Booklet offers advice on dealing with emergencies Delivered with today’s paper Students take a stand against bullying By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com PICKERING — From shirts to scarves to sticky notes taped to their shoes, students at a Pickering elementary school went pink on Wednesday as part of an anti- bullying campaign that’s spread- ing around the world. The students at Altona For- est Public School were inspired by what happened this Septem- ber at Central Kings Rural High School in Nova Scotia. When a Grade 9 student was bullied because he wore a pink shirt to school, Grade 12s David Shepherd and Travis Price at the Nova Scotia school decided to do something about it. They went out and bought 50 pink shirts and tank tops to pass out to their classmates and messaged their friends, asking them to wear pink to school the next day. Hundreds of students showed up wearing pink, about half the school, send- ing a strong anti-bullying mes- sage and creating what the boys dubbed a sea of pink. Their action drew interna- tional media attention and many schools, like Altona Forest, de- cided to hold their own pink days. “It’s so important to bring real life, current events into the class- room. This is something that hap- pened this year in Canada,” said Grade 6 teacher Paula Mbonda whose class organized the theme day. “We’re trying to stop bullying at our school and we’re going to Police want drivers to share the gift of safety Melissa Mancini mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM — If you choose to drink and drive, your choice this holiday season can have devastat- ing consequences. That was clear at the 2007-08 RIDE launch at the Durham Col- lege/UOIT campus on Thursday. Organizers brought up the stark reality about the fallout from drinking and driving includ- ing nationwide figures provided by Mothers Against Drunk Driv- ing which reveal that more than three Canadians are killed and 190 injured every day because of im- paired driving. And they also pointed out there is an obvious choice to be made: you must choose an alternate way home if you take a drink. To illus- trate the point a hearse, an ambu- lance, a taxi and police cars were brought to campus. “They signify the choices,” said DRPS Staff Inspector Brian Fazack- erley. “Driving is a privilege.” So far this year 22 people have been killed in motor vehicle ac- cidents in Durham, according to DRPS Deputy Chief Chuck Mer- cier. Oshawa Regional Councillor John Neal reminded attendees of yet another option for getting home: public transit. The regional bus service has ex- tended hours over the holidays and DRT buses go everywhere, he said. Councillors still question ability to finish extension by 2013 By Erin Hatfield ehatfield@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Questions still unan- swered, Regional Council unanimous- ly approved the Hwy. 407 extension recommended route. Councillors peppered Dan Remol- lino, Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Hwy. 407-project manager, and Doug Allingham, consultant project manag- er, with questions about the extension of Hwy. 407 east to Hwy. 35/115, in Clarington. At the Nov. 21 Council meeting, members grilled them, asking whether the highway would be a public or pri- vate road, probing the timeline and questioning if the highway will be completed as one project. Consultants, however, responded to many of the questions that details are yet to be worked out. “This will be built by the Province and the federal government, but im- plementation hasn’t been determined so the decision hasn’t been made it if will be a toll road,” Mr. Remollino said. “We have no knowledge if it will be a public or private road.” Council approved the plan in prin- ciple, as a means to advance and com- plete the environmental assessment (EA) of the highway extension. The extension would be about 70 kilometres long, including two links connecting Hwy. 407 to Hwy. 401. In March the provincial and federal gov- ernments committed to a 2013 com- pletion date for the construction of the extension and the links. As a result, the project team is now working on an accelerated schedule. According to the new schedule, the EA will be submitted in the spring of 2009, followed by the detailed design and property acquisition and construction beginning in the spring of 2012 - a timeline of which councillors are skep- tical. “We recognize the 2013 deadline is ambitious, but we are putting the staff and the strategy in place to try to achieve that,” Mr. Remollino said. “There are a lot of elements that are beyond our control.” Regional Chairman Roger Ander- son congratulated the consultants on where they are with