After a number of Doris Madder’s friends and neighbours at the seniors’ residence on St. Martin’s Drive com- plained to her about the reduced hours of Flag Bus 3 (Flag 3), in Pickering, she decided to do something about it. “People just sit back and do noth- ing,” she said. Ms. Madder, who helped bring the Flag Bus (a small, accessible bus with a regular route) service to Pickering in the first place, has collected more than 160 signatures from seniors who live along the route, and plans to pres- ent them to the Region. At the begin- ning of January, along with cuts to other routes, Durham Region Tran- sit reduced the Flag 3 route hours by about an hour at the beginning of the day and at the end. The bus begins its route at 10:30 a.m. and finishes around 4:30 p.m. The first stop it makes at St. Martin’s Drive each day is at 11:10 a.m. and the last at 4:10 p.m. “People just have got to rush around in the hours they’re giving,” Ms. Mad- der said. She explained a lot of seniors she talks to like to get out in the morn- ings for appointments and to run er- rands, and said a trip to the Pickering Town Centre ends up costing $7 or $8 in a taxi. Also, since it stops running around 4 p.m., seniors have a tough time getting to their night meetings at the Rouge Hill Senior’s Club, for ex- ample. “I don’t think we’re really asking for too much,” she said. “We’re not asking for the moon or anything.” She believes seniors are often overlooked on these issues. Phil Meagher, DRT’s deputy general manager, said the transit agency has a very large area to provide service to and has to decide how to run the service effectively and efficiently. DRT looks at all bus routes, and receives reports for each on a monthly basis. Included in the reports are spot checks and information collected through the electronic fare boxes. He said the times were reduced on Flag 3 because re- ports showed few people used it in the mornings. “We were running around almost empty,” he said, adding since the service was reduced, the transit de- partment has only received one com- plaint. He noted a lot of people will sign petitions, even if they don’t use the service. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean has tried to call Ms. Madder to hear her concerns, but hasn’t been able to reach her. “We certainly do have to make sure our seniors are mobile because if they’re mobile, they’re more func- tional and there’s nothing worse than having cabin fever,” he said. Magic number for municipalities is $800 million By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Municipalities will cash in on big provincial surpluses under a new plan by the Province to funnel more money to infra- structure in good years. Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan announced on Wednesday that his govern- ment will introduce legislation that would earmark part of the Province’s surplus for municipal projects like roads, bridges, tran- sit and housing once the surplus hits $800 million. At that point, $200 million would go to the municipalities and $600 million towards paying down the debt. Surplus cash above the $800 million mark would also flow to communities for infra- structure. Under current rules, all of the surplus must pay down the debt. “I think it’s a great step forward. Not that I’m a big fan of surpluses, but surpluses do happen and municipalities certainly could use the infrastructure funding,” said Region of Durham Chairman Roger Anderson. The money will be distributed based on population. With just under five per cent of Ontarians living in the region, Durham would receive roughly $9.5 million if $200 million is being doled out. When asked what the money could be used for, Mr. Anderson rattled off a list of a half dozen roads that need improvement. It could also be used for transit upgrades, so- cial housing, since there’s a lengthy waiting list in Durham, or bridges. “We have a lot of bridges, especially in north Durham, that need some investment,” he said. The Province has forecast a $750-mil- lion surplus for the fiscal year that ends on March 31. However, when final budget numbers are in, it may end up higher than last year’s sur- plus of $2.3 billion. Mr. Anderson will ask staff to have some proj- ects ready to go in July and August in case the Province does generate enough of a surplus. “The only downside is you never know if there’s going to be a surplus until the middle of the year,” said Mr. Anderson. However, he pointed out, there isn’t a mu- nicipality in Ontario that couldn’t use more infrastructure money and it’s a smart way to spend extra cash. “People see the money at work for them and I think that’s a good thing,” he said. -- With files from TorStar News services C ome by and see the setting