The Ward 3 City Councillor in- troduced a motion at the Dec. 19 council meeting asking that the his- toric north Pickering home, as well as Ever Green Villa, be designated as heritage properties. “I don’t think a commitment to protect is enough,” he said. “With this motion we are seeking a desig- nation under the Ontario Heritage Act for these two properties.” Transport Canada, which owns the home, was looking to evict its occupants so the building could be demolished. Tullis Cottage was built in 1840 as a retirement residence by Reverend George Barclay, a leader during the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837 as well as Brougham’s first postmaster, a town warden and a school trustee. “There was hardly an aspect of Pickering’s life Barclay was not involved in,” said John Sabean, a member of Heritage Pickering and president of the Pickering Historical Society, who spoke at the meeting about the historic significance of both properties. Tullis Cottage, located at Brock and Seventh Concession roads, was expropriated by the federal govern- ment for an airport in 1972. Despite that it continues to be occupied by descendents of Mr. Barclay. The Transport Canada Heritage Wo rking Group has scored the property as a Group 1, which is de- fined as “a structure that must be preserved at any cost.” Mr. Sabean expressed support for council’s motion. “It’s time now for council to take the final step to have these two prop- erties designated heritage proper- ties,” he said. Laurie and Gary Barclay have lived in Tullis for about 20 years. They received their second eviction notice in three years last February, but Transport Canada revoked it last month and said it would pay to restore the home. The federal government, however, is not going to designate it a heritage property. At a recent Adult Protective Service As- sociation of Ontario client forum, hosted by the Region of Durham, people from across Ontario came together to share their hard- ships with each other and with Ernie Parsons, parliamentary assistant to the Ontario minis- ter of community and social services. “It’s pretty tough,” said Kevin Boudreau of Oshawa during the forum. On charts taped up around the room, par- ticipants listed some of their daily challeng- es as money to afford transit, healthy food, clothes and furniture. The impacts of their hurdles include hav- ing no social life, limited work options, and feeling depressed and like second-class citi- zens. For a better life, they want more money to afford housing and bills and obtain a sense of independence. “I learned things today, I really did because you were courageous enough to be open,” said Mr. Parsons. “Thank you for opening up your personal lives... I have learned things I hope will translate into a better life for you.” For some attending, the forum was an emotional experience as they discussed their challenges and the help they’ve received from their adult protective service workers. Joe and Perry Silliker from Newcastle are brothers and both developmentally chal- lenged. Since their mother went into a nurs- ing home, Perry has been left to care for Joe. “A t times I feel so frustrated,” said Perry. He said his brother tries to help himself, but runs into barriers. “But I can’t be his nurse,” said Perry. High costs of car repairs and hydro also make it hard. “I’d love to find a good job,” said Perry. Mr. Boudreau said more money to last the month would be nice. He said sometimes those living independently with develop- mental disabilities need friends or family to help them with money to get through that one last week of the month. He said his mom is schizophrenic and he was in a group home since age two, but thanks to his adult protec- tive service worker, he’s opened up to her and she’s helped him follow his dream. Kevin Gimbel from Port Perry has also had successes. He went to Durham College and received a certificate for dog grooming. But living in Port Perry, it can be hard to get around. “Transportation is bad in the Port Perry area because the GO schedule is terrible and there’s not enough affordable housing,” Mr. Gimbel said. “If it wasn’t for (APSAO), I’d be no place today,” said Alfred Gilbert of Oshawa. “There should be more funds to help people like us in our lives. Every day it’s a challenge for us.” Mark Grant, chairman of the APSAO and an adult protective services worker in Dur- ham, said sometimes the clients’ voices are lost because they have no families or group homes to advocate for them. By participating in the forum, those attend- ing were able to share their stories with Mr. Parsons and will also have their concerns and information compiled into a letter to be sent to Queen’s Park. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, DECEMBER 30, 2005 PAGE 3 A/P 334 Westney Rd., South, Ajax (Just south of Bayly on west side) (905) 683-1631 or 427-1969 Tune Up Your Snowblower Winter Special $59.95 (free no-clog coating) AJAX SMALL ENGINE REPAIR PAT’S RENT-ALL Call Head Office 905-509-5005 Blaisdale MONTESSORI School SPACES AVAILABLE IN AJAX & PICKERING PRE-TODDLER PROGRAM (12 mo.