Page 8 Housing and families among reasons more immigrants are calling Region their home By Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The big city has tra- ditionally been where immigrants to Canada head when arriving. Toronto, Montreal and Vancou- ver weren’t just the places where immigrants landed, but also where they stayed. That’s changing as more and more newcomers are skipping the city and heading to the suburbs. Canadian census data from 2006 released this week in- dicates 905-region municipalities are becoming the first destination of choice. In Ajax, for example, the foreign-born population increased by more than 40 per cent. Mohammad Sohail came to Can- ada three years ago from Afghani- stan. A year earlier, his wife Sorraya came to Canada and stayed with her brother in Oshawa. After he joined her, the Sohails stayed in Oshawa for a time, but now live in Whitby. If anything, Hemrajh Ramp- ersad has started his life in Canada in reverse. The 39 year-old came from Trinidad in September, set- tling with a brother in Whitby. He also has siblings in Ajax and Scar- borough. Following a stay in Whitby, Mr. Rampersad has moved into Scar- borough, as it’s “close to job op- portunities.” He first stayed in Whitby because “at the time, I didn’t know my way around. I didn’t know anybody but them,” Mr. Rampersad says. “I stayed with him for a month or so until I learned my way around. Scarborough has more happening here in terms of job opportunity.” Mr. Rampersad has an MBA in marketing and is looking for work. He has been sending out applica- tions and this week had a tele- phone interview with a company and is waiting for follow-up con- tact. “A lot of immigrants don’t mind coming up here and getting a job that’s not up to their qualifications or experience,” he says. A community garden is a place where people come together to grow vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. Growers can grow crops together or have their own plots. Did you also know that there are 92 student nutrition programs in Durham Region that provide breakfast, snack or lunch in schools to ensure all children in Durham attend school well nourished and ready to learn? Durham Region Health Department and Durham Lives! have undertaken a number of initiatives to work towards ensuring that Durham Region residents of all ages will have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious and personally acceptable food. Durham Lives! has also collaborated with Durham Region Social Services Department, Durham's Child Nutrition Project, Rose of Durham, Durham Region Community Garden Network, Feed the Need, Durham Region Community Advisors, Food 4 Thought, Helping Hands-Where Community Concerns Matter and Girls Incorporated of Durham on a number of food-related issues. For the past year, a task force of community partners has been developing a draft Food Charter which speaks to the right to food, agriculture and the politics of food. It is their intention that this will eventually lead to a Food Charter being adopted by Durham Region. All these efforts are making the healthy choice the easy choice. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, December 7, 2007 PAGE 3 A/Pdurhamregion.com Residents show opposition at hearing By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Enough is enough, says a founding member of the Bayshore Neigh- bour’s Association. “We, the residents of Bayshore Tow- ers, want to see the (Bay Ridges) plaza redeveloped, but we are aghast at what is being done to our neighbourhood under the guise of growth and development,” Hazel Daubeny said. Ms. Daubeny spoke at an Ontario Mu- nicipal Board hearing in regard to the addition of more units to one of the future apartment buildings in the new develop- ment, San Francisco by the Bay. In August, the Committee of Adjust- ment rejected SR and R Bay Ridges Ltd.’s application to permit 497 dwelling units for its mixed-use commercial/residential development. The zoning bylaw permits only 473. On Thursday, Dec. 6, SR and R, repre- sented by William Friedman, appealed the committee’s decision to the Ontario Municipal Board. Mr. Friedman argued the additional 24 units would be an “insignificant increase.” He said they’ll increase affordability since they’re small. He called a long-time professional plan- ner, Stephen Fagyas, as a witness. Mr. Fagyas said the application coincides with the general intent of the Pickering Official Plan. He said there is no change in either the height or the gross floor area. The only alteration would be the num- ber of units; additional ones would only be smaller. Mr. Friedman asked him about the traf- fic study conducted in the summer, noting that the report states the addition would only cause an additional trip each quarter of an hour. “It has some impact but it’s so minute it’s not measurable,” Mr. Fagyas said. He also said no additional parking spaces would be needed. The traffic study should not have been conducted in the summer, when people were on vacation, said Ms. Daubeny. She added the association does not want more traffic and more congestion “on the streets and intersections that can barely handle current levels of use. “In case of emergency, how would any- body get out of Bay Ridges?” she said. Ms. Daubeny also said if the developer was unhappy with the committee’s deci- sion “the proper procedure would be to apply for an amendment to the Official Plan of the City of Pickering, not attempt to bypass the process.” Andrew Allison, representing the City of Pickering, said the City is in favour of the application. OMB board member Chris Conti said a decision will be made at a future date. Mr. Rampersad doesn’t have a wife or children and was helped by having family already here. Those who don’t have a family “have to find a place to live, pay rent, get the children in school. I can see their frus- tration.” Mr. Sohail is an accountant by train- ing, working at the time he left an in- ternational NGO (non-governmental organization). He