Two units at the plant are in planned outage, preparing for in- creased demand with colder tem- peratures. John Coleby, a senior vice-pres- ident at Pickering, said “it’s the time of year we get all the units ready for the winter peak. “It’s outage time,” he said. “Unit 4 on the ‘A’ side and Unit 7 on the ‘B’ side are in planned outages.” Both are in the middle of 60-day outages, he said during a meeting of the Community Advisory Coun- cil on Tuesday. He added one reactor on each side of the station went down for unplanned outages last week. “Units 1 and 5 were both back in a few days.” Ontario Power Generation pres- ident and CEO Jim Hankinson last week announced third-quarter fi- nancial results for the company. “There was a slight drop in the quarter, but we’re well ahead for the year,” Mr. Coleby stated. For the three months ending on Sept. 30, OPG had net income of $167 million, down from the $181 million for the same period in 2005. However, for the first nine months of this year, net income was $509 million, compared to $206 million for the same period in 2005. The decrease in the third quarter was caused by lower elec- tricity prices. Kadeem Bandali, Natasha and Ali Nurmohamed spent more than 25 hours gathering more than 140 pieces of clothing for the coat drive. The teens, with the help of their parents, dropped off the bags of clothes on Tuesday afternoon. ✦ See Power, Page 4 For more details on these great offers, visit your TELUS store, authorized dealer or retailer, visit telusmobility.com or call 1-866-264-2966. Overall, the demand for electricity was down and that caused the price to drop slightly,” he added. A delegation from the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) will be at Pickering on Dec. 3, Mr. Coleby stated. “They’re here for two weeks to do a full- scale assessment of my plant. It’s one of those continuing things we do in the nuclear industry,” Mr. Coleby said. WANO representatives will study the plant and issue a report to Mr. Coleby in January. He will have two years to deal with any mea- sures. “In two years, they’ll be back to ensure I’ve done everything,” he said. Mr. Coleby added the environmental as- sessment on the possible refurbishment of the ‘B’ side reactors is continuing. The EA is part of the business case OPG is conducting for the refurbishment. Jacquie McInnes, the manager of public affairs at Pickering, said a second round of open houses are being held for the refur- bishment. The dates are Dec. 4 in Whitby at the Centennial Community Centre, 416 Centre St., Dec. 5 in Ajax at the McLean Community Centre, 95 Magill Dr., Dec. 6 in Scarborough at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258, 45 Lawson Rd., and Dec. 7 in Pickering at the OPG building, 889 Brock Rd. All sessions go from 3 to 9 p.m., with a presentation at 7 p.m. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commis- sion is also holding a one-day hearing on Jan. 24 on the EA guidelines. PICKERING — The public is invited to get an update on the stormwater master plan for Frenchman’s Bay. A public information centre is being held Thursday, Nov. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the East Shore Community Centre, 910 Liverpool Rd., in room 4. The City of Pickering is developing the plan in co-ordination with Toronto and Re- gion Conservation as a class environmental assessment. The purpose of the open house is to review detailed objectives for the plan and to review a list of potential stormwater management options being considered. Pickering council endorsed the develop- ment of a five-year implementation plan for Pickering’s waterfront and Frenchman’s Bay. One of the projects in that plan is the formation of the stormwater master plan for the bay and its contributing watersheds. This is to address long-standing concerns re- garding the ongoing decline in the quality of the Frenchman’s Bay ecosystem by control- ling the quality and quantity of storm runoff entering local creeks and the bay. For more information, contact Richard Holborn of the City at 905-420-4660 ext. 2049 or Robert Bishop of Marshall Macklin Monaghan at 905-882-7210. ✦ Power from page 1 Pickering holds open house Thursday for Frenchman’s Bay planPower needs dropped in summer of 2006 Single mom appreciates help during holidays By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — For Anna (not her real name) and her three children, the Santa Claus Fund is helping to bring more joy to their holiday. The single mother heard about the fund, which was established by the Toronto Star in 1906, from the Women’s Multicultural Re- source and Counselling Centre of Durham. This is the second year the WMRCC and its clients have benefitted from the fund, and the third year of the Ajax-Pickering News Advertiser’s involvement. Anna found it difficult to buy Christmas gifts for her children after leaving her abusive husband shortly after arriving in Canada. While she and her family appreci- ate the gifts, without them she said things would be different, but her children would be appreciative of what they do have. “They would be a little bit differ- ent in one way in that we wouldn’t have the extra toys,” she said. “But, they’d learn to be blessed with what we do have. “We would always have joy even if we only have one toy,” she said. Children up to 12 years of age receive a box with a warm sweater, socks, mittens, a hat, book, toy, candy and, starting this year, a toothbrush and toothpaste for children four to 12. Babies receive two sleepers, candy for mom and dad, and a small toy. The items are all new and bought directly from manufacturers at a great cost sav- ings. All money raised is used to buy items contained in the gift boxes. The aim for the Santa fund this year is again 1,000 gift boxes for children in Ajax and Pickering. The 2006 goal is $1.4 million, with plans to distribute 45,000 gift boxes to underprivileged children across Ajax, Pickering, Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton. Esther Enyolu, the WMRCC’s executive director, said about 50 families from the centre will ben- efit from the fund. “It relieves the stress. They are feeling pressure to provide for their children and some children are so young they don’t under- stand mommy can’t afford to buy them this or buy them that,” she