 years. “It’s like what you’ve known for most of your adult life is now finished,” he said, adding most got their jobs at Lear immedi- ately or shortly after finish- ing high school. The average wage at Lear is $28 per hour and the aver- age starting wage is between $12-and-$15 per hour, Mr. Gormley said. He said a lot of companies don’t even offer benefits anymore, which can really hurt the large amount of Lear’s employees with young families. Mr. Gormley, a Lear employee of 17 years, counts himself lucky since his children have already graduated high school, but said he and his wife are weighing their options and is considering going back to school to complete his degree. Some employees, he said, are fearful for their long-time plans to send their children to university. Others are considering leav- ing their families in order to pick up work in Alberta. “It’s going to be a real ad- justment and I don’t know what the future’s going to bring,” he said. Mr. Gormley said Lear Ajax employees completely support GM auto workers. “I am extremely con- cerned for the future of Canada if the government continues to allow the man- ufacturing and auto sector as a whole to be devastated and transferred overseas,” he said. The announcement also effects Ryder Integrat- ed Logistics in Pickering, re- sponsible for delivery of the parts in and out of the plant, he said. Fifty workers will lose their jobs, he said. A spokeswoman for Ryder of- fered a “no comment” when contacted. “(They’re) all out of em- ployment as a result of this announcement,” he said. “Absolutely incredible. We had a little bit of hope in the agreement that was reached with the CAW and GM...and obviously that commitment was short-lived.” The closure also effects BBI Enterprises in Ajax, which does some instal- lation parts for the truck plant, Mr. Batchelor said. The Chevrolet Silverado LD was named in the J.D. Power 2008 Initial Quality Study. That announcement was followed by one Thursday, revealing the truck plant had won a Harbour and Associates award for efficiency. The protest has sparked a political fire storm as union leaders blame the Harper govern- ment for allowing soaring gas prices, a high dollar and unfair trade to weaken the manu- facturing industry. Politicians of all stripes are rushing to weigh in. On Wednesday morning, provincial NDP leader Howard Hampton arrived to show his support and condemn GM for signing a con- tract with the union two weeks ago, then an- nouncing it would close the plant. “GM went to the bargaining table and made a commitment. We can’t allow them to just walk away from that two weeks later,” he said. “We need to hold corporations accountable and make them respect the workers.” He was followed by Liberal finance critic John McCallum who spoke to workers Thurs- day morning. He took aim at finance minister and Whitby- Oshawa MP Jim Flaherty, saying he agreed with a call from Liberal leader Stephane Dion, that he be fired. “Jim Flaherty tells the world Ontario is the worst place to invest and General Motors lis- tened,” he said, referring to controversial re- marks made by the finance minister in Febru- ary. Mr. Flaherty’s press secretary said the quote has been misinterpreted, stressing the minis- ter was criticizing the province’s high business taxes, saying they are a deterrent to business investment. As he wrapped up his speech Thursday, Mr. Buckley told his members to have faith in the union but many are having trouble staying optimistic. Bev McCloskey, 79, and a General Motors retiree, walked her first picket line with GM workers in 1949 and said in all her years with the union she has never seen General Motors go back on an agreement in this way. “I don’t even feel like our pensions are safe,” she said. “If they can change one thing, they can change anything on us.” GM spokesman Stew Low said the decision wasn’t an easy one for the company to make. “Nobody likes to have to make decisions to stop production at any of our plants,” he said, stressing the decision was made because the shift in demand for trucks seems to be a per- manent one. “We have to react, we can’t build vehicles people aren’t purchasing.” Truck sales for May 2008 were down 32.9 per cent compared with the same time last year. CAW officials will be meeting with Mr. Wagoner at 8 a.m. Friday, and expect to make an announcement to the union membership early in the afternoon. Stay with www.newsdurhamregion.com for updates. Artists in Ajax are constantly looking for opportunities to promote their art. Ajax is supplying that need with this festival, which I anticipate will grow larger year after year. Ajax possesses a high degree of tal- ented performers and visual artists. Having an event like this highlights the diversity, quality and depth of the tal- ent that resides in our community. The arts are a core value of every communi- ty and Ajax is beginning to realize that the economic and non-economic ben- efits of the arts are valuable in building a community that appeals to residents and businesses. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 6, 2008 durhamregion.com Trojans coach Sahadath says new track unusable for school’s elite sprinters I t’s ironic that one of the top high school track and field teams in the province has accomplished so much without the benefit of a track to train on. But, that’s the way it’s been for the Pickering High School Trojans, whose own training facilities have been in a construc- tion-induced limbo for more than a year, as the Church Street school is being almost completely revamped, including the play- ing fields, now beginning to take shape. That irony isn’t lost on Pickering High School track coach Cyril Sahadath. “For a school without any facilities, we’ve done OK,” he said. “We have nowhere to train here.” The longtime coach, who’s sent countless PHS athletes on to the OFSAA champion- ships over the years, including another crop of 30 who’ll represent the school this weekend in Hamilton, has relied upon the goodwill of a rival school, St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering, in order to train his elite athletes this season. So, every weeknight this season, Saha- dath and his talented athletes have made the trek to Pickering for 6:30 p.m. training that would finish up about 9 p.m. He notes training in Pickering is not ideal. Far from it. It’s left many students who would otherwise have gone out for the track team on the sidelines. Moreover, the athletes couldn’t even partake in any indoor training prior to the track season, as construction meant no gymnasium was available. Instead, PHS athletes and coaches had to make do with completing their training in the school’s hallways. As a man of good humour, Sahadath takes these trials and tribulations in stride, using the equivalent of duct tape to keep his successful track and field program on the right track. But, even his gentle demeanour is stretched to the limit by what he views as a huge mistake being made in the construction of the track and field facilities at Pickering High. “It’s like building a pool and not putting water in it,” he said, referring to the track surface. Currently, the PHS track athletes train on the all-weather track surface at St. Mary, which allows the athletes to wear their spikes, a necessity for elite sprinters. But, the track at PHS won’t come com- plete with that surface, making it almost unusable for his stable of sprinters -- the staple of the highly successful track pro- gram. “Part of the deal was to put down an all-weather surface, but they (the school board) just ran out of money. So, they’ve said what you see is what you get, which is unfortunate because Ajax is the only municipality in Durham without an all- weather surface.” He’s hoping PHS parents and students will lobby the Town of Ajax to take up the cause and upgrade the track into some- thing more than one for casual runners or phys-ed classes at the school. “The parents and local politicians have to get involved. Me, as a coach, it’s not my fight. For 20 years, I’ve done without. I think the local politicians have an opportu- nity (to build a better facility) and it’s time for them to get on board.” Al Rivett’s column appears every third Fri- day. E-mail arivett@durhamregion.com. Pickering High School not on track with new facilities Al Rivett The latest attempt in a long-standing effort to prevent or at least cut back on youth smoking was launched on the weekend. If you’ve stopped in at a convenience store in the last few days, you’ll notice a very different look behind the cash register. Where once there was row after row of countless varieties of cigarette packages, there is now nothing. The cigarettes are still there of course, but now they’re hidden behind what were once power walls. The purpose of the provincial legislation banning cigarette displays is simple: Out of sight, out of mind. The hope is that young people, who are the prime targets for the tobacco industry if it wants to stay viable, will not take up the habit if they don’t easily see what’s avail- able. As time marches on and children grow into their prime smoking years, it’s pos- sible that without visible triggers to pull them in, fewer will take up a habit that could cost them their lives. The government has been down this road many times before: cigarette adver- tising has been banned from television, magazines and newspapers, at sporting events -- nearly everywhere in fact. And a raft of bylaws have been enacted that have successively prevented cigarette smoking in workplaces, public buildings and bars and restaurants. There is even a move afoot to ban smoking in automobiles which include children. So this is just another piece of the puzzle in dealing with a long-term health prob- lem. Governments always face the push- pull between collecting tobacco tax rev- enue and paying for the increased health bills wracked up by those who contract smoking-related diseases. While tobacco is a legal product in Ontario for those 19 and older, the real problem is in keeping the addiction away from those 18 and under. And if keeping cigarette packages behind blank walls helps in any way to cut back on youth tak- ing up the habit, it’s a positive step on the road to better health for all. School president says GM plant closure shouldn’t have impact DURHAM — Now more than