tried to find account- ing positions when he came to Canada but “they were looking for Canadian education and Canadian experience, which I didn’t have.” Mr. Sohail also didn’t have time to get his Canadian credentials because “I had to support my family and improve my English and it wasn’t at all pos- sible.” He and his wife have three daughters -- Aryan, 4, Noorin, 3, and Michelle, 18 months. He says there is frustration. “It’s more than frustrating, because when you come here and have the skills and think you can apply those skills and you end up working in a gas station and a convenience store.” For the past five months, he’s worked as an immigrant settlement worker with the Community Development Council Durham (CDCD). Prior to that he worked at a gas station and conve- nience store in Oshawa. “It was practically eight days a week,” he says, pointing to working double shifts each day. By the time he had paid rent, there wasn’t “extra money to pay for tuition. You work long hours and get tired and you can’t study then.” When Mr. Sohail speaks to newcom- ers, he says it’s a “tough challenge. “They have to be persistent because it’s not easy,” says Mr. Sohail. “They have to try very, very hard to be able to get a job in their own field. “It’s very difficult. I encourage the government to provide them with more support, particularly housing,” Mr. So- hail says. Tracey Vaughan, the executive direc- tor of the CDCD, says the agency has seen the trend in the past of immigrants skipping the big city and heading for the suburbs. The Region is also the home of the “second wave” of immigrants: those who settled in Toronto and are now moving out to the suburbs. “Housing is much more affordable. A lot don’t like the area where they settled in Toronto. “They’re looking for an area that’s good to raise a family in,” Ms. Vaughan says. “Ajax is still close to Toronto.” The CDCD provides support to newcomers and is seeing about 160 new clients each month. “We’re in a really good point to assess the trends in Durham Region,” she says, adding “Ajax is a huge growth centre.” People are coming to the area because they have friends or family living here. “Obviously, they’re looking to settle where there are people to help them along with settling.” Second wave immigrants come to the area because they can “afford to buy a home. They don’t have to live in an apartment. Toronto is so cost prohibitive. This area is much more at- tractive.” Nominations are now being accepted for the Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards The strength of our community lies in solid citizens. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com LETTER TO THE EDITOR Transit tweaks a necessary evil Still, a shame when public transit service has to be reduced N obody enjoys waiting for a bus, especially in the dead of winter. But that’s what many more com- muters will be doing as Durham Region Transit tweaks many of its routes due to a lack of ridership. The reductions in service will be rolled out in January with more to follow in March and July. As DRT Deputy General Manager Phil Meagher put it, you either use it or lose it. This shouldn’t come as surprise to a lot of residents. After all, who hasn’t seen a bus go by with few if any people on it. But those empty buses have left DRT facing a $2.3 million deficit. While we agree tweaks have to be made in the system, it’s disappointing whenever any service has to be scaled back, especially in public transportation. After all, public transportation is something experts tout as being good for the environment, helping ease traffic congestion. And who wouldn’t want to see those areas improved? Another concern we have when it comes to scaling back routes is the ripple effect it may have on ridership. If DRT users do not find it convenient. they may just forgo using public transportation altogether. So far, route frequency changes are being made in Pick- ering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa, four of the most highly populated areas in Durham Region. Routes throughout Clarington and north Durham re- main unchanged but there aren’t as many there to begin with. The only impacts riders will have to consider com- ing from those two areas will be the changes to the rest of the system if they happen to be travelling westward. The DRT was launched in January 2006, amalgamating Durham Region’s former transit systems into one. Back then it was said to be necessary, something that would allow more riders to conveniently bus anywhere and ev- erywhere in Durham Region. Two years into operation, ridership is not where of- ficials want it to be but Mr. Meagher says this is simply a growing pain. The transit strike in October 2006 also didn’t help. We hope these cutbacks in some service areas are short-term pain for long-term gain because too much work, effort and money have gone into the DRT system. It needs to succeed to keep Durham moving forward. Give transit time to prove itself DRT committed to top-notch system The other day, while driving down Harwood Avenue in Ajax, I saw a woman take a mean tumble. She was trying to get over a snow bank and into the bus shelter in front of the hos- pital. She got up and brushed herself off, so I am assuming she was OK, but I decid- ed the people at Durham Region Transit (DRT) would want to know about the hazard. I got word to deputy general manager Phil Meagher, who immediately called me on my cell phone to find out the details of what I had seen. Someone had already been dispatched to the scene to clear the snow bank and hopefully prevent further falls. When we see headlines in the paper that Durham Region Transit is facing a $2.3-million deficit, routes are being cut back and free charters cancelled, one might be inclined to think the regional transit system is failing. But, that isn’t the case. The men at the helm of Durham Region Transit eat, sleep and breathe public transportation. Com- bined, Mr. Meagher and general man- ager Ted Galinis have