In pleading guilty the boy, now 15, admitted he was at the wheel of the speeding Mazda that lost control and left the roadway after passing another vehicle. Two 15-year-old boys died in the horrific crash; Mr. Awan’s young- est son was one of them. “I buried my son in my place,” the man said between sobs. Sitting nearby, his head bowed, was the boy, who court heard had bought the car for a few hundred dollars -- it’s legal for a 14-year- old to buy a car in Ontario but not to drive -- and had been driving it in the vicinity of Ajax in the days before the fatal crash. The Crown is seeking up to 18 months of custody for the boy, whose name is protected by provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). “I don’t want this boy to be pun- ished too hard,” Mr. Awan said, gesturing toward the boy. The emotional address affected observers and the father of the boy facing sentencing. Central East LHIN board chairman Foster Loucks and director James Meloche took questions for almost two hours. The two made the case that the consolidation of in- patient mental health ser- vices in Scarborough, with the addition of crisis servic- es at the Ajax-Pickering site, would improve the quality of service available to pa- tients. “Change is necessary in order to provide the highest quality of care in a sustain- able manner,” Mr. Loucks said. “This is about trying to sustain our public health system.” Councillors asked ques- tions ranging from the cost of transportation to the Scar- borough facility -- $50,000 on the Rouge Valley Health System’s dime -- to whether the move represents a gen- eral movement of services out of Durham. Services are being en- hanced at the Ajax hospital, including emergency ser- vices, Mr. Loucks said. But that may be a tough sell to residents. “How do you help me look my residents in the eye and assure them and actu- ally make them believe that they’re going to have those services they expect,” asked Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan. The LHIN has been trying to communicate the addi- tions to the Ajax hospital, such as three Intensive Care Unit beds, Mr. Loucks said. But he acknowledged the LHIN hasn’t been entirely successful. “We don’t appear to be winning.” Mayor Ryan also spoke about the divide between Toronto and Durham. “There is a very real di- vide, psychological, emo- tional and physical between Durham Region and Toron- to, a little thing called the Rouge River Valley ... people moved out to this communi- ty because they didn’t want to live on that side,” he said. Mr. Loucks agreed there’s a divide, despite the fact the two hospitals consolidated 10 years ago. “It’s been surprising how little has changed, how strongly people in Durham feel about that consolida- tion, that merger.” Pickering Councillor Bon- nie Littley wanted to know how the plan to move the beds fits with Durham’s population growth. Although there’s been an increase in population, mental health hospital- izations are decreasing, Mr. Meloche said. Many patients get treated in the community as opposed to hospitals. The focus in Dur- ham should be on areas of growth such as emergency services and care for chil- dren and seniors, he said. Bear trip comes to peaceful close PICKERING — Two men escaped injury when their car was peppered with gunshots Saturday evening in Pickering. Durham police are looking for witnesses to the incident, which occurred around 7:20 p.m. at an industrial plaza on Bayly Street near Brock Road. Police said the men were driving away from the rear of the plaza when several shots were fired; the car, a silver BMW, was struck several times. The men drove away unharmed and called police. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 905-579-1520, ext. 2547 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Men escape unhurt as shots hit car bring the bear around. The bear can’t be transported while it’s out, Mr. Pisapio said. The animal has to be on its feet before it can be moved. Students at Vaughan Willard Public School were kept inside for recess Wednesday as a precaution, said Andrea Pidwerbecki, com- munications manager for Durham District School Board. As well, students at Vaughan Willard and William Dunbar were not al- lowed to walk home after school. They were kept in gyms at the two schools until they were picked up by a parent or guardian. ✦ Bear from page 1 Keith Gilligan/ News Advertiser photo A black bear sits in a cage shortly after it was tranquilized. Woman to ride through Ontario to help bridge gap between defeating cancer and recovering fully By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com AJAX — A number of challeng- es come after defeating cancer, and Ajax resident Dee Miller is determined to help survivors push through them. “More and more people are liv- ing with cancer now than dying from it,” she said, adding many still find they have to go through the difficult process of emotion- ally and physically rebuilding their lives. One way she’ll raise awareness of the problem is on her bicycle. Ms. Miller, who defeated cervi- cal cancer five years ago, found it very difficult to fully recover from the disease, despite being in good physical shape. She then found and became the