ever, partnerships such as The Beacon Project are im- portant in ensuring General Motors stays competitive, Ronald Bordessa said. While the Oshawa truck plant is closing, plans for the University of Ontario Insti- tute of Technology’s automo- tive research facility are going ahead as scheduled, said the university’s president. The centre will be used as part of GM’s Beacon Project. “There’s no reason for them to change anything,” said Mr. Bordessa. If anything, GM should be more concerned about hav- ing the facility available for research so it can continue to compete by changing prod- ucts as quickly as possible, he said. The truck plant closed due to GM’s inability to sell its trucks, he said. The auto- maker recognizes the need to modify its product line and bring it into conformity with what the market place is look- ing for, Mr. Bordessa said. “GM has done many of the hard things. They’re position- ing themselves to be compet- itive in the future,” Mr. Bord- essa said. “I have no doubt they will in fact do well in the future.” The Beacon Project is intended to support new vehicle and engine programs, employment and skills train- ing and automotive engi- neering, research and devel- opment and manufacturing in Canada. The joint project involved GM and the federal and provincial governments. The Automobile Centre of Excellence (ACE) at UOIT will include research and devel- opment tools to test vehicle dynamics and durability, including a wind tunnel to simulate -40C conditions. The project is important to help Oshawa be seen as not only a manufacturing city, but also one that does research, Mr. Bordessa said. “I would say this news this week is very difficult for GM and the workers and the city to absorb,” he said. “We all have to work together to ensure Oshawa and GM are competitive players in the au- tomotive sector.” GM is providing $60 million to the ACE, while the provin- cial government is providing $58 million. The federal gov- ernment is also contributing. For closing its Oshawa plant, GM could face up to $35 million in penalties from the Ontario government. The impending closure of the 2,600-employee truck plant sparked a political fire- storm at Queen’s Park recent- ly over the $175 million, 50- year loan GM received from Premier Dalton McGuinty’s $500 million auto invest- ment fund three years ago, GM vice-president David Pa- terson confirmed. Under the deal, GM was to maintain an average of 16,000 jobs in On- tario over a 10-year period ending in 2013. Similar penalty provisions are in effect from a $200 mil- lion federal government loan, Mr. Paterson said. 20 % OFF Vertical GardeningVertical Gardening 20% OFF20% OFF Trellis too! Trellis too! A concerned father, he hasn’t started think- ing the worst just yet, despite the fact his son hasn’t been seen since Saturday night (May 30). Ryan Hawkins, 15, who attended Clarkson Secondary School in Mississauga, until about a month ago, disappeared with his 14-year- old girlfriend from his grandparents’ home in Pickering. Craig, 42, and his wife, Michelle, decided to move the teen here to live with his grandparents because he was facing bullying and other issues at Clarkson. Craig Hawkins said his son had been told by his grandparents that he couldn’t attend a house party that Saturday night. The dis- traught father believes his son became angry and then snuck out to attend the party. “I don’t know why he hasn’t turned up yet,” Craig Hawkins, a computer consultant, said Tuesday. “Right now I’m guessing he is upset and just needs some time.” Ryan Hawkins has never run away before and his father said this behaviour is “out of character.” A cellphone records search by Dur- ham Regional Police showed Hawkins last used his cell phone Sunday night in the area of Lakeshore and Southdown roads in Mis- sissauga, Craig Hawkins said. With pictures of women, hair bloodied by domestic violence, skits of controlling partners, and poetry read- ings, three Ajax High School students won $5,000 for their local charity, Herizon House, located in Ajax. The Grade 10 civics compe- tition was part of a Youth and Philanthropy Initiative pre- sented by the Toskan Casale Foundation. “One thing we learned in doing this is abuse is closer than you think,” said Sarah Mills, during the presentation. Herizon House was born after the domestic murders of four women and a child in 2000, the group said. It opened in 2004 and provides shelter for abused women and their children in Durham as well as other sup- port services. The group discussed differ- ent forms of domestic abuse. “The abuse of women is a huge problem in our society,” said Kevin McGarth. “Every 10 seconds an in- nocent child is beaten,” said Sarah. They showed a picture of a six-year-old who was starved and another who was beaten to death. The youth initiative is part of the independent study unit which makes up 30 per cent of a student’s mark in Ajax High School’s Grade 10 Civics class. Each class held its own presentations and the winners competed against each other for the $5,000 prize for their local charity. The donation for Herizon House will support emergency services, taxis to pick people up, groceries, general