spent 77 years in the field. They didn’t start off working in transit. Mr. Meagher began as a trades- person and Mr. Galinis was a mechanic. Their paths led them to transit and both grew to care immensely about it. “Transit is about getting people where they need to go in a timely fashion,” Mr. Meagher told me, and I’d say that is a pretty important job. The people at DRT, from the top on down, truly want what is best for the sys- tem and the people who use it. But DRT has been faced with a chal- lenging situation making the best with what they have. The Region was led to believe it would get funding, like the funding given to places such as York Region, from higher levels of government. Several applications have been made to the Province and the feder- al government. To date it has received $10 million for new vehicles and some money to study a bus rapid transit system. Funding from the upper levels of gov- ernment would have helped smooth some of the transitional costs, but it didn’t come, so now DRT is facing some chal- lenges. The tax credit on bus passes has resulted in a revenue shortfall, and rider- ship is down following the strike in Octo- ber 2006. I am sure it’s hard to withdraw service, but if they aren’t operating well, business decisions are made to optimize service. Route cuts and budget tweaking are all necessary to get the system working in the most efficient and effective way. A grid system is in the works, which will make for more consistent service. There is good down the road. It may be taking a little longer than an- ticipated, but there are committed people working on it and a first-class transit sys- tem is on its way. The Whitby Fire Department demon- strated a live burn of a Christmas tree on Tuesday to educate residents on the importance of buying fresh trees. “You should touch the needles and make sure they don’t fall off,” explained Fire Prevention Officer, Janice Laswick. “If they are brittle, the tree is too old, and we wouldn’t recommend that you purchase it.” The fire in the mock liv- ing room started out small, but within a minute it spread from the Christmas tree to the nearby couch before engulfing the entire room in flames. Fire Captain Dave Fleming said because the fire starts slowly, people make the mistake of trying to extinguish it them- selves. “They lose valuable time trying to put out the fire, rather than calling us (fire department) right away,” he said. Ms. Laswick said trees shouldn’t be kept in the house for longer than 10 to 12 days. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, December 7, 2007 PAGE 9 A/Pdurhamregion.com DURHAM — Pickering trustee Jim McCaf- ferty will once again helm Durham’s Catholic school board as chairman. He was elected to the position by fellow trustees on Dec. 3 at the board’s inaugural meeting for 2008. Trustee McCafferty has been a trustee for 16 years and previously served as chairman in 1998. He replaces Whitby’s Mary Ann Martin, who’s held the position since 2002. “I look forward to working with trustees and staff to continue to make Durham Catholic a great place for all students,” said Trustee Mc- Cafferty in a statement. Ajax trustee Janice Oldman will serve as vice-chairwoman of the board. This will be her first time in that role. The local politician said this could help North American manufacturers like General Motors, by allowing con- sumers to easily identify the country of origin of vehicles and their parts, and make informed decisions about buying domestic. “I’ve talked to people who believe they are supporting the North American auto industry with that they’re buying, and they’re amazed to learn most of it or all of it was made outside North America,” Mr. Ouellette says. “I think this will really support the workers on the line in the auto sector.” The same bill was before the legis- lature last year, but died on the order paper when Premier Dalton McGuinty recessed early in June and prorogued the session of parliament. Mr. Ouellette believes the bill will have better luck this time around, say- ing many cabinet ministers have voiced their support. The bill passed first read- ing in the legislature on Wednesday. If passed, it will take effect in 2010 for all automotive advertising. Ouellette wants car parts labelled Covering Durham’s education situation rszekely@durhamregion.comREPORTER REKA SZEKELYnewsdurhamregion.com Just one more way to get your news thanks to your friends at the Metroland Durham Region Media Group By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — An Oshawa con- venience store clerk is in hospital with stab wounds sustained in what police said was a brutal and unpro- voked attack Tuesday evening. The 46-year-old clerk was stabbed in the arm and chest by a man who walked into the Best Variety store at 100 Nonquon Rd. around 8:30 p.m., said store owner Bashir Ahmad. He said the clerk, who’d worked at the store for about two years, survived the attack by leaping over the coun- ter, rushing outside and holding the door shut as his assailant tried to get out. Blood spattered the pavement and snow outside the shop where the clerk fled during the attack. The victim held the door shut and called for help until a passerby called po- lice. Mr. Ahmad said the assailant ap- peared to make no demands before attacking the clerk. “The guy came in and straight away he ran to (the clerk) with a knife and attacked him here be- hind the cash,” Mr. Ahmad said as he stood behind the store counter Wednesday morning. The attacker carried a plastic shopping bag and tried to scoop up cigarettes before grabbing the cash register and repeatedly smashing it in an attempt to get at the money inside, Mr. Ahmad said, speculating the incident was fuelled by drugs. The assailant fled out a back door, he said. Police said the incident was caught on security video. Cops are seeking a white man with a thin build who stands about 5-feet-8. “This is one of the most dangerous robbers and most violent robberies I have ever seen. He comes in there with a knife and he’s prepared to use it. The victim narrowly escaped with his life,” said Sergeant Paul Mc- Curbin. ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS AND EMERGENCIES BROCK NORTH DENTAL durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 18 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, December 7, 2007 Time for businesses to go green New pilot program offers ways for businesses to save energy and reduce costs By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Dr. Brian Warshafsky of Sheridan Dental Centre doesn’t only want to save the environment by retro- fitting the office with energy-efficient lighting, he also hopes to save money. “We’ve been actively looking for quite a few years on how to save en- ergy,” he said. So, he asked Durham Sustain Ability for help. Last year, DSA launched We Have the Power, a program asking resi- dents to take simple actions to reduce energy consumption. DSA executive director, Jack McGinnis, said the re- sults were impressive, so when it ap- plied for a new grant from the Ministry of Energy’s Community Conservation Initiatives, it received $38,000. “They were pretty happy when we applied and said we wanted to expand it into business,” Mr. McGinnis said. DSA is compiling a list of incen- tive programs available to Ajax and Pickering businesses to reduce en- ergy, such as Veridian’s ERIP incen- tives for electricity-saving retrofits. The program will also point businesses in the right direction to make changes in their offices. Mr. McGinnis said he hopes those involved will motivate others since “one business will listen to another business in a big hurry.” Dr. Warshafsky explained Sheridan uses a lot of equipment, and runs the air conditioning year-round since ma- chines create a lot of heat. The office wants to reduce energy in other ways, and after a long search, DSA pointed Dr. Warshafsky to Enerlights, special- izing in energy-efficient lighting prod- ucts, and soon it will be retrofitted with new low-efficient lighting. “(DSA has) been helpful in intro- ducing us to the right people who can make the assessments for us,” he said. Dr. Warshafsky is looking forward to getting his hydro bill in January and hopes to share the results with other businesses, because if he does save, “I can’t imagine why anybody else wouldn’t want to do it.” He said he’ll be happy even with a small decrease since it all adds up. Plus he said “the reason we’re doing it is primarily for the environmental aspect of it.” Mr. McGinnis said now is the time to make an investment similar to Sher- idan’s since energy costs are only in- creasing, and there are a number of incentive programs available. Colleges Ontario, made up of 24 colleges including Durham, is commissioning the most comprehensive study ever conducted into the attitudes of high school students. One third of Ontarians aged 25 to 34 have a high school diploma or less, states the or- ganization. College Ontario is contributing $65,000 towards the $250,000 study to be con- ducted by researchers at Queen’s University. “This is an area colleges in general have been very, very interested in. These research- ers at Queen’s have done a lot of work on high school students and the kinds of decisions they make,” said Durham College president Leah Myers. Statistics show some of the factors influ- encing post-secondary participation. “We know the number of students that don’t go on to post-secondary education and we know it has something to do with the education of their parents,” said Ms. Myers. “We also know students from lower-income families are less likely to go on.” However, the study will take a more in- depth approach, including interviews with high school students. The colleges hope the resulting information will help them increase enrolment. Ms. Myers said there’s a particular need for workers in the skilled trades. By 2025, Ontario will have a shortage of 360,000 skilled em- ployees. “Durham College is really well-po- sitioned with our program, particularly with the Skills Training Centre in Whitby, to help fill the gap,” said Ms. Myers. Christie Collins and Ryan Carr are both second-year students at Durham’s Whitby campus. They’re studying to be automotive technicians, a field where there’s expected to be a shortage. Mr. Carr took a year off after high school and worked in an auto shop before starting college. “I always liked the skilled trades and I know from when I was pretty young that my apti- tude was with hands-on work as opposed to sitting behind a desk,” said Mr. Carr. Ms. Collins said most people in her family have attended college. She said there’s incen- tives to choosing the trades. “There’s a lot of bursaries and scholarships just for going into the trades.” And there’s long-term incentives as well. “The kind of job you can get, the kind of in- come you can have, the quality of life you can have is tremendously affected by the decision to come to college,” said Ms. Myers. Walter Passarella/ News Advertiser photo Instructor John Nixon assists Curtis Chapman and Tyler Clarke with lab work. The students are enrolled in the eight-week dual credit in electronic igni- tion, fuel and emissions course at the Durham College Skills Training Centre. What are high school students thinking? He was the first of his friends to buy a high definition (HD) LCD TV and subscribe to digital cable to access HD television programming. “The picture and sound quality are out of this world,” said Michael. “You can see every blade of grass or every bead of sweat on a hockey player. It’s as though you’re right in the action.” Michael may be ahead of his friends, but Canadians are catching up. A recent survey indicates that more than 24 per cent of Canadian households own high definition TVs and that number is ex- pected to grow by 36 per cent by spring 2008. This holiday season many Canadians will take the HD experience further by acquiring HD DVD players. This new home entertainment format allows HD enthusiasts to watch movies