-18 mo.) Kenneth Wayne Symes, 36, of Whitby, will serve just a few more months after being given two for one credit for the four and a half months he’s been in custody since his arrest last summer, a source with Durham Regional Po- lice said. Mr. Symes, pastor at the Ajax Alliance Church, will also serve a three-year term of probation. The married father of a young child was busted in August after a sting operation in which a Toronto police of- ficer posing as a 12-year-old girl had a number of Internet chat room exchanges with a user who called himself “g aryneartoronto.” After a number of chats that became increasingly more sexual in nature the two made arrangements to meet in Toronto. When Mr. Symes showed up he was arrested by Toron- to police child exploitation unit officers. Police subsequently searched the man’s Whitby home and the church in Ajax. Mr. Symes was originally charged with one count of at- tempted luring and invitation to sexual touching. A second luring charge was laid after police here were contacted by authorities in the United States who made similar al- legations, the Toronto Star reported. The invitation to sexual touching charge was dropped when Mr. Symes entered his guilty plea, a police source said. Aj ax pastor sentenced to year in prison for luring Ever Green Villa, located just around the corner from Tullis on Brock Road, was boarded up several years ago. “It now lies empty and abandoned,” Mr. Sabean said. It was built by Mr. Barclay’s eldest son and it is in Group 2, but is expected to be re- evaluated to Group 1. It is a property of “substantial ar- chitectural merit” and was also the place where resi- dents met following their re- ceipt of expropriation letters. The airport protest group People Or Planes was born at that meeting. “We place a great deal of value on them and we wish to see them protected,” Mr. Sabean said. Council unanimously passed the motion. By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer AJAX — They may not have pinched the Grinch, but Durham police did make Christmas morning brighter for an Ajax family hit by a thief. Louise Riggi said she and her husband, Phil, were crestfallen when they dis- covered the majority of the gifts they’d bought for their young daughters had been stolen from the trunk of a car parked overnight in the driveway of their Woolf Cres- cent home. “I was stunned and bewil- dered,” Ms. Riggi said of the theft, discovered early Christ- mas morning. “I was so heartbroken because my daughter only asked for three things -- she’s 5.” A dejected Ms. Riggi called Durham Regional Police and reported the crime. An officer at 19 Division asked a few questions -- including the age of the children and what they’d lost in the theft -- then said an officer would come around and take a report. A call about an hour later let Ms. Riggi know police would soon be there. When she answered the door a short time later, she couldn’t believe her eyes. “There was this man standing there with gifts in his hands -- he made three trips back to the car.” Among the gifts brought to the home by Constable Troy Tudor was an Elmo doll for 18-month old Stella and the Play Dough requested by Ol- ivia, 5. The response by police at Ajax’s 19 Division left a lasting impression with Ms. Riggi. “I’ve always had a great deal of respect for au- thority and the law, but this just renews my faith in humanity,” she said. “I think it’s amazing that they would do this.” Ms. Riggi said her children each kept one of the toys brought by Const. Tudor; the others will be donated to the local women’s shelter. Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Louise Riggi and daughters Olivia and Stella awoke Christmas morning to find out that someone had broken into their car and stolen the presents they had in the trunk. They reported the crime to Durham Regional Police, so officers showed up at their door with gifts for their two kids. The family decided to donate some of the gifts to Herizon House in Ajax. ✦ A from page 1 Cops step up as family’s gifts stolen ‘A great deal of value’ placed on Pickering properties A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, DECEMBER 30, 2005 durhamregion.com EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR An up and down year for Durham For Durham Region, the year 2005 can be summed up in the words of the great Charles Dickens: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Those times, of course, relate to the fortunes of the region’s largest employer, General Motors. This past year saw the auto giant announce a spectacular $2.5-billion investment in the company and in university programs. The Beacon project was a clear indication of the value GM places on its efficient, high-quality Canadian plants. And then, of course, the other shoe dropped. Last month, General Motors announced massive world- wide layoffs in a bid to become more competitive with Japanese and German manufacturers. Even though Oshawa could boast of having some of the very best automotive plants in North America, the company decided it would close one of the three local plants in 2008 and remove a shift from another plant this coming year. The net loss is nearly 4,000 jobs with more losses to come among supplier facili- ties. No doubt, GM Canada will soldier on, and there is some hope that the 2008 plant closure could be forestalled by bringing a new product here. We can only hope. The region’s second largest employer, Ontario Power Generation, could well be the recipient