This holiday season, Com- pound, a youth marketing com- pany, is working with Herizon House to provide kits containing everyday items to women and children ready to leave the shelter and make a fresh start. The Ajax women’s shelter accommodates around 100 women and 90 chil- dren per year, and some will make a fresh start on Jan. 1. Catherine Carney-White, executive director at Herizon House, explained the shelter gets so overcrowded they often give up counselling rooms and bring in extra cots and cribs when needed. “We will literally do whatever it takes to house a woman and her kids,” she said. Ms. Wagman said this is part of the reason Compound chose to help Herizon House. She got the idea to start the pro- gram when she helped fundraise for a women’s shelter in Toronto around Christmas one year. While she said gift donations, such as perfume, were appreciated by the women, many of them didn’t have the necessities required to make the leap from the shelter to their own home. She also noted the gov- ernment provides a start-up fee, but it’s only between $200 and $250, and it isn’t enough. “I thought, ‘we really need to fill that gap’,” she said. So, for the past five years, Com- pound has partnered with shelters across the Greater Toronto Area to help make packages, containing necessities such as shower cur- tains and mixing bowls (the most TIME FOR GINGERBREAD Photo by Jennifer Roberts PICKERING — Excited kids ages three to seven enjoyed Gingerbread Time at the Petticoat Creek Library recently. The goal is to teach the program to the people running the shelters so they can con- tinue it in the future. “(We want) to make it as easy as pos- sible for them to start over,” Ms. Wag- man said. When women and children leave an abusive relationship, many partners they have left will have either burned their belongings or given them away, Ms. Wagman explained. She said chil- dren already can’t invite their friends over when they live in the shelter, and this shouldn’t be the case when they leave. Sometimes these families won’t even have cutlery to eat with, or glasses to serve drinks. This can affect the chil- dren negatively, especially when they don’t get the “normality of stability.” We have to make sure they have the opportunity to thrive socially after this experience,” she said. Ms. Carney-White agreed, and said while the kits give women the abil- ity to provide for their families and reminds them the community cares, it also gives children a sense of nor- mality. They won’t feel the anxiety of even more losses when mothers have to decide between items like eggs and shampoo. “They can focus on getting well,” she said. “Kids don’t like to feel different.” This project can also be influential for children and teenagers, Ms. Wag- man explained. For example, if parents take their children shopping for the items, they’ll learn what mothers and children need in life and how much it costs to live. “You’re teaching community sup- port at a young age,” she said. Ms. Carney-White noted the shelter always accepts items and gift certifi- cates year round to help women start fresh. “Whatever we have is what we give to them,” she said. NEWS ADVERTISER 905-683-5110 Learn how to buy proper gifts for people with mobility issues By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com AJAX — While the gift you bought for a loved one with a physical disability in the past may have come from good intentions, it could be stuck in a cup- board somewhere, says the March of Dimes’ (MOD) manager of group develop- ment and support. “It’s always hard to know what to buy because often the regular products that are available, they may not be suitable,” Sheila Case- more said. On Tuesday, Dec. 18 staff from MOD Canada, a non-profit organization that offers programs and services for people with physical disabilities, will be at Ajax Shoppers Home Health Care for its grand opening. The store provides specialty home health care products and services, and MOD consultants will be on hand to recommend proper gifts for people with physi- cal disabilities or mobility issues. Specifically, items recommended will enhance mobility and increase safe- ty and independence for people recovering from a stroke. “There’s 50,000 new strokes per year and there’s about 300,000 people in Canada living with the af- fects of stroke, so it’s quite substantial,” Ms. Casemore said. Ideal items for stroke sur- vivors would be “anything that’s anti-slip,” including bathtub mats, devices for plates, knives and forks or fold-up bath chairs that are portable and convenient for travelling. But, people with any mo- bility issue are welcome to attend and ask about prod- ucts that may help them. “In terms of the barri- ers, it’s really difficult to find these products,” Ms. Casemore said. “I mean they’re not often commer- cially available.” She added modifying products can be risky since they haven’t been properly tested, so it’s important to go to specialty stores because the products are properly tested and de- signed for people with mo- bility issues. MOD is also reminding people to buy gifts for care- givers this season. Ms. Case- more said it can be difficult for caregivers (often fam- ily members) to find time for themselves, many times working 24-hour days. “Caregivers are always forgotten, we find,” she said. For more information on MOD, or to make a donation to Stroke Recovery Canada (an MOD program), call 1- 800-263-3463 or visit www. marchofdimes.ca. The event is from 2 to 4 p.m. at 260 Kingston Rd. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, December 16, 2007 PAGE 3 A/Pdurhamregion.com March of Dimes offers suitable gift ideas By Fran Zingone fzingone@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Provincial Finance Minister Dwight Duncan addressed trans- portation funding concerns for Ontario in his economic update Thursday, but left much unsaid. According to Regional Chairman Roger Anderson, who is also commission- er of the Durham Region Transit Commission, the announcement repeated what was announced last August. “We need less announce- ments and more money to flow,” said Mr. Anderson. “Hopefully, the minister will make a more significant announcement early in the new year,” he said. Mr. Duncan included new commitments to invest $300 million into municipal in- frastructure for local roads, bridges and water systems. While the announcement listed a number of money- saving benefits, Mr. Ander- son doesn’t see any extra money going into the 905 or 416 areas. The finance min- ister also announced $1.1 billion in business tax cuts over three years for corpo- rations involved in manu- facturing by eliminating the capital tax on Jan. 1. While the tax cut will es- sentially assist the manu- facturing industry, a retro- active 21 per cent capital- tax rate cut will also apply to all businesses. Transit announcement says nothing new: Anderson DURHAM — About 150 cancer patients at Lak- eridge Health Oshawa who desperately rely on isotopes for diagnosis and treatment will be getting relief from a worldwide shortage as soon as the end of December. Isotopes, which are pro- duced as a byproduct of nu- clear reactor operations, are almost entirely produced at the Chalk River facility in the Ottawa Valley. The reactor was shut down for maintenance in Novem- ber that caused an outcry when a lack of isotopes was available for treatments and tests. Due to the chemical’s short shelf life between six hours and two weeks, it was unable to be stock piled. Parliament held an all- night emergency session earlier this week which saw the Chalk River facility fired up earlier than expected which will lead to renewed isotope production. It’s estimated about 10,000 Ontario patients are dependent on isotopes for treatment. Lakeridge Health Oshawa has been in talks with their isotope supplier and expect to get a shipment of the ra- dioactive material during the week of Dec. 28. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Merry Christmas to all our troops They’re stuck in a war zone half-a-world away in a culture and climate that couldn’t be more different from their own. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine the thousands of brave men and women would be more than a little homesick this Christmas season. At a time of year when we all take for granted the chance to spend the holidays with loved ones, our soldiers in Afghanistan would surely like to be back here with us, enjoying the crisp cold air, the lights and gifts, the holiday meals and celebrations that make Christmas so special. But while they can’t be here, we can bring a whole lot of Christmas spirit to our troops and show them how much we care about them. That’s just what hundreds of you have done over the past two weeks by participating in our Christmas greetings for sol- diers campaign organized by Metroland Durham Region Media Group in partnership with Oshawa MP Colin Carrie. The goal was to bring a little warmth and cheer to our fighting men and women in recognition for the sacrifices they have made. And you have come through with flying colours. More than 600 greeting cards have been signed and sent off to the Department of National Defence in Ottawa where they will then go to Kandahar in time for Christmas. Touching video trib- utes were also collected from many different people. That DVD will also go to Afghanistan in time for Christmas. The seasons greeting campaign is just the latest revelation in a year-long effort by Canadians -- and especially by people in Durham and Northumberland -- to show our appreciation for our boys and girls in uniform. From ribbons on cars and trucks, to the outpouring of support for the 71 soldiers who have fallen in Afghanistan, Canadians have shown their true