which has earned Orchard Villa its exceptional reputation for retirement living for 28 years in the Pickering community. Members of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #606 an- nounced the Easter Parade scheduled for Saturday, March 22 has been cancelled due to the heaps of snow that have been dumped on Pickering. City officials and Ladies Aux- iliary members agreed preparing the route would be costly and labour-intensive, and the best way to ensure public safety is to cancel it. The members promise a special parade next year and wish everybody a Happy Eas- ter. Lots and lots of snow to blame for cancelling Easter Parade Possums, lemurs, hawks on display By Josie Newman jnewman@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Antoine and Justine push branch- es back with their arms as they make their way through the swamp. Looking around, there is no mud, grass or trees but only a carpet and a screen with images of a swamp, waterfalls and a forest - - and a room full of chil- dren. The location is the Ontario Power Generation Information Centre. They are busy children, wriggling in their seats and laughing as Meghan Woodworth, a worker with the Earth Rangers, brings out a Virginia Opossum named Putter and shows him to all the children in the room. Amidst the oohes and ahhs, she tells the crowd opossums can have up to 24 babies at one time, and can play dead if seriously threatened by a predator. “What do we use water for? What do opossums and other animals use it for?” asks Eliza Hynes, an- other Earth Ranger, and shows pictures of dirty drinking and bathing water that animals must use because of human pollution. Suddenly, Ms. Wood- worth appears with a ring-tailed lemur named Cosmo. After she tours the room with eight-month- old Cosmo, the crowd is told lemurs are found only in Madagascar and can jump 12 times the length of their bodies. The children smile and giggle at the round- faced little animal with a tail that’s longer than his body as he jumps several feet across the room from Ms. Woodworth’s shoul- der to Ms. Hynes’ shoul- der. Ms. Hynes informs them lemurs find water in streams, lakes and rivers. As she takes the chil- dren further through the pastoral scene, it becomes apparent the stream bed has dried up and there is only a brown ditch in its place. Ms. Hynes then shows the children practical ways they can help pre- serve water, including running less tap water, putting a spacesaver in the back of their toilets so they can save five pop bottles of water each time they flush, and not littering. “We use too much water in our houses and schools. At Earth Rangers, we learn to use less water every day,” she says as Ms. Woodworth brings out Shriek, a red-tailed hawk, and has him perch on her gloved hand. Indigenous to Ontario, the hawks mate for life. Located in the Kort- wright Centre in Wood- bridge, Earth Rangers was launched in 2004 to help inspire children with a passion to build a last- ing environment, says Ms. Woodworth. Two teams, which each include a handler, a pre- senter and three animals, tour schools and other fa- cilities frequented by stu- dents in the Greater To- ronto Area. Antoine, 11, says he found the presentation ”pretty interesting and ed- ucative. We saw how dif- ferent animals live. I was pretty impressed. I saw a lemur, a hawk, and an opossum.” Justine, his nine-year- old sister, said, ”I like to find out how we can help the animals. At earth Rangers, we learn to use less water every day.’ -- MEGHAN WOODWORTH ‘This is what it costs for driving recklessly in our town’ AJAX — The Town is going to spend $95,000 in an attempt to slow down motorists travelling on Old Harwood Avenue. The ‘traffic-calming measures’ include raised crosswalks, curb extensions and centre medians on Old Harwood from Chapman Drive north to the western leg of Lax Avenue. A public meeting will be held in the spring to gather ideas and input. From that, council will review the staff plan, with construction to start in the fall. During a recent meeting of council’s commu- nity affairs and planning committee, Ward 4 local Councillor Pat Brown pointed to the money the Town is spending on slowing down traffic. “Mr. Taxpayer, you can reduce your taxes by slowing down. This is a major cost to the Town if every street had traffic calming on it. This is what it costs for driving recklessly in our town,” Coun. Brown stated. Murray Walker, a traffic analyst for the Town, said if residents are in support, “we will develop a traffic-calming measure.” Support means 50 per cent of residents on a street responding to a request, with 60 per cent of those supporting it, he noted. Old Harwood is the only street scheduled for traffic calming this year. Streets being considered next