executive director of Renewed Strength, a registered Ontario charity to help fill the gap for cancer patients who no lon- ger qualify for specialized strength and mobility care. The charity of- fers free exercise programs and tools, such as DVDs, videos and classes, for cancer survivors to get them back on track. “One of the things I hear most is ‘I just want to drive’,” she said. On June 10, she’ll hop on her bike at Scrambles Restaurant in Ajax for the charity’s 100-Day Bike Around Ontario For Cancer Awareness, making numerous stops to spread the message and collect donations. Avid cyclist and Ajax Mayor Steve Parish will bike with Ms. Miller from Ajax to Cobourg on the first day, making stops in Whitby and Oshawa. Ajax- Pickering MP Mark Holland will meet her in Toronto on Sept. 17 to accompany her on the ride home, which ends at the Ajax Lion’s Club that day. “I think it’s an extremely impor- tant initiative,” Mr. Holland said. He said he was inspired by an RS walk he participated in a few of years ago in Ajax when, despite miserable weather conditions, the group continued since it’s “noth- ing compared to what people go through with cancer. “It gives you an opportunity to reflect upon what people go through,” he said. She has trained intensely since December for the event, cycling up to six hours a day. She’s been involved in fitness for more than 20 years, and has even developed training programs, but is new to such an intense cycling excursion. However, she’s prepared for the conditions - especially in northern Ontario - having already secured an air horn to fend off the bears. Her mother, RS’s fundraising chairwoman, Bev May, will drive right behind her. “Some kids like to spend time with mom on Mother’s Day,” Ms. May said. “My kid gives me 100 days.” RS is also inviting people to participate in the 100-Day Fit- ness Challenge where those inter- ested follow an exercise program for 100 days. It’s $100 per person to join, and cancer survivors can register for free. Those who join will receive an RS DVD, a walking program, motivational tips, a T- shirt, a pledge sheet, and survivors will get online support through Princess Margaret Hospitals’ Car- ing Voices. Cellphone legislation makes good sense I t’s unfortunate that it sometimes takes a horrible tragedy to spur action. Premier Dalton McGuinty recently said his government will reconsider a ban on using cellphones and other electronic devices while driving. This flip-flop on his stance of a few months ago is believed to be in connec- tion with the May 16 deaths of Erin Reed, 19, and Robyn Taylor, 20, of Colborne, and Kandas Derry, 20, of Baltimore. The three friends died on County Road 25 after the car they were driving did a U-turn in front of an oncoming tractor trailer. The driver was said to be talking on a cellphone at the time of the accident. Durham MPP John O’Toole has been trumpeting cellphone bans for drivers for years and has had his legislation shot down four times. Despite being a Conser- vative MPP, Mr. O’Toole said he is happy with the Liberal government’s decision to revisit the issue. He has offered lengthy amounts of research to Transportation Minister Jim Bradley. Six months ago, Premier McGuinty had a different view of any cellphone ban. “There are provisions right now to be found in the Highway Traffic Act or the Criminal Code that allow for prosecutions for people who are driving carelessly,” Mr. McGuinty said. “So unless and until I get different advice from the people who work our roads and look to their safety, we will maintain our position. “I guess one of the issues then becomes, so where do we draw the line? Do we ban coffee drinking in cars?” The tragedy of Richard Schewe and his two-year-old daughter Mikaela should have been enough to convince the Pre- mier of the importance of such legislation years ago. Back in 2001 the two were killed when the truck Mr. Schewe was driving was crushed by a train at a level crossing in Pickering. Mr. Schewe was on his cell- phone at the time and didn’t notice the flashing red lights. The facts are clear -- cellphones distract drivers. Even good drivers can’t watch the road when dialing a number or aren’t as attentive of the road when chatting. Policing the ban would, of course, be difficult and the legislation may end up being impossible to enforce, but it’s a first step in deterring people from driving while talking. Unfortunately, Durham residents know too well the toll mixing cellphones and driving can take. It seems that the truth is very much the reverse when the medical costs are taken into account. The substances produced by incineration include a range of chemicals known to cause heart disease, leukemias, cancers and birth defects. There is also a fear that some can dam- age our genes and so be passed onto our children and grandchildren, etc. Some of the worst are very small parti- cles that can easily pass through our lungs into our blood stream. Monitoring of the levels of these in chimneys has not proved helpful because they depend on what is being burned that day, wind speed, etc. Moreover, there is no safe level (any amount will cause some disease). Perhaps Durham Regional Council could accept the report of the British Society for Ecological Medicine of December 2005 (available on the Internet), which con- cluded that no further incinerators should be built. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, May 30, 2008 durhamregion.com I ’ve been fairly successful at ignor- ing many of the signs that I am aging. The initial loss of hair, the subsequent greying of the hair, and then, as if mother nature were trying to compensate for the first bit, the ridiculous growing of hair on parts of the body that never had hair before (back, ears, nose). None of those things, as I say though, really reached me. But just lately, as I approach my forty-eighth year, certain behaviours have been cropping up. Unde- niable reminders that time is indeed passing and, more frighteningly, that I am turning into my Dad. Don’t get me wrong. I love the old man. I could do far worse than walk in his foot- steps. It’s not the becoming like my Dad that is alarming, it’s the fact that such a metamorphosis is irrefutable evidence that I am no longer 16 . . . or even 20. For starters, I am becoming a “pocket guy.” As men age we find ourselves car- rying a lot more stuff around with us. For this we need pockets. I used to wonder why my Dad always wore cargo pants and a fishing vest around the place. I now understand. He needed all those pockets for his stuff. What is this stuff? Difficult question. Beyond certain staples; pencils, pens, Swiss army knives, eyeglass screwdriver kits and combs (for our backs) men’s stuff varies from guy to guy. As a younger man, I, for instance, used to be able to arrive home from work, hop out of the car and into the house in sec- onds. Everything I needed was either in my head or in my hand. Now I must sit in the car and gather my stuff. Invariably I have an ipod and a cell- phone to tuck away. I have an electronic voice recorder for storing ideas and thoughts which otherwise would seep out of my brain like water through weep- ing tile. I have my automatic garage door opener, my car keys and of course the little thing I carry with me that allows my petroleum provider to know exactly where I am and what I am spending money on 24 hours a day. I have glasses. Not one pair, but several. Like my kids and their “indoor shoes” I have my car glasses and my indoor glass- es. I also have my sunglasses and a hat. Whereas once upon a time I relished the feel of the sun on my naked head I now realize that that radioactive fireball in the sky is in fact trying to kill me and I must take measures to protect myself. I may have a travel mug and a book and very possibly a map because all of a sudden I am afraid I could get lost in this province that I’ve grown up in. Luckily I have a Swiss army knife. Depending on the weather and the time of the year there will be gloves, loz- enges and perhaps a nasal mister. And of course, change. All men have pockets full of loose change. As we get older we learn the delightful art of jingling this with one hand in the pocket. That is the real sound of male maturity by the way. Whereas at one point a hand in the pocket had other things to toy with, we now play with our change. Whistling while jingling the change is the final stage. Start doing that and you may as well be in a home. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic- writer, saves some of his best lines for his col- umns. The final stage: jingling loose change in your pocket Neil Crone/ Enter Laughing Ajax trustee says no to closure, two Pickering trustees vote yes By Crystal Crimi ccrimi@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The playground will be silent at five Oshawa Catho- lic schools this September. In a five-to-three decision Mon- day night, Durham Catholic Dis- trict School Board trustees voted to close Canadian Martyrs, Father Francis Mahoney, St. Gregory, Holy Cross and St. Michael Catho- lic schools effective the 2008/2009 school year. Oshawa Trustee Fred Jones, Ajax Trustee Janice Oldman, and Whitby Trustee Scott Murdock voted against the closures, intend- ed to address continued declining enrolments. “We will lose students to the public board if we close five Cath- olic schools,” said Trustee Jones, receiving applause from a full au- dience of parents at the education centre in Oshawa. Trustee Jones said he believes the board’s purpose is to promote the Catholic church and its surviv- al, and trustees “would be betray- ing our students, our parents, the Catholic community” by closing all five schools. He said he sup- ports closing three schools, which would still be tragic but reflective of the hard times the board faces. The recommendation to close the schools came from education director Paul Pulla, following an ac- commodation review committee (ARC) process and report that in- cluded community consultation and public meetings. The ARC in June 2007 began looking at 11 Oshawa schools. Initially, it was recommended that six schools close. An option removing St. Hedwig from the chopping block was later added in response to community input about the need to maintain a Catholic school presence in the City’s downtown core. Closing the five schools provides an annual net savings of $1.3 mil- lion, $200,000 less than when St. Hedwig was on the list. Keeping