said. You are invited to attend our second Environmental Assessment Open House to discuss Ontario Power Generation’s work on the potential refurbishment and continued operation of the Pickering B nuclear station. The potential refurbishment would involve replacing major reactor components to extend the operating life of the reactors for an additional 30 years. An Environmental Assessment (EA) will help with the early identification of any potentially significant environmental effects from refurbishment and continued operations. It also ensures appropriate mitigation measures are identified early in decision making. The open houses will include a presentation on the potential project and the federal environmental assessment process.OPG staff and expert consultants will be on hand to share information about the potential project, answer your questions and discuss next steps in the process. We look forward to seeing you there. It was a special one for me. I was in a well-known grocery store in Scarborough when a voice came over the P.A. system. “At eleven o’clock we will have two minutes of silence.” Five minutes later the voice con- tinued, “The two minutes will start now.” The entire store was quiet. It has been a long time since I have heard of people on the street and in stores pausing to remember. It is to be hoped this practice continues. Perhaps the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have moti- vated more of us to realize the meaning of sacrifice that our veterans and Canadian soldiers have made and are still mak- ing. T ell you what I’m going to do: To morrow around supper time I’m going to come to your street, get out of my car, pull a gun, and begin to shoot at random. Bullets will fly -- I won’t know where they’re going, I’m not aiming -- and maybe somebody will be hit. Or maybe not, and I’ll just continue on my way. Or how about this: When you’re driv- ing during rush hour tomorrow, watch out for my car -- it’s blue -- because I’ll be merging alongside you, but I won’t notice you there. See, I’ll have spent the last couple of hours at a bar, tipping ’em back. My judgment and perception will be blurred. Maybe I’ll kill you, maybe not. In which case would you consider me to be more liable, criminally and morally -- when I pull a gun and shoot up your street, or when I drive along it after having too much to drink? Hyperbole aside, the fact is there’s no difference. That’s what’s so maddening about the continuing willingness of my fel- low citizens to get behind the wheels of their vehicles after they’ve been drink- ing. Durham police are kicking off their holiday RIDE effort this week and they do so fully aware that years of advertis- ing, enforcement and prosecution of drunk drivers has yet to get through to a certain percentage of the citizenry. Yo u want numbers? During a week- end in late September Durham coppers stopped 3,000 vehicles at RIDE checks and busted two people for drinking and driving. In early October they checked 1,500 drivers and pinched four. Three weeks later seven impaired driving charges were laid against 3,000 drivers checked. Over the weekend that began Nov. 10 police stopped 8,000 vehicles and laid 14 drunk driving charges. This is a pattern that is, regrettably, evident each year. The stats can be attributed to increased enforcement, obviously, but it’s more than a tad trou- bling that each effort to step up that enforcement, no matter how miniscule, results in more drunks being busted. So next time you’re unsure about whether to stop a friend from driving after he’s been drinking, imagine him lurching around with a loaded gun in his hand. And stop him. Jeff Mitchell staff writer EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Help us play Santa Fund delivers for Ajax, Pickering kids If you need a great gift idea this year, we’ve got a sugges- tion for you. The yearly Santa Claus Fund recently launched its good work, with the generosity of Greater Toronto Area residents finding a perfect match in the thousands of young kids who face the real prospect of not getting a present this holiday season. While the fund is celebrating its 101st year since it started at The Toronto Star, this is the News Advertiser’s third year of involvement. It wasn’t long before we realized just how great the need is not only in the GTA as a whole, but also right here in Ajax and Pickering. Picture Santa’s warehouse, filled to the brim with 45,000 brightly coloured boxes. Picture volunteers working fever- ishly to sort and pack and ensure each box is ready for deliv- ery in December. Picture the look of joy, relief and, so often, overwhelming gratitude as volunteers turn over the gifts to our neighbours. Indeed, there are dozens of Santa Clauses working hard right here in Ajax and Pickering. Through the donations of Ajax and Pickering residents in 2005, we were able to deliver 1,000 gift boxes to boys and girls up to 12 years old. Across the GTA, the number of children who had a present to open was 45,000. This year, just as many children and their families are experiencing tough times they are working hard to overcome. They need some help to get back on their feet and the gift boxes do make a difference. Inside, children will find a sweater, socks, mittens, a hat, book, toy, candy and a toothbrush and toothpaste for kids four to 12. Babies receive two sleepers, candy for mom and dad and a toy. The items are all new and bought in bulk from manufacturers at great cost savings. The Santa Fund’s fundraising goal this year is an ambitious $1.4 million, but it’s one that reflects the incredible need in our communities. So, once again to work some holiday magic, we need help from generous elves here in Ajax and Pickering. All the money collected is used to cover the costs of the gifts, since all administrative costs are absorbed by the Toronto S tar. As your search for that gift continues, please consider a surprise to remember for the boy and girl next door. No difference between random gunfire and drunk driving Animals now Ajax’s responsibility By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer AJAX — A coyote whiling away the day and a rabbit breeder with a pen problem were two instances Ajax bylaw officers have had to deal with this year. On Jan. 1, the Town took over control of