the project, but said in jest, if they achieve the auda- cious timeline he’ll make sure every- one on council is there for the ground breaking. “I think you can see you have the support of council and the community, but the problem is the timing,” Mr. An- derson said. “Even you can’t stand there and say this will be completed by 2013. I think the schedule is something that con- tinually needs to be looked at.” Showroom: 577 Ritson Rd. S. Taking the bus is an attractive option for Durham and UOIT students be- cause they have a pass for DRT buses included in their tuition fees. RIDE started full-time patrol Thurs- day and units will be out in force until the new year. The team consists of eight officers and one sergeant who work night shifts during the holidays to screen vehicles. “(The officers are) giving up family time because they believe, as we all do, in the importance of this,” said Staff Insp. Fazackerley. Colin Feeney, vice-president of the Durham Chapter of MADD Canada, said because so many people carry cellphones while driving they should use them to report suspected impaired drivers. “This is the time of year to exchange gifts... this year share the gift of safety... by making people aware...by being ed- ucated,” said Deputy Chief Mercier. Classmate Keziah Scott said she tries to stop bullying when she sees it. “We were hoping it would carry through the rest of the year because I personally see a lot of bullying going on outside and in the play yard,” she said. The Grade 6s made a fundraiser out of it for their class trip by asking stu- dents to donate $1 if they wore pink. The students spread the word in a vari- ety of ways including announcements, personalized labels for everyone’s agenda reminding them of the event and a class blog. “It ties in with our social studies unit, we’re learning about marketing and advertising,” said Grade 6 student Angela Bosilkovski. To add to the fun, principal Heather Stuart agreed to wear a pink whoopee cushion costume if 75 per cent of the kids showed up in pink. They did, and Ms. Stuart visited every classroom in the school sporting the costume. “She always made sure they got the message, but they had a good laugh,” said Ms. Mbonda. ✦ Principal from page 1 Principal was pretty in pink DURHAM — Regional Council isn’t quite prepared to endorse a resolu- tion that calls chemical pesticides into question. The City of Waterloo passed a reso- lution and forwarded it to Durham Regional Council for consideration, calling on the federal government to immediately review and confirm the safety and the efficacy of all chemical pesticides approved by the federal gov- ernment. It also asks the Province to review pesticides approved for sale and use in Ontario. “Certainly I think the agricultural community has grave concerns about this,” Uxbridge Councillor Howie Her- rema said. “This goes far beyond cos- metic.” Scugog Mayor Marilyn Pearce said she agreed with Coun. Working York Region District School Board teacher Julia McCrea won an Oshawa trustee seat last November. However, under the Education Act, a trustee cannot be employed by a school board without taking a leave of absence. The nomination form Ms. McCrae signed asked if she was an employee of “the” school board, not “a” school board. After the election, she was declared ineligible and the Durham board held a byelection to fill the seat, picking up the $130,000 tab. Since Ms. McCrea was certified as a candidate in the election, it’s unclear whether the problem lay with the Oshawa clerk’s office or the documenta- tion provided by the Province. The board wrote to the Province in September asking whether the correct form was used and, if it was, asking that the ministry ensure all municipal election forms meet the requirements of the Act. The board also asked that the behaviour of the Oshawa clerk be reviewed. “The nomination form that was used by the City of Oshawa for candidates of both the Board of Education and Council was based on Form 1. This form is a Minister’s regulation under the Mu- nicipal Elections Act, 2006,” wrote John S. Burke, deputy minister of municipal affairs and housing,. Uxbridge-Brock trustee Joe Allin asked whether the letter indicated that Form 1 was the correct form to use. Director of Education Craig Burch said he’s not absolutely sure that was said. The board felt it had to write another letter to the Province clarifying its position, asking again that its concerns be addressed. Board wants one more go at Province durhamregion.comP PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, NOVEMBER 25 2007 EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR NEWS ADVERTISER Metroland Durham Region Media Group Tim Whittaker, Publisher Joanne Burghardt, Editor-in-Chief Mike Johnston, Managing Editor Duncan Fletcher, Director of Advertising Andrea McFater, Retail Advertising Manager Eddie Kolodziejcak, Classified Advertising Abe Fakhourie, Distribution Manager Lillian Hook, Office Manager Cheryl Haines, Composing Manager Janice O’Neil, Composing Manager [ Contact us ]-- News/Sales 905-683-5110; Clas- sifieds 905-683-0707; Distribution 905-683-5117; News Fax 905-683- 0386; General Fax 905-683-7363; E-mail mjohnston@durhamregion. com; Mailing Address; 130 Com- mercial Ave., Ajax, Ont. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Maurice Brenner issue far from over While Pickering councillors are talking about moving on with the business of the City after deciding not to pay former councillor Maurice Brenner’s legal fees, we believe this issue will be around for a long time to come. And, when it is finally over, our feeling is that Pickering tax- payers will be on the hook, not for $50,000 in legal bills, but for at least three times that amount, if not much more, following a lawsuit expected from Mr. Brenner. A very brief re-cap. In May, 2006, Mr. Brenner was charged with fraud related to expense claims he filed with the City. An Ontario court judge in June 2007 dismissed the charges. Since then, council has debated whether to re-imburse Mr. Brenner for his legal fees. There have been allegations and denials and, in short, the issue has been a killer in terms of council unity. Monday’s council meeting provided some high drama and several councillors spoke well on the issue. Councillor Jennifer O’Connell had obviously done her homework and provided an excellent historical context for her decision, which she ac- knowledged would be unpopular, to pay the bills. Councillor David Pickles was right to state that, if the expenses were cov- ered by the City, a release should be included in the agreement protecting the City, and ultimately taxpayers, from future legal action. Obviously, it became a moot point. But, it was Councillor Doug Dickerson who asked the ques- tions that remain unanswered, questions we share. Since a Freedom of Information request for Mr. Brenner’s invoices was never filed with the City, an unknown somebody, obvi- ously a City insider, took the information and leaked it. The timing of when this all became public, given the close proxim- ity of the 2006 election, is suspect. Most disturbing of all is that an insider at the City leaked this information and the name of that person remains a mystery. While City business must and will go on, it will take a lot of mouthwash to eliminate the bad taste that this has left. We understand the tough decision each councillor had in regard to paying the legal bills. But, in opting not to pay $50,000, councillors have virtu- ally assured themselves and taxpayers of a court case that will likely cost much more. Could be good reasons for lower crime and clearance rate To the editor: Re: Crime rate, clearance rate both down in 2006, Oct. 12. Regional chairman Roger Anderson is quoted as saying that a dropping crime rate coupled with a dropping clear- ance rate for criminal code offences means the police are not doing their job. Apparently what this region needs is more criminals com- mitting criminal code offences. Toward that end, perhaps Mr. Anderson would like to invent -- sorry: I should say “sign into law” some new crimes so police can begin arresting those citizens who have thus far remained so stubbornly not ar- rested. Let’s make “Failing to Stoop and Scoop” a criminal code of- fence. That would make at least some of our residents happy. Or maybe -- just maybe -- Deputy Chief Chuck Mercier is right. Maybe crime prevention efforts are working. Maybe fewer crimes are being committed. Why won’t Mr. Anderson entertain the possibility that crime prevention, education and our relative prosperity may have us on the path to a better future? Brian Latimer Bowmanville Durham residents head to Richmond Hill to catch up S ome things change and some things don’t. I made the remark to an old ac- quaintance last weekend as about 30 former high school chums gathered in Richmond Hill for a get-together. It turns out many of us headed east after leaving Scarborough, settling in places like Ajax and Whitby and Scugog Town- ship. So, after pleas from a dear old friend to attend, it wasn’t hard to say ‘sure’ and, as the night approached, I truly was looking forward to it. I met an old friend in the old ‘hood and in 20 minutes we were walking through a very busy Jack Astors, finally spotting the group. And then the ‘Oh my God’s’ and ‘I can’t believe its’ began. In addition to my 1983 class from Cardinal Newman, a