The News Advertiser has learned that the building will be located at Mary and Bond streets, adding an- other new project to the growing list of downtown revitalization efforts. Oshawa MPP Jerry Ouellette wasn’t entirely surprised by the news, saying it has been years in the making. “We’ve been expecting this... Os- hawa has been sitting in the back- ground for so long, it’s about time,” Mr. Ouellette said. “This will have a very positive impact on the city, we’ll have short- term construction jobs and long- term employment and so many more people in the downtown area.” While a smiling Mayor John Gray would only confirm that Minister of Infrastructure Renewal David Ca- plan will be in Oshawa for an im- portant announcement Thursday, Whitby Mayor Marcel Brunelle was quick to express disappointment that his municipality was not cho- sen for the site. “I think it’s sad that after 155 years, or something like that, Whit- by’s losing it,” he said, indicating that the Province went with Osha- wa only because the city could offer free land for the site. “They wanted us to give them free land. I think it’s a sad day -- and I don’t want to be political about this -- when we get around to that kind of game 239 Station Street, Ajax 905-686-2445 WHY MOVE IMPROVE ? Pickering gets into marriage business PICKERING — Planning a spring wedding? How about the gazebo in Esplanade Park? Pickering executive committee voted at the Dec. 12 meeting to accept a staff report and recom- mendation regarding civil mar- riages being performed by the City. A bylaw is going to council at the Monday, Dec. 20 meeting for the City to officially “opt in” to the service. Staff recommends the City perform the service for a fee of $250, which does not include the $100 cost of a marriage licence. It is recommended the service be performed Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in either the council chambers or in the gazebo (weather permitting). It is suggested the service start March 1. The recommendation stems from the Province making changes in September 2004 to regulations under the Marriage Act authorizing municipal clerks and deputy clerks to perform civil marriages. Previously, only judges and justices of the peace were allowed to solemnize civil marriages. But they’ve become busier over the years with court-related duties, reducing access to the civil mar- riage service. Staff will monitor the first six months of the service and report back to council. PICKERING — Because December isn’t just all about Christmas, the City of Picker- ing is helping residents learn about all celebrations this month. The City and the Pickering Advisory Committee on Race Relations and Equity are put- ting up displays in the Civic Complex foyer to create aware- ness of Hanukkah and Kwanza, as well as Christmas. In addition to the displays, which are up all month, at the Monday, Dec. 19 council meet- ing Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles, chairman of the advisory committee, is going to speak about all the celebra- tions to help bring awareness to the community. The public is welcome to attend to learn more about the various cultural days celebrat- ed in December. The council meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. The Pickering Civic Complex is at 1 The Es- planade. News of the new courthouse was welcomed by Durham Crown Attorney John Scott, who said the move for a central location has been on the agenda for more than a decade. “I’m very pleased we’ve got an announcement on a consolidated courthouse,” Mr. Scott said. “It will make it much easier for all mem- bers of the community.” Lawyers, judges, court employees and members of the public have for years been shuttling between mul- tiple locations. The various court- houses and courtrooms can create confusion for the public and logis- tical issues for court staff, Mr. Scott said. “It will be a great advan- tage to be in one place,” he said. Mr. Scott, who expects the new courthouse will incor- porate of- fices for the Crown attor- ney, added the new building will likely result in costs savings. “The rent we pay on all these lo- cations is very significant,” he said. Once the Province settles on a design, it is anticipated that con- struction will begin in October 2006 and wrap up in the winter of 2008- 09. The 35,000 square-foot consol- idated courthouse will bring the seven courts currently scattered across Durham under one roof, housing 33 courtrooms, five mo- tions rooms and related justice ser- vices. — with files from Jeff Mitchell PICKERING — The Pickering Ro- tary club presents a shocking energy session Dec. 20. I see and I remember... I do and I understand” -E.H. KNOWLEDGE WITH UNDERSTANDING 2005 Award Winner Parents of struggling readers have access to critical information today that was unavailable a decade ago. Recent initiatives by the American government have led to a flood of funding for research in the area of reading instruction. This research has identified key factors that help struggling students learn to read more easily. Specifically, it has shown us