ani- mal control services with the dissolution of the Pickering-Ajax and Whitby (PAW) service that had been in place since 1984. From the begin- ning of the year to the middle of August, more than 700 instances have been investigated. Most have been of the mundane variety, such as dogs running at large (131 incidents) or cats at large (126). There were also 59 calls for dogs barking and 29 times for someone not stoop- ing and scooping. Two incidents involved ‘exotic’ pets, one with a person keeping pigeons. Derek Han- nan, the manager of bylaw services for Ajax, says anyone raising pigeons has regulations they must follow. The other exotic incident was a resident breeding domestic rabbits and “they weren’t penning them properly and they were run- ning all over the neighbourhood,” Mr. Hannan states. Another instance was a coyote sitting at the emergency room doors of the hospital. “He laid near the emergency doors for three hours. Toronto Wildlife came in and took it,” Mr. Hannan notes. (Toronto Wildlife is an agency that deals with wild animals in urban areas.) Coyote sightings “aren’t uncommon. It’s going to happen,” Mr. Hannan says. Educating the public on issues such as stor- ing garbage and feeding animals is necessary, he notes. Leaving food out for small animals will at- tract squirrels and raccoons, he says, but adds smaller animals will attract coyotes. Another issue is the “number of outdoor cats we have. “Bird feeders are great, but with bird feed- ers, they attract other animals. We’re very con- cerned with coyotes coming into residential neighbourhoods. An education process has to take place,” Mr. Hannan states. One instance involved a bear cub seen south of Taunton Road. “It was a cub that probably wandered way from it’s mother. It hasn’t been spotted since. The MNR (ministry of natural resources) was notified,” he says. To wn staff will only deal with calls about wildlife if the public is in danger, he notes. Anyone calling about a nuisance animal, such as a raccoon, skunk or squirrel, is advised to call a licenced pest remover, In Ontario, anyone trapping a fur-bearing animal must be licenced by the ministry of natural resources. Mr. Hannan notes Town staff currently aren’t licenced, and don’t intend to become licenced, in the future. When the Town needs an animal removed, a licenced individual is contacted. Bylaw staff are now certified to use Bite Stick, a tool used by an officer trying to get out of a dangerous situation. A Bite Stick is “s imilar to a collapsible baton the police use. It’s strictly a defensive weapon,” Mr. Hannan says. An instance when the stick would be used would be an animal turning on a bylaw of- ficer. A recent incident involved a lab that had been away from its owner for three days. Someone came home and the dog had “plunked itself down on a neighbour’s porch. It’s pads (on its feet) were bleeding and it was aggressive,” he states. It took a bylaw officer about 90 minutes to get the dog under control, but once he did, the animal’s “mood changed. He was happy and licking.” Staff has been investigating buying a dart gun and tranquillizers. These devices would allow an officer to deal with an aggressive ani- mal while remaining a safe distance away. As for acquiring and using euthanising drugs, “we’re still working with the vet. We have all the equipment. The vet has the medi- cine on order. We have to go in for training,” he says. Euthanising drugs would be “strictly for wildlife, for an animal in severe distress.” This week, bylaw staff were called to an opossum that had been injured and needed to be put down. “We will not put down a dog or cat,” he says, adding a vet would need to take care of those situations. ©Disney'PVSUJNFT UIFGVOJOPOF.BHJDBM+PVSOFZ DEC. 22 – JAN. 1 Buy tickets at www.disneyonice.com Ticket Centres, Rogers Centre Box Office or call (416) 870-8000 TICKET PRICES: $15 - $26 - $39 - $65 VIP - $80 Front Row (Service charges and handling fees may apply.) The alternates are intended to fill in during the absence of trustee SEAC members. Seaton to be built with prevention in mind By David Blumenfeld Staff Writer DURHAM — It’s not hard to pre- dict crime -- the challenge comes in finding the proper design to prevent it. “The people who undertake crime are no different than any- body else and they select their tar- gets using exactly the same prin- ciples... the places they go and the things that they do,” said Mary Beth Rondeau, an architect and development planner with the City of Vancouver. On Monday, Nov. 20, Ms. Ron- deau was in Oshawa as the key- note speaker at the start of a two- day conference for Crime Preven- tion Through Environmental De- sign (CPTED) Ontario, commonly referred to as CPTED Ontario. Members include police, security professionals, planners and archi- tects who use proactive strategies to prevent crime and fear of crime among the public. “Cr ime in the urban environ- ment is highly predictable -- where it’s going to happen, who’s going to do it and when they’re going to do it -- and it doesn’t change much over time,” said Ms. Rondeau, who uses her knowledge of CPTED principles to help create safer en- vironments in Vancouver. Ms. Rondeau said implement- ing general strategies to prevent crime, such as better lighting or video surveillance, will do noth- ing to stop crime if one does not understand the specifics of the en- vironment. She said she uses her own re- search and knowledge in the field of environmental criminology coupled with data from the police to create specific design solutions for particular crimes. Durham Police Constable Mar- ten Wind, president of CPTED Ontario, said just because a struc- ture is built doesn’t make it safe publicly. Removing tall shrubbery that can act as potential hiding places for thieves, adding a climb- ing vine up the side of a building to prevent graffiti and putting proper control mechanisms on doors and adequate lighting all need to be considered in the planning stages, he said, and having a conference where members can share ideas is a great way to learn different strat- egies. “It’s a great crime preventative tool to already start at the begin- ning stages of new developments,” Const. It offers accommodations, riding programs, a petting zoo and wagon rides. The difference between WindReach and other