colours. We all felt the pain when Trooper Darryl Caswell was killed in action in June. The Bowmanville native had many friends and family who grieved his death. But there were so many others here who wanted to show the Caswells they were far from alone. And Durham’s people met the call by being there in Bowman- ville and by lining the Highway of Heroes in tribute. We wish all our troops a very safe and Merry Christmas. And we thank them for their efforts on our behalf. ‘Plot’ to get rid of airport lands houses To the editor: Re: ‘Whitevale resident wants to stay in her home’, Nov. 23 News Advertiser. No one understands ‘government as landlord’ better than those of us, like Councillor Rick Johnson, who are long-term tenants or original owners on the federal airport lands. All levels of government have a responsibility to not only meet but also exceed the standards required by private landlords – as Transport Canada discovered when it lost court cases challeng- ing its treatment of tenants on the federal lands. This neglect reflects a long-term plot to allow the houses to decay to the point where they become untenable. For decades the property managers had been operating under the radar. Po- litical parties come and go, but you can’t vote out bureaucrats. We have seen buildings neglected and bulldozed, homes that should have been maintained and rented, providing income and security on what has become the largest vacant lot in the country and continued community life in villages that were thriving at the time of expropriation. Whitevale was saved when much was sold back and the provincial government got out of the landlord business. But Transport Canada doesn’t want thriving communities on airport land: people get in the way of airports. They have for 35 years – and counting. Mary Delaney Pickering O ther than political junkies, jour- nalists and newspaper cartoonists, who benefits most by the Parlia- ment Hill testimony of Karlheinz Sch- reiber? It says here not much will come of it all. While Mr. Schreiber, a lovable scamp whose claims can be wildly entertaining, is singing like a canary before the House of Commons ethics committee, the concern is that not much new will be revealed from his testimony. Those who have been paying attention over the past dozen years or so haven’t learned all that much lately from the Ger- man native. Now a Canadian citizen, it should be remembered Mr. Schreiber, 73, is wanted in the land of his birth to face numerous charges and says he’ll sign any- thing to avoid extradition. Granted bail, he’s demanding a public inquiry into how he’s been treated by the Canadian government and justice system. And he wants the world to know he feels he’s been betrayed by his old friend, Brian Mulroney. The real worry in all this is that a feud between Mr. Schreiber and Mr. Mulroney could, if it leads to a full-blown public inquiry, cost Canadian taxpayers tens of millions of dollars. And what we would get for all that money spent is highly dubious. We know Mr. Schreiber gave Mr. Mul- roney $300,000 with the payments start- ing just after the latter left the office of prime minister. The money was supposed to be for lobbying Mr. Mulroney would do for Mr. Schreiber after his successor, Kim Campbell, would form a majority govern- ment. Oops! Didn’t happen. The Tories were thrashed in the 1993 federal election and Mr. Mulroney didn’t deliver for Mr. Schreiber. Meanwhile, there was an extremely complicated case involving commissions paid to Mr. Schreiber who helped land a $1.8-billion aircraft contract in 1988 for European company Airbus Industrie with Air Canada. Mr. Schreiber’s cut was $20 million and there was concern that some- how, Mr. Mulroney was improperly in- volved. This was never proved even after the RCMP did extensive investigations. Mr. Mulroney was paid $2.1 million in 1997 after he sued and the feds backed down. It’s all ancient history that has been dredged up for another look now. And because Mr. Schreiber wrote a number of letters requesting a public inquiry to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, it looks like the current government wants to go ahead with one so it can say it’s clean of all improper dealings. It’s probably enough to let the Com- mons committee absorb all the testimony Mr. Schreiber and Mr. Mulroney can de- liver and then decide if anything needs to be done. For those of us looking to 2008 and beyond and concerned about such current issues as child poverty, climate change and Canadian involvement in Af- ghanistan, the Schreiber-Mulroney affair is nothing more than inside baseball, Ot- tawa-style. It doesn’t merit an incredibly expensive public inquiry that will only leave us all lighter in the collective pock- etbook. Tim Kelly is a Metroland Durham Region Media Group copy editor. It was really great to see.” The Skiffingtons know all too well what