schools open that aren’t properly utilized costs every student in the board, requiring money to be re- covered from other programs and services, says a memorandum to trustees from Mr. Pulla. Trustee Jones said Oshawa car- ried the board for a long time and subsidized other areas. He said he doesn’t think it unreason- able to ask the rest of the board to support some of its schools now. As Catholics, “that’s what we do,” he said. “It becomes where do you draw the line and how fast,” Pickering Trustee Paul Bannister said. At the end of the day, the rest of the board’s students are subsidizing Oshawa, he said. Come Partyon Our Patio! He remains in custody and is charged with aggravated as- sault and assault with a weapon in connection with the stabbing of one of the three victims at the April 5 party, Durham Regional Police said. At about 3:15 a.m. that day, police responded to an armed person call on Shipp Crescent and found a male with knife wounds to his hands in a near- by car. He was treated at hospi- tal and then released. A second male was found with serious life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital. “He had stab wounds to his torso, leg and arm,” DRPS media relations officer Sergeant Paul McCurbin said at the time. The third victim was found at the hospital with stab wounds to his torso, also suffering seri- ous life-threatening injuries. Police believe the stabbings resulted from a dispute at the party that was winding down at about 3 a.m. “We believe there were two groups involved in this skir- mish,” Sgt. McCurbin said. “We don’t think these are random attacks.” DRPS thanked the “many wit- nesses that came forward to as- sist with this investigation.” The incident is still under investi- gation and anyone with new information is asked to contact Detective Dave McFadyen of the 19 Division criminal inves- tigations branch at 1-888-579- 1520, ext. 2528. Brian Wilkins, the Dur- ham Region spokesman for the Red Fridays Founda- tion, has been fielding calls and speaking on GTA radio stations this week, trying to combat negative allega- tions about the Red Fridays Rally. The event will see hun- dreds of cars travel the Highway of Heroes from Trenton to Toronto, ending with a ceremony at Downs- view Park. The procession will in- clude 83 red vehicles, one for every soldier who has died in Afghanistan, and will be led by a donated Dodge Magnum rally car painted with the name of each fallen soldier. At issue are complaints from the original founders of the Red Fridays move- ment -- which encourages Canadians to wear red on Fridays as a show of sup- port for the troops -- who say the rally organizers didn’t have permission to put the names of the sol- diers on the lead car and that the Red Fridays Foun- dation is not a registered charity. Mr. Wilkins said the con- cerns stem from misunder- standings and is distraught by widespread media cov- erage questioning the mo- tives of the event. “It’s discouraging. We just wanted to do some- thing to show our troops we’re behind them,” said Mr. Wilkins, an Oshawa res- ident who spent six months driving a fuel truck on the Canadian Forces base in Kandahar. He said the names of the fallen soldiers on the car are not intended to be an advertisement, partisan political statement or any- thing other than a simple tribute done with the best of intentions. Regardless, reports in the Toronto media have quoted relatives of fallen soldiers saying they want nothing to do with the rally, and want their loved ones names taken off the car. Event organizer Brian Muntz has said he will re- move names from the car if families request it. On the topic of fundrais- ing, Mr. Wilkins confirmed the Red Fridays Foundation is not a registered charity - - a fact that is published on the Red Fridays website. He said this was done intentionally because Ca- nadian law precludes reg- istered charities from do- nating to other registered charities. The foundation plans to do- nate proceeds from Satur- day’s rally to four charities: the Canadian Hearing So- ciety (which supplies vets with TTY phones), Friends of Veterans Canada, Tony Stacey Centre for Veterans Care and the Troop Mo- rale Fund sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion. “We are a non-profit group, we aren’t making any money from this at all,” Mr. Wilkins said. He encouraged people who are uncomfortable do- nating to the foundation to donate directly to one of the above listed charities or to simply attend the rally without making a donation or collecting pledges. “The main goal of this is just to show support for our soldiers over there, to have lots of people come out and take that message to Afghanistan,” he said. So far, Mr. Wilkins said the foundation has raised about $11,000 and has spent $7,500 on costs for the rally, like lighting, a stage and gas for the lead car. Bowmanville resident Paul Caswell doesn’t see any problem with the event. In fact, the father of local fallen soldier Darryl Cas- well will be driving one of the 83 red cars at the front of the procession. “I don’t have any con- cerns at all, I think this is a great thing,” he said. The rally starts at noon on May 31 at Centennial Park in Trenton. The main procession