that phonemic, individualized, and systematic language instruction is the best style of teaching for strug- gling readers. The National Reading Panel and the International Dyslexia Association have both concluded that systematic, phonemic instruction pro- duces the greatest benefit to children having difficulty learning to read. Phonemic instruction refers to the teaching of the sounds that correspond to individual letters or groups of letters. For example, a has a consistent sound in the words cat, tap, and napkin, and ee has a consistent sound in the word keep, steep, and free. Knowing these letter-sound correspondences (along with syllabication rules and affixation), a child can learn to decode words intelligently rather than resorting to guessing or trying to memorize the half a million words in the English language. Individualized instruction allows for the child to learn each language ele- ment to mastery before continuing to the next letter-sound correspondence. Children who have difficulty learning to read need repeated practice with letter-sound correspondences in both spelling and reading activities. Recent research has suggested that they may need 100 times more exposure than a non-struggling reader to master each skill. Individualized instruction provides the child the opportunity for as much repetition as required for their individual learning. Systematic instruction introduces the elements of language in a logical, methodical manner. Material needs to be presented step-by-step and needs to move from simple to complex. Reading and spelling are taught in tandem, so both necessary skills develop together. If your child is having difficulties learning to read or is falling behind their classmates, the proper instruction can help them. They need remedial instruc- tion from a qualified teacher who is experienced in working with children with reading disabilities and uses the above principles. Is your child a struggling reader? Kira Hensley is a remedial reading teacher to students with reading difficulties and disabilities in the Durham Region. For more information call Kira’s Reading Clinic, located in Ajax, at 416-616-2504 (Ajax) or go online to www.hensley.ca. A.J. Cancer care centre reopens By Jillian Follert Staff Writer DURHAM — Colleen MacDermaid stands in the centre of the room, taking it all in with an approving smile. Heavy red curtains blanket the tall windows, and cozy overstuffed couches beckon guests to come sit in front of the fireplace. Above the hearth, a wreath glit- ters with tiny gold lights and an elegant Christmas tree stands in the corner near tables laden with candles and bowls of candy. “The old house was small and cozy, we were worried the new addition wouldn’t feel the same way,” she muses. “But it’s beautiful, this is a place people can feel at home.” Ms. MacDermaid has been volunteer- ing at Hearth Place Cancer Support Cen- tre in Oshawa since it opened. She was among dozens of volunteers on hand recently to celebrate the grand opening of the centre’s new 6,000-square-foot ad- dition. As well as the cozy new main room, Hearth Place now boasts extra program rooms, a library, kitchen, wig boutique, lecture hall, exercise room, children’s room and volunteer driver lounge. “The driver lounge is important, be- fore when people dropped someone off for treatment they had nowhere to go, they would wander the mall for hours,” said volunteer Jeanette McCrae. “Now they have somewhere nice to relax.” The expansion and renovation proj- ect was completed thanks to the Dur- ham Region Home Builder’s Association (DRHBA), which represents 150 local companies ranging from developers to contractors. Last February, the DRHBA launched its Build Hope — Dig Deep for Hearth Place campaign, encouraging members to donate materials, labour and funds to help improve the centre. Hearth Place contributed with a direct mail fundrais- ing initiative. Construction on the $500,000 project began in May and wrapped up this fall. Staff and volunteers moved into the new building on Nov. 10. “This is such an exciting day for us,” said Hearth Place executive director An- drea Shaw. “It’s not every day that a small charity like us is handed a new 6,000- square-foot building mortgage-free.” Ms. Shaw noted that cancer diagnoses are expected to increase by 61 per cent over the next 10 years and said the new facility will ensure than Hearth Place is able to keep up with demand for ser- vices. Opened in 1997, Hearth Place provides a welcoming place for cancer patients and their families to receive support and participate in a range of programs. Its 700 members benefit from lecture series, support groups and classes like tai chi, yoga, art therapy and journalling. In actual fact, the responsibility for having an election now can be laid squarely on Paul Martin’s shoulders. It was he who called an unnecessary snap election in order to trip up the new Conservative Party, although he could have stayed in power at least one more year. Well, it backfired on him and he ended up with a minority. Then Mr. Martin was given the choice of