it’s like to look to the commu- nity for assistance. Just one year ago, this young cou- ple didn’t know where they were going to live. Mr. Skiffington was born with cystic fibrosis, a dete- riorating lung disease, and nearly six years ago he had a double lung transplant. His condition meant the couple couldn’t live in a basement apart- ment, but they couldn’t afford any- thing else. “It was about this time last year that we got the call,” Mr. Skiffington recalls. “We found out there was a couple who wanted to help us and that they were going to put us in a house.” A couple had read about the Skiffingtons and was so touched by the story that they bought a house, which the Skiffingtons have been living in since last February. This is the first Christmas the couple will have had in a long time when they aren’t burdened with housing issues hanging over their heads. So the couple decided to give back in the best way they could think of. “We thought about how much the News Advertiser had done for us and how much the (family who helped us) had done for us,” Mr. Skiffington said. “We thought the least we could do, to show our ap- preciation, was to help out the less fortunate in this way. “When you have relied on the community before it makes you re- alize the importance of giving back,” he said. The Skiffingtons were just two of 79 people who volunteered to deliv- er Santa Fund boxes, stuffed with a hat, gloves, a sweater, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a toy and a book. Forty-eight Scouts and Girl Guides volunteered as did News Ad- vertiser employees and their friends and families. Sarah Camirand is the senior car- rier representative with the Ajax- Pickering News Advertiser. She took the helm to organize the delivery of the Santa Fund boxes this year. “I love Christmas and I don’t think anyone should miss out on Christ- mas,” she said, adding that the amount of time it takes to organize the deliveries is well worth the re- sult. “We had a total of 525 boxes to 323 homes in Ajax and Pickering,” she explained. “This was the first time we were able to reach almost every home in the first weekend.” And everyone made a tremen- dous effort, she said, including the Skiffingtons. “They did two or three trips and took quite a bit out with them each time,” she said. “We really appreci- ate everyone’s efforts; they were all phenomenal.” To donate to the Santa Claus Fund by VISA or MasterCard, call 416-869-4847 or visit www.thestar. com/santaclausfund. Cheques or money orders can be made out and delivered to The Ajax-Pickering News Advertiser Santa Claus Fund, 130 Commercial Ave., Ajax, Ontario, L1S 2H5. All donors receive an in- come tax receipt after the campaign ends in January. Before we tell you what Bootcamp is, let’s start with what it’s not. Bootcamp is not: a training camp used to disci- pline teens, militant style fi tness, punishment, yelling or wearing boots and drudging through the mud. It is overall body conditioning for adults, aiming to improve cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and core conditioning (back, abdominals and hips). Bootcamp style fi tness not only improves overall fi tness, but also has a positive impact on im- proving posture, agility, speed and balance. Your Bootcamp trainers ensure you achieve these results by having you commit to at least three days a week for four weeks, whether you are looking to kick start or kick up your fi tness routine. You will do intervals, circuit training, obstacle courses, drills, stability ball and core conditioning, sports and athletic conditioning, run- ning, power walking, improved stretching techniques and so much more. With all of this, you are sure to never get bored of your fi tness routine, thus staying committed and motivated when seeing results! If you can identify with any of the statements be- low, then Bootcamp-style fi tness is for you! 1. You want to lose weight and or inches. 2. You are at a general fi tness level and wanting to get serious about fi tness but don’t know how. 3. The reflecting pond in front of the school’s library is supposed to double as a rink. However, facilities vice-president Ralph Aprile doesn’t think it has ever been used for skating. Although it costs more to build the dual-purpose pond, Mr. Aprile said it simply costs too much to use it as a rink in the winter. “Basically we could use the money else- where rather than use tens of thousands of dollars on utilities to run the thing. We felt it would be better used in the classroom,” he said. Mr. Aprile estimates the utilities would cost about $40,000 for a winter. Students are using regional transit DURHAM — The pilot program that gets children to school on public tran- sit at a discounted rate has been extended. In June, Regional Coun- cil approved a Durham Dis- trict School Board bus pass pilot program on a three- month basis. It began