farms that wel- come visitors is that WindReach has been designed with accessibility in mind. The paths on the property are paved, several of the on-site signs have braille, and the wagon ride has a ramp. The accommodations have several features that make them accessible to someone who uses a wheelchair, including a cut-out under the sink, a stove with controls in the front, and a bathroom with a wall shower and a shower chair. But, it’s not just visitors who are on the minds of those running WindReach Farm when thinking of accessibility, it’s also the em- ployees and volunteers, some of whom have physical or cognitive disabilities. One special feature for them is the barn’s feeding room that features a chart with pictures and symbols of how much food each animal gets. That ensures all the employees can understand the feeding program, even if they have a problem with reading. Sandy Mitchell founded WindReach Farm in 1989. Growing up Mr. Mitchell wanted to work on a farm, but because he has cerebral palsy he was always told he couldn’t. “He always wanted to have a farm that people of all ages and abilities could enjoy,” said Kelly Taylor, the programs and activities manager at WindReach. To day the farm has 160 volunteers, includ- ing 85 in the Work Experience Program, which allows summer and co-op students and people with special needs to refine employment and social skills. WindReach is visited by 20,000 people a year who come from all over; they include groups and families, people with dis- abilities and people without. Being accessible is the norm for WindReach. “The more we think about all encompassing disabilities or special needs, the better we will be,” Ms. Taylor said. That is a statement echoed by many who work with ac- cessibility issues on a regular basis. They argue making a store or office more accessible doesn’t just benefit those with disabilities, it benefits everyone. “What’s good for the people with disabilities is also good for people without disabilities,” said Henry Kortekaas, chairman of the Region of Durham’s Accessibility Advisory Committee (DAAC). “Many of the things we are advocat- ing for are better for everybody.” For example a feature such as sliding doors not only benefits someone using a wheelchair, but it also benefits a parent with a stroller, someone with a broken leg or someone with a visual impairment. Despite the increase in awareness about ac- cessibility over the years, there remains many areas that are still off-limits to people with disabilities. The most progress has been made for people using wheelchairs to get around, as many believe it is a visible physical disabil- ity and easier to think about when designing space. Mr. Kortekaas believes one of the things that needs to change in order to increase acces- sibility is attitudes and education. Today, there are still individuals who refer to people using a wheelchair as being disabled, instead of saying a person with a disability so the person comes first and is not defined by his or her disability. Education and awareness is slowly getting to the general public. One of the ways it is being accomplished is through municipal accessibility advisory committees such as the Region of Durham’s. Pauline Reid, policy and research adviser in the region- al chief administrative officer’s office, co-ordinates with the DAAC. Through her involve- ment she has learned a lot. “I think about (accessibil- ity) all the time now,” she said. “I think about how (design) will impact people with a wide range of disabilities -- that’s another thing, it’s opened my eyes to disabilities other than mobility disabilities.” As a citizen and municipal representative, Ms. Reid looks at accessibility as a right, not as doing a favour. “We have to think of this not as providing ac- cess for those with disabilities, but as providing full citizenship,” she said, adding there is no way to know who will need those features as someone once told her those who don’t have a disability are just TABs — temporarily able- bodied. While Ms. Reid’s eyes have been opened through her experience with DAAC, she real- izes municipal committees can’t reach out and individually educate every resident so aware- ness is going to take time. The local AACs have projects in the works and have done things in the past to reach out and educate their com- munities. In the summer, the Ajax AAC made a pre- sentation to a town Business Improvement Area to show business owners how they could make their operations more accessible. The committee has a pamphlet with four steps on how to make a business more accessible, including keeping aisles clear of clutter or displays, adding a ramp and having handrails at the front entrance, and offering a delivery service. Organizations such as the Canadian Na- tional Institute for the Blind and the Canadian Hearing Society also serve an educational role, along with providing services to clients. Lesley MacDonald, national co-ordinator of accessible design services, said the CNIB sits on different committees that deal with standards to try to get changes to make society more accessible. “We do advocate for making the environ- ment accessible in all areas... We make sure we’re at the table where those decisions are made,” she said. Ms. MacDonald said sometimes vision loss (as well as hearing impairments) is overlooked in accessibility planning because the first thing people think of is wheelchairs and physical dis- abilities. She added that is starting to change. “You are starting to see that more and more design is being done for all disabilities,” she said. The CNIB does workshops on acces- sible design that attract a lot of interest. Some changes in design have included braille maps at hotels, accessible pedestrian signals, and texture on stairs to indicate the edge. “It moves slowly,” she said. “But, it’s hap- pening.” Next : Employment Searchkeyword: Access2006 Aw areness key to change BECOMING MORE ACCESSIBLE AS A SOCIETY IS HAPPENING, BUT SLOWLY Celia Klemenz / Metroland Durham Region Media Group ASHBURN — Jim Sadgrove, a Skills Link participant, works with Tracy Kotarba, animal care assistant, to groom ‘Maybe’, one of the don- keys at WindReach Farm. Jimmy Williams, owner of 123 Limo, was contacted by Ajax residents Brian Muntz and Patsy Schroder when