of some good news in 2006. A recent energy report has been delivered to the Province suggesting nuclear power is a critical component in any future energy mix. With space for four more reactors at its Darlington site, OPG is perfectly placed to be central to any new nuclear construction. That means high-paying, long-term jobs for this region, though the results would still be years away. Elsewhere, across Durham, there was good news as con- struction continued apace and the residential boom we’ve enjoyed for the past 15-20 years continued to roll along. Economic growth is a big part of the picture in the eastern portion of the Greater Toronto Area and it won’t be slowing down anytime soon. We’ll also soon be heading to the polls to elect a new gov- ernment and the hope here is that at least as many people who voted 18 months ago will vote again. Turnout has been steadily declining in recent elections and it is dipping precipitously close to the sub 60 per cent mark. Elections are dearly cherished in many parts of the world. Let’s hope democracy becomes the winner here on Jan. 23. Amidst all the outrage, remember Olympics are just a game I t’s recently spawned endless de- bate and discussion. Editorials in national newspapers, even. What has? The federal election? The latest episode of disgusting gun vio- lence in Toronto? Well, those issues, too, but also the selection of the Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team. That the final roster of an Olympic hockey squad, with many candidates worthy of consideration, would gen- erate some sort of discussion -- mild controversy, even -- is understood and expected. What’s happened, though, is approaching ridiculously high lev- els. The Canadian Olympic Committee recently felt it had to engage in a lengthy conference call in an attempt to quell concerns -- notably the selec- tions of forwards Todd Bertuzzi, Dany Heatley and Shane Doan -- before ap- proving the roster selected by Wayne Gretzky and his committee. The hand-wringing over Bertuzzi is somewhat understandable, given he is now the owner of a forever-be- smirched reputation thanks to a cal- lous on-ice attack some 20 months ago during an NHL game in Vancou- ver that left a player with a broken neck. Heatley was behind the wheel of his car when it crashed and killed his teammate Dan Snyder in the fall of 2003. In Doan’s case, he recently faced accusations that he had uttered a slur during a game but has since been cleared of any wrongdoing. However harshly or lightly the first two were punished is not what’s at issue. The point is they have been judged in a court of law, a verdict ren- dered. As for Doan, innocent until prov- en guilty, right? Not for MP Denis Coderre, the former secretary of state for amateur sport. He managed to do something monumentally stupid by writing a letter to Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson, to protest Doan’s inclusion, demanding the player apologize (for something he was deemed not have done) or be kicked off the team. Look, this is where I come out. Ap- plying some sort of moral code to Olympic participation is one thing; but to do so arbitrarily, after appropri- ate bodies have done their own in- vestigations and meted out their own punishments, has less to do with mo- rality and more to do with piling on. It smacks of insincerity. So could everyone just relax? It is, after all, just a game. Paul Futhey is an editor with the Met- roland Durham Region Media Group. E-mail pfuthey@durhamregion.com. Union optimistic 2008 closure might be averted By Charles McGregor Special to the News Advertiser DURHAM — Following General Motors’s November announcement it will close all or part of a dozen factories in North America, includ- ing Oshawa’s Car Plant Two, indus- try experts, employees and suppli- ers are dealing with the fallout and gauging the future health of the in- dustry. The closures mean a future loss of 30,000 jobs. “Some of Detroit’s true believers still insist the industry’s downturn is only temporary,” says Micheline (Mickie) Maynard, Detroit bureau chief for the New York Times and auto industry analyst. “(Some be- lieve) as in the 1980s and 1990s, Detroit will stage a comeback once it fixes its short-term problems and launches new vehicles. Put simply, they are in a state of denial.” GM is losing market share -- down to 25 from 30 per cent in only a few years and from 50 per cent in the 1960s. And it’s losing money -- over $4 billion so far this year, and closing in on $5 billion. In mid-December, Standard and Poor downgraded GM’s ratings for the third time this year. Members of CAW Local 222 in Oshawa, and employees in supplier industries, directly or indirectly are expected to pay the price for GM’s late autumn restructuring efforts. Oshawa’s Plant One will lose its third shift in mid- summer, reducing the number of Buicks it builds. If Plant Two, which produces Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo models, closes perma- nently at the end of 2008, that will represent about 3,500 full-time jobs lost at GM with as many as 5,000 more among the suppliers. There could be more jobs lost as the effect of the closings ripple through the region’s auto parts and components markets. But CAW leaders feel there is a strong possibility the 2008 closing might