having an election in February, but that did not suit him, so here we are having one in January instead. This is just one more reason why we should have fixed election terms. That way people can be prepared, and the government can get down to the business of actually running the country and making concrete plans, instead of playing games with our country and our money. One thing all political parties should learn is that, once they are elected, no matter whether they are the majority, mi- nority or opposition, they are all part of the government and need to put aside their partisan wrangling and grandstanding as much as possible to be able to work together for the good of the country and the people. Renate Roy Ajax D efenceless individuals recently turned into a potentially power- ful group against violence. More than 100 people of various ages and races arrived at a Pickering community forum to share stories that should alarm Durham residents. Chaired by Pickering councillors and featuring representatives from various community sectors, the forum was the first for the new Communities Against Violence Everywhere (CAVE) group. Through it, residents were able to hear solution suggestions and share their own experiences and thoughts on the growing problem. “It’s actually getting scary to be out- side at night because you don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Matthew Manley, a 20-year-old youth co-ordina- tor for the City of Pickering. Judging by the forum’s attendance, he’s not the only one looking over his shoulder. Nor is Pickering the only mu- nicipality in Durham where residents are being followed by the shadow of fear caused by community crime. In November alone, Durham Re- gional Police reported at least a dozen serious incidents where teenagers were charged. The accused are as young as 13, and the incidents span Durham from west to east and south to north. From a Courtice home invasion, to a Port Perry car chase, Ajax and Picker- ing stabbings and gun charges in Os- hawa -- no community is free of the stain. Although youths are not the only culprits of violent behaviour, it’s more troublesome when they get involved in unlawful activity because they are still the responsibility of adults. It feels like there has been a change in the attitude of youth over the last 10 years. Maybe it’s rap music and video games, but maybe it’s lack of community and family life. With both parents usual- ly working, maybe the rules at home are being bent way more than they should be and some teenagers are receiving too much independence when they’re not yet responsible enough to make the right decisions or choose the best of friends. Someone once said teenagers need a balance of adult and children’s activities in their lives because they are a bit of both. It is the responsibility of adults to help lead youth down the proper path -- be it by laying down the law or comple- menting a teenager for doing something well. The forum allowed teenagers, parents and those who are just interested in making the community a better place to live, to come together and start the process of finding a solution. To wns, cities need strong planning role The decision by the Province to strengthen the role of local councils at the expense of the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) is certainly a win for democracy -- but is it the best move for planning across the province? It can be, but only with a balanced set of policies and in- structions will reforms outlined by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing last Monday have any real impact. Local councils have screamed for years they feel hand- cuffed by the power of non-elected OMB judges to overturn decisions councillors have made as elected representatives. Indeed, the OMB’s role should really be to only correct a decision made by any council which: 1) Contradicts the municipality’s published official plan; 2) Contradicts the Ontario Municipal Act or Ontario Mu- nicipal Planning Act; 3) Is illegal under Ontario property law. However, that has not been the manner in which the OMB has acted over the past few decades. Municipalities, after long debate and after making a democratic decision in full view of the public and press, have seen their decisions over- turned upon the whim of a non-elected OMB tribunal. Not only has the final OMB decision been at odds with what mu- nicipal representatives have decided, it has also been a very costly process for municipalities to go to the OMB armed with lawyers and documents to defend their decision against developers upset at the municipality’s verdict. Part of the problem has been that sometimes planning decisions have been made with only NIMBY (not in my backyard) concerns in mind. A number of councillors, fear- ful of voter backlash at the polls, may have turned down a reasonable application from a developer for strictly political reasons. Such short-term decision-making does not serve the long-term interests of the municipality and should result in an OMB hearing, where the municipality is in violation of its