they noticed his yellow Hummer outside his business. The pair informed Mr. Williams about 11-year-old Adam Sutherland, who is a special-needs child. Adam loves Hummers and the pair asked Mr. Williams if they could hire the Hummer but Mr. Williams went one step further and donated the use of his personal vehicle. Mr. Williams brought the vehicle to Adam’s home in Whitby and took Adam and some relatives for a two-hour ride through trails in Courtice. After the ride Adam, front left, posed for a picture with his mom Brenda, cousin Connor McNeil and Mr. Williams. Rick Hansen event raised $11,603 DURHAM — In 1985, Rick Hansen pushed his wheelchair out of Vancouver, BC and set out on a journey that would stun thousands. He travelled 40,000 kilometres through 34 countries over two years, raising more than $26 million. Ajax will benefit from funds raised at the fourth annual Rick Hansen event presented by Scotia- bank. More than $11,603 was raised by volunteers, led by Jenny Schledermann and Don Carr. Rick Hansen’s Wheels in Motion is an annual event held all over Canada and every June tens of thousands of people wheel, walk or run to raise funds that help people affected by spinal cord injury and related disabilities and for research. The funds will help the community by support- ing the construction of the KaBOOM! accessible playground at Greenwood Park, and support the purchase of a replacement accessible swing for the playground at WindReach Farm. W ith its festive colours, holiday get-togethers and snow-fi lled activities, this time of year provides a great opportu- nity to practice some creative digital family photography. Yet many parents are in the dark when it comes to snapping that great winter photo. Because children are quick-moving by nature, a digital camera will also allow you to catch them on the go. With a number of winter activities that involve speed - like skiing or skating - it is important to have a camera that will capture those action shots. Many of today’s digital cameras have built- in fl exibility which allows you to immedi- ately delete any pictures that are not up to par. So go ahead - shoot without the fear of wasting fi lm on blurry or missed shots. Some cameras, like Fujifi lm’s F30 model, even have specifi c technology that virtually eliminates blurry photos, or those that are too dark. Look for these features when pur- chasing your next camera. In order to take great holiday pictures of your little ones, here are a few tips to help you along the way: Stay close: For babies and young children, keep a parent nearby in order to distract the child’s attention from the camera. Th is will allow for a more natural-looking picture. Lay low: Kneel or lie down at your child’s level for a more intimate and closer view of your subject. Use that LCD screen: Children (in- cluding toddlers and babies) love to see images of themselves, so show them the results after you have taken the picture. It will give them incentive to pose for the next round of shots. A different view: Shoot everyday objects and people from your child’s perspective. It will give an interesting and fresh feeling to your pictures. Winter white out: Ever taken a photo of the family ski trip and have the snow look grey in the prints? Taking photos in the snow is tricky. Check your digital camera for a snow or winter setting feature. Th is feature helps corrects the camera’s white balance and lowers the exposure value to avoid over-ex- posing the image. No picture is set in stone: Don’t be afraid to experiment with your camera’s diff erent features. Remember: you can always delete any unwanted images. Th at perfect photograph of your little ones enjoying the winter is just one click away. Christmas is a holiday reaped in cus- toms. Year in and year out, you dec- orate a Christmas tree, sip eggnog, and enjoy a candy cane beneath the mistle- toe. But do you have any idea how these customs came about? To fully appreciate a holiday, you should understand its roots. Th is guide will help you get to the bottom of this festive and sacred holiday. Candy canes: According to the National Confectioners Association, in the 17th cen- tury, the choirmaster at the Cologne Ca- thedral in Germany gave his young singers sugar sticks to keep them quiet during cer- emonies. In honor of the occasion, he had the candies bent into shepherds’ crooks. In 1847, a German-Swedish immigrant deco- rated a small blue spruce with paper orna- ments and candy canes. By the 1900s, the candy cane got its red and white stripes and peppermint fl avors. Th ey were mass produced by the 1950s, eliminating the la- borious task of making the treat, and their popularity spread. Christmas tree: Germans would decorate fi r trees, inside and out, with roses, apples and colored paper. Th e tradition hit England and America via the German immigrants in Pennsylvania in the 1800s. Of course, a Christmas tree isn’t complete without orna- ments. Decorating trees dates back to the Victorian times. Woolworths department store sold the fi rst manufactured Christmas tree, and the trend spread. Mistletoe:Th e Scandinavians thought of mistletoe as a peaceful and harmonious plant. And they linked Frigg, their goddess of love, with mistletoe. Th e combination of these two schools of thought brought about the custom of kissing under the mistletoe. Th ose who kissed beneath the mistletoe were thought to have happiness and good luck the next year. Poinsettias: America’s fi rst ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, is the namesake for this native Mexican plant which he brought to America in 1828. Th e plant was likely used by Mexican Franciscans in their 17th century Christmas celebrations. Mexicans thought the plants symbolized the Star of Bethlehem, leading to its as- sociation with Christmas. Stockings: A man was so sad over the death of his wife that he spent all his mon- ey. Unfortunately, this habit left his three daughters without money for wedding dow- ries. St. Nicholas wanted to help the poor girls’ cause, so he anonymously threw three small pouches of gold coins down the chim- ney of the their home. Th e coins landed in the stockings of the women who had hung them by the fi replace to dry. Popular Christmas symbols revealed 76 Harwood Ave. S. Ajax 843 King St. W. But what to do