be averted, saving the jobs of 2,500 GM workers and many more among the suppliers. Charlie Peel, Local 222’s finan- cial secretary, says the union has been running retirement seminars for workers who might be ready to pack it in at GM, leaving with their full pension, plus an incentive pack- age which includes a one-time buy- out payment between $50,000 and $70,000. These options don’t apply to the supplier force, even those approximate 2,600 who are CAW members, bound by individual col- lective agreements negotiated for each plant. Some plants are only a few years old, with no one eligible to retire. With respect to a potential new product for Plant Two, Mr. Peel said that, “When (GM of Canada presi- dent) Michael Grimaldi announced the closings in November, he also said that at the present time there is no product for the 2008 model year for Plant Two, but he said that could change. If it stays the way it is, that would shut it down. He said there’s 15 new models coming on line and if Oshawa gets one of those then obvi- ously it would change the situation.” CAW pres- ident Buzz Hargrove and Local 222 president Chris Buck- ley are both on record as saying they plan to pursue such an opportunity vigor- ously and thoroughly in the months ahead. “We’ll fight like hell for this,” says Mr. Hargrove. Oshawa’s Car Assembly Plant was ranked by J.D. Power and Associates in 2005 as highest in quality in North and South America. But when it came time to decide which plants would take a hit in last November’s restructuring announcement, Plant Two, w inner of the Gold Plant Qual- ity Award for the second time, was slated for closure. Plant One, the Silver Quality Award winner, lost a shift. It’s difficult to estimate the total jobs in jeopardy in Durham Region supplier companies like Lear, Du- pont, PPG, Johnson Controls, ASG and TDS Automotive, Gen-Auto and Mackie. It could be as high as 4,000 or more, with only about 2,600 em- ployees covered by CAW contracts. At Johnson Controls (JCI), CAW chairman Larry Williams said his company is going to give finding new business opportunities a shot. He said JCI will be only marginally affected by the loss of the third shift at Plant One, but that it’s a different matter with respect to Plant Two. “We have approximately 850 to 870 unionized employees in our plant and we would lose about 80 per cent of them.” He added, “It will be a couple of years before we see a major impact on our business and both parties will be working diligently between now and then to try and get some other work. “We believe there’s available work out there, and if we find some and there’s also a new product at Plant Two -- well, then we can hire more people.” Detroit, says Ms. Maynard, might need to change its business plan. “With its market share diminish- ing, Detroit’s old tactics of bom- barding the market with dozens of vehicles ... is simply not the answer.” She refers to “the importance of designing every vehicle so that it stands out from the crowd in some fashion,” and adds that, “Pretty much Buick’s entire line-up are all examples of unexceptional, generic cars that merit little attention.” The Automotive Journalists Asso- ciation of Canada appears to agree. In December, the association published its list of “Car of the Year” winners following its 2005 “Test- Fest” in which 60 vehicles from 18 manufacturers worldwide were put through several days of fierce testing at Shannonville Motorsport Park. Only one domestic nameplate -- Chrysler -- was among the top 10, with Honda placing three, Hyundai and BMW two and Mercedes one. Not to leave anyone out, there are also programs for pre-school children aged newborn to five, operating at the rec complex in the Creative Centre and Com- batants Room. Parent and tot programs are offered for toddlers from six months to three years. The focus is social interac- tion, exercise and fun. Numbers, shapes, colours and the alphabet as well as opportunities for emotion- al, social, physical, cogni- tive and creative growth are offered to all participants. Pickering’s winter programs help keep residents active PICKERING — Clarica Financial Services’ staff is helping to keep Pickering’s parks clean. The company was rec- ognized at a recent Pick- ering council meeting for its participation in the City’s Adopt a Park pro- gram. Clarica adopted Dunmoore Park, which is located in the southwest corner of the West Shore neighbourhood next to Petticoat Creek Conserva- tion Area. In 2004, the City revi- talized and reintroduced the Adopt a Park program. It was established to en- courage and provide op- portunities for commu- nity groups, schools, and businesses to partner with the City to enhance public parks. Partners commit to doing three cleanups per year and to report prob- lems such as vandalism. “C larica staff and man- agers are committed to the community and take our responsibility as a corpo- rate citizen seriously,” said Matt Pomeroy, Clarica’s Financial Centre manager. “We are involved in many charitable and volunteer initiatives throughout Durham and were pleased to be able to work with the City of Pickering through the Adopt a Park pro- gram.” Mayor Dave Ryan said the program is one way community-minded groups can make a positive contribution to the place they live or work. CPR training