upkeep, clothing, and expansion, the Herizon group said during its presentation. Tania’s Place and Durham Region’s Domestic Violence/ Sexual Assault Care Centre were some other organizations featured in the competition. “I think it’s really empower- ing and inspiring to see young people trying to make a differ- ence in their community,” said Amanda Baine, an Ontario public school representative with the Youth and Philan- thropy Initiative. There are 200 schools in Canada involved in the project. The program is intended to spark student interest in chari- ties and allow them to dis- cover the social issues in their community. After participat- ing, students come back with an obvious passion for their charity, she said. Tanya Swanson, a Grade 10 Civics teacher, said they tried to get the students to pick a charity they had a direct inter- est in, either through volun- teer involvement or by know- ing someone it impacted. “Any they did a fantastic job,” Ms. Swanson said. “I was totally blown away by the cali- bre of the projects.” Some of the presentations included videos, pictures, and slide shows. Salvatore Ruscica died after a bag of drugs con- cealed inside his body burst, SIU Director James Cornish said in clearing Durham po- lice of any criminal respon- sibility for the man’s Nov. 10, 2007, death. “I can see nothing that would have put the officers on notice they should watch this man more carefully than they did,” Mr. Cornish said in a written decision released Thursday. “Although Mr. Ruscica did advise officers that he used drugs, he denied any recent use of narcotics.” Mr. Cornish concluded Durham officers commit- ted no breach of their du- ties when they left the man unattended in an interview room for more than two hours following his arrest on drug charges last No- vember. Mr. Ruscica, 47, was ar- rested after a traffic acci- dent in Ajax. Witnesses told cops they’d seen him discarding items and officers found syringes discarded in a woodlot near the accident scene, accord- ing to a synopsis of events released by the SIU. The man was arrested on drug charges and taken to a police station. He was searched twice before being placed in a room near mid- night to await transfer to a central holding facility pending a bail hearing the next day. Shortly after 2 a.m. of- ficers heard noise coming from the room and found Mr. Ruscica wracked by sei- zures, the SIU said. He was taken to hospital, where he died. An autopsy concluded a bag of drugs the man had concealed in his body had burst, allowing the dope to escape into his blood sys- tem. Mr. Ruscica showed no signs of impairment as he was being processed by po- lice, Mr. Cornish said. The SIU is a civilian body that investigates death or serious injury suffered by people during interactions with police. In fact, the energy industry is responsible for upwards of 15,000 jobs in the region, Doug Lindeb- lom said Tuesday. “Days like today, it’s important for everybody to know that we have a very broadly based econo- my and a lot of opportunity,” Mr. Lindeblom said. “That’s not to say GM’s announcement isn’t signifi- cant, but we do have a broad- based economy here in Durham Region.” Over the past 40 years, since Pickering Nuclear Generating Sta- tion first located here, the energy industry has quietly become one of the major employers locally, said a 2006 study on Durham’ Energy Cluster. The study used informa- tion from an array of groups, in- cluding the Region, Ontario Power Generation and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. “Over the past 40 years, a vibrant energy cluster formed organically in Durham,” said the report. “From the establishment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station in 1965, community and industry participation in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Re- actor (ITER) initiative, through to the 2003 launch of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and the 2005 formation of the Dur- ham Strategic Energy Alliance, en- ergy-related industrial activity has grown steadily in Durham, making it Ontario’s premiere energy in- dustry cluster.” At the time of the study, be- tween 11,000 and 12,000 jobs, not including spin-off positions in the retail sector, were directly related to the energy industry. “Since that time, other compa- nies have located in Durham Re- gion,” some in anticipation of refur- bishment of reactors at Pickering and potential new nuclear reactors at Darlington, Mr. Lindeblom said. That’s increased the number of energy-related jobs to somewhere between 12,000 and 15,000, he es- timated. New nuclear reactors at Darlington, should the Province decide to build them here, could further drive that growth. As part of its ongoing environ- mental assessment into building new nukes at Darlington, Ontario Power Generation is completing an economic assessment of the potential benefit to the commu- nity. Exact numbers aren’t known, but Atomic Energy of Canada Lim- ited estimates that, if the Province went with its reactors about 2,500 construction workers would be needed. On June 6, more than 800 graduates of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) will receive their