municipal plan or Ontario law. With the Province having established Greenbelt and Places to Grow legislation, both of which are meant to stem the tide of urban sprawl, the planning process should be more streamlined. In conjunction with a fair appeals process at the OMB, citizens and councillors should have a much bet- ter idea in future about where planning will go in their local municipality. Yanch OSHAWA 122 Albert St. 905-721-7506 AJAX 50 Commercial Ave. 905-619-1473 Province believes s almonella outbreak is now over DURHAM — A recent salmonella outbreak linked to consumption of bean sprouts appears to be over, On- tario’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Sheela Basrur announced Thurs- day. Many varieties of sprouts have been associated with serious foodborne in- fections in Canada and other coun- tries, and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is advising the pub- lic that sprouts are rarely considered “risk-free.” “Individuals who are at risk of seri- ous illness from foodborne infections, such as the elderly, people with weak immune systems and young children, should not eat any type of sprouts. Other individuals can reduce their risk of illness by avoiding raw sprouts,” said Dr. Basrur. Since Oct. 1, 2005, 648 cases of sal- monella have been reported across Ontario. An order issued by Toronto Public Health on Nov. 25 against a Toronto bean sprout producer to stop distribu- tion of sprouts has been lifted. The Ministry of Health and Long- Te rm Care will continue to monitor for salmonella cases and compile data from this outbreak. The Ministry is also working with local public health units, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Public Health Agency of Canada to inform bean sprout dis- tributors of compliance requirements and proper food safety techniques. Salmonella can contaminate raw fruits and vegetables that have been in contact with unclean water, animal manure, or an infected food handler. Symptoms of Salmonella infection in- clude fever, headache, diarrhea, stom- ach cramps, nausea and sometimes vomiting. Symptoms usually occur 12 to 36 hours after eating contaminated food or water. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, DECEMBER 18, 2005 PAGE 9 A/P Selection will vary by store. The del- egation was well received and council decided to look into the matter. On a cold damp Nov. 22, 1946 at 2:30 p.m., many Rouge residents turned out to witness the unveiling of ‘The War Memorial’ at the corner of the First Con- cession and Altona Road. The monu- ment was placed there in memory of the young men of the school section who did not come home. It was to stand “as a testimony and tribute to their memory and for the price they paid for Peace”. Mr. Parkinson, a veteran of the First Wo rld War, placed a huge wreath, sup- plied by Mr. McEchnie, at the monument after Col. Rev. Sidney Lambert, Padre of Christie Street Hospital, unveiled the memorial. Reeve Blake Annis stated that he was glad to see the new picturesque corner. Mr. C.E. Morley, president of the Horticultural Society, indicated that he was pleased at the willingness of the society to maintain the corner and plant trees and flowers to keep it beautiful. Mr. W.H. Moore spoke a few words on behalf of the School Section. Inscribed on the War Memorial’s plaque are the words “Semper Fidelis – To the memory of those from this school section who served in the armed forces 1939 to 1945, and to honour the fallen.” In June 2005 this monument was moved to stand beside the cenotaph at the City of Pickering Civic Complex. In partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion, the City of Pickering relocated this memorial from Sheppard Avenue (First Concession) and Altona Road, so it would have a higher profile. It was placed in its new home in time for the Ju ne 5 D-Day Parade at the Civic Com- plex. This article and the photo are cour- tesy Pickering Public Library local his- tory staff. Items appear on the third Sunday of each month. For more in- formation, visit www.pada.ca, e-mail localhistory@picnet.org, or call 905-831- 6265. The War Memorial was unveiled in 1946 to honour the memory of the men from the school section who did not return from the war. The story was circulating at an annual ‘Bid Euchre’ Christmas potluck lunch on Monday at the South Pickering Seniors’ Club. Greed, political correctness now overshadowing the holidays T he holiday season is supposed to be an event where families can re- joice in the presence of each other and enjoy the quality time they get to spend review- ing the undertakings of the past year. Christmas is about celebrating religion and, in some cases, remembering the birth of Christ and celebrating his life. However, in the past few decades a new meaning of Christmas has infiltrated our society -- materialism. Kids are giving their parents lengthy Christmas gift lists that basically tell what over-priced toys they’d like to ensure their Christmas is “the best ever.” I personally have never given my parents a list for Christ- mas, and hopefully my kids w ill do