course for Pickering youth with heart By Jennifer Stone Staff Writer DURHAM — The rest of the win- ter is likely to be warmer than normal, but that doesn’t mean we should be putting away the winter coats, says a senior climatologist with Environment Canada. “For January, our forecast for Ontario, for the entire country, is showing warmer than normal con- ditions,” said David Phillips. “That doesn’t mean we won’t have those brutally cold days. It just means we will be statistically warmer.” If not for the latter stages of De- cember, that month would have been colder than normal, said Mr. Phillips. “Up until the 22nd of Decem- ber, temperatures were very much below normal,” he said, noting the cold had come on the heels of the “warmest six months on record.” With the final days of the month largely on the plus side, and indi- cations that it should remain so through New Year’s Day, tempera- tures for December should aver- age out, he said. We had more snow than usual in December, but less precipita- tion in general, since we had al- most no rain in the month, said Mr. Phillips. “The grand total precipitation was only about two-thirds what we would normally get,” he said. There’s also been a dearth of sunshine, said the climatologist. “The last time there was any significant sunshine was Dec. 18, so people who suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disorder) have an early start to that misery,” said Mr. Phillips. Initially, predictors showed De- cember, January, and February as being colder than normal, but in- dications have changed somewhat for the remainder of winter. One indictor is the amount of snow in Siberia in the late fall - - that there was less than normal could mean we will experience a somewhat warmer than normal winter, Mr. Phillips said. “It has been persistent, in the last 15 winters: 10 have been warmer, two have been near nor- mal, and three colder,” he said. “The odds seem to favour warmer winters ...When in doubt, go with what you’ve seen recently. “Winters just don’t seem to be what they used to be,” noted the climatologist. But, it’s all relative, he said. Win- ter is still likely to be chilly -- it’s just a matter of degree. “Don’t be expecting balmy, plus-18 degree temperatures,” said Mr. Phillips. The two kicked off the Winter Warmth Fund earlier this month. The fund pro- vides financial assistance to low-income families and individuals struggling to pay their heating bills. It started in 2004 in To ronto, but since then has expanded to other areas, including Durham Region. Resources for the annual program are contributed by Enbridge Gas Distribu- tion and are available to eligible En- bridge customers. “We’re proud to partner with Enbridge Gas Distribution to make this initiative possible,” said Edna Klazek, executive director of the United Way of Ajax-Pick- ering-Uxbridge. This year, in addition to providing fi- nancial aid, the program has expanded to ensure that eligible households also receive help improving the energy ef- ficiency of their residences. As part of the program for 2005-06, fund recipients who are homeowners will be offered a personal visit from an energy efficiency expert who can outfit them with energy-saving tools. These in- clude a free programmable thermostat, low-flow shower heads, pipe wrap and aerators for kitchen and bathrooms. Last year the program helped more than 650 households in Ontario. Families and individuals needing fi- nancial assistance to pay their bill can apply for assistance through Commu- nity Development Council Durham. I do not feel that a sufficient environmental assessment has been done to show that the negative impact of this airport would outweigh the benefits. If one accepts the statement that Pearson International airport will reach capacity in 2018, it would seem to make more sense to expropriate land near Pearson and increase its capacity, or implement a high-speed rail link between Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa, rather than start another project that has the potential to end up like another Mirabel airport. JEFF BROWNRIDGE Green Party Dobson promises an immediate stop to evictions I am opposed to construction of the Pickering airport. If elected in a Conservative govern- ment, I will work with my colleagues to put an immediate stop to the shameful evictions and demolitions on airport land and the destruc- tion of this community. I support the position of public opposition groups calling for a pub- lic investigation of bureaucrats and politicians at the federal departments involved for their mishandling of the Public Trust on these lands, comprising over 300 homes and 18,600 acres of prime farmland. Three hostile uses conspire against airport, says Dale The Pickering airport could well be the next Mirabel. Moreover, it is badly situated adjacent to parkland and close to a nuclear station. The three uses are hostile to each other. As an MP, I will not only work to stop the airport by insist- ing that a proper environmental assessment be done as well as a nuclear safety review, but I would also work to return the Greater Toronto Airports Authority to full public control so that decisions like this will not recur. McTeague kept watch for proper federal protocols When I was MP for the lands, any Transport Canada decision to