in October, but Durham Region Transit’s (DRT) general manager, Ted Galinis, recommend- ed to the transit executive committee that it be ex- tended. “We need more time to make sure everything is in order before we make a full commitment,” he said. The project was extended to coincide with the con- clusion of the school year. DRT staff will evaluate the bus pass in the 2008 tran- sit servicing and financing study. If it isn’t being used, the pilot project will be cancelled. “A six-month extension will allow us to better eval- uate the program,” Mr. Gali- nis said. “But, it appears to be going very well.” The program lets the public school board pur- chase discounted, bulk rate restricted student pass- es for DRT. The Catholic school board already has a deal with DRT and pur- chases nearly 5,000 passes a month. By Jennifer Stone jstone@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Council has spurned a recommendation from Clarington staff and peer review- ers hired by the Municipality that site selection for the proposed in- cinerator be delayed, until more specific information is available. The decision amounts to tacit willingness to host the incinerator in Courtice, say opponents to the plan. But, that’s just not so, says a Clarington local councillor. “I just wanted to see the process move forward,” said local council- lor Ron Hooper, who joined forces with Clarington’s three Regional councillors to have the motion forgoing the staff and reviewer’s recommendation pass 4-3. “We’re not saying we’re not going to be an unwilling host,” said Coun. Hooper. Incinerator opponent Wendy Bracken isn’t convinced. “I’m extremely disappointed,” she said. “I cannot understand it given that the peer reviewers iden- tified fundamental flaws, especial- ly with regard to public health and safety. “It was obvious that site selec- tion cannot be separated from knowledge of vendor and technol- ogy and site-specific studies being completed,” said Ms. Bracken. “Those things have to go together for the best protection of human health.” The motion passed by Claring- ton council “without a question” says Clarington will be a willing host, said Barry Bracken, another opponent. Under the motion passed by council, the peer reviewers’ and staff comments will be adopted as Clarington’s position on the site selection process. As well, the regions of Durham and York have been asked to address issues identified by the peer reviewers and the regions have been asked to ensure the Maximum Achiev- able Control Technology for emis- sions and monitoring will be met. However, the recommendations that two sites be carried forward and that site selection also be de- layed until the business case for the incinerator is complete were dropped from the motion recom- mended by staff. A number of delegates came forward before the decision was made, to ask Clarington to declare itself an unwilling host to the pro- posed incinerator, which would burn residual waste from Durham and York. One was Dave Renaud, head of the local CAW Regional Environ- mental Council. The CAW council last weekend passed an emergen- cy resolution stating their opposi- tion to incineration. “My understanding is that (GM) has an EFW (Energy From Waste facility),” Clarington Mayor Jim Abernethy said after hearing of the resolution. The mayor also questioned Mr. Renaud on his familiarity with the emissions coming from GM. “As the environmental arm of the UAW (sic), you should be ad- dressing that,” said the mayor, who suggested eventually perhaps Dur- ham’s incinerator could replace GM’s incinerator, using a steam line to heat the plant. “You’re attacking the company that has the largest number of vot- ers in this area, and I’m not sure that’s a good thing to do,” said Mr. Renaud after the mayor ques- tioned him about GM’s emissions and use of incineration. Several delegates said they felt declaring Clarington’s unwilling- ness to host would strengthen the Municipality’s bargaining position with the Region. “It’s the biggest political card you have, and if you don’t play it soon, it’s worthless,” said Linda Gasser. 2700 Audley Rd. Panthers’ rookie back for stint with Generals By Brian McNair bmcnair@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Pickering Panthers’ forward Andy Andreoff is back for his second go-round with the Os- hawa Generals. After being summoned for six games earlier in the Ontario Hock- ey League club’s season, Andreoff was back for Thurs- day night’s 2-1 loss to Brampton Battalion. He’s ex- pected to stay through the Gener- als’ week- end games and possibly longer, with the absence of John Tavares with the Canadian junior squad. The 16-year-old Pickering resi- dent has the potential to be a star, period, according to Mark Joslin, his coach with the Pickering Panthers. Andreoff is enjoying a fine rookie campaign with the Tier 2 Panthers, with 9-12-21 numbers