year include: Finley Avenue from Westney Road to Lake Driveway, and Rands Road from Fin- ley to Westney; Ravenscroft Road from Westney to Delaney Drive; Ritchie Avenue from Westney to Kingston Road; Delaney from Church Street to Westney; Elizabeth Street from Old Kingston Road to Kearney Drive South; and, Linton Avenue from Sherwood Road West to Kearney Drive South. Ritchie Avenue is in Ward 3 and local Council- lor Joanne Dies said, “We’ve tried everything to slow traffic down. There’s not much left.” She noted stop signs have been put in, lines painted on roads, but motorists continue to speed on the street. “A lot of it is short-cutting traffic,” Mr. Walker said. “It’s an ongoing problem,” Coun. Dies stated. “I’m down there all the time. I don’t know how people can speed with all those stop signs.” THE COMFORT I WANT “I am truly comfortable here. The change applies to the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), which also includes Clarington and Whitby, and represents about 1,200 workers. In total, there are approxi- mately 12,300 unemployed people in the Oshawa CMA. Provincially, the unemployment rate fell 0.2 per cent to 6.1 per cent. The national rate re- mained steady at 5.8 per cent. The numbers show continuing weakness in manufacturing, an important component of the job market in Durham. Though Toronto’s unem- ployment rate fell 0.2 per cent, it’s still slightly higher than Durham’s at 6.5 per cent. PICKERING — After receiv- ing top ratings in Communities in Bloom last year, the City of Pickering will show off its talents at the Canada Blooms festival this weekend. The flower and garden festival, the largest of its kind, takes place from March 12 to 16 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, and attracts more than 100,000 people. Pickering entered the provincial CIB competition for the first time in 2007, and was awarded the highest rating, ‘5 blooms’. Thus, it was chosen to be one of the showcase municipalities at the festival. “Our participation in this high- profile event will promote our city to thousands of event-goers and validates our growing reputation as one of the very best places in Canada to call home,” Mayor Dave Ryan said in a press release. Pickering will set up a Com- munities in Bloom booth, and the Backwoods Players will perform ‘A Spirit Walk’, which recreates the participation of Pickering’s early settlers in the Rebellion of 1837. The performance demonstrates the community spirit that defines Pickering, said Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean. “Communities in Bloom is not just about plants and flowers,” he said in a press release. “It’s about partnerships and working together to achieve a common goal.” ‘A Spirit Walk’ is at 7 p.m.. The tim- ing is out of our hands but in the best-case scenario, we anticipate approval late this year or early next year,” says Ron Bordessa. “We’re very strong in engineer- ing -- automotive and engineering -- so we fully anticipate there are doctoral candidates already at- tending the school. Others will be attracted by the program and by world-renowned faculty members who are here,” he says. Marc Rosen, dean of mechani- cal engineering at the UOIT, was a Ryerson University professor and department chairman while Greg Naterer is a mechanical engineer- ing professor and specialist with the UOIT’s hydrogen production unit, leading the most advanced team in Canada, said Richard Mar- ceau, provost for the university and an engineer himself. Pickering blooms beyond Durham’s borders UOIT to launch first PhD program Takes over in Oshawa L ong-time junior hockey coach John Winder must have some cat-like blood surging through his veins. That’s because, no matter the situation, the Ajax resident always lands on his feet or, in his case, behind the bench. After head coaching stints of varying lengths with the Pickering Panthers and the Ajax Attack of the OHA Ontario Pro- vincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League, Winder begins the 2008-09 season as the new head coach of the Oshawa-based Durham Fury. And, the Courtice Secondary School teacher definitely has an affinity for coach- ing Durham Region tier II junior squads. By joining the Fury, Winder has worked in a coaching capacity with all four Durham Region junior ‘A’ squads. Prior to joining the Panthers, he served as an assistant coach with the Bowmanville Eagles. The two-time South Conference coach of the year -- winning the award once with the Panthers and again with the Attack -- is looking forward to another challenge of pushing the Fury, which finished out of the playoffs this past season, into the post- season next year. “Absolutely,” says Winder who’ll join the Fury as their fifth head coach in the past three