will be released from the park at 3 p.m. and travel to Downsview Park in Toronto, where a cer- emony will be held. OPP, local police and Canadian Army Veteran Riders will escort the procession along the route. Part of Destination Imagination, an annual competition that allows schools to compete in five different creative categories, the Illusionists are practising hard to compete in finals which showcase an original play about a secret, said coach Debra Davis, a teacher at Westcreek Public School. Featuring a character in masquerade, the secret is revealed by constructing three set pieces which are then amalgam- ated into one by the end of the play. Eight teams from schools in Ajax and Pickering are going to the finals -- five of them are from Frenchman’s Bay. In order to get into the finals, teams must compete in On- tario first and place first or second in their challenge and age category. The Ontario competition was held in Etobicoke at the end of March, said Ms. Davis. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, May 30, 2008 PAGE 11 A/Pdurhamregion.com By Jennifer Stone jstone@durhamregion.com DURHAM — An apparent flip-flop by Premier Dalton McGuinty on legislation that would ban cellphones and other electronic distractions while driving is welcome, says Durham’s MPP, who has championed such legislation for years. “In a general sense, I’m very happy,” Durham MPP John O’Toole said, after comments earlier this week from the premier indicating the Liberal government was exploring legislation which would encompass use of all electronic distractions by drivers. It’s about time, said the local MPP. Mr. O’Toole, a Conser- vative, has already spoken with Liberal transportation minister Jim Bradley, offer- ing him reams of research he has done on the issue. “I’m quite happy to share all of that stuff with them,” Mr. O’Toole said. Mr. O’Toole has four times introduced variations on private member’s legisla- tion which would deal with use of cellphones and other electronic devices. The first three times, he called for an outright ban on use of such devices while driving. Earlier this month, he offered a wa- tered-down version which called for a phone ban while driving in community safety zones, within 200 metres of a traffic accident or within 100 metres of a school crossing. Mr. O’Toole’s bill has never made its way through to leg- islation and as recently as six months ago, the premier indicated he wasn’t inter- ested in passing such rules into law. “There are provi- sions right now to be found in the Highway Traffic Act or the Criminal Code that allow for prosecutions for people who are driving carelessly,” Premier McGuinty has been quoted as saying six months ago. “So, unless and until I get different advice from the people who work our roads and look to their safety, we will maintain our position. “I guess one of the issues then becomes, so, where do we draw the line? Do we ban coffee drinking in cars?” Reports indicate the pre- mier’s flip may stem from a tragic accident which claimed the life of three young women May 16 south of Warkworth. Friends Erin Reed, 19, and Robyn Taylor, 20, of Col- borne, and Kandas Derry, 20, of Baltimore, died when the car they were driving was struck by a tractor trailer on County Rd. 25. It’s believed the driver of the car was on the phone at the time of the accident. Mr. O’Toole said he’s surprised such legislation wasn’t passed after the 2001 death of Richard Schewe and his two-year-old daugh- ter Mikaela. They were killed when the truck Mr. Schewe was driving was crushed by a train at a level crossing in Pickering. Mr. Schewe was talking on his phone at the time and apparently didn’t notice the red flashing lights. “It takes these types of things, unfortunately, for governments to take steps,” Mr. O’Toole said. The issue of use of tech- nology in cars is “not going away,” Mr. O’Toole said, add- ing he feels there’s a need to include such matters in driver’s education. “The multitasking is not getting less, it’s getting more,” he said. “That’s the future and he (Mr. McGuinty) should get ahead of it.” -- With files from Torstar Network Remember, all inserts, including those on glossy paper, can be recycled with the rest of your newspaper through your blue box Recycling program. Another benefit is “You can have an extra plate of chips at lunch as well,” said Paul Sherwen, a British cycling champion in 1986 and 1987, who also competed in the Tour de France seven times. This summer, he’ll be a cycling commentator for NBC during the Olympics in Beijing. He was in Ajax last week, join- ing Mayor Steve Parish, in a dis- cussion on the benefits of cycling. They also spoke about ideas needed to make cycling more at- tractive in the GTA. Mr. Sherwen got involved in cycling after his family moved to Britain from Uganda when he was 13. “I hated the city and wanted to get to the country.” Cycling trails are great because they remove the potential of being hit by a vehicle, Mr. Sher- wen said. “The problem is we need to educate motorists,” Mr. Sherwen said. “Motorists, they can get to places quickly, but they want to get there even quicker.” Drivers need to be educated on the fact that they share the road with cyclists, he