few students from a year or two behind us came, as did one of our Science teachers. Even better, six or seven of us were grads from both New- man and St. Richard’s, so it really was a trip down memory lane. Some (I’m not one of them) had changed very little in a quarter century, prompting jokes about George Ham- ilton or Dick Clark-like deals with the devil to remain eternally young. But I guess my acquaintance and I were talking about our personalities and, re- ally, people don’t generally change that much. Funny how seeing a face from your past often prompts an immediate and specific memory, like a trip to Wasaga Beach. At one point, I physically grouped three friends from grade and high school together just so I could marvel at the scene. In the days following the reunion, as I thought about it, I couldn’t help chok- ing up a little, prompting me to wonder why. Is it simply the comforting past, where nothing changes? Is it that the past is gone forever and mortality beck- ons (“O Death in Life, the days that are no more!”)? Are my high school memo- ries so good (they generally are) that I long for ‘the good old days’? Maybe it’s regret and sadness at letting so much time pass before seeing, or trying to get in contact with, people who meant and mean a lot to me. My dear friend, Laurie, who gave me a long, tight hug when we met, prob- ably said it best. “Yes my friend, our advancing age makes us sentimental,” she e-mailed. “But it’s a good thing. And it is healthy to show it.” Darn it, I’m choking up again. I really am turning into my dad. Mike Ruta’s column appears every third Friday. E-mail mruta@durhamregion. com. Mike Ruta news editor R eunion a journey back in time Church concert to raise funds for Malawi By Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Out of a popula- tion of 14 million, there are about one million orphans in the African country of Malawi. About half the orphaned chil- dren are left without parents be- cause of HIV and AIDS. Mark MacKnight, pastor at the Christian Life Centre in Ajax, saw first-hand the situation while there in the early fall. “The median age in Malawi is 16.7 years,” Pastor MacKnight says, adding the average life expectancy is about 43 years. In Canada, the average life ex- pectancy is approaching 80. Children in the orphanages range in age from babies to teen- agers, Pastor MacKnight says. Malawi is in southeast Africa, bordered by Mozambique, Zam- bia and Tanzania. About 267 people become in- fected by AIDS on a daily basis, while 139 die each day from the disease, he says. “So, it’s happen- ing in a huge way.” When the 2004 tsunami hit southern Asia, the world respond- ed, the pastor notes. With HIV and AIDS, “there’s a tsunami hap- pening everyday, the impact is so great. “You notice very few old men. There are few men our age,” the 46-year-old says. “It’s typical of what happens in Africa because of HIV and AIDS. Fifty per cent of orphans are from AIDS,” he adds. “Some kids are lucky if they get fed once a day,” he notes. In one instance, a newborn girl was left in garbage and some- one found her, Pastor MacKnight stated. “Malawi women help raise these children.” Pastor MacKnight made his first trip to the country from Sept. 29 to Oct. 12. Among those he trav- elled with was Gary Nettleship, the head pastor at Trinity Pentecostal Church in Oshawa. “The reason I went to Africa specifically, I was invited to attend a pastors’ conference,” he says. “While there, I had the chance to visit and go into a village.” Orphanages are being built, which then become community property. Orphans, he says, face the op- tions of being on their own, help- ing to raise their families, they don’t get to go to school and they have to enter the labour force. “It’s a cycle down,” Pastor MacKnight adds. Rather than western organi- zations and governments coming in and dictating what should be done, aid is directed to the coun- try. From there, faith-based and aid organizations work with the locals. “For me as a pastor, it was excit- ing there was a ‘made in Africa’ kind of response,” he says. The donations of items, such as sewing machines, are helping people “break the cycle of pov- erty.” One village is growing some of its own food. The food will be used to feed themselves, to be sold and the seeds can be sold to other vil- lages. “It’s not a hand out, it’s a hand up. “This approach, they’re helping their own village. They’re using the strength in their own villages,” Pastor MacKnight states. Orphanages are also a place “where medicines can be given out. If they test positive, they can receive medicine that can pro- long their lives,” he says, but adds there’s a stigma to being tested. To help raise