decommission a house was predicated on: health and safety risks to the oc- cupants; the economic viability in repairing the house to standards; or it having local or national historical significance. I ensured Transport Cana- da abided by this protocol. When the City of Pick- ering found out that Brougham fire hall contained toxic mould, the City closed the facility. They would certainly be liable, if not irresponsible, to expose its employees to such dangers – just as the federal government would be. Nonetheless, legal actions had to be undertaken by some tenants. What will you do to prevent evictions, demolitions and the destruction of community on the airport lands? Watch upcoming editions for more questions and answers. Education, training From the NDP website at www. ndp.ca: Canadians are hard-working people who know our prosperity is fuelled by educating and training young people. The Liberals say that, too, but their actions say something else. Liberal majority governments cut billions from education transfers. Tu ition fees and student debt have soared under the Liberals, and many families now find college and university beyond their reach. At the same time, workers can’t access the skills training they need for a changing job market. Last election, the Liberals prom- ised progress for students. But in 2005, they tabled another budget with billions in corporate tax cuts they hadn’t promised — and noth- ing to make education more afford- able. Enough is enough. With each Question and Answer with candidates, we’ll print a different party’s take on a key issues of the election campaign. ‘The people up there (living on the lands) knew what was going to happen eventually and now it’s happened, so it’s too late.’ ‘The detriment it’s going to do to this area... Whose homes are those jets going to be f lying over? It might be farmland to the north- west, but there’s homes to the south.’ ‘Have the people vote for it. Have a referen- dum or whatever you want to call it. Go by what the people say.’ ‘There definitely should be something done to prevent the evictions; it’s terrible the ones they’ve done al- ready. It’s so pointless evicting people.’ Vincent Oldfin Jim Townshend Jennie Cousins We asked Pickering residents: What should the federal government do to prevent evictions, demolitions and the destruction of community on the airport lands? I’ve met regularly with the residents of north Picker- ing and with the transport minister and his staff to seek a solution. So far, we’ve achieved several key results: 1) A review of the need for an airport that will consider the larger context of transpor- tation in southern Ontario; 2) An agreement to save the historic Tullis Cottage; 3) An informal moratorium on demolitions and evictions until there is a fair and transparent process in place to deal with properties that cannot be affordably maintained. MARK HOLLAND Liberal Modeste wants airport project fully cancelled I will push for the full cancellation of the Pickering airport project. Considering the eco- nomic, environmental and national security is- sues raised by this proposal, it’s hard to under- stand why the project has even progressed to this stage. While the current decisions on historical homes and the movement towards a fair and open policy to review the viability of homes in the affected area are steps in the right direction, none of these properties will truly be safe until the airport issue is finally closed for good.KEVIN MODESTE NDP Ko rus will battle to keep proposal from moving on The question of the proposed Pickering airport is a critical one, and considering the three-decades- old battle over this matter, there are obviously strong feelings on both sides of the issue. I believe that building this airport would not be in the best interests of Ajax-Pickering, and I will fight to ensure that this proposal does not move forward. The land can be put to far greater use, and I do not believe that an airport on this land would alleviate a real need. Thus I would do everything I could to prevent the airport from being built. Ministerial intervention a must for lands, says Thomas After 13 years of Liberal MP inaction on this issue and over a hundred housing demolitions, it will be essential that the minister order a complete halt to the current process. While the future of the airport is in question, the government should act like a responsible landowner and maintain the properties and allow those who wish to reside in their homes the dignity to do so in peace. A copy of it is available at www. region.durham.on.ca by clicking the link for ‘Election and Temporary Ad- vertising Signs on Regional Roads’ under the highlights section of the home page. Any signs in contravention of the bylaw will be taken down without no- tice and the owner billed for all costs incurred, a minimum of $50. Those unclaimed within 15 days may be de- stroyed. Scheduled regional maintenance required on boulevards will continue around standing signs, but any that fall down will be moved and left in the same vicinity. All signs also have to be removed within 48 hours after the election. I have noticed that along with my other bodily changes, my feet and legs are also affected. What other changes might I expect and how can I keep myself more comfort- able? As