said. Education and awareness are also necessary, Mayor Parish said. “It can be simple things like a sign on the road saying, ‘Share the Road’.” Having a trail system is “a tre- mendous achievement to ride in a safe manner. When I get on the road these days, I was scared. I’m not the brave sprinter I use to be,” Mr. Sherwen said. “People of my age are con- cerned about our health, the health of our families. It’s a low- impact way of staying healthy,” said Mayor Parish, as to why cy- cling is becoming more popular. Last year Mayor Parish had the chance to cycle in Belgium, Den- mark and Sweden. In Copenhagen, there’s a two- metre-wide strip along roads for cyclists. “When I went out, I had to look both ways, not just for cars, but cyclists.” He saw one parking lot “totally full” of bicycles. The mayor predicted more peo- ple will turn to bicycling “when gas reaches $1.50.” Thousands of Europeans cycle to public transit stations or to work and bicycles left at train sta- tions “are never vandalized. Peo- ple know it will be there (at the end of the day) and it will be safe,” Mr. Sherwen said. When asked what the perfect bike region would look like, the mayor said, “It would look like Durham Region with significant improvements. “This trail from Niagara Falls to Quebec has gaps in it. We have to fill it.” life • style • solutions OSHAWA www.sklargallery.com Exceptional Warranty Superior Construction Fast Delivery 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 905-723-4561 Hours: Mon.• Tues.• Wed. 10-6, Thurs.• Fri. 10-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun.11-5 Durham’s Newest & Largest Sklar Peppler Furnishings Store! *Credit equal to the value of the GST. That’s the message being pro- moted by Durham’s health depart- ment for this year’s National Sun Awareness Week. “With summer around the cor- ner, people will be spending more time outdoors,” said public health nurse Lindsay Veitch in a release from the Region. “We’re reminding everyone to make sun safety a pri- ority and protect themselves from the harmful effects of the sun.” Sun Awareness Week runs to June 1 and the Region encourag- es residents to avoid exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Ms. Veitch said people should use a broad spectrum sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection with at least an SPF of 30. She also suggests wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect the back of the neck and eyes, wearing tightly woven clothing and spend- ing the sun’s peak hours between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the shade. The health department advises that exposure to UV radiant can damage the eyes and skin, leading to cataracts and skin cancer, which is the most common cancer in On- tario. Though preventable, the oc- currence of skin cancer has been increasing in Canada at a fairly constant rate over the past 30 years, with 82,400 cases reported in 2005. The Region is inviting residents to complete a brief survey about its new sun safety website at www. region.durham.on.ca. Survey par- ticipants could win a $50 gift cer- tificate to the store of their choice in Durham. For more information residents can call Durham Health Connection Line at 905-666-6241 or 1-800-841-2729. In pleading guilty the boy, now 15, admitted he was at the wheel of the speeding Mazda that lost control and left the roadway after passing another vehicle. Two 15-year-old boys died in the horrific crash; Mr. Awan’s youngest son was one of them. “I buried my son in my place,” the man said between sobs. Sitting nearby, his head bowed, was the boy, who court heard had bought the car for a few hundred dollars -- it’s legal for a 14-year-old to buy a car in Ontario but not to drive -- and had been driving it in the vicinity of Ajax in the days before the fatal crash. The Crown is seeking up to 18 months of custody for the boy, whose name is pro- tected by provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). “I don’t want this boy to be punished too hard,” Mr. Awan said, gesturing toward the boy. The emotional address affected observers and the father of the boy facing sentenc- ing. During a break he was seen sitting be- side Mr. Awan, his arm around the weeping man’s shoulder, talking softly to him. Ontario Court Justice Mary Teresa Devlin reserved judgment on a sentence. She heard widely varying submissions on the appropri- ate sentence: Crown counsel Telena Mulli- gan said a youth jail term of 12 to 18 months is most appropriate, while defence lawyer Alan Richter recommended a deferred cus- tody term, which amounts to house arrest. Mr. Richter argued that incarcerating the boy, who’s had no previous run-ins with the law, would hinder his chances of reha- bilitation and run counter to the goals of the YCJA, which directs judges to choose custody as a last option for offenders. “(The youth) needs to be put back on the right track where he was before this terrible incident,” Mr. Richter said. Justice Devlin is to sentence the boy next month. Unfortunately, a common problem in many gardens is weed and insect infestations. Not only is it important to know how to effectively treat your garden to keep it pest and disease free, it is also becoming