bach- elor and master’s degrees during convocation at the General Mo- tors Centre in Oshawa. The Class of 2008 will be joined by Bill Lishman and Avis Glaze, who will receive honorary Doctor of Law degrees for their professional and community contributions. Their accomplishments are intended to inspire UOIT gradu- ates. Mr. Lishman was the first per- son to foot-launch and land a powered rigid-wing aircraft in the 1970s. He then developed a technique to lead Canada geese in the air. After several years of research and experimentation, he suc- cessfully led a flock of 16 geese on a 400-mile migratory journey. It inspired the Oscar-nominat- ed film Fly Away Home and has earned him numerous awards. Ms. Glaze has had a lengthy career in education. As associate director of education for the York Region District School Board and director of education for the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, Ms. Glaze imple- mented character education programs. The time guidelines included in the board’s homework procedures are not in step with what Oshawa Trustee Michael Barrett has wit- nessed as a parent of six. General timelines for homework suggest up to 10 minutes for kindergarten, all the way up to an hour or two for high school students. “My children have never gotten that little amount of homework in their whole (school) careers,” Trustee Barrett said. The guidelines were included in an administrative report to the Durham District School Board’s standing committee on its home- work procedure on June 2. Trustee Barrett has three kids in the system and his wife helps them with homework into the night’s early hours. He doesn’t want students who often don’t have a parent at home to get lost in the system. The board’s homework proce- dure is based on the belief chil- dren are more likely to succeed when their parents are involved in their education, stated the report presented by Luigia Ayotte, super- intendent of program services. The guidelines are intended to provide parents with a clear understand- ing of the purpose of homework and emphasize the requirement to address needs of individual stu- dents when homework programs are developed. “This is what should happen, but it’s not happening all the time,” said Oshawa Trustee Kathleen Hopper, referencing her own expe- rience and comments by parents. Homework can include lots of repetition and is not always help- ful, just frustrating, she said. Quite often, kids who have help from their parents are rewarded a lot with marks, Trustee Hopper said. Homework is just one more stress- or when you have some disadvan- tages, she said. Ajax Trustee Marilyn Crawford requested the report following re- cent media attention on home- work. “If I was a single parent, I would be hard pressed to get my child through math,” Trustee Crawford said. “I’m not a single parent by the way. “I’m very grateful to have my husband at home or else my chil- dren would have never gotten through math.” She asked if there are homework clubs for kids, particularly those who don’t have a parent at home much. It’s a question of need and what teachers are willing to do and give up, Ms. Ayotte said. “I do know that our staff are profes- sional and they offer as much sup- port as possible,” she said. She’s not sure it’s something they’d be able to require contractually. Some teachers keep kids in at recess or lunch for homework, Ms. Ayotte said. “That sounds more like punish- ment than help,” Trustee Crawford said. Regarding French Immersion, some parents found the amount of homework was unbelievable and have pulled kids out of the pro- gram as a result, Trustee Crawford said. Parents were also unable to help kids with homework because they can’t understand it themselves. The board has actually found its French Immersion program is growing and its education stan- dard is the same, Ms. Ayotte said. “Guidelines are there; they’re fairly flexible,” she said, and added some parents want less, others want more. www.sklargallery.com Exceptional Warranty Superior Construction Fast Delivery Durham’s Newest & Largest Sklar Peppler Furnishings Store!ONELOCATI O N ONLY OSHA W A life • style • solutions OSHAWA 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 905-723-4561 Hours: Mon.• Tues.• Wed. 10-6, Thurs.• Fri. 10-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun.11-5 Hundreds of Styles and Colours... And now, with patented CONSERVAGLASS PLUS™ with Stay-Clean Technology, the view from those glass additions just got better. Described as windows that virtually clean themselves, CONSERVAGLASS PLUS’ ‘magic’ is a super-thin invisible, durable and permanent coating of silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide applied to the outside of the glass. This coating harnesses the power of the sun’s UV rays to loosen dirt so water can rinse it away, creating glass that almost cleans itself. Essentially, with a little sunshine and a little rainfall, windows and doors stay cleaner longer. They can also be cleaned easier than ever before. More specifically, the silicon dioxide makes CONSERVAGLASS PLUS exceptionally smooth so water disperses evenly, ‘sheets off’ and evaporates quickly, greatly