money, the Chris- tian Life Centre is staging a concert on Dec. 8 featuring Jacob Moon and the Welcome Christmas Or- chestra. “It will be a wonderful night of Christmas music. It’s a gift to the community.” He notes, “Friends of CLC are giving money to cover the costs of the night.” That means all the money raised will go to help in Malawi. Tickets are selling for $10 each. As well, there will be the op- portunity to donate while at the church. There’s seating for 500, so it’s possible to raise $5,000. “Jacob Moon is a wonderful art- ist and this will be a really wonder- ful Christmas event,” Pastor MacK- night states. Tickets can be bought by calling the church at 905-686-1411. Index Energy plans to invest $50 million to develop a state-of-the art cogeneration/ district energy facility in Ajax, which will generate electricity, steam, hot water and chilled water, primarily from wood bio- mass, a renewable energy source. District energy involves the utilization of one heat source to heat multiple buildings. Cogeneration involves the production of electricity and useful heat energy simul- taneously from a common fuel source. The Ajax Steam Plant is planned to undergo a total redevelopment incorpo- rating both district energy and cogenera- tion technology in order to achieve the highest level of effi ciency. See the following link to David Su- zuki’s Foundation in support of district energy http://www.davidsuzuki.org/Cli- mate_Change/Solutions/Buildings.asp. Development Potential The cogeneration/district energy fa- cility has the potential to generate up to 50 megawatts of electricity utiliz- ing wood biomass as the primary fuel source and natural gas as a backup fuel source. The Town of Ajax has a pres- ent electricity demand of approximately 80 megawatts. Therefore, the proposed cogeneration/district energy facility has the potential if fully developed to pro- vide the Town of Ajax with a substantial portion of its electricity demand from a renewable energy resource. In light of the forecasted shortage of electricity in Ontario, which is further magnifi ed as the Province phases out its coal genera- tion facilities, the Town of Ajax would benefi t signifi cantly from having such a development in its midst. Moreover, In- dex Energy is prepared to sell a portion of its electricity to the Town of Ajax to ensure adequate electricity supply to the Town and to provide back up electric- ity in the event of an emergency. “We anticipate that the electricity generated from our facility will be classifi ed as a green energy source (the facility needs to be eco logo certifi ed).” The Ajax Steam Plant has previously qualifi ed for car- bon credits and we expect that the new cogeneration/district energy facility will qualify as well. Index Energy is prepared to offer the Town of Ajax a royalty in connection with the steam/hot water and/or chilled water distribution lines, which would provide the Town with another source of revenue. Emission Control Index Energy will be incorporating the latest emission control technology to meet the most stringent emissions stan- dards in Ontario today. Index Energy offered to conduct a joint study with the Town of Ajax to determine the most suitable emission control technology to achieve the above objective. Index En- ergy remains hopeful that the Town will decide to participate in this study. The facility will utilize wood biomass as its primary fuel source, which is a renewable resource that has been strongly promoted by the Kyoto Protocol as a clean fuel, car- bon neutral alternative. The reasoning is AJAX’S GREEN ENERGY SOLUTION! >> see next page Ajax Steam Plant – North View Front View of the New Ajax District Energy Plant Index Energy is planning to make a substantial investment in the revitalization of the existing steam plant structure. Offi ce Perspective of the New Ajax District Energy Plant Index Energy is planning to construct new offi ce space at the Ajax Steam Plant to provide offi ce space for its Canadian headquarters. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 25, 2007 PAGE 9 A/Pdurhamregion.com that the carbon dioxide absorbed by trees is released when the tree is burned. Moreover, methane gas is released, in ad- dition to carbon dioxide if a tree is left to decompose in a landfi ll, which is another ‘Greenhouse Gas’ that is contributing to global warming. A case can also be made that by using wood biomass as a fuel source reduces carbon emissions, as it re- duces the overall dependency on electri- cal energy generated from other sources, like coal, oil and other fossil fuels that are contributing to global warming. Steam Customer- Based Generation In Sweden entire towns benefi t from the operation of cogeneration/district energy facilities both in residential and commercial applications. Index Energy is committed to realizing this objective in Ajax so that the development of the facility will benefi t both residents and businesses and result in a reliable energy supply at a reduced cost, which is gen- erated from a renewable energy source. As part of realizing this objective, Index Energy is actively engaged in develop- ing steam customer-based generation opportunities in Ajax. Steam customer- based generation is only possible with infrastructure in place such as a cogen- eration/district energy facility (Ajax Steam Plant). The benefi t to the Town of Ajax by implementing steam cus- tomer-based generation would be enor- mous and change the energy market in Ajax signifi cantly for the benefi t of local businesses and residents. The resulting effect would be to bring the advantages of cogeneration directly to the energy consumer. Electricity will be generated from a turbine utilizing high pressure steam at the Ajax Steam Plant and the residual low pressure steam will be delivered to our customers via a dedicated steam dis- tribution system. We have allocated $1.5 million to improve the existing steam dis- tribution system. Steam customer-based generation involves the steam being used a second time to generate electricity and then the exhaust thermal heat exiting the back end of the turbine can be used for heating purposes. The resulting effect is that the steam is used three times or tri- generation. This process can benefi t both industry and residents in both factory and apartment type applications, by in- sulating the energy consumer against the high cost of natural gas and electricity, as a small turbine can be installed in such settings and pass on the benefi t of higher energy effi ciency directly to the consum- er. We anticipate that steam customer - based cogeneration will transform the energy market in Ajax by providing low cost renewable energy to both residential and industrial applications that will in- crease Ajax residents’ standard of living and provide business with a competitive advantage found no where else in the GTA. Index Energy intends to use its engineers to manage and maintain the turbines installed at its customers’ facili- ties for on-site generation. The cogeneration/district energy fa- cility was designed by lead architect Reg Freethy. www.indexenergy.net >> from previous page Ajax Steam Plant – East View View of Canopy over Wood Storage Yard Index Energy is planning to construct a canopy over the existing wood biomass yard. Report Cards—they are on most parents’ and some kids’ minds this time of year. Like them or not, your child will be getting one – soon! Report cards have come under scrutiny over the past years as the reporting system changes to meet the demands of the new classroom and standardized testing. However, report cards remain one of the best ways to measure your child’s progress towards meeting the expectations for their grade and being ready for the next one. And report cards can paint a picture of how your child is functioning in the classroom. The fi rst report card of the school year is like a check-up on how your child is adjust- ing to the new grade. It is not the fi nal word on academic achievement for the school year as many kids need a couple of months to get back into the school groove. The fi rst report card is a tool to help you identify subjects and be- haviors that may be trouble spots for the rest of the year. Pay atten- tion to poor grades or weak learning skills now. Get your child any extra help that he may need while it’s still early in the school year, and by the next report card he could be back on track! How should we talk to our kids about their report cards? A Report Card discussion is a major step in becoming an active participant in your child’s education. The fi rst step is to review the report card without your child present. Now that you’ve read your child’s report card, sit down together (with no distractions!) and discuss. • Highlight the positives in the re- port card, no matter how small. • Review learning strengths. “You are doing great in math, which is awesome.” • Ask how you can help. “What can I do to help you really succeed?” • Be sure to tell them how pleased you are with their hard work! • Listen to your child and include his or her thoughts, feelings, comments, and wor- ries in the discussion. • Stay optimistic. Now is the time to devel- op a plan to get on the right track. • Ask you child for their goals – help make these clear and realistic. • Now develop a plan, and write it down so your child can refer to it regularly to keep on