increasingly more important to find alternatives to traditional chemical practices. To care for a healthier gar- den all summer long, the lawn and garden team at Canadian Tire has the following integrated pest control steps and techniques. What is Integrated Pest Management? Integrated Pest Management is an environmentally sensitive approach to pest management. It is a series of steps and techniques to effectively control and maintain pests at an acceptable level using non-chemical or biological practices. Eco-friendly pest control Tips to Pest Prevention • Add good soil with ample depth and organic matter for nutrition • Improve drainage in wet areas and/or replace lawns with other types of landscaping • Check lawns and gardens regularly for first signs of insect, weed and plant disease. Un- fortunately, many of the stages of pest disease occur below the surface of the lawn, which can be difficult to monitor. However, you can look for signs such as brown spots or already dead or dying patches of lawn that pull up easily for signs of disease • Remove diseased leaves, plants and branches to eliminate rotting organic matter. Choose an ergonomic product such as Fiskars telescopic stand up weeder to help protect your back Use Reduced-Risk Solutions • If preventive and mechanical approaches to solving a pest problem have been unsuccess- ful, consider using a reduced-risk pest control product first • Look for the bylaw friendly logo to find reduced- risk products Use Pest Control Products when necessary • Before resorting to using a pesticide, consider all your alternatives such as physical methods like hand weeding, before resorting to chemical solutions • Correct timing of a pesticide application is es- sential for effective control and to ensure the least amount necessary for control is used Sklar Peppler Factory Located 274 Mackenzie Ave., Ajax Hours: Thurs. Sheldon Forde, 21, captured first place at the Canadian Dance Nationals in Guelph re- cently. The win made him eligible to partici- pate in the World Hip-Hop Championships in Bremen, Germany next month. But, a disappointed Forde said he and the others with whom he qualified won’t be head- ing to Germany. Instead, they’ll travel to Mon- treal to compete in the Canadian National Hip Hop Championships on June 21 and 22. A win in Montreal qualifies the dancers for the World Hip-Hop Championships in Las Vegas, which is run by a different organization. Forde dances at Jade’s Hip-Hop Academy in Brampton and it was with about 10 other academy dancers that he qualified for the worlds. He dances solos, duets and in a team. “We’re friends and she asked me if I wanted to dance,” Forde said of dancing at Jade’s. He’s been dancing for about five years. He was playing basketball, but “the season was done and I had nothing to do. I joined a dance team and stayed with it.” Forde will attend George Brown College in Toronto in the fall, studying performing arts. He’s a graduate of Notre Dame Catholic Sec- ondary School. He does Hip-Hop and Popping and Lock- ing and is disappointed about not going to Germany. “I knew for a few months and was telling people,” he said. “It’s embarrassing.” The group can qualify to go again next year. “We can’t get funding,” he said, noting it would cost $3,000 for each member to go. Qualifying for Las Vegas would be “kind of a substitution.” As for competing in Montreal, “the group that won it last year dropped out, so it’s kind of open.” In an e-mail, Jade Jager Clark said Forde’s “dedication to dance is undeniable. “He travels from Ajax to Brampton several times a week to train,” she said. “He is an in- spiration to many of my younger students who look up to him and want to master his technique.” Hip Hop Dance Canada organizes the Mon- treal event, called the Canadian National Hip Hop Championships. The Canadian National Dance Champion- ships, held across the country, is run by Bon- nie Dyer and qualifies dancers for the World Hip Hop Championships in Bremen. Rising Sun martial artists rise up for medals AJAX — Athletes with an Ajax martial arts studio posted solid re- sults at two recent competitions. Rising Sun Martial Arts, under the guidance of Master Cees Keu- kens, sent athletes to the Can Am Cup in Ottawa and the tournament at the Mississauga Martial Arts Centre. Dalton Saxinger, 11, represented Rising Sun at the Can Am Cup, where he earned a silver medal for patterns and a gold for sparring at the blue belt level. He’s been a member of the martial arts studio for the past three years. Meanwhile, Rising Sun sent seven team members to the Mississauga tournament, with all earning top-three finishes in the various categories. Results were: • Jesse Cugno, 8, first in patterns and sparring, blue belt division; • Adriano Roberto, 12, second in patterns and sparring, green belt division; • Derek Stevenson, 11, third in pat- terns, red belt division; • Rejean Pinder, 12, third in sparring, green belt division; • Jaiden Barrios, 8, second in pat- terns and sparring, green belt divi- sion; • Denzel Gravelle, 11, second in pat- terns, red belt division. Monarchs repeat champions St. Mary seniors roar past Richardson in LOSSA soccer final By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Quick