they rent and purchase in the same HD format. When played on an HD DVD player and an HD TV, the sound and picture is as crisp and clear as technologically possible. “HD DVD players take movies to an- other level,” says Dave Vitale, Toshiba’s HD DVD product manager. “This format High definition home entertainment for the holidays Advertising Feature offers top of the line picture and sound. It also lets users interact with their content like never before, HD DVD technology is changing the way people experience movies at home.” The newest line of HD DVD players available to Canadians offer 1080p res- olution - the highest HD Signal currently available. There is a variety of models available starting at $349. Toshiba is offering compelling holiday promotions that include packaging HD DVD movies right in the box and letting consumers choose an additional 5 mov- ies by mail with the purchase of any HD DVD device. Research shows that consumers are adopting high definition viewing and HD DVD as their preferred home entertain- ment experience. Here are some reasons why HD DVD home entertainment offers a great viewing experience: Picture Performance HD DVD players deliver amazing picture and sound quality with HD DVD movies and also make standard DVD movies look their best on HD TVs giving con- sumers near-HD performance. Interactivity HD DVD movies offer consumers new ways to in- teract with movies. Select titles allow viewers to watch and listen to the filmmakers’ com- mentary while the movie is playing. It’s also possible to customize the action, play interactive games and find out more about favorite actors while the movie’s playing. Toshiba’s HD DVD technology delivers a movie experience that’s be- yond the norm. Ethernet Port Every Toshiba HD DVD player features an Ethernet port so that the player can be updated to support new features and ser- vices as they become available. Features may include disc-related online shopping and other possibilities that have yet to be imagined. Resolution HD DVD discs deliver up to six times the picture performance of DVD discs, mak- ing HD DVD players the perfect match for today’s HD TVs. Combo Format The HD DVD combo format offers select releases with both the High Definition and Standard Definition versions of the film on the same disc. This means con- sumers can play the High Definition ver- sion of the film on their HD DVD player, and still enjoy that same movie on any other DVD player. Third generation HD DVD players offer exceptional picture clarity, colour quality, resolution and sound that perfectly match the enhanced resolution that the best HDTV’s can display. Identity of shooter key issue in trial By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The Crown has concluded its case against a man accused of gunning down Eugene “Dwayne” Moses at a Durham Col- lege campus pub more than three years ago. Since the trial of Neven Belic began in earnest in early Novem- ber, jurors have listened to the tes- timony of numerous prosecution witnesses, some of whom claimed to have dim memories of the fateful hours before and after the 21-year- old Mr. Moses, a graduate of Dur- ham, was shot in the chest while visiting with friends at the pub on April 3, 2004. As is the case in most murder tri- als, identity is the key issue. It is the contention of the prosecution, pre- sented by Durham Crown Attorney John Scott and Assistant Crown At- torney Heather Bayley, that it was Mr. Belic who pulled a gun and fired the shots during a disagree- ment among two groups of young people that began with bumps on a dance floor and quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation. Mr. Belic is charged with sec- ond-degree murder in the killing of Mr. Moses and two counts of aggravated assault in the wounding of two other young men who were struck by bullets. Both of the men wounded that night have testified at this trial. One, a former college student who was working security at the pub that night, testified at length about watching the confrontation be- tween several young men brewing, then erupting into gunfire. The other, who was found bleed- ing in a rented limousine pulled over by police shortly after the shooting, told Mr. Scott he couldn’t remember where he’d been the night he was shot, how he got there, or who he was with. Another young man who was in that limo also claimed memory loss on the stand, even though he had given Durham homicide investiga- tors extensive statements in 2004 describing how he met up with Mr. Belic in Scarborough hours before the shooting, and that the man he knew as Skids had shown off a handgun, declaring, “This is what I’m walking with today.” Jurors have heard Mr. Belic and several other men piled into the flashy rented SUV limo looking for a good time and, after hearing a promotion for a live-to-air broad- cast on a local hip hop station, de- cided to head to Durham College in Oshawa. Witnesses have said they saw a group emerge from the limo in Os- hawa, led by a charismatic young man wearing a basketball jersey who claimed to be a rap star from Buffalo. Several young people who were at the pub described a group of young men, including one wearing the basketball jersey, walking into the E.P. Taylor’s pub, deliberately bumping into people including Mr. Moses. They’ve described tensions escalating between two groups be- fore the shots were fired. But no one was able to say they saw the accused man with a gun in the pub, or that they saw who actu- ally fired the shots. DURHAM — General Motors truck plant workers will be get- ting an unexpected extended holiday break as the auto giant announced a two-week layoff. Due to the declining demand in the U.S. for the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado, GM has already laid off its third shift in the usually more successful Os- hawa plant. The company is using the two- week layoff in the first two weeks of January to adjust the truck inventory and deal with slower sales. Building about 440 trucks per