track. Include your child’s goals, your role and your child’s role, and spe- cifi c steps they will take to achieve their goals. Try not to be upset if your child receives disappointing marks on the fi rst report card—with the rest of the school year ahead there is plenty of time to turn a disappointing report card into one he’ll be proud to post on the fridge! Whether you’re or- ganizing a small dinner party or are inviting all of your family and friends to drop in for a holiday open house, the art of hosting can be a diffi cult one to master. Here are some simple tips to help you pull off a spectacular holiday party. Make lists and check them twice. List making will keep you sane, organized and on track so you have enough time to get ev- erything done beforehand. Without them, you’ll fi nd yourself running out for last- minute items that you could easily have well in advance. Surprising Shortcuts. Create items you can prepare in advance. Determine what you can make from scratch but don’t be afraid to rely on pre-made appetizers or leaning on your preferred local restaurant. Some may even be willing to fi ll your casserole dish with your favourite food — your guests will never know. Dessert without diffi culty. For dessert consider serving a premium ice cream like new Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Caramel Latte with gourmet or decorative cookies to add fl air and complimentary texture. Add a dusting of confectionary sugar, cocoa or grated chocolate for the perfect pre- sentation that will impress your guests and their palate. Th ink ahead. Prepare as much as possible in advance so you’ll have more time to enjoy your guests’ company. If you’re hosting a sit-down dinner, set the table the day before — this saves time and a lot of stress the day of the event. Be sure you have enough supplies on hand, such as plates, napkins, glasses and ice. Details, Details, Details. Be sure to set the mood for the party. Consider arranging furniture in clusters to encourage conver- sation. And of course, before the doorbell rings, light candles and turn on the music to create ambiance and set the mood for your soirée. Most importantly, as a host remember to relax and have fun. Keeping things simple will help you to remain stress free so you can enjoy the festivities along with your guests. We like to off er love, tenderness, warmth, and beautiful gifts. Giving our loved one something that is truly special fi lls us with joy and satisfaction, and when we can also share that gift, it is paradise! Off ering paradise for Christmas is pos- sible. What best describes the word “para- dise”? Softness, warmth, well-being, tran- quility, rest... Health centres, spas, and such, are veritable little paradises on Earth where the craziness of everyday life cannot pen- etrate! Th ey are found everywhere, in every region, usually located in inns, hotels, and holiday resorts. You and your loved one will fi nd everything that your hearts desire. Another very special gift for your loved one is a make-over day, which can be of- fered to a man or a woman. To a rhythm that is a little more frenzied that the previous suggestion, this day obviously includes a visit to the hairdresser or barber, a shopping session (sometimes with, some- times without a budget), and ends with a visit to the esthetician – even for the man! Some shopping centres and certain cloth- ing boutiques off er the services of a fashion advisor. For those who prefer to cocoon, you can always bring the spa home: massage slippers, exfoliating cream for satiny- soft skin, invigorating body gel, fi rm- ing face mask, massage gel... A beautiful Christmas night awaits! The gift of well-being for your loved one Advertising Feature This Christmas, every gentle whim to please your loved one is allowed. durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 14 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 25, 2007 Holiday WishesHoliday Wishes Wishing everyoneWishing everyone a Safe anda Safe and Happy Holiday!Happy Holiday! 