seasons. “We have a plan going in and myself and (interim GM) Peter Tosh have agreed on everything, now we just have to get things going.” And, Tosh is similarly excited about hav- ing Winder aboard to guide the Fury next season as a replacement for former bench boss Grant Musselman, who elected not to return for the coming season. “John has been a head coach in this league, and a successful one having been the South Division coach of the year twice,” Tosh told Oshawa This Week. “We had quite a bit of interest in the job, but we wanted him to be our guy.” Winder says candidly he had hoped to remain the Attack’s head coach in his hometown. But, the Attack management shifted its direction -- one he was not comfortable with, thus his decision to step down early last season. “If I had of had the opportunity to coach the way I wanted to do, it could have turned out differently,” he says of his Attack experience. Winder is no stranger to the Fury, hav- ing joined the team as an assistant coach under Musselman only weeks after step- ping down as the head coach of the Attack 12 games into last season. Being an assis- tant, says Winder, was a definite plus as he and Musselman were able to bounce ideas of one another. Winder plans to take some of his for- mer Ajax Attack and Pickering Panthers assistant coaches with him, as Attack assistant Trevor Nkiwane has signed with the Fury. Also, Bill Brady, a former Pan- thers assistant and former head coach of the Cobourg Cougars last season, has also agreed to join Winder’s staff. Al Rivett’s column appears every third Friday. E-mail arivett@durhamregion. com. University meeting the high expectations it set for itself N ot too long ago, a university in Durham seemed little more than a dream. And, that such a facil- ity could aspire to be great, right out of the gate, aiming high and reaching those heights, well, that seemed more like a pipe dream. But, as the saying goes, the proof is in the pudding and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology is on a roll, with big news breaking almost daily in the last couple of weeks. This week we learned the UOIT in five years is slated to be the home of a $10.3- million centre for cyber-crime research. The brainchild of Bernadette Schell, the UOIT’s dean of business and informa- tion technology, the centre would attract law enforcement and other experts from Canada and around the world and focus on developing strategies and approaches to deal with crimes such as internet child pornography, credit card exploitation and data theft. Already retained by the university is Paul Gillespie, the former head of the Toronto Police Services’ child exploitation unit, who is now head of the Kids’ Internet Safe- ty Alliance (KINSA), a charity that trains cops on how to police cyberspace. “UOIT is such an advanced institution it’s a perfect fit for my life experiences with their PhDs,” he told the Metroland Durham Region Media Group. Space continues to be an issue at the university as enrolment climbs and pro- grams become more widely-known and popular. Consider that the UOIT opened its doors just four-and-a-half years ago to 912 full-time students. Today, there are almost as many alumni and the university has roughly 5,000 students. As of last month, according to the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre, 5,978 high school stu- dents had applied to the UOIT for full-time studies this fall. Of them, 3,275 made the UOIT their first, second or third choice. With space at a premium, the UOIT is considering moving its faculty of education to Oshawa’s downtown core as early as this fall. It’s a move that Oshawa Mayor John Gray would warmly welcome as contribut- ing to downtown revitalization. The strong possibility of a medical school down the road and the UOIT’s first PhD program in mechanical engineering, to be launched within a year, also point to boom years. There were many doubters when found- ing president Gary Polonsky spent years advocating for a university in Durham Region. ‘Great idea; won’t happen in my lifetime’, many thought. The university’s not only here, it’s flourishing and, under the leadership of current president Ron Bordessa, is on course to become a leading institution in Canada and, dare we dream, the world. How many more times must we make the trek? My friends ask us, ‘why do it? These events are held by church and other groups and include weddings. The events result in more garbage and dumping in parks, which then costs the Town money for clean-up. A permit would be required if there are more than 15 people, Mr. Hannan noted. The updated bylaw also makes it an offence to dump household garbage or hazardous waste in a park. With a reduction in garbage collection, people are