through the first 26 games. In fact, just two days before get- ting the call to the ‘O’ last month, Joslin took Andreoff aside and told him to keep working hard and it wouldn’t be long before he made the jump. “The kid’s come a long way in a short period of time here,” Joslin says. “His development process has just soared. I’ve put him with my top two wingers and he’s a 16-year-old kid who’s made them even better, and they’re 19- and 20-year-olds. He’s playing more physical, more confident and he’s just a pleasure to coach.” The Generals have obviously taken notice. Despite being a fifth- round pick, Andreoff is just the third player from the 2007 draft crop to dress this season -- the top two picks, Justin Shugg and David Cor- rente, being the others. Although he played primarily on the fourth line he was thrilled simply to be there. “It’s amazing playing with all these guys and in front of the big crowd here,” Andreoff said after a recent win over the Peterborough Petes. “The big rivalry against Peter- borough was a great experience.” Joslin, whose nephew Derek was captain of the Ottawa 67’s last sea- son and has since signed a three- year deal with the San Jose Sharks, says he sees the same type of deter- mination in Andreoff as he does in his relative. “I see the comparison at a young age,” he says. “Derek is incredibly focused and Andy is maturing into a young man, very focused.” Andy Andreoff Andreoff gets the call For Everyone of these Generous For Everyone of these Generous sponsors, a cudly Plush Toy Bear will sponsors, a cudly Plush Toy Bear will Be given to the Durham RegionalBe given to the Durham Regional Police Food & Toy Drive and Police Food & Toy Drive and The Denise House. The Denise House. The Hamilton tournament attracts teams from throughout North America and this year was no different. Playing the Don Mills Fly- ers in front of a packed house, the Raiders responded with a quality effort for a 4-2 win to lay claim to the championship. The Raiders beat a strong Syracuse team 2-1 in an excit- ing semifinal. The Raiders came out strong to score a 4-1 win over Rich- mond Hill in the opening con- test. The Raiders went on to beat an American team, the Monroe County Eagles, 6-2 in Game 2 and the host Hamilton team 7-0 in their third game. Josh Cammalleri led the Raiders with eight goals and three assists in the tourna- ment, following by Nico Cirone with five goals and Kevin Stiles with three goals and two as- sists. Jordan Hardie also con- tributed three goals and five assists. Cody McNabb, Noah Vandervinne, Tyler Dender and Harry Stefura also got goals in the tournament with Jack Daley, Megan Laviolette, Nick Sribny and Antonio Defilippis helping out with assists. Opposing teams also had a hard time getting past defence- men Kyle Johnston, Dennis Cimic and Tyler Munro. Goaltenders Kyle Corrigan and Jacob Gordon were strong in net, allowing only six goals against in the whole tourna- ment. Originally opened in 1965, owner Chris Papatheodorou reopened the drive-up style joint about four years ago, and is proud to be continuing his father Ted’s tradition of offering delicious original recipe homemade hamburgers, their famous steak on a kaiser, homemade onion rings, french fries, and thick milkshakes — all in the fun and original 60s drive-in environment. “We pride ourselves on our great 40-year traditions serving the Bay Ridges area, which is why we’ve gone back the restaurant’s original feel,” he says. “Back then, The Big M was the place to go, and we’re inviting our original customers as well as a new generation of customers to come down and check us out. We offer high quality food and a good time — plus, you can’t get a better burger or steak on a kaiser anywhere else.” The Big M is back! Trent, UOIT students meet in virtual classroom By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Graduate students Jayme Stabler and Tim Teatro are in the same Materials Science program, the same first-year course and they both pay the same careful attention to their professor’s review before their exam. The only difference is Ms. Stabler is sitting in a classroom in Peterborough and Mr. Teatro is in Oshawa. Trent University and UOIT can offer joint courses because of AccessGrid, a technology that allows for real-time audio and video feeds and shared pre- sentations and data files. As a result, the two schools have created a brand new graduate masters program in Materi- als Science, which neither would have been able to do on their own. “One of the big advantages is you have a much greater selection of cours- es and experts who teach those cours- es,” said Dr. Brad Easton, a chemistry professor at UOIT, who’s been teaching a course using the technology this se- mester along with Dr. Andrew Vreug- denhil from Trent. A row of three black screens line the classroom at UOIT, showing video of the professor, students