the same. Although many people say ‘Christmas is not about the gifts, it’s about time spent with family’ we sure contradict ourselves. What are we teaching kids when we automatically pur- chase the gifts they request? Do they understand that it is not about the gifts, but the thought behind it that mat- ters? No. They merely ask and they receive. We get so stressed out and worried about making Christ- mas fashionable so we can make a good impression on friends and family when they come over for the big holi- day dinner. Everything has to be perfectly presented. But it’s not about the presenta- tion, it’s about the time we spend with our families, right? I suppose that’s why women all over America keenly watch as Oprah and her chosen guests tell us how to make our Christmas the finest it can be; all you need is a fancy recipe for low-fat no-cal lactose-free fudge. Delicious! Now you can celebrate the holidays and still be wary of the weight you’ve worked all year to keep off. Also, let us not forget to make sure the centerpiece match- es the dishes. Nobody wants their Christmas party to look incomplete. Why is it that many schools are encouraging students to say ‘Happy Holidays’ rather than ‘Merry Christmas’ or ‘Happy Hanukkah?’ Are we not allowed to express greet- ings with our religious holi- days embedded in the phrase? The education system is en- couraging students to become so multicultural that we are not allowed to celebrate cul- ture at all -- just in case we ac- cidentally offend somebody. Ironically, I am offended that it is politically incorrect to say ‘Merry Christmas’ as that is the holiday I celebrate. Schools are also becoming increasingly involved in par- ticipating in charitable events both within their school and in their community. But why doesn’t the school system urge such generous behav- iour throughout the entire year? Indeed many schools do amazing work for local chari- ties, but it seems as though it is not encouraged to the same extreme as for Christ- mas charities. We are often persuaded to give families a Christmas, which in itself is great, but why can’t we give unfortunate families a mini- Christmas in June? After all, I’m sure the array of gifts we donate in December will not last an entire year. Christmas and the holidays have become overshadowed with busy shopping malls, flashy commercials for new expensive gadgets and exten- sive greed so much so that we have completely forgotten their true meaning. We have to understand that many fam- ilies may not receive a Christ- mas this year, and the only thing we have other than gifts are family and our morals. Spending time with loved ones and enjoying the plea- sure of their company, as well as understanding religious be- liefs that go hand in hand with Christmas, is really what the holidays are all about. I have noticed that along with my other bodily changes, my feet and legs are also affected. What other changes might I expect and how can I keep myself more comfortable? As you begin to gain weight due to pregnancy the added stresses placed on the foot are most no- ticeable as you approach your delivery date. An important hormone you are producing during the pregnancy is relaxin. This enables your ligaments to be more lax so that they can expand, not just around the stomach and pelvic area for the fetus, but also in the foot. The foot will lengthen and widen during the pregnancy allowing for a greater surface area to carry the additional weight. After delivering, in most cases, the foot will revert back to normal, although some of my patients complain that their foot has remained at least half to a full size larger. The best bit of advice I can give you is to wear good supportive shoes. These will support the arch, shock absorb during the latter months and accom- modate the swollen foot by loosening the laces. If you were used to wearing higher heeled shoes be- fore the pregnancy and now you are wearing fl ats, you may notice some calf muscle strain, either at its insertion behind the knee or at the achilles ten- don. Pressure of the fetus in the pelvic area where the veins lead back to the heart, may cause a back up of blood in these veins. This can lead to vari- cose veins and swelling of the foot and legs. It is most important to keep your legs elevated. If you were a pronator be- fore your pregnancy, the in- creased laxity and fl atter arch will lead to hyperpronation. I cannot over emphasize the im- portance of a good supportive shoe. The increased incidence of planter warts with pregnancy, especially in the fi rst three months is noted as well as an increase in foot perspiration and corresponding odour. I always try to encourage my patients to avoid foot problems before they manifest themselves, however, having sore feet is a small price to pay for the wondrous miracle of having a child. Especially when most of the foot and leg problems will revert back to normal within the month or two after delivery. The ques- tion is what kind of fat? There are two kinds, good fat and bad fat. Rec- ognizing the difference between the two will start