dumping more trash near gar- bage receptacles in parks. Some of the garbage includes hazard- ous materials, such as syringes, blood- soaked rags and automotive fluids. In addition to the cost of picking up the waste, there’s also a concern with Town staff handling hazardous waste, he noted. Wards 3 and 4 Regional Councillor Col- leen Jordan said, “The amount of money we invest in our parks, I hope there’s not too many instances we have to use this.” There are also regulations on using bar- becues for cooking. They would be allowed, but fuel would be limited to charcoal and propane, he said. Jeff Stewart, the manager of environ- mental services, said receptacles for hot ashes could be provided. A permit would cost $100 for events with under 100 people and $200 for those with more than 100 people. The renovations work, totalling $387,125, is to be completed by March 28. The site is at Bayly Street and MacKenzie Avenue. It will travel along the Highway of Heroes, Hwy. 401 from Trenton through Northumberland County and Durham Region. Repatriation ceremonies have taken from 30-to-45 minutes, which would see the motorcade pass through Cobourg and Port Hope around 3 p.m. and enter Durham Region between 3 and 3:30 p.m. Military police are investigating the death of the Canadian soldier, who was found dead Tuesday af- ternoon in his sleeping quarters at the Kandahar Airfield. Bombardier Ouellet, 22, was with the 1st Regiment Royal Ca- nadian Horse Artillery, based in Shilo, Man. His regiment had been dispatched in recent weeks to Af- ghanistan. He is the 80th Cana- dian soldier to die in Afghanistan. A statement released by the Department of National Defence said enemy action had been ruled out in Bombardier Ouellet’s death. The military released no further in- formation, citing the investigation. For coverage of the motorcade see our web site, newsdurhamregion. com, later this evening. The police are playing in a global arena.....UOIT is such an advanced institution it’s a perfect fit for my life experiences with their PhDs,” said Paul Gillespie, former head of the child exploitation unit at Toronto Police Services and the first director-in-residence at the centre. The fledgling centre has received $125,000 from UOIT and a $240,000 loan from UOIT’s advancement office for start-up costs and to procure the services of Mr. Gillespie, said Bernadette Schell, dean of the faculty of business and information technology. “We’ve been speaking in general terms to our stakeholders and now we’re ready to go out and raise the $10.3 million funding. We’re expecting both private- and public- sector money,” said Ms. Schell, who came up with the idea for the centre six years ago. Development of the centre is expected to take place in three phases over five years. UOIT is trying to get researchers who can develop cyber-crime solutions within 24 to 36 months. “They’ve been working in their own research space so when they come to us, they’ve finished the research. We’re hop- ing this will become a national Centre of Excellence,” said Ms. Schell. In 2003, 50 academic administrators, in- cluding Ms. Schell, interested in internet security met to discuss cyber-crime. In 2006 more than 120 delegates from around the world met in Markham for the fourth annual Privacy Security Trust, and last November a conference on game development and secu- rity related to game development was held. “We want to combat strategies to the next wave of crime. In the U.S., they have a com- puter emergency response team at Carn- egie-Mellon (University) and they’ve done wonderful things to secure cyberspace from threats to national security and other things. National security could be a concern here eventually -- with the nuclear plants, all it takes is one circuit breaker to trip up power in Ontario,” said Bruce Hurley, major gift of- ficer for the advancement office at UOIT. “I think it’s good because we have a unique talent from several different fields here. We’re hoping to become the nose for crime along with Concordia University, Uni- versity of New Brunswick, and University of Calgary,” said Ms. Schell. Microsoft helped develop software for the cyber-crime research centre, said Mr. Gil- lespie. “The software allows law enforcement of- ficials globally to connect. There are about 10 different countries who use this software now, including Australia,” said Mr. Gillespie, who is head of Kids’ Internet Safety Alliance (KINSA), a registered charity that trains cops on how to police the internet. KINSA also raises funds to bring police from various countries to train them. So far, UOIT has hosted or will soon host police forces from Chile, Romania and Brazil for software and cyber-crime training. “It’s a good thing the centre is at UOIT be- cause