shift, the layoff will reduce the number of trucks produced by 8,800. “It’s not a good way to start off the new year,” said Chris Buck- ley, president of Canadian Auto Workers Local 222. As North American sales have drastically dropped, GM has al- ready announced they will be reducing their production by 113,000 vehicles during the first quarter of the year. “We have all the trophies on the shelf, but our auto industry is in trouble,” said Mr. Buckley. He is referring to the Silverado’s recent win of Best New Pickup Truck earlier this week. Despite GM’s award winning trucks and cars, Mr. Buckley blames the high Canadian dollar and Canadian trade agreements for some of the problems facing the auto manufacturing indus- try. The company’s latest layoffs will affect about 2,700 workers on the remaining two shifts. Those laid off will only receive 65 per cent of their wages from federal Employment Insurance and the company employment benefits. Not only will Oshawa GM work- ers be affected by this layoff, but the company will also be cutting output in plants in Michigan and Indiana. The growing list of lay- offs continues to grow for all of the parts feeding factories across the continent affected by GM’s slow sales as well. Although there was little po- litical participation in the event, George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care for Ontario, made a point of stop- ping by while touring with Ajax/ Pickering MPP Joe Dickson on Nov. 27. “We always have to focus our ef- forts to stop the spread,” Mr. Smi- therman said. “That is best done at the community level.” The last time he was with AIDS Durham he said he made some commitments and progress has been made. “But we will continue to work,” he said. “There is always more to be done.” Mr. Richtig said Mr. Smither- man is a rare breed in a politi- cian. “You actually keep your prom- ises,” Mr. Richtig said to Mr. Smi- therman. “I wish you could work in collaboration with the federal government because the federal strategy is a mess.” Mr. Richtig said the AIDS com- munity was promised $1.6 million by the federal government, but only $600,000 was handed out. “In April 2005 we were chroni- cally under-funded,” Mr. Richtig said. “We got very little money, but in the past two-and-a-half years Mr. Smitherman has more than doubled our funding.” AIDS Durham Region needs about $200,000 a year to operate, much of which is gained through fundraising, community support and faith-based funding. It has re- ceived no federal funding in seven years, Mr. Richtig said. “They cancelled the harm re- duction program, they cancelled the safer tattooing in prisons,” he explained. “All that is left is polic- ing and punishing. There is no humanity to it any more.” He claims AIDS Durham is non- political, but there is support from the provincial level. That point was not lost on Mr. Smitherman and according to Mr. Richtig, within two days of visit- ing the conference Mr. Smither- man had written a letter to Tony Clement, the federal Minister of Health. “It is unfortunate none of our provincial or federal members of parliament were in attendance,” Mr. Richtig said. “No one from the Region and none of the mayors.” Only two local politicians at- tended- Clarington Ward 3 Councillor Willie Woo and Ajax MPP Joe Dickson. The conference, which boasted a packed schedule of events and seminars, was held at the Carruthers Creek Golf Cen- tre in Ajax from Nov. 27 to 29. “For the size of our agency we put together a very comprehen- sive program with international presenters,” Mr. Richtig said. “We are disappointed the Region doesn’t see this as a contribution to the health and well-being of the people in the region.” Dental Care for Adults, Kids and Great Big Babies. • A Full Range of Dental Treatments - Bring the whole family. • Saturday & Evening Appointments - To serve you better. • Flexible Payment Options - Helping you get the treatment you want. • A Relaxing Atmosphere - Virtual vision glasses, stereo headphones to help ensure you have a pleasant visit. Bob Leahy has heard them all and he doesn’t like the phrases. “The safest label for us is peo- ple living with HIV/AIDS (PHA),” Mr. Leahy said. He was diagnosed with HIV in 1993. “Before that I was a banker, which happens to be the most boring profession in the world,” he said. “So that was my iden- tity.” He explained that upon diag- nosis, he morphed from a banker into a gay banker with HIV. Identity, and how to become more than just a patient, was the topic of a seminar Mr. Leahy, from the Canadian AIDS Soci- ety, and Bill Merryweather, with the HIV/AIDS Legal Clinic of On- tario, gave during a recent AIDS conference. The AIDS Committee of Dur- ham Region hosted the 2007 Dur- ham Regional HIV/AIDS Con- ference: Engaging Communities from Nov. 27 to 29. The confer- ence, which boasted a packed schedule of events and seminars, was held at the Carruthers Creek Golf Centre in Ajax. The men were encouraging participants, made up of PHA, and people who work for non- profit agencies and AIDS ser- vices, to get involved with AIDS organizations to give themselves a voice. By showing the value of their lived experience, PHA can strengthen the movement and enable themselves, Mr. Merry- weather said. “We have to break down bar- riers,” he said. “We don’t want to be seen as an interest group, we don’t want to be marginal- ized and we don’t want to be dismissed.” Once at the table, Mr. Merry- weather said they need to edu- cate other PHAs and bring them along. Here are some pointers for taking care of it: • Store the tree outside or on a cool patio or porch until you are ready to set it up and decorate. A spot out of the wind and sun will help the tree keep its moisture. • If you plan to keep it for several days, make a straight cut, about an inch from the original cut, on the tree trunk. This allows the tree to take up water. Keep the tree upright and in a container of water. • When it’s time to decorate your tree, repeat the last step by cutting the trunk one