if your event is smaller in scale? Make the most of an intimate gathering by focusing in on the details you may have had to forego if you were opening your home to a large number of people. Th is is a perfect time to take out a special set of china, linen napkins and a lavish tablecloth. Allow the table to shine with a centerpiece brimming with fl owers and foli- age, or create a personalized centerpiece with your favorite antique urn or other collectible. Because you’ll be able to easily manage guests in one area of the house, you won’t have to wor- ry as much about damage to your fi ner items as you would if you were watching a crowd. Many times, hosts and hostesses are forced to compromise conversation opportunities when they have a full house — there just isn’t time for personalized interaction with every- one. However, when you have just a handful of guests, you can make the most of catching up on conversation. Make chatting over din- ner or drinks an integral part of the celebra- tion. You can also choose to engage in activities that would be cumbersome with a larger crowd, such as board games or even holiday caroling. Cooking for a crowd is much diff erent from cooking for a few people. Th e former often requires easy dishes that can be stretched or multiplied for the masses. In an intimate party, you can put culinary prowess to the test and wow guests with a special meal, such as lob- ster tails and fi let mignon. You can also devote a larger amount of your entertaining budget for expensive cuts of meat and fi ner wines. Th ere’s also the opportunity to have the meal catered, where the expense will be much less than if you had to feed a dozen or so guests. Because you’ll have more time in general, you can do up your house as a winter won- derland or holiday paradise. Some easy ways to impart a cozy and inviting look are to use bunches of evergreen bows (or artifi cial ever- green garland) on mantles, around doorways and wrapped on the banisters of staircases. Also, white lights complement just about any color scheme, so use them generously in the rooms in which you’ll be entertaining, along with touches of red from pomegranates, faux berries and poinsettias. Fill the home with in- viting scents and sounds by lighting vanilla- or spice-scented candles, and softly tuning the ra- dio to your favorite CD of holiday songs or a classical music station. Holiday entertaining for a few guests is the perfect opportunity to focus on the details that get overlooked when your house is fi lled to the brim with friends and family. Enjoy how you can interact more and relax while you entertain when you’re hosting just a few people. Divide dough into workable portions. Roll out one portion at a time. Dust rolling pin and rolling surface with flour so dough doesn’t stick. Cut into shapes. I prefer to use a snowflake cookie cutter or a star. Put one chocolate “rosebuds” in the centre of each cookie. Bake cookies on a cookie sheet for 8-9 minutes. Do not bake any longer as they will be overdone. They may not look cooked when they come out of the oven, but trust me, when cooled they will melt in your mouth. Allow the cookies to cool for 10 minutes on the cookie sheet placed on a cooling rack, while the next batch is baking. Lay out sheets of wax paper on a table or countertop. Transfer the cooled cookies with a spatula to the wax paper and allow them to further cool completely. Once all batches are finished and cooled, sift icing sugar over the tops to look like snow. I get to spend time with my family and cel- ebrate my 2nd birthday all at the same time. I have been a very, very good girl. I help Mommy and Dad- dy shut the dishwasher and I put my soother in the sink all by myself. I am going to make you some oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. I love them so I hope you do too. See you soon, Jamie Dear Santa, My name is Paige, I am eight years old. I am writing this also for my brother Jack- son, he is almost seventeen months old. Here is a list of things my brother would like for Christ- mas. A tricycle, bouncing Tig- ger, another wood puzzle(like the one he has already) and a plush Backyardigan. Here is a list of things I would like for Christmas. Two tickets for the High School Musical Concert, on January 2nd., an MP3 player, designers world game, and the game Sponge Bob Life. Me and brother hope you have a really great Christmas. Love Paige and Jackson Dear Santa, My name is Rebecca, I am 11 years old, and I would really like an MP3 player for Christmas. I also like getting clothes. Rebecca Dear Santa, Do you get cold in the north pole? Are the reindeers ready for Christmas? I would like to see you sometime but I al- ways have to go to sleep. I am going to make you some very special cookies. I hope you like them. I like lots of sprin- kles, do you? This year for Christmas I would like a prin- cess dress and shark boy and lava girl movie. I know I have lots of movies but I don’t have that one. Thank you Santa. Love Zoe Dear Santa, You can get me whatever you want for Christmas, but no more barbies. I have a lot. I like your presents. We are go- ing to leave you some cook- ies but you have to hurry so the dogs don’t get them. Love Raven Dear Santa, I know you’ve been watching me to make sure I have not been naughty and I want you to know I have been super good all year long. I help my mommy with my little sis- ter and I even feed my little puppy CoCo. You probably already know that I don’t like to do chores but I do try — being a little kid can be really hard work sometimes. If you were won- dering what I might like for Christmas, here’s a short list: 1. Hot Wheels Race Track 2. A Hummer RC Car 3. A RC bulldozer 4. A Wooly Mammoth and Sa- bre Tooth Tiger to match my other set. I know that’s a lot to ask but if you could fi nd the room in your sleigh for these things I would be so happy! Most of all, though, I hope that all the children of the world can have as wonderful a Christmas as I know I will. Hope you enjoy the low-fat cookies and soymilk. Love, Ethan Dear Santa, This will be my third Christ- mas and what I am looking forward to most is the snow. I love making snowangels and riding my brother’s Gator around in the snow. I have been a really good girl this year, I help my mommy clean up, I love to pretend