goals — one early in the first half and another in the second half — pro- pelled the St. Mary Catholic Sec- ondary School Monarchs to a repeat as Durham Region senior girls’ soccer champs. The top-seeded Monarchs met the second-seeded J. Clarke Rich- ardson Storm in the Lake On- tario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) final, with both teams unbeaten during the regular sea- son and playoffs. On this day, however, despite the best efforts of a determined Rich- ardson squad, the Monarchs reigned supreme. St. Mary blew open an otherwise close game in the second half en route to a 5-1 victory. After leading 1-0 in the first half, the Monarchs netted four in the final half to clinch the championship at Whitby’s Con- sumers Field on Thursday after- noon. The Monarchs now represent LOSSA at the 16-team Ontario Federation of School Athletic As- sociations (OFSAA) Soccer Cham- pionships in Hamilton from June 9 to 11. The catalyst, as it’s been so often this season for the Monarchs, was striker Arin King. She connected for both St. Mary goals to open the first and second halves and added one more for a hat trick in another brilliant outing. Those early goals by King had the net effect of demoralizing the Richardson team, especially in the second half, when the Mon- archs were able to seize control and add to their lead. “The early goals in the first five minutes of the first half and in the first five minutes of the second half put them out of their game,” said a happy Monarchs’ coach Scott McDavid after the contest. It was the second consecutive hat trick registered by King, who also accomplished the feat in the Monarchs’ 3-1 semifinal victory over the Dunbarton High School Spartans on Tuesday. In addition to King’s scoring touch, the Monarchs’ also paid attention to defensive details, which also went a long way to nailing down the repeat LOSSA crown, said McDavid. “We talked about team defence before the game,” he said. “Ev- eryone on the field played good defence today and when we play good defence, that also helps our offence, too.” McDavid, joined on the side- lines by co-coaches Melanie Cay- ford and Joe Visconti, was effu- sive about his team’s effort in the final in order to repeat as champs and head back to OFSAA. “It was just an amazing game,” he said. “It was the best game of the season for every single player. I couldn’t ask for more. “It was so special (to repeat). I’ve been coaching some of the girls for four years and I wanted this one more than last year. I’m really excited for the girls to go back to OFSAA and we have a good shot at doing something this year.” Richardson coach Trish Goff said she was proud of her players for competing hard for most of the final. “We stayed with them for most of the game, but we fell short in the second half,” said Goff. “It’s disappointing, but I think we played hard and put forth our best effort.” She noted the game plan was to contain the Monarchs’ talent- ed strikers and forwards but, in the end, they were able to break through in the final half. “They had a few strong for- wards and we did our best to con- tain them, which was difficult. It was tough for us to stay with their key strikers. They were able to focus in on our key strikers and shut us down.” Nicole Renouf and Shelby Forza scored the other Monarchs goals. Amanda Morris scored the lone Richardson marker. Clarke Richardson Collegiate Storm’s Jessie Reed during the LOSSA ‘AAAA’ senior girls’ soccer final at Whitby’s Consumers Field on Thursday afternoon. The Monarchs repeated as champs with a 5-1 victory. Cougars down Dwyer for LOSSA title AJAX — Undeterred by being one of the lower seeds, the Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Cougars junior girls peaked at exactly the right time in the soccer season. The Cougars, the sixth seed in the Lake Ontario Secondary School Ath- letics (LOSSA) playoffs, ended up as No. 1 when it counted after defeat- ing Oshawa’s Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School Saints 3-1 in the junior final at Whitby’s Consum- ers Field on Thursday. It was the first-ever LOSSA junior girls’ soccer championship for the north Ajax school. Notre Dame co-coaches Michelle Tonna and Jon Di Ianni noted it was whistle-to-whistle effort by the players that enabled the Cougars to clinch the title. “We had consistent effort by all the players on the field. They all played their roles,” says Di Ianni. He added goalkeeper Halle Liv- ingstone and the back line also came up with solid efforts to thwart any Dwyer incursions into Notre Dame’s end of the field. Chelsea Santos supplied a two- goal effort for the Cougars; Veronica Torres added the other marker. To advance to the final, the Cou- gars defeated Uxbridge Secondary School 1-0 in the semifinal. In the quarter-final, Notre Dame defeated Dunbarton High School 1-0. The Cougars also defeated J. Clarke 2-0 in the preliminary playoff game. Team members are Melanie D’Ornelles, Natalie Wright, Vanessa Morra, Brooke Ihnat, Erika Yapsam, Jessica Koscik, Alisha Glode, Nalle Livingston, Alysia Thomasos, Sa- mantha Kudra, Allison Raposo, Timiksh Fridal, Veronica Torres, Chelsea Santos, Ashley Wray, An- tonette Small, and Sydney O’Neill.