reducing water spotting. At the same time, the titanium dioxide reacts chemically with the sun’s UV rays causing any organic materials on the glass to decompose – even on those cloudy days. Then when it rains, the decomposed dirt rinses away, leaving the glass almost spotless. Two additional CONSERVAGLASS PLUS advantages – both of which provide a clearer view both inside and out – include more visible light transmittance than any other comparable, competitive product and less exterior reflection than typical low-e glass. CONSERVAGLASS PLUS also keeps rooms warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, encouraging year-round conservation and helping home owners save money on heating and cooling bills. It also minimizes condensation and reduces UV damage to carpet and upholstery. In fact, Four Seasons Sunrooms windows and doors made with CONSERVAGLASS PLUS are now recognized by Energy Star, a government backed program to help businesses and indi- viduals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. Simply stated, by combining the ultimate in low-maintenance with perhaps the best energy- conserving sunroom and the planet, a Four Seasons sunroom or solarium with CONSERVA- GLASS PLUS is the clear choice. For decades, homeowners have let the sunshine (and starry skies, dramatic thunderstorms and gentle snowfalls) into their homes with Four Seasons Sunrooms, a professional designer and builder of sunrooms, solariums and conservatories. All products and services are supported by expert factory-trained sunroom design con- sultants, top quality sunrooms and solarium installation crews and a lifetime limited warranty. The good news is we don’t need to make radical changes to help make a difference. Here are some easy ways you can cut down on your environ- mental footprint: • A typical shower can use over 10 L of water per minute. Shave a few minutes off your shower time or install a low flow shower head to conserve water. • Avoid using harsh insecticides to kill bugs. Try using cayenne pepper or lemon juice if you have an ant problem - ants taste with their feet. • Use natural cleaning products such as those in the Green Works line. These products are as effective as traditional cleaners, but they are 99% natural and are formulated to be biodegradable. • Make good use of a sunny day and line-dry your laundry. Clothes dryers are one of the most energy inefficient household appliances. • Purchase reusable cloth shopping bags to use at the grocery store. • Drinking plenty of water is important but be sure to opt for Brita pitchers and filters instead of drinking bottled water. One Brita pitcher filter can effectively replace up to 300 500mL plastic bottles of water. However, by following a few simple tips, the bathroom will sparkle all year round. DURING THE WEEK • Declutter on a daily basis. Make sure everything has its place with proper storage solutions for common toiletry items and cleaning supplies. • Wipe down shower tiles with a squeegee after each use to prevent build-up of soap and dirt. • Choose hardware finishes that are more forgiving with fingerprints. Delta’s Venetian Bronze or Aged Pewter faucets leave no visible fingerprints and maintain a polished look in between cleanings. ONCE A WEEK • Keep the abrasive cleaners and heavy-duty sponges for the toilet - use a damp cloth and a mild household cleaner to wipe faucets and hardware. Dry and polish with a soft cloth to give finishes an extra shine. • Keep it green to keep it clean! Turn the water off while you work and choose environmentally-friendly and ammonia-free cleaning products. A simple com- bination of vinegar and water is a great option. • Thoroughly clean tubs and showers using any easy spray-on cleaner and let it do the work for you! Handshowers, like Delta’s Innovations wall mounted handshower, make it easy to rinse the tub and shower walls. EVERY FOUR-SIX WEEKS • Remove build-up from shower, tub and sink drains by using this simple method: Pour one cup of baking soda followed by one cup of white vinegar down the drain. Flush with warm water after one hour. • Throw your plastic shower curtain in the washing machine on the gentle cycle to remove any lurking mildew. • If your regular household cleanser is not removing lime or mineral deposits, place a cloth soaked in white vinegar over the deposits for several hours, then try the cleanser again. ONCE A YEAR • Remove lime and mineral deposits from the faucet aerator. Unscrew the aera- tor (and the black sealing gasket above it). Rinse the gasket in clean water and soak the aerator in a 50/50 vinegar and water solution for several hours. The book has had a great year and the Lela Common Award is just icing on the cake.” In the book, Mr. Wright provides political commentary around “three critical days when Canadian politics played on the internation- al stage,” focusing on the controversial visit Trudeau made to Cuba in 1976. The book was published by HarperCollins Canada in January 2007. Mr. Wright will be presented with the $2,500 award during a gala banquet at the Canadian Authors Association’s annual CanWrite! Confer- ence at the University of Alberta in Edmonton on July 