you begin to gain weight due to pregnancy the added stresses placed on the foot are most noticeable as you approach your delivery date. An important hormone you are producing during the pregnancy is relaxin. This enables your ligaments to be more lax so that they can expand, not just around the stomach and pelvic area for the fetus, but also in the foot. The foot will lengthen and widen during the pregnancy allowing for a greater surface area to carry the additional weight. After delivering, in most cases, the foot will revert back to normal, although some of my patients complain that their foot has remained at least half to a full size Ronald J. Klein B.Sc., D.P.M. The best bit of advice I can give you is to wear good supportive shoes. These will support the arch, shock absorb dur- ing the latter months and accommodate the swollen foot by loosening the laces. If you were used to wearing higher heeled shoes before the pregnancy and now you are wearing fl ats, you may notice some calf muscle strain, either at its insertion behind the knee or at the achilles tendon. Pressure of the fetus in the pelvic area where the veins lead back to the heart, may cause a back up of blood in these veins. This can lead to varicose veins and swelling of the foot and legs. It is most important to keep your legs elevated. Also a good pair of properly fi tted, but not too tight, support hose will control the swelling. If you were a pronator before your pregnancy, the in- creased laxity and fl atter arch will lead to hyperpronation. I cannot over empha- size the importance of a good supportive shoe. The increased incidence of planter warts with pregnan- cy, especially in the fi rst three months is noted as well as an increase in foot per- spiration and corre- sponding odour. I always try to encourage my pa- tients to avoid foot problems before they manifest themselves, however, having sore feet is a small price to pay for the wondrous miracle of having a child. Espe- cially when most of the foot and leg prob- lems will revert back to normal within the month or two after delivery. The two Courtice teens are head- ing to Montreal in January for the screening of their short film, Dig- nity, Euthanasia in Canada. It’s being screened Jan. 14 and 17 at the Cinema du Parc, one of eight of the best films from the Young Cuts Film Festival held in Toronto this past summer. Nicholas, 17, said he’s quite proud of the film he and Thomas, also 17, made. It started out as a school project for his law course. Needing help, Nick turned to Thomas whom he describes as a “guru” of filmmak- ing, explaining Thomas has made several films outside of school. Nicholas picked the topic partly because he’d heard the debates about it many times from his par- ents -- his dad is a veterinarian and his mother a nurse. He developed his own opinion and decided to make the film about it. Originally, he and Thomas planned to interview people at random, collecting their opinions about euthanasia and expecting to take a lighter look at the seri- ous topic. But, in their interviews, they ran across people who were quite aware of euthanasia and had watched as family members died slowly and painfully. The two young people changed the tone of their film, starting out with a few lighter comments but concentrating on the personal stories they discovered. They also taped some interviews with pa- tients at a dialysis unit of a hospital, talking to them about their reliance on machines to keep them alive. The film ends with the producers’ realization that euthanasia isn’t something patients want, “it’s the families because they’re the ones watching a living being withering away,” Nick said. “We had to mature, that’s for sure,” Nicholas said simply of the process of making the film. “We realized we could do better than we had originally planned. We took a long time editing it.” “We went out looking for a joke, for class,” said Thomas. “After hear- ing some stories of people, we kind of changed our perspective. We made it a little more serious.” Once their film was viewed, they were advised to enter it into film competitions and so entered the Yo ung Cuts contest. Dignity was chosen to be screened and now has been picked up by the Montreal cinema as one of the best of Young Cuts. Nicholas says all this attention is “a pleasant surprise” for a school project. Nick is aiming at a career in law while Thomas is applying to film schools. Both attend Trinity College School in Port Hope. Their film will be shown at a film festival at their school in 2006. They are also planning a new film which they intend to enter in the National Film Board’s Make Shorts Not War competition. Documentary on euthanasia brings acclaim for young Durham producers Walter Passarella/ News Advertiser photo Nicholas Topolie and Thomas Davis have produced a movie on euthanasia. The film has been chosen to appear at the Young Cuts Film Festival in Montreal in January. SPORTS sportsdurhamregion.com Mayne on the r un for the f inal time Pickering athlete ends cross-country season with conference title, national appearance for Mocs PICKERING – With goals in his senior year to win a conference title and run on the national stage, Pickering’s Ian Mayne rose to the challenges. The student athlete for the University of Tennessee at Chat- tanooga (UTC) Mocs has started training for the indoor track and field season after what can only be described as an exceptional cross- country season. The campaign included an individual Southern Conference title and an outstand- ing regional meet that propelled him to his longtime goal of com- peting for UTC at the NCAA cham- pionships. “Ever since I stepped on the campus of UTC it has a been a dream of mine to qualify,” says Mayne in an e-mail to the News Advertiser. He acknowledged it was a tall order at the NCAA South Region- als in Gainesville, Fla. to qualify for nationals, needing to be one of the top two teams or the next fastest four individuals to advance. “I knew I had to run the race of my life to qualify. In recent years a lot of the bigger schools such as Florida State, Florida, Alabama and South Alabama have brought in foreign talent, which has made the region incredibly competi- tive.” Needing to run well, the St. Mary Catholic Secondary School graduate put it all together to fin- ish as the fourth individual (10th overall). At the NCAA cross-county championships in Terre Haute, In- diana, Mayne placed 220th. He ex- pected a better performance, but breathing problems put him well back. “I got a stitch in my side and it prevented me from being able to breathe properly. Otherwise, I enjoyed the experience,” he says. But, mostly, Mayne noted the competition and the atmosphere at the NCAA championships were unlike anything he’s experienced before. “It was unbelievable,” he ex- plained. “It was a level of competi- tion that I have never been exposed to in my life. The atmosphere at the race was crazy. They estimated that over 6,000 people attended the event and every part of the course was lined with screaming fans.” As captain of the Mocs cross- country team, Mayne notes he needed to step up to provide lead- ership to a young team, consisting mainly of freshmen. He became the fifth UTC cross-country ath- lete to win an individual Southern Conference title, taking the crown at the SoCon championships in Statesboro, Georgia. “Winning the Southern Con- ference was very important,” says Mayne. “UTC has a very rich histo- ry of SoCon champions with Ryan Kendall (a Pine Ridge Secondary School grad) winning in 2000. Steven Kocsis (another Canadian, from Princeton, Ont) won the last two years and graduated in May.” Mayne points out his strict train- ing regimen in the summer, where he ran more than 160 kilometres per week, was chiefly responsible for his solid performance this sea- son. In addition to attending nation- als and the SoCon championships, Mayne also captured the Mocs Home Opener event, finishing first in 15:12, a 22-second improve- ment from the previous year. He also won the UTC Invitational, was third at the Auburn Invitational and fourth in the Greater Louis- ville Classic. The fine cross-country season netted Mayne several high-profile awards, including being named an NCAA Academic All-American last August. He was also named the Southern Conference runner of the year and was the SoCon runner of the month for last Sep- tember and November. He was also a three-time SoCon runner of the week. As for the indoor season, Mayne hopes to qualify for nationals in the 3,000-metre steeplechase. At UTC, he finished the calen- dar year with a 4.0 grade-point average and an overall GPA of 3.86. After graduation in May, Mayne plans to apply to medical schools in Ontario and Ireland. Submitted photo Ian Mayne’s senior year of cross-country running at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was an exceptional one. The Pickering native picked up an individual Southern Conference title and was able to compete for his school at the NCAA championships. He is currently turning his attention to the indoor track and field season, where he hopes to qualify for the national championships in the 3,000 metre steeplechase. ‘I knew I had to run the race of my life to qualify. In recent years a lot of the bigger schools such as Florida State, Florida, Alabama and South Alabama have brought in foreign talent, which has made the region incredibly competitive.’ — Ian Mayne NEXT WEEKEND It’s a home-and-home series between the Pickering Panthers and Ajax Attack. Happy New Year Remembering you as a New Year unfolds Jamil Elawar Missing you, loving you forever, you will never be forgotten as a devoted Husband, Dad and Grandfather... every second of the day. Another year is passing and we still can’t believe that you are not around us. We miss the word “Dad”, we miss our “Best Friend”..your advice, wisdom, love, intelligence and your direction to us in life. We will never forget what you taught us. To love one another, to take care of Mom, take care of brothers and sisters, to protect and respect one another, rich or poor, young or old, You always use to tell us family comes first in life, like a chain that will never be allowed to break. We will always carry on in life, using your advice. Your ethical way of dealing with hard work, the struggles, and sacrifices for your family, to make sure they were taken care of.. I think if you could see us from up above, you would be very proud of the way we are carrying out your wishes, of all that you taught us. Thank you for all the love, the respect and care you have always shown us and taught us to be.