inch from the last cut. Put your tree in a stand with a lot of water. • Trees drink a lot of water, about 4 litres a day. Remember to check the water container for your tree daily. If the water level drops past the trunk, a seal will form and another cut will be needed. • Keep the tree away from radiators, fireplaces, televisions and other sources of heat. Do not for- get to turn off the tree lights before you go to bed. • Combustible decorations should be avoid- ed. All connections and electric lights should be checked. Lights with frayed or worn cords are not usable. Lighted candles are not to be used on a Christmas tree. Follow these instructions and your tree will stay alive and healthy for two to three weeks. Their motivation? Rehearsals for the Randolph Young Company (RYC) produc- tion of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’. The St. Mary Catholic Secondary School students have travelled up to three times a week for the last 10 weeks to prepare for their roles. They use their travel time to warm up for the intense singing, dancing, and acting rehearsals. Di Rosa is an RYC veteran, having ap- peared in ‘Disney’s High School Musical’. “I came back because it’s a great place to grow as a performer, and have fun with people who share my interests,” he says. “To be a competitive performer, I know I have to build my dancing, singing, and acting skills— be a triple threat— and RYC is a great place to do that,” says Crieght- ney, who makes his RYC debut, although he has appeared in TV commercials. “I have learned so much from our director, Lawrence Axmith, who brings such a great energy to the process.” “Even my friends who don’t do theatre are excited for me, that I’m doing a show in a downtown theatre in a professional environment,” adds Di Rosa. ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ is based on the Old Testa- ment story of Joseph, whose father Jacob loved him more than any of his children. Jacob, in the Book of Genesis, gives Joseph “a coat of many colours,” and his jealous brothers take it to mean Joseph will one day lead the family. Both Di Rosa and Crieghtney aspire to performing arts careers. They credit their training with St. Mary’s Improv Team and the RYC, which is a program of the kids division of the Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts, an intensive, post-sec- ondary performing arts training program. Di Rosa and Crieghtney’s hard work pays off on Dec. 14, when ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ opens in the first of 15 performances at the Bathurst Street Theatre. The theatre is at 736 Bathurst St. (at Len- nox Street, just south of Bloor Street), To- ronto. Tickets are $20 and available from www.ticketmaster.ca. Or call (416) 872- 1111. Durham girl performing in National Ballet production By Melissa Mancini mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A local girl is about to per- form the biggest dance of her young life. Yvonne Kane is just 13 and is one of 200 students from Canada’s National Ballet School who will perform in The National Ballet of Canada’s ‘The Nutcracker’ at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto this year. Kane is a full-time student in the profes- sional ballet program at the school. She currently lives in the school’s residence, but gets to come home to her family in Whitby on the weekend. The Grade 8 stu- dent is in her second year at the school. She said she is “a bit nervous and a bit excited” about dancing her three parts in the ballet: a paper doll, a unicorn and a lady in waiting. “It is stressful with all the costume changes, but I am really excited to be on the big stage.” Kane was born in Alexandria, Scotland and came to Canada with her parents, Valerie and John Kane, and her two older siblings, Cheryl and Kevin, in March 1995. Kane has a third sibling, Rosalyn, who was born here in 1998. Kane’s family will be there to cheer her on at the opening night of the show on Dec. 8 and will be watching from the crowd during two additional performances. Kane has been dancing for almost 10 years. From 2004 to 2006, she was part of the Janice Lynn School of Dance com- petitive dance team. She performed ballet, jazz, tap and musical theatre. She said the switch to full-time ballet school has been fun, but not easy. “It’s been a really big adjustment, it’s re- ally different,” she said. “Before I used to do a lot of different kinds of dance, now it’s ballet only.” Not that she is complaining, because she said ballet is the type of dance she likes to perform the most. The young ballerina even has her own ritual before she goes on stage. “I like it to be really quiet before I go on stage so I can go over the steps,” Kane said. She said she loves wearing the fancy costumes and dancing in them. Of the three she will wear in ‘The Nutcracker’, the unicorn costume is her favourite. And with all the costumes and make-up sometimes she feels like a star. “They teach us how to put on our make- up, but if we need help there are make-up artists and dressers there,” she said. “It’s really cool.” She said the best part of being included in the performance is going to the dress rehearsals with the rest of the performers. “When you go to the company and see the principal dancers that is really excit- ing... everyone is really nice to us,” said Kane, who hopes to be a principal dancer one day. Kirsten Roach, who attends St. Lawrence University, in Canton, New York, on an athletic scholarship, scored the first goal of her freshman season to help the Saints record a 3-1 victory over the Yale University Bulldogs in ECAC wom- en’s hockey action in New Haven, Connecticut, recently. Roach started the season on defence, but was moved to forward four games ago. Since then, she’s recorded a goal and an assist in those games. Roach played both positions while serving as captain of the Durham Junior Lightning women’s hockey team last year. St. Lawrence is currently ranked fifth in the nation in women’s hockey, sporting a 11-3-0 