5. He’ll also read from his book at a July 4 conference. He has taught at Trent University since 1985 and specializes in Canadian history and foreign policy and sovereignty issues. He’s also written ‘Virtual Sovereignty: Nation- alism, Culture and the Canadian Question’, ‘Hip and Trivial: Youth Culture, Book Publishing and the Greying of Canadian Nationalism’, and ‘A World Mission: Canadian Protestantism and the Quest for a New World Order, 1918–1939’. The Spirit won 2-1. The U15 Spirit waited for home turf advantage to record their first league victory of the season. Rookie sniper leads lacrosse senior ‘B’s past Mohawk By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Travis Bland didn’t expect to be playing the type of role — or having the kind of impact — that he’s having for the Ajax- Pickering Rock this season. The 22-year-old Georgetown resident, in his rookie season with the Rock, has to pinch himself with how good things have gone for him thus far with the senior ‘B’ squad that’s undergoing some changes this season. So far, Bland is second in Rock scoring with 19 points (10 goals, nine assists), sitting only two points behind team captain and veteran Mark Craig. Moreover, he’s current- ly eighth in scoring league-wide thus far this season. “I knew (Rock head coach) Paul (St. John) was counting on me to run with Mark Craig on the right side, but I didn’t think I’d be having the kind of success I’m having right now,” said Bland, who was a late cut of the National Lacrosse League’s Minnesota Swarm last season. Bland added to his point totals with a season-high five-point game (three goals, two assists) in leading the Ajax-Pickering Rock to a 13-8 victory over the Mohawk Stars on the road last Saturday night. The win helped the Rock im- prove its OLA senior ‘B’ lacrosse record to 3-4 on the season. Playing on the right side of the floor with Craig in the middle, Bland has taken full advantage of his opportunities to be a valuable contributor on a young Rock ros- ter. The key to his early success? Bland says it’s all about working hard and listening to the older play- ers at practice. “I just take a lot of pointers from the veterans at practice and I try to work hard and play my game,” said Bland. Rock head coach Paul St. John notes Bland has been a welcome addition to the club this season, putting forth the right attitude right from the start of training camp. “The thing we like about Travis is his consistency, averaging almost three points per game. He comes to us with the attitude to learn, he wants to get better and constantly talks to us about how. We’re not sure how long Travis will play with us at this level but we are quite happy to have him at least for this year,” said St. John. The rookie sniper made no mis- take on the power play against Mo- hawk and also used screens effec- tively in front of the Mohawk net, taking full advantage of picks set by Mike Daley, who stationed himself in front of Mohawk Stars’ goalten- der Grant Crawley, to score two more goals in the decisive victory. Bland credits the veterans for stirring the Rock to action after sleepwalking through the opening period of Saturday’s game against a short-staffed Mohawk squad that only had 11 runners available for the contest. “They took it to us in the first period and a couple of the veterans piped up and said something (at the intermission). Everyone pulled together and pulled us through,” he Bland anything but for Rock Pebbles Record: 3-4 2nd place, OLA senior ‘B’ East Division Other Rock scorers in the victory against Mohawk last Saturday were Jaime Lums- den and Bill McLean with two, Michael Rollings and Daley with one apiece. Other assists went to Craig with four, Daley with three, Clem D’Orazio and Lumsden with two apiece, Mike Miron, Brandon Laforme, Jordan West-Pratt, Ryan Sherwood, and Ron Reed, all with one...Bland played junior ‘B’ lacrosse in Georgetown for the Halton Hills junior ‘B’s be- fore moving on to split time with Kitchener-Waterloo and Mis- sissauga in the junior ‘A’ ranks... Bland also enjoys playing for St. John and assistant coach Jim Veltman, who joined the staff after retiring from playing this season. “I grew up with the Veltmans, so I’ve known him for a little bit. He definitely knows the game better than anyone I know.” ✦ See Rock, Page 36 Travis Bland Required Immediately SECURITY GUARDS We are looking for highly motivated individuals with good written and verbal skills to join our growing team in Durham Region Full training and benefit package provided. After trailing 3-2 in the opening period, the Rock outscored the hosts 11-5 the rest of the way to post their third win of the season. Bland wasn’t the only Rock to contribute on the scoreboard in a major way against Mohawk. Veteran Jamie Plunkett poured in four goals and added an as- sist to also post a five-point night. Bland hopes the Rock can build on last Saturday’s win by posting another win against Durham Region rival Brooklin Merchants at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex tomorrow (Saturday, June 7) at 7 p.m. “We’re looking for a ‘w’, but we know it’s going to be a battle no matter what the outcome is,” said Bland.