250 Westney Rd. Raven, 5 years old THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 25, 2007 PAGE 21 A/Pdurhamregion.com C elebrating Christmas without off er- ing a gift to your best friend is un- thinkable! A friend is for better or worse. A friend is for sharing joys and sor- rows. A best friend is like a sister or a broth- er. However, when it comes to choosing a Christmas gift, it is always diffi cult. Among the numerous gifts you can off er, there is always the traditional gift certifi cate. It allows the recipient to select exactly what their heart desires. A gift certifi cate can dou- ble the fun when both friends can share it: a day at the spa, an evening at the theatre, a gastronomical meal at a restaurant, or a fun- fi lled day on the slopes. If your friend has a good sense of humour, you can opt for a personalized gift, such as a chef’s hat and apron, an unusual piece of jewellery, a personalized analysis of their fi rst name, a calligraphy of their name in Arabic or Chinese (found on the Internet by searching for “translator + language”), or a key chain on which you have their favourite expression en- graved. If you want to be a bit more daring, you can off er an astrological or nu- meral reading. If they win the lottery in the next few months, they can thank you! Your friend has never experienced the joy of fl ying? You can arrange their ini- tiation to the air in a Cessna. Your friend has never gone snowmobiling? You can off er a special excursion in the great outdoors. No matter what you decide to give your best friend, a gift that comes from your heart will ensure a deep and lasting friendship. But it doesn’t have to be. All you need to do is pick a theme and then use coordinated décor ac- cessories to create a picture perfect holiday. Themes: Elegant - Create a comfortable and joy- ous space, using the elegance of ivory, gold, copper and bronze accents. Choose coor- dinated holiday items such as wreaths, tree angels and reindeers that have an old world theme with a modern touch of elegance. Cosmopolitan - Combine glossy black, shiny metallics, plush velvet and soft feath- ers to create a sleek and avant-garde holiday theme. Consider a feather tree this year and compliment it with gold and velvet brocade balls. Create your own dining room table centrepiece by lining gold candles down the centre of the table to create a sleek and styl- ish look for guests. Traditional - Classic holiday colours like red, gold and green create natural warm, yuletide memories and is ideal for families with children. Start with a bark wreath on the front door and continue the warmth into the home by hanging festive holly ber- ry garland and decorating the tree with tra- ditional ornaments like reindeers, snowfl ake and ice skates. Romantic - Make a lasting impression with holiday guests by incorporating tones such as white, café au lait and rose as well as accents such as sequins and feathers. Set a soft and soothing mood by lining metallic candles and silver tea-lights along a shelf or fi replace. Majestic - Transform your home into a holiday palace fi t for a king or queen by combining regal burgundy and gold. Incor- porate these colours into soft textures, such as velvet when looking for items such as tree skirts or stockings and accent using medi- eval jewels. Winter Cool - Bring the outside in by adding icy and metallic touches by plac- ing metallic angels, snowfl akes and wreaths into the home. Complete the shimmering winter look by adding subtle accent touches with royal blue and silver accessories. - News Canada Holiday decorating trends: Advertising Feature durhamregion.comP PAGE 24 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 25, 2007 Celebrate WINTER! The Panthers return to action today (Sunday) when they meet the rival Ajax Attack at the Ajax Community Centre at 3 p.m. By Jim Easson Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — One Annandale senior men’s curling rink qualified for re- gionals after winning its draw at the OCA Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company senior men’s zone playdowns at the Ajax club last weekend. The Gord Norton rink won the ‘B’ side of the draw at the zones on Monday and moves on to the regionals at the Weston Golf and Curling Club on Dec. 1 and 2. The ‘A’ side winner at the zone event, from the Port Perry Curling Club, is also competing at regionals. Playing on the Norton rink were Warren Leslie at vice, Mike Trudeau at second and Alex Bianchi at lead. One other Annandale senior rink competed at zones. Bert Durand was replaced by Geoff Peck, along with Carl Vickers, Dave Gaudette, and David Wake. ••• Michael Bryson and his team of Wesley Forget, Sandy Martin, and James McPherson, with Susannah Moylan coaching, won the ‘A’ side of the Pepsi Junior Men’s zone at Annandale last weekend. Team Tim March, with Rob Bush- field, Patrick Janssen, Tyler Ander- son and coach Paul Bourque, won the ‘B’ side. For the junior women, Lesley Pyne skipped the team of Stacey Hogan, Leahanne Legrow, and Jackie Clarke, with Jennifer McGhee as coach, also to an ‘A’ side win. All three teams now advance from the double-knockout play- down to the regionals in Beaverton on Nov. 24 and 25. Last April, the Turcotte team took the Ontario title, and the victory sent Turcotte on to his fourth, and best performance, to date, a visit to the Canadian finals.