there’s already expertise here around this issue. We offer a masters in information technology security so we have a good plat- form for people to work in this area,” said Ron Bordessa, president of UOIT. Darlington Generating Station near Bow- manville is one of two sites the province is considering in its plan to bring on two re- placement nuclear reactors considered the largest and most complex the province has ever seen. Bruce Power near Kincardine is also being eyed as the potential site for the mega-proj- ect. Minister of Energy Gerry Phillips outlined Friday a two-phase competitive Request For Proposal (RFP) process to select a nuclear reactor vendor from among four firms in- cluding one Canadian company. “From Ontario Power Generation (OPG)’s perspective we are very pleased to hear the government has initiated the process,” said John Earl, an OPG spokesman. The announcement is the next step in the government’s 20-year energy plan, first an- nounced in June 2006. The existing power plants have the capacity to provide 14,000 megawatts capacity but currently operate at only 11,500 because some units are not operating. Darlington currently has four nuclear reactors compared to Bruce Power’s six. Pickering Generating Station is OPG’s only other nuclear power plant site and has six units in operation. Sylvia Kovesfvalvi, a spokeswoman with the Ministry, said the province hopes to have the winning vendor and a negotiated deal reached by the end of the year. It’s not known when the site will be selected. “The expectation is we will break ground in 2012 and it’s expected to begin generating power in 2018,” said Ms. Kovesfvalvi. “It will be one of the largest, most complex projects of its kind.” Darlington has never had its reactors re- furbished but Bruce has two units currently being refurbished. Bruce and Pickering have both had units refurbished in the past. The Darlington units came into service be- tween 1989 and 1993, and have not reached the stage when major refurbishment such as retubing may be required, said Ms. Koves- fval. Earlier this month, Darlington received a second consecutive five-year operating licence from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Four internationally recognized vendors will be invited to participate in the first phase of the proposal process: - AREVA NP - US Evolutionary Pressur- ized Reactor - Atomic Energy of Canada Limited - ACR 1000 Advanced CANDU Reactor - GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy - Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor - Westinghouse Electric Company - AP 1000(TM) nuclear power plant There are four CANDU reactors that oper- ated at almost 90 per cent capacity in 2007 at the plant. Darlington’s existing reactors provided about 17 per cent of the province’s electricity. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, March 14, 2008 PAGE 19 A/Pdurhamregion.com Turn your basement into a living space (NC)-When touring a model home, don’t forget to go off the beaten track and visit the basement. Though it may appear underwhelming compared to the freshly painted and perfectly decorated main and upper floors, the basement has the potential to become anything you want it to be. All it takes is a little imagination and a plan. “A finished basement provides ho- meowners with an additional space to use as a relaxing family room, a game room, quaint bedroom or cre- ative workshop,” says Brett Hender- son, an insulation expert for Owens Corning Canada. “Finishing a base- ment can allow you to take advantage of the space, while also adding to the value of your home.” The best time to transform your basement into a living area is when your new home is being built. It’s less disruptive and cost effective to insulate prior to mov- ing in. You can then plan and create a space that suits your needs. It’s up to you whether you want to take on the challenge, hire a contractor. Whether your basement is a do-it yourself project or if you’re working with a builder, the project begins with insulation. To finish a basement, start by placing a moisture barrier against the inside of the concrete wall from the floor to finished grade level. Then, build a standard wall frame wall using 2x4 or 2x6 wood studs and place it in front of the concrete wall. Install R-20 PINK fiberglas batt insula- tion between the studs and ensure the inner surface of the batts are flush with the inside surfaces of the studs. Using PINK fiberglas batt insulation will form a solid thermal barrier between studs and conserve energy to help reduce heating and air conditioning costs. Lastly, don’t forget to install a continuous vapour retarder over the entire wall surface and drywall. Finishing the basement can turn an otherwise dull