in both classes, and the professor’s slide presentation. In fact, the professor can scrawl a chart on his tablet in Oshawa and ask a stu- dent in Peterborough to complete it. “If Jayme is confused by a particular topic, I can actually see the expression on her face,” said Dr. Easton. All the students, including Ms. Sta- bler, say the course works just like a normal lecture. “It’s convenient to study this way be- cause you don’t spend time and money commuting anywhere. Nothing chang- es,” said UOIT student Alexi Shkarupin. Dr. William Smith, UOIT’s dean of science, calls AccessGrid a fun add-on to an existing super-computing net- work called SHARCNET. Linking high- performance computers at 16 Ontario academic institutions, SHARCNET is funded by federal research grants. Although the equipment for the Ac- cessGrid program cost about $20,000 to $30,000, it’s also covered by research grants as it’s being used by graduate students. All UOIT had to pay was the cost of renovating the room. UOIT faculty and research teams also use AccessGrid to conduct meetings with colleagues around the world. “It’s collaboration and leveraging the equipment we have to do things in an efficient way,” said Dr. Smith. Future partnerships with multiple universities working together to offer specialized courses are also a possibil- ity. One year of living our lives without you But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartaches, When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent the tears that fall Living each day without you, Is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us Your heart was kind and true, And when we needed someone We could always count on you. Those treasured years will not return When we were all together, But with your love within our hearts You will walk with us forever "In our hearts and lives throughout eternity" With lots of love from your loving wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and there families ARE YOU STILL LOOKING for that special someone? But, it turns out the Province is interested in what they have to say and last week an education offi- cer met with Marie Bekessy’s col- lege English class at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School. “You took initiative and wrote letters, our response is wanting to hear more,” said Jean Courtney, who works in the Student Success/ Learning to 18 division of the min- istry. A 2004 report found only 68 per cent of students were obtaining their diplomas after five years of high school. Since then, the pro- vincial government has introduced a number of programs aimed at improving graduation rates and, in 2006, raised the compulsory atten- dance age from 16 to 18. The goal is a graduation rate of 85 per cent by 2010-11. “We want to keep students in school longer and engaged and earning their diplomas because we know that will support them their whole lives,” said Ms. Courtney. The students had a variety of sug- gestions, including more hands-on programs, more sports options and more flexible scheduling for class- es. “I think they should have five minutes taken off every period to have a longer lunch,” said Jordan Da Rosa, who thinks the school’s 40-minute lunches don’t give stu- dents enough time to unwind. Several students said they’d like to see later start times in the morn- ing. Trisha Godfrey thinks courses should be more tailored for specific careers. “I know people who have cours- es like history and geography. Why take them if they want to be a me- chanic? It just adds stress.” When addressing each issue, Ms. Courtney mentioned which stu- dent had raised it. James Dean said he liked that. “I was surprised to hear my name when she was talking,” he said. Ms. Courtney also talked about some of the programs the govern- ment had implemented to improve student success, including transi- tion activities for Grade 9s entering high school and the Specialist High Skills Majors. While Pereyma offers the trans- portation major, the students said they want to see more. “As we get bigger, you’ll see there will be more opportunities in dif- ferent sectors,” she said. The school also offers carpentry under the Ontario Youth Appren- ticeship Program. And students themselves can help their peers succeed by doing things like welcoming new students who transfer to the school, said Ms. Courtney. Overall, the students were satis- fied with the discussion. “It was interesting, I didn’t think they’d write back to us and come to our class and talk,” said Chelsea Veroba. Reka Szekely/ News Advertiser photo On Dec. 6, Monsignor John Pereyma students offered the Ministry of Education advice on keeping kids in school. Grade 11 students Chelsea Veroba, Dylan Waybrant and Michelle Smith picked up brochures on Student Success programs from ministry education officer Jean Courtney, who carefully noted the students’ opinions.