vaccum and dust — I am a really good helper. I love princesses and fairies — no matter how much my mommy tries not to make me a girly girl — I just love that stuff. My room is pink and decorated with fair- ies everywhere. I hope you could find some of the Dis- ney Dancing Princesses stuff for me this Christmas. I love to play pretend. Also a little kitchen so I can play pretend restaurant with my brother would be so cool! Santa, thanks for listening. I hope you get this message. Love, Zoe Dear Santa, I know you are really busy getting ready for your big day, but I wanted to tell you that I’ve tried to be as good as I can all year so that I make it on your nice list. I know me and my brother are pretty lucky, but if you’re not too busy, can you please bring me the Pixle Chicks and a Pawphin this year for Christmas (and maybe a new computer game for my brother). I really love them. I promise to be good (and not to let my daddy eat your cookies this year!) Love always Elisabeth Dear Santa, This year for Christmas I would like something a little different. Usually you put treats and toys that are meant for little dogs in my stocking. I sometimes think you go to the wrong house. My neighbour behind me is a little dog. Maybe he’s get- ting the big stuff. This year could you put a Kong brand toy in my stocking (prefera- bly a football, so my momma can play too). No squeaky toys please, because they freak me out. Other than that I need lots of treats (preferably big biscuits cuz I’m a big boy). More importantly, I no longer shy away from an opportunity to have my picture taken.” Through private consultation, The Facial Place creates treatment plans that are as unique as each of its clients. For those who are new to such services, it can be daunting. “How do I know if someone is good…. who can I trust?” These are important questions that require due diligence. Industry experts suggest that you look for establishments that show stability. “Ask how long the spa has been in business, or how often their staff is re-trained. …and don’t be afraid to arrange for a tour prior to treatment. A business that is professional in “every sense” can only mean a high level of satisfaction for you.” MediSPA at The Facial Place is Medically Supervised and Managed by Registered Nurse & Laser Specialist, Chantal Ward. As a Cosmetics Tr ainer to Family Physicians and Dermatologists across the country, Chantal offers 13 years of cosmetics know-how! As Sam Be- ninato, nationally acclaimed home renovation expert and President of RENOCanada, says, “home improvement is not just about the house, it’s about you.” With over a thou- sand renovation projects un- der his belt, Beninato knows that bathrooms and kitchens are personal spaces and need to be exciting regardless of budget. “Our customers want more than installation, they want inspiration.” With the sudden infl ux of home improvement busi- nesses, the market is fl ooded with companies claiming they specialize in bathrooms for homes, condos and even basements, but consumers should do their homework. What this often means is a general contractor has only had exposure to that type of work.“At RENOCanada, we have the right experience. We’ve been renovating bath- rooms and kitchens for more than 15 years,” Beninato says. Beninato advises that cus- tomers should also be wary of the many “up-starts” claim- ing they have hundreds of satisfi ed clients, but only of- fer a sampling of their last 10 projects. These are the same contractors that make exag- gerated warranty promises on their work for a period of three to fi ve years, when they have only been in business for six months. “At RENOCa- nada, we offer a comprehen- sive fi ve-year warranty on all makeover projects. And we do this because we have been in the bathroom and kitchen makeover business for many years,” Beninato says. If you’re thinking of re- modeling, the RENOCanada process is simple. It begins with a free in-home consulta- tion during which one of their expert makeover specialists will visit your home to sur- vey your room and discuss your vision. They then take that information and measure it against current trends to develop a design specifi cally for you. Next, RENOCanada invites you to their Inspira- tion Centre where they pres- ent their recommendations and discuss further options. The lines of communication are open until you’re con- fi dent with the design you select to ideally suit your vi- sion and lifestyle. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 26, 2006 PAGE 31 Pdurhamregion.com By Stefanie Swinson Staff Writer DURHAM — The competition was intense and the noise at a fever-pitch in the Trafalgar Castle school gymnasium last Saturday after- noon, as the Durham Qualifying finals of the First Lego League (FLL) Robotics champion- ship drew to a climax. Featuring teams of students facing off in a bid for the best designed robot made of Lego, the event saw a team from the host school place well enough to advance to the provincial finals. Saturday was the final leg of the regional competition, the culmination of an eight- week project. In the end, a Trafalgar Grade 7 entry, Where’s Waldo, came second overall to a Grade 7 entry from Kingston’s Calvin Park Public School. Ten entries, including teams from Ajax and Port Perry, were competing for the title. “They are going against each other, two teams at a time to see how many missions they can get,” explained Olwen Sigsworth, event organizer. “It’s not a fight. It’s a competition to see how many missions they can accomplish in two and a half minutes.” As the day drew to a close, those teams eliminated still stuck around to cheer on their remaining opponents. The robots are first designed on the com- puter on a CD-ROM program called Robolab and are then programmed to complete mis- sions. “You can use a booklet that shows you how to make certain wheels, that actually turn, and you can follow instructions, or instead you can use your own imagination to build your own robot,” said Faith Chipman, a Grade 6 student at Trafalgar. The FLL program, normally an extracur- ricular activity, is actually part of Trafalgar’s curriculum, Faith said. FLL is an international program for students aged 9-14, created to excite and motivate children in science and technology. “I wanted to get