space into a show stopper. It’s up to you, and your imagination, to decide what you’re going to do. For more information on basement insulation, call 1-800-GET-PINK or visit www.owenscorn- ing.ca. home SWEET home • Advertising Feature durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 20 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, March 14, 2008 Town wants to honour outstanding citizens AJAX — The deadline is fast approaching to nominate someone for the Ajax Civic Awards and other awards recognizing outstanding citi- zens. Unity, a diversity group which began last September, is for students in Grades 9 to 12 who want to raise awareness to stop racism and effect positive change, said Anna Harrington, one of the group’s members. Anna and several other Unity mem- bers led two days of workshops at the Pickering Public Library for students on March Break. Activities consisted of group play, like intertwining each other’s arms together in a group huddle, singing songs like ‘Iron it out, iron it out! Smooth....’, and having group discussions about oppression and privilege in soci- ety. Unity meets weekly at the Pickering Public Library and, so far, consists of students from Pine Ridge Secondary and Dunbarton High schools, said Ms. Harrington. She said the group hopes students from other area high schools come on board soon. Learn how to resolve conflicts efficiently at work By Christy Chase cchase@durhamregion.com DURHAM — As a child, Gil McElroy was fascinated with two books given to him by his great uncle Frank. That fascination is reflected today in Razzle Dazzle: The Uses of Abstraction, an exhibit at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery cu- rated by McElroy. “My great uncle Frank left me this two-volume set of photo- graphs from the First World War,” he said. “I’ve had them since I was a kid.” Some of the photographs were of ships painted in geometric patterns and bright colours. “They always intrigued me. I kept coming back to them.” As he grew older he learned the paint jobs on the ships were optical illusions, designed to fool the eyes of German Navy sub- mariners and keep allied ships safe. They were known as Dazzle ships. McElroy has married paint- ings of these ships with abstract art from the mid-20th century, much of it from the RMG’s per- manent collection. “We think of abstract art as art for art’s sake, as just useless stuff,” he said. “Abstract art has a function.” During the First World War, British artist, Norman Wilkinson, realized abstraction could de- ceive the eye of submariners. “He felt he could fool the eyes of submariners. These ships were puzzling for a submarine cap- tain looking through a periscope, under a great deal of stress. You could fool his eyes. You could make him think the ship was closer or moving in a different direction,” McElroy said. “This was before the days or radar and sonar. It can alter what he sees.” That optical illusion of the Daz- zle ships is evident in abstract art, he said. The use of colours, lines, shapes can “reshape the optical space that we perceive. It’s not something separate, it’s something we manufacture.” By juxtaposing two colours, art- ists can make one colour recede and the other pop out. Other im- ages, if you stare at them long enough, will produce an after image, usually in a reverse co- lour but accurate. One painting does this so strongly, McElroy can’t look at it for very long or it produces an after image similar to the auras he experiences dur- ing a migraine. Abstraction came to Canada during the war on the side of those war ships. Canadian war artist Arthur Lismer saw these Dazzle ships in Halifax and was drawn to the Dazzle, McElroy said. He saw beyond convention- al landscapes and representation into abstract, he said. In his war- time work, he mixes that abstract of the Dazzle into his representa- tional works. The use of abstraction shifted from “the utilitarian needs of the military to the aesthetic concerns of the visual arts,” McElroy writes in the exhibit catalogue. Artists learned the lessons of camou- flage, which had a major impact on abstract art. Alongside abstract art from the gallery’s collection, you’ll find paintings of Dazzle ships, on loan from the Canadian War Museum and the Dalhousie Art Gallery. The exhibit will travel to Prince Edward Island this fall and Halifax in January 2009. While many people often com- ment that their children can cre- ate abstract act, McElroy sug- gests keeping an open mind -- and open eyes -- while viewing the exhibit. There is more than meets the eye, he said. The gallery is located at 72 Queen St., in downtown Osha- wa. The exhibit runs until March 30. Peschiso- lido is expected to run a soccer camp in conjunction with the Pickering