overall (7-1-0 league) record on the season. The Saints return to action to- night (Friday) against the University of Maine. Kirsten Roach Panthers stave off gritty Attack By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com DURHAM — One would think a measure of satisfaction would ema- nate from Pickering Panthers head coach Mark Joslin after his club gath- ered in a much-needed win from the rival Ajax Attack. After all, the two clubs are locked in a battle to secure one of six playoff spots in the OHA Ontario Provin- cial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League’s South Conference. Although the Panthers scored their second consecutive win in the past two weeks over the Attack, 6-4 at the Pickering Recreation Complex in a rare Wednesday night contest, the head coach was in no mood to celebrate. After playing a decent first half of the game and piling up a formidable 5-0 lead, the Panthers lapsed into bad habits, allowing a scrappy At- tack squad to battle back to within two goals and threatening for more when the final buzzer sounded. That kind of on-again, off-again effort from his players has driven Joslin to distraction before, and this night was no exception. “We certainly did have a good start, but I was not happy with the final score, that’s for sure. We let them back into the game. We play our next three games against the top three teams in the division and if we don’t play a full 60 minutes it won’t be fun. We get up 5-0 and then we start playing bad-habit hockey. You can’t do that against Markham, St. Mike’s and Vaughan. We’ve really got to pay attention to detail.” Joslin was also unhappy about the number of shots on the Pickering goal, 50 to be exact, which was a clue to how lax defensively the Panthers became in the second half of the contest. Starting goaltender Bran- don Poderzay was lifted after two periods after being beaten for two successive goals by Ajax’s Ben Skin- ner just seven seconds apart late in the second. Joslin noted Poderzay wasn’t lift- ed for the rapid-fire goals, but rather because he lost a contact lens and didn’t have a second pair on hand. Backup Terrance Reid was beaten twice on 21 Ajax shots in the third. On the bright side, the Panthers re- ceived a solid contribution from their top forward line of Greg Payne, Andy Andreoff and Jamie MacQueen. The unit accounted for seven points in the contest, including a two-goal ef- fort by Payne. Wednesday’s win by Pickering broke a two-game losing streak after the Panthers came up empty against the Vaughan Vipers (5-0) in Vaughan last Monday and to the Markham Waxers (8-6) at the complex last Fri- day. And, it also put the Panthers up 3-2 in the six-game season series against the Attack, with one meeting remaining. Moreover, with the victory, the Panthers (9-19-1) pulled into a three-way seventh-place tie with the Attack (9-20-1) and the Durham Fury in the South Conference stand- ings. All three clubs are currently five points in arrears of the North York Rangers for the sixth and final playoff spot in the conference. Meanwhile, the Attack is mired in a four-game losing string, includ- ing two losses to Pickering. They were shut out of the win column last weekend, dropping a 6-3 decision to the St. Mike’s Buzzers at the Ajax Community Centre last Sunday, which followed on the heels of a 4-1 loss to the Toronto Junior Canadi- ans, also in Ajax, last Saturday. Offence will be a big question mark for the Attack from here on in, as they dealt two of their more prolific scorers, Paul Chiasson and Chris Gelencser, to the division rival Toronto Junior Canadians for cash and considerations. Moreover, they’ll also lose their top scorer, Kyle Ramsay, for this weekend’s games as he’s set to join the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League. The Pickering juniors return to the ice tonight (Friday) in Markham to meet the Waxers. On Sunday, the Panthers are home against the St. Michael’s Buzzers at 6:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Attack is on the road to Toronto this weekend, play- ing the Dixie Beehives Saturday night and the North York Rangers on Sunday. This year represents the 30th anniversary of the Pickering Ringette Association tournament, with 33 teams compet- ing in divisions from the youngest (bunnies, ages four to seven) to the open division, which features players ages 18 and over. The tournament got under way on Wednesday and Thursday, with the bulk of games played today (Friday) and Saturday at the Pickering Recreation Complex and Don Beer arenas. The championship games in all divisions will be played on Sunday afternoon. Most of all, PRA president Allan Clark says, the tournament has always brought together the best ringette teams to the event, with many coming back year after year. More- over, the tournament is Ontario Ringette Association-sanctioned and also serves as a provincial qualifier, with teams acquiring points based on where they place at the tournament. The lone drawback, says Clark, is although the tournament’s organizing committee at- tempts to accommodate as many teams as possible, many are turned away as the divi- sions fill up early. “We still had to disappoint a lot of teams, but we’re trying to expand it next year so we can add more teams,” he says. PRA teams will be well represent- ed at their own tournament, icing teams in most divisions. The tournament of- ficially opens on Saturday at noon, with Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan doing the honours. The mayor will be presented a Provincial team jersey and one of the medals from the tourna- ment. Following the opening, the PRA invites residents to its Santa Skate. There are plenty of off-ice activities sur- rounding the tournament over the weekend, with the O’Brien Room set aside for fun and games for the kids, including the fastest shot with the ring and other skill competitions. For more information on the tournament, including schedules, log on to the PRA’s website at www.pickeringringette.ca.