you on your way to nutritional well-being. Bad fats can cause free radical damage that can lead to hardening of the arteries and it can also make fat metabolism sluggish (bad fats take a long time to breakdown). Every person’s metabolic rate is different. Genes, hormones, nutrition, exercise and state of health are what effects metabolic rate. Good fats directly infl uence hormones, nutrition and state of health. So for an improved metabolic rate, good fats infl uence three out of fi ve areas! So what are BAD FATS anyway? One source of bad fat is heated refi ned oil. Oil changes chemi- cally when heated at a high temperature. This chemically changed oil is referred to as transfat. Yet, with all that is known about fat metabolism, it remains unknown how transfat is eliminated from the body. Transfat metabolism is a big concern amongst Nutritional Consultants. One conclusion is that it is stored in the body in adipose tissue. This is believed to be the main cause for cellulite. Other bad fats of course include anything deep fried, margarine (because it has gone through an extreme heating process to become solid), tropical oils because of the high content of saturated fat and red meat and should be eaten in moderation (lean cuts only). GOOD FATS GOOD NEWS! Good fats are to be enjoyed regularly; a little goes a long way! EAT FAT to LOSE WEIGHT! They include, raw nuts (in the shell), seeds, avo- cados and unrefi ned oils. These oils include olive, fl ax and hemp oil. Quality oils are high in essen- tial fatty acids (EFA’s). EFA’s are named essen- tial because the body can’t manufacture them and therefore need to be supplied in the diet. Some dietary sources of EFA’s include Cold water fi sh (Atlantic Salmon) unbleached walnuts, other raw nuts & seeds (preferably in the shell) and avoca- dos. Butter and ghee are good in the sense that they are both natural products that haven’t been chemically changed and don’t turn into transfat, but should be used in extreme moderation because they are high in saturates. Lets compare for a moment us to the elite athlete. Dr. Michael Colgan, author of the book Optimum Sports Nutrition concludes this important mes- sage... “Fat consumption only adds dead weight to the athlete”, it is not a good fuel source, and Carbohydrate is the preferred energy source. It is also a well-known scientifi c fact that athletes have a much better capability to burn off fat than the average person. Therefore, if an elite athlete can’t benefi t from fat intake, how can the average per- son? The average person really overdoes it with fat, and fast food and restaurants have an abun- dance of fat in their food to account for good taste. Is essential for hormone production & function of the central nervous system. 8. Contains essential nutrients that the body can’t manufacture 8. Boosts the immune system 9. The food bank, which serves people in both Ajax and Pickering, is continuing to collect for its winter food drive. Hundreds of people -- many of them families with young children -- rely on the charity each month. In the fall the number reached 700 families. Rae Coulter, the execu- tive director, said the need is constantly increasing with more and more new faces walking through the door. Families are allowed to come once a month and are given a box of food, the contents of which varies de- pending on the size of the family. The Thanksgiving food drive was successful and items are still coming in steadily right now, but its during this time they need to stockpile food. “We rely on this food drive to see us through the year,” she said, adding the spring and summer are slow for donations and then things pick up again as part of the Thanksgiving food drive. Items needed include peanut butter, cereal, canned meat, canned fruit, juice and snacks for chil- dren. They are also look- ing for donations of baby food, formula, tea and cof- fee. If the need exceeds the amount of food collected and they run out of certain staple items during the year, the food bank is forced to use it’s limited resources to buy more. In Pickering, items can be dropped off at several grocery stores -- Sobeys, In- dependent, Price Chopper, Loblaws and Dominion -- as well as local fire halls. In Ajax, Sobeys and IGA have donations boxes. Food bank writes its holiday wish list and residents can help A/P PAGE 4 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, DECEMBER 18, 2005 durhamregion.com durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, DECEMBER 18, 2005 PAGE 5 A/P A/P PAGE 18 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, DECEMBER 18, 2005 durhamregion.com SPORTS sportsdurhamregion.com THIS WEEKEND Ajax Attack plays Huntsville Muskoka Otters in junior hockey action at the Ajax Community Centre today (Sunday) at 3 p.m NEWS ADVERTISER High School Hockey Classic The scores: Friday, Dec. 16: Final — Pickering High School Tr ojans 3 (Brendan Hann, Ryan Lane, Paul Kent, MVP Paul Kent) vs. R.S. Battle of hockey Trojans goes to Pickering High Ajax school edges McLaughlin in final of Pickering Panthers/ News Advertiser High