Soccer Club in the city in July. English soccer star Peschisolido to run summer camp in Pickering Upcoming venture to give back to grassroots, says former city resident PICKERING — A former Pickering resident who’s enjoyed a long and successful career at the top levels of English soccer will re- turn home this summer to give back to the grassroots of the sport. According to Pickering Soccer Club business manager Shelly Au- gustin, work is under way to allow local soccer star Paul Peschisolido to conduct a soccer camp under the auspices of the PSC this July. He’s expected back in Pickering in May to finalize plans for the camp. In the interim, Peschiso- lido, whose parents still reside in Pickering, conducted a meet-and- greet and clinic at the Metro Sport soccer facility in Scarborough on March 9. A number of PSC players turned out to meet the star striker and take part in the clinic at the indoor field. Peschisolido, 36, who’s currently playing for Luton Town FC, has played 16 years in England, where he’s had career stops at a number of top-level clubs including Birming- ham City, Stoke City, West Brom- wich Albion, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield United, Norwich City and Derby County. He’s also played 53 games for the Canadian national team and was voted player of the year in Canada in 1996. Peschisolido is apparently anx- ious to return home to Canada and attend to the youth soccer camp -- to be called the Pesch Premiership Academy -- in Pickering. The pro- gram is designed to help young as- piring Canadian soccer players gain confidence and hone their skills to achieve their soccer aspirations. “At a very young age, I had always dreamt of becoming a professional soccer player. After achieving my goals in England, I now want to share the same opportunity with those young players with the same dreams,” said Peschisolido in a press release. PSC head coach Tony La Ferrara is excited to have Peschisolido back in his home community to work with the young and emerging soc- cer stars of the future. “Soccer begins at the grassroots level and we are excited to have Paul share his knowledge and skill with the young players and the fu- ture soccer stars in our community,” said La Ferrara in a press release. John was surrounded by family, daughter Kelly (Chuck), sons John (Suzanne) and Derek (Cate), sisters Mary and Kay and brothers Steve and Terry who will mourn the loss of a wonderful father and brother. John was born and raised in Toronto to parents Richard and Bridget on November 9, 1938. In 1962 he mar- ried his wife, Estelle (nee Beamish), who predeceased him in 2005. John's eight grandchildren, (Ryan, Brett, Kaitlin, Hailey, Josh, Lynda, Ava and Nash) will miss his presence at family dinners, his generosity, humour, and his unfailingly good advice. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1956 and was a proud veteran. A dedicated firefighter for 31 years, John served with the former East York Fire Department, retiring in 1993 with a record of excellent service and a history of legendary practical jokes. John will be remembered for his exuber- ance and warmth. He was an excellent story teller and listener, who loved laughter and did much good. John was a consummate Irishman and a proud Canadian. John was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed working at various times for the Toronto Argonauts, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Molson Indy. An avid golfer, John had been most recently employed by Coppinwood Golf Course in Uxbridge. John had a keen interest in hockey and derived tremendous enjoy- ment from watching his children and grandchildren play the game at various arenas throughout the GTA. He will be remembered for the words of encour- agement he offered freely not only to his own players, but to others as well. John was always happy to spend time with fellow veterans at the Uxbridge Le- gion as well as other Legions in the areas he visited while on vacation. The family wishes to thank the medical and spiritual support staff of St. Michael's hospital for their care and compassion, and Father Paul McCarthy of Uxbridge for his guidance and support. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 170, Uxbridge. Friends may visit at the LOW AND LOW FUNERAL HOME 23 Main Street South Uxbridge (905) 852-3073 on Sunday, March 16, 2008 from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 70 Toronto Street Uxbridge at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2008 (a date which John would no doubt have appreciated). Following the Funeral Mass, the family wel- comes you to join for a reception at The Royal Canadian Legion (109 Franklin Street Uxbridge). On-line condolences can be made at www.lowandlow.ca.