involved because one day when I grow up I want to build robots and buildings, anything involving science, so I thought this would be a great start,” said Lloyd Pigeau, a Grade 8 student from Toronto’s Carl- ton Village Public School. Te ams were made up of approximately 10 students and two mentors. This year, more than 34,500 children in North America and 5,500 children from 11 countries internation- ally are participating in the FLL program. The top three schools, including Trafalgar’s entry, now move on to the provincial champi- onships being held Dec. 9 in Oakville. A mem- ber of Saturday’s first-place finishing Calvin Park team, however, was eyeing next year’s regional competition. RENOCanada™ (a new concept in home improvement) has evolved from one of Toronto’s best known plumbing busi- nesses -- The Plumbing Mart. They have updated and changed their identity to better represent their expertise and focus on quality home improvements. Specializing in Bathroom and Kitchen Makeovers, RENOCanada™ is a single source for homeowners who want to improve the quality of their life at home....without moving. Their unique range of services and experience makes renovation easy, practical and affordable. The new Inspiration Centres, currently being developed, will provide an exciting and educational environment that helps homeowners to visualize and plan their dreams. What has not changed is the com- pany’s commitment to great service and industry setting standards, like their fi ve year warranty backed by the most experi- enced renovation consultants and craftsmen in the business. For thousands of local area homeowners, it has always been the people and personal attention that set this company apart from other renovators. RENOCanada’s staff understand reno- vation from the customer’s perspective. They know that home improvement is not about the house, it’s about self improvement (Life- style), it’s personal. The company describes their primary customers as “discerning” homeowners. These are people that don’t necessarily have big budgets but who feel that Bathrooms and Kitchens need to be exciting regardless of budget. They have higher expectations; demanding seamless service from inspira- tion to installation and an overall experience that is hassle-free, educational and reward- ing. Discerning customers don’t want to be sold anything but want someone to act as an “editor” helping them to make choices that are right for them. They need to feel “in con- trol” and want a service provider that will empower them to get satisfaction. The showroom is only 15 minutes from anywhere in Ajax and Pickering. It’s a short drive west on Hwy 401, south on Mc- Cowan Rd. to Lawrence, go west two major intersections to Midland and then just one block north on the west side. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 26, 2006 PAGE 33 A/Pdurhamregion.com SPORTS sportsdurhamregion.com Ex-Panthers have big game against former teammates Fox, Hosmer shine in Newmarket Hurricanes’ 6-3 win over Pickering By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — Two former Pickering Panthers haunted their old team in a major way in New- market on Thursday night. The Panthers made a trip up Hwy. 404 north to play the Hur- ricanes for the first time since the blockbuster six-player trade in mid-October that brought goal- tender Brad Fogal, defenceman Kory Helowka and forward Greg Payne to Pickering in exchange for Panthers’ front-line forwards To dd Hosmer, Justin Fox and starting goaltender Marc Stuart. The former Panthers, on this occasion, rose up to help the Hurricanes break off a nine-game winless streak with a 6-3 victory over Pickering in OHA Ontar- io Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League action at the Ray Twinney Sports Complex. The Panthers were on home ice Friday to play the neighbour- ing Ajax Attack at the Pickering Recreation Complex. The result wasn’t available at press time Fri- day. Fox and Hosmer had a big say in the outcome of Thursday’s game, with Fox scoring twice and Hosmer adding a single. Only Stuart wasn’t a factor, serving as the backup to Newmarket starter Matt Milne, who kicked out 38 shots for the win. “They played really well,” says Panthers’ head coach Pat Curcio of Fox and Hosmer. “They were intense and had something to prove. I was happy for them, but I was disappointed for our hockey club.” More than facing their old teammates, the Panthers faced a confluence of factors that gave the Hurricanes plenty of reasons to come on like gangbusters. It was their first game under new head coach Brian Perrin, who took over from former bench boss Jim Wells Jr. The Hurricanes also welcomed back one of their high-scoring forwards, Ryan Burkholder, who played for the Eastern Canada team in the tier 2 all-star game against Western Canada recently. More than anything, though, Curcio says his Panthers (15-10-2-0, tied for third in South Conference standings) didn’t com- pete well enough to post a win against a focused N ewmar- ket squad (6-17-0-0) that sits in last place in the league’s North Con- ference standings. “We went into the game with high expectations and we had to be willing to pay the price to earn it, and we didn’t do that,” explains Curcio. “We didn’t deserve the two points and Newmarket did.” And, a lack of discipline hurt the team’s chances of getting back into the contest after trailing 3-2 after the second period. The fourth Newmarket goal, scored on the power play by Jonathan Pietramala midway through the third period, essentially snuffed out any Pickering comeback as- pirations. Curcio was miffed at his team’s reluctance to play disciplined hockey of late. All told, the Pan- thers chalked up 70 minutes in penalties, most of those coming in the final period. “It’s the old story, if you’re un- disciplined you can’t win hockey games in this league. We trailed 3-2 in the third and had an oppor- tunity to score and then we took a stupid penalty. Discipline wins hockey games and we weren’t disciplined. Discipline has hurt us. It’s upsetting.” The Panthers finish the week- end with a game in Toronto on Sunday against the North York Rangers. Game time is 3 p.m. SCORING SUMMARY Panthers at Newmarket Period 1 Newmarket - Todd Hosmer (John McCullough, Mike Martinelli) 11:16 Newmarket - Matthew Viola (K.J.