School Hockey Classic By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — For a third time, the Pickering High Trojans marched into the final of the Pick- ering Panthers/News Advertiser High School Hockey Classic tour- nament. And, for a second consecutive year, the Ajax school skated off with the championship plaque. This time, the Trojans downed another team of Trojans, from R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate in Oshawa, 3-2 in the final of the third annual senior boys’ hockey tourney at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Friday afternoon. Pickering High, which went undefeated with a 4-0-1 mark at the tournament, held off a hard- charging McLaughlin team in the final minute. The Oshawans made it interesting after scoring with 1:10 remaining in the third period to get within a goal. McLaughlin pulled goaltender Mike Vrantsi- dis, but couldn’t get the equalizer past Alex Cyr. After struggling through much of the Durham Region senior hockey season to date, mostly due to injuries, Pickering High coach Te d Snetsinger says his club finally showed positive signs throughout the two-day tournament, which began Thursday morning. “They’ve played well at the tournament,” he noted. “We’ve outplayed a lot of teams this year, but we haven’t been able to bury them. We played well, moved the puck well and they weren’t (play- ing as) individuals.” Pickering’s other coach, Lou Manserra, noted staying out of the penalty box throughout the tournament also played a big role in helping the Trojans win their second Classic title in as many years. Meanwhile, the rigours of three overtime contests in the tourna- ment took their toll on a short- staffed McLaughlin squad, says coach Glenn Ross. “They seemed to have a little bit more jump in their skates than we did,” explained Ross. “We had too many overtime games, three in total in the tournament, so we didn’t have much jump. And, we didn’t have the bodies we nor- mally do.” Pickering High struck for the lone goal of the first period, just 30 seconds into the frame, with Brendan Hann scoring from the slot after a pass from the corner by Michael McFarlane. The Trojans had several good scoring chances in the remainder of the first peri- od and into the middle frame, but were stoned by Vrantsidis, who was McLaughlin’s most valuable player of the final. McLaughlin got on the board with 5:42 to play in the second, with Tyler Abraham depositing the puck behind Cyr. The backbreaker for McLaugh- lin came early in the third with Pickering High playing short- handed. Paul Kent, Pickering High’s game MVP, snapped a fat rebound behind Vrantsidis to give Pickering High a 3-1 lead. Ryan Lane gave Pickering a 2-1 lead early in the third. McLaughlin’s Andy Wregg- itt closed out the scoring with a marker with just more than a min- ute remaining in the third period. As well as playing in the final, Pickering High and McLaughlin opened the tournament Thurs- day, playing to a 2-2 draw. Picker- ing followed with three consecu- tive victories to finish at the top of the standings at the conclu- sion of the preliminary round on Friday. The Trojans defeated the J. Clarke Richardson Storm 3-2 in overtime, Courtice Secondary School Cougars 8-0 and the Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Cougars 3-2. McLaughlin also responded with three wins to book their tick- et to the final, defeating Courtice 3-2 in overtime, the West Hill Col- legiate Warriors 4-3 in OT and J. Clarke Richardson 3-1. All topped off with a thick slice of Yule-log cake, of course! This seasonal cake, sometimes sim- ply called a Christmas cake, is brushed with fruit jam, rolled and covered with chocolate icing, giving it the appea rance of a log. Have you every wondered about the origin of this traditional des- sert? Its origins, as it happens, traces all the way back to 12th- century Europe. In the days pre- ceding Christmas, it was custom- ary to search out a large log of fresh wood. On Christmas Eve, the hearth was sprinkled with salt, oil and cooking wine and the log was burned. The lighting of the log was accompanied by prayers, and the log was allowed to burn uninterrupted for 12 hours. In the Christian tradition, the ritual came to signify the fact that Jesus was born in a cold, bar- ren stable and had only the warm breath of a donkey and a cow for comfort. The ashes of the log were jealously guarded, as they were believed to offer protection against storms, the ability to heal wounds and the power to fertil- ize the earth. Although customs vary from country to country in Europe, the Yule-log is part of all of them. More recently, in 1879, a French pastry chef created the first Yule- log cake in honour of this cus- tom. In Canada, even if our des- sert tables are often overflowing with a variety of delicacies on Christmas Eve, the Yule-log cake is a perennial favourite, carrying with it the special pleasure of tradition. The tradition of the Yule-